Sunday Morning Uni Watch

Posted in:

A good Sunday Morning, Uni Wathers, and welcome to your Sunday Morning Uni Watch, Conference Championship Edition. Since we’ve many fewer games this weekend, your “normal” SMUW schedule will be slightly modified. Today we’ll include the Power 5 trackers with the main SMUW post, and Jimmer will still have his own Five and One (should be very interesting with so few games to pick from — with Championship Weekend you’d assume most schools would wear their “Sunday Best” as it were…) but this isn’t your pappy’s NC2A anymore either. Unfortunately I was away from home at a curling tourney most of yesterday (and didn’t fare particularly well either), so I won’t have a ticker for you later today.

Normally, with SMUW I “pick” a game to feature and then talk a bit about the unis, but all I have to say is, “Damn Ugga and Bayou Bengal looked good yesterday.” Such a beautiful matchup. I caught a few glimpses of this game at yesterday’s bonspiel and while the score was pretty ugly, the game most certainly was not.

And now, time to turn this over to the one and only Terry Duroncelet, Jr., who will bring you your…

Championship Week, where the FOMO is greater than the crypto rush of last year for many teams, and are left to live vicariously through –sometimes– their mortal rivals. It’s also, understandably, the most chill full weekend of the regular season, before good ol’ A/N next week. This’ll be quick and only slightly-dirty, so let’s get right into it.

From Friday:

• USC/Utah: You would think that this game would be too heavy on the red, but this somehow works out. I think this is one of Utah’s top 2 road looks (this being the other).

From Saturday:

• Georgia/LSU: Call LSU a Rolls-Royce, because they ran out of gas too soon (as if last week’s showing wasn’t evident enough). Oh well, at least they looked good (as did Georgia).

• TCU/Kansas State: There’s a wearing-black-to-your-own-funeral joke here somewhere, because I was NOT expecting them to fall to Kansas State (not to slight K-State of course), but here we are. Also, how about the in-and-out field swap at Jerryworld?

• Michigan/Purdue: Alright, Michigan needs to make like the fats in old chocolate, and separate themselves from those DAMN NAVY PANTSWHAT!!! IS WRONG!!! WITH THIS!!! Shameful.

• North Carolina/Clemson: Perhaps the most visually-interesting game from the weekend. Okay, DEFINITELY the most visually-interesting game from the weekend. The ACC has similar energy to the SEC when it comes to their member schools’ team colors. This game looks like if the slush menu at Sonic became sentient and fielded football teams. This pairing also works in that blue and orange are opposite each other on the color spectrum, so naturally they go together. Contrast Matters: Summer Sugar Rush Edition (might as well be Summer with these hideous temperatures in Louisiana ATM).

And with THAT, that puts a bow (or at least selects the ribbon) on the 2022 regular season. Army/Navy is next week, and then WE GO BOWLING. Until then, thank you guys SO MUCH for another excellent college football season, and I’ll see you in a few weeks. Later!

Thanks TJ! Another great season in the books — and of course Terry will be back to wrap up every Bowl game through the end of the BCS Final.

Canadian University Uni Watching, a codicil

New for 2022 is Canadian University Uni Watcher Wade Heidt, who has joined the SMUW crew this year and will bring us some looks at three-down, 110-yard Canadian university football from up north. That’s Wade to the right side of your screen (you can even click to enlarge). The shirt Wade is wearing was created by the one and only Wafflebored!

Enjoy!

Canadian University Uni Watch
by Wade Heidt

The Canadian university football season is of course over. Except for one gave which happened Saturday night. I was not going to pay any mind to it but it ended up being uniform noteworthy. It was colour vs. colour.

Shrum Bowl

The Canadian university football season ended with the Vanier Cup last Saturday.  However, there was still one game left to cap off the season. With the support of the CFL’s BC Lions, the Shrum Bowl returned after a 12-year absence. The game was contested on Friday night.

The Shrum Bowl is a rivalry game between two Metro Vancouver schools. The University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU). UBC competes with Canadian schools in U Sports.  SFU is part of NCAA Division II and competes against U.S. schools.

The hosting duties alternate between the schools. SFU hosted this year, so the game was played using American rules and an American-sized football field. I suppose this is Canadian university uniform watching American rules style!

Notable uniform-wise as this game was colour vs. colour! Below seasonal and cold temperatures for Metro Vancouver on Friday. The SFU Red Leafs wearing their red over red combo at home. The UBC Thunderbirds visiting the Burnaby Mountain campus wearing navy over navy.

UBC won the Shrum Bowl! This is commendable considering UBC had to adjust to playing American rules for this game.  Of course, when SFU visits UBC for next season’s game, SFU will need to adjust and play Canadian rules.

Guess The Game From The Uniform

Based on the suggestion of long-time reader/contributor Jimmy Corcoran, we’ve introduced a new “game” on Uni Watch, which is similar to the popular “Guess the Game from the Scoreboard” (GTGFTS), only this one asked readers to identify the game based on the uniforms worn by teams.

Like GTGFTS, readers will be asked to guess the date, location and final score of the game from the clues provided in the photo. Sometimes the game should be somewhat easy to ascertain, while in other instances, it might be quite difficult. There will usually be a visual clue (something odd or unique to one or both of the uniforms) that will make a positive identification of one and only one game possible. Other times, there may be something significant about the game in question, like the last time a particular uniform was ever worn (one of Jimmy’s original suggestions). It’s up to YOU to figure out the game and date.

Today’s GTGFTU comes from Christopher Hickey.

Good luck and please post your guess/answer in the comments below.

And finally...

…that’s it for the SMUW Championship Edition. Big thanks again to TJ (and Wade, Rex, Dennis, Ethan and James). Jimmer Vilk’s Five and One will be published at 8:00 am EST, and — although there is no ticker today — I will have an additional piece later today featuring Jonah Ward, who has a pretty cool Football x Football crossover, and with the World Cup now in the knockout stage, it’s pretty timely too. So be sure to check back for that one!

Everyone have a great week and I’ll catch you next Saturday.

Peace,

PH

You completely ignored the Mountain West title game at Boise St. How can you leave out that blue field? Fresno State’s red & white unis looked great on that field. As for Boise State’s unis, all blue on that blue field, they need some type of contrast. White pants?

I was at that Reds-Phillies game. It was my son’s first game (He was 11 and a half months old.). It was brutally hot-100 degrees. Had to be a lot hotter than that on the field. We were fortunately in the shade in right field. The Phils also wore throwbacks-1948 unis-rookie season of 2 Hall of Famers (Ashburn and Roberts). I got a 1948 replica cap for a Father’s Day giveaway which is long gone. Of course the Phils lost.

    Took a donut-hole.

Oh fer three. Should have won our second match (which would have greatly impacted future games, as we’ve have been in a different flight) which we lost on our skip’s last stone. Never recovered from that.

Oh well. It was fun and good camaraderie, and in the end, that’s more important. Still would have been nice to win the very winnable game tho.

    Terry-
I know we still have bowl season, and you already know how much I love you, but let me say thanks for another outstanding effort this year. Honestly, you absolutely kill it every week every year.

    Hi Patrick,

Shrum Bowl was not colour vs. colour. Not a regular thing. First Shrum Bowl in 1967 and the last one before this was 2010. The game got sidetracked when SFU became an NCAA Division II school.

I really loved Utah’s unis until I realized that all three stripes ( helmet / sleeves / pants ) are different. I can’t unsee it and I hate it now.

I watched a ton of Conference Championship football this weekend, from the Big Ten to the SWAC and everything in between and I could have sworn that there was some sort of College Football Conference Championship mandatory full mono color uniform decree sent down from NCAA HQ… it seemed way to coordinated to be random but maybe it was a coincidence, who knows? Anyone else know what I’m talking about?

Phil, were you in Charlotte at the Fighting Hornet? If so, I missed ya! Would’ve been glad to buy you a drink. It was my first bonspiel ever this weekend. Lots of fun
