Yesterday’s brief News Ticker mention of baseball cap surgery procedures prompted an unexpectedly large reaction, so this seems like a good time to mention that a few months ago I started getting e-mails from a reader named David Goodfriend. He said he had a big baseball cap collection and that New Era was interested in acquiring it for a museum they were planning to set up. He asked me not to write about it until the matter was settled, and every now and then he’d send me an update.
The latest of those updates came a few weeks ago, when David said he’d decided to hold onto his collection and was now ready to talk with me. So I gave him a call.
Unfortunately, David doesn’t currently have access to photos of his collection (or to the collection itself, which is in storage). Still, our interview contains some fascinating info about New Era, and about the state of MLB merchandising 25 years ago. Dig:
Uni Watch: How old are you, where do you live, and what do you do?
David Goodfriend: I’m 56, and I live in Arlington, Virginia. I’m a researcher for the Associated Press and a musician.
UW: Were you a sports fan growing up?
DG: Always.
UW: Were you a collector?
DG: Well, baseball cards. But nothing else.
UW: So how’d you start collecting caps?
DG: Well, I grew up in New Jersey, but I’ve lived in the DC area since 1975, so we used to go to games in Baltimore. And one day I just happened to buy a St. Louis Cardinals hat at the game.
UW: And when was this?
DG: Around 1977. I really don’t know what made me do it — I just thought it was a nice hat. I started wearing it to softball games, got some compliments on it, and it got me thinking about baseball hats. I started noticing them more. One day in the winter of 1978, there was a brief blurb in the Washington Post about a baseball card convention that was going to take place at George Mason University. And at this convention, it said, would be a representative from New Era. And they’d be selling the caps to the public.
UW: And back then”¦
DG: Back then that was very rare. Merchandising wasn’t like it is now. So my friend and I went to this convention, and there was the New Era guy. I remember I bought a Minnesota Twins hat. My friend bought a Red Sox hat and a Cubs hat. Then, about a month later, my brother-in-law — who was working with my dad in New Jersey — called me up and said he’d noticed a store in Cliffside Park selling baseball hats. And I said, “No, nobody’s selling these.”
UW: It’s so funny to think about that now, because everyone sells authentic MLB caps. But back then they were hard to find.
DG: Exactly. So I went to this store, and it turned out to be Manny’s Baseball Land. It was a tiny little store, but they had all these hats — I was completely blown away. So my friend and I went up there from time to time, and we’d buy a few hats, and at one point Manny’s daughter, Lisa, said, “Listen, do you guys want to see our stockroom? You’re the only two people who buy these hats.”
UW: And you were just buying standard Major League Baseball caps?
DG: Yes. And that’s when I really started collecting them. And I should point out, I own nothing that’s game-worn. I have a few hats from the 1940s and ’50s, and a quite a few from the 1960s. But the unique thing about my collection is that from 1978 through 1982 or ’83, I have everything — any hat worn by any team during that period.
UW: So you’ve got the full set of all 28 teams for 1978, or however many teams there were that year.
DG: Yeah. And if they changed their hat design, I’d buy the new one.
UW: So you became a completist, for the then-current era.
DG: Yeah, for about four or five years.
UW: What happened after that?
DG: It just got to be enough — they were taking over my life. But I used to have them on my wall, all displayed. And it’s funny, guys would come over and just ignore them, but women loved them. They loved the colors, and the look of them.
UW: It was a chick magnet!
DG: It was my only hope, believe me. Anyway, it kinda looked nice. Now all the hats are stored away now at my mom’s place. They’re in boxes, in a climate-controlled room.
UW: How many of these are we talking about?
DG: Probably between 120 and 150.
UW: Did you actually wear all of these, or any of them?
DG: I hardly wore any of them. I usually wore a Mets hat, because they were my favorite team. And I couldn’t walk down the street without someone asking me where I’d gotten it, because you just didn’t see authentic hats in those days.
UW: What about that very first Cardinals cap — the one that got you started on all this?
DG: Unfortunately, that’s gone. I should have saved it, but it got worn out.
UW: Now what about your recent communications with New Era?
DG: I was on their web site last fall, and I saw that they had a notice on there, saying that they were trying to create a New Era museum, and they wanted donations.
UW: To help document their own history?
DG: Exactly. So I contacted them and said, “I have some things you may be interested in.” And they got back in touch and said, “We’d love to have you donate them.” And I responded, “Wait, I said nothing about donating them.” I said, “Your company has a terrible labor reputation” — and they do. And if you talk to any retailers, they’re a nightmare to deal with. I also said, “You asking me for this stuff tells me that you didn’t bother to save it,” and what does that say about them?
UW: Yeah. Y’know, it’d be one thing if they didn’t have caps from the very beginnings of the company. But I’m really surprised that they wouldn’t have stuff from the 1970s and ’80s.
DG: Yeah, that’s bad. Now, I have to say, the guy I was dealing with — his name was Jim Wannemaker — could not have been nicer.
UW: Even when you said they had a bad labor reputation?
DG: Yes, even then. He actually thanked me for that, and said, “It’s always good to know what people are saying about us.” He also said, “You’re right, we didn’t save anything.” He said they were a small company and it was all we could do just to get the orders filled for the Major League teams.
UW: That’s pretty short-sighted.
DG: I agree. And I said, “Look, I don’t want to donate these, but I’d consider exchanging them for a current set, or something like that.” And he said he was open to the deal, but of course he needed to see my hats first. And I said, “Okay, the next time I go visit my mom, I’ll take some photos.”
UW: So did you do that?
DG: No. The more I thought about it, I decided I didn’t want to part with the collection right now. So that’s what I told them, and again, they couldn’t have been nicer about it. They said I could stop by the plant any time I’m in Buffalo and they’d give me a tour. And what I’ve basically arranged is that if anything happens to me, the hats will end up with them.
UW: So do you have any old photos of the wall of caps, or of yourself wearing some of the caps?
DG: No, unfortunately. I may have some old photos packed away, but I don’t have access to them right now.
UW: Are caps today different from the ones you collected?
DG: The crown on the old hats was so high, it was ridiculous.
UW: Much higher than today?
DG: Yes, definitely. And the sweatband on the old hats was leather. Also, there were a few teams — the Red Sox and I think the Orioles — that didn’t wear New Era for a season or two. They wore Roman Pro. Are you familiar with that brand?
UW: No. I thought all MLB teams have worn New Era for, like, decades.
DG: Roman Pro was a company from Brockton, Massachusetts, and a few teams wore their hats. You could tell the difference — they were a little cut lower, like the old-time hats.
UW: Any other distinctive characteristics of the older New Era models?
DG: I think the wool was a bit softer then. Better wool, maybe. The brim was a little stiffer in the old days. And of course most of the teams had green under the brims back then. Otherwise they’re basically the same.
UW: Do they seem equally sturdy, the old ones and the new ones?
DG: Yes.
UW: Was the sizing more consistent back then?
DG: Yes. When I was buying hats at Manny’s, I always took a 7-1/8. Now, if I’m buying a hat, I say, “Give me three 7-1/4s and three 7-1/8s, and I try them all on, because I don’t know which one will fit.
UW: I notice you don’t use the word cap — you use hat.
DG: Yeah, I don’t know. It’s just the term I use.
UW: Did you used to play baseball when you were a kid?
DG: Yeah, in high school. And, ironically, I hated wearing baseball hats back then — I only wore them because you had to. I was more into — you’ll dig this — I was more into the stirrups. Back then the stirrup openings were very small, and they didn’t show a lot of white sock. So I would have my mom cut them sew some extra material into them, so they’d look like Mickey Mantle’s.
UW: Wow! I’ve read about people doing that, but you’re the first person I’ve ever encountered who actually did it.
DG: All my friends did it. We all did it.
UW: So everyone’s mom was sewing this extra fabric in there?
DG: Oh yeah.
UW: Anything else?
DG: Here’s a story: One time when our band was playing in Philadelphia in the early 1980s, I had some time to kill during the afternoon, so I walked around a bit. And I walked into this tiny little store. And they had some old Reds and Pirates vest jerseys. You never saw those back then. So I started talking to the guy, and he said, “Would you buy these?” And I said, “Well, I hate those teams, but if you did an old Mets jersey, I’d buy it in a second.” He went in the back and he had all kinds of old hats back there. And it turns out, this was Mitchell & Ness. And I’d been speaking to Ness.
UW: You were the focus group!
DG: I guess, yeah.

Those WVU uniforms are alright, they kinda look like the basketball uniforms that NIKE gave out to like.. every school though.
Did I just imagine it, or did I hear that the Miami Hurricane’s football program is getting new uniforms next year?

Paul,
the link to the home WVU unis is broken! You’re killing me here, i gotta see if they have an outline on the numbers!!!
Did I just imagine it, or did I hear that the Miami Hurricane’s football program is getting new uniforms next year?
If so, hopefully without that stupid stripe around the back (thought I’m not holding my breath).
I’m definitely in the minority here on this one, but I really like the current Miami unis. I like that stripe around the back and the symmetry of the similar stripe on the pants. However, I do wish that it was something that less teams used. I’m not a fan of the template system, and I think it would look better if it was more unique.
I think the previous unis with the stripes up the side and that curling stripe on the sleeve were a lot worse, so I don’t see the need for a Miami change. I just want to see them wear orange pants every time they wear the white or green jerseys. I’m a big fan of those orange pants on Miami.
the link to the home WVU unis is broken!
Fixed.
Love the #9 patch on the jerseys last night. The B’s also came out for warmups all wearing #9 jerseys, which is a bit played out at this point. But I think the Volvo SUV and Rolex they gave him makes up for it.
I guess link was sick of having the same uniforms as link.
Anyone else HATE when the numbers on a uni are tinkered with? IE: WVU and the slanted 00, or the Dolpins with the shadow? And NickNH – agree with the orange pants for the U, but they gotta get back to the Gino Torreta (sp)era design.
I really liked those number 9 patches the Bruins wore very classy, although I have to wonder in today’s overly sensitive PC world would Johnny Bucyk’s nickname “Chief” be allowed? I loved the shot of him in the head dress. Oh and great interview with this Dave fellow and his hats even if he does hate the Pirates, HA! Let’s Go Bucs! (Red vests and all)

there was nothing i wanted more on the new unis than different numbers. but whole italics look is just too hard to read and doesnt look good. oh well, at least we got rid of the cal look-a-likes.
and as far as the new unis go, i like them for now, but if this is the same templete that 10 other teams wear next year, they’re gonna look lame real quick

For me, I hate italic numbers, but I don’t mind most dropshadows/outlines, and love it when they pick a link or even link fonts, as long as it is legible.
Paul:
I am surprised that you never heard of Roman Pro. My first hats were actually from Roman Pro and David’s description was accurate. Unfortunately, when you wear them on a regular basis and sweat a little they fade quickly. I have since switched over to New Era (181 of 183) and the lack of quality control is also accurate but they are better than American Needle as far as the Cooperstown Collection which I collect.
So I was home sick yesterday and I just saw the article about the 5950 hat surgery….AWESOME!
That was the only way I could wear one because of my smaller dome.
Am I the only one who thinks the names on the WVU uni’s are waaaaaay too small?
And lastly, there are 5 people out of 120 at my work today, so I may be posting a lot today if I stay at work.
Check out link atrocities from the South Carolina Stingrays. Camo and Pink jerseys.
I remember seeing an episode of either Laverne and Shirley or Happy Days in which they went to a Milwaukee Braves game and wore Braves caps that didn’t look very professional. Was it even hard for Hollywood in the 1970s to get caps that looked authentic?

No.
I was going to post yesterday asking if Hurricanes goalie John Grahame seriously had a Nascar-themed mask, then I found link (scroll down to the second part). Some nice shots there of both his and Cam Ward’s masks.

“Chief” was Bucyk’s nickname, and he was proud of his heritage, so I wouldn’t see why it would be any less acceptable. He has worn the ceremonial headdress several times during Bruins’ events, and it is a point of pride with Bruins fans when people speak about it.
The only thing about the #9 patch that bothered me is that it looked like the link with the number on the front. However, a classy ceremony for one of the longest-serving men to a team in hockey history, and the Bruins played one of their best games this season. A good effort by a franchise who really needs to reclaim their winning tradition.

Do you mean the team in the episode had cheap replicas? Or were DeFazio and Feeney rockin trucker caps with Braves on them. If it’s the latter then that was pretty spot on. “Authtentic” stuff is realtively new for fans to wear. I love looking at the pre 60’s pics and seeing everyone wearing jackets and ties with fedoras. As opposed to today with more “artistic” interpretations of the home teams unis that you ever thought existed. Nothing is more lame though than wearing an authentic jersey that you had personalized with your name. I mean, do you think you might be mistaken for a former player with your 42 inch chest and 48 inch waist? Or maybe they might ask you to pinch hit for one of the Mets that tears a calf muscle? I also hate when someone wears a jersey of a team that’s not playing. Phew, I feel much better now.
Texas A&M wore a ribbon on their uniforms last night for their former coach Shelby Metcalf who died on 2/8.
Not the best picture of the ribbon, but it works: link
Yesterday’s STL Post Dispatch daily reported the Cardinals are currently sporting new batting practice caps. And they’re ‘odd’ looking. Anybody got a shot of these? I’m efforting myself.
As a WVU alum, I am once again disappointed in their uni choice. The old white jersey and blue jersey were just fine. I was even ok with the “special” white pants. This new one is just…..blech. The all blue was horrible and then when they tried to wear the old “special” white pants, they NEVER looked right. I am just disappointed…..

From what we’ve seen here, ALL of the BP caps are odd looking.

I was in Boston in 1988. I brought my New Era Red Sox cap with me. I noticed that the letter “B” on my cap was smaller and thicker. The “B” on the caps that everyone else in Boston wore were taller and skinnier. I quickly found out that the Red Sox didn’t wear New Era. Check it out. You’ll see the difference on any pic from that year.

Same here. I think Reggie Smith of the Dodgers was the template. Funny thing was, at the end of the season the socks had to be sewn back to how they were because we had to give them back.

Here is the new STL Cardinals BP hats. All MLB tems will use this template for the BP hats. I really do not like the splash of color on the side and the bills look somewhat rediculous with the center bead of color also.

Can someone tell me why the new trend in football unis is to have a V opening at the bottom of the unis?

There’s a decent chance they had to pay for the rights to use the real logos and such, and didn’t feel like doing that.
Those WV jerseys are awful. In every way. I’m generally pretty cool about change, but those are just ugly. Especially the alternative ones.

When I was in little league in the early 80s, you couldn’t find stirrups that someone’s mom hadn’t added fabric to previous seasons. Usually a little elastic on the bottom so they would stretch high almost to the knee.

Yeah, I watched it last night. I figured someone would comment on that. He said something to the effect of “We had 45 minutes to kill at halftime, and I didn’t know what to do, so I changed my entire uniform, and I had never done that in my life”.
When my brother and I were on the travelling all-star basbeball team for my town, we all thought this was the rage, so we all bought them. It was around 1988 or so.

It’s a hockey thing. Many players of American Indian descent are nicknamed Chief. I can remember the Flyers Bob Taylor (backup goalie in the 70’s) called Chief, especially in his days as color commentator with the Flyers, and now with the Lightning. Also, Craig Berube has had the name, and from time to time I’ve even heard Chris Simon referred to with that moniker.
Last night the Chicago Bulls wore red unis at home against Toronto. Bulls lost the game by 1 though in a thriller.

I liked the green Tampa Bay jerseys. They were definitely unique…no other MLB team uses green &white as a color scheme. The new “blue” is similar to the Seahawks blue and Philly Eagles green…where the color exists only in the uniforms, sort of like a trademarked color.
Paul I enjoyed the interview today. The Mitchell and Ness anecdote was great. Have you done a column on the pioneers of throwbacks? I tried a quick search but couldn’t find anything. If you have written on them before, can you point me in the right direction? Keep up the good work!

Yup. Had my mom sew strips of elastic in the bottom of my stirrups. Having any arch showing was dorky. link was my template.
I’ve done this Cap Surgery to a few hats that I own and I find that it gives the hat an odd shape when you are finished (along the seams). The best way to do this without having to cut the hat or remove anything is to soak it in very warm water for a couple minutes and wring it out a little bit. Then wear the hat for a good part of the day. It’s a tat uncomfortable when you first put it on but it will shrink down to fit your head perfectly and get rid of the tall crown. This works every time!

Nope. But I’ll put it on the list.
I was listening to the Heat/Trail Blazers game on the radio last night and the Blazer’s radio fellow mentioned silver being on their alternate red jerseys. I have watched them all of my life and never heard of silver being a Blazers colour, is this new?

Yeah I saw it, man, seriously, say what you want about Peyton Manning, but he’s got so much respect for Coach Dungy and more importantly the game, you can tell he is still a fan of the game that ‘drives him nuts’. Thumbs up to Peyton! (Us) Giants fans hope it will rub off on to Eli.
Dave also said that if he could turn into Peyton Manning he would tell everybody at CBS to kiss his ass. haha! hilarious. Peyton was looking spiffy too, he was dressed in a pinstripe suit, fitting, cause he was in Yankee land (sorry Mets fans). He spoke of when he was drafted to Indy that football was third behind Nascar and NCAA basketball, hard to imagine that now, they are # 1 in Indy now, and they should be too.
Did Hank Aaron change numbers during his time with the Braves? How did I not know this? Look at the two photos of him on this page. His Milwaukee number is in the 50s, but the Atlanta pic shows the #44 which I thought he always wore.

That’s correct, Bennett. I didn’t explain the heritage thing properly, so I’ll do it here. And yes, I made it sound as if he was of First Nation decent when you correctly pointed out that he’s Ukrainian-Canadian, born in Edmonton.
He was nicknamed “the Chief” after a Boston sports cartoonist mistook him for a native Canadian because of his dark features. Bucyk loved the nickname and it stuck. He embraced it so much that he took to wearing the ceremonial headdress. He even used First Nation imagery to describe himself: “I’ve thought of myself as a spear carrier, not a star, really,” he once said.
Bucyk lived up to his “Chief” nickname as captain of the Bruins when he led them to the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972.
Sorry for any confusion I may have presented earlier. I was writing quickly before I went into a meeting.

Wikipedia lists his MLB debut as April of 1954, so when did he wear the 50s number? He was signed by the Boston Braves in 52, but played 2 minor league seasons, and didn’t reach the big club until they had moved to Milwaukee. The batting helmet clearly has an “M” on it, so it couldn’t have been in Boston. Also, the Indian patch on the sleeve narrows down the timeframe from ’53 to ’56. The Braves changed patches in ’57.

link
Wikipedia lists his MLB debut as April of 1954, so when did he wear the 50s number? He was signed by the Boston Braves in 52, but played 2 minor league seasons, and didn’t reach the big club until they had moved to Milwaukee. The batting helmet clearly has an “M” on it, so it couldn’t have been in Boston. Also, the Indian patch on the sleeve narrows down the timeframe from ’53 to ’56. The Braves changed patches in ’57.

I know he wore #5 his first year with the big club. Maybe that #52 is from spring training.
Did David say anything about the cost of his collection?
The first authentic hat I ever had was a Cuns model from 1986 or so, and I think it cost about $15. Even in the mid-1990s you could get authentic caps for under $20, and yet now, despite the huge increase in sales, authentic caps often sell for as much as $27! Inflation has been bad but not that awful (yes, I know they’ve added three-dimensional embroidering, but that shouldn’t cost too much). What did the first caps sell for? Given the small maker, were they expensive?
Great interview. In the late 80’s I ordered throwback caps from Mannys, many were Roman Pro. In the mid-70s in Pony League and High School many of us cut the stirrups to add extra material. I think Frank Robinson was one of the pioneers in that area.
And I didn’t hear Manning say he changed his entire uni at halftime for LUCK. He said he had 45 minutes to kill, so he changed because he was wet. Then he said he was drenched again after 5 minutes out in the rain.
Paul, I know you’re not a Nike fan, but thanks for posting those new WVU jerseys! I am a big Nike fan and have been excited to see the new templates.
Last year’s were disappointing, I didn’t like how the funny sleeves crimped the jersey and link all funny. The only thing I don’t really like about this new one is the square edge on the insert in the shoulder. If they widen it, it would be a cool tapered effect, kinda like the Patriots (but better). It just looks like they were trying to make a point but couldn’t line it up. It’s kinda awkward in my eyes.
That was an extra interesting interview for me..
I grew up in Fort Lee NJ..which rival town is Cliffside Park..haha..
Go Bridgemen!
1) Roman Pro made all the original “Cooperstown Collection” caps when the throwbacks started in the late 80’s. They had leather headbands and shrank so much that they were unwearable after wearing them outside in the summer (I lived in Memphis when I had a couple so the humidity was a factor)
2) The Red Sox cap in the 80’s wasn’t made by Roman Pro. It was made by Sports Specialties (later bought by Nike). That company made a number of MLB caps (A’s, Red Sox, and Padres come to mind). Their wool was much thicker and the bills of their caps were much harder.
3) Before the current raised embroidery was present on ALL MLB caps, the Cardinals used it for quite some time. I’m not sure when they started, but the retail authentics that New Era sold didn’t have it…the STL logo was flat, however if you bought your authentic cap at Busch Stadium you could get one with the raised embroidery, which at the time was unique to the Cardinals caps.
Something completely unrelated to the current discussion:
Last night the Raptors played the Bulls at the United Center…Raptors wore WHITE, Bulls wore RED for Valentines Day.

Forgive me if this has been covered, but while playing college football in the late 80s I remember seeing jerseys with snaps or buttons that connected at the crotch level of the jersey to keep them tucked in. Unless memory fails me (too many shots to the head) Oklahoma State had them. Anyone remember if they had a name or know of this? And are they still used at all today?
I remember Roman Pro Caps when I was growing up in Indiana in the late 70s. But check this out, we used to buy ours at a Osco Drug store. They would carry the White Sox (my fav!), Reds, Cubs and a few random others. They wouldn’t have alot to choose from so you just bought the closest size they had and started sweatin’ in ’em.

Hi
When I first started buying the caps at manny’s they were 12-15 dollars.
At the time it seemed very expensive.
I have a question for some of you guys. Has there been an NHL team that has pulled off 4 colors nicely?
I was trying to think of some ideas for some youth hockey uniforms, but all 4 colors (red, white, blue, black) have to be on there somewhere. Just 3 would have been a lot easier.
I was an Islander fan as a kid and remember when Goring came over from the Kings….he ended up playing 82 games in an 80-game season because the Isles were two games behind.
Goring had two helmets, and whenever he got traded, he just painted them. I remember going to a game and his white helmet had som yellow on it, but it was actually the white paint chipping and showing the yellow paint from his King’s days. That photo you posted showed a different blue than his sweater, and that’s probably due to the fact that helmet was once purple.

Slightly random I know but one of my brothers is convinced this is the norm, while another thinks it is complete crap. Thanks
At the very bottom of this link it says that John Maine is having the Virginia state flag sewn onto his glove. We’ll have to keep an eye out for this as photos from Spring Training begin to surface.

red, white, blue, and black are difficult to pull off together, but the columbus blue jackets use all four of those colors in their link, and don’t do a horrible job. i was at their game this past sunday and got to see these jerseys in person (in the gift shop), i was surprised by how nice they looked (don’t crucify me gang). anywho, my valentine’s gift from the wife was a hat rocking link on a pinwheel white and navy hat
David, thanks for the info. I figured they would cost about that much.
And Yoke (#69), how about white jerseys and blue lettering with a red outline and black shadow? That would use all four and not look too busy.
The Rangers’ road alternates were like this; thanks to the shadows on the already-two-toned lettering, they used dark blue (shirts), red and white (numbers), and gray (number shadows).

Most likely it’s for the guys in the minor league camp. Minor leaguers are not allowed to wear single earflap helmets.

There was a stage when he was down to one and the equipment guys would tape it with blue or white shinpad tape, depending on the uniform. From the pic shown I’m betting that’s the situation at hand.
The closest I’ve come to that helmet is a blue Cooper link. I picked it up at a Halowe’en party. I traded the beer I was drinking for the helmet, which was covered in tinfoil as part of the wearer’s link costume.
I used to wear it to shinny and pond hockey a fair bit, but it never quite worked properly with my Bossy or Nystrom sweaters.

All-Star Weekend?
The National Hockey League is considering switching next year’s All-Star Game to the weekend from midweek. Last month’s game, held on a Wednesday in Dallas, received extremely low television ratings. The 2008 game is scheduled for Jan. 16, another Wednesday night, in Atlanta.
This season’s game was telecast on Versus and drew 691,000 viewers — down 74 percent from the 2.7 million who watched the game the last time it was played, in 2004. That game took place on a Sunday afternoon and was shown by ABC.
“We’re going to evaluate things that we can do differently and perhaps better in Atlanta,†Commissioner Gary Bettman said recently.
Yeah, like how about getting rid of your sorry commissioner ass…great work there Gary…how do you drop 74% in rating points…I bet the sponsors are real happy…
New Branding for a Shining New Era
Faced with a labor dispute that jeopardized the 2004-2005 season, the National Hockey League enlisted the help of SME to position the brand for the inevitable return to ice and beyond. The objectives of the assignment were to identify and articulate brand assets, positioning the league for new economic certainties and to guide the brand into a new era. SME’s Brand-ON!” process delivered a unique set of values – Honor, Courage and Sacrifice as well as an NHL Vision Statement. A major component of the branding process became a design evolution of the 75 year-old NHL shield.
Guess the new logo hasn’t helped, either? Dopes.

I’d bet the farm O’Neill’s 21 is the next Yankee number retired. No one has worn it since he left in 2001. The Yanks also went out of their way to make 22 available for Clemens by switching Cano to 24. Yes, 22 is the number Clemens wore with the Bombers, but he started with 21 with the Red Sox. The possibility that he could take 21 was never raised.

I guess in an attempt to compromise the otherwise pristine beauty of Wrigley Field, the Cubs have announced that they’re putting link on the outfield doors.

One of two things come to mind, even though no ads should be out there at beautiful Wrigley Field.
1) The Cubs are hurting for $$ after spending more in this offseason than ever. But they are owned by the Chicago Tribune so I doubt that theory.
2) Didn’t Jeff Samardja wear a UA pin when in his first Cubs press conference? I know there is a pic on some comments section along with Jamarcus Russel wearing the Nike pin while anouncing his eligibilty for the NFL Draft. Maybe there is some parallel between the pin and the wall.

Me and my father have a similar type of cap collection. We have 160 caps, mostly I’d say from a period around 1975 – 1995, but he has a few gems in there like a couple of St. Louis Browns hats, and a white A’s hat that started the collection (my dad has always told me it was some type of coaches only hat from a season, I could look into it) and my personal favourites, the two pillbox caps the Pirates wore back in ’77. There’s plenty of MLB caps and a lot of MiLB caps (we’ve focused on them lately due to the surge in availability of MLB caps) but also college hats as well. They’re all in perfect condition and in sizes 7 5/8 or 7 3/4, one of my dad’s stipulations is they all must fit him. His love of hats has given me an enlarged sensitivity to horridness of multi-coloured caps and all the other crap that has came out in the last 10 years. Also this has bread me a tendency to never where any cap other than a new era lol. I’m only 19 so when fitted caps became a popular style with the rise of Limp Bizkit (shudder) I engaged in plenty of fist fights with kids who called them “fullbacks”. Anyways, I ramble too much, if theres enough interest I’d be happy to take pictures of all of them and send them to the site to be posted. I know I enjoy bringing them out every 6 monthes just to bask in their glory.

I know that the Mets issued Roman Pro caps to their minor leaguers in the early 1980s and those at extended Spring Training and the Instructional league, as I worked for the Mets in Florida during that span.
