The other day I got an e-mail from Matt Kowalski. The subject line read, “The only sport where the winner gets the loser’s uniform”¦” When I opened the e-mail, the sentence was completed: “is rowing.”
The rest of the e-mail read like so:
“Shirt racing” is the way things are done at all major college rowing championships. If you win the regatta, then you get ALL THE JERSEYS/HENLEYS/UNIFORMS of the other crews you beat. If a rower is lucky enough, he can get on a run — the U of Wisconsin recently had a class (’03, maybe?) that won four consecutive Eastern Sprints titles; the few kids in those boats wound up with lots of Harvard/Yale/Princeton gear. I think there’s a legend of some guys from Penn in the early or mid-’90s that came away with 150+ shirts over four years, between Eastern Sprints, IRAs (Intercollegiate Rowing Association), and dual races.
I rowed at a small club school (Pitt) and also spent a season on the Wisconsin crew after transferring. After every race at Pitt, I had to give up my shirt. At Wisconsin, however, I had the satisfying feeling of watching a Purdue rower dump a huge laundry pile of Purdue jerseys right in front of out trailer after all our boats spanked them at the Big 10 regatta.
Then there’s the story of Yale’s silk sash. At one point in the ’70s, their crew was so slow, and giving away so many of their jerseys with the real silk stripe, that they had to switch to screening the stripe onto the jersey, just to save money.
Shirt racing, incidentally, is one of the reasons why men’s rowing is NOT an NCAA sport. Betting by NCAA student-athletes is outlawed, and shirt racing is essentially a bet. But under the IRA (which is 12 years older than the NCAA, by the way), it’s no problem.
There’s no professional rowing (anymore). No money to be made in
the sport. Yet Wall Street types from Ivy League schools put off big-$$$ careers to live like hobos trying to make national teams. Shirt racing encapsulates this spirit of the sport. In dual races between 8s, they actually pull the 63-ft. shells together at the finish line and give over the shirts right thereon the water. International rowing doesn’t really have shirt racing, but there’s a long tradition of trading gear at the end of a World Cup-level regatta. When the East German crews were winning in the ’70s, one of their henley jerseys could command barter of a lot of Western-issued sweats/warm-ups/gear.
Interesting protocol, although it raises as many questions as it answers, at least for me. Here’s the ensuing back-and-forth I had with Kowalski:
Uni Watch: Do the winners wear the losers’ jerseys, or do they all go into a trophy case, or what?
Matt Kowalski: They don’t usually get displayed or anything, other then being worn at practice or other regattas as a symbol of speed. I lost the few that I won at Wisconsin. I think a lot of successful rowers just throw theirs in a drawer. It’s not a sport with a lot of glamour.
UW: I assume women’s rowing teams don’t do the uni-trade thing, right? And this is why women’s rowing is an NCAA sport?
MK: Women’s rowing is a NCAA sport because of Title IX. It’s the logical choice when you need to add 50-70 female students to balance football, and has grown by about tenfold since the 1990s. The women tend to wear unisuits, so there’s not as much trading.
UW: What does a typical crew jersey look like, anyway? Is there any standard template or style for what it’s is “supposed” to look like (tailoring, colors, home-vs.-road ettiquette, etc.), or is it just a freestyle kind of thing? Is there an acknowledged “classic,” like Yankee pinstripes or something like that?
MK: For years the rowing world went with the Oxford/Cambridge standard design, which was basically a “ringer” T-shirt with a few buttons at the collar. The diagonal stripe and the school letter are common, too. Remember, rowing is generally a conservative sport, and it’s horrible for spectators, so unis have never been a huge deal (outside of your shirt being taken by a faster crew). That said, with the increase in rowing apparel companies in the past few years, there’s a lot of radical designs making their way to the water. Princeton’s women wore tiger stripe unisuits last spring for a few races, and the German national team’s sponsorship by Deutsche Telecom led to some outrageous pink unis.
There’s no home vs. road. There are seasonal uni differences, fall vs, spring. Shirt racing usually takes place in the spring. In the fall, the races are 4000-6000 meters. Because of the longer time spent on the water (I’ve had races where I was out there for three hours with delays), the gear is long tights and long-sleve tech shirts made of Coolmax.
Another rowing uni phnomenon is the Stevenson. These are pullover jackets cut short in the front and very long in the back. The long flap in the back provides extra padding and waterproofing when tucked into the trou (for some reason, what everybody else calls “compresion shorts,” rowers call “trou”). Stevensons also have shoulder gussets to allow for the arms to reach out when placing the oar in the water. Stevenson is a company that became identified with the jackets, like Kleenex for tissues. Most of the nice ones today are made by Boathouse Sports.
J & L was the first company to do nothing but rowing gear, and they do all kinds of custom embroidery and color schemes for crews; most varsity programs have a new design each year. Clubs are on a tighter budget, and for fall races a trip to the discount store for wacky gear is common (different boats will wear different shirts). The Head of the Charles in Boston is the unoffical world rowing convention every year, and a lot of club crews make up specific gear/hats/glasses/headbands just for that race.
UW: What about logo-emblazoned oar blades?
MK: Yeah, I guess that could be considered part of the uniform. Most big regattas will have a T-shirt for sale showing all the blades of the different schools. They’re pretty cool. Down by the docks where crews lay their blades before they get in the boat, you can often find pile after pile of oars next to each other, and it makes a kind of rowing rainbow.
”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“”“
Wow — big thanks to Matt for that crash course in rowing aesthetics. Here he is at Head of the Charles in 1999. “I liked wearing orange over my tech shirt,” he says, “because I was a big fan of the Dutch rowers at the time.”
And just to put a characteristic Uni Watch spin on this, it will come as no surprise to any of you that I managed to turn up this photo.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Good story here (and additional details here) about a Sikh kid in Pennsylvania who successfully challenged a ruling that he couldn’t wear his patka while playing soccer (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Reprinted from yesterday’s Comments section: Amazing polka-dot socks on the Collins Hill High girls’ hoops team in Georgia. ”¦ Todd Davis reports, “Iverson was just on local TV complaining that the Nuggets don’t have any colored or striped socks going on. ‘We’ll fix that,’ he said.” ”¦ A few gazillion people wrote in to inform me that Cal’s Marshawn Lynch didn’t have a nameplate on his jersey in last night’s Holiday Bowl. I’m not sure which is more depressing: the lack of quality control or the fact that so many people were actually watching the Holiday Bowl.
Long Weekend Schedule: We’ll have an open thread tomorrow, a short entry on Sunday, another open thread on Monday, and then back to regular content on Tuesday. OK? OK.
They also trade shirts in soccer. The higher the level the more often they get traded. In the world cup shirts get traded after every match but it is the players choice.
It isn’t required by any rules, except for maybe “unspoken” ones, but soccer players often trade jerseys after a match, especially internationally. Of course, in this way, even the loser goes home with a shirt. My roommate and his college soccer team took a training trip over the summer to Europe to play some junior teams of big clubs and came back with some awesome jerseys.
Interesting read about the crew teams – when I went to High School, crew was for the elitists and the rich kids, and the assistant principal basically fawned all over the crew team (his daughter was a rower, and they were elitists too). As such, I basically paid no attention to them other than to roll my eyes when they would “walk on water” down the hallways. To think they actually had unis and not just t-shirts and bathing suits – I guess I never thought about it much.
True (on the soccer shirts) — in fact for the World Cup, Umbro had every shirt they made labelled with the *opponents* name and the date of the match, so when the shirts were traded (and sold on eBay, is my guess), they could be verified authentic as to not only who wore them but in what match.
You can kind of make it out under Beckham’s link, and here’s a huge pic where you can almost make out that it says “link” under the number.
link. Sorry for all the Beckham shots, not surprisingly those are the ones you can find the most of. Since the rest of the side was shite and all.
I guess my only exposure to rowing were two bad 80’s movies link and link. Can’t recall whether there was any shirt exchanging going on in either.
Cool uniforms and oars, though.
Difference between soccer and crew being in crew there’s no exchange. If you lose the race, you lose your jersey.
That would have been a big problem for my high school basketball team, which in 1992 was I think still wearing the same unis in which the 1984 team had won a state championship. We would have had to have a bake sale or something if we stood a 50/50 shot (or worse) of losing our shirts every night.
Also, could Lynch’s lack of a nameplate really be a quality control issue? Doesn’t there have to be a story there? It’s not like he’s some kind of special-teams-only, walk-on, practice dummy kind of guy. He’s, like, a good player and stuff.
I think those “polka-dot socks” are actually little basketballs
Great article, but one factual error. Men’s rowing could be an NCAA sport and keep the jersey swap. From the NCAA’s database:
1. Long-Standing Tradition: (I) The provisions of NCAA Bylaw 10.3 are not applicable to a long-standing demonstrated tradition in a particular sport in which student-athletes from involved institutions exchange a tangible item (e.g., exchanging of shirts in the sport of rowing [emphasis mine]) contingent on the outcome of a competition, provided such activity is approved by the involved institutions. [References: 10.3 (gambling activities) and NCAA Interpretations Committee 11/26/96, Item No. 1)]

When will there be a “I don’t give a shit Bowl presented by Nike”? ESPN will most likely pick up the rights to that game, hell, it’s football, right?
link
Great catch and research Joe – I would have never even thought that.
One other uni-related crew fact that I am surprised was not mentioned: Crew gave rise to the first “uniforms” worn in intercollegiate competition in the US.
From the Harvard athletic department website: “June 19, 1858-Red Bandanas
Harvard distinguishes itself from its competition when Charles W. Eliot ’53 purchases six red Chinese silk bandanas for his crew members to wear for that day’s regatta. It is believed to be the first time a sports team features an identifying mark. Eliot later serves as Harvard’s President from 1869 until 1909.”
So crew in general (and Harvard crew in particular) is the genesis of much of what gets discussed on this site.
One further note.
This is, of course, where the Harvard “Crimson” nickname originates.
In later races, Yale took to wearing blue bandanas. [Always second best.]
Of course, we all know what color you get when you mix red and blue . . . .
Did anyone else notice that Texas A&M running back Jorvorskie Lane had an second decal on his helmet bumper last night. The second sticker was applied crooked so the original bumper plate was partically noticable. I couldn’t find a photo of it. Did anyone else catch this?

I think the problem is that there is not a jersey exchange, but rather the losers give up their jerseys, in effect, making it a bet.

Last Harvard uni-related item of the day (I promise). Also from the Harvard athletics website: “June 4, 1875-Sharp-Dressed Men
Harvard plays its first intercollegiate football game, hosting Tufts at Jarvis Field. Just as historic is that Harvard is outfitted in formal uniforms, believed to be the first time a team has been so identified. The squad is adorned in the newly-chosen school colors, with a uniform of white shirts and pants, with crimson trimming and crimson hose.”
Anyone have any idea link you might be able to find more rowing pics?
I’m not sure if there are enough watermarks on the pic.
It is safe to say that this link is much worse than any of the Antonio Bryant pics.
The thing about non-NCAA sports not counting in the title IX stats strikes me as very odd. If it is true, I wonder if there has been any discussion among the football powers to devise a football-only shadow NCAA? Two “benefits” (from the ADs’ points of view) that immediately come to mind are removal of 100+ male varsity athletes from the Title IX books and the ability to write your own recruiting / player benefits rules. Very interesting.
OUC: former rowers, apparently link. Looks like Temple, ??, ??, Penn, Dartmouth, Cal, ??, Columbia, Cornell.
NCAA reg:

Sully:

I think the “contingent on the outcome” language is the NCAA’s genteel way of describing a bet, so it would indeed be OK.
I’m not sure which is more depressing: the lack of quality control or the fact that so many people were actually watching the Holiday Bowl.
I am a little offended by this. Aggie fans were excited to watch A&M play in a bowl game no matter which one it was, c’mon we have kinda sucked since Fran took over.
Related to Marshawn Lynch’s nameplate missing, maybe he had to where one of LB Desmond Bishop’s jerseys since they share the same number.
And as an unrelated side note: During the halftime show, a graphic with Marshawn Lynch’s stats had his named spelled Linch. ESPN should know better.
To #17: Not surprisingly, Cashley is riding on someone’s back…
There are a few of us who will tune in to watch the Aggies play even when they are getting their asses handed to them. They were certainly the best looking team on the field.
The rowing info is cool. I can definitely see why the women wouldn’t trade the unitards. That would be sort of like wearing another chick’s bathing suit. Ewwwwwww!

That’s because it is odd. Title IX focuses on varsity sports. Wisconsin treats men’s rowing as varsity, Michigan as “club varsity,” whatever that is, and Virginia as club. Each school then treats men’s rowing differently for purposes of Title IX. Wisconsin counts it, Virginia doesn’t, and I can’t find Michigan’s EADA form to see what they do.

Hey it’s not about Young. It’s the whole team. The linemen like the navy monochromatic look for slimming effect. Other players wanted to try the light blue pants. The coach (who is extremely popular with his squad) listened to his players’ suggestions for different combos and let them have fun. No surprise that the team is playing well when there is such good rapport. It shows players do care about how they look and it helps when a coach gives them some input from game to game.

Seth you failed to recognize in your over glorification of your ivy league school the very interesting story of Harvard and Fordham and how their school colors came to be.
Magenta was used on the uniforms of Fordham’s “base-ball nines.” Magenta was also used by Fordham’s archrival, Harvard.
Both institutions claimed prior right to use of magenta, and neither institution was willing to make concessions. Since it was “improper” for two schools to be wearing the same colors, the matter was to be settled by a series of baseball games. The winning team could lay claim to magenta. The losing team would have to find another color.
Fordham won, but Harvard reneged on its promise.
Ironic footnote: After Harvard kept magenta as its school color, Fordham adopted Maroon and shortly thereafter Harvard adopted Crimson.
You don’t have to go to Harvard to quote websites
Check out link of Ryan Howard. Do his Adidas stripes extend beyond the sole of his cleats, or is there a horizontal red stripe there for some reason?

From an Auburn message board site:
our guys will be wearing specially designed orange and blue under armor cleats in the cotton bowl.
I haven’t seen a picture of them, so I don’t know how “orange and blue” they will be…but it will be different from the usual black cleats.
Has anybody else heard anything about this?

Also announced that the Ravens will be wearing all black on sunday.
I rowed back in the 70s for Rollins College. We gave and got shirts several times. The Rollins rowing shirt had a horizontal stripe all the way around the shirt, difficult to do at that time since the stripe was dyed into the shirt before the shirt was put together. A cool shirt, and I still have one.
Anyway, one of the boats had a female coxwain. She got a little nervous about the whole shirt thing, but solved it by wearing a tank top underneath her rowing shirt.

I think the main problem with the Titans unis is the different colored shoulders, it looks horrible. If they took that off and made the jerseys one solid color, the uniforms would be more than descent and would actually look good.

I can’t relate to anyone who is so anti-black that he would not want the Ravens wearing black.
Don’t like the Lions’ blacks? Fine.
Ravens blacks look cool to me and should remain in the circuit.
I rowed at Ohio State in the mid 90’s. When we were at the Head of the Charles in ’95 (I think) the national team showed up with swooshes on their blades (at least for the warm-up sessions, can’t remember if they used them in the actual race). If I remember right, it was because Nike was trying to lock up as many of the olympic sports as it could before the Atlanta games, and had just inked a deal with USRowing.
Around the same time, OSU’s women became a varsity program. Since OSU is a Nike school, they had to switch from JL unis to Nike unis, but the Nike ones were so bad that they went back to JL, and just had swooshes embroidered over the JL logos.

I doubt many people are anti-black. Most are anti-ALL black. You know, even the black shirt and black pants would be more tolerable if they weren’t wearing black socks and really really low whites. Paul has dubbed it the leotard effect.
As far as an alternate, I’d suggest black shirts with the standard pants, as the Eagles do. They still look like the Eagles when they do that; the Ravens in their bodystockings look like the villain team from a bad high school football movie.

I’m not an Nike-hater and don’t want this to become personal, but I have an honest question regarding your pride in the swoosh on your truck. Since you took the time to post a picture of it here, I hope you humor me with an explanation.
What would motivate you to place the corporate logo of a company that has nothing to do with, or is in any way related to a truck, on a truck? I understand if you’ve got a Flowmaster, Edelbrock, or Hooker Header sticker, assuming those parts are in your car. While its still corporate whoring, it kind of makes sense.
But why the swoosh? Do you work for Nike? Has Nike somehow done something to positively affect your life? In short, why are you essentially sacrificing space on your personal vehicle- space that you own, to pimp a corporate entity that is not related to the item and has done nothing for you except overcharge for shoes?

I doubt many people are anti-black. Most are anti-ALL black. You know, even the black shirt and black pants would be more tolerable if they weren’t wearing black socks and really really low whites. Paul has dubbed it the leotard effect.
As far as an alternate, I’d suggest black shirts with the standard pants, as the Eagles do. They still look like the Eagles when they do that; the Ravens in their bodystockings look like the villain team from a bad high school football movie.
All black, all the time. The Ravens (and the Panthers) should have all-black alternates, not just because I love all-black, but because it makes sense. Well, ok, mostly it’s for my benefit.

I think there will be support for a team there, they love there sports in that area. Nothin like some southern fried whatever tailgating before a Kansas City ?Scouts? game.

Why do people place Oakley stickers, or Roxy stickers on their vehicles? I put the sticker on the truck because to me it is aesthetically pleasing. I choose to wear only Nike products. I feel it is a good brand, and I have always chosen to purchase Nike shoes, and athletic wear. I do not feel that I am in anyway “whoring†myself to a corporation. In order to do that I would have to be getting something in return, which I most certainly am not. I personally think the Nike Swoosh® is one of the classiest, most simple forms of corporate identity, and that is why I chose to put the sticker on my vehicle.
those tiger stripes are pretty hideous…but even worse is the fact that two of the ladies have vertical stripes and two have horizontal stripes…and if they are going to wear a ‘uniform’ could they at least agree on the same color hat or even the same style? The whole thing just looks really sloppy.

A friend of mine has a wall in his garage full of rowing jerseys from his days at U-Dub.
I’m thoroughly enjoying the fact that all the bowl patches are covering Nike’s stupid-azz piping along the collar. Maybe the fact that this looks idiotic will convince the Swooshers to change. (probably not.)

Actually they are uniform- look closely, vertical stripes for right(starboard) side oars, horizontal for left(port) side oars.
Open question for discussion: Who do you all think has the best unis in college basketball right now? Indiana and UCLA are obvious choices with their old-school traditional look, but what new uniforms are the best?
Washington State University crew (2003-2004)
Everett Community College crew (2002-2003)
Represent! At Everett, we were one of only two West Coast community colleges with a crew but left Orange Coast as the one and only after the sport was canceled following my sophomore year.
I noticed someone said “crew team.” That’s a big no-no. Crew means team. So you can have a rowing team or a crew but not a “crew team.”
My understanding is that rugby teams exchange jerseys in a similar fashion to crew teams. I know at school (Amherst) I often see rugby players wearing Wesleyan and Williams jerseys that they have won. Perhaps it’s just a Little Three thing?
On a completely different note about the Holiday Bowl, did anyone see the Cal OLB with “GOOGLE ME” written on his eye black stickers? I remembered that discussion from a while back, thought this was pretty clever. I have pictures, but I don’t know how to post them…

I know that college football teams exchange team apparel before games/over the weekend. Atleast in the Big 12. Some of my good friends at Iowa State are on the football team and came to class on Mondays with Swoosh-ified pullover jackets, hooded sweatshirts, sweatpants, watches, etc. I believe they usually gave away long-sleeve tees and sweatshirts. Not the same as the rowing thing, but close.

I happen to like Maryland’s uniforms. They look really nice on my HD TV. Plus it’s cool they are outfitted by Under Armour. Very different looking. I like that.
I also like the fact that Maryland decided to put their patches on their upper shoulders. Rather than try to cover up their normal chest logos and such.

My only advice would be that if the uniform is a patterned jersey, you may have to contact the school or look for blank jerseys online. Once that’s done, you’d have to provide a company with pictures of everything: logo, nameplate font, and any patches the team may wear. It might cost you an arm and a leg if you go full embroidery for a logo. They base the cost on colours and size of the logo.
The one place that I know does custom uniforms is link. I know because I used to work there.
The only exception to the NCAA gambling rules is for “long-standing traditions.” The NCAA has specifically stated that rowing’s shirt-betting fits this exception. Most people–in fact, most university compliance officers–are not aware of the exception, but it exists and permits shirt-betting in women’s rowing. As a former college rower (and a current NCAA compliance officer for a Divison I university), I have to point out that we ladies are very proud of the betting shirts that we have earned–just like the guys are!
Does this tradition of rowing’s make anyone else think of heraldry and coats-of-arms? Take a look at the link. All the little coats included in the large shields represent areas that were controlled by the empire. In other words, if we defeat you, we get the representation of your team. I wonder if this is connected to rowing’s tradition. Considering rowing’s status as a upper-class, British, noble sport, I would not be surprised. Any rowing experts know?
