Just a Bunch of Nice Jewish Boys

maxierosenbloom_33.jpg

Thanks to everyone who came down to last night’s Uni Watch confab in Dallas. It was great meeting all of you. Photos of the Dallas and San Francsico gatherings to follow next week.

Meanwhile: I can clearly remember sitting on my parents’ living room sofa and watching the first light-heavyweight title bout between Mike Rossman and Victor Galindez in 1978. What really struck me was that Rossman had celebrated his Jewish heritage by wearing the Star of David on his trunks. It had never occurred to me before that Jews could be tough guys (obviously, I had a lot to learn about Meyer Lansky, to say nothing of Ariel Sharon), or that a tough guy would brag about being Jewish.

Those stereotypes, along with an interesting uni-related trend, come into sharper focus in the work of Charles Miller, a painter whose work is currently being displayed at Think Tank 3 in Manhattan. Miller specializes in portraits of Jewish boxers who fought between 1910 and 1940 — a period that featured 27 Jewish world champions in various weight classes. And apparently Mike Rossman was in good company, uni-wise, because a lot of these early Jewish fighters wore the Star of David on their trunks, including Ruby Goldstein, Al “Bummy” Davis, Jackie “Kid” Berg, Sid Terris, Benny “Baruch” May, “Slapsie” Maxie Rosenbloom, “Lefty” Lew Tendler, and Maxie Berger (plus Charlie Beecher wore Hebrew lettering). For all the Christian symbolism we see in sports, I can’t think of a boxer who’s worn the cross on his trunks, although there are several who’ve cited Biblical verses on their trunks or waistbands.

According to Miller’s excellent web site, he got the Jewish boxing bug from a book called When Boxing Was a Jewish Sport. I haven’t gotten around to ordering it yet, but it’s on my list.

As for Mike Rossman, dig this: His real name is actually Mike DiPiano. His father was Italian, and Rossman was his mother’s maiden name (a pizza bagel!), but he fought as Rossman and was known as the Jewish Bomber. The following video shows a round from his 1977 bout against Mike Quarry, with Rossman wearing the colors of the Israeli flag and the Irish-American Quarry wearing green. The announcers make specific mention of the heritage-based trunks. Check it out:

Uni Watch News Ticker: The NHL’s on-again/off-again plans to have teams wear white at home next season now appear to on again, at least according to this report (as spotted by Adam Koenigsberg). ”¦ Lengthy article here about Formula 1 paint jobs (with thanks to Kevin Burns). ”¦ Due to French regulations against gambling sponsorships, the European Unibet.com cycling team had to wear question mark jerseys at the Etoile de Bessèges. Full details here (with thanks to Mike Edgerley). ”¦ The Tigers are bringing an antique hat stretcher with them to spring training. Full details here (courtesy of Stuart Davidson). ”¦ Lots of uni-related stuff in the Phillies’ equipment truck too (as spotted by Bryan Redemske). ”¦ Those Pro Bowl uniforms look really, uh, sharp.

AND… the MLS Colorado Rapids are announcing later today that they are formally “partering” with Arsenal FC of the Premiership, and, as a result, changing their logo, colors and (possibly) name. Stories link and link.

Regarding the Pro Bowl photo of Bill Bellichick… don’t Reebok make Hawaiian-print hoodies?

Those AFC unis go really well with Carson Palmer’s helmet.

I recall that back in the 70’s, when the Pro Bowl was played in different NFL cities, the players wore NFC and AFC helmets instead of those from their own teams. I think it may be time to do that again.
What the? Is that a digitized camo print on Peyton’s link
I think it’s floral print, like what you see link.

Some may argue its validity as a “sport”, but professional wrestler Bill Goldberg at one point condidered wearing the Star of David on his trunks. This interview mentions it, but doesn’t go into much depth: link
What the? Is that a digitized camo print on Peyton’s link
It may be an attempt to make the shoes as unappealing as the jerseys. I mean, if you’re going to be ugly, you might as well be all ugly.

Manning should cover that light bulb helmet of his with floral print also.

According to link article, the Royals could break out the powder blues once or twice this year. Which would be freaking awesome.

Any idea what decal manning has on his helmet… it looks red and definatly not the ussual colts

Its worth noting that the boxing tradition of having the Star of David on one’s tights has also made an appearance in professional wrestling. The wrestler link drew upon that tradition for his ring attire toward the end of his career. You can just barely see it in the main picture at the site I just linked to, but you can find more pics at his link Though hardly the most famous Jewish wrestler, Horowitz became a bit of a cult favorite as one of the most well known “jobbers”, meaning someone who’s purpose was to lose to better known opponents. This was ocassionally used to good effect as if he ever won, it genuinely surprised pretty much everyone.

wouldn’t it be awesome if the rapids just completely rebranded themselves as Arsenal Colorado, and took Arsenal’s classic red jerseys?

I’m actually paying to MLS this year. And the AFL. Call me crazy.
Any idea what decal manning has on his helmet… it looks red and definatly not the ussual colts
Just looks like the back of his sneaker.

Pertaining to Jewish boxers that wore the Star of David on their shorts…
Didn’t you watch Cinderella Man? The biggest, baddest, toughest Jew of them all wore one…Max Baer.

I would guess he did something with making it as popular as it was. He was one bad dude!

A couple of things related to this mornings entry:

    1) I dated a Ruby Goldstein in college. She was somewhat better looking that link

    2) As one who wears a size 8 (or 7+7/8) hat that hat stretcher would have come in handy a few times.

    3) Bellichick looks a whole lot better in his floral shirt than he usually does.

Great find Dave! Thanks for that! If they do indeed become Arsenal Colorado I can now at least have an MLS team to be passionate about, C’MON YOU GUNNERS!

Anyone else surprised that the Phillies need to bring 1500 pairs of pants down to spring training? There are 61 players. If there are 9 coaches, each person would have 21 pairs of pants. I read about some other team, and I think each person had 4 pairs of pants. Also, 400 batting helmets? That’s 6 per player. Other teams barely have 2 per player.

Thanks BStu, No work is going to get done today because I will be surfing the “Obsessed with Wrestling” site ’til I get fired.

Jay beat me to the punch there. The minor-league complex is right next to Bright House. And the minor leaguers wear the same style BP spring training jerseys as do the big boys — I snagged a blue Phils jersey last year on sale at the Bright House gift shop.

In other MLS changes Real Salt Lake have gained approval from the Utah State Legislature for funding for their new link.

Hmmmm, if Colorado becomes Arsenal Colorado I guess that makes RSL the scum or sp*rs of MLS HA!

Thanks for the great post about Rossman. My Dad used to see him fight all the time. He even had a signed photo of him.
My father spared with Carmen Basillio and once at a club fight in North Bergen almost got into it with Chuck Wepner. The whole club gave my father a standing ovation for standing up to him.

Great memories.. There is a coffee shop in oradell nj called cool beans that has a gallery of Rossman photos in the mens room.

“The Tigers are bringing an antique hat stretcher with them to spring training”

I work in the visitor’s clubhouse for an MLB team and see the Tigers all the time. They have always brought that hat stretcher with them, every trip, it’s not just a spring training thing.

I recall in reading about Max Baer, that it was common for managers to encourage boxers with any Jewish connection to where the Star of David. It would help the boxers tap into a fanbase, especially in New York.

Year in and year out th pro bowl unis are always the most garish awful designs. It’s like some Frankenstein’s monster mix of bad uniform ideas.

LOL on the Reebok floral hoodie!

This post should include a “warning: severe camel-toe”

Also not impressed with the pro bowl unis. Looks like Reebok just painted the Vikings’ whites with some red and blue.

Interesting Pro Bowl cleat auctions currently on Ebay.

Three pairs from the 2005 game. Notice how the floral print is only on the bottom of the shoe. Nice shoe box also.

The Giants could use one of those…

Why did the Jewish boxers put their initials inside the Star of David? Was it simply style, or was there some religious significance to it?
Any idea what decal manning has on his helmet… it looks red and definatly not the ussual colts
the res is the top of the back of his shoe, you cant see the helmet logo at all. Look at his other shoe you see the red there too.
Why did the Jewish boxers put their initials inside the Star of David? Was it simply style, or was there some religious significance to it?
There’s no religious significance to it. It must have been the style they wanted.

I love it when UniWatch and Formula 1 intersect! Gosh, it’s like having two of my best internet buddies meet.

I look at F1 liveries this time of year with as much enthusiasm (and trepidation) as with any of the regular ball/puck sports’ uniforms.

    Cool.

hoping the new Gunners of Colorado switch to red kit rather than the Avalanche-inspired maroon and blue. seeing an Arsenal team in West Ham colors is too much for me to comprehend.

It almost appear in that last picture that Belichek is looking for some explanation for why his team is having to wear those abortions of uniforms. Carson Palmer’s helmet is going to look GREAT with those red-white-blue unis.

    Ugh…

Wait, you guys actually like this idea? I think taking the names of successful foreign clubs is the lamest, bush-leaguest thing MLS could do. Shouldn’t they be working on creating their own brands rather than saying, “Look at us! We’re just as cool as Real Madrid/Arsenal/Chivas Guadalajara! See? We have the same names!”

At least that’s what I thought until today. If it increases popularity, I’m all for it. But it still reminds me of Little League.

    Great topic today Paul!
It reminded me of the “light reading” in the movie Airplane…the Greatest Jewish Athletes pamphlet.
Being Jewish I always got a kick out of that.

About the hat stretcher…it may be obsolete now that New Era has replaced the wool caps with polyester (blah) that won’t shrink (or get into the proper shape to be worn)

Actually I do like the idea. The MLS already has some “traditional” soccer team names: DC United, FC Dallas, Chivas USA, Real Salt Lake, Houston Dynamo (from Moscow Dynamo)…

Here in B’more we’ve got a new 2nd-tier USL franchise called Crystal Palace FC USA; they’re actually part-owned by Crystal Palace FC of the Champions League. Same logo, unis, some player loans, etc.

I think it’s about time that the US soccer teams tried to tap into some of the “traditionalist” fan base that they KNOW are out there.

There doesn’t seem to be much middle ground on this: people either like the idea or hate it. Personally, I’m with Jeag on this. It reminds me of the kids whose parents would buy them the supermarket brand coke which was packaged to look like Coca-Cola or Dr Pepper, but it was in reality a cheap imitation.

MLS teams, in my opinion, shouldn’t try to represent something that they are not…none of them have the traditions and history that their European or Mexican namesakes too, and trying to graft a name onto the team to give it some legitimacy is not the way to go about this.

In actuality there is tradition in the great sport of football for clubs from one country taking names from more traditional clubs, there is a Liverpool Football Club and an Arsenal in Argentina, I believe.

I look at it like this; I have been an Arsenal supporter for many years. Being here in Pittsburgh there is no MLS team and the local Division 2 USL team is on hiatus so I need something to get my passions going for the domestic game. If Arsenal Colorado have entered into an agreement with Arsenal then I will support them as well, just the type of needed little push I need to get passionate for MLS, whose original club names sounded like they were made up by a group of 10 year olds overdosing on pop rocks.

Regarding the Star of David, I remember hearing that Dave Parker of the Pirates used to wear one on a chain. A reporter asked him why, and he said “because I’m a star, and my name’s David.” Don’t know whether that’s true or not.

I almost don’t mind the probowl unis…I mean..they aren’t as bad as some of the ones..okay all of the ones..in the past few years..

But they should go with different helmets..ones to match..not that it matters seeing how no one watches the probowl..

If the All-Star jerseys weren’t so ugly anymore..I’d say play the real game in em too..but..In baseball it doesn’t really matter if your team looks different..

Odd request: I’m trying to find a picture of the Indiana basketball warmup pants, and I’m having trouble finding one. I thought you all might be able to help. So … help?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to honor a player by naming him an ‘All Pro’ and giving him a free trip somewhere without having to go out and risk injury (or play half-ass) in a meaningless game? You could even give the players a commemorative fugly jersey.

The fact that its the only All Star game to take place after the championship is decided makes it even more worthless. I can’t remember the last time I watched even 5 minutes of the Pro Bowl.

And that’s a perfectly valid point, but it just smacks of cheap imitation to me. I can understand how some fans get into the European style names, unless your one of the many hispanic fans that took umbrage with the Houston Dynamo’s original name of Houston 1836.

I would rather a team dazzle me on the field rather than try to bring me in with their fancy European sounding name. I’m a Liverpool fan, but if some team here on this side of the pond tried to appropriate the name Liverpool or call themselves ‘The Reds’ (the blood red color is associated closely with the City of Liverpool) or tried to use the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, I would be horrified. Tradition cannot be artificially constructed in such a way, it has to evolve over time in most cases.

I had plans at 7 last night that I couldn’t break and I didn’t get finished with them until after 10. At that point my 23 years were starting to wear on me and I had to call it a night (and I was still late to work this morning…go figure).

Yes, that’s the Steelers’ version of the NFL hoodie. Bill gets his personalized, as do most of the Pats, with his initials in the middle under the logo. He then cuts the sleeves, or has someone do it for him.

I wonder how I will look in one of them claret and sky blue shirts of the Rapids, stunning I should think. ;)

Actually, the new logo is excellent. Does anyone have a picture of the intended Arsenal Colorado logo?

    Also, here’s my 2 cents:
I think I like the name sharing/partnerships because they represent something more than just a name copy. They are a partnership, and as long as there is a relationship between the two, I think it’s pretty cool. Now, there is a connection between the two and more European fans will at least check in to see what’s up with them, like I do with my MLB team’s minor league teams.
Regarding the Star of David, I remember hearing that Dave Parker of the Pirates used to wear one on a chain. A reporter asked him why, and he said “because I’m a star, and my name’s David.” Don’t know whether that’s true or not.
I remember reading that quote from Dave Parker back when I was a little kid. It seems like it was in “Sport” or “Baseball Magazine” (great mag for photos; too bad it was shortlived).

Being an ignorant lad in a small Midwestern town, I did not know what a Star of David was or the significance of it, and had to ask my mom about it.

I had plans at 7 last night that I couldn’t break and I didn’t get finished with them until after 10. At that point my 23 years were starting to wear on me and I had to call it a night (and I was still late to work this morning…go figure).

I’m sorry I missed out on it, was the turnout good? Since it was cold last night, I figured Gingerman would be packed because people always head indoors from the beer garden when it dips into the 40s.
It did turn out well, there were about 8 people representing DFW. And if my 24 years can drive from Fort Worth to Dallas, drink beer, talk unis, and head back all before midnight, well I guess that just goes to show you another way TCU trumps SMU… :)

You’re right, I am making excuses. Consider this a mea culpa.

Keep talking crap about SMU, my alma mater beat your alma mater though 21-10 the week after you beat Oklahoma in 2005. And since your Frogs and my Mustangs didn’t meet this past year, but will in the 2007, I’ll be milking that win for all it’s worth between now and then. I think the game is in Ft. Worth next season, maybe we’ll run into each other this fall. I know I’ll be there.

Cool article here from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about a guy in Milwaukee who fixes sports uniforms and equipment.

It was cool to see the Formula 1 article linked on there. It’s the one place in auto racing where the teams still have at least some control over the look of their car (see: NASCAR). Nothing to me quite beats the experiencing of watching one of those pretty red Ferraris screaming down the main straight at Indianapolis.

Also glad to see love for the IU stripes on the comment board. At least I hope your mission to find those pants was out of love…

    “beats the experience”

didn’t take my afternoon nap. didn’t drink enough caffienated goop this morning.

also, i thought the team’s conference that wins the super bowl gets to don the home uniforms while the losing team’s conference wore the white road uniforms….. any clarity as to why the AFC (who won the super bowl) is sporting white unis?

and they do look like something ripped out of minnesota’s or arizona’s uniform get up. ugh.

Well they were released before the Super Bowl, so they probably go along with whoever is the home and away team for said Super Bowl

Stupid Colts…not that I’m bitter about SB XLI or anything

In 1990-1991 season the Detroit Pistons wore
a black sleeve band. The NBA isn’t very clear on the history regarding
this band or others I have tried to research. I was wondering if you
had any clue as to why the Pistons wore this band?

I know I’ve seen a few Oriole fans around here so… Roch Kubatko’s Baltimore Sun link has a tidbit about word from Mike Flanagan that they are discussing bringing back the “Baltimore” to the road unis. Might seem pretty inconsequential to many but its a sore spot to a lot of Baltimore folks. As a long time O’s fan I’d love to see link return.

Actually, though I’m a Michigan guy, I do love the IU stripes. I’m a football fan, and I’m cynical about Michigan basketball (woohoo, maybe we’ll make the NIT again this year), so I have no real beef with Indiana.

Although I did actually seek them in connection with Michigan football — I was writing about a recruit who decommitted to switch to IU, and I found a way to bring the awesome stripes into it. And he ended up at Florida anyway.

    link

And Dave Parker wore a Star of David necklace all through his prime.

Because, “My name is David, and I’m a star.”
Any idea what decal manning has on his helmet… it looks red and definatly not the ussual colts
Isnt that the sticker from the SB?

Probably a coincidence, and an irrelevant one at that, but the Rapids new stadium in Commerce City, CO is about 5 minutes from the old Rocky Mountain Arsenal site.

James Toney’s not Jewish, he wore the Star of David to honor Jackie Kallen. Zab Judah is another black boxer that wears the Star of David on his trunks. I believe he actually IS Jewish though.

Speaking of hats… Any opinions on the new sweat-wicking New Era 5950’s? I know we’ve talked about it here in the past, but they’re about to make their debut, signaling the end of the wool-cap era. Thoughts?

No coincidence. This has been stated as a reason behind the potential name change.

And, for the record, there are a number of teams named Arsenal throughout the world:
    link., from London.
link, a women’s football club affiliated with the above.
FC Arsenal Kyiv, from Kiev, Ukraine.
Arsenal de Sarandí, from Avellaneda, Argentina.
    Berekum Arsenal, from Berekum, Ghana.
    C.D. Arsenal, from Roatan, Honduras.
    Arsenal Tula, from Tula, Russia.
    Arsenal Wanderers, from Mauritius.
