New ESPN column today. I’ll add the link when it goes live. [Update: No ESPN column today after all. It’ll run next week.]
Meanwhile: As I noted at the end of yesterday’s Uni Watch News Ticker, the Chiefs will presumably wear some sort of memorial tribute this weekend for team founder Lamar Hunt, who died on Wednesday. But Hunt’s passing has already provided some valuable uni-watchery, thanks to a memorial photo gallery that’s been posted on the Chiefs’ web site (first brought to my attention yesterday by reader Jacob Reed). Many of the pics feature great little uni-related details I’d never seen before. Check it out:
• We’ve all seen Hank Stram wearing this Chiefs logo blazer. But I’d never seen him wearing one with the team name spelled out.
• Even better: Dig the amazing team-branded blazers worn by Hunt and Bud Adams in this 1962 shot, back when the Chiefs were still the Dallas Texans. Looks like Adams might also be wearing an Oilers tie tack.
• Speaking of the Texans, dig this shot of Hunt and his young son, the latter wearing a Texans T-shirt. Love to know what Goodwill outlet that eventually got donated to.
• Here’s something you don’t see anymore: a postgame celebration with one of the players (Sherrill Headrick, in this case) smoking a cigarette.
• Here’s Hunt presenting the NFL Man of the Year Award to Derrick Thomas in 1993. The uni detail that fascinates me here is the trophy itself: Like, when’s the last time you saw an NFL player wearing a poncho? Or maybe it’s supposed to be a superhero’s cape?
• How many NFL teams have uni-numbered ski caps?
• Check out Chiefs prexy Carl Peterson in this shot: He’s got the “58” button (a memorial for Derrick Thomas), the red-white-blue Chiefs ribbon (not sure what that’s for — the photo isn’t dated, but Thomas died in 2000, so the ribbon probably isn’t 9/11-related), and it looks like there’s a number on his tie (no idea).
• And in an age when Reebok dresses the coaches wear those ridiculous polo shirt designs, the elemental simplicity of this is quite refreshing.
‘Husker History: Reader Jonathon Binet has turned up a sensational little video chronicling the history of Nebraska’s football helmets. Check it out below:
Helmet Raffle Update: Speaking of helmets, I got a note yesterday from Pete Ellingsworth, winner of our Gridiron Memories helmet raffle. He says he’s taking the 1976-72 Indiana helmet — “I love the simple ‘I’ and stripes on the crimson
helmet,” he writes. “Plus I’m from Indiana (never mind the fact that I now reside in Burbank, California). I just wish IU would stop wearing those red on red unis!” Gotta love a contest winner who works a uni critique into his victory speech. Congrats, Pete!
No mas? No, mas!: My recent profile of No Mas led to a Wednesday-night sit-down between myself and No Mas principals I-berg and Large. Fueled by a pu pu platter and ample servings of chicken chop suey and “Richard Yee’s Style Chow Clams” (better than it looks), we discussed several weighty matters, including the possibility of creating a line of No Mas/Uni Watch co-branded T-shirts. Stay tuned.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Speaking of NFL coaches’ polos, check out the swash-“S” at the end of the insignia on Vince Lombardi’s shirt (with thanks to Robert Erdtmann). … An Orioles prole has been caught stealing team items, including jerseys and jackets, and selling them on eBay (as spotted on the police blotter by Matt French). ”¦ Turns out Daisuke Matsuzaka was fated to join the Red Sox all along — check out the stirrups he wore in high school (good catch by Richard Stover). ”¦ Remember Joe Pavelski’s upside-down Reebok logo, which first showed up about two weeks ago? Pavelski’s childhood friend and Uni Watch reader John Okray asked him about it on Wednesday. “He didn’t even realize it,” Okray reports. “He said, ‘I heard something about that. I forgot to look for it last night before I put my jersey on. I hadn’t noticed until somebody said something to me about it.’ Is it possible players aren’t as obsessed with their jerseys as we are? [There’s a stunner. — PL] The Sharks don’t have another road game until December 30th, so maybe the problem will be fixed by then.” ”¦ Okray also notes that Dwyane Wade, who was inexplicably wearing that Nike-branded Heat jersey on the cover of SI a week or two ago, now has three stripes shaved into his head. A mea culpa to Adidas, perhaps? ”¦ Good note from Chuck Miller, who writes: “Butte, Montana, is the hometown of motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel. The city’s new CBA basketball franchise is not only named the Daredevils, but their uniforms are an interpretation of Knievel’s famous ‘Commander Jumpsuit’ motorcycle leathers.” All this was presumably done with Evel’s blessing, given his litigious nature. … A few days ago I linked to this photo of the 1905 Cherokee Male Seminary football team. I mentioned the noseguards that most of the players have hanging from their necks, but Michael Ferry has noticed something I missed regarding a few of the players seated in the middle row: “I was wondering if those are ‘helmets’ on the knee and arms, respectively, of those on the far right and left.” Looks like it, but those would definitely be the flimsiest helmets I’ve ever seen, so I asked Helmet Hut prexy Curtis Worrell, who said they’re definitely helmets. “Look at this,” he wrote back. “The helmet top far right has the same openings.” … The Marlins will have a sleeve patch next season celebrating the 10th anniversary of their 1997 championship. … Man, one lousy signature on a contract and suddenly you’ve got two Boston jerseys in one day. … Matt Corica notes that Seahawks’ “neon-snot sleeve stripe” was missing Deion Branch’s jersey last night, and from Nate Burleson’s too. … Looks like Mike Nolan went from wearing a suit to joining the janitorial staff.
woo hoo! i’m up early enough for #1!
Always liked those Redskins’ uniforms as seen in that Lombardi/Jurgensen SI cover shot.
Regarding the recent discussions of Native American names, it’s interesting to note that the SI cover has the headline “The Scalping Party Begins”. Could anyone get away with that now?
Nolan was probably dressing for the weather outside in Seattle, as there was flooding in the stadium from the rain that went through early in the game.
Big props to Pete Ellingsworth for winning the helmet thing, and even bigger props for choosing the helmet I would’ve taken had I won. I love IU’s old school two-stripe design, and I was so happy when they wore it last year vs. Purdue.
Yes but those retro Indiana helmets left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth when they decided to go with the red facemask instead of the traditional grey.
Why in the world does the Marlins commemorative patch have so much orange in it? Not exactly a complementary accent to teal.
Always liked those Redskins’ uniforms as seen in that Lombardi/Jurgensen SI cover shot.
Agreed. I have never liked the red pants, and wish that they would be abandoned forever.
Love the idea of the Evel Knievel salute built into the CBA uniforms. Every kid my age worshiped him back in the early 1970s.
Another Chelsea High School uni update, because I can:
The basketball team got link this year. Here’s link. Those are the home whites; I haven’t yet seen the away blues (well, I assume they’re blue).
Here’s a question: in the first one, an S is visible on the shorts. I assume that’s a manufacturer’s logo, but I don’t recognize it. Whose is it?
Also, Chelsea’s very talented big man graduated, and they didn’t have a lot of size to replace him, so they’ve turned into a small, fast team. With that in mind, they’ve adopted a Top Gun-inspired theme this year (with the slogan “The need for speed”), including a Top Gun-inspired Chelsea Basketball logo on the warmups (I’ll get a shot of that tonight). Because of that theme, in an amusing development, the student section has taken to link.
I keep hoping to see the players wearing aviators during warmups or something.

At the risk of sounding like a Scrooge, can we please give this kind of thing a rest? It’s embarrassing for all concerned.
“The uni detail that fascinates me here is the trophy itself: Like, when’s the last time you saw an NFL player wearing a poncho?”
Players wear these “ponchos” all of the time in cold weather games. I saw many players wearing them during last Thursday night’s Steelers-Browns game. Sorry no pics.

Scrooge,
Did you see link article in the Chicago Sun-Times about game worn jerseys for Christmas presents?
My favorite quote was from an unnamed Chicago Bears player who quipped, ”So that’s why I’ve got a new uniform almost every game,” one player said when told his stuff was being sold.

kinda weird to include it on a trophy though…
D. Wade is in no way honoring adidas with that three-stripe wave in his hair; that is a common hair style for many players. He is sponsored by Converse, a subsidary of Nike, so that is in no way true.

Here are some link of link wearing the ponchos.
Notice the lack of sleeves.
Are those Seahawks really missing the neon snot-green stripes, or are those stripes rolled up under the pads? It would seem that’s the case for the second picture (and he’s wearing a short sleeve BA stlye undershirt that give the illusion of no snot-green stripes.)

Forget the poncho – how about Derrick Thomas’ sweet threads? Red blazer AND a flat gold chain over the shirt? Man, makes me want to watch some Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or something.
Was Deion Branch’s apparent rebellion against team uniformities the reason for his killing my fantasy team last night? I say yes.

Beat me to it, I saw that immediately
link?
Re: the Seahawks jerseys, I don’t think the stripes are missing. If you compare sleeve lengths on Branch’s jersey with Hasselbeck’s, you can see that Branch’s sleeve ends just below the two logos, while Hasselbeck’s is much longer, and the material seems bunched up. It looks like Branch rolled the insides of his sleeves up.
Burleson, similar detail: he’s wearing two sleeves. One ends just under the Hawk logo, and is rolled up; the other is from an undershirt. The two sleeves are slightly different colors, and as you look to the front of Burleson’s jersey, you can see the difference a little bit more clearly. Again, it looks like he tucked that part of his sleeve up; it would stay, since looking at most players’ sleeves, the snot strip is elastic.

On Monday, we saw a shot of Warrick Dunn with some belt flappage. In the shot posted Friday of Mike Nolan not wearing a suit, you see Hannibal Navies’ belt hanging completely lose.

This reminds me- is there any way there could be some kind of list to determine the best and worst looking professional sports cities in North America? All major sports franchises would be included and averaged into the city’s grade. For example, Detroit may get high marks for the Tigers and Red Wings, but may be brought down by the Lions and their black unis.
This may be fairly time consuming, but I think it would be interesting stuff.
Anybody know why the one volleyball player wears the different colored link?

I think it is more that Gore’s jersey is untucked and his tag is sticking out. Plus both of his socks are rolled down.
Anybody know why the one volleyball player wears the different colored link?
That player is called the “libero,” which means “free” in Italian. The libero is essentially a defensive specialist and has certain limitations depending on the level of play (NCAA or international). The jersey is used because the libero can switch for any backrow player without counting against the sub limitations and need not notify the ref.
Anybody know why the one volleyball player wears the different colored link?
That player is the “libero”… a special position that remains on the “back line” throughout the game, regardless of the regular rotation. (“Libero” means “free” in some language with which I’m not familiar.)
Thanks for checking on the helmets in the Cherokee Seminary photo. Calling them flimsy might be a little generous.

The funny thing about Hunt’s son wearing that Texans T-shirt… the fact that he’s in the Chiefs’ locker room! Look on the floor behind his dad, you can see a helmet with the arrowheads on the side, not a Texans helmet.
Looks like the poor kid didn’t get a new T-shirt during the team move… either that or he was the first kid to think that retro T-shirts were cool.

My apologies if someone already brought this up-
link Not a uni-related article, per se, until you reach the last entry, where it states that in 2003 the Denver Broncos reached the finals against Michigan in a poll for the best unifoms in sports. Again this was 2003, so I’m assuming this was refering to the latest version of the Broncos unis (although there may have been throwback categories?). If it is the current unis in question, how could you not suspect voter fraud!?!
It kills me when teams make drastic uniform changes to go from a great classic look to something that could only have been generated by faulty market research and overthinking (Broncos, Bills, Bengals, etc.) Someone definately needs to step back and say, “wait a minute, are these good, or stupid?”
Re the ‘Hawks “neon snot stripe,” I’m probably in the minority, but it’s the only redeeming element in Seattle’s dull & boring look. Ordinarily I’d be against neon green anything, but here it’s a spark of life on an otherwise depressing color palette.
And as for numbered ski caps, I reported John Stocco of the Badgers wearing one here on the boards a little while back. Don’t remember which game — Iowa? — he was on the sidelines injured that week.
I think it was announced that Nolan and Del Rio were only allowed to wear their suits twice this season. Probably why he’s wearing the windbreaker and windpants, although the weather likely had something to do with it too.
The story is buried in here somewhere

Today’s headline was how I always remembered Lamar Hunt. I could not believe on a late afternoon flight from Columbus, OH to Dallas, TX in July 1998 sitting in our row was Mr. Hunt – in coach. One of the wealthiest men in the world flying coach. He was engaging and polite during the flight, and genuinely interested in my business, along with sharing his business that day in Columbus for the soccer team – the Crew.
For every photo I find of Browns players wearing the sideline poncho/overcoat, I cannot find one that shows the backside. Interestingly, when the Browns use the exact same design they’ve had on them from at least the 1960s with the Brownie on the back with the arched “Browns†above him.
Can anyone help?
It is funny that this topic got brought up today. I just finished a short piece on “Brownie the Elf” for Paul today that was inspired by the appearance of the elf on the back of the sideline parkas of the Browns this year.
The piece should be up sometime soon. Stay tuned.

Thanks Vince.
The Brownie Elf must have fallen out of favor with the resurgence of the new Browns in 1999, as it was probably overlooked by the corporate capitalization of the “Dawg Pound” name. Half of all merchandise in the late 90s, early 2000s had the link Dawg Pound link.
Now, good luck finding either Dawg Pound logo on any merchandise other than the clearance rack. You’ll also note that a lot more Browns merchandise now includes Brownie, which I like.
One of my favorite characterizations of the Brownie is used on a link. Feel free to send it my way if anyone has the $400+ laying around.
Jeff Bagwell retired officially today. I would have loved to see him get to 500 HR’s, but his shoulder just wouldn’t allow him to play anymore. Anyway, I was thinking about it and as great as Bagwell is (and he’s a really nice guy, he came and signed autographs at my elementary school when he was in his rookie season…I was in second grade at the time), he may be one of the originators of the pajama pants look in baseball.
link
In Bagwell’s case though, he probably started wearing the looser fitting pants due to his unusual, crouching batting stance: link
In the course of looking for a picture of Jeff Bagwell, I turned up this photo Astros pitcher (and later manager) Larry Dierker. Check out the stirrups he’s sporting.
With some apologies to Boston… Chicago, hands down has the best jerseys, let alone the best teams.
I don’t know, I think Chicago gets a few points docked due to the Bears sporting the all navy blue look a couple times over the past three or four years. And the Cubs get points off for overusing the ridiculous blue jersey (which admittedly is Zambrano’s doing, apparently he’s allergic to pin stripes).
Really, if you’re going to dock points for the Bears’ occasional monochromatic lapse or the Lions’ alternate jerseys, then you’re going to have to dock more points for the Pats’ year-round football unis. The comparison to the old just makes the error more egregious.
So I don’t think Bostom is such a clear winner.

I forgot to close a tag earlier, but then I wasn’t the one who opened in the first place…anyway, I’m not declaring Boston the winner, I’m just saying that Chicago does not have as sterling uniform credentials as was being claimed.
I remember those cold weather parkas being broken out all the time when I went to the Browns games in the early 80’s. They were brown with “Browns” in block lettering on the back. Municiple stadium, being right next to the lake was a cold, cold place (I remember freezing my butt off during an Indians game in July – that wind was brutal).
Speaking of the Browns… Now I think their Unis are about as good as it gets. I loved the tweaks with the reverting back to the gray masks and the sholder stripes going back to just white and orange.
But why does it seem like uni modification is always two steps forward and then two steps back? I loathe that they got rid of the stripes on the socks, and with they’d do awaay with the comemorative patches (the AL patch on the sleeve and the huge 60 year patch on the front).
If they could remove the patches, bring back the sock stripes from last year, and move the TV numbers off the shoulders and onto the helmets (or just get rid of them completely), it’d be uni nirvana.

Random Browns thoughts…
As far as the Browns go, it seemed like when they first started, Policy and crew wanted to establish their own identity and separate themselves from the past. It took many, many years into Browns 2.0 for them to openly embrace the past, and has just been happening in recent, post-Policy years.
A few marks they retired, was this:
link
and replaced it with this:
link
I thought Brownie more fell out of favor in the Modell years, and didnt get much face time in Browns 2.0 until the past few years.
I own, and they used sell a poster/print of the “last game at the stadium” that used this picture, of the old brown overcoat…

They both suck! The 9’ers current logo has too many ovals, the red is too burgundy and the drop shadow unnecessary! They need to go back to the 80’s versions…which I have heard rumors that Mike Nolan is trying to do!
I’ll grant that Denver’s not the best uni city, but it’s way better than (at a minimum): Miami, Atlanta, Phoenix, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Jacksonvillage . . . .
Chicago’s probably best-dressed for a city with all four major pro sports (the link, link, link and link all at or near the top of their respective leagues).
In my book, DC comes out worst for cities that have MLB, NFL, NHL and MLS, but they’re not very close to the bottom in either NFL or MLS.
Miami and Atlanta have a tough battle for worst-dressed city if you skip MLS. The Braves, other than the red jersey, have looked good for 20 years, but link. The Thrashers and (hockey) Panthers both look teams from a bad made-for-TV movie. The link. The Marlins kept the teal mistake going. I think Miami gets the nod.
Orange County should get a most-improved award for the Ducks recent change and the Angels’ replacement of link with link

Agreed that the Bull have some very decent uniforms. But you can’t forgive them for link or link(you can barely see them in that picture, but those are red pinstripes, awful). Plus, those Fire jersey’s are ugly. If you are going to count those in the nice category then don’t forget to add the link. Much better than those Fire jerseys and you gotta dig the two toned socks. Plus, I kind of hate those White Sox link unis. And, last but not least, I don’t know how you can forgive the city of Chicago for link scene. That’s gotta doc them some style points.
Pat, I think your forgetting one of the best jerseys in the history of MLS, Chicago’s link from two or three years ago. They need to start wearing it again.
FYI, according to link…
The Cleveland Browns are occasionally called the Brownies by their fans and used a brownie elf as an official mascot from their beginnings in 1946 until owner Art Modell phased it out in the mid-1960s. It was revived on a limited basis by the Browns since the team returned in 1999. During the 2004 Season, The Brownie appeared on the Team’s sideline ponchos and equipment trunks.
And I just got out of my english final, too. You’re.

I disagree with the Boston comment. 10-12 years ago, I would have been on board. However since then:
REd Sox have changed their road unis (red letters instead of black). Also, they wear the occassional truly awful bright red home jersey on Sundays. The Texas Rangers still own the name ‘Senators’ I believe and I don’t believe they were ever approached about allowing the Nationals to use it. Even if they had, I’m not sure Tom Hicks would part with it.
It’s the same reason that the Texans are not the Oilers. Bud Adams wouldn’t give the name up to Bob McNair.

also the Mayor of DC didn’t want to use the name Senators because DC is not actually representated by Senators, he was pushing for the name Greys (after the old negro league team)… MLB didnt like the name Greys so the compromised on the Nationals…

I’ll agree on three points. The Celtics link have to go. But you have to give them some credit for link alts. And there regular uniforms have stayed basically unchanged except for the shamrocks added to the shorts and back of the jersey.
The Red Sox sometimes Sunday uniform is definitley a little bit of an link.
The “flying elvis” (not football elvis) is definitley not a very attractive logo, but their actual uniforms aren’t all that bad. Better than probably half of the league. I’m talking about you Buffalo, Atlanta, Seattle, Denver, New Jersey/B (the Jets for all the non-TMQ readers), Philly, Minnesota, Baltimore, Tennessee, Jacksonville, Arizona and Tampa Bay. (I would link to all of those if I weren’t so lazy.)
But, you can’t really say that the Bruins change was all that bad. I mean link was clearly a superior uniform but there is nothing wrong with link. It’s got some great (and I mean great) sock striping, a matching hemline and arm bands. Plus the “traditional” Bruins spoked logo. At least they got rid of link.
I would like to see the Sox bring back the “black” (it’s actually navy blue) lettering on the away jerseys as well. But, I would love to see them bring back link (or as I like to call it… the greatest baseball uniform in the history of man).

The Chicago Fire can’t wear that uniform, per se. They could wear something similar to it if Adidas was willing to design one. But since it’s a Puma incarnation, it’ll have to settle for being the best MLS jersey of all time.
And do those Oregon helmets have flames on them? It certainly looks that way.
I’ve always wondered why the Nationals weren’t called the Washington Senators.
It’s their proper name. Even when they were known as the “Senators” in the first half of the 20th century, their official name was Nationals (a reference to the old National League team that was unceremoniously disbanded when the NL contracted from 12 to 8 teams after the disastrous 1899 season). Since Washington is once again in the National League, it was completely fitting that they once more adopted their true name.

Nike is the IIHF sponsor for the World Juniors.
Canada had those last year, except without the goofy side stripe. They are form-fitting. The problem? That material used to make the jersey is as close to cheap, flimsy polyester as one can get. And it’s like spandex: very elastic-y.
They look good, but they’re brutal compared to the link.

Can anyone who’s not from Pittsburgh deny that there’s something clearly ridiculous about the sleeves on this link I admit that this was once a classic look, but the Steelers, like the Browns, Packers & others, have been screwed by modern jersey patterns. You just have to adapt. Pittsburgh might be better off returning to their yellow yoke look of the late ’60s.

Got rid of this season, went to a 1970’s era black sweater for the third. I just got one. =)

If I’m not mistaken, didn’t Reebok buy Adidas last year???
Dudes, I’ve been championing this for years. The next fashion trend (not even sports fashion, but fashion in general) is going to be sports clothing that looks nothing like sports clothing. I wouldn’t be caught dead in any of the polos you see on NFL coaches these days but if the NFL or any other sport came out with polos as sharp as either of the ones Lamar Hunt is wearing, I’d buy in a second.
This has other applications as well. Ever see a skinny kid wearing one of those black hoodies with an angry looking angel or other bizarre religious imagery? Turn that sucker red and white and put an haloed A somewhere on it and you’ve got an LA Angels of Anaheim shirt. Tell me Angelenos wouldn’t be buying that like crazy. Promote the apocalypse and your team at the same time.

Chicago’s probably best-dressed for a city with all four major pro sports (the link, link, link and link all at or near the top of their respective leagues).
Listing “all four major pro sports” and leaving out the NBA? Interesting. Don’t think the Bulls hurt Chicago’s chances, but I’m biased.
I think the Bay Area should be included in this discussion for best outfitted city, even though it’s not technically a city. But c’mon, Giants A’s Niners Raiders all look sharp, the Sharks look way better than they used to when they broke into the league, and you can’t forget “the best basketball uniform ever,” aka the warriors throwbacks.

Adidas bought Reebok.
Don’t know if this was covered, it’s harder for me to check every day on the left coast, but along the seahawks mess up, the uni that aaron brooks wears for oakland has a black stripe on the arm like hasselbecks does, but I think he was the only one, look at pics rom the game in Cincy

With the current Niners and Sharks looks, Bay Area is at least behind Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Philly, NYC and Boston. Roughly tied with Dallas, Cleveland and Houston. Get the Niners to return to their 80’s look, move on up!
kudos to pete for taking the indiana helmet, but i have to disagree on the unis. i absolutely LOVE the all reds. they were the first solid unis i ever saw, and rather than gasp in shock and horror at something different and recoil, i decided i liked the look. it was unique, and, at the time, it wasnt being done in the nfl, so it was a look strictly used in college. i have had a soft spot for solids ever since, and i really dont get why everyone is soo up in arms about them…i think its cool and a new look, and its not like the other styles are done away with. so i say keep them, wear them proudly, hoosiers.

Haha – the Dolphins fans may disagree with you!
Not time consuming. link link link link. Alright fine. How about link one instead.
Man this reaminds me why the hell I hate Boston so much….
link link it’s all link Despite the Lions in black, their normal unis are link. Plus we should get 1 million bonus points for link, canceling out any stupidity caused by link. I mean, shit, U-M might as well be Detroit’s pro team.
woo hoo! i’m up early enough for #1!
I never understood this…who..besides yourself cares that you are first? That’s all you had to contribute to the discussion? Woo, I’m first?
Now for something uni-related..
With the upcoming change to the Toronto Maple Leafs logo..anyone other than me, think it will look more like their AHL affiliate they Marlies(sp?).

Like on the Dolphins’ unis?
