If It’s Not Scottish, It’s Crap!

plan_scotland_bagpiper_v.jpg

New ESPN column today. Check that — it’s been bumped to Monday.

Meanwhile: One thing I love about Uni Watch is how an offhand comment sometimes leads to a series of connections that can teach me something — or a whole set of somethings — I didn’t know before.

Case in point: On Monday night, I was sorta-kinda watching the BCS debacle while reading through the day’s comments, one of which was a note from reader Matthew Self: “ESPN Classic is showing a boxing match (from the early 1970s, I think, but I haven’t yet seen particulars) in which one of the boxers (I think I heard the commentator call him ‘Buchanan’) is wearing plaid — yes, plaid — boxing trunks.”

I posted a response, explaining that the fighter in question was Ken Buchanan, a Scottish lightweight best known for wearing Scotch plaid trunks while losing his title to Roberto Durán in 1972 (this was the first of Durán’s many world titles).

It wasn’t until the next morning that I saw a further response, from Michael Churchill: “In that case, it’s probably the Buchanan tartan, and it does look like it to me.”

I hadn’t realized there was such a thing as Buchanan tartan. I thought the trunks were just Buchanan’s way of honoring his homeland, but it turns out he was honoring his family name, which is pretty cool. And although I’d never seen any photos or video of him except from the Durán fight, a bit of additional research reveals that the plaid trunks were his visual signature throughout his career, as seen here, here, here, and here. He became so plaid-associated that he titled his autobiography The Tartan Legend.

Wanna see the plaid trunks in action? You can see the 13th and final round of the Buchanan/Durán bout here, and a few rounds from Buchanan’s 1972 fight against Carlos Ortiz are available here.

Coupla notes about the videos: First, check out those “Rocky Duran” shirts being worn by Durán’s cornermen — that was his nickname at the time. And in the Ortiz fight, see the ref taking something out of his pocket at the end of each round and then writing something on it? That’s his scorecard, because fights in New York state were scored by two judges and the referee in those days (instead of the three-judge system that’s pretty standard worldwide these days).

Meanwhile: If you find yourself digging the Buchanan plaid, it’s available on virtually anything you can think of: neckties, bow ties, scarves, mittens, baseball caps, pillows, notebooks, teddy bears, guitar cases, even soccer balls. And yes, of course, kilts.

Speaking of which: Note that Buchanan consistently paired his plaid trunks with white footwear, perhaps as way of mimicking the full-on kilt and stockings look. And don’t make fun of him, because he could probably kick your ass from here to Glasgow.

New Arrivals: Big day for the Uni Watch library yesterday, as two vintage catalogs showed up in the mail. First up is this 1930 beauty, which I won on eBay a few days ago. Aside from the super-cool football jerseys and super-dorky hoops jerseys, there are some surprises. Who knew, for example, that there were so many different leather helmets available in 1930 (note the built-in faceguard on model No. 70H)? Or so many different football pants? Or basketball knee pads? Or that lacrosse players got to wear this totally boss helmet? Also: What’s so special about a “laceless basketball”? Answer: Most basketballs back then were laced up!

In addition, the Rev. Dr. Keith Coes generously donated this 1974 hockey catalog. This one isn’t as scanner-friendly, so I’m only gonna show a few pages, like these cutaway illos showing all the features of their gloves. Check out the helmets — and the mouthguards! My favorite part: the different stripe patterns you could get for the shaft of your stick.

Uni Watch Road Show: Looks like I’m going to be making brief early-February visits to San Francisco and Dallas (the latter of which will definitely see me wearing this). If any readers in those towns are interested in getting together for an impromptu Uni Watch gathering, let me know and I’ll keep you posted as my itinerary firms up.

Meanwhile, an additional tidbit of news regarding the Uni Watch party tentatively slated for February 3rd in Brooklyn (if you think you can make it, send a note to uniparty at earthlink dot net): Looks like the venue will be the 12th Street Bar & Grill, where the presiding bartender will be none other than Uni Watch editor emeritus Miles Seligman. Although no longer in the media game (and who can blame him), Miles was the Village Voice‘s sports editor back when I came up with the Uni Watch idea in 1999, and was the only editor who Got Itâ„¢ when I shopped the project around. He oversaw the column’s first few years and gave it the freedom to grow into its own thing. Or to put it another way, he’s at least slightly responsible for all of us meeting here every day. He’s promised to come up with a few drink specials for us (I’m trying to get him to create a cocktail called a Bloody Uni), and I’m sure he’ll get a kick out seeing the audience he’s had a hand in creating.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Big News out of St. Looie, where several readers report that the Blues’ radio team spilled the beans on the NHL’s plan to go back to home whites next season. … Good catch by Bryan Redemske, who notes that Andy Pettitte was wearing Johnny Damon’s glove for his photo op yesterday. ”¦ “Union College goalie Justin Mrazek appears to be wearing cut-off sweats under his pads,” writes Greg Schwanbeck. “I’ve never seen a goalie (or any other hockey player, for that matter) play with exposed skin below the knee.”

Cooper has a long illustrious history of designing some of the greatest looking hockey helmets known to man.

Behold the link. I’ve never been able to find a pic of these babies in action… wonder why?

While shooting a Dexter hockey game last Saturday, I noted the logo they painted on the wall. Dexter’s teams are known as the Dreadnoughts, and they’ve long used cartoony ship logos, but link caught my eye for two reasons:
1)Does it look like it’s sinking?
2)Note the placement of the (very muscular) arms.

Also worth noting: the logo features the historical spelling (dreadnought); however, the Dexter teams now seem to be known as the Dreadnaughts (as demonstrated by link).

And, in what could be a lot of fun, they’ve also taken to calling themselves the link. However, I have yet to see anyone use that nickname to its full potential.

Hate to burst your bubble, but it is generally the rule that only members of the clan can wear the tartan. In other words, link, but you cannot. Ha!

Anybody else immediatly think of The Great White Hype’s link when they saw Ken Buchanan’s plaid trunks?!

Yeah, he’s not scottish like Ken Buchanan, but in the movie he’s not irish either.. just fought in a plaid kilt.

The illos are fascinating (I love any explanatory graphic like that highlighting the scientific features of, well, anything), but the best part of the day so far has been the fact that the beefy arms on the Dexter logo are the same beefy arms on link.

Wow, what an honour! Namechecked by Uni Watch!!

Having already been link, I guess I have to go for The Sports Guy now, for the ESPN triumvirate.

Ron, I didn’t even notice that, and I love Trogdor. That’s hilarious.

Great — now I’m probably going to laugh every time I shoot a Dexter event where that logo appears. The Dexter Burninators.

Whats up with link on the cover of that link.

The cover of the Boston Globe today had an article about how the Patriots are going to try to stop LT. They showed a big picture of his nameplate and back of his head. There seemed to be an exclamation point after the ‘T’ in Tomlinson.’ I had trouble linking pictures from getty images, which is where I found them, but you can see it on a few of the pictures on this link, this link, and this link. But this is only on the dark blue uniform, possibly the same game so it could just be a wierd marking that somehow got there. Anybody know anything about this?

Alright, so those links didn’t work all that well. I know there is a few pictures of it from the Denver game, just read the caption below the thumbnails to make sure it’s the Denver game.

Despite my hatred for the cowboys, as a jew, I have to know where that Jewboys T-shirt came from. It’s awesome.

Sorry, but given the fact it’s the same arm and they’re in a weird place just had my mental Strong Bad muttering, “Yeah, that looks good… sticking out of his neck there.”

For those of you who were reading yesterday…

    I HATE YOU ALL!!! :)

I’m driving home from work and get on the highway. A truck moves over to let me on and as it passes by me I notice it’s one of the “Federal Express Express” trucks and all I can see is THAT DAMN ARROW between the “E” & the “X”. Aaaarrgghh…I can’t look at things the same way again. DAMN YOU PAUL LUKAS!!!

and now back to our regularly scheduled show

I had a Cooper XL7 – other than the fact that it looked like a little Volkswagen on your head, it was actually pretty comfortable. The two black flaps on the sides flipped open to adjust the size – which was perfect for me because as a glasses wearing player, I had sport goggles that I couldn’t fit in some helmets comfortably.

Looks like I’m going to be making brief early-February visits to San Francisco and Dallas (the latter of which will definitely see me wearing this).

The shirt is made by link, but it doesn’t seem to be available in their online store. Send a note to link and I’m sure they can hook you up.

last night i watched the phoenix suns game and on the back of Amare Stoudemire’s jersey it looked like the logo above his name was off center and skewed. I don’t have a pic but anyone who can get a screen shot it was around the 7:48 mark in the 4th.

I was looking at the helmets in the catalog that Lukas posted from 1937. I saw that the price of one of the helmets was $10.50 and knowing that this was still during what could be considered the depression years I wondered what the cost of the helmet would be in today’s dollars.

According to this linkit would be an astounding $142.80!!! That’s about the median for one of the latest high tech polymer, air bladder, titanium facemasked helmets today!!!

Goalies are an interesting case study. My ten year old son is a goalie, and like many other goalies he doesn’t bother wearing the team socks underneath his pads. Rather, he just wears those long, “Under Armour” type compression pants. As a result, there is sometimes an inch of so of skin between the bottom of those and the top of his skates, although nothing quite like this!

I was just thinking about the almight XL7 helemt a couple of days ago…..I had one…I think they were the “shizzle” back in the day but now I look back and they just look rediculous. As for pictures of them in action (besides me as a child), I think I may be able to locate so old Canadian junior hockey pictures…let me see what I can find….

NHL going back to home whites? That’s the best news I’ve heard all day. And if it takes the new uniforms to make them do it…

Well, I’m still pretty pissed off about that, but home whites will go a fair piece to assuage me.

I regularly play with no type of socks on my legs, unless I’m actually a game, and even then, I only use a pair of compression pants.

As a goalie, how much of the time am I going to be spending on my rump with the back of my legs against the ice? The answer: If I’m a decent goalie, hopefully not much.

The only reason I use compression pants during the actual games is because it gets cold during intermissions and I have a tendency to do more splits, therefore I’d like something to keep my muscles warm.

Although my CCM/Reebok contact has not confirmed this as truth and fact, the reason they are going back to home whites is because the new jersey templates don’t allow for a third “alternate” jersey at this time. He had alluded to it, but did not come right out and say it.

Thanks for the No Mas link again. Will this be the day I actually buy the “Rated Rookie” shirt? Only time will tell.

Paul…you’d be hating life in my office today. Two fridays ago, with the Terps and Navy in bowl games, our office (in Annapolis, MD) allowed people to wear Terps or Midshipmen jerseys, T’s & Sweatshirts to work….well, the Ravens play a big game tomorrow…and the place is COVERED in purple today! Ravens gear ALL OVER the place.

There is one cool t-shirt that I’ve seen today. It’s purple. On the front it says, “NFL Championships: Baltimore-4, Indianapolis-0” And on the back, in purple & white, is UNITAS and the number 19.

I understand that Cal Ripken will be going out as an honorary captain for the coin flip…wonder if they’re going to give him a purple #8 jersey.

Anyone able to find a pic of the cooper legends catcher of yore? I rememebr an old Great Skate catalog with it. Instead of a cheater bar it had another tiny pocket! Needles to say it was deemed illegal soon after its introduction.

For what it’s worth, some Texans may just think you’re wearing a tribute to the legendary band, “Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys”… a group that played songs such as, “They Don’t Make Jews Like Jesus Anymore”! If the Jewboys were still active, they’d likely adopt that logo! (grin)

Tartans also had a uni place among Sobey’s employees, Sobey’s is a Canadian grocery chain headquartered in Nova Scotia (latin for ‘New Scotland’) and as a result the employees in the deli and bakery areas used to wear plain black caps with a tartan brim over top of their hairnets until as recent as a few years ago.

Back to sports, I wonder what lovely justification the NHL is gonna use this time for the switch in home threads.

Donruss baseball cards method of designating a card as a “rookie card”

    Very popular in the 80’s

I forgot to include this, from the late 70’s until 2002 there was a Junior team in Hamilton, Ontario called the Kilty B’s, whose logo was a bee, playing hockey while dressed very Scottishly, see link. I personally think it’s the hockey equivalent of the old Bucks logo in terms of awesomeness. However in 2002 the team moved up a division into Junior A and dropped the the B from the name and became the Hamilton Kilty’s for a season before changing the name to the much lamer Hamilton Red Wings the following season.
Erg. I hate the Bruins in white. =/
Speaking of the Bruins, are there any other NHL teams that use a contrasting sock color to their jersey?

The Bruins have, for as long as I remember and as long as I’ve seen, worn yellow socks with the black jerseys. I was going through teams in my head, and every one I could think of matches the socks (Rangers have blue socks, Flyers have black socks, etc.)

Any etams on any other level do this?

I disagree a bit on this though, I like the home whites especially because it gives you a chance t see a few different colors on the ice for home games. I like the idea of the Flames wearing the reds (best current unis in hockey) in Boston.
Am I the only one that things that the “laceless basketball” in the article looks pretty similar to the new (now defunct) NBA ball?
It’s just the fact that it is an old 4 panel ball. It’s missing one seam. While the new ball is a 2 panel ball. With the ball they use now the “ends” have two crossing seams that dissect the 8 panels. The “new” balls don’t have the crossing seams on the “ends” and just have the two interlocking panels. The really old balls have one seam that dissects the ends and goes all the way around the panels but do not exceed the end of the panel.

Confusing language but the best way I could think of to describe it.

Great Skate catalogs were the bomb! Of course, growing up in the suburbs of Buffalo, I could actually go to the store, and bug mom and dad to buy me one of everything in the place. Also can’t forget about the madhouse tent sale they have every August.

But I digress… It’s too bad the NHL is going back to home whites *next year*, as I would have much preferred to see the Sabres wear the traditional white uni’s instead of the blue ones. (And take the $%#%#$ numbers off the front of the traditional uni’s!!!!)

Pettitte was also wearing a cap with a gray underbill for the photo op so either it’s an old hat or players will still be wearing them.

I hate to be Cpt. Obvious here, but nobody’s really mentioned much about the Scottish tartans. Jeff alluded to it in comment #7, but not much else.

Each major ‘clan’ (or family) in Scotland has it’s own unique design. It’s used like shields or family crests are in other parts of Europe. So there’s a lot of history and tradition that goes along with the tartan.

I’m not explaining it very well, but link does a much better job of it.

I have a friend, who is big on his Scottish roots, wear a link tartan link for his wedding. They also used his family’s tartan extensively throughout the link. It was fantastic!

So, after watching a number of both college and pro basketball and football games over the past few weks, I have a semi-logo related question in regards to the footballs/basketballs used.

I know that the NFL uses Wilson’s “The Duke” Official Game Ball, and the NBA uses Spalding’s Official Game Ball.

I also know that Wilson makes an “Official Game Ball for NCAA football, in fact they seem to make several different “Official game balls” for the NCAA, including one with black laces. But I’ve seen a number of games, almost always involving colleges that have unis made by what Paul thinks is Satan’s Incarnation On Earth, aka Nike, in which footballs made by Nike are used.

College basketball is another story altogether as I’ve seen at least 1/2 dozen different brand names on basketballs used during games.

My question is this: seeing as the NCAA just loves to have rules about stuff, and how they love to control things, why wouldn’t they mandate that only the Wilson Official NCAA Game Ball can be used in football games and also mandate an official basketball?

I could give a fuck whose logo is on the damn thing, Nike, Hustler, Rawlings, Playboy, just be consistent.

…the NHL’s plan to go back to home whites next season.

Ok, been doing some research here at work to get through the day, which I can leave at 1 p.m., alright! Well anyway I thought that I would give some info about some tartans. My last name is Chisholm and we have quite a history. I’m still working through a few books as well as are others in my family. This Christmas my wife received a link (and that is not my wife) from my grandparents. I grew up with many link to where when ties were appropriate. Here is also the different types of Chisholm plaid that you can have: link, link, and link. There are some more but don’t have the time to look them up now. Also, here are some link of the family link. I think it’s awsome, I love the boars head on the dagger and it is just a great overall design. There are some different translations for the words “FEROS FERIO” but the easiest and the translation I’ve heard the most is “The Fiercest of the Fierce.”

Hope you all enjoy a little bit of my family stuff. I did. Also, for anyother Scots out there here is a pretty good link for stuff to get. Enjoy!

Brooks does soccer jerseys? I’m surprised by that. I only know them as a running company.

Yeah, the NHL may be going to home whites next year. So what?

Sure, they’ll be in white at home, but they’ll also be in spandex tamplated uniforms. The NHL will give home whites the nod, so that (1) people like us will be one small step closer to accepting the surely horrendous templates if we get home whites back and (2) as someone previously mentioned today, there will be no third jerseys next year – that is until Reebok invents another awful template that they can distribute as a third jersey. This whole thing is just awful. The NHL apparently doesn’t care one bit about their existing fan base; they’re looking to replace each current fan with at least two new ones, and no one seems to care (other than us and Barry Melrose).

I can just see it now: the NHL switching back to the “old style unis” instead of the tight template designs on January 1, 2008 a la the NBA.

Also, for you Canadians: does Don Cherry have a position on these new uni designs?

I’m sorry, but other than both patches being circular, I’m not seeing a similarity. Now if they both had city skylines, I think you would have something.

As a hockey nut, it doesn’t bother me either way – the dark jerseys at home were to enable home teams to bust out alternates every now and then – the new jersey template isn’t condusive to alternates, so color doesn’t matter – it’s all the same logo now.

I think several Texans will think of some sort of Kinky Friedman connection immediately since he did just spend the better part of 2006 in the news due to his running for Governor. His campaign produced action figures and you couldn’t go to any college campus (especially in Austin) without seeing a red and white “Why the hell not?” Kinky for Governor bumper sticker.

I used to play with a guy would wore no socks/pants/anything under his pads, thus having a “naked” back of the leg. Its not something you see every day though.

And as for the NHL going back to home whites… awesome. I’m still confused every time I tune into a game in progress, and I watch a lot of hockey. Its just not something I’ve been able to adjust too. That being said, I can’t see them abandoning the third jersey. One reason being I beleive they sell a lot of them, and one of the reasons they gave for the switch was that most thirds are dark, and it prevented teams from having to bring both sets of sweaters on road trips (although the Leafs, and maybe some others I’m forgetting are white). Of course, they just made that “problem” up to cover up the fact that the dark sweaters weren’t selling well.

Next time you’re in Dallas Ian, you should try Frankie’s, Christie’s, or the MAT (McKinney Avenue Tavern). They’re all pretty decent sports bars and they’re all only separated by a few blocks on McKinney.

The catalogs are very cool. On the football jerseys there’s an option for friction cloth. Never saw that before. Any idea what it was? And now that I think of it shouldn’t offense want slippery and defense want friction in the modern game? The velcro uni?

there’s a super bowl top 10 show repeat on espn right now, and they just showed a shot of the chiefs’ fred williamson with what looks like two different facemasks on one helmet. it looked like it was a two-bar mask and a one-bar stacked on top of each other. there were seperate bolts onto the helmet for both masks. i’m wondering if anyone has any info on this

Apparently the the rumor about the NHL switching back to white at home next year comes from hockeybuzz.com which is probably the least credible site out there for hockey rumors. Also it would make no sense for the NHL to switch when they would have to switch back to dark at home in a few years when 3rd uniforms are reintroduced.

Needless to say the credibility of this rumor is in question.

I’m a goalie and I’ve gone sockless before in the net. Usually the only time I will is when we play at link. Its a heated rink so down on the ice surface its quite hot and uncomfortable (for someone whos grown up with Northern Ontairo winters) and without the socks it makes it a little more bearable.

One time I was too lazy to put on socks when I was gonna be a backup. After the game I heard everyone talking about “the goalie with the bear legs”

For those who said it would rub against you legs … most goalies (me included) wear their straps so loose that they don’t actually rub against the back of the leg.

Just a note about the goalie for union college wearing cut off sweats….From my experience lots of goalies wear sweatpants under their pads…sometiems cutoffs…you usually dont see it at higher levels of hockey because they arfe not technically allowed as it violates team uniforms…but in junior a hockey that is rarely enforced and i have even seen a ohl goaltender wearing under armour shorts underneath with his legs viisble.

Ben, well that is disturbing, too. I don’t think this was a jab at Nike per se, but at anyone who would tattoo an employer’s logo on his or her body. As many people have attempted to explain, it’s not Nike, but the gratuitous placing of logos. Nike happens to be one of the bigger culprits because they are a big company so there are more examples of them doing it than most other companies. I think you are choosing to see what you want to see as far as the villification of Nike on this board.

It is used by all minor hockey associations in Canada who are associated with the Hockey Canada program, I believe.

1)Does it look like it’s sinking?

I can tell you that the name Dreadnought comes from a type of warship. Dreadnoughts were a kind of super battleship that early 20th century naval powers built in abundance (especially Britain and Germany…the naval race between the two was one of the factors that led to World War I breaking out in 1914). The name comes from the first ship to be built in this style; H.M.S. Dreadnought.

To shed a little light on the wrestling conversation. A lot of wrestlers legally change their names so that they can have control over licensing. Stone Cold Steve Austin, for example, can not refer to himself as “Stone Cold” anymore because the WWE retains that as a trademark. So now that he’s out of the WWE, he can only go as Steve Austin.

Andrew Martin legally changed his name in 2005 to Andrew Test Martin so that he can have full rights to utilize his name if he ever stops wrestling as Test for the WWE.

    Couple of things:

    1) The STOP program is nationwide for Canadian minor hockey. My first attempt to find a little red stop sign like th ones they sew on the back of sweaters brought uplink

    2) The link was supposed to be revolutionary helmet in that everything snapped in place – instantly adjustable without a screwdriver. I’ve seen more of them “explode” on players. everyting would go flying. Plus, the interior was like a greay terrycloth, which wasn’t too comfortable. Not many made it to the NHL, but Craig Ramsay wore one. Can’t find a pic at teh moent, but I’ll keep looking. Mario Lemieux wore one for part of this junior career too, until the sk 2000 was put in the market.

Regardless of style, if you tighten the pads snug against your legs, particularly the straps behind the knee / lower thigh, they’ll cut in to your legs and cut circulation as you crouch, try to get up, and so on. No more surreal feeling than trying to play goal when your legs are falling asleep.

Anyway, I took a good look at the giant Dreadnaught logo painted on the wall in the gym. It is very similar to the logo in the hockey arena, but it’s much more compressed. Since it’s so much shorter, the oddly-placed arms aren’t quite so odd. But it is equally cartoonish, and even as a Chelsea resident, I agree with you — it needs to be redone in a much less cartoony style. I’ll post a picture when I get my pictures on the computer.

I also noted that as you said, anywhere the name appeared in the gym (such as on the floor), it was the official “Dreadnaughts.” It would be kind of interesting to know why it’s officially spelled that way, instead of the original spelling.

I can sympathize with you about the overuse of Dreads; Chelsea has started shortening Bulldogs to Dawgs, and it’s being used way too much.

i swear i remember former Canucks’ goalie Kirk McLean having some sort of tartan pattern on the back of his mask. maybe i’m wrong, i don’t know.

Hailing from Scottish descent, Auld honors his heritage and currently wears a colorful mask with the Saint Andrews cross on the top; on one side there is a mythical Griffin which hails from his family’s crest; on the opposite side is the Panthers’ logo; and an emblem of the Scottish shield along with his initials at the bottom.

Nate F, too true, but is it that much harder to dye it black than, say, dark green? Black is always the most expensive. I think part of it is because it is less popular than other colors as well as harder to dye.
actually i somehow missed the tartan on mclean’s mask from the link i posted… probably because it wasn’t the same mask i was thinking of.

The backplate on McLean’s original Canucks mask (the linkone that was changed to link had the same tartan on the backplate. Soooo hard to get a pic of the back of a goalie’s mask. there is a back shot of him on the cover of the EA Sports NHL video game – I’m going to bet it’s the ’95 edition.

    Hey Paul,
I love the site. I always loved watching Mike Benjamin play just because of his socks he wore. When he played for Boston back in 97 he wore Red, White and Blue high striped socks. They looked awesome with the home white. Any other players do this? Is it still legal or are there any restrictions on socks and stirrups in the MLB. Thanks man.
    Colin
