Not quite black, but close enough: Lots of jerseys and other uni elements were in evidence at Darrent Williams’s memorial service yesterday. Additional photos here, here, here, here, here, and here.

I put it in yesterday’s thread, but I’ll say it again.

Two notes from the FA Cup game on Fox Soccer right now (Charlton 0-2 Nottingham Forest at halftime):

    1. Charlton’s close to all black kit, which is saved by black and gold horizontally striped socks. Nice!

    2. Forest’s shirt sponsor is Capital One. They not only have a logo on the front of the shirt, but also on the back, just above the player’s name. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sponsor logo there on a soccer jersey before, it looks out of place.

Coca-Cola league teams are allowed to use the area above the number for sponsorship though not all clubs use that space. I think it’s used in French football too.

link wear sponsors tags above the back number…just not English teams — ’til now, apparently.

Also, it was nice to see a link to Darrent Williams instead of the usual store-bought stuff.

River Plate: masters of the random black bit.

Almost every team in South America has a sponsor in the link of their shirt. In some countries the dont use names in the back of the shirt so there’s more space for advertising, and some use the name link the number.

link on Wayne High School, near Dayton, OH. I don’t like it. I prefer the v-neck style of basketball jerseys.

I don’t know what to say in regards to this thread, but this image disturbs me cuz of his age…I’m 24 as well…but it was good to see a good turn our for such a tragic event

I don’t always read the comments sections, so forgive me if this has already been discussed.

Terry Frei over at ESPN.com has ranked the NHL jerseys from 1 to 30, and I know how much we like to scrutinize such lists. The coming unveiling of the new NHL “style” at the All-Star Game in Dallas motivated him to do this.

Impressive, but I think Scandanavian teams are still the frontrunners link

Norwegian FC Molde, By the way.

I think PL has done a bit on the hockey sweaters of these clubs too (I bring this up because, as was mentioned the other day, European sports clubs host a variety of sports and many teams reach prfessional levels.) If not, check out some link pics.

    Quick google search result:

On this link, you can enjoy the back of these billboards on skates.

And link‘s pics of now Montreal Goalie David Abeischer. Third and fourth from the top are of him at the Spangler Cup (showing even the blocker is for sale!!!). The first from the top is quite an eyesore, IMO. Anyone ever seen MORE advertisement on a jersey?

wonder if…or WHEN..we’ll see sponsor logos on NFL-NBA-NHL unis. not gear logos like reebok etc. I mean, Pepsi, Xerox, Ford. only a matter of time. ?

The ads on the helmets of the Spengler Cup players look especially odd to me. They stick out quite a bit from the helmet, you can see it the most on the player in the white. How to they attach those ads to the helmet? With it sticking out that much I want to guess velcro but doubt that that is correct.

I doubt it’ll happen, but MLS is opening up options. Both Salt Lake and New England are wearing sponsors on the front next season..

And for those of you who don’t like sponsorship on jerseys, there’s sportRed Bull New York.

Ironically, you can see in the fourth photo how he had to (at least partially) cover up the KOHO label on his stick. Only the right logos are allowed to creep in IIHF / Euro hockey.

Watching the International Bowl (hey, all the basketball games were at halftime), I noticed Western Michigan’s unis follow the old Arkansas template. No pictures, but they have the same wide stripe across the front of their jerseys that Arkansas’s football jerseys had a couple of years ago, except WMU’s is gold or yellow, whereas the Razorbacks’ was a deep red, and they only had the stripe on their road jerseys, but WMU has it on both jerseys.

    Been done.
Many links to helmets on the side bar.

MLS has always had sponsors on the kit, no doubt because it’s an acceptable part of football culture.

As for other North American sports, I think the NFL would be the last to fall. They’ve got such a great TV deal that money isn’t really a problem. But with NFL owners like Glazer and Randly Lerner already dipping thier hands in ther English Premiership, and learning all about the financial benefits of selling uni space, I’d never say never.

The NHL’s finances are a mess, despite what you’re seeing with the salary cap, that you will eventually see ads on NHL unis. Bank on it. Nort American fans have already been introduced to it link that it won’t be a big shock to the system when it happens in the bigs.

MLB? Someone’s got to pay those salaries. It’s inevitiable. TV contracts for MLB aren’t keeping up with salaries.

I don’t know where I’d find pics of it but didn’t MLB teams have a some logo on their sleave and/or batting helmets when they played a few games in Japan a few years ago. I don’t know if I’m right but I think it involved the Yankees and that it was preseason.
What team is Aebi playing for in that picture, anyway?
The black shirt with the red S on it belongs to HC Sparta Prague (or “Praha”, whichever you prefer.) To my knowledge, they are not affiliated with A Sparta Prague, the former powerhouse Czech football (soccer) club.

It was NOT preseason. The Yanks and Devil Rays both wore advertising sleeve patches and helmet decals for their season-opening series in Japan in 2005 (or was it 2004..?). Prior to that, the Mets and Cubs also wore ad patches/decals for their season-opening series in Japan in 2000. That was the first time advertising had appeared on MLB uniforms for regular-season games.

Here is a link to the Rocco Baldelli jersey from the 2004 Japan series…with advertising

Paul, how come I can read this article when I’m not an InSider, but if I click on the link that says “Uni Watch’s recent examination of player names on the backs of jerseys…,” it links me to an article that looks like a new article, but it says I need to sign up to be an InSider to read it?

I liked the fact that they kept showing shots of last year’s game during the Virginia Tech-Duke game. Gives you an idea of just how much better this years jersey is than that ridiculous orange they wore last year.

I can’t stand to see the sponsors on soccer uniforms. I can’t even stand the Nike, Reebok, etc. logos that infringe on uniform space.

“I’m honored and somewhat humbled. This is a time in our league right now where there are probably seven or eight Hall of Fame coaches currently coaching in our league,” Payton said Saturday after learning of the award. “I still have tags hanging out of my Reebok gear on the sidelines.”
Sean Payton on wining the Coach of the Year award.

can there be a textual logo creep? im just wondering.
I can’t stand to see the sponsors on soccer uniforms. I can’t even stand the Nike, Reebok, etc. logos that infringe on uniform space.
Yeah, those logos take up a whole 1/4 inch of valuable space. The horror, the horror.

    Give me a break.

And if those logos are so horrifying to you, then how can you possibly watch a game, either in person or on tv without spending the entire game puking on the person next to you and shitting your pants.

    Re: Darrent Williams.

    Quoting Rod Tidwell, Boo-fucking hoo.

if you associate with people who live or try and live that bullshit gangsta/thug lifestyle, you reap what you sow. What I find disgusting is that no mention has been made of the fact that two known practicers of the thug lifestyle Alan Iverson and Carmelo Anthony were in attendance at the party where the shooting happened, along with their thug posses. It’s disgusting that society has gone from when arguments went from talking and being settled via fistfight to now being settled with gunfire.

Disgusting, and even more disgusting is the fact that so many athletes these days revel in the thug/gangsta lifestyle and actively promote it as the way to live your life.

It’s sad to me that people (like you evidentally, #35) are willing to completely skip “What Happened” and go to “I’m sure he deserved it.” It’s a sad thing that is now happening everywhere, it reeks of racism, and nobody yet has much of a clue as to the real motives, so you’re probably wrong.

I went to a Bengals game this year; I suppose if I get murdered it will be because I was in the same building as some people with a criminal history… right?

I’m wathcing the Old Dominion-George Mason game, and Old Dominion has both the school name and the mascot name (Monarchs) on its jerseys–and they have it like Oklahoma and Tennessee used to have it, with both names in full-size block letters, school name above the number and mascot below. I can’t think of any other team that does this any more.

There’s a trick to creating a free-access version of an InSider article. I occasionally do it when I want to point someone toward an old column. I’m not going to tell you the trick (and it wouldn’t do you much good anyway, since you have to be an InSider to begin with in order to execute the trick).

Does anyone ever notice that after about #14 on these lists there are no longer any “good comments”? It is like these guys see uniforms as blank or white, good or bad. It is to the point now where numbers 5-10 or 8-13 are the mediocre uniforms, making all 20 remaining uniforms just bad. They don’t look at individual elements that may have been done well, or even go as far as to explain just what makes the uniform terrible.

Always good to see Phil Knight in our midst.

KC wearing their great white on white, while the Colts are doing the blue top on white bottoms. Classic.

Chiefs are wearing all white. It looks really boring but if Lamar Hunt liked it…. NBC just showed ashot of Dexter Reid for Indy who has his full name on the back of his jersey Like Darrent Williams. I hate the announcers, however.

    Re: Darrent Williams.

    Quoting Rod Tidwell, Boo-fucking hoo.

    That’s pretty crass.

if you associate with people who live or try and live that bullshit gangsta/thug lifestyle, you reap what you sow.

“He deserved it”? He deserved to DIE? Because you don’t approve of his lifestyle or image? As it turns out, reports indicate he was the guy encouraging kids to stay in school and out of gangs.

The guy has been labelled as a good person (and there have been lots of chances to speak poorly of his behaviour). Anyone talking has said he was a good kid / teammate/ person. Not a sniff of seeing this coming, or even hinting at a reckless lifestyle that might have promped this. Hell, shots into a stretch limo with tinted windows probably means the shooterss didn’t even know who, let alone if, they hit someone inside. There’s an excellent chance they had no idea he was shot, and a fair chance that they didn’t even know he was in the vehicle. But he still deserves to die? Absurd.

It’s disgusting that society has gone from when arguments went from talking and being settled via fistfight to now being settled with gunfire.

Have you taken a course in American history? Gun violence isn’t exactly a new phenomenon, dude.

Disgusting, and even more disgusting is the fact that so many athletes these days revel in the thug/gangsta lifestyle and actively promote it as the way to live your life.
As I pointed out earlier, Williams promoted staying away form gangs, according to reports.

Dexter Reid of the Colts is wearing a Darrent Williams-esque full name plate jerseys against the Chiefs. I don’t remember if he has done this before but I saw it and immediately thought of Darrent Williams. if anyone has the tivo fired up, you can see it after the punt on the Chief’s first possession.

Well I should have done my research first, I forgot about Darrell Reid. Anyways, I think that the full name nameplate is very interesting and definitely stands out without going over the top Chad Johnson style.

Why is it that everyone complains about Nike and Adidas logo creeping everywhere, which they do, but the topic hardly ever comes up about the Reebok logo being plastered everywhere, especially in the worst possible places, on NFL unis.
Why is it that everyone complains about Nike and Adidas logo creeping everywhere, which they do, but the topic hardly ever comes up about the Reebok logo being plastered everywhere, especially in the worst possible places, on NFL unis.
its not that most people are complaining about nike’s or adidas’ logo, just the fact that they manage to plaster it everywhere they can. on most football uniforms in the nfl, reebok’s logo is only found on the jersey sleeves and the top of the legs on the pants. on some college uniforms, you will find up to 10 nike swooshes.

Anybody who does not find the Darrent Williams death to be tragic has some issue. Although it is unfortunate that he was the Broncos’ cornerback, it is more unfortunate because of the time he should have had left on this planet. 24 is too young for somebody with his promise. He was trying to educate people on staying out of gangs and had many years of a great career that he had yet to play. To die is one thing, but to die so young is tragic.

Paul, I usually agree with most of the stuff you say on this site and I love you columns, and usually I’m not one to stir up controversy. However, I don’t think the photos from Williams’ funeral (with him lying in wake) are appropriate to post on a site about uniforms no matter what the mourners are wearing. I, frankly, was shocked to see those pictures on your site.

In my opinion, I think the Chiefs have ugly uniforms. Yes, they are simple, but they are also ugly. Great logo though.

Also, if it’s “I” before “E” except after “C”, then why isn’t it spelled C-H-E-I-F-S?

Interesting as that harkens back to the scene in the coach’s office where a good number of the team offered up their spots so Rudy could suit up for the final game. Because the I-E combo in Chiefs follows an H, not a C. “I before E, except after C” means directly after the letter C, not everything after C.

Ben, we got into it the other day over your recreational swearing, so I won’t say anything else about it, despite the fact that it still sickens me. Good showing of your maturity on this one, though.

R.I.P. Mr. Williams. Your time came far too soon. I’m not a fan of the NFL, but losing a young man in the prime of his life like this is tragic and unnecessary. All the best to his family and friends during this time mourning.

I’ve been asked to explain further on my position on the Darrent Williams photos. So quickly, Today must be the toughtest day for his friends and family and teammates, and I think in the manner those photos were shown wasn’t right. I don’t mind the photos of the people wearing the jerseys, but I do have a problem with the ones with his body in them. I don’t see how that shows respect for a great man and member of the Broncos.

How is a picture of someone at his memorial offensive? I think it’s a good tribute

So uniwatch can show half naked women, use swear words, have a fat/drunken santa, but can’t show a man at a funeral? And I bet it’s also OK to have Saddam Hussain’s death on the internet, and also show countless photos of men at war with inflicted injuries? I am gonna have to disagree with everyone who thinks Paul’s taste was in bad jusdgement to post the photos. I find nothing offensive about the photos, and I guess I don’t understand why others do. Maybe if those who find it in poor taste explain why they don’t like it. Because I am very confused why people take offense to it.

I’m sure this has been mentioned in past posts, but regarding sponsorship on soccer jerseys, FC Barcelona just added a sponsor to their shirt for the first time ever. Unicef.

    FROM WIKIPEDIA:
On 14 July 2006 the club announced a five year agreement with UNICEF, which includes having the UNICEF logo on their shirts. The agreement will see FC Barcelona donating US$1.9 million per year to UNICEF, and rejecting significant commercial offers to be the first shirt sponsor of the football team.

Ben – your inability to have compassion in a situation like this makes me feel sorry for you. I know Paul doesn’t like attacks but I pity your immature outlook on this. This man has a family, a mother, father, children and a whole host of others that cared about him outside of his football career. Maybe you have been hurt by the world and don’t have the ability to feel and understand what others may be going through. I don’t know. And I really don’t care. R.I.P. Mr. Williams. Your time came far too soon. I’m not a fan of the NFL, but losing a young man in the prime of his life like this is tragic and unnecessary. All the best to his family and friends during this time mourning.
Way to quote me entirely out of context. Really nice job. You could give Bill O’Lielly a run for his money.

If Williams was as you and others have said, trying to keep kids out of gangs and away from the gangsta/thug lifestyle, then why was he at a party with two well known practictioners of said lifestyle, Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony, one of whom has a felony conviction for assault on their permanent record, (Iverson) and Anthony has been videotaped hanging out and going to parties with known drug dealers/thugs/pimps when he was in Baltimore.

Williams actions by being at that party sure as hell don’t line up with someone who you claim is trying to keep kids out of the gangsta/thug lifestyle. And so what if he was young? What does that have to do with anything? Young in comparison to what? If Williams had lived in the Middle Ages he’d be considered to be late-middle aged to old.

Williams made a conscious decision to associate with thugs/gangsta types in Iverson and Anthony and therefore he has to take responsibility for the possible consequences of that decision.

I have nothing to be ashamed of. You are the ones who should be ashamed for taking a single linee of my post entirely out of context.

Re: Reebok/Nike/Adidas logo placement on unis.

Those posters who are claiming that the above named companies try and get their logo all over the unis are full of crap.

Nike puts the logo on two places, one on the jersey, one on the pants. On the jersey the placement of the swoosh varies, from the chest to the throat.

if it’s a Reebok football uni, then there are 3 logos, one on each shoulder and one on the pants.

Adidas goes with Nike in having two logos, one on the jersey, one on the pants.

As for the poster bitching about the placement of the Reebok logo between the stripes on the 49ers throwbacks a few weeks back, I never heard you bitching when Champion supplied the ‘Niners and the red and blue Champions logo was in the same place as the Reebok logo on the jersey.

    Talk about a hypocrite.

And hears the thing, you can’t even see the logos when watching the game on tv.

Anyways…back to uni stuff. What’s with up with LT’s hair tonight? Tt was either “V2”, or “Y2” in his hair… I am still trying to find a pic for this.

Looks like the basketball god approved of link vertically arched name lettering. Not much of an arch, but it’s there. Does Dook have a link on the jersey numbers?

I’m sure this has been mentioned in past posts, but regarding sponsorship on soccer jerseys, FC Barcelona just added a sponsor to their shirt for the first time ever. Unicef.

    Sheesh. They’re sponsoring Unicef.

    Ben-

I won’t really get into the whole Darrent Williams argument because I don’t know much about the entire thug situation. I do believe that a party is a party and stars are often invited probably not knowing who will be attending, after all, how do football stars hook up with movie stars, etc.

But I agree with you 100% on the logo comments. Stating that NIKE is the only school that puts logos on their jerseys and 10 at that is wrong and overkill. No college football team I have ever seen from ANY brand has 10 logos on it. Players often wear wristbands, gloves, and socks that show logos, but that is in NO way a “part” of the teams jersey, as it is not actually uniform. It is a player’s option.

And I know that this site is FULL of NIKE bashing, but to say that they have TEN Swooshes on their college uniforms is not even a good argument, from anything I have ever seen. Even NIKE’s most sponsored team, Oregon, doesn’t have more than two or three. Here are two pics, link from the front, link from the back, to prove that.

Not trying to defend NIKE, but I am a Ducks fan, and I think they have done well for the team (With the exception of the lightning yellow jerseys on the lightning yellow pants, with the yellow helmets). I think that everone has to step back and take a bigger perspective on the logo scene in sports, in that branding is a part of being successful as a company, and I don’t believe that link company is any more guilty than any link.

I have to agree with Ben on the Darrent Williams thing.

People misuse the word tragedy almost as often as songwriters misuse “ironic” and sportscasters misuse “great.”

A true tragedy is something that occurs unexpectedly and beyond the control of the victim. Someone is sideswiped by a drunk driver and dies. Someone gets cancer and dies. Those are tragedies.

If Darrent Williams had been killed while spending the night with his family or while counseling kids to stay out of gangs, that would be tragic.

But he wasn’t. As Ben pointed out, he was hanging out with those who follow the gangsta/thug lifestyle. I’m not being racist or cruel or ignorant or any other such thing when I say that that particular lifestyle is rife with widespread, petty violence.

Was his death sad? Yes. Was it meaningless? Yes. That’s exactly what the gangsta/thug life is: sad and meaningless. But was it tragic? Not at all.

    Jordan,

I agree that Nike has done a lot of good things for Oregon….However they are approaching the line of becoming to influentual on what the team does. It is almost like they are a booster who can manipulate the program. I know that Bellotti and some admins have said they don’t necessarly like things but Nike is such a huge donor they go along with it!

    Zorro,

I do agree with you. He probably was not totally without fault. He might have made a bad decision to be there. However….Even though we all look…pictures of him in a casket should not be on this site…non the less a consumption junction or rotten!

And I don’t think anyone would use a raci$t reference if they were face to face with someone who would take offense.

“If Williams had lived in the Middle Ages he’d be considered to be late-middle aged to old.”

Let’s not be silly. If a person survived childhood, they had pretty good chances. Even counting the massive numbers of children who died in infancy, the life expectancy was still around 35.

Also, re: Williams. The man went to a New Year’s Eve party with two other noted Denver sports figures. Just because three black men were at a party doesn’t mean it was a gang meeting. See, for instance, this quote:

Williams, Walker, other Broncos and members of the Denver Nuggets basketball team were at the Shelter, 1037 Broadway, for a New Year’s Eve party and a birthday celebration for Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin.

Does this mean that every player on the Broncos and the Nuggets are gang-affiliated?

Did anyone see Roy Williams after his interception in the 2nd half of tonight’s game pull his shirt down and reveal a sticker on his shoulder pads? Did anyone catch what that was?
Anyways…back to uni stuff. What’s with up with LT’s hair tonight? Tt was either “V2”, or “Y2” in his hair… I am still trying to find a pic for this.
by LT im assuming you mean larry johnson since the bolts dont play tonite but still, the thing in his hair is an R for Roc-a-Fella. the record label/clothing line/Jay-Z’a whole thing. he’s their spokesperson or spomnsered by them in some way. so rather than just wear a shirt, he got their symbol shaved in his hair.

also, are some people on this site seriously trying to say that because he was at a birthday party for one of the Nuggets before he got shot that Darrent Williams being gunned down is not tragic becuase who he was around? im sickened at the ignorance here. think before you speak. a man has died, tragically, and you are way out of line.

    Andrew–

Oh please, no one here ever said that because “three black men were at a party” it was a “gang meeting.” The last thing we need is people playing the race card and calling people racists for no reason.

What Ben and I did say is that the party was attended by people like Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony who are well-known and self-professed members of the thug/gangsta culture.

Let me repeat: no one here ever said that all black people are gangsters or that all gangsters are black.

It’s pretty low to resort to the race card to try to make a point.

    The Original Lee–

Look up the word “tragic” and reread my post before you call someone ignorant.

Who you spend your time with does, in fact, make a huge difference.

I took a pic of R. Williams when he pulled down his jersey after the int… but I don’t know how to link a picture from “my pics”.

It looked to me like it said “Jack”
i was at the international bowl today and i wish i had broght my camera to show this ( i live 4 hours from toronto) bt the western michigan bronco’s qb cubit wears a “c” on his jersey. on a side note, he is the starting qb, is the team captain and his old man is the coach.

as well, based on the exciting outcome of this game, i cannot see why the international bowl cannot survive in canada.
I too was at that game. And a great game it was! But it wasn’t just Cubit with the C on his jersey. All three captains that came out for the coin toss had it. One was Cubit, one was Cubit, one was Moran the guard and i dont remember who the third was.

So, because Williams went to a party with the rest of his team, and with the Nuggets, and with plenty of other people from the Denver area, and Anthony and Iverson happened to show up, his death was deserved? Cold, man, cold.
The party advertisement, link Post, doesn’t mention either Anthony or Iverson. For all we know (which isn’t much at this point), Williams may not have known that the two of them were even in the place. Clubs can get pretty crowded.
Also, re: the race card. This whole “gangsta” thing is too often used as a way to attack black people without actually saying. Just because you don’t straight up mention the color of a man’s skin doesn’t mean it isn’t pretty clear what you have in mind.
Bottom line: this man did not deserve to die. The fact that we’re even having this discussion is disappointing in so many ways.

when i mentioned that some college UNIFORMS not jerseys have upto 10 swooshes, I was including armbands, gloves, cleats and hell even visors all of which are nike branded due to the team being a sponsered nike team. if the player was to wear other brands, they would have to be covered like in the NFL. the covering of the logo would actually eliminate logo creep.

that goes for adidas, reebok, under armour (see auburn promo photos from this summer) and even new balance.

On a complete different note, I have a serious issue with the Associated Press taking pictures at someones funeral and then making them public. Having press photographers at a funeral is just disgusting to me. Maybe the family wanted them there taking pics? I just dont know…

Unless Darrent Williams, Allen Iverson, Carmelo Anthony, or Williams’ shooter was wearing a sports uniform, I say we lose this topic. As big a topic as this is, it shouldn’t be so prevalent on a UNIFORM-related website.

In the meantime, Virginia Tech had better unis than Duke and won. The Colts had better unis for the Chiefs and won. Unfortunately, that doesn’t look like it will continue in Seattle tonight…

You need to host it somewhere for free. Photobucket is what I use. It’s free.

When I first saw clips form the actual 1975 GA Tech-Notre Dame game on “CBS Sunday Morning” (they were doing a piece on Ruettiger’s life story shortly before the movie came out), I could have sworn that his name was on the back of his jersey. But pictures from the game show that he did in fact have a nameless jersey that day.

To chime in on a few of the topics of the day:

    – I do not have a problem with the pictures that were posted here today. I also do not have a problem with the AP taking the photos. The AP would have had to be allowed onto the church’s private property by the family (or someone in a decision-making position). They were not imposing. We all have different social taboos. My family has pictures of funerals and graves on our family website. It is a part of our mourning process.

    – This young man’s death is certainly a reason to mourn, and it is a tragedy. A man’s past is not what makes his death a tragedy. The loss of his future does. This young man was, by all accounts that I have read, a good and kind person. He went to a birthday party, for crying out loud.

Watching tonight’s Seattle/Dallas game I noticed that the Seahawks unis had a couple splashes of lime green in them. The trim on the end of their sleaves and a line down the outside of their pants. I don’t have any visuals but has this always been there? At least throughout this season? I was just conspiring that the lime green was connected to the lime green gloves of recent popularity. Anyone know the answer?

I don’t usually comment but I’d like to throw in my two cents about a couple of topics being discussed.

Regarding D. Williams’ death, I think it’s really unfair for anyone to give it the “tough shit” approach. He attended a birthday party, with many people, some of suspect character. That happens everywhere. I can go to Walmart, and there might be 2 convicted criminals standing outside. Should I avoid Walmart? No, I live my life, and ignore those people.

If you do want to brand him with a certain lifestyle, then I think you should at least make sure that his shooting was due to some altercation he may have been involved in. Drive by shootings happen everywhere, most of the victims are innocent people. D. Williams I believe had some character issues but had become a professional by the time he arrived in the NFL and showed no signs of deserving what happened to him. I don’t know that for fact, but I’ve read that in several papers. Since they’re still investigating, we don’t know either, so maybe it’s not a good idea to pass judgment on whether a killing was “deserved”. But you all have attempted to justify your opinions, so at least everyone’s taken an intelligent approach to it.

Regarding the photos, I was surprised when I saw the open casket photo. It’s not a picture I would want to see, but we’re all adults and can handle it. I think that if the photos were posted as a uni-reference to a funeral, then it’s appropriate to the nature of the site. I don’t think Paul was trying to exploit the sadness of the situation for benefit in his website.

Basically, if someone dies, it’s upsetting to someone out there, regardless of if they deserved it, and I think people should remember that.

We had a guy here who died at 10 p.m. Christmas eve. 21 years old, great athlete, very smart, one of the nicest people you’ll know. For whatever reason, he approached a stop sign with two people ahead of him, didn’t want to wait, went around them into an intersection and was side swiped and died that night. He died because he made such a ridiculous choice, but its still saddening, and his parents will probably spend the rest of their lives trying to make sense of his choice.

    I know I over analyze.

uni-note: I really can’t stand the Colt’s unis. I know they’re “classic”, but they really bore me

UConn wears “Connecticut” on their away blue jerseys and their white throwback jerseys, but still wear UConn on their home whites. I know that their football team and I believe their baseball team uses the “Connecticut” moniker.

Trying to get back to uniwatch talk:
Yesterdays AFC game was the perfect uniform match. The only thing that would have made it better was if the Chiefs wore black shoes. In the other game, Seattle monochromatic uni is a huge crapfest, same helmet, jersey, pants and socks. Why no return to their roots with silver pants and helmet? BTW LETS GO RAVENS (even with the ugly unis) HAPPY FESTIVUS.

Re: Williams. Some more intelligent thoughts.

So now I see that the racist card is being played by some of you.

    Typical.

Do you deny that Iverson and Anthony live/aspire/admire/indulge in the gangsta/thug lifestyle? Then how do you explain Iverson’s inciting of a brawl in that bowling alley back when he was in high school or for both players inane need of a “posse” numbering up to 40 people which happens to include at least 6 individuals with felony convictions on various charges ranging from assault and battery to weapons charges and drug possession/distribution, as well as Iverson and Anthony’s repeated bleatings about “keepin’ it real.”

Apparently “keepin’ it real” means associating with known thugs and gangstas. Just who is that supposed to impress? Why am I supposed to look up to people like that?

As for the photos of Williams open casket being somehow sacriligious, please. How come none of you were bleating and shrieking about the open casket at James Browns funeral service which was televised live by all 3 cable news networks and included repeated shots of Brown in his casket? It’s way, way too late by that point for the camera to suck out your soul if you believe that sort of bullshit.

Bottom line, Williams wasn’t an innocent by any means. He made a conscious decision to attend a party where known convicted felons would be. He could have refused to go or made up some bullshit excuse, but he didn’t and he paid the price. A good part of the blame lies with him.

You ever go to a dance in High school? Where some people were drunk? I guess that means you deserved to get hit by a drunk driver on the way home.

    Blame the victim. Idiotic.

I like how Ben responds to the outrageous attacks on him, but conviently skips the well-thought out responses (namely the one regarding the fact that the party was not promoted as involving Anthony or Inverson and the question about the USC kicker).

It’s never about “bad people” it’s all about bad judgment…being in a Hummer stretch limo with tinted windows after frequenting a dance club after losing the most important football game of this young gentleman’s career does not make him a “bad person” just a 24-year old using incredibly bad judgment.

The real tradegy in this case…he’s just a great 24-year old kid and someone in his life should have been watching over this young man imploring him to go home give some thought to the loss and how to improve his game next season, and not heading out for a night on the town. Ridiculous and sad.

    Answer: nothing.

The fact is that even though they weren’t promoted, they both showed up at the party with their assorted possee’s of thugs/convicted felons and shit went down.

As for the USC kicker, who cares? His death is in no way germane to Williams death beyond the coincidental fact that both were football players one in college, the other in the NFL.

Jesus, you can’t possibly be that stupid.

Why does everyone keep bringing up this idea that Iverson and Anthony weren’t promoted as being part of the party? What does that have to do with anything whether or not they were promoted?

It’s not like there were 10,000 people at the party. And since Anthony and Iverson both had their thug/gangsta possees with them at the party, and said possees had around 40 people in them you’d have had to be blind to miss them.

Once Williams saw them he should have left.

    End of story.

He chose to stay and get involved in a situation which escalated. It was his choice to stay and therefore he must take a good deal of the blame for his own death.

The trim on the end of their sleaves and a line down the outside of their pants. I don’t have any visuals but has this always been there? At least throughout this season? I was just conspiring that the lime green was connected to the lime green gloves of recent popularity. Anyone know the answer?
The lime green has always been there since these uniforms debuted in 2002. The eye of the logo is also lime green. The new gloves were just created to match the trim color.

I’m not sure, but I believe I read that the small amount of green was a token nod back to the original uniform and logo where green was more prominent.

i am usually a quiet observer/reader, i am not offended by seeing somenes dead body at their funeral however i do feel that it is kind of personal and akward to see on the site, i just dont think this is the place for it to be shown. i do agree with the decision to post people wearing his jersey etc etc. just chiming in.

As far as someone in my family dying and a stranger pointing at them and saying they deserved it, my mom died 4 years ago from complications related to lung cancer, and I had little if any sympathy for her as she chose to smoke for nearly 40 years, and in effect I was pointing at her and saying she deserved it. And I didn’t feel the least bit bad about doing so.
If this is really true, then there is no point in continuing this discussion. You may be the most heartless person I have ever encountered. I hope for your sake that the people in your life are more caring than you. I feel sorry for your mother, who could not even count on the support of her own son at her death.
So you consider me more heartless then Hitler and Pol Pot combined?

Zowee!!!!!!!!! *Throws confetti in the air and blows one of those stupid horn thingees you have at birthday parties*

    Give me a break.

Where precisely did I say that i didn’t support my mother? Give me the exact quote. i was at my mothers side when she died.

Allen Iverson was convicted of a felony in HIGH SCHOOL. Can no one ever change? Our president seems to have gotten off the hook. The Answer became quite the spokeperson against violence and paid for the funeral of a young man who was gunned down in his jersey and said that he would give out 100 jerseys a day if it would save one life, but he is really thug. Grow up and quit being so close minded and racist. Darrent was a good person and was not even out that late for New Years. No one deserves to die or get shot.

Here is the quote you wanted. Telling your mother that she deserved to die does not fit any definition of support I have ever known.

I never said anything about Hitler or Pol Pot. If you notice, I was comparing you to people I have encountered in my life. I have never had any interaction with either of those two.
