Quite the whirlwind day yesterday. Got a call in the morning from…
Update, 11:50 a.m.: Well, you’ll never know who I got a call from, because I’ve been asked to show a bit more discretion. But I can tell you that it looks like our Ditch the Black campaign is gonna get some play in this Sunday’s New York Times, whoop-whoop!
Meanwhile, some notes from yesterday’s playoff games:
†¢ The Mets have become the latest team to pull that lame stunt of putting the team’s logo on the back of the pitching mound. Let’s hope this doesn’t become a habit.
†¢ Since the Mets were wearing black caps, they also had black undersleeves, black belts, and black socks — and, in the case of the injured Orlando “It’s a pull, not a cramp” Hernandez, a black soft-cast/brace thingie. If the team had been wearing blue caps/sleeves/belts/socks, would El Duque have had a blue cast?
†¢ Mark Kotsay had some major jersey flappage issues as he legged out his inside-the-park homer. Additional views available here, here, and here.
†¢ As I was getting ready to head out to Shea for yesterday’s Mets/Dodgers game, I was listening to the Twins/A’s game on the radio and heard the announcers briefly mention something about Esteban Loaiza’s jersey and a cup of coffee. When I got home, I checked the game video and found this report from Erin Andrews during the 4th inning:
A busy half-inning for Esteban Loaiza. That ball hit by Nick Punto caught him in the pinkie, so he came back to the dugout and started rubbing his pinkie. Well, all of a sudden Milton Bradley walked by and threw a water bottle up top. And that knocked over a thing of coffee, which nailed Esteban Loaiza right there. He had to walk back into the clubhouse, get a totally new jersey, pants on, new hat, new glove.
Don’tcha hate it when broadcasters toss around uptown, insider-y terms like “threw a water bottle up top” and “a thing of coffee”?
Site Talk: Two items of note relating to this here web venue:
†¢ Don’t overlook the “Links” section, located in the right-hand column of the page. Readers frequently ask me for stuff that’s already listed right there in “Links” (por ejemplo: “Is there a web site that shows those futuristic ‘turn ahead the clock’ baseball uniforms from the late 1990s?”). Tons of good info lurking in there, people — poke around, explore, have fun.
†¢ Still not too late to submit questions to for Todd Krevanchi’s upcoming Uni Watch Profiles interview with me (we’ll get around to it soon, promise). If you have questions about me, about the site, about the Uni Watch World Domination Scheme, send them to Todd, here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Yesterday’s Ticker had an item regarding Indiana freshman gridders Adrian Burks and Aaron Burks, whose nameplates read “Ad. BROOKS” and “Aa. BROOKS.” Unfortunately, we had no photo. But now, thanks to a link provided in yesterday’s Comments, we do. … Good season-opening NHL note from John Muir (no, not that John Muir): “During the Avalanche/Stars game [last night], Darryl ‘Razor’ Reugh commented on the fact that both goalies (Dallas’s Turco, Colorado’s Theodore) sport gargoyles on their masks. He even gave a basic French lesson to the viewers regarding the derivation of ‘gargoyle’ [according to Wikipedia: from the French gargouille, originally the throat or gullet, cf. Latin gurgulio, gula, and similar words derived from root gar, to swallow, the word representing the gurgling sound of water]. Though the two goalies use different interpretations, the use of the gargoyle is meant to symbolize the force/creature that wards off evil spirits from attacking the castle/fortress/etc. For a goalie this makes perfect sense, and that was the point Razor was getting at.”
The Loaiza coffee incident has me wondering how many players change uniforms mid-game, whether it be because of spillage or simply because they are sweaty.
I have also always found it odd that in baseball players who have been removed from a game will routinely hit the showers before the game has concluded, instead of sitting in the dugout with their teammates.
Did anyone catch Barry Melrose ripping on the Sabres new uniforms this morning on Sportscenter? He said something like he would never wear them. If someone catches it again, throw the full transcript up.
I don’t think the Mets will bring out the blue caps in the NLDS. Maybe in the NLCS (which they will get to), they’ll bring out the pinstripes with the blue.
Glavine tonight!
[This comment took three attempts, which is sad on my part.]
I caught the bit about the gargoyles and was going to mention it here, but I suppose it’s too late now.
All equipment manufacturers love using that link of the goalie stick as a link, but check out the linkon Cam Ward’s stick.

Yes, quoting my own comment! Apparently Nike owns Bauer, so it’s probably not technically logo creep, but still… just couldn’t resist sneaking their logo on there… gotta love ’em!
Did anyone else feel that both the Twins and A’s wearing their dark jerseys yesterday was a bit odd?
I caught some of the Sabres-‘Canes game last night and it was the first time I saw the Buffa-slug in action. Horrible. My wife asked why the Buffalo Sabres had some sort of boomerang as their logo. On OLN/VS/whatever-the-heck-they-are-today, with the score box at the top, the logo did actually appear to be a boomerang, thanks to being shrunken down so much.
Going back to yesterday:
I was busy all day after lunch yesterday, so I didn’t get to check the comments again until this morning. But the outburst of Michigan readers makes me think maybe we here in the mitten should push for Paul to make a visit to southeastern Michigan sometime in the future. Despite Pioneer High School’s color scheme, Ann Arbor would still love to host a visit, I’m sure … I’d nominate Ashley’s (on State Street) as a gathering spot.
Andrew, Dexter’s helmets definitely confuse me. Michigan pattern, U of Minnesota colors. But I’ll be there Friday anyway.
Kevin, even though Pioneer is purple, I love the location of the football stadium. That makes up for a lot, in my mind.
Here’s some clash-of-the-logos from a Leafs-Sens preseason game. Gotta look close, but Leafs’ goalie link has Bauer/Nike pads and stick, and RBK (it’s still Koho no matter who they think they’re fooling) gloves. Wondering which side’s exec had the bigger aneurysm.
That cap in the above pic is navy, right Paul?
Nice traditional cap on the guy from the times.
Paul however…

The same Barry Melrose who praised the old Phoenix Coyotes link?
Looking at the rest of the league the Buffaslug isn’t all that great, but it’s still better than the demonic floating Buffalo head and that awful color scheme.

I was wearing a Mr. Met cap. It’s the only even vaguely Mets-related cap that I own. As I’ve said many times, I’m not a merch guy and don’t really care what fans wear — I only care what the players wear.

paraphrasing the commercial, “it’s about what the pros wear.”
Did anyone else feel that both the Twins and A’s wearing their dark jerseys yesterday was a bit odd?
YES!!! It was hard to tell which team was in the field. During lunch, it was impossible to tell the two apart, even with a big-screen (but not HD) TV.
Lots and lots of pitcher nose-wiping-on-shirt last night. Sorry, no link. But a friend of mine who I was watching the game with theorized that at least some of the time they are swearing and don’t want to be caught on camera and lip-read. I dunno – I’m skeptical, but I so want the shirt Kleenex thing explained that I think I’ll buy it just for my peace of mind.

Well that’s easy enough to understand. It’s hard enough to track/criticize/praise players in 4 pro-sports, major college sports and some international stuff for good measure. You’d go insane with all the crap that fans see as passable for public use.
I don’t mind the team logo on the mound – when you watch a lot of games, it’s a good reminder where the game is being played – but I can just see SCOTTS TURF BUILDER or TORO LAWN MOWERS or something there. It will happen.
I just realized this yesterday, but out of the 9 teams that wear 2 letter interlocking cap logos 6 of them are in the playoffs. 4 out of 6 teams from the national league which is all that is possible. The link and Rockies didn’t make it, but the link(which technically have 3 letters on there), link, link and link are all in. And in the AL we have the link and link. The link who are never making the playoffs didn’t get in. Some would say I’m forgetting the link, but they don really have an “interlocking logo”.
Bauer and Nike decided for this season to stop producing separate lines of equipment. They had been making 2 different sets, generally appealing to different markets (Nike for the younger folks, Bauer for the older guys). This was costly for R&D and production, so they switched to one line, and are producing a wider range under one name. All Bauer Nike equipment will feature the combined logo. This is different from RBK/THC, which still produces equipment under several names, including RBK, CCM, and Jofa, among others, despite being owned by one company.
The link link didn’t work

I’m gonna say no cause that hat is never worn during a game
A few notes from last night’s NHL opening games:
1) TSN, The Score, and Sportsnet all ripped the new Sabres logo here in Canada. However, the Buffalo announcers made an excellent point: any press is good press. And they went out of their way to thank the thousands of people who complained about Buffalo’s new jersey because of the attention it gave to the Buffa-Slug. Personally, I’m gonna pull a TMQ and refer to them only as the “Barney Rubble Hairpieces” now whenever the Sabres are mentioned. Big props to Tim Macallef of The Score for the Barney Rubble comparison. It made me chuckle for some time.
2) The traditional bottom striping is missing from the Barney Rubble Hairpieces’ jerseys, and has been pointed out in numerous conversations on here. However, all that white last night is too much. They need something else on the torso of the jersey in order to make the jerseys look like a sweater, not a K-Fed stained tank top.
3) Classy move by the Maple Leafs to open the night wearing jerseys featuring the names and numbers of Borje Salming (#21), Hap Day (#4), and Red Kelly (#4), all who had their names and numbers raised to the rafters. Even classier? They wore their alternates with the old Maple Leaf logo. Normally, I call them the “Maple Laughsâ€Â, but, in this case, they deserve my respects for honouring three of their greats. Kudos to you, Toronto Maple Leafs, for honouring the past and respecting tradition.
Glad to have the NHL back! Looking forward to more opening nights tonight!

That is such a load of crap. The notion that “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” is a lazy, all-purpose non-answer from people who can’t come up with any substantive arguments to defend their positions. Let’s try to apply it to some other situations:
• “Sure, the Devil Rays have been the worst team in baseball for solid decade now — but hey, that’s what they’re known for, so it’s kinda like they’re the best at what they do!”
• “Sure, Mike Tyson’s life is a train wreck — but hey, at least he’s still in the headlines!”
• “Sure, everyone’s talking about how bad things are going in Iraq — but hey, at least they’re talking about it! That plays right into our hands!”
And so on.

I don’t think it’s LC if that’s the place where the logo has been since they started making goalie sticks. Now if there were Swoosh over the tape on his stick, or if the tape were ‘swooshified’ then we’d have a clear cut case of LC.
Let’s hope Met management doesn’t take the same stance as the Buffalo announcers when addressing the Ditch the Black campaign.

I agree with you, Paul. I am not defending the announcers, however it goes back to your notion of “breaking a story”. The publicity they got, both good and bad, was good for the Barney Rubble Hairpieces’ in that they were forced to adopt the old jersey as the alternate to appease the outraged fanbase. I’m pretty sure it would have resulted in a Golisano hunt had they not listened to the fans.
In your Iraq example, isn’t that George “Dubya” Bush’s policy on the war?
You should have heard Tim Macallef and Sid Sexeiro, the announcers on The Score, cut down the Barney Rubble Hairpieces after the “thank you” comment by the Barney Rubble Hairpieces’ announcers. The comparisons made were:
– it looks like an angry goat, if angry goats had no legs and looked like lightning.
– Donald Trump called, he wants his trademarked hair back.
– don’t worry about copyrights because the link and link will never adopt that logo.
There were so many that these two were literally cracking up on air. I wish I had taped it.

Curious, why is it Toronto Maple “Leafs” and not Maple “Leaves?”
One other thing I noticed during last night’s Stars-Avalanche game…Uniform changes to the OFFICIALS. Not a huge one, mind you, but helmets are now required equipment. Mick McGeough, Paul Devorski, and Kerry Fraser now have to cover their melons on the ice. Devorski actually started to last season after the Olympics (I also heard he got nailed by the puck earlier in the season, right on his bald spot). Sure enough, this year’s NHL Rulebook now says that officials equipment includes a jersy, black trousers, and a “League-approved black helmet.” So much for the days of easily being able to tell those guys apart.
I can’t believe that no one has mentioned Tim Robbins yet. He was in the booth for an inning or two last night. Black Mets hat and Black Mets jersey. I think I will boycott his movies from now on. But Ron Howard on the other hand is now in my list of top ten Hollywood bad-asses. Wearing a LA hat in NYC in the playoffs. Takes balls man (or really big security guards).

Kim, my thinking is that it’s been logo creep from day one… even when Jacques Plante/Glenn Hall/Gump Worsley had Koho, CCM or whatever Hockey specific brand ruled the sport back in the 50’s – 60’s. A Non creep stick would just be a piece of wood with the gk’s choice of tape, no?
I have teenage kids who are huge Mets fans and they love the black hats with the blue brim. They love the snow white jerseys. They love the black unis. They love the road greys. They love the Sunday pinstripes. And they love the all-blue hats. This is they way that the team they know and love dresses. The only asthetic arguement against these different looks is tradition. But this is THEIR tradition. It works and it is decidedly not the Yankees. Which also works in NY.
Hey Paul did you happen to catch Barry Melrose’s pastel purple suit??

I remember wondering if he had pulled that circa 1993 suit from the back of his close or whether it was a loaner from Derrick Coleman.
found this on link today. (he’s the former ‘daily quickie’ guy on twwl’s page2)
“More niche-sport news: MLS will let teams sell ads on the front of jerseys. I’ve argued for a while, this is an inevitability in both the NBA and MLB.
There’s nothing sacred about jerseys – at least nothing that the big dollars from sponsors can’t buy. NASCAR fans and European soccer fans (who eclipse MLB or NBA fans for passion) don’t seem to mind.
I have yet to hear a good argument — beyond “what about the tradition!” — for keeping advertisements off MLB or NBA uniforms. It’s simply not worth getting that upset over.
(Ideally, owners would take that jersey-sponsorship revenue and have to earmark it for either reducing the price of tickets or parking OR for growing payroll to make the team better. I’m not holding my breath.)”
I think you need to have a little conversation with him Paul.

I like the black brim that the Mets sometimes wear. As a Phillies fan, I can’t stand the Mets. Only when they play the Braves or represent the NL in the World Series can I root for them. Although I have gained respect for a number of their players over the years and even respect their fans (especially since bonding with a bunch of them at a game against the Braves at Turner), who I nevertheless can’t stand to see at Phils home games, I simply balk at the sight of the Mets’ uniforms. The black brimmed hats are slightly less Met-like, therefore they induce less primal responses. Long live the black!

Curious, why is it Toronto Maple “Leafs” and not Maple “Leaves?”
The team was formed in 1917, but wasn’t called the Maple Leafs until 1926 when the new owner, Conn Smythe, renamed it after the Maple Leaf Regiment from WWI. Since the proper name of the group is “Maple Leaf Regiment”, Leafs, not Leaves would be grammatically correct.

It’s already happened — the Yomiuri Giants had Konami (the video game company) sleeve patches on their practice and junior-varsity uniforms when he played for them, and since then, several teams have begin wearing ads on the sleeves of their regular uniforms.
Not including patches connected to the companies that own the teams, here are the ones that I can think of:
Yomiuri Giants: Konami (might be only for practics and minors)
Hanshin Tigers: Joshin electronics store
Fukuoka Softbank Hawks: Apartment and Mansion real estate link; something else on the road
Kintetsu Buffaloes (~2004): Acom consumer lending. Those sharks charge 29.2% annual interest, so this has to be the worst one of all.
Not to mention the stuff they stick on the batting helmets…!

Some history about the Reds though. Originally the Cincinnati ball club was the Red Stockings starting in 1869. In 1878 they shortened the name to just Reds.
Then in 1954 against the backdrop of the McCarthy hearings and the rising threat of Communism the Reds change their name to Redlegs to not be linked with the Soviets, who were generally referred to as Reds.
In 1960, after 6 years known as the Redlegs, the team goes back to the traditional Reds name.

The Mets didn’t change all their colors as your flag analogy suggests. They added black. And yes, it was a marketing decision. But if you look at the recent history of the Mets, they were losing the fight for the hearts and minds of NY. Obviously, the product on the field is the only way to win that war, but trying to distinguish yourself from your competition is a way to win a battle. And don’t give me the the crap about how the black is ok because of the Giants, why dont we change the numbers on the front to red then for Dodgers, then maybe we can compare the black jerseys with the Oregon Ducks football unis for worst ever.
I don’t even hate the black that much, I hate those horrible black and blue caps the most.
I think most of us have ended up disliking the black because they hardly wear the traditional unis anymore even though they are supposed to be their home regulars. They didn’t even have a transition into those horrible black and blue caps, they just threw them at us one season and kept the classic blues under lock and key

Look around your desk. Everything has a manufacturer’s logo on it. He went on to say that it was a gift from a good friend of his, a celebrity, but I can’t remember exactly who he said it was from. Garth Brooks seems to ring a bell?? If anyone can provide more detail please post. The entire exchange was “tongue in cheek” and mildly amusing.
As for his comments regarding the Buffaslug JERSEY, for the sake of all that is decent in the world please stop using the term UNIFORM when referring to Hockey JERSEYS, he did say that they were the worse in the league and he went on to detail some of his thoughts on why. Barry was right on the money with his assesment of the Buffaslug although I do think the Washington Capitals are running a close second! The good news for both of these teams is that the solution is right in front of their proverbial faces….GO BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL DESIGNS!
He did indeed say it was from his friend Garth Brooks and it was a gift for Barry’s 50th birthday…I think he just lost a bet and had to wear that thing.
And what’s wrong with calling what hockey players wear a uniform? That’s what it is. Yes the top they wear is called correctly a jersey or even a sweater, but taken together with everything else that a hockey playuer wears on the ice, it is a uniform.
Ironically, Grapes used to call then LA Kings coach Melrose “Billy Ray ” something….it alluded to Billy Ray Cyprus, but Don Cherry never got it right, or was being cute. It obviously referred to the mulltt.

In response to all these black uniform lovers. BLACK AND BLUE DON’T GO TOGETHER!!! in any situation. Ever since I can remember my mom and sisters would riddicule me if I wore black and blue together, in their words “those colors clash”. Its not just that the Mets are straying from tradition, it is simply a fashion don’t…
They didn’t even have a transition into those horrible black and blue caps, they just threw them at us one season and kept the classic blues under lock and key
okay rant over.
how can you say that black and blue dont go together? Black can go with any other color and it looks sharp. My school uses blue and grey as our colors and the wrestling team added black and look like they can kick anyones ass at anytime. its intimidating, and sharp.

I don’t think it’s LC if that’s the place where the logo has been since they started making goalie sticks. Now if there were Swoosh over the tape on his stick, or if the tape were ‘swooshified’ then we’d have a clear cut case of LC.
It should only be logo creep in places where logos previously didn’t go. The stick branding has always been on the paddle in various sizes. So I would think this could not be considered a case of logo creep. Just cause its a swoosh doesn’t make it logo creep.
Is equipment branding logo creep? I’d argue it’s not. Are we complaining about Louisville Slugger stamping their bats? Or the Rawlings logo on the baseball? No. I think it’d be a shame if those logos went away.
Look around your desk. Everything has a manufacturer’s logo on it. Its not that uncommon. i don’t think logo creep pertains to equipment unless we were talking about a goalie taking the ice with a billboard ad on his paddle like “This stick brought to you by Cingular.” Of course they shouldn’t go crazy, but lets distinguish between the actual UNIFORM and the equipment.
Dude, it’s not like they just added a few tasteful black accents here and there. Their primary color (not just for caps but also for undersleeves, belts, socks [which are rarely seen anymore, but still…]) went from blue to black. And that’s very much akin to changing the colors of a flag.
Is equipment branding logo creep?
I love this discussion. Two quick thoughts:
1) I think equipment is definitely different than a jersey, cap, pants, etc. Equipment is uni-related, but it’s not part of the uniform per se — I think brand logos are generally OK here, although some companies certainly get carried away with it.
2) In fairness, I think many of us (myself included) are more favorably disposed toward older equipment logos — Rawlings, Spalding, Bauer, etc. — because we think of them as more old-school companies, as opposed to Reebok and Nike. Objectively, though, there’s nothing inherently more offensive about a swoosh on a goalie stick as opposed to a Bauer logo on a goalie stick. In the greater context of Swoosh Nation, however, it feels more offensive.

How do you anti-blackers feel about the number-only black jerseys the Mets wore in 1999 or thereabouts? I really liked those — shadows really clutter things up if there are player names on the back, but with only numbers they look great — the white ones too (which you can see at the top of Mets by the Numbers).
Maybe those could be the alternates with the pinstripes and grays being the regular jerseys.

I prefer to think of myself as an insurgent within Swoosh Nation.
You’re right though. There’s legitimate reasons for a logo on equipment. Just as long as it doesn’t get carried away/obvious.
The classic example would be the swoosh logo on a shoe. That’s OK to me. Does it also need to be molded into the sole and displayed on the heel? That seems to be logo creep.

Ok Paul, I have to ask a question for clarification:
Is it just the Mets and their use/overuse of black that has you all rednecked and hairlipped? (read: upset)
I know it’s been mentioned here that black is overused in sports but then those same people complain about the combinations of colors beyond that. The best example is last week someone LAMBASTED purple because it doesn’t go well with bright colors. I know how you feel about purple but seriously, if black is overused and purple is out of the question then what are teams supposed to wear? We have what, about 30 teams in each of the 4 major sports? Are all of them supposed to wear white and navy pinstripes? We already have too much red, white, and blue in MLB, (and that is NOT an anti-patriotic rant so no one go there). I’m just trying to see where you think they should go if your opinion is that there should be less black and zero purple.
Let me start by saying I am not a METS fan…but I think the problem with the black (like Paul and a few others have said) is that it has completely taken over. I think a happy medium would be to go back to the traditional home and roads, and keep the black alts for sundays only or once or twice a week. That would be a happy medium, right?

Yes Perfect exactly
The question I ask for all the antiblack Mets fans, is what would you suggest is a better alternative? You know in this day and age that the Mets will always have some kind of alternative cap/jersey? What do you suggest to replace the black? The White Goodhumor hats? How bout Orange Hats (you know you hated the orange practice jerseys)? How about Purple? Or they could be another team to jump on the red bandwagon (you know you would hate blue/orange/red unis)? Since the Mets have gone to alternative uniforms (like most teams in professional sports have), the Black is the most reasonable alternative for the Mets in my opinion. I could see the Mets wearing the Blue more often (which they have worn more this year than in the past few years), but with them having an alternative uniform, I would rather see black than other options.

Actually, I would say that the problem with the black is that it’s not an official color. The Mets’ official colors (blue and orange) have a specific meaning, as has been pointed out. It’s as if the Orioles decided to add a blue hat to their repetoire. The problem is that people see black as just an accent color, and don’t appreciate that it’s an official color for several teams. For the Mets it’s not an official color, and it’s incredibly lame that entire hats or jerseys use it.

I agree 100%. Really, the biggest reason I made the initial post is that I didn’t know the story told in post #20. Now, knowing that, I agree that it probably isn’t technically logo creep. But as Paul put it, it sure does feel wrong having that damn swoosh brazenly slapped on there next to a time-honored hockey brand.
First of all, I am glad that I read the post in the morning even if I can’t comment at that time. Think of what I might miss if I couldn’t read until later.
Second, lots of good stuff today. My take:
For: Black in uniforms—except for the Mets, of course. Black goes with anything—even blue.
Against: Slim-fit hockey jerseys.
For: Funky former Phoenix Coyote uniforms, replete with crazy striping.
Against: Ohio’s new uniforms, replete with crazy striping.
For: Shortening team nicknames using the first part of the name, such as the Vikes.
Against: Shortening team nicknames using the last part of the name, such as the ‘Lanche.
For: Captain Morgan’s Rum.
Against: Torii drinking said rum before game three.
This is fun! Everybody try it. This is what’s great about the board—so many strong opinions. It all comes down to personal taste, really. Except the Oregon Ducks’ uniforms. Those are just bad!

Those are quotes from two separate comments, but I’m gonna answer them jointly. First of all, I’m not opposed to black per se (not the same way I’m opposed to purple) — black has a long history with many teams, like the Raiders, the Orioles, etc. My objection is that the Mets (and Reds, and Royals, etc.) just adopted black for no good reason otther than jersey sales. That’s total bullshit.
And I reject the notion that alaternate caps are a fait accompli. And even if a team has to have an alternate cap, why does it need alternate sleeves, belts, socks, catcher’s gear, etc.? In other words, even if the Mets were to wear their black-and-blue cap on the road, why can’t all the accessories stay blue? THAT’S THE TEAM’S COLOR!

This is an interesting comment, and one that I think gets to the heart of the anti-black masses (with whom I agree). The Mets colors represent New York’s National League heritage. When you go to the game with your kid, you can say “You see those colors, blue and orange? There are new brands. Mission makes everything, Easton makes everything except helmets, Itech makes everything except skates, Warrior makes sticks, Louisville makes goalie gear, sticks and gloves, Eagle makes gloves, etc. Winnwell, Ferland, etc. are missed, but there’s always going to be weird brands in hockey.
Too bad Mission and Itech are owned by the same company and Warrior is owned by New Balance

Ok, this is a sweater and this is a jersey. And just for the record I think that black and blue go just fine together. C’mon, it was time for a little levity.
sorry the rest of my post didn’t show.
Dude everybody knows that hockey players wear sweaters because they are so tough. Plus it was really cold before Hockey Arenas came along.
I’m not a big NL fan, so I don’t know if the Dodgers have worn these Unis before.
Is it my TV or are those light blue road jerseys?

I was just about to say the same thing! those dodger jerseys definitely seem to have a blue tint, i thought it was my TV aswell. Its probably the lights though
Funny, but not so funny…
definate logo creep alert:

Various:
My favorite of all the Met’s 100 uni combos tonight. But I think they have the black hat/blue bill.
whats that logo flapping off Paul LoDucas’s elbow guard?
when i type text into this box, why is there a delay for it to show up?
and how old IS kenny lofton?
“Lose the Black.” La, la, la. Every half-assed uniform desinger wannabe has it out for some color or another: black, teal, purple. Why not just mandate that ALL uniforms look EXACTLY like the Yankee$’ uniforms, and just change the city name? Oh, and make sure they wear 70s-style stirrups, while you’re at it!
BTW, does my signature get me a tissue and some lubricant?
Ok, did anyone catch JD Drew in tonight’s game. He doesn’t have blue piping on the sleeves of his jersey. He’s the only one. He still has the piping around the neck and down the front, but nothing on the sleeves. Someone needs to post photos.

Yeah, definitely no piping on the sleeves, he just made those 2 fly ball outs, got a good view of the sleeves
Some would say I’m forgetting the link, but they don really have an “interlocking logo”.
what about the chicago white sox; the s-o-x is interlocking
Just a thought:
You know how the angels have a link on a red cap. Well I was thinking about alternate caps the mets could have and I came up with this:
what about a blue cap with the blue interlocking NY logo with the orange outline on this link with a black drop shadow to match the writing on the link
Any thoughts?

While I agree this is a great Jersey, (it’s hard to find any faults with any of the original six teams) the Blackhawks’ ownership deserves a swift kick in the arse for introducing the “all black” alternate a couple of years ago. I personally feel that if an original six franchise feels the need to introduce an alternate they should stick to any of the classic designs of the past. Tradition my friends!! This goes for the Bruins as well…Winnie the Pooh, shame shame!
Does that include the Rangers’ Statue of Liberty (or Planet of the Apes….you decide) jerseys/sweaters, too?
You know it does! And hockey sweater is fine as that is exactly what they were for years, sweaters!! Tradition tradition! Uniforms however are what the ushers or popcorn venders are wearing, not the hockey players, they are wearing sweaters, socks and hockey gear all of which some of you are going to argue are parts of the uniform but trust me in all of my years of playing hockey I’ve never once been told “it’s time to get your uniform on”, it’s just not what it’s called.
And Kim, c’mon the old Washington Jerseys were awesome, great color scheme, simple logo with the stick for the “t” and of course the stars on the pants, unique and classic!!!
I completely agree with your rant, Bluenoser. As much as I hated Langways, Stevens’& Hatcher’s Capitals teams in late 80’s thru mid 90’s.. those sweaters and pants were wonderful, especially the home version. Kinda reminds me of the old New York Nets star spangled (Dr J) uniforms.
You know, there’s a lot of back and forth about the mets having black in their unis and how the blue is supposed to represent the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Orange is to represent the NY Baseball Giants. Now, I don’t like random use of black either (especially when used as the base color for the jersey), but the Mets’ colors now are orange, black, blue, and white.
Giants = orange and black
Dodgers = blue and white
If you look at it that way, the tribute thing still works.

I think Vic gasped it’s last breath a few years ago, but Christian is still going (I use Christian goalsticks, they have an awesome custom stick program). I think a couple NHLers are using them, Mike Dunham comes to mind…

I seem to recall that Davey Christian of the Capitals used Christian sticks because it was his dad’s company… if my scant memory serves this was right after the 1980 olympics. I seem to remember that he had a brother (lesser talent) plying his trade in the NHL -but he didn’t play long.

Dude…. check out all the other Mexican first division jerseys…. puke inducing. Nevermind a salary cap, they need to institute a cap on the number of ads each club can slap on.
Not more than ten minutes ago during the Mets/Dodgers game, Fox showed Eric Gagne in the dugout wearing an L.A. BP hat. No picture, but anyone watching the game would notice. The blue and white scheme is flipped on the BP hats.
Once again, the old Caps look was a dated 70’s look, not a classic 70’s look. They need a logo to go on the front of the jersey, not a wordmark. I don’t care how cute the stupid “t-hockey stick thingy” is. And/Or all the stars on the sleves and chest must go, too. It’s just too much stuff on a jersey….it looks like the Mexican soccer league thing above.

No more annoying than people calling the Avalanche the Avs. Or the Vikings the Vikes. Or the Cavaliers the Cavs. Or the Buccaneers the Bucs.

Not the same — “Avalanche” is not plural, which I think is why a lot of Avalanche fans seem to prefer “Lanche” to “Avs.”
Just don’t call Tampa Bay the “Ning.” I don’t think anyone likes that.
‘Avalanches’ is a verb, not a noun. ‘Avalanche’ works quite well plural and singular. Or so says Dictionary.com
“The question I ask for all the antiblack Mets fans” Wow, someone should have thought about that before writing it, it reads really weird.
anyways, Paul, your right somewhat. the black getting slammed down our thoughts is too much. yes, as an Ohio boy, I root for the Reds too. but the black on the backdrop on their logo looks good. it make the logo jump a little more, atleast when its on the white and red pin stripes. see link but it’s too much when you have things like link not matter how pretty that swing is! and i may really like the red pinstripes, but link is one alt i can enjoy. just don’t let them make link sleves black, PLEASE!!! and i love the red wings and the Jackets, and i think out of the new teams, link are about the best out there. so what, outside the original 6 are everyone’s fav hockey unis?
i dont think anyone here is anti blue and black together. its a beautiful combinations, link. its just thats its not the mets.

Agreed. The only blue that doesn’t go well with black is navy. Anything royal and lighter does look sharp with black.

I don’t recall if Dave had a brother or not, could be. A fair number of the guys on the 1980 team used Christian, including (obviously) Dave, who used them throughout his decent NHL career. Christian Brothers Hockey was started by his father and uncle, who were both members of the 1960 gold medal winning US Olympic hockey team. Andy Moog used Christian sticks as well (which had a strong influence on this hack goalie when he was a young Bruins fan)…

Well, if that’s the case, us New Yorkers must choose to root for either the Metropolitans or the Highlanders.
come to think of it….in addition to the rum im pretty sure i did see the top of Jo Boo’s hair in Hunter’s locker…most definitely a Cerano fan
While I don’t care for the Mets black approach, what bother me the most is the gratuitous use of black on the pinstripe jerseys. Why can’t they just leave those blue and orange. The black drop-shadowing looks horrible and completely ruins an otherwise classic jersey.
