One winter all-star game down, two to go. The NBA All-Star Game package was unveiled yesterday, and the big news is that the league has finally succumbed to logo creep. The Adidas logo has been stamped on the shorts, marking the first time that a manufacturer’s logo has appeared on an NBA game uni. A league spokesperson assured me yesterday that there are no plans for the logo to appear on regular season uniforms, but this isn’t a good sign, especially since Adidas also put their ubiquitous triple-stripe design on the sides of the All-Star Game shorts and jerseys, plus they’ve got their logo on the headbands and wristbands, effectively making this the Adidas All-Star Game.
Such branding shenanigans notwithstanding, I think the uniforms look pretty good, especially by past All-Star Game standards. This year’s game is being played in Las Vegas, so there was major potential for excess, but they went with a cool retro logo for the game and relatively restrained designs for the jerseys — I like. Even that fliterring-diamond stardust pattern on the side panels works surprisingly well. The only downer is the rear view — I’m not a fan of the two-tone effect, or of players wearing anything on their ass, and putting player names below the uni numbers has “because we can” written all over it — but it’s not a crippling blow.
The warm-up jackets look pretty solid, too. Much like last year, they’re using sleeve patches to chart each player’s past All-Star Game appearances, this time with a Vegas-inspired playing card motif (here’s the East version) — not bad.
Raffle Winner: I’m happy to announce that Matt Fitzpatrick of Brookline, Mass., is our raffle winner for the NHL All-Star jersey. Major thanks to all who entered, and for all the kind words about the site that many of you sent along. More raffles to come in the weeks and months ahead.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Richard Grossman says he was “almost blinded” by Josh Smith’s gold sneakers when he attended Wednesday night’s Celtics/Hawks game. “The entire game, instead of getting mad at the Celtics for blowing a lead, my only other thoughts were on those shoes,” he writes. “Thanks for getting me thinking more aesthetically at a sports event.” … Amusing logo creep cartoon here (with thanks to Gordie Fall). … Fantastic article here about the guy who paints Michigan’s helmets (with extra-special thanks to Chad Klenk, who had to grit his teeth to send an article about his beloved OSU’s arch rivals). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Andy Roddick began his Australian Open semifinal match against Roger Federer wearing a white shirt, but then he changed into a black shirt midway through the third set (not that it helped any). … Food for thought from Phil Morris, who writes: “You know darn well that the NHL will have the Sabres wear Stanley Cup patches on their jerseys if they make it to the finals. Where will the captains and alternate capt’s wear these patches? Both the right and left upper chest areas are occupied on the current jerseys, and the shoulders have the ‘pierced B’ logo.” … Logo Creep Alert from Zach Hilpert, who came across this notebook at the William & Mary bookstore. “These notebooks are not performance-enhanced,” he writes. “They hold the same amount of sheets as the generic versions, and ‘college ruled’ means the same no matter which you tablet you purchase. The big difference is, for the privilege of shilling for Nike, you get to pay almost twice as much as for, say, the standard Mead/Five Star brand.” … Another table tennis player with atypical attire: Biba Golic (as spotted by Peter Rayno).
Looking at the new NBA All-Star uniform photos, there needs to be a new head of Quality Control for the NBA. In link photo, LeBron’s left sleeve only has a heart and spade. In link photo, Shaq has all 4 suits on his sleeve.
In link photo, link photo, and link photo, the shorts have the conference logo on the waist line. link photo of Kobe is missing it, but link has one.
And that’s just from a quick observation.
not sure if you guys talked about The Lake Erie Monsters yet. Clevelands new AHL team.

in reference to lebron and shaq, each patch represents previous all star game appearances
Don’t remember the year, but I Seem To Recall that at least once, the NBA went “MLB” in the All-Star Game… and had the players wear their regular home (or road) uniforms!
I might be the only one, but I liked that look, which also eliminated the “which guy’s gotta change his number for the ASG” problem.

Pretty sure those are there only to past all star games played in by that player. LeBron can only have two and Shaq needs his arms to grow before next years game as he is out of room.
And those may be he best looking all star unis I can remamber.
I agree, the all-star unis aren’t that bad. Can’t wait to see how hideous the Pro Bowl gear is.
The suits on the side of the jacket are almost like merit patches for previous All-Star games the player has appeared in, hence why Shaq has about a million and LeBron has significantly less.

You gotta read the whole article Paul wrote man. The sleeve patches are to show how many All-Star games the players have been to. LeBron has only played in 4 games, I believe, since he has been in the league 4 years. Shaq has played in 14 which is why his sleeve would have all four suits.
Read more carefully next time.
I really thought I would hate the all-star uniforms. I thought the diamond pattern was going to go all over thebottom of the uniform but it didn’t. Today, after seeing the official uniform I did a complete 180 and love them now. Especially the East’s. I could do without the logo creep but it’s not too bad. I even kind of like the two toned back, not all that much, but I can deal with it.
The warm up jackets are very cool as well, especially the East’s. I just love that blue color. Good job by the NBA and adidas, well, kind of good job by adidas, the logo stuff is kind of annoying.
I am disappointed in the warmups. Not because of how they look, but because they exist. One of the cool things about the All-Star game when I was growing up (late 70s early 80s) was seeing all of the players wearing their regular warmups over their all-star unis. It was kind of a nod to the way baseball does it, or the helmets in the Pro Bowl.
I even remember one all-star game where David Robinson’s warmups were stolen from his bag, and he had to wear an extra Orlando warm-up that Shaq had.
link is the link to the Lake Erie Monsters that J-Rob mentioned. I think it is a very creative logo that has minor league hockey written all over it.
I hate the NBA now more than ever, and those uniforms are reason to hate them even more. I did like how they did it for a few years when the players wore their own, white vs. nonwhite. Of course I think the coolest all-star unforms were in the mid- late 80’s.

I hated when they had the players wear their own jersey. No originality. No special All-Star game vibe. It just looked dumb.
I don’t really follow the NBA but I must admit that the ASG logo for this year’s game is total class. Plus the uniforms are very palatable as well.
This logo creep stuff has got to stop… What is wrong with link If you take away the cardboard piece you are left with a regular notebook, with one tiny swhoosh on it. The manufactures label is no bigger than the label for this link notebook. I don’t hear people complaining that they are schilling products for Mead when they use these. Also what Nike has done is no different than link or link If the company produces a product, like it or not Nike produced the notebook, they should be able to put thier logo on it, which Nike has done in a rather understated way.
The bottom line is don’t rip a company for making a certain product and maybe pricing it a little higher than the compitition, the bottom line is if there is a demand for the product it will get produced, if there is no demand the product will fade away. Obviously there is some demand for the products Nike, Adidas, Rbk, et al are producing so just get over it.
I’m sorry if I sound a little hostile, I tried not to, but I just feel that the logo creep complaints are getting out of hand.
Biba Golic is very pretty.
A question or two about how adidas’ sponsership works:
Does adidas provide the all-star gear gratis as part of their deal or does the league have to pay for them?
On a similar note, do teams get all of their adidas gear free? How does someone like Gilbert Arenas affect this as he is prone to give away his jersey after every game (or is it only home games).

Excellent points. It makes me mad when it’s plastered on a jersey or when they feel the need to put it on every piece of equuiptment the player has on but when it’s on a product on the open market it’s the company’s job to make sure you know who’s it is. I don’t like having to be a walking billboard either but sometimes it’s inevitable. I actually think Nike does a much nicer job with their logo platering than any of the other major sports companies, especially adidas. Nike hardly ever puts their older logo that says Nike above the swoosh anywhere, it’s always just a small nicely placed swoosh and it doesn’t look all that bad. Sometimes it’s a big swoosh across the chest and it still doesn’t look all that bad, but a little less subdued. adidas runs it’s three stripes down the side of anything they sell, and puts their other logo on it as well as if the three stripes didn’t already tell us who made it.
The All-Star jersey I thought I’d seen was predominantly silver instead of blue. These are much better.
On a totally separate note, I SWEAR Paul made reference to an MLB team (I think the Blue Jays) that kind of had an NFL-ish numbering system for its players at one point. I tried like heck to find it last night (hence, all the Google searches, Paul, if you look at that sort of thing). Does anyone know about that? I might have read it in a book somewhere.
hmmm… take a look at the All-Star collar. I wonder if they would start to consider putting the NBA logo directly underneath it?

I am pretty sure that the Cubs used such a system in the 1960s. The manager/coaches wore 1-5, catchers 6-9, infielders in the 10s (Banks 14 Beckert 18 Kessinger 11 and Santo 10), outfielders in the 20s, and pitchers 30 and up.
I’m digging the hell out of the whole theme and most of the uniform. For once, everything seems to be working (except the triple-stripe down the side of the shorts, that looks like a sucky afterthought).
I’m with Pat and Brooks (comments 16 and 20).
If Nike either made the notebook or another company licensed it, then it’s going on the notebook. Why? To try to sell more.
Yes, it’s not a better notebook – aren’t they all the same? If someone wants a Nike notebook, and they want to pay for it, then they will. That’s their choice.
(BTW, Nike has more than one trademark registered in paper goods.)
I find it different than my Sixers jersey with only the Sixers logo on it or my Flyers jersey with the manufacturer’s logo on it, too. Two different issues. I like to represent the teams I’m a fan of, not the jersey manufacturers, in that case.
not sure if its been noted earlier, but while reading that the pirates will have STYX play their park after a game, this note was at the bottom. (i found it thru buster’s blog)
The team also announced it will unveil its new alternate uniforms — red is being reintroduced to the color scheme — and new spring training uniforms at 4:30 p.m. Friday as part of PirateFest, which opens a half-hour earlier. The opening hour of PirateFest is for season-ticket holders only.

Duh. Nobody’s saying they don’t have the legal right to put their logo there, or that it isn’t a logical marketing move.
I do have one question, though: What the hell does Nike have to do with notebooks?
I like tis year’s All-Star uniforms. The jerseys and shorts are nice and I actually love the sleeve patches on the warm-ups. As far as the logo creep goes, I am not a fan of too many logos from the company taking the place of the team or event name. School names, team names, All-Star patches, etc. should be center stage. However, I think the three stripe thing is more of a design element than the name or a small swoosh. You may like or hate how the stripes are incorporated into the overall design, but I think that having a recognizable design element that represents your company is much more pallatable than plastering logos everywhere.
The All-Star promo pics had to be taken a while back…they’re hold ing the old new ball…does that make sense???
They are actually holding a new, old, new ball, or something like that. They are holding a new version of the leather balls that are back. It has the all-star game logo on one of the panels but has the old 8 panel design. I was kind of hoping they would find a way to make the leather balls have that cool 2 panel design like the microfiber ones had. I was digging that look.
I noticed the NBA All-Star uniforms don’t have any team logos on them, like the NHL All-Star unis did. The warm up jackets have the individual team logos however. I like when the leagues have a small reference to the individual teams, kind of like the Pro Bowl players use their team helmets.
All in all, MLB does it best with actual team uniforms.

Didn’t someone mention that they made an ABA style red, white and blue all star ball based on the New/Old ball? Any idea what the plan is now?
Also, I remember the every player in their own uni game and was thinking that the West HAD to be away because the Lakers didn’t have home white at the time. (I can’t see the pic due to a stupid work filter).

Nike sells with kids from middle school through college. Notebooks sell with those same age kids. You can’t really knock them for making a product that will sell. If you stay out the way of a line of products that your company has “nothing to do with” then how can you continue to make your company grow. What did Nike have to do with golf, swimming, and other sports before they started making apparel for that specific sport? Now they are among the top suppliers of equiptment and apparel to those sports.
Nike has nothing more to do with notebooks other than trying to make money. That’s not the end of the world. Is it funny to laugh at a Nike notebook because it’s something that you don’t normally see in the market? Damn right. Is it wrong in any way shape or form for them to try to make money off of a product that they normally would have nothing to do with? Hell no.

And I am with the masses when I say MLB does it the best when it comes to all-star game unis.
I hate to play the Devil, but as much as MLB usually tries to pay homage to the past, I can see them having hte players all wear a specific all-star jersey in the game.

Silliness? Absolutely. But if you register a TM in something, you have to show evidence that you use it that area.
So if you wanted to register a TM in paper goods, you have to provide evidence that you’re stamping it on those goods and selling those goods across state lines.

Paul if you had stated this in the blog, rather than claiming “logo creep” than you might have gotten a different response. However, you were bashing Nike for putting their logo on a notebook. And even though you were quoting a reader, you were still condoning the comments by publishing them. Is Nike an clothing/sporting goods company yes, but do they have the right to branch out into other markets, of course. I for one see nothing wrong with them going to paper products, or medical supplies, or automotives for that matter. If they have the ability to expand their company, then why bash them for it. I work for a pharmaceutical company, I would have no problems if my company decided to start manufacturing food products, or some other non-pharmaceutical related products.

Then there was the logo flap. Reebok made the official team sweats for the entire 1992 U.S. Olympic team. Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, among others, were (and still are) Nike guys who went as far as to drape the American flag around themselves to hide the Reebok logo.

perfect! i love it.
brooks, i agree wholeheartedly with your comments in posts #45 & 52. a company doesn’t have to bring anything earth-shattering to the table when they present a new product. if they can produce the same thing the other guy does and make some money by charging a little more for it, good for them. if it weren’t for that, we would all drive the exact same car, wear the exact same shirt, live in the same type of house….you get the picture. i have no hate for nike, reebok, or adidas for wanting to put their logos on their products. they generally make (or at least put their logos on) high quality products no matter what type of product we’re talking about.

There is a huge difference between Paul Lukas and Nike. Mention the name Nike, or the Nike swoosh to 10 people, and 10 people will know exactly what you’re talking about. Mention Uni Watch to 10 people, and you’ll get a lot of strange looks. The fact is that Nike is a well known corporation, and they do not need their logo on everything they can possibly put it on. Paul shills Uniwatch gear because he is providing a service, and knows that the diehard readers of the blog want some goods to show off their favorite website. And by the way, if you were offered millions you would turn it down?

The Pittsburgh Pirates will unveil a red alternate jersey at PirateFest today at 4:30pm Eastern time.
The Bucs reintroduced red as an accent color about 10 years ago; even had a red-billed alternate cap. Last year they eliminated the black alternate jersey and any trace of red on the uniforms aside from the Pirate log’s bandanna.
I’m curious to see what the design is. Not too many red baseball jerseys are all that attractive.

Sigh. I barely know where to begin with this, but let’s start with the “Tattoo Update” section of link.
The idea that “you’d do the same thing in a heartbeat” is offensive — not just to me, but to everyone. If reflects the (false) notion that everything in life can be reduced to a simple financial transaction. In fact, the things most of us value most — art, love, charity, faith, family, citizenship, morals, and just the basic notion of doing the right thing — transcend economics. If you really think anyone will do anything for money, I feel sorry for you.
This applies heavily to sports, because sports teams aren’t simply business entities — they’re also civic entities. That’s why we care about them so much! That’s why the imposition of corporate branding on teams (or team uniforms) is so problematic.
I don’t hate corporations per se, but I distrust them, because their function is to create profit as an end in itself. There’s nothing wrong with profit (personally, I’m a fan of capitalism, my father owned his own business, etc.), but there’s plenty wrong with profit with no regard for consequences, which is how so many corporations operate. Those consequences can be huge (global warming) or subtle (Reebok logo on NFL jersey sleeves), but they’re usually bad news.
The difference between a Nike notebook and a Uni Watch coffee mug — I can’t believe I even have to explain this — is that Nike has a history of imposing its brand in places where it doesn’t belong (I won’t list them all, but you know the examples). It’s part of a strategy to create the illusion of a “Nike lifestyle,” and to elevate the company’s brand over the brands of the teams it outfits. It’s also part of a multimedia advertising blitz that has made it increasingly difficult to go anywhere without seeing a swoosh. That’s not branding — that’s hegemony. I’m not trying to elevate Uni Watch over anything, and I certainly don’t want to create a Uni Watch lifestyle or wallpaper the world in Uni Watch logos — I’m just letting fans support the site and express their enthusiasm, just like I express my enthusiasm when I wear a Cheap Trick T-shirt.
Yes, I realize there are lots of Nike fans, and they want to express THEIR enthusiasm — maybe via a notebook. OK, so they can. But given the company’s swoosh-o-rama tendencies, they’re always gonna be open to criticism when their logo shows up in unexpected places. That’s not “bashing” — that’s cultural criticism, which is part of my job.
I like it a lot! Wish I lived in Cleveland – I could use a PA Announcing gig….haven’t had one in a few years since I left Marist College.

On Nike:
I went to Penn State, I was a freshman in 1994, which was the first year that Penn State began to wear Nike jerseys. It was also the first year that Nike began to manufacture Jerseys. Three schools were part of the first test run, Alabama, Penn State and Florida State. I can say without any hesitation at all, that it was very cool at the time.
Since that time Nike has had a corporate partnership which has been very good for our University and imagine profitable for Nike as well. I think the logo is classy, and really don’t mind it on our jerseys, although I do wish they would put it on the shoulder instead of the chest. Frankly, it is a small price to pay for a very important piece of corporate sponsorship that pays for facilities and athletic teams.
I don’t like the uniforms that they design, but that on the school, not Nike. Notice that the three test run schools, still wear, for the most part, the same uniforms that they had more than a decade ago. Ugly uniforms are not a requirement of the Nike sponsorship deal. They will sell you whatever you want. PSU, Texas, USC, Ohio St., Oklahoma have some of the all time classic uniforms, and they are all Nike schools.
One other thing I have noticed. When I watch sports on TV, I love classic uniforms. When I play softball, I want my name on the back, a patch on my sleeve, etc. For whatever reason I think it makes you feel more professional. I think college kids like really fancy uniforms, and if they change every year (or week as the case may be) all the better. It’s a cheap way to help recruiting.

Never occurred to me. Let me think about it. [About 30 seconds pass.] Honestly, I’m not sure I’m comfortable making it available for download on the site. But feel free to create your own.
Well the double standard continues. Paul, I like reading your columns dealing with uniform updates, but the Nike bashing is getting old.
Paul, you are extremely hypocritical. This is the last I will say about it. You put the Uni Watch stuff out there because it will put a little bit of money in your pocket, maybe you wanted the Uni Watch readers to be able to show they are a fan, but the main reason you did it is for money. There is nothing wrong with that, but you are stating it is wrong for Nike and it’s 26,000 employees to make money and put their name out there, but it is not okay for you to put your name out there so you and your webmaster can make a little cash. Paul, normally I agree with most of what you say but…Nike was not created to plaster their logo all over the place, that is just what their business has evolved into. Like you, they were created for a singular purpose that eventually morphed into a copr that has revenues that exceed the GDP of some countires. Where Uni-Watch will go, I don’t know but I reckon that if it does become a household name we could see things that we would not have though possible today. Not that you would be a seel-out but companies can head in directions that were not their original course. Not only can they, but to be up to date and relevant I almost say they should.
My time is done and I thank you for yours.

Thanks for the clarification, Pat. Subtle – I like it.
Also, with the mention of MLB wearing their own individual uniforms during the game, didn’t Selig and The Powers That Be try to get the players to wear the American League/National League jerseys DURING the game one year? I recall the players and the union in an uproar and Selig quickly went back to the norm. What year was that…anyone?
I won’t quote Paul’s post as to avoid a humungous post from myself. But…
Your point is well taken Paul and I can see where you would have a problem with Nike (or any other company for that matter) putting their logo in inappropriate places. I seem to recall Nike building outdoor basketball courts in some poverty stricken country and then plastering their logo all over the court and on the backboards as if to say, yea see how socially conscious Nike is. That I have a problem with, like when Oprah donates money to charity then devotes a whole show to telling you about it and then puts an article in her magazine about it. I can’t agree with the corporations there and see your point about that.
But, my only point (I can’t speak for the others) is that the notebook (which is where this all started), as awkward as it may be, is a simple product that pretty much any company, no matter how big or small, can have made with their logo on it and sell it to make a quick profit. Nothing wrong with that in my book. And since people WILL pay a dollar extra to have a Swoosh on their notebook they CAN charge a dollar extra for said notebook. I can see having a bit of an issue with that, but at the same time why does link notebook cost almost $8 while link notebook costs under $6. That’s almost a $2 difference and it’s because it comes with that extra piece of plastic covering on it. The Nike notebook seemed to have the same so maybe that’s where the extra buck comes from.

Ok…this topic has to be changed. I’m at work, picked up my phone, dialed the number, and asked for NIKE!!! I’m not joking. What the hell is wrong with me?
Why did Michael Jordan wear #9 in the Olympics? Why did Barkley wear #14? Did they only issue these small numbers?
Paul apparently did not realize that many Americans have no cognitive dissonance whatsoever. Boy, I can’t wait ’til you visit the capitalist feeding trough known as Dallas!
And we have totally buried one piece of relevant news — the Pirates are adding red to their jerseys? Ack. They already need to dump the red from their logo — which, as far as I can tell, is a man wearing an enormous link on his head — and go back to this guy:

Thank you Miguel for keeping it light hearted. Steno Watch…hilarious.
Haven’t I heard this pro-Nike song before? Let’s just agree to disagree…
You run a great site here, and I love reading 90% of the things you write, however, I 100% disagree with your overall abhorrence for all things Nike/Corporate.
It’s just a guess, but I doubt the money that Paul nets from selling a coffee mug or two barely covers his bandwidth costs to run this site…a site provided so we can talk about uni’s and YOU can post your comments.

But they aren’t selling morally wrong products like those. They are selling notebooks!
I know, I know — I was just referring to the supposed “If it sells, then it’s OK to sell it” tautology.
Here’s something that’s occurred to me over the past hour or so: If the notebook had a GIANT swoosh, covering the entire cover, I think that’d be fine. Pretty much the same as a t-shirt, or having Spider-Man on your notebook — it’s a way of saying, “This is my thing, I’m into this.” It’s promotional. But the smaller swoosh gives the message, “This is a Nike-made notebook, built to the same high-performance standards as a Nike sneaker,” and I think that’s silly — c’mon, a notebook is a notebook is a notebook. So in this case, I’d actually prefer a bigger swoosh (and would not have bothered posting anything about it if that’s what the reader in question had forwarded to me).
All of which shows that there are lots of nuances to these issues. It’s not just as simple as “bashing,” despite what you may think. Believe me, I think about all this stuff a LOT.
Paul runs a site about uniforms and their aesthetics. Since uniforms are a major piece of clothing in today’s society, Paul has a right to put his logo on a T-shirt, just as Nike does.
Paul’s point is that Nike ketchup, Nike cars, Nike airplanes, Nike milk cartons, Nike laptops, Nike coffee, and Nike soap all have one thing in common: they don’t apply to Nike’s overall branding of being a sports equipment and apparel manufacturer.
Paul runs a blog. For all of his hardwork, making a few bucks by selling his untrademarked logo and entity helps him bring us more info as he has some extra cash to make interesting jersey catalogue purchases and make trips to places we all can’t visit. His money doesn’t go into spreading his brand across all media and all markets.
If you want to compare Paul to Nike, donate a couple of million of dollars to Paul via Paypal, and see if he changes his blog and trademarks the Uni Watch brand. Since I am 100% sure no one will ever do that, Paul has a right to express his views on his blog. He doesn’t say things that I agree with 100% of the time, but I respect that his opinion differs from mine.
Paul, keep up the good work. I, for one, don’t appreciate having logos slapped all over the place. Just because it can be a billboard doesn’t mean it should be.
I’m waiting for someone to slap a Nike logo on the Mona Lisa just because Nike can. Now that I’ve said it, I give it 10 minutes before it’s photoshopped.
Oh, and I bought an Atlanta Flames jersey from Distant Replays yesterday. Now I gotta find someone who can affix link #10 on it…

I’m with Paul. Pure capitalism is worth scrutiny. Nike is in it to make money, and no one can blame them for that, but it is humorous at times the lengths they’ll go to increase their profit margin. There’s nothing amoral or illegal about it, it’s just humorous to some of us, and it is nowhere near exclusive to Nike (blame that on the easily recognizable and iconic logo). This site is different from pure capitalism. Sure, they offer logo-printed coffee cups, tats and tees, and they have a few banner ads, but there’s no subscription fees, no pop-up ads, no amorally-distributed-to-advertiser mailing lists… none of those things that other popular sites do to increase their profit margins. This is a fun site that relies on user donations and purchases in order for Paul and Ek to keep it afloat. I really don’t see an issue.

That’s the best point anyone’s made all day and I completely agree with it. I’m not a guy that thinks you just bash Nike to bash Nike. I don’t even think you bash them all that much just enough to make us notice their stupidity and the absurdity of logo-creep, of which they are the biggest offenders (with adidas coming in a VERY close second).
I think about this stuff a lot as well. Not from a marketing standpoint but from a graphic design standpoint, which is why I appreciate this post so much. I really never thought about it that way.

Nolan, I agree with you. I actually like this product, though, because the pedometer is the tip of the iceberg. It’s not a Nike iPod, It’s an Apple iPod with a Nike dongle which Nike likely designed to put into a space in Nike shoes (which now exists, thanks to this product) and allows you to track your running. Nike’s biggest crime against humanity is altering team traditions for their own marketing agenda. See 2005’s college football mismatched sleeve uniforms as a prime example of why nike is the devil. And because Nike gives a big check, these teams will wear trash bags with a swoosh if they were told to.

Having worked there, custom work is ridiculously expensive. However, since they have all the old NHL lettering templates, they should be able to put something togather for you. I believe the most expensive jersey lettering template they had was about $90 USD, not including the number on the back or sleeves, for triple-coloured fabric. However, that price was from six years ago. It may have gone up in the past six years.

That is advertising, not marketing. There’s a big difference.
There is a difference but the goal is the same. Get your name out there and as a result sell more merchandise (i.e. profit).
My attitude towards all of this is simple. If I disagree with the direction of a corporation I choose not to do business with them. Whether that’s product placement, inappropriate advertising or merchandise that is not of a superior quality. It is a choice.
I would choose to save the money and buy a different notebook and I choose to buy generic cerals. But the sneakers I wear have a swoosh. Why? Because they fit me better.
I would prefer to not see a swoosh on everything but it is my choice to watch a sports event (wherethey are displayed), or to buy Coke instead of RC Cola (is that still around?). Life is a series of choices and we all get to make our own.
I’m still with Paul on the “Purple Issue” and “Ditch the Black” (sorry Minna).

Also, my two cents about the logo/branding issue.
The difference between a Uni Watch item and a Nike swoosh-ed shirt is that those wearing a Uni Watch shirt want to advertise for Uni Watch. Same with a team logo – we want to show our pride in the things that we wear. If Nike had a few “Nike Pride” shirts for people who wear Nike because they are proud of the company, fine.
The point is that you can’t get a Nike anything WITHOUT a swoosh. If they have the best shirt/pants/shorts/etc. on the market for runners and I want to buy it, I either have to provide free advertising space on my body or sit and black out or rip out their logo.

we all seem to agree that the super bowl will feature two of the best looking uniforms in the league. of the teams who didn’t make it, which unis would you change and how?
i’d love to change the chiefs’ color scheme. the design elements are great. there’s no teal, black (except for the arrowhead outline on the helmets), alternate uniforms or any of that garbage but the ketchup and mustard are horrible looking. if they could tone down the colors a little to a maroon (crimson…whatever) and an old gold color, i think that would be a definite improvement. something along the lines of florida state colors or the throwbacks that the redskins wore back in ’94 or whenever that was. those colors look great. i’ve never been a fan of bright red as a primary color on a football uniform.

Going back to yesterday’s discussion of the link, I suppose there’s no chance of the NHL moving the league crest back to the rear hem now that the jerseys will be untucked? Presumably, that’s the reason they were moved from the hem in the first place.

This spawned an idea…I’m sure we would all love to put faces to these names, so how about we pick a day and all post a pic of ourselves in our favorite jersey? What do you think? Good way to show off these expensive duds too!
Here’s something that’s occurred to me over the past hour or so: If the notebook had a GIANT swoosh, covering the entire cover, I think that’d be fine. Pretty much the same as a t-shirt, or having Spider-Man on your notebook — it’s a way of saying, “This is my thing, I’m into this.†It’s promotional. But the smaller swoosh gives the message, “This is a Nike-made notebook, built to the same high-performance standards as a Nike sneaker,†and I think that’s silly — c’mon, a notebook is a notebook is a notebook. So in this case, I’d actually prefer a bigger swoosh (and would not have bothered posting anything about it if that’s what the reader in question had forwarded to me).
For the record, I’d like to say MY notebook’s cover is the same as the one in the photo. There are three NIKE basketballs with swooshes that are kind of subtler, and in the photo you can BARELY make out the largest one in the lower left corner.
These notebooks are targeting people who like BASKETBALL as much as people who like NIKE.

Actually, my reading abilities are more than adequate, thanks. You whine about the “Nike bashing,” you take pot-shots at those people who agree with Paul, and you whip out the playground defense strategy of the other kid threw rocks too, so you shouldn’t get in trouble for it. OK, then.
There is no double standard being dealt here. The fact that Nike happens to be the most pervasive at saturating everyday products with their logo doesn’t make Adidas or Reebok any less culpable. It merely makes them still in 2nd/3rd place. Furthermore, while Adidas is indeed creeping onto NBA unis and other sports apparel, I have yet to see, for example, and Adidas Notebook.
However, if you would ask politely instead of being insulting, maybe Paul and his “sheep” would bash Adidas more, just for you!!

On a quick search, Nike has at least 6 registered trademarks that describe some kind of paper goods. So they claim that they make paper of some sort.
Yeah, and I can register Uni Watch trademarks for paper goods if I want, but that doesn’t mean I’m suddenly a paper goods baron. And Nike can register a trademark for little swoosh-shaped pieces of puffed corn breakfast cereal, but that doesn’t mean they’re suddenly Kellogg’s. This type of self-justifying “they did it, so it makes sense” reasoning doesn’t work.
Look, they can (and do) slap their logo on whatever they want, but the whole thing smacks of Swoosh Nation silliness.
I made a mistake and clicked on that picture whilst I had a mouth full of Diet Pepsi, let’s just say I am now toweling of my monitor. Oh, yeah, baaaaaa . . . I assume that I am being called a sheep since I don’t like what Nike stands for (along with Apple, Microsoft, McDonald’s, and other corporate giants) as well. Of course, that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the occasional Big Mac while I type documents in Word format and listening to iTunes radio. Lighten up people, it’s Paul’s opinion, he is entitled to it, you are entitled to disagree, and I am entitled to agree.

Well the double standard continues. If Nike had put their logo on the front of the NBA all-star shorts and jerseys plus the sides (three strips = Adidas) then Paul and his little anti Nike sheep would be having a heart attack. Paul, I like reading your columns dealing with uniform updates, but the Nike bashing is getting old.
Baaaaaaaaah. I have owned Nike apparel, I’ve even recommended the Shox to one of my kids who is a runner, so I don’t hate the company. But how can you possibly not understand the difference between a small time thing like UniWatch trying to offset some costs (Hey Paul, what kind of cookies do you guys like?) and a corporation trying to inundate all aspects of life with their logo to create a “lifestyle†that plays to their profit margins?
In a society where excess is becoming average, Nike seems to be following the path towards overdoing it. However, like everything else, consumers have the -choice- of products. If Paul chooses not to purchase that purple Nike sweatshirt, that’s his choice. Just like you have the choice to find another Uni-based column to read.

First it is your opinion that nike is the worst offender, do you have proof to back this up. And if you read my first post, you would see that there are Adidas Notebooks, just look link
When notebooks become a standard feature of a uniform, we’ll talk. Until then, as mentioned above, the AdBusters message board is the place for that conversation.
I read this blog everyday and yes you sheep there’s a Nike double standard on it
Everyone’s free to disagree with me about Nike. And I’m not trying to revive a discussion that everyone’s tired of. But I’m genuinely puzzled by the “double standard” talk. I mean, did anyone read the first paragraph of today’s blog post? It’s a critique of Adidas’s logo creep. And I frequently have issues with Reebok, Majestic, etc. when it comes to corporate logos on uniforms. Seriously, I think I’m pretty consistent on this point. So where’s the double standard?
Now, it’s true that I’ve never dumped on Majestic for putting out a notebook. But that’s because, to my knowledge, they’ve never produced one.
Shame that Paul and the other Meats… er, Mets fans out there won’t get to enjoy the Majors’ best link next year.
Awesome. Reminds me of my favorite Redd Foxx joke: “What’s the difference between a pickpocket and a peeping tom? A pickpocket snatches watches.”
Is logo creep taking over college basketball?
Paul, you are extremely hypocritical. This is the last I will say about it. You put the Uni Watch stuff out there because it will put a little bit of money in your pocket, maybe you wanted the Uni Watch readers to be able to show they are a fan, but the main reason you did it is for money. There is nothing wrong with that, but you are stating it is wrong for Nike and it’s 26,000 employees to make money and put their name out there, but it is not okay for you to put your name out there so you and your webmaster can make a little cash. You run a great site here, and I love reading 90% of the things you write, however, I 100% disagree with your overall abhorrence for all things Nike/Corporate.
I disagree with you Brooks based upon a conversation that I had with my Brother-In-Law yesterday about this site. My BIL know nothing of sports other than he used to play D1 football and still doesn’t watch the game. When we discussed my reading/active invovlement of this site we discussed the counter that shows the number of hits per day here (currently averaging well over 27,000 hits per day). Had Paul wanted to do it for money, as you said, then this board would be a blinking mess of ads and pop ups, a lot like Myspace. But it’s not. Paul has selectively partnered with companies that fit the tone of this site. So just based upon what is advertised here, you can see that money is not the case. The main reason he put things up for sale on Zazzle was to help pay for the costs of the time and upkeep of this site. I run my own business and nothing is free when you work for yourself. So I personally understand the desire to have this site tread it’s own water financially. And if Paul or Ek pocket a few bucks for all of the effort that it takes to produce what I consider a quality production, then more power to ‘em.

I’ll announce the SF and Dallas party venues on Monday. But I can pretty much assure you that the Bay Area party will be in SF side of the bridge.
To finish my meandering in post 225, my brother-in-law thought it was stupid to not take advantage of all of this hits and make money off the advertisers that would want to be seen here. Paul doesn’t do that because the main reason is not about the money.

There’s nothing wrong with a Nike swoosh adorning an item of athletic wear. Nike is an athletic wear company.
Nike has done more to market college athletics than any company around.
While I don’ t like the template jerseys, Nike isn’t the only company to do it. Look at the adidas basketall teams (Louisville, Wisconsin come to mind) they look the same.
If Nike wants to market a notebook, good for them. Their notebooks are actually made by Mead under the Nike name. So what’s different than having a notebook with a Yankees logo or a Lakers logo or something? Some poeple are fans of Nike.
I agree that Nike gets a bad rap on this blog for some reason. It is well documented that the “logo creep” by adidas is MUCH worse than Nike.
Nike has never made thier swoosh part of the design of their uniforms. Adidas’ three strips logo are everywhere they can fit them.

My 2 cents on LOGO CREEP. A couple of years ago I bought some hiking shoes made by that other NW-based sportswear company. On each eyelet was imprinted (twice) the word “Columbia” (first thought after reading Uni Watch columns back then = LOGO CREEP!). Counting the five pair of eyelets the brand name appeared 13 times on each shoe (once on the sole), plus two of their diamond logos (as seen link).
I can see having a company logo appearing once or twice on an item (notebooks are questionable IMO), but 13 times!! The words on the eyelets are so small that one would have to be a bug to read them!!

Before anyone starts nominating me for sainthood, a few facts:
I do this site mostly for fun. But money is always nice, too. I think of the site as hobby that generates a bit of revenue. Do I wish it was a LOT of revenue? Sure — and maybe one day that’ll be the case. But I’d never resort to pop-up ads or anything like that in order to achieve that goal. One of my rules when John was designing the site’s infrastructure was that I didn’t want ads to appear in the middle of a text entry. (Ads do sometimes appear BETWEEN entries, but I think that’s fine.)
Our display advertisers have so far been “selectively partnered” (Distant Replays, HelmetHut, Bill Henderson’s style guide, etc.) mainly because those were the obvious parties to approach, and in most cases I was already familiar with them. But if someone less obvious approached me, I’d happily take their ad — within certain limits. Example: I have told all prospective advertisers that I will not accept any vibrating ads, or those annoying animated ads that show people dancing or whatever, because those just piss everyone off. Also: No purple in any Uni Watch ads. Ever.
Would I take an ad from Nike? Absolutely! In fact, I like the idea of having them on board — let them play in my stadium, or something like that. Even better (but not ad-related): I’d love to have a Nike exec write a regular column within the site, to give the opposing view to my anti-branding position. Point/counterpoint and all that….
Actually, I have LOTS of big ideas for what this site could develop into. But it’d take a lot more than a Distant Replays ad to pay for what I have in mind. Venture capitalists, I anxiously await your calls….

Unfortunately, the highest-quality (read: stitched-on lettering as opposed to screen-printed) jersey that I own is…a Jaromir Jagr Capitals jersey (insert laughs at my expense here). Once I dig up a little money, I’m going to hit the Indiana U. Varsity Shop and get an authentic IU Basketball jersey, striped warmup pants, and the warmup shirt. That’s about $450 worth of amazing and beautiful sportswear.

Hi all-
Sorry I didn’t enter the conversation until it was long past over, considering it was my seemingly trivial submission to this great site that started the whole Nike fight; I’ve been in class and the library all day, and did not get to check Uni Watch until a while ago. Thanks, first, to Paul, for standing up for my submission, without laying any of the blame on me. Very classy, and one of the reasons I check this site as often as possible. I’ve got to say, the debate was very good, and I wish I had been able to enter it sooner. Much belatedly, here are my two cents…
Here was my reasoning, both for taking the picture, and for submitting it: W&M is the fourth school at which I have either worked, attended classes, or both. These schools have ranged from small liberal arts colleges in the midwest to Big Ten schools, so I have seen at least a sampling of the range of fashion senses prevalent among my fellow classmates. It would be ridiculous of me to claim that I never wear logos; as I write this, I am sitting at a public computer wearing a t-shirt that bears the name of one of my former institutions. I feel comfortable wearing it because I support that school, and am proud to be an alumnus. I have never avoided wearing or carrying anything with the logo of any group or institution that has benefited me.
What I find alarming is the inundation of logos in every aspect and on every product, logos for companies that did nothing for the wearer but sell them a shirt or, in this case, a notebook. I don’t see the usefulness of spending two or three more dollars – especially out of a college student’s already near-empty wallet – just to purchase a logo. Nike’s name adds nothing to the product; they didn’t even produce the notebook. The same can be seen in t-shirts that I see in every class, with such product names as Old Navy, or Gap, or some other clothing producer printed across its front. Why pay additional money to advertise a company that does nothing more for you than produce items you buy?
I have no problem with product or company allegiances, if you believe that company is good at what it does. For example, I seek out products by a specific electronics company when I go shopping, because I have had good fortune with their products in the past. Still, I think the “thank you†I owe them for their fine products is communicated through my payment. Supporting the good craftsmanship of a company’s wares makes sense; paying extra money to provide them free advertising makes no sense.
The Nike logo is everywhere today. Though I would argue that it looks ridiculous to see the swoosh stamped a dozen or more places on half the uniforms in the NCAA and elsewhere these days, they are at least placing their mark on products they designed, and are known to produce. To place the logo on a notebook, and ask students to pay a few extra dollars for the privilege to carry that logo into a classroom so everyone else in the room can be advertised to is just arrogant. The goal of all these little swooshes, big enough on the uniforms to see on TV, and increasingly prevalent enough in the classroom to see where ever you look, is to make sure that you never forgot the company’s existence. It’s the new subliminal advertising and now we are paying for them to advertise to us. I’m just not comfortable that students are encouraged to align themselves with a product to the point that they willingly pay to show off its logo. And I’m angry that everywhere we turn these days is some kind of logo, some kind of advertisement, some kind of message asking you to buy a product. Why is it okay to be bombarded by advertisements from the moment we get up to the time we go to bed? And why would anyone pay money to further the cause?
Of course a simple notebook doesn’t mean the end of civilization (I actually meant the submission to be more funny/less political), but at some point little pebbles like this seemingly harmless notebook began to add up to become today’s mountain of unwanted advertising. The difference, then, between wearing a Uni Watch t-shirt and a Nike t-shirt, I would argue, seems to be the difference in stating “I like this site†versus “Nike has asked me to help encourage you to buy their products.â€Â

Just to add to what I said earlier, I was just looking at my shoes and I realized that the eyelets have “hush puppies” stamped on them. I never noticed this before and this is the only part of the shoe that is branded from the outside. So my conclusion is that having somthing printed on the small metal pieces (eyelets, rivets, buttons…) is very common. It might be more common to have something printed on them than not. I don’t think what is printed on there is intended for advertising, what, I don’t know. Maybe its kind of like “YKK” on your zippers, maybe columbia, hush puppies, etc… make these parts themselves.

Red vests, black undershirts, and the return of that red-billed hat.
Just threw up in my mouth
For some reason, the yellow trim really puts me off. Also, enough with the red alternates already!
Black underbill sighting! The new cap has it, which is the first i’ve seen of the black.
I hate red with the Buccos’ uniforms. Now an all red one? Come on, this is Pittsburgh, black and gold will do. I have the feeling if the team would win sometimes merchandise would sell better and they wouldn’t have to change their uniforms every few years. I also hate the pinstriped ones. They look good in solid white and solid gray. A black alternate would be nice without any red trim. The new hat reminds me of the late Three Rivers Stadium days. I’d rather see the all-gold Stargell-era uniforms come back.
The new bp hats remind me of link. Anyone else see it?
Those Pirates unis are hideous.
Hey Paul, what is your overall opinion on alternate baseball unis. I think they look terrible. IMO colors should only be worn for BP and spring training.
Oh, and I’m down for posting my favorite jerseys on Monday.

Those are wicked fug. The worst out-of-nowhere red unis since the link did it.
And the link Mr. Potato Head is apparently an “NBA Exclusive.”
And here I thought only Red Sox fans thought they were in a different league than the rest of us…
anyone else think that it’s funny that you can buy this with the Yankees potato head at a discount?

It looks like a high school basketball uni. Gawd – awful.
Those Bucs alternates are another case of merchandise sales as the ultimate decision on what looks good. They aren’t awful, but they certainly make our other threads look much better.
I’ll go start the “Ditch the Red” petition.

Ok…you link.
This is what designers do when they are bored.
Hey, that’s nice! And it has Brett’s powder blue front and center. Perfect.
How about; just plain white with the logo smack in middle? again in 1024×768.
right link.
those are truly awful. this from a franchise that gave us the all-yellow ‘we are family’ bumblebee look.
Since someone else brought up RSS feeds in today’s comments, I have a request for Paul and John. My employer recently blocked all sites with “blog” appearing in the URL, so I’ve been deprived of UniWatch while at work for the past week. Let’s not get into how lame it is that my company actually did this, because it certainly is, but I was wondering if you’d consider making your RSS feeds full text, rather than just an excerpt. I can access the Google Reader aggregator, so if the RSS feed was full-text, I could still read at work. Thanks for any consideration with this matter. (I realize there are some advertising revenue implications with doing this, but I thought I’d make the request nonetheless)
(This is two days late, I know)
The covers worn by link in the NHL All-Star Game are not a new concept. After a trade a player might not have new pants in the right size and will just throw these on. In Rolston’s case, he wanted his pants. Just personal preference in a basically meaningless game.
Anyone else notice link? Looks like the ASG logo has been slapped on his thumbs. Didn’t see it on anyone else’s gloves.
Yanic Perrault must’ve been in the can when link were handed link link.

I would have preferred to see the Bucs return to a yellow alternate than go with red, which is becoming all too commonplace in baseball.
Wow, aren’t the Pirates lucky that they released that red jersey after that Uniwatch article ranking cities (btw, if cities lost points for having a dome, then that rule should work inversely and Pittsburgh should get points for PNC Park). Anyways, does this mean that they’re getting rid of those striped jerseys? They aren’t great but exponentially better than all red.

P.S. I can’t wait for Monday when all you guys post your favorite jerseys.
We’ll all post, Minna, if you do. ;)
Ryan B., I don’t have any jerseys, so I will have to live vicariously through you guys. Come on, Natron! Post your North Stars jersey.
I like the red-yellow-black Pirate alternates; they include my two favorite colors (red and black).
I like the Calgary Flames unis which also use red, black and yellow. Just watched them get beat by the Wild! in a shoot-out, and I really like the flaming C. I also like the Wild! in green (although I can’t wait for the switch to red), but it irritated me that the pants were lighter green than the jerseys.
Finally, as a pseudo-fight was going on, the announcers were joking how the new jerseys will be better for fights because they are slimmer (harder to pull) and made of softer material for less road burns (or something silly like that). Funny.
Minna, we must be kindred. I just watched the Pens win in a shootout. The only funny uni bit was that the team has brought in the players’ dads for these two games (at Dallas and Phoenix), and one of the fathers was wearing a jacket from one of his son’s older (minor league) teams, and the announcers thought that the player might get ribbed for it. Must be a guy thing. :P

To the person who wanted the name on their Atlanta Flames jersey, link.
Anyone know how much they charge for custom lettering?
link makes me thing it’s over $80 (1/2 price for printing on their jerseys is $40, and it’d have to be more if you don’t purchase the jersey from them). That’s the reason I never got a lettered jersey until the lockout when Mike Peca Islander jerseys were available for $40 :D
The logo patched on the sleeves of the warm-up jackets only reminded me of the lockout that cancelled the 1999 NBA All-Star Game.
Also, there are many naughty things I’d like to do to Biba Golic. Some of them involving a table tennis paddle…

tessa, my sister in uni commentary (and socio-political commentary as well)! I am really glad you have joined the board.
Are you saying that the players making fun of the one player becaues of his dad wearing his team jacket is a guy thing? I would agree.
Did you buy the rosaries? Hope the Pens stay put; it just would not be right for them to be the KC BBQs or something like that.
Ha. Read link. For those who don’t want to read the link, here it is (Gene W.’s football predictions and what actually happened):
77. The Minnesota Vikings will win every meaningful award for Ugliest Uniforms by an NFL Franchise.
Correct. The only way the Vikings lose this distinction is if the University of Oregon becomes an expansion franchise.
Sad, but true.
Hope the Pens stay put; it just would not be right for them to be the KC BBQs or something like that.
the plan i’ve heard here in KC is that they would be called the Monarchs in tribute to the negro league baseball team. buck o’neill, a negro league player and local legend, passed away last year. the town worshipped the guy so i think they would be doing that for him.
the name sucks but they could certainly do worse.
#52: 52. Once again, the Giants will wear the best-looking road jerseys in the NFL.
Correct. Classics. The Steelers’ road unis are a close second.
Yes, I am reading the article as I post.
I don’t know if anyone has seen these yet, but the Pirates’ will have a new alternate jersey this spring. It’s red.
Here’s the link: link

Amen! If baseball is going to force the dark-colored unies down our throats, the powers that be should at least establish a rule that only one team per game can wear the alts.
How did we get thru all this talk without a Spaceballs reference??
Spaceballs the lunchbox!

Hmm. Quoting didn’t work. Anyway…
The Bucs are keeping the striped jerseys for Sundays and day games. Salomon Torres modeled them in another shot.

I agree 100%
I disagree 100% You people gotta be kidding me: comparing this blog & Paul tattoo’s & etc vs. a faceless irresponsible corporation in process of world-takeover like Nike? I take it those who disagree with all of the Nike bashing have swoosh shoes and swoosh sweatshirts and swooshes all over their clothes. Nike’s oversaturation of the market is sickening, and even got to me as a young teenager in the early 1990s, with all of the Nike Michael Air-Jordan stuff, it really got obscene on TV and other media outlets. And besides, Nike usually makes an ugly garbage product (some of the ugliest shoes & jerseys I have ever seen). Nike is selling a lifestyle. Nike deserves all the bashing and more.
There’s nothing wrong with a Nike swoosh adorning an item of athletic wear. Nike is an athletic wear company.
Yep. Bingo. And Toyota, GM, Daimler-Chrysler all make automobiles and guess what??? They put they’re corporate logos on their products…Who cares?
I’ve never seen one topic (Nike logo creep) so over analyzed. It’s sickening…
Stop it.
Have you seen the Wizards alts, the Pirates Sunday red vest or the Sabres unis… now there’s reason to go ballistic…

Nike is the best sports marketing, product design and forward thinking apparel company on the planet…who is this concealed person anyway, Paul Fireman/CEO of Reebok?
