It’s Sunday here at Uni Watch, and the NFL kicks off today! Really not much more to be said about that, so lets just see what happened in the world of College Football yesterday, shall we?

Sunday Morning Uni Watch

This looks to be a fun weekend, what with the 2012 NFL season set to start today, and coming off of a Saturday with some pretty good college action, which we’ll get into in a few moments, but first, some points that I should address from last week:
-Last Saturday, I said that Michigan State was wearing their alternate greens (no white shoulders) in their home opener against Boise State. Turns out that those are actually their primary green tops. I could’ve sworn that the white-shouldered green tops were the primary home jerseys. Would make sense, since it’s an inverse of their road jerseys, but I have that mental note logged in for the future now.
-Two Nike-branded teams (Rutgers and Missouri) had games last week, but I had no idea that they played until I read last Sunday’s comments. Speaking of Mizzou, their opponents (Southeastern Louisiana) wears the Adidas TechFit uniform. You sure that this is made out of that TechFit fabric and not Laffy Taffy? Rutgers looked… okay, I guess? Mizzou didn’t look that bad, actually, but that’s just my opinion.
-I mentioned that SJSU debuted their spear-stripe helmets for their game against Stanford, but I didn’t see that Stanford ditched the pant stripes.
Alright, with last week business out of the way, let’s get into this week’s games:
-One more thing from last week that I missed was that Pitt is going sans-player name this year. They wore blue tops last week, and the move was confirmed for their white tops on Thursday night. However, there is something new behind the Pitt Panthers’ bodies this year: there were helmet decals on the back of the Pitt helmets (could take or find a decent photo. Sorry). Maybe they’re helmets from older eras of Pitt football? Anybody know?
-Utah State beat Utah in Friday night’s game for the first time in 15 years *Flutteryay*, but the thing that I noticed were the compression sleeves/shirts that a lot of the Aggies were wearing. They look to have a TV number only on the right sleeve (photos 4, 10-13, 15, 17, and 23). I don’t hate it, but why the one sleeve?
Moving on to Saturday:
-Penn State should stick with nameless shirts if they continue to have problems like this. (Thanks to Paul “Too Tall Paul” Deaver for that). Virginia did their best Syracuse impression, going orange/navy/orange against Penn State. I like, actually, but I thought that they switched to white socks and black shoes. That’s what I heard and saw when they received their current uniforms a few years back, but they were all wearing white/orange and orange/silver cleats. Speaking of the Orange:
-Syracuse was rumored to have new uniforms (that didn’t look too different from what they currently wear) for their game against USC, played at New Meadowlands Stadium (let’s save the naming rights/wrongs argument for another day, please). I literally don’t see anything new except for the Ernie Davis patch (here’s a close-up of it, which is on the other side of the jersey in that pic), the navy socks (they usually wear white socks), and those sweet comp-sleeves (which some of the the players wore). Was there anything else about the uniform that looked completely different that I might have missed?
-Northwestern had this at midfield and on their helmets over the weekend for 9/11. Also on the field was this, which is a full-time thing. I’m a big fan of the latter, of course.
-There were two SEC conference games that featured a blue and orange school going against a maroon and white school: Auburn/Miss. State and Florida/Texas A&M. aTm debuts their new uniforms (also note the #2 on the sleeve), after what would have been their first on-field showing in Louisiana Tech on Aug. 30th was postponed due to Hurricane Isaac.
-Michigan apparently was serious about keeping the helmet numbers off of their helmets this year. As for the visiting Air Force Falcons, they wore their mono-grey uniforms (THE is pleased with this game). Am I to assume that these are their full-time roads? If so, then good on ya, Air Force. Now, if they can just get rid of the Athletic Block and go for a real block font, we’ll be set (I promise, that’s the last time I ride that font’s butt for the year).
-Iowa wore their throwbacks against Iowa State, and they looked… yeah. The Old Gold pants were especially sweet (take notes, Saints).
-Central Michigan wore all-black against Michigan State. If you’re gonna go BFBS, the uniform should at least look clean. Nothing against CMU, but a miserable design just became even worse.
–Rutgers wore this against the Bills Howard. Well, at least it’s scarlet. One of the broadcasters said that the numbers were a nightmare for the guys up in the booth. Kinda hard to disagree (that’s also a great shot of those “battle-scarred” shoulders). Also, the QB had a RIP dedication on his belt. It says “KW RIP 12”, and it also looks to say “Mom/Dad” as well. Here’s a slightly-better shot from last week’s game against Tulane). Credit Griffin Whitmer for that.
-Missouri wore this in their SEC opener against Georgia. When I saw the new uniforms a few months ago, I wasn’t too impressed. But now that I’ve seen them on the field, they’re growing on me. That helmet is pretty badass. And the numbers are very much readable.

MLB Uni Tracking – The 2012 As and Nats
Today’s featured Uni Tracker is Glenn Simpkins and he’s been tracking San Francisco Giants this season.
Here’s his up-to-date report:
I’m tracking the Giants again this season, and the format of my tabulations should be easier to decipher than last year, for those that cared to take a look (not to mention easier for me to maintain).
On the first tab is game-by-game tracking with colors approximating the jersey color worn (Pale yellow = Cream Jersey, White = Throwback, Powder Blue = All Star game), columns for who started and got credit for the win/loss, and a column where I’ve got some short-hand describing the uniform. Additional notes are on the top of that page.
On the second tab, I maintain running splits by uniform for the starters and the bullpen.
The Giants Have a predictable protocol; Home = Monday-Thursday+Saturday, Orange Bill Sunday (OBS) and Orange Friday, Road = Monday-Saturday and Sunday is that ca. 1990 jersey + Orange bills of the 70’s thing go on.
I’ll leave my fellow readers sus out the stats that they’d find interesting from my tabulations on that 2nd tab. The stat I’m disappointed in is that the alternate that I like, Orange Friday, is not a winner.
I’d like the Sunday road alternate if they’d ditch the orange bills that they’re pairing with it.

Stirrup Fridays…
Because we love the stirrup here at Uni Watch, this section is devoted to those of us who sport the beautiful hose on Fridays — a trend popularized many years ago by Robert P. Marshall, III. For many of us, it’s become a bit of an obsession, but a harmless one — a reflection of our times. Where we once had Friday ties, which has been replaced by Casual Friday — we now have Stirrup Fridays. It’s an endearingly simple concept — no matter where you work (or even if you don’t) — break out a fresh pair of rups to compliment (or clash with) your Friday attire.
We had so many Stirrup Friday participants this week, it’s going to take two days just to show them all!
So, in the order in which they were received, here we go (click on each thumbnail for a glorious, full size image):

“When Rajai Davis wore stirrups for the A’s (my fav team) before he was traded, I thought he looked very sharp. The same with Josh Outman. I decided that this season when I attend A’s games (and since I live in LA, most A’s games are road games in Anaheim), I’d wear these stirrups.
I think it’s a solid look when I wear shorts and a jersey. I like the feel and it helps me stand out.”
Joe Hickey:
“I’m at school preparing for another week of teaching and still buzzing over last night’s O’s win.
Being a displaced Baltimorean, I’ve got to show the pride for my first-place Birds!”
David Sanchez:
“I choose to wear the 1915 NY Baseball Giants as my first Stirrup Friday entry.

“Going with the ’54 Orioles. I know, the Giants probably have more seasons in this style, but I’m still pulling for the resurgent O’s. Also, my dad was stationed on the West Coast with the Army back in ’54 when the modern major league Orioles returned to Charm City. He managed to get leave and get home back across country in order to see the opening day game. We still have the newspapers (VP Richard Nixon threw out the first pitch from the stands!) but never could find the ticket and program that he swore he saved.”

“I ordered some finally after wanting and searching for them for 3 years!
Robert dropped them in the mail to me this week and I got them tonight and put then right on!!
They are my new favorite thing!

2012 Duck Tracker…
The second game of the 2012 Ducks season featured more “lightning” yellow, this time in the form of the jersey. They went with a carbon helmet and pants, for one of my favorite looks of gray/yellow/gray.

Catherine Ryan’s 5 & 1
The five and one has been a staple of Uni Watch for three years, usually ably administered by Jim Vilk. But he got old and tired, so we needed someone young and fresh. And we’ve found that someone in this year’s new 5 & 1 decider…Catherine Ryan.
She shared the 5 & 1 duties with Jim last week, but this week she’s flying solo — lets see how she did:
1. Lousiana Tech/Houston: I love Houston’s uniforms and I’m a sucker for red, white, and blue!
2. USC/Syracuse: I hate both teams but USC looks great and I love Cuse’s orange lid/pants combo!
3. Georgia/Mizzou: Love Georgia’s white tops with the gray pants and Mizzou can get away with french fry tops!
4. Virgina Tech/Austin Peay: Hokie feet. (and Austin Peay looks good, too)
5. NC State/UConn: Love how the UConn numbers mirror the helmet “C.” The all navy on all white made for an interesting match-up!
And 1!: Cal/Southern Utah — I hate everything about Southern Utah’s uniform and Cal really screwed up the all-navy look (see: UConn)
Honorable Mention for the “+1” Weber State’s Clip-Art helmet: Yikes!

That game probably would have made the old and tired man’s Top 5 as well. Mizzou looks sooooo much better than last year. At least below the helmet.
Would’ve had a different #5 and #1 (Air Force/Michigan and WKU/Bama, respectively), but everything else was spot on in my book. Good job, Catherine.
Washington/LSU looked mighty good, too, for those without an aversion to purple.
Iowa State/Iowa looked a lot better than I thought, too. Until I saw the game photos I didn’t think those throwbacks were that great.

Really? The negative space made the tiger look like it had feathers on the back of it’s head. Stripping the M off the helmet loses all their tradition. And the tiger stripes on the sleeves look like fake horns or something. I like the yellow jersey, or maybe I should say different color jersey from pants is much better than all black. Best in years, well yeah, better than the last few years anyway.
And Georgia….I don’t like their look at all. The white helmet strip is bare, always has been. This one would look better link
The pants need to look a bit more silver, too much like the white jersey. And I hate the huge thick red collar on the jersey. Of course the patches on the front junk it it too.
What could be a great uniform is sorely underdone.

Maybe just make up a decal/patch saying, “Shit Happens” and have every team wear it all the time.
Because that’s the truth of it. Life is full of unpleasantness and disaster. We shouldn’t have to point out that we’re thinking of those involved. It should be automatic, natural…not something we wear on our sleeves, or helmets, or whatever…to REMIND us we should be thinking of them.

I like how Mizzou’s new look reflects their new nickname. They changed their mascot to a Bumblebee, right? Was it some SEC thing?

Not really. Until Barry Zito broke out the three stripes a couple years ago (and the players haven’t exactly embraced the look), they were tied, I believe. Orioles wore those stirrups that first season in Baltimore; Giants only in ’47. Beginning in ’48 they went to solid black and stayed that way for 60+ seasons.

Interesting uni-game in Evanston last night… Vanderbilt played Northwestern in a game that ended being quite rainy.
Vandy went full storm-trooper, and Northwestern wore purple jerseys & white pants. The Wildcats also sported their ‘American flag’ logo, like they did last year, in honor of those affected by 9/11. Much respect to Northwestern for doing this.

I wish NU hadn’t worn the black pants at all. Purple helmet and up top, white pants……That’s the look.
Silly Northwestern. Firstly, the stars & stripes thing is REALLY FUCKING STUPID. Secondly, in wearing a purple helmet, you’re supposed to wear black jerseys and purple pants. Purple helmets & jerseys with black pants just looks wrong in some way.
Currently they don’t have a black jersey. just wear white pants at home and the other two pairs on the road and the set works perfectly.
Of course they have a black jersey – this is college football we’re talking about. They just haven’t unveiled it yet. ;)
Official release concerning the Syracuse uniforms Saturday against Southern California:
SYRACUSE UNIFORM HONORS LEGACY OF ERNIE DAVIS
The legacy of Ernie Davis will be with the Orange on Saturday at MetLife Stadium. The Syracuse uniform will feature accessories honoring Davis and the impact he made.
In 1961, Davis became the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. As part of the Nike Rivalry 2012 Uniform Series, every Syracuse student-athletes will wear a special edition undergarment under their jersey, Nike gloves and a commemorative patch on the jersey when the they take the field at MetLife Stadium against USC in New York’s College Classic (3:30 p.m., ABC) on Saturday, Sept. 8.
The theme of the rivalry gear centers around ‘The Elmira Express,’ as Davis was dubbed early in his career, and the retired No. 44. Davis was the second of three Syracuse legends to wear #44. A College Football Hall of Famer, Davis wore the #44 between two others enshrined in the Hall of Fame in Jim Brown and Floyd Little.
The shirt that will be worn under Syracuse’s uniforms features ‘The Express,’ #44 and the sleeve striping that was featured on the SU uniforms of Davis’ era from 1959-61.
One of the all-time greats of college football, Davis was a three-time All-American running back, was named the MVP of two bowl games and played a pivotal role in Syracuse’s 1959 National Championship. The Cleveland Browns was selected Davis in the first round of the 1962 National Football League Draft, however before he could make an impact in the NFL, he tragically died of leukemia in 1963.
The orange and blue gloves feature the Express train and #44. Special edition socks have ‘Express’ written across top of one of the socks and Syracuse University’s zip code 13244 across the other. SU was granted permission by the United State postal service to change its zip code to 13244 as a way of remembering its players, like Davis, who have worn the number 44.
The commemorative patch on SU’s jerseys celebrates Davis’ impact on college athletics, from the time of his graduation from Syracuse in 1962 to present day.
(By the way, the patch will remain on the blue jerseys the rest of the season, but not on the team’s white jerseys.)
We probably can count on one hand the number of times Davis wore a navy jersey at Syracuse. They wore white at home during his time there.
You’re right about the number of times the Orangemen wore blue jerseys during Ernie Davis’ career. Two I know of are the 1960 regular season finale at Miami Nov. 18, 1960. Then in Davis’ final game, the 1961 Liberty Bowl in Philadelphia also against Miami, Dec. 16, 1961.

I am an admitted shoe and sock fanatic, and seeing USC go to idiotic silver shoes with some sort of horse sh*t “fade” socks has sent me over the edge. So when I assume absolute dictatorship of college football, one of my first dictates will be WHITE CREW SOCKS WITH BLACK CLEATS. And by BLACK I mean BLACK, not white and black (I’m talking to you, Nike, who started all this). While I’m no Penn State fan, at least they get their shoes and socks right. And btw, black socks with black shoes (are you listening, Michigan) looks moronic.

while i’m wont to agree that black shoes and low whites look good for SOME teams (and everyone knows i love the classic look), other teams actually look much better when they’re wearing neither…it depends on the uni they’re pairing it with

My Duck thoughts:
Well, after a resounding success last week, Oregon returned to the field to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs in uniforms that were not nearly as well received as their Fighting Ducks unis. Now, I didn’t hate this set (I actually think the yellow/gray combo is a really solid look) but their helmet didn’t do much for me and the jersey has so little gray on it that black pants and helmets might’ve gone better. I’m sure this is a look we could see in the future.

You. Are AWESOME. I was going to say something about the black/white crap that Iowa was wearing on their feet with their throwbacks yesterday, but I left it out. Although I have to say that as long as teams with no black in their school colors don’t wear black socks (like USC so stupidly did link at home, so the cardinal socks are an improvement [I guess] from last year), I’m fine with team-colored socks.

I’m in this club, too, though I don’t mind white or colored shoes. But the short black or colored “little boy socks” (like Boise State’s cute blue ones) make them look like three-year-olds dressed by Mommy to go to their first game with Daddy.

That reminds me of Notre Dame’s bowl game last year Mike Golic Jr.’s NOB was GOLIC JR but his brother’s was just GOLIC. The Jr would be on the Mike not the Golic, but it just looked weird with brothers with different NOBs but without the initials to differentiate, it’s like they had two different surnames — Jr. isn’t part of the surname.

I think it’s a cool thing to do for his son. As a kid, if my dad was a pro athlete, it would be awesome. To be referenced on the field on top of that would be out of this world.

A couple of the Jaguars have their cleats spatted up with white tape. They’ll get fined, of course, but a nice “vintage” look.

I still hate the yellow pants on the Redskins. They need to be burned and sent back to the 70’s where they belong! Modify them to have the white/burgundy double stripe like the rest of the set and it would be much better.
Many of the redskins linemen’s pants seem a little wrinkly and the new cut seemed to give them kind of a diaper aesthetic.

watching the bears colts game today, both Brandon Marshall (chicao) and Vontae Davis (indy) are wearing shoulder pads with aqua coloring visible in the neck area. Coincidence that both of these players were traded from Miami this offseason?
Many, many times players take their shoulder pads with them from team to team. Usually the new team figures a way to re-color them, though, at least the portions that are visible.

1) they look SO MUCH better in orange

Agreed. This is the one team it almost looks like it was done on purpose for and does look better in the orange. But it still looks like a complete mess. Instead of looking “modern” like it did when it came out now it just looks dated like some of the lesser named college teams still rolling out the templates that were used years ago.

Interesting that the alternating light/dark segments of the Broncos’ field are staggered at 5, 15, 25, etc. yard lines (not at the 10, 20, 30, etc.). Has it always been that way?
Steelers’ pants no longer shiny…and my eye tells me the black stripe is an inch or two thinner. Sleeve stripes look idiotic, being that they don’t even really have sleeves anymore.
I’ve wondered if all of the teams had their pants stripes go on a diet. All of them have looked thinner to me in the new era of the Swoosh.

agreed, halon 1301 — steelers are a hot mess — the thinner pants stripes look muy better — but not all pants stripes have to be thinner — just don’t have one thick solid color — although the niners that rob linked to are ridonculous…
as far as the sleeve stripes, no one has yet been able to tell me why the swoosh (and before that, the vector) has to go on the one vanishing part of the jersey…why can’t the swoosh just go on the chest, like it does in the NCAA

The Steelers and Niners both benefit from the thinner stripes but many others looked a lot better with the thicker stripes from last season.
My 1st guess for why the swoosh is on the shoulders was combined with the one on the front of the pants it makes sure it can have one seen from almost all angles. But that leaves the back empty. I live in fear of the day they see this and put a swoosh on everybody’s butt cheeks which would make teams like the Lions linemen look even better. As far as any rules in the rulebook? I have yet to find anything to state where they are to go so it’s still a mystery to me.
Roy Helu has “Helu Jr.” on his jersey this year. He didn’t last year with the Redskins, but did in college.
I think there was a new rule this year allowing that. I recall a story about how happy Ted Ginn Jr. was that he could finally have “Ginn Jr.” on his jersey.
GT wore Navy jerseys last night and won doing so for the first time since the 90s.
The white numbers definitely look better than the Navy ones do when it comes to the patter on them. But the numbers are difficult to read from a distance (had issues discerning 8s from 0s, and a few other numbers took some second looks). They also wore the white helmets again and are using a white comb-covered helmet for the countdown clock on the website (of course the orange helmet is being used for UVA on that same clock and I don’t think they have made the switch to that full-time). I like the white helmet but I definitely prefer the Gold one for regular use, I’m afraid the white one will be used the majority of the time with the gold one being relegated to alternate status.

Not really uni-related, but interesting nonetheless:
I was told that the 49ers’ David Akers tied the record for THE most important NFL record (longest field goal). Tom Dempsey set the record in the stadium with the lowest elevation (Tulane Stadium in New Orleans). Jason Elam and Sebastian Janikowski tied it in the city with the highest elevation in the NFL (Denver). Akers tied it in Green Bay, which is somewhere in between. It’s not even the northernmost city (which would be Seattle), so congrats to him, Elam and Janikowski, but advantage Dempsey.
That was awesome! It made the best sound when the ball smacked the crossbar. Dempsey had half a foot link.

My longest ever? 40 (just messing around, I spun a ball on the Rubber Bowl turf between intramural games and kicked it before it started to wobble). Freakin’ big kudos to all of them!
I’m a soccer player and my best ever was a 45 yarder on Washington State University’s field. I was visiting a friend and they were having intramural soccer games on one half of the field. We went down and started kicking on the other half. To be fair I kicked the 45 yarder with about 10 yards to spare but when I went back to 50 I couldn’t handle the pressure and shanked 3 attempts wide left.
Anything past 35…those goalposts start to look awfully skinny. It really does mess with your head.
45 seemed to be about my limit too. I’m a soccer player as well. We used to kick a few before practice started. And Vilk is right, those posts get reeeeeal skinny really quick.
Making a long one is a lot more difficult with a bunch of players barrelling down on ya too. Big kudos to those guys doing it in a real game situation.
Maybe if I kept my head down, I could have made one from farther, but noooooo…I had to watch the ball sail through the air.
One of my many faults. I was also self-taught, plus I kept switching between straight-on and soccer-style, plus I’d be doing play-by-play in my head instead of concentrating on the kick. It’s a wonder I ever got the dang thing off the ground.
The pictures don’t really do it justice but the gray pant/white jersey combos the Seahawks were wearing today actually contrasted quite a bit on my HDTV instead of just looking like they need to be laundered as Paul puts it.

Random interesting fact. The last 7 Super Bowl champions all had opening day losses. Giants, Packers, Saints, Steelers, Giants, Colts, Steelers.
The Colorado Rapids unveiled their 2013 jerseys today at a season ticket holder party. So far fan reaction is mixed, but I like them and can’t wait to find my name. I’m going to buy a jersey to frame after I highlight my name with a silver ink pen or something. It’s the only way my name is going to get on a professional jersey at this point. More info here:
