The opponent is a tough call. ABA teams got to play NBA teams in preseason for a while, so that could be an NBA opponent with a nameless jersey. Or it could be an ABA team using nameless jerseys in preseason.

“Here’s a mid-1970s shot of Moses Malone playing for the ABA’s Utah Stars. Not sure who the opposing team is, but it looks like a color-vs.-color game.”

    There’s no link.

“BC Lions will wear an Indigenous-themed helmet logo for their Sept. 30 game against the Ottawa Redblacks. Both teams will also wear orange spatting for Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation holiday”

The Lions have worn their orange pants exclusively on the road with their white jerseys this year. I would bet we see the Lions go orange over orange at home for the first time this year on Sept. 30.

I’m definitely interested in seeing what the Sharks do with their Reverse Retro jersey. The 1974-76 Golden Seals’ unis are among the most unique ever seen in the NHL, with the looped shoulder stripes. The big question is, will they half-ass it, or will they actually incorporate the loops into the underarm panels?

This for sure. Can’t believe that in an era where everything is for sale, the Chiefs and Snickers didn’t work something out.

Black-on-black lettering should be the exclusive property of the San Antonio Spurs. They owned that look; the new teams are just pretenders.

Would be nice to see the Chiefs break out the gray facemasks for the opener too. Why not?
If the Chargers opt for the yellow pants, this will be one good looking game!

Regarding the CFB Hall of Fame item, as has been documented on this very site many times, jerseys are often recycled for many seasons before being taken out of service. The jersey in question very well could’ve been worn in 1992 and 1996.

The story about Celtic’s sponsor “giving up” their usual space for Celtic’s charity is a bit disingenuous. Betting sponsors are banned in many European countries, so clubs from the UK often have to find a workaround for away games in European competitions.

Calling Wawa a “Pennsylvania-based convenience chain” is a little like calling carbon “an element found in the human body”. Wawa is somewhere between a religion and a way of life and the actual essence of life for some of us… LOL

    Re: Molina’s commemorative mask

What are the rules on catcher’s helmet designs? I remember when the hockey style ones were introduced, they had more intricate logos/designs on them (link), but I thought there was a rule against that now. I can’t recall anything more intricate than this (link) in recent years.

You’re absolutely correct. Apparently custom paint jobs were banned after the 2012 season, with only two players (John Buck and Gregg Zaun) being *grandfathered* in. From this article: (link)

Wilson, which supplies the catcher’s masks in MLB, has now banned personalized art on the equipment. But Buck and fellow backstop Gregg Zaun, who both had an artist paint their mask before the Wilson ruling, were allowed to continue the practice because they auction the items off to fund their children’s charities. Zaun hasn’t played in the majors since 2010, making Buck the only member of a most exclusive club.

Apparently NOSCAE (the independent organization that sets the equipment safety standards) now voids their certification if the helmet has been modified in any way beyond factory standards. All the hockey-style helmet manufacturers have the same restrictions.
