Five And One for College Football Week 0/1

Jimmer Vilk’s 5 & 1

Welcome to the Five and One for 2022!

After more than a decade in hiatus, Jim Vilk (the original “5 & 1” decider) returned! And he’s back again for 2022. The concept of the Five and One is simple: Jim will pick HIS 5 best looking/1 awful matchup, and occasionally have some honorable mentions (both good and bad). You may agree and you may disagree — these are, after all, just opinions and everyone has one. Feel free to let him know what you think in the comments section.

This season, Jimmer may also be slightly changing up the Five and One — there will still be five “good looking” and one not-so-good games, but rather than ranking his top five and worst one, they may be given “categories” (which can change week to week). Just a little somethin-somethin’ to shake things up a bit!

If you have a game you feel is “worthy” of consideration for the 5 & 1, please either post it in the comments below or tweet Mr. Vilk @JVfromOhio.

Here’s today’s 5 & 1:

Hi! How was your off-season? Mine was… different, so I think I’m going to extend that feeling and shake up the lists a bit. A number of you already know my tastes (and those who don’t can get an idea from my best and worst picks). So, instead of a straight Top Five, I’m going to feature Five Good Things along with the dreaded &1. The Five Good Things probably won’t be the same each week, and some weeks I may throw back and do a Top Five. We’ll see how it goes. If you’d prefer a regular Top Five, let me know and I can go back to that next weekend.

__________

5. The Best Looking “We Don’t Need A Color TV For This Game” Matchup:

Louisiana Tech/Missouri

Unfortunately, the trend of whiteout vs blackout isn’t going away anytime soon, and yet there are some enjoyable looks like this one.

__________

4. The Surprisingly Good Matchup Of The Week:

Duquesne/Florida State

Haven’t been a fan of the Dukes’ latest redesign, but the red pants put this Week 0 (I’m Calling It) Week 1-AA game on my radar.

__________

3. The “Little Things Mean a Lot” Matchup:

Bethune Cookman/Miami (Fla.)

That yellow trim around BCU’s numbers turned a nice looking game into a really nice looking game.

__________

2. The “Optimal Contrast” Matchup:

Troy/Ole Miss

With a little bit of script thrown in for good measure!

__________

1. Simply The Best:

Temple/Duke

I picked on the Owls a lot last year, and while they can look very bad at times, they can look SO good too.

__________

&1

Penn State/Purdue

What else can I say but ZZZZZZZZZZZZ…

See you tomorrow!

I disagree with the temple look for one reason and it has nothing to do with their look but the duke look, if duke wears blue or black hat go ahead with white but since they whore white you should’ve worn the cherry helmet

I so very much prefer the cherry helmet.
    Still looked good, though.

Also, they’re one of the few teams wearing huge properly-sized back numbers, so when they look good I like to show them off.

Penn State can bring its look into the 20th century by now. Joe is gone. Time for a break with tradition, they have a great modern lion logo in their repertoire. Check their hockey sweaters.

They chipmunk logo was added to the color – that’s not enough modernization?

Even something simple that they’ve used in their history – blue pant stripe, blue border in the sleeves and neckline, numbers on the helmets. Anything to break up the visual boredom of their current road look.

I can fix Penn State very easily.
Bring back the contrasting collar and sleeve trim.
    Blue road pants.
    Maybe helmet numbers.
    Done.

    Thanks!
I thought people would enjoy this better than a straight Top Five, where there would have been three games with white/white/red unis. It’s good to mess with things every now and then.

We were off last weekend, so we caught up today.
Tomorrow we cover this week’s games.
