Uni-related cultural differences were on display earlier today at the 15th Asian Games at Khalifa Stadium in Doha. Note the nail polish, too. (And yes, there’s also some pretty clear camel-toe action, but let’s skip all those obvious jokes, shall we?)

Interesting uniforms for link in Indiana (see second picture down in link). Instead of a school name or team nickname, they just have a “R” on their uniforms above the front number. I remember North Carolina and Michigan doing this briefly a few years back.

Anyway, bad look then, bad look now.

Aw, MAN! OK, I got nothing, then.

I know there was a lot of talk about George Mason getting a Nike Elite snub earlier this year. Well the Patriots have some NikeWorld uniforms with shoulder stripes for today’s game at Duke.

Kinda surprised it took VPISU this long to get an all-sport Nike deal. The football team get scads of exposure, and they’re willing to wear whatever Nike asks (they wore mismatched jersey sleeves last year, not just mismatched undershirts).

I’d have expected Weaver, et al. to get a deal like this done years ago. It’ll save soccer, women’s lacrosse, etc. a ton of money.

I can’t remember the last time I got into the comment section this early…I won’t make any camel toe jokes, but I will point out an odd bump just to the right of the Mizuno logo on the bottoms. What is that? Could it be a drawstring knot?

    When was link discussed?

All the sudden, I’m not such a big fan of powder blue…

and for all the technology breakthroughs in uniform fabrics, weights, wicking, breathability, yadayadayada…to then tape a huge runner’s number over that seems ummm shall I say…stupid?

Seems like a business opportunity waiting to be hatched???

What makes it bad for me is that the logo is positioned as though it were a wordmark, making the uniform number the predominant visual on the front of the jersey.

If a team has an interesting enough logo (such as Texas, Kansas, Georgetown or Iowa, to cite a handful of examples), then I have no problem with it replacing a wordmark. But it should be the predominant visual on the jersey front, and the numeral should be moved to the left or right shoulder, where a memorial patch might be.

Just putting an “R” or any other letter is just unimaginative.

I’m sorry, but is it just me or does the bronze medal winner look like Andy Pettite?

That’s what I thought when I first saw it.

Speaking of Indiana high school unis, link prominently uses Wisconsin’s link. I’m sure that someone in Badgerland knows about it, because Warren Central has won 4 straight state championships and are ranked in the link high school programs nationally. Also interesting that Warren Central gets a pass for wearing the W on uniforms that are link (Wisconsin is an adidas school).
Anyone know if they have a special deal with Wisconsin? Paul mentioned a while ago that some schools (like Kansas State) make agreements with high schools for the right to use their logo. I don’t remember if Wisconsin has anything similar.

Mismatching lettering alert on ESPN right now: Appalachian State QB Armanti Edwards has a different font on his nameplate than the rest of his team. His nameplate has a simple Varsity Block font, while his teammates have a fancier Varsity Block with tails on the ends of the letters, like Maryland’s football team.

The number can’t be moved to the shoulder. There aer rules about number size and placement – see link.

There was some discussion a while back about NCAA and High School teams using or borrowing from NFL logos.

As a new resident of Athens and new supporter of the Georgia Bulldogs, their Packer-like logo annoyed me. Turns out, the Packers owe as much to the Dawgs as the Dawgs owe to the Packers… or do they?

    The Georgia “G” Helmet
In 1963 after becoming the Bulldogs’ Head Football Coach, Vince Dooley redesigned the football uniform choosing a red helmet with a black “G” on a white background as the dominant feature of the new uniform for the 1964 season.

He discussed with his staff that a forward-looking “G” would be an appropriate emblem for the helmet of the Georgia team. Dooley had just hired John Donaldson, former Georgia player from 1945 to 1948, as backfield coach. John was keen on the idea of a new image and volunteered his wife, Anne, who had a BFA in commercial art from UGA to design a logo for the new Georgia helmet with the general specifications Dooley had outlined. Dooley accepted Anne’s original “G” which fit his vision for a forward look to Georgia’s new emblem.

Since the Georgia “G”- though different in design and color- was similar to Green Bay’s “G”, Coach Dooley thought it best to clear the use of Georgia’s new emblem with the NFL team. Athletic Director Joel Eaves called for permission which was granted. However, since its inception in 1961, the Green Bay “G” has been redesigned several times and now looks like Georgia’s original 1964 “G.” Georgia is proud that the Packers apparently liked the special nuances of the Bulldogs’ forward-looking “G.”

    From the link

The link says they’ve had the same logo since 1961, and I can’t see the difference between this logo and link one, but I’m not going to be the next guy to tell link something he doesn’t want to hear.

Does anybody know where I can find a picture of the “Mercury Mets” from MLB’s Turn-Ahead-the-Clock night in 1999? I’ve seen link of the uniforms of most teams but none being worn during a game. I can’t even find a representation of the Mets’ futuristic jerseys. A link or any help of any kind would be greatly appreiciated.

“(And yes, there’s also some pretty clear camel-toe action, but let’s skip all those obvious jokes, shall we?)”

That’s a classic case of “the mumbler.” I can see her lips moving, but I can’t make out what they’re saying. :o)

I just got back from watching the UAlbany-Brown basketball game here in Albany, and damn, does Brown University have some terrible uniforms. Their main color, logically, is brown. Their unis are trimmed mostly in white, with some red features. However, the most heinous part of their unis are their shoes.

    link

They wear red shoes. This picture doesn’t come close to showing off the ugliness though – the shoes, made by Adidas, are SPARKLY, SHINY red. They are the ugliest thing I have ever seen in my life…

Mason gets the shaft from Nike. Nike already doesn’t sell Mason stuff and unless your name is Gonzaga Nike doesn’t care about the mid-majors outside of being able to smack their logo on their shorts. Mason should dump Nike, for real

I wonder how Reebok feels about russell’s name on an NFL field.

A few notes from the 1-AA/D-1 subdivision/whatever it’s called game between Appalachian State and Youngstown State.

App St.’s wearing all black, much like the Saints last week. Apparently, their players also have the option of where they place their merit decals. Although I don’t have a dvr to analyze them, there are some that appear to be placed to form significant patterns/letters/messages.

The Youngstown State quarterback wears number 24, but he has a white “25” sticker on the front of his helmet, above his right eye. Anybody know the significance of this?

I apologize for the lack of photos, Yahoo and ESPN haven’t yet updated their photo wires with images.

Here’s something to make Paul happy…Buffalo has vertically arched nameplates on the backs of the basketball uniforms.

Haven’t found any pics, but ESPN showed the end of the Buffalo-Pitt game and that’s where I saw them.

It was weird in the Youngstown State game, as previously mentioned, the quarter back was wearing number 24, that has become an oddity recently. The last quarterback I remember not wearing a number in the single digits or teens was Jared Lorenzen of Kentucky. This used to be a more common practice with college qb’s in the 80’s like Doug Flutie. I just found this interesting.

Noticed at the Butler/ISU game tonight that some of Butler’s players had nameplates that were bigger than other plays, Green and Campbell are two that I remember. Didnt know if there was any significance to this. I will try to find photos or if anyone has them, it would be great if you could post them.

Not a first, it was done in Boston nearly two years ago after the Fleet Center name was dropped and before the TD BankNorth Garden name was added

I noticed that the Magic are wearing throwbacks tonight in Orlando.

If memory serves, their old home unis had “Magic” across the chest but tonight’s home uniforms have “Orlando” across the chest.

    Am I mistaken?

    Hey Taylor,

I live in Northern Virginia (home of the GMU Patriots) and the link you provided is definitely incomplete.

I’m positive that George Mason has shirts exactly like those other 3; I know because I see them all the time when I’m on campus. (Even the Catholic chaplain wears one sometimes.)

Gilbert Arenas had an awful first quarter wearing white shoes with the gold alts, so he switched to black before the second quarter started.

It’s correct that Green, Campbell and Nellems for Butler have different nameplates than the rest of the team. Appearently, the black uniforms have been around for a couple of years but were never or extremely seldomly worn. When those three joined the team last year, appearently Nike either sent uniforms without names, or screwed up the font. This year’s freshmen have nameplate font that matches the rest of the team. This isn’t a problem on the home jerseys, since those are new this year, everyone matches.

The fun you have when you are a Nike school, but not one they really give a crap about.

STUBZ, i own the mercury mets jersey. god knows it hasn’t seen the light of day in many a years, but it is quite the keepsake.

I like cameltoes as much as the next guy, but imagine a society that demands women to dress like the poor woman from Bahrain!

I can imagine the Bahrainese (whatever) sports authority at their team selection meetings…

“Listen, if we further develop the running dress – with fabric between the runners elbow and waist, then we can possibly utilize the wind to increase her speed.” “Allah akbar! (that would be “Eureka!”), Yes – and the wrap around her head reduces wind resistance in that the wind doesn’t get tangled up in her hair!”

    Stupid f******g people…

I think that I read all of the comments, but what nation is the camel offender from? Is she Russian?

So, let me get this straight. Someone who was a graduate of a design school volunteeered to design a new original logo, and she came up with the Packers “g”…I think they should have expected something more. I think her teachers should have re-evaluted her school work for plagirism.

She would be from the land of “Borat,” i.e. Kazakhstan. From the looks of her, likely from a Russian family who moved to Kazakhstan during the Soviet days, like the cyclist Alexander Vinokourov.

Interestingly, while Russia is mostly in Asia, they compete in the European Champs for athletics (track and field). Israel also competes in the Euro Champs, because their more virulently anti-Semitic West Asian neighbors make a big stink about competing with them.

The woman is definetly from Kazakhstan as the powder blue color is common on many uniforms representing them as seen here with Vino’s cycling team that was banned from the Tour.

link a picture of Youngstown State’s QB with the #24 jersey and #25 helmet sticker.

A little bit more digging revealed that YSU #25 is Jeremiah Wright, the teams star LB who was injured in the Penn State game. I couldn’t find out if he played again after that game in mid-September, but if he’s still injured, it was probably the QB’s way of getting him “in the game.”
