Happy Super Bowl Sunday!
Let me start out the day by saying,
Bear Down Chicago Bears! Beat the ponies.

Wow, you’re from Indy? Chicago transplant, apparently.

Personally, I was leaning towards the Colts, but after seeing Peyton Manning get knocked down by an eighth-grade girl in that tango video yesterday, I think the Bears will do OK.

I’m starting here, starting now, on my quest to have “Alternate” uniforms (hats, jerseys, etc) be called “Alternative” instead.

Unless they use the regular ones one game and the new ones the next game and switch back and forth, they ain’t alternate. They are alternatives.

Those BC uni’s look pretty nice…thats a better looking gold then I’m used to..maybe the shine on them is toned down a bit?

Might just be the lighting in the photo, but the gold just doesn’t seem as shimmery as the gold used by Georgia Tech or Vanderbilt in their respective gold basketball uniforms.

The BC gold is still Vegas gold — a seriously lame, uninspired color. Part of the current swing away from bold colors and toward fashion-rack tints. Sad.

Lose Remerswaal’s right — it should be “Alternative.” It should also, in this case, not be Vegas gold…

The Super Bowl will end about 10 p.m. Sunday, and by 10:01 every player on the winning team — along with coaches, executives, family members and ball boys — could be outfitted in colorful T-shirts and caps proclaiming them champions.

The other set of championship gear — the 288 T-shirts and caps made for the team that did not win — will be hidden behind a locked door at Dolphin Stadium. By order of the National Football League, those items are never to appear on television or on eBay. They are never even to be seen on American soil.

They will be shipped Monday morning to a warehouse in Sewickley, Pa., near Pittsburgh, where they will become property of World Vision, a relief organization that will package the clothing in wooden boxes and send it to a developing nation, usually in Africa.

I found the new batting practice hats at the mall last night. Besides the obvious changes to the design, the hat is “boxier.” The front is far more structured than the last version and the logos are bigger. The stretch panel on the side is much thinner than the rest of the hat and when paired with the piping gives a somewhat prominent “mushroom” effect to the side of your head.

I’ve always thought BC had nice, classy uniforms in every sport(well at least the sports I watch-football, basketball, baseball). Garnett and gold is a good combination-I think BC wears it better than Fla State.

On a side note, How bout link baseball beating # 7 Arkansas 9-2!! On to Omaha!

It’s been said before, but somewhere in deepest darkest Africa someone thinks the Buffalo Bills are the best team ever.

A very uni-centric article of a local link from Beth Chana Academy, aptly named the BCA Skirts. Oy, gevault!

And I agree that using the phrase alternate uniforms is wrong, and alternative is a better choice of words.

Sorry, I did something wrong on that last one…What I meant to say is that “alternate” has many definitions. One of them is “constituting an alternative”. Since the uni’s we know as “alternates” do constitute an alternative to the regular ones, “alternate is used correctly here.

BC looked a lot better when they used yellow gold instead of this newfangled “Vegas” gold.

BC High still uses burgandy and yellow. they look much better than the big college.

Alternate also means serving as a backup when used as an adjective, in which case, it would be correct (She chose the alternate route home instead of her usual one). Some dictionaries list alternate as interchangeable with alternative, which would also make it correct.

    Either/or, I’d say.

The tame gold unis of BC just don’t look right with the deep maroon trim. Too blah.

Damn, Graham. Beat me to it (even with the weird, alien post).

I agree with Tape. Maroon and yellow looks better than maroon and gold. The ‘Golden’ Gophers use yellow and call it gold. Works for me.

I didn’t know BC wore gold unis until I saw that picture this morning. I couldn’t tell they were a different color just by watching the hightlights. I’m a fan of the “Vegas Gold” and the “soft” nature of that color, but I do agree that it’s overused. Also, I can’t think of any instances where it was used on a really good uniform.

Now, “Old Gold” is a totally different story…beautiful color on a bunch of beautiful different uniforms.

I found the new batting practice hats at the mall last night. actually, the designs for all 30 teams are now on neweracap.com.

Since Super Bowl Sunday makes for a very boring afternoon of sports TV, I am watching Tottenham-Man U. on Fox Soccer Channel.

I have just seen something I’ve never seen before. Man U’s goalie, Edwin Van Der Sar was removed from the match very late due to a broken nose. Since all the subs were in, a player already on the field had to become the goalkeeper. So John O’Shea was given a blank green goalkeeper’s jersey and some gloves.

Is this common for players to wear blank jerseys in the games?

That’s not 100% right. I was watching a little of the coverage yesterday on ESPN. they had Ditka and I think Jaws, I forget which of the guys it was, maybe mort. But any way, the white guy, not ditka, said he had a friend get him a copy of the hat from the winning team’s lockerroom, and he put on one of the colt’s hats. then Ditka put one on too, a bears one. so they have been seen on american soil. oh, we have seen the stuff on here too, linked out to websites so we all know what each one will look like. and we know abou the passing it on to africa, like the joke abouve about the bills. damn urban myths

I just went to the New Era site. I truly believe that New Era is contributing to the downfall of society. It’s hard for me to really decipher between fans and people who think it’s actually cool to wear a red yankees hat, or a green red sox hat. Why would someone actually use their hard earned money on a piece of garbage like these hats?

I am pissed the Brewers got rid of the Wisconsin State backdrop for their BP hats. I think the State outline with the “M” in the middle is so classy. The Astros have their state in the BP hats… why can’t the Crew? Oh well…

The only instances I can think of are when the situation you described happens, or when a player has to switch jerseys because of the presence of blood.

The Super Bowl championship apparel for both teams definitely sees the light of day, at least before hand. There is a video on CNN.com of an Orangutan “predicting” the winner by selecting a T-Shirt (they appear to be the official championship ones).

And of course stuff leaks out into the western world. I just regret not buying a 1991 Atlanta Braves World Series Champs pennant when I had the chance….

I always wanted a Boston Red Sox 1986 World Champions t-shirt. Guess they’ve been destroyed though. Love the idea of the Bills dynasty that never happened.

    Hi
I personally like this color combination _ see Cleveland Cavs. The “lame” looks here to me is due to the “no-hole” dull mesh every brand uses now. Dull fabric with shiny trimming and lettering usually have a good effect on most colors, but with this particular gold they should have gone with the “mettalic” fabric NBA teams (DEN, HOU, even WAS vegas alternate) wear now. While being as comfortable, it still has the shiny look of the dazzle fabric. The Cavs uniorm is made of classic maroon mesh with vegas dazzle, wich makes the gold look brighter so it works great. Even if BC(maroon) is one of my favorite unis, it’s true that the dull fabric makes it look rather beige than gold.

Several years ago, I purchased a Washington Capitals 1998 Stanley Cup champs shirt on Ebay. Of course, the Caps lost that series 4-0 to the Wings.

I was just looking at the BP caps on link and noticed that the Angels cap doesn’t actually have the mushroom thing on the side. No other one is lacking that. Even the other ones that don’t use a contrasting color (Boston) still have the mushroom.

I’m neutral on Boston College’s Vegas gold, but I dislike the font for its wordmark. I don’t mind special fonts on uniforms, but slanted lettering just looks bush league to me.
I was just looking at the BP caps on link and noticed that the Angels cap doesn’t actually have the mushroom thing on the side. No other one is lacking that. Even the other ones that don’t use a contrasting color (Boston) still have the mushroom.
It’s the wring pick. Go to Amazon.com and search “Angels 2007 Batting Practice”, it has the flap.

When I worked for MLB Productions in 1986, I got my hands on a Red Sox World Champions hat. I wore it for at least a year. One day I was crossing 57th and 5th and a gust of wind took the hat and flung it toward Madison Ave. I tried to go after it, but it was gone. Sad moment.

Throughout the 90’s, I did those championship commercials for Sports Illustrated. We used to make up hats, shirts and sweatshirts, for both sides. I had a bunch of garments from “championship” teams that lost the game. Used to wear them all the time just to see if anyone would notice. Most of the time no one did.

Point is, despite what the Times article said, believe me there are plenty of people walking around with that stuff…right here in the States.
In fact, I just might break out my Titans Super Bowl XXXIV championship sweatshirt today.

Gold uniforms are a bad thing.

    Wizards alts.(Scary)
    Kings alts.(Horrific)
BC Eagles alts.(Kitty pissed on the laundry)

Gold is a great trim and embroidery color but in large doses…it’s pretty awful

Those gold alts look so bright, it might be difficult to distinguish between them and white unis on a bad TV or in bad light. Was the other team in color?

I wonder how much New Era product is returned and destroyed each year because it just sits on shelves, unsold.

Penn State’s women’s basketball team is wearing pink jerseys today to raise awareness for breast cancer research. As far as a pink jersey goes, they don’t look too bad, but it’s still a garish sight for anyone that loves PSU’s classic look (in almost every sport, not just football).

I must say that Tony Dungy’s polo shirt is ugly as hell, and I can only imagine that Lovie’s will be just as ugly. Dungy’s shirt has a similar template to the Reebok jackets, including the crazy, curved, color-contrasting (alliteration much?) back panel. Also, the teal on the SBXLI patch clashes badly with the Colts’ royal blue.

Last year when I traveled with the Indiana University basketball team to the NCAA’s in Salt Lake City (I’m in the band…they crammed us all on the same plane), they had all purchased red Yankees hats, supposedly as a sign of unity or something. Needless to say, it was one of the tackiest things I had ever seen.

I bet our beloved blogger Paul Lukas isn’t too thrilled with all of the black in the Mets BP cap. The “G” on the Giants cap is also nearly impossible to read! Black G with an orange outline on a black hat? Ridiculous.

Oh, and despite the Bills losing four straight Super Bowls, I’m still proud to wear Bills gear wherever I go.

I am pissed the Brewers got rid of the Wisconsin State backdrop for their BP hats. I think the State outline with the “M” in the middle is so classy. The Astros have their state in the BP hats… why can’t the Crew? Oh well…
I love that Brewers hat. I’m glad I got one last time I went to Milwaukee, because there’s no way I would get the new one. By the way, Brewers fans should be embaressed. I thought there would be a nice amount of Cubs fans that came up there, but we were the majority at Miller Park. It was mostly Cub’s blue.

Actually, from what I’ve seen the only “fake champion” gear that get’s sent to child soldiers tends to be the reebok stuff that is league sponsered. I was at the Sugar Bowl a couple of years ago, and the guys outside that had shirts made up by the time the game was over said that all shirts showing the wrong team winning went to charity, (but they were still available then for $5.00). Because these items are a novalty at best they can only really be sold at really low prices (like $5.00), but if it goes to charity they can get almost as much as they charge fans for them (around 20 bucks).

I’m a Royals fan, and in my basement I have identical pennants for the 1985 World Series. One proclaims the Cardinals as champions and one has the Royals as champions.

I bought the Cards pennant off eBay a few years ago. It may be a replica, but it looks exactly like the official Royals one.

In all seriousness (to pinch from Bobby Bittman),

Do you mean LAME or la-MAY?

I do believe the Brewers set the record for 2nd largest attendence for the year last year… so that is nothing to be shameful about. I’ll give it to the Cubs, they do travel well as fans, but it isn’t impressive when there are a lot at Miller Park. It’s an hour drive, and since they can’t get seats at Wrigley, it’s a close second. I love being a Brewers fan. The fan base is growing every year, and in a few years the Crew should be contending for a title. (in my opinion)

You can occasionally see the “Wrong” championship here in the US. Many, many years ago, I got a Lakers 1991 NBA Champs shirt. Unfortunately, the shirt has long since gone.

Rain’s really coming down now. Natural grass field and classic uniforms to boot. This old school football with modern cameras. Beautiful!

The NFL referees should have a talk with the people that created the new NHL jerseys so that they could get something that repels water as opposed to what they have tonight (nipple-huggers).

I don’t have a screenshot of the jersey, but the R on the back of the NFL referee jersey looks really similar to the link.

Unfortunately, Paul, the only reason your uni-based prediction broke down was that Hester, Muhammed, et al. wore those insanely ugly Orange shoes.

tessa, you still with us, girl? Take a few days to sulk, then come back to posting. I might not want those rosaries after all.

Loved the Chicago socks and the Colts’ all-white look. Really dug the rain playing a major factor in the game.

Prince looked like crap in Miami teal and tangerine, but he did a great job (hometown boy done good) despite his hip replacement.

One last question: Where the hell was Ed Hochuli this postseason? Other than the pythons gone missing, it was an aesthetically-pleasing game, even if the play was ugly.

    Next up, spring training.

Loved the unis, loved the rain; old-school NFL football. Speaking of which, something occurred to me during the game:

This was only the second Super Bowl played between teams which both existed prior to 1960. The only other one was Steelers vs. Rams in Super Bowl XIV.

The only way this can happen is if the Colts, Steelers or Browns represent the AFC (all three joined the AFC from the NFL after the merger). The Browns have never been to the Super Bowl*; the Steelers played the Cowboys (1960), Vikings (1961) and Seahawks (1976) in addition to the Rams; the Colts previously played the Jets (1960) and Cowboys (1960).

    * – The original Browns franchise, as the Baltimore Ravens, played the Giants in SB XXXV, but as NFL history and statistical records treat the Ravens as an expansion team, with the 1999+ Browns as a continuation of the original Browns, plus the fact that the Browns had been reinstated by then, that game doesn’t count.

Is it just me, or was this the first Super Bowl where the team’s logos were not on the field, aside from the endzones?

I agree with Minna. Bring back the Pythons! :)

When I bought my Cardinals WS Champs shirt the Monday after they won, one of the stores I was in had “Tigers WS Champs” shirts on clearance for like $2. New store manager forgot to cancel the order. Shouldn’t that be somewhere near the top of the check list?? Luckily they only ordered 20 shirts of each team to see how well they would sell in this area.

BTW, this is my third attempt at writing this. I’m really not liking the security code.

No, the prediction broke down because Rex Grossman woke up this morning and said, “I’m starting in the Super Bowl”.

One stat reflected the fact that the Bears were tied with the Raiders for the most 4+ turnover gmaes this season. When you’re tied with the Raiders, you DESERVE to lose.

Allison, I can’t understand no Hochuli for the entire postseason. Do pythons hibernate in winter? Did he have a big case he just couldn’t postpone? What? I demand answers!

At least referees didn’t determine the outcome of this Super Bowl, and I am hoping they return to their former unis next season.

In questions is Thomas Jones’ sock on his right leg. Early in the game, he had one stripe (normal), sometime around the 2nd quarter he has two sets of stripes on one leg, but one set on the other leg. Not sure what was going on.

I’m lovin the Wizard’s alts. I like the different colored jersey and short.

schuby – To your credit…you are the only one on the entire friggin’ planet that likes the Wiz alts. cause those bad boys are hideous nomo…

Yeah, but no Prince in purple, much to my regret. He looks better in purple than he does in tangerine and teal.

Hey to Prince’s credit he made his millions off his Purple Rain movie and song…but what the f is the promo slut jerkoff Ditka doing wearing a purple suit on the CBS pre-game show? Blabber mouth jerk is an insult to the people of Chicago. Hey Ditka retire already, you’re like so…1985.

I agree with all who dislike “Vegas Gold”.
    Dittoe, Dittoe Dittoe !!!

The Saints for years had great uniforms using traditionl, darker Old Gold. Then around the time Lou Holtz went to Notre Dame, it seems that almost every Old Gold team in pros and college switched to Vegas Gold – the color of weakened cat p.ss !

The color does not contrast well with White and is even more horrible for Dome teams like the Saints – and the weakeness and patheticness of that crummy, trendy, sellout, lameass color is what has probably given the Saints the even more pitiful excuse for the even more pathetic “Black on Black” and White on Black” leotard bottom uni monstrosities that we have been treated to in recent years.

You can look at older photos of Black and Old Gold teams, with Army keeping Old Gold as recently as two years ago, and see much better unis then you see today. The UNI GODS probably weep at this p.ss poor excuse for sensible uni attire !!! (By the way, Army taking on Vegas Gold as a uni team color is a true sign that the Apocalypse currently upon us).

Man Law Number 1. – Burn all “Vegas Gold” uniforms and replace the color with Old Gold.

As for Black leotards uni bottoms, donate them to the Seventh Grade JV teams where they belong – their very existence are too lame to even merit a Man Law.

This is also done to t-shirts and hats that are counterfeits sold at sporting events and concerts. (Unless the material is flammable, then it will be burnt in a controlled fire.)

I think if they wanted to, the Bears could pull off a black jersey. The blue’s looked pretty good being all soaking wet.

With the Colts’ victory, the record now stands at 11-8 for quarterbacks with double digit numbers against quarterbacks with single digit numbers. (For full disclosure, there have been three Super Bowls between starting quarterbacks who both wore single digits, and 19 Super Bowls between starting quarterbacks who both wore double digits.)

As another side note, for what it’s worth…

The AFC is 15-7 against the NFC in games where both QBs wore single digits or both wore double digits. The NFC is 14-5 against the AFC in games where one QB wore a single digit and the other wore double digits.

Weren’t starting QBs wearing #8 undefeated in the Super Bowl once (Aikman, Young, Dilfer) now they’ve lost the last two.

It’s been said before, but somewhere in deepest darkest Africa someone thinks the Buffalo Bills are the best team ever.
and they’d be correct in thinking so =)
