It wasn’t exactly billed as the matchup of the century, but that Notre Dame vs. Miami was a pretty good looking game, no? Look at that splash and tell me that doesn’t have “TOP 5” potential.
What’s that…find a shot of the golden domers that shows what they look like from the left side? Ouch. Seriously, WTF are they thinking at adidas? Or at ND? These one-offs are really just making a mockery of the college game.
That was just ONE of the many crazy (and often awful) uniforms trotted out during week six of the NCAAFB season, and my buddy, and our Sunday Morning Uni Watch quarterback Terry Duroncelet will bring you (hopefully — there’s a LOT of games out there) all the action from yesterday.
I now turn this over to TJ as he takes us through our…
Sunday Morning Uni Watch

This past Saturday was… *Lars Ulrich voice to himself* I need to choose my words carefully here… not necessarily one you would want to remember from a uni-standpoint. At least four teams went BFBS, and I could go on all day about Notre Dame. Let’s sift through what I found in week 6…
• Kentucky wore mono-black against Mississippi State. Gross. Even worse was the fact that they wore the white helmets with that costume.
• The Rutgers SCARLET Knights decided to play as the EBONY Knights against UConn. All of the Rutgers players had “F.A.M.I.L.Y” on the back of their jerseys (stands for “Forget About Me I Love You”). Notice something wrong with that photo? How ’bout now? Yup. Huge thanks to Griffin Whitmer for the second-to-last photo, and to Phil for the last link.
• Air Force wore mono-black against Navy. As ugly as they were, one good thing about them was that they were using a real block font, instead of that weak block font that they (and Navy) usually use. The NOBs looked to have carried the names of a fighter aircraft on each back. Some had “F-22 RAPTOR”, some had “B-2 SPIRIT“, and those were all I could find. The shoulders have sort of a houndstooth thing going on, but the pattern is made up of little stealth fighters. That pattern was also integrated in the side panels of the pants and on the helmet, which also had a freaky helmet stripe. Also in that game, Navy put aside their usual gold pants in favor of navy pants with white belts. Probably last year’s Nike Pro Combat pants. Not a bad look. My thanks to Phil for the B-2 SPIRIT gif. • The Duke Blue Devils like to dress as the BLACK Devils. Obviously, they should dress as the BLUE Devils. Looks like the team decided to split the difference on Saturday. Lame, but I suppose it could be worse.
• Maryland broke out some new black helmets and black pants that I haven’t heard of or seen when they unveiled their new uniforms during the Summer. I actually like this look. Watching the Maryland/Wake Forest game, the yellow-and-black checker pattern on the black pants and red jerseys sorts make it look like the Terps are running around with LEDs stuck to them.
Let’s move on to the other end of the color spectrum…
• Boise State went full-Stormtrooper against Southern Miss.
• It was a regular dispute between a Stormtrooper and Darth Vader. That’s Vandy vs. Mizzou. Vanderbilt went full-Stormtrooper for *I think* the second time this season. I didn’t catch this the first time they went all-white in week 2, so here’s a make-up for it.
• North Carolina not only wore their white helmets for the first time this season against Virginia Tech, but they also wore white at home! I’m an instant fan of this look, but I still with that VT would wear their maroon/orange/maroon striped pants, and just retire the solid white pants. The latter just makes the uniform look incomplete. Speaking of white pants, while I was looking for pictures, I stumbled across this. Not to sound racist, but I would’ve gone with dark mannequins, like from the Nike/NFL event back in April. The white mannequin looks like he isn’t really wearing anything below his jersey. Another thing that I found from that game was this.
• Keeping with the white theme, someone on the Big Ten Network website noticed Michigan’s piping inconsistencies on their road tops, which was mentioned on Uni Watch not too long ago. Credit to Brent Yarina, who not only sent the link, but actually wrote that article.
And now for all of the other colors and stuff in between…
• Ryan Bohannon sent in this screengrab and says “Looks like CBS is still using the old style typeface for the Florida Gators. This screen grab was going into a commercial during the 4th qtr”.
• Saw this during the LSU/Florida game. Oh Celestia, why? The blue side looks more navy than royal to me.
• Toledo wore matte navy helmets with a pink rocket logo on one side and a pink T.V. number on the other. The floor is open to “Hole Toledo!” jokes as of now. That was only a small portion of the pink accessories that college teams/players wore over the weekend.
• Notre Dame and Miami played in the Shamrock Series, and the Fighting Irish came out in this. Doesn’t look so bad from the right, but when you get to the left, I just have to say… yeah. To be honest, I really liked the numbers, but that’s about it. Everything else was either more of the same compared to their usual uniform, or a case of an imbalance being out of balance.
Pretty sure that some of those uniforms gave you readers indigestion, so here’s a video of a red panda to make up for it. See you next week ^_^

More on those ND costumes…
For this small segment, guest writer Kenny Ocker, who used to post in the comments often (as the “Hemogoblin”), is back. You older readers may remember this outstanding interview Kenny performed for UW waaaaaaay back in 2009. Well, he is making another guest appearance, featuring his take on the ‘uniforms’ worn by Notre Dame last evening. Kenny actually penned this prior to the game, but it’s still quite relevant. So here I was, minding my own business, editing stories at work Friday night, and this feature on Adidas America designer Mark Daniels came across my desk. Awesome! Something uni-centric!
And then I was reminded of why this story was written.
WHY DOES THIS EXIST? MY EYES! MY EYES!
But this story actually did a good job of explaining why these uniforms exist, even if I had forgotten about them in the two months since they had been announced. Case in point:
“As the Facebook comments would come in,” said Daniels, 42. “I’d look at the faces of the people making the comment. Positive comments, young person. Negative comments, usually somebody older than me.”
So, I’m to blame — and not just because I’m a recent Oregon grad. The average Uni Watcher needs to remember why so many schools are doing this: Kids think it’s cool. Even if we don’t understand, we’re not really the target audience. (At age 22, I would be, but I work at a newspaper and think the best look Oregon has had in the last five years was this one. I already have a batch of gray hairs. I don’t count.) But recruits dig this stuff, and that’s how you build a winning football program.
But if you’re looking for someone official to blame, the writer says Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick, assistant AD Jim Fraleigh, coach Brian Kelly and equipment manager Ryan Grooms were all involved in the process. On second thought, don’t blame the equipment manager, because equipment managers are pretty much unilaterally cool people, many of whom read this esteemed site. My point is, this is a top-to-bottom epidemic, one that has been consuming our fall Saturdays for more than a decade.
Just remember: If you want your team to be successful on Saturdays, sadly, you better be rooting for your team to hop aboard the uniform innovation train, even if you think it looks ugly. You know what looks even worse? Losing to a 1-AA school in really clean, traditional uniforms.

2012 Duck Tracker…
The sixth game of the 2012 Ducks season had the Duckies hosting (and kicking ass) against Washiington. So they went yellow/green/BLACK. UGH! That yellow dome and green top are awesome, and they could have worn ANY color pants (obviously, they couldn’t repeat the yellow they wore in week one) but BLACK and that would have looked better. But this was, dare I say…horrid?

Uni Tweaks Concepts
We have another new set of tweaks, er…concepts today. After discussion with a number of readers, it’s probably more apropos to call most of the reader submissions “concepts” rather than tweaks. So that’s that.
So if you’ve concept for any sport, or just a tweak or wholesale revision, send them my way.
Please do try to keep your descriptions to ~50 words (give or take) per image — if you have three uniform concepts in one image, then obviously, you can go a little over, but no novels, OK? OK!. You guys have usually been good with keeping the descriptions pretty short, and I thank you for that.

I am a huge Auburn athletics fan, and really got into the baseball team this year. If anyone has seen the current unis, they know they arent very good. So I decided to have some fun and redesign them. My first (and only) Auburn baseball game I’ve gone to was the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Al earlier this year. LOVED the throwback unis they wore in the game. That was a must in my new set — Nothing is different about this one from the real unis:
Then I wanted to go back to the Auburn baseball roots, the Bo Jackson and then Tim Hudson era. I went with a very simple, classic look for the Hudson-era unis:
I had a lot of fun making this Bo-era uni, which was inspired from this picture of Bo:
Now I needed some color jerseys. I really liked the real-life orange ‘Tigers’ uni from the early ’00s, so, here it is. And finally I went a little off-kilter with this blue top. After searching for some inspiration, I found a picture of the Virginia Tech team doing their own Astro’s Tequilla Sunrise uni. I also found a picture of Auburn’s club hockey team, and thought “What the heck?” and made this:

Catherine Ryan’s 5 & 1
The five and one has been a staple of Uni Watch for three years, usually ably administered by Jim Vilk. But he got old and tired, so we needed someone young and fresh. And we’ve found that someone in this year’s new 5 & 1 decider…Catherine Ryan.
Catherine’s settling into the 5 & 1 role quite nicely, although a number of you still disagree with her — and that’s ok, because it’s all opinion anyway. I think she’s doing a fine job. So let’s see what is on tap for this week:
Happy Sunday, UniWatchers! I know I get some guff about some of my random selections but some of you may be happy to see that I went a little mainstream this week! I even shocked myself! Enjoy!
5. Washington State v. Oregon State: I know, I know. Both teams in white pants. I’m sorry. I’m a fan of Oregon State’s orange tops though. Washington State looked good in the all whites. Overall, a good game.
4. Washington v. Oregon: I wanted to hate this. But I could not. I also loved this. I never thought I would put Oregon in here. Guess there is a first time for everything!
3. Oklahoma v. Texas Tech: I guess you could say I am softening to the all-whites. Also, I have found there is something neat about watching all-white v. all-color. It’s the simple things in life!
2. UCLA v. California: I am normally terribly underwhelmed/bored with Cal’s unis but they were pretty neat. UCLA wore their white tops.
1. Michigan State v. Indiana: I thought this game was great. If you caught the game on TV, you can probably attest to how awesome it looked. Overall, just a really great game to catch and the rivalry gave it the extra edge in my countdown!
+1 Miami v. Notre Dame: I can’t remember where I heard it but I read a comment a few weeks back that said the ND helmet looked like a leprechaun defecating into the ear hole of the helmet. Sorry, can’t shake that imagery.

Forget About Me I Love Y
Who doesn’t love Y? It’s a very a useful letter.
If you work with centered type, eventually you’ll run into punctuation at the end of a word or phrase. And it mucks things up. Adding that dot at the end, even though everything is centered, will make it look like the type is off to the left because visually letters carry a lot more weight. So you can have type that looks like it’s off-center, or you can use a little creative license and omit the final period. (A more creative option is to use bullets in between the letters rather than periods — gets around omitting the period at the end problem).
Or this could just be a mistake.
That’s a fair point. The real mistake is putting that lame crap on the back as a NOB in the first place.
I have never really seen it before or at least noticed it until yesterday’s ND game the a major offensive and defensive player both wore the same number. “5” was wore by 5 Te’o, Manti and 5 Golson, Everett (I think both were captains).
Brian Cushing and John David Booty both wore #10 for USC.
Golson is not a captain, Te’o is.
Another example is Terrelle Pryor and Malcolm Jenkins both sporting #2 for the Buckeyes.
T.J. Ward and Jeremiah Masoli both wore #2 at Oregon at the same time, not too long ago.
With 105 players on rosters before walk-ons, this is altogether not uncommon.
One thing from the Notre Dame game…
When seeing the Irish from the left side, it did make me think that a navy helmet, navy jersey and gold pants with striping might be a pretty look for, say, Pitt.
Or even (wash my mouth out with soap, I know)…Navy.
Navy should be wearing navy pants and jerseys with a white helmet and gold trimmings.
Notre Dame needs to figure out how to make their gold pants the same color as their gold helmets. They should also stick a shamrock on their helmets and wear green jerseys.
I tend to agree on ND’s pants.
As to slapping a shamrock in the helmet and wearing green — absolutely f***ing not.
I like the gold helmets for the Panthers. But it was great to see they broke out the blue pants against Syracuse. The white pants on the road looks like crap.
So there it is …… the young folk love the look of the “cutting edge” jerseys, the old folks don’t, and the young folks are the target demographic. End of story. It’s gonna be wild, more outrageous, more garish that one could ever imagine. Buckle up your seat belts, fellow codgers!
I have to call BS on that notion. I think young people, like old (cough) people, appreciate good design. Period.
I was 12, 13, when I became enamored with uniforms, specifically the NFL jersey. This is around 1972-73. The uniforms were not radical nor were they conventional. They were just designed well. They were, well, unifrom. The patterns made sense. Yet each team was easily identifiable, distinctive.
But, back then I was not the target of massive marketing campaigns. I was not bombarded with Nike logos everywhere. There were no yearly “innovations” I had to keep up with.
I suppose if enough objects are dangled before you, incessantly, relentlessly, you’ll become hypnotized, victimized, and choose the one that screams the loudest.
Appreciate good design? The old saying “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” still rings true. You can call BS on it all you want, but the fact is, you’d be wrong. I say “fact” because clearly it’s working, otherwise it would have faded away.
You developed an eye for style in your youth. It happens that uniform design was much different (read conservative) back then. So, that’s what you were drawn toward.
Today’s youth are drawn toward the uniforms we see now. They consider these uniforms to be “good design”.
Also, there were no bombardments of advertising back then because there was no internet, cable/satellite television, or mainstream worldwide media. Had there been those things, you would have been bombarded. Let’s not act like there was advertising is a new concept.
I get tired of the continual bitching by the older generation (of which I am a member) about the way of the current uniform trends. Just because you don’t like them, doesn’t mean it’s bad design. It means you don’t like them.
Being closer to 30 than 40 I guess I fall in the middle. I can’t really say age plays a roll in it for me. I too just like a good looking design. I do tend to lean more toward modern rather than the classics but think some teams that have worn traditional looks forever look great and some teams wearing the modern looks also can look just as good. For me it just depends on the designs and the teams rather than lumping into the “kids like shiny things” theory. Although I guess it’s more or less true.

Michigan has been using several different cuts of jerseys from Adidas, all up to player preference. And for whatever reason, they can’t keep the design consistent, nor the colors of some of the elements. It makes no sense at all. Some jerseys have piping, some don’t. Some have M’s above the NOB, some don’t. Some of the blues are more royal than navy.
Say what you will about Nike, but they could at least deliver UM a consistent product. For the entirety of the Adidas era, Michigan has been trotting out there with a veritable mishmash of variations. There have even been player complaints about fit, cut, and durability. I know Adidas gave UM an offer we couldn’t refuse, but the results have been disappointing across the board.
Until yesterday Air Force had been unwatchable this season because they’ve played such bad football, but yesterday those costumes hurt the eyes. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

I just saw somebody on the Giants kick return team who had eye pink (instead of eye black). Sadly I don’t have a screen grab or anything. This pink thing has gotten way out of hand.
Do the NFL refs have a new type of font on their shirts today?
I was about to post on this. It appears to be the same font the NFL uses for many of its logos (Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, Playoffs, etc.)
Yep. So it looks like we have THREE variations of NFL ref unis this season:
1) Replacement refs with the numbers only on the back.
2) Normal refs with the position and number on the back as 2006-11.
3) What we’re seeing today.

that font is called Orbit and the NFL has been using that with their own font “Endzone” for their products. Looks like the use of Orbit is new to the ref’s uniforms this year.
And the white capped refs are wearing the pink soutaches, too. How about that!
That font makes officials’ numbers even less readable from the upper deck.

I really disliked the ND uniforms when I first saw the unveiling. I will admit though, I really liked them on the field. Somehow, it all worked.
I also liked the Oregon uniforms. Their opening game uniforms are still the best look they’ve had. Those were some of the best uniforms I’ve ever seen.
What is worse? Pink eyeblack or the fact that the Colts mascot is completely pink? ugghh.
Hey, I didn’t think the Eagles could find a way to make their unis uglier….
I don’t like using the “young viewers/recruiting” excuse for ND’s look yesterday. Alabama, USC, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas have outstanding recruiting success year-in & year-out and on the rare occasion they do a special uniform, they don’t urinate all over their school’s iconic and branding tradition.
Oregon *needed* the uniform angle because it was pretty much all they had. But Notre Dame should be the last school to have to use uniform gimmicks to recruit. That they’ve now started down the road proves how far the program has fallen.
Didn’t USC break out an all-black football uniform a few years ago?
Nope.
How exactly has the program fallen? They’re #6 in the nation with one of the tougher schedules in the country coming into the year. They consistently have one of the highest athlete graduation rates in the country. Don’t hate on Notre Dame just for the sake of it.
If you think ND has, over the past 20 years or so, consistently lived up to their history/reputation/mystique/hype, I’m sure there’s no convincing you otherwise. Five games into a season doesn’t exactly re-establish them as a top-flight on-the-field product.
Statistically, by taking their preseason ranking and the their post season ranking, ND has been the single most overrated team in all of college football for the past 20 years. That’s just a fact. Something like 19 years in the past 20 or so, ND has finished lower at the end of the season than they started.
And a tough schedule? Purdue, Navy, a bad Miami team, and two VASTLY over ranked Michigan schools (I’ve been saying for years that PuntArm stinks and MSU clearly has no offense)? I don’t know what “tough schedule” your talking about, but to me that’s pretty middle of the road. And as for the upcoming games, Oklahoma and USC are the only non-pedestrian teams left on ND’s schedule and I expect them to lose both of those (they’re road games).
And if you lose all of your ‘hard games’ on your schedule for the past, IDK, 20 years you don’t get bonus points just for playing them. Lots of teams could schedule a USC loss every season but only ND thinks it’s a good idea.
Until Notre Dame actually does something noteworthy, they will remain overrated and disappointing except for those who willfully remain in a fantasy world: Notre Dame fans.
@DJ – I don’t recall a black USC set. Kiffin busted out a black “Halloween” jersey at UT, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he does it while he’s there. Point still remains that the Trojans and others use substance over style and out-recruit the ones who use style.
@Alex – They’re to be commended for their success this year thus far. But they’ve vastly underperformed since the mid-1990’s.
If you honestly don’t think Notre Dame has fallen, then you are delusional. There was a time when ND was the cream of the crop in the college football world. That time has not been the past two decades.
As far as the “tough schedule”, don’t you have to play the schedule before you can point out the accomplishment of having a tough one? I mean, they could lose every game the rest of the way, and I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be pointing out the tough schedule as a positive or an accomplishment.
Thus far, ND has beaten mediocre to poor teams. They face some good teams later, but I wouldn’t claim Notre Dame is back simply because they beat overrated Michigan and Michigan State teams.
@Joe Nguyen and DJ, it does appear the referees have a new font for both their numbers and their position designator. Less block, more “euro”, thinner than before.
Nats and Cardinals in St. Louis both wearing their Braves tribute caps. Ugh.
Also, Cardinals are still wearing their 2011 World Series champions patch. I’ve been an advocate for the Cardinals wearing the patch all year, but wearing it into the postseason seems a little tacky to me.
This is also the first time I can remember the Cardinals wearing their home Sunday hats in the playoffs. Usually go with the home red in the playoffs no matter what day it is.
Couple of uni-notes from watching the Game 7 of the 1987 World Series. First, Cardinals had gray under-brims on their caps; Twins were still wearing green. And the Cardinals wore World Series patches on their sleeves:

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think the Cardinals looked better in the pullover era than they do now. Those stripes really worked for them. I’d like to see those brought back, if maybe slightly less thick. The current uni’s are a bit too plain.
Since it’s about what is cool for recruits, maybe ND could replace Touchdown Jesus with Touchdown Pauly D and change the school fight song to an instrumental “Call Me Maybe”. As long as it gets the top recruits.
Now you’re just being silly.
Obviously the answer is that they need to repaint the Golden Dome to match the helmets.

Sure, it would’ve been better had the Gators worn their white pants, but that’s a right-pretty football game there!
And I’ll say this as a Texas Tech alum – there’s no way the Raiders should ever be in 5 and 1 unless it’s as the & 1. Just an absolutely horrendous look.
That said, Catherine is doing a great job. I disagree with her about as much as I did MV, but it’s a fun read!
Orange lid/blue top/blue trousers? Never a good look.
There are about 120 Division 1 football teams. Each team awards about 25 new scholarships a year. That represents around 3,000 players. Of those, maybe 200 are considered “blue chip” prospects, with multiple major programs jockeying to sign them.
So the argument is that 200 18 year olds control football uniform design and manufacture, an industry worth tens of millions of dollars.
That seems wrong. Thomas Frank’s “The Conquest of Cool” detailed Madison Avenue’s appropriation of the 1960’s counterculture to market product to young consumers (and to older consumers who wanted to look hip). The same thing is happening here.
There’s that scene in “A Hard Day’s Night”, where the ad man is arguing with George Harrison (whom he doesn’t recognize) about what kids today really want. What’s happening is that middle aged white guys at Nike and Adidas are deciding what satisfies the “urban” aesthetic, and clueless white middle aged ADs and boosters are buying it. It’s about as authentically youthful and street as Michael Buble covering a 2Chainz song.
Kids don’t pick schools based on uniforms. They do it the old fashioned way: it’s based on which school offers the most chances to be on national TV, which school has the prettiest girls, and which alumni pay the biggest bribes.
That’s changing. Uniform has become part of the equation. It’s just how it is now.
Yep, 200 or so 18 year olds do have that much impact on the uniforms. If a team can find the right combination of 18 year olds, they can have success on the field. If they can have success on the field, fans get interested. If fans get interested, they buy merchandise. Money.
Like it, or not, it’s how things work.

This is really the 1st week I can mostly agree with that. I haven’t had much of an issue with her pics but way too many all white on the road teams this week. IMO opinion and fantasy world that is never EVER a good look. For anybody, especially if it’s a plain white set with no striping.
No, she’s doing a good job. Just because your opinion is different than her opinion doesn’t mean it’s “HORRIBLE”.

Great to see Reggie Wayne wearing Orange gloves and a mouth piece to support Chuck Pagano and his fight against Leukemia. Orange is the official color of the fight/awareness towards Leukemia, as pink is the color of Breast Cancer awareness.

Raises the question why the NFL doesn’t tackle prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer (death sentence), stomach cancer (death sentence), or address cancer in general.
After all Breast Cancer foundations get the most money of any cancer foundations. Not saying they should stop but definitely shift focus to other causes that have less awareness.

did nebraska or THEosu wear anything (at all) differently than their *normal* unis? no? (and yes, in college football, that is shocking in and of itself)
as far as the 5 & 1 … different strokes…wouldn’t have made my top 5, but that’s just me…of course, i also would have had oregon/washington as my “and 1” (awful, awful matchup)…

TOSU-Nebraska game did look nice. That UK/KU game looked very good as well. I’m not sure about the Ducks making the and 1 though. Washington could do without the extra junk stripes on the shoulders but otherwise is always good unless they pull out the white pants. Oregon by themselves though. I can agree on. Many other options they should’ve gone with besides that one. But at least they didn’t use gray this week.

They looked a lot nicer this week with the gray pants. Keep them with the blue jerseys and the blue pants with the white and it’s a look that’s growing on my by the week.
I can’t find a picture of it online, but one of Notre Dame’s players was wearing a mouth guard that had an image on it that looked like a screaming open mouth with pointy teeth in it. I’ve never seen anything like it. You should look into this and see if anyone else has been wearing mouth guards like this.

In my mind, these two thoughts are correlative.
Is there some kind of moratorium on Georgia Tech?
Their Navy jerseys were not mentioned in week 2 (first time they won in those since the 90s).
Their normal whites were never covered in the Sunday morning uni watch (they were first seen in the 5 and 1, and later featured when our QB wore the #40).
And on Saturday they went with with their 2nd Different storm trooper look. This time they wore the white jerseys they have worn in all their games but the opener and the game against Presbyterian, but wore a new pair of white pants they have not been worn before (presumably the ones they will wear with the gold jerseys whenever they wear those).
