It’s becoming increasingly clear that Tsuyoshi Shinjo is going to need his own wing in the Uni Watch Museum of Athletics Aesthetics. As we’ve already discussed over the past few months, his farewell tour in Japan has seen him wearing collared undershirts, checkered wristbands, and the opposing team’s uniform. But he really outdid himself in last week’s Japanese All-Star Game.
It started with the pre-game photo, where all the players wore their uniforms — except for Shinjo, who wore a flashy shirt and shades (that’s him in the back row, third from the right). Then, during the game, he wore red camouflage wristbands, a matching undershirt, special shoes, and — the real showstopper — an oversized belt buckle with a scrolling LED message, which read, “Never Mind Whatever I Do, Fan Is My Treasure” (here’s another view). He later gave the belt to a fan. For good measure, he also swung a swirl-painted bat. Here’s the full effect, and here’s a video of his first at-bat, where you can actually see the belt buckle message as it’s scrolling. There’s also a Shinjo highlight video here, and you can see his belt buckle scrolling as he makes a diving catch here.
Somewhat amazingly, Shinjo wasn’t the game’s biggest spectacle. That title goes to his Nippon Ham Fighters teammate Hichori Morimoto, who dressed up as the anime character Piccoro — just a bit bizarre, to say the least. There’s some video of him midway through this clip.
(Big thanks to Uni Watch Far East Correspondent Jeremy Brahm, who provided most of the above links.)
Help Wanted Received: Ãœber-thanks to everyone who responded to yesterday’s call for help in tabulating all the “worst uniform ever” emails. Seriously, I was blown away by how many of you volunteered your services — just the latest proof that Uni Watch readers are the coolest.
The “lucky” intern turned out to be Mike Orr. I figured he’d do part of the job and then I’d hand off the project to someone else to pick up where he left off. But in a truly heroic effort, Orr spent most of yesterday slogging through all of the nearly 600 responses — many of which featured multiple nominations and lengthy diatribes — and broke them down into a neat, easy-to-follow document. The fruits of his labors will be featured either in next week’s ESPN.com column or in the column two weeks after that.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Good article here about Mike MacDougal’s cap problems. … Remember the Devil Ray with the giant “W” taped to his windbreaker? An explanation comes from Cork Gaines: “It was Jae Seo, and it appears that the ‘W’ was from some prankster teammates. Seo has yet to earn a ‘W’ with the Rays, and his teammates felt he deserved one.” Ouch. … Good story from Shawn Dzwonkowski, recalling a 1999 game in Milwaukee: “I had third-row seats behind the visiting team’s on-deck circle. While Ken Caminiti was on deck, he pulled his batting gloves out of his back pocket and, unbeknownst to him, the pocket was hanging out! Being an observant fellow, I pointed this out to my friends. We all gawked and snickered, and then one of my friends started shouting, “Hey, Caminiti, your pocket’s hanging out!” He continued shouting this several more times, and then Caminiti reached around, tucked his pocket back in, and kindly turned and thanked us.” Given what we now know about Caminiti, they’re lucky he didn’t fly into a ‘roid rage and brain them with his bat. … David Sonny asks, “Could Antione Winfield not ‘cage the snake,’ if you catch my drift?” … Bill Blevins notes that Akinori Otsuka has “JAPAN” printed on his glove. … More news about Bob Wickman’s plus-sized physique, courtesy of Patrick Lindsey: “When Wickman got traded to the Braves last week, the team was in Philly. The Braves didn’t have any uniforms in his size, so they had to call Majestic and have someone drive his uniform down to the ballpark from the factory, which luckily was in Bangor, Pennsylvania, which is only a short trip. As for the pants, he wore a spare pair of Chad Paronto’s.”
In the picture of Shinjo’s shoes, it looks like he’s got some sort of elastic band wrapped around the bottom of his spikes (much like the way soccer guys tie wrap their laces around their shoes). link
For anyone who wants an Iced-Out Scrolling LED Belt Buckle…
link
In that big all-star photo, does the guy on the end of the back row have the ugly “Nike” mismatched shoulders on his uni? Ugh.
Did anyone else notice that Marlins starting pitcher Josh Johnson last night did not have the MLB logo on the back of his hat? I went back and forth through my TiVo and no logo was to be found. If anyone has a picture or reasoning please advise.
Totally unrelated to the discussion of the day, but with Sal Fasano being traded to the Yankees he has to shave or trim one of the few great ‘staches of MLB.
link
Obviously Japanese Baseball is in on the pajama pant look! Can we exile all MLB Players guilty of this Baseball Sin to Japan?
Shouldn’t Antione Winfield be wearing a cup anyway? Or is this just a promo picture in the Vikings new uniforms?
You’re with me, crazy Japanese Guy
A link to a great ‘stache. This is why people hate the Yankees.
In the picture of Shinjo’s shoes, it looks like he’s got some sort of elastic band wrapped around the bottom of his spikes (much like the way soccer guys tie wrap their laces around their shoes). link
Looks more like pants elastic – gymnastics style – to keep the pajama bottoms down.
Beyond the rattler, did anyone else notice the belt buckle sleeve Antoine Winfield is sporting?
Scrolling LED Belt Buckle. Wow. Just wow. You really have to refine an astounding lack of taste to wear something like that. On national TV, no less!
Another shot of Hichori (what a bizarre name) Morimoto looking like some kind of space alien:
link
I think the space alien is from Dragon Ball, but don’t quote me unless it’s correct!
that’s a shame, because he looks like Clue Heywood from the first Major League movie in those road grays.
In the picture of Shinjo’s shoes, it looks like he’s got some sort of elastic band wrapped around the bottom of his spikes (much like the way soccer guys tie wrap their laces around their shoes). link
The message on these shoes, before anyone asks, seems to be “æŠ-票ã–ã¦ãÂÂã‚ŒãŸã¿んãªã«感謔, or “thanks to everyone who voted for me”.
Shinjo really enjoyed his final all-star game, didn’t he?
Jeff, that isn’t the dot-matrix design of Nike. It’s just the way his uni is designed.
The horrible part of the “Yankee hair rule” is that other teams have taken it as their own, like my beloved O’s. I remember when the O’s had great hair and won games:

The Fighters have been wearing those shoulders ever since they moved to Sapporo a few years ago. (Before that, they had orange-and-blue uniforms that looked remarkably like what the Padres were wearing then.)
The Nike abomination is right next to that guy, though. Since Nike began supplying uniforms to the Seibu Lions, they’ve switched to these hideous monstrosities that are link. They also have three different typefaces for home, visitor, and alternate (which is their traditional white home jersey).
(Here’s another shot where you can see a staffer wearing link.
And of course the Nike logo is dislpayed prominently on all of them!
The Japanese anime characters name is, Piccolo, an alien on the popular kids show, Dragon Ball Z.
I’ve missed the boat . . . is Shinjo coming to MLB next season?
Buffalo Sabres are holding a 4pm press conference today regarding their uniforms.
Ah. I wasn’t implying that Nike actually did that uniform, rather it just reminded me of those hideous VT, Florida, and Miami (anyone else?) football uniforms where one shoulder was a different color than the other. (not to mention the undershirts with mismatched colored sleeves.)
Shinjo is retiring after this season, in part to focus on a career in modeling. So sayeth the almighty link
That video of his first at bat is the best thing I’ve seen in a long time. Where else can you see
A: Someone swing so hard that he spins himself around and falls over
B: A wild pitch that lands about three rows up in the stands
C: The message “Never mind what I do, fan is my treasure” on a belt buckle
D: Crazy Japanese infields that have no lanes, just little dirt diamonds around each base
E: Someone striking a pose on top of second base
Great find.
msmail, I totally agree with you. I think the US needs to watch that and take that approach with the allstar game. Have fun with it, don’t make the World Series home field. John Kruk and Randy Johnson anyone?? That’s good stuff.
I wouldn’t say paint your face green or wear a belt buckle like that but… let’s see our favorites relax and have a good time.
that’s a shame, because he looks like Clue Heywood from the first Major League movie in those road grays.
id say he looks more like the relief pitcher “Blackout” something or other from Little Big League. Great movie gowing up carny lansford appearance and Ken Griffey JR gets done in with the hidden ball
Shinjo’s look is just plain ugly. Wow.
Why can’t our TV be as awesome as Japanese TV?
In the video of Shinjo making the diving catch it appears his scrolling buckle caused him to smash his head into the turf. It looks like it got caught as he was diving.
Also loved how he made a show of turning his buckle on during the first at bat, retucking his shirt and everything.
Shouldn’t Antione Winfield be wearing a cup anyway? Or is this just a promo picture in the Vikings new uniforms?
I’ve heard that football players don’t wear cups anymore. Apparently they don’t link anymore either.
I know that I am in the minority, but I hated the John Kruk/Randy Johnson performance from the All-Star Game a few years back. It was so dorky. While I want the players to have fun and do not desire to see a repeat of Pete Rose ruining Ray Fosse’s career, I enjoy seeing the game played with a desire to win.
The NBA, NFL and NHL games are jokes, and I would hate to see baseball’s gem degenerate into corny sight gags and players who think that they are comedians.
Man, I remember when Shinjo was on the Mets for a couple of different tours of duty, and the only thing he did there was wear bright orange wrist bands that covered almost his entire forearm. How exactly do you say “Style over substance” in Japanese?

my first year as a college football player in 99 everyone got two DUKE’s (brand) when we came into camp. the next year nothing. The athletic department people said that they couldn’t buy them for us anymore because they didn’t purchase sports bras for the girls sports. it was a sad day. tittle IX kills mens sports again.
Shouldn’t Antione Winfield be wearing a cup anyway? Or is this just a promo picture in the Vikings new uniforms?
Its not about title 9 or anything like that.
Hardly anybody wears a cup for football anymore. And not many wear jocks, they instead wear compression shorts
Sal Fasano can (and still does) have his ‘stache. The Yankee rule stipulates that the player must be cleanly groomed, not cleanly shaven. He can even have his longer hair, he just cant look some scumbag on a street corner. Hes a classic looking catcher, very Munson-esque
link
Shinjo should get a job at Chachki’s…he’s got some strong flare!
link works, but should say Thurm instead of Thrum…
D’oh.
Fasano still has a stache, but not “the” stache. Look at the picture I posted above (#9). It’s simply a common lip warmer now that it has no wraparound.
Shinjo WAS in MLB. At least, they SAY he was in the outfield here in SF. I know he had massive orange wristbands, but I don’t recall he brought his batting average or skills with him..which is why he is an EX Giant.
technically, fasano could’ve kept the fu-manchu if he trimmed it to a “neat” length… munson sported the fu-man in the latter years of his life/career….
the one time steinbrenner allowed goatees in the mid-90’s (94 I believe)… don mattingly wore the goat in a series in seattle.. the yanks got swept, and steinbrenner ordered the goatee gone…
for the yankee “hate” on the board (drew) … yanks never went the distance that marge schott did in cincy with the no facial hair whatsoever rule…
willie randolph has carried that grooming concept to the mets these past two seasons as well….

(Yes, I’m sure your question was rhetorical, but something tells me we’re going to need these two phrases the more we discuss sports uniforms!)

I’m not 100% on this, but Girardi might have taken it to the marlins as well. but of course, lets just bash the yankees (who, by the way, are now in first place for the AL wild card, just to rub it in to all the haters.)
In response to your offcenter lacing complaint I read yesterday, David, I think that link is link and looks link! I’m a big fan of link in link.
What’s with the 2 on link? It looks quite thin on top to me, like they squeezed it in.
Here’s a thought: What if the link actually wore link? How seriously cool would that be? Though maybe link with the link.
Check this out: link
Randolph has loosed up on the facial hair rule this year. Last year no one was allowed Goatees (Piazza was clean shaven), this year half the team has goatees.
Turning Japanese… nice one, Paul.

None of the guys on the Marlins are old enough to grow facial hair so Girardi doesn’t have a policy.
Did anyone notice that Ray Durham had his name printed on the back of his helmet like the lacrosse players did last weekend….sorry no pic :(

Sorry, Paul, that we didn’t pick it up, but while I had heard of the song, “Turning Japanese”, the album, according to link was released in 1980. I was 3 years old when that happened. Sorry.
As for the cup discussion, being of the “younger” generation, born in 1977, I had worn an atheletic supporter only once in my life. I wore cups all the time when I played baseball to the age of 17 and when I played football until I went to college. The 1 year in college that I did play, the cup was more of a pain in the ass than anything else.
for the yankee “hate” on the board (drew) … yanks never went the distance that marge schott did in cincy with the no facial hair whatsoever rule…
The Reds no facial hair policy existed LONG before Marge Schott bought the team. Among the reasons that Ross Grimsley was traded by the Reds was his bitterness over being forced to groom himself to a reasonable degree.
thanks for the correction on the reds robert e… didn’t know it preceded schottsie…
as for jocks and cups… you would be aghast at the attitude of today’s HS football players.. I remember my first year of coaching… when I noticed noone was wearing a cup I shouted “jesus aren’t any of you guys worried about having families someday??!!??”.. five of them replied, “coach batt, we’ve already got kids!!” opened my eyes pretty wide… they don’t think they’ll ever get a direct shot… or its too constricting… or they don’t run as fast…
more on my baseball team wear cups than on my football team!!! lots of “sopranos” walking the halls during the fall….
Although I enjoy fun on the field, I hope the MLB All-Star Game never turns into to anything like that. I like seeing the best do their thing, if we want to see people dress like comic-book characters and focus on grandstanding, why have All-Stars do it? Let’em play, and leave the grandstanding to overpaid and underachieving wide receivers.
BT
just checked out the sabre website.. they announced that their classic original logo/uniform will be the third jersey this season.. to be worn 15 times… the other monstocities the other 26….
sabre uni announcement
guess I need to learn how to link a website…
anyhow… I give the “new” look 1 season before the third jerseys become permanent!!
I love how the Sabres are already on the defensive about their new slug unis.
“We are still committed and enthusiastic about our new uniform and believe that fans will embrace it once they have a chance to actually see it.”
Yeah, right.

15 games with the 3rd uni? That’s more than 1/3 of the home games during the regular season… they might as well just use them the entire season!
It’s a good thing they don’t wear belts in basketball anymore, or those evil LED buckles would be standard practice. It was bad enough having Ron Artest talk about his (terrible) rap album or bash the Pacers’ management without having to read it on a message scroll…
As for the lack of cups, I definitely wore one as a little league catcher and I couldn’t imagine life without it. Maybe they don’t wear them anymore because the ‘roids have shrunk their manhood so much…
I once was a catcher myself at the youth level. In the leagues I played in, the cup was a requirement for a catcher but optional to anyone else. There are very few scenarios (most freak accidents) that would require a cup. How often do those happen?
In football, I ditched the cup quickly. Even as a lineman I didn’t feel I needed it. The one warning we received was from our JV coach about wearing boxers to practice, even games. He said he saw a player wearing boxers literally get his balls in a twist. Without really requiring it, everyone then wore boxer-briefs or tighty-whiteys.
keeping with the Bad News Bears reference from yesterday…
Coach Morris Buttermaker: [handing out cups and supporters to the boys] There is one thing I forgot to tell you guys. It’s a legal rule: cups and supporters.
[everyone complains]
Coach Morris Buttermaker: Gotta be worn at all times.
[more complaints]
Coach Morris Buttermaker: Either you wear ’em or you don’t wear ’em and you don’t play.
Jose Agilar: A?Yo no me voy a poner esto! A?Esto duele!
[“I’m not going to wear this! It hurts!”]
Coach Morris Buttermaker: What? What are you saying?
Ogilvie: I’ve been brushing up on my Spanish of late, and I think he is saying something about, you know, his being Catholic, and it’s a sin.
When I was in high school, most everyone wore cups. I, myself, have only been hit in the cup twice in all my years of football and baseball. The one time in baseball was when I was catching and the one time football was during a tackle drill when they were having other lineman tackle lineman. Got a helmet directly there, but was wearing a cup. So, no problem. I think the “incidents” or “accidents” where you would really need a cup are pretty rare. I would not play real competitive sports today without a cup though.
I would never play baseball without a cup. When i was catching a batter tipped the ball off the plate, back up into my cup-cracking the cup(very painful) so im a pro-cup guy. But, I never wore one while playing football, just never was comfortable with one.
I never wore a cup playing soccer, and only witnessed one injury to a player in that sensitive place. A football player at my school, though, sans cup, ended up with one of his “boys” driven inside of him…not a particularly nice thought.
Does anyone know why the umpire in Shinjo’s first clip is carrying a large duffel bag?
Baseball I always wore a cup. I never did in soccer, and its a good thing. I saw a guy back when I was 16 or so have a foot come right from the side groin high and the foot caught on to the cup and moved it, and what was inside it, a significantly painful distance. Guy was on the ground howling for what seemed like forever.
I played 2nd base in high school. ALWAYS wore a cup. I think you’d have to be crazy not to wear one in the infield.
I played lacrosse in high school and didn’t wear a cup for the first year or two because I was just uncomfortable with the whole idea. Eww! Then one day at practice a guy took a ball in the nuts–I don’t know if you could design a more efficient weapon for inflicting testicular pain than a lacrosse ball–and I’m pretty sure that I wasn’t the only one who went right out and bought himself a cup that night.
As with most safety devices, I got used to it pretty quickly and before long I couldn’t imagine not using one. I played through college and I’m pretty sure I never suited up again without full protection: helmet, gloves, elbow pads, shoulder pads, rib pads, mouth peice, and cup. Well, maybe I forewent the shoulderpads and rib pads at practice once in a while. But if I was wearing the helmet, I was wearing the cup.
Man, seeing that picture of Winfield was a horrible reminder that my Vikes are going to be wearing those hideous new unis this year. They ruined a classic look with their Arizona Cardinals look-alikes. I’ve been searching online for Viking fans backlash over the new unis -similar to what Sabres fans have done- but unfortunately I can’t find any. Are there any other Vikes fans in here who want to vomit every time they see the new unis?
Btw, I’m pretty sure that Winfield pic is one of their promo pics when they revealed the unis, so that’s probably why he let the lizard loose.
no one is asking the real question about shinjo…how did he ever make an all-star game? i don’t remember japanese baseball being in that much disarray that wack ass shinjo can be one of the game’s elite. did i mention im a giants fan who’s still bitter about 2002? anyway he’s a goon. move on.
interesting to note that the padres are wearing their full road-khakis tonight at colorado…. first time in weeks…
guess the black rockies and the blue padres would have made things tough on plays at second base, not to metion the eyes!!!

Aside from the hideous uniform, Antoine Winfield is also wearing black cleats. Are the Vikes switching to black cleats this year? And I think I heard on ESPN that Edgerrin James convinced Denny Green to have the Cardinals swich to black cleats as well. The movement gains some new converts!

Re: Shinjo
This guy is a character, and I don’t fault him. The look’s not for everyone, but there’s room for a few colorful characters in every sport. As for how he got into the game – fans are tools, democracy’s overrated. Fan voting got him in, if the message on the shoes is accurate. He’s a big star on his farewell tour, not hard to believe he’d get in on his name power alone. Players have done a lot worse than hit .263-12-43 and still have been voted in, I think
Personally I thought the collared undershirt look was fantastic, and I adopted it for a softball doubleheader in late spring.
Anyone familiar with NPB know why in those videos the announcer seemed to say “Round 1” in describing the game? Are there several exhibition all-star games? That might make sense as to why it’s more laid back and friendly.

I’m not saying it’s “hip” to know all the songs on the Charlie’s Angels soundtrack, I’m just saying that “Turning Japanese” is not exactly an obscure song; it hasn’t lost its popularity. I was simply stating that youth isn’t an excuse for the lack of knowledge of the song.

Yes, in Japan, they play 2 All-Star Games. Usually, one in a Central League stadium and the other in the Pacific League stadium.
