Monday Morning Uni Watch

Screen shot 2011-10-09 at 8.27.07 PM.png

The pink thing has really gotten out of hand, never more so than during yesterday’s Giants/Seahawks game, where many of the Jints were wearing pink hose. Seriously, do we really need to see this? Or this? The Giants wordmarks in the end zones were even outlined in pink (here’s a long view). What a mess.

Meanwhile, aside from all the usual pink gear (shoes, armbands, towels, etc.), yesterday’s action also featured pink spatting tape, shoelaces, wristbands worn on shins, mouthguards, and coaches’ cap visor trim. The security guards in Buffalo even wore pink polo shirts. Enough already!

In non-pink developments:

• The Raiders added an Al Davis memorial decal.

• The Pats wore their Pat Patriot throwbacks.

Moon over Foxboro! That’s BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who nearly lost his pants while scoring a second-half touchdown. Looks like he wasn’t wearing a belt and had his pants unlaced.

• Since when are the Seahawks allowed to wear green shoes?

• Giants tight end Jake Ballard spent most of the game with his shoulder pads exposed. This is clearly where football is headed — sleeves have grown so vestigial that some players aren’t even making an attempt to keep their pads tucked in.

• Ahmad Bradshaw spent at least one play carrying the ball with his mouthguard stuck in his helmet.

• I kinda like it when the Vikes and Cards play each other, because then the two worst pants designs in the league are confined to one game.

• Ryan Fitzpatrick continues to wear his wedding band on the field. (As an aside, I’d like to compile a list of all athletes who wear their wedding bands while competing. I’m particularly interested in NFL players — David Carr and David Akers come to mind — but I’m curious about other sports as well. If you have names and/or photos to contribute, please send them my way. Thanks.)

• Turning to Saturday’s college action, Northern Illinois wore solid black. It was the first time they’d worn a black jersey in two decades. (In case you missed it yesterday, there was a ton of additional NCAA uni coverage in Sunday’s post.)

• No photo, but reader Andrew Faher reports an interesting incident regarding Michigan QB Denard Robinson: “He was tackled midway through the fourth quarter and tore his jersey. The next drive he came out wearing a road jersey from the Rich Rod era — it was obvious to see because of the ugly yellow stripes down the sides and back.”

•  Baylor running back Terrance Ganaway was either wearing no-show socks or no socks at all.

• Left over from Thursday night: Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky had a color-on-color and BFBS matchup.

(My thanks to all contributors, including Gregg Girard, Desmond Jones, MJ Kurs-Lasky, Chris Matt Mitchell, Mycoskie, Eric Wahrman.)

    I actually have a couple of the Hawaii overprint dollars. Probably about 10 years ago, when I was working in retail during high school, someone decided to pay with them. I wasn’t sure if they were counterfit or what, but figured since Hawaii wasn’t a state back in the 40’s that they could be real. I accepted them, and immediately took 2 $1 out of my wallet and switched them out. I believe my dad has them still as part of his coin collection.

    I’d never heard of the overprint dollars before this spring, but when I was in Hawaii last month, overprint dollars were everywhere. Every little artsy store, knicknack shop, and scrimshaw place had a ton of them. I don’t recall seeing them at all when I was last there five years ago. Interesting that it was done in fear of a Japanese occupation, when the Japanese actually did occupy part of Alaska, not Hawaii.

    I used to work in retail where I too saw a few of the Hawaiian dollars. Also saw a few silver certificate $1 bills which I quickly traded a real dollar for! Now that I’m at a credit union (Happy Columbus Day!) I’ve moved on to seeing bigger denoms, such as a $1000 bill. And don’t get me started on star notes…

    Couldn’t all this money being spent on cancer awareness be better spent if it was just donated to research or a hospital instead of making everything pink?

    then how would we know how much the nfl really cares?

    ~~~
    seriously, the no fun league would never pass up a “look at me” goldmine like this
    I know… ridiculous for this to be a month long league wide thing. That’s 4 games, which is 1/4 of your entire season spent wearing pink accented uniforms (this year October has 5 sundays, so it’s actually more than 1/4). For a league that used to be so gung-ho about uniform consistency this seems absurd. One home game for each team should sell the appropriate number of pink trimmed NFL merchandise to keep everyone happy.
    I’ve been thinking about this for a week now, and I am all for cancer awareness being a good cause and all that. But the spectacle of this is (to me at least) seemingly overshadowing the cause.
    I lost my mom to cancer two years ago, so every time I see the pink I naturally think of her and losing her.
    The three hours I spend watching a football game is generally a nice time to enjoy a sport (except when my Bucs are losing to the 49ers 48-3) and get away from the real world. Instead, with how much they have been using that pink, about ten times every second, every time I see that incongruous color during a football game, I think of my mom dying. (And presumably some of the millions of people who have lost someone close to them to cancer feel similarly.)
    Thank you NFL. November cannot get here soon enough.
    *Appearing* to do something nowadays is much more important than *actually* doing something.
    I recommend checking out an organization called Breast Cancer Action (link) if you’re more interested in actually fighting breast cancer than you are in wearing pink shit.
    Sad to say, from an NFL viewing stand point, I’m looking forward to November, which can’t be good for what is a very worthy cause – in definite need of a rethink.
    It’s about Breast Cancer Awareness, not about the cure for breast cancer. Thats not being facetious either. You see the pink and you’re aware of it, point made. The bigger question is, is a football game the right or proper venue to really get the point across? Is there not better venues for getting the point across, commercials during soap operas, womens magazines, womens TV programming, etc?
    Maybe for one month of the football season that IS the best way to get the message across, I don’t know. I think it is very unfortunate that it is a constant reminder to some of those who have lost family members or friends to cancer.
    I asked my monther in law who was cured of breast cancer 5 years ago what she thought of all the pink in football. She thinks its a great idea, so who am I to judge?
    I’m sure the 1% of men with Breast Cancer will get the message than. Same famous men that had breast cancer: Rod Roddy and Richard Roundtree.
    And secondly, all the folks here who are ready for november or flat out can’t watch football because someone has pink wristbands on, I don’t get that.
    When I turn on football on sunday afternoon, I look for my team. There they are. They are wearing white today, ok I am rooting for the white team. Oh look someones got pink cleats and theres a pink ribbon painted on the field and part of the logo in the endzone is pink. Breast Cancer Awareness month. Got it.
    For the next 2 hours 59 minutes and 45 seconds I am focused on a game and not what anyone is wearing or what is painted on the field.
    Susan, did you realize they were wearing pink? Do you know what the pink is for? If so they got their point across.
    After I see it a few minutes, I too tune it out. It doesn’t undo the fact that it made me think about breast cancer awareness. But I’m not sitting there for three hours (or six or nine or twelve) focused solely on breast cancer awareness.
    Who the frick isn’t aware of breast cancer? I mean, seriously, I’ve yet to hear of a woman who found out she had stage 4 cancer because she completely ignored a lump on her breast.
    Additionally, shouldn’t the NFL change their uniforms in February to commemorate Black History Month?
    Clearly, since Super Bowl uniforms are the same as every other month, the NFL does not care about the approximately 60% of their players who are black.
    I didn’t see it mentioned so sorry if it’s already been covered, but in Saturday’s Pitt-Rutgers game, Pitt was penalized for having two guys on the field wearing the same number. It’s mentioned very briefly near the bottom of link blog entry. The whole thing is actually a pretty good read (for Pitt haters like me).
    Transportation Iconography: BUFFALO HIGHWAY SIGN
    link
    Is this just a case of bad grammar? Shouldn’t it be “AN ALL-AMERICAN CITY” –where’s the hypen and the “n”?
    Paul, your thoughts?
    Weck. Beef on weck. Weck is short kummelweck, the kosher salt and caraway seed topped roll that gives the sandwich its distinctive taste.
    In last weeks Bills-Bengals Game, Ryan Fitzpatrick did not loose his captaincy patch. His jersey ripped like a piece of wet paper and the replacement did not have a patch on it.
    Below is a picture of him walking toward the sideline with half a jersey still on him as he needed to get a replacement. It’s the best picture I could find with a crappy internet connection at work.
    link
    I was at the game, Keith. They had it up live on the video screens as the refs were trying to yank it off the shoe.
    OK … so, you have something stuck in something else that’s difficult to get out. Not that the 170-pound ref isn’t (eventually) able to move it, but, um, when you have a whole bunch of pro football players standing around, might there be a better choice for the task?
    RE: Clint Dempsey, since Jurgen Klinsmann took over as coach for the US, he’s been going old school and numbering his starters 1-11. Which is why Dempsey was wearing 10 on Saturday night instead of his normal 8:
    1 Howard
    2 Cherundolo
    3 Chandler
    4 Orozco
    5 Bocanegra
    6 Beckerman
    7 Edu
    8 Williams
    9 Altidore
    10 Dempsey
    11 Shea
    I find this interesting because he won’t be able to do that for the World Cup when you have to designate the 23 players and their numbers accordingly. Also it leads to odd things like Bocanegra, who has worn 3 for years, not being able to wear 3 because that is traditionally an outside backs number even though he is a central defender. Just odd to me.
    While in these friendlies, Klinsmann is keeping to the 1-11 convention, he accomodates certain veterans (Donovan wears 10 regardless of whether he plays up top, withdrawn, or in the midfield; if Donovan wears 10, Dempsey wears 8, etc.). He has indicated that when the World Cup finals arrive, and tournament-long squad numbers are assigned, a player’s number preference will come into play. So if Bocanegra makes the squad, he’ll probably wear number 3, even if he is not a starter.
    On the other hand, Brazil has a Finals tradition of assigning the 1-11 numbers to the players who will start in Brazil’s first Finals match.
    Somehow, the Netherlands put numbers 1-11 inclusive on the field for the start of the 2010 World Cup final, despite the fact that numbers were handed out before the tournament.
    link
    They were able to do it in the Round of 16 vs Slovakia as well, but not for any other games. link
    1. One thing I’ve noticed with all the talk about disappearing NFL sleeves – Generally speaking, QBs don’t seem to follow the trend:
    link
    link
    link
    If not cosmetic, what’s the reason for the disappearing sleeves that WOULDN’T apply to quarterbacks like it would to other players?
    2. For some reason, my mind keeps trying to tie Italian Beef into the Cubs logo, but without any luck …
    3. What’s that? No Budweiser signs in the Miller Park locker room? Those InBev folks must hate all of Wisconsin.
    4. MLB/God Bless America/Lack of terror attacks: I have to admit, as a religious man, I’m intrigued by the message, though I have to tell you, I disagree with the logic. A prayer – whether its by the pastor after a sermon or a 4 year old asking God to heal a puppy – carries equal power, because of the thought behind it. When you have 40,000 people singing a song that just happens to be a prayer, well, if they aren’t singing it as a Godly conversation, I don’t know that it would be received as such.
    Well, that, and Mr. Met is a) wearing a black jersey and b) simply referred to as “baseball mascot”. Either way, I have a hard time taking the article seriously.
    If not cosmetic, what’s the reason for the disappearing sleeves that WOULDN’T apply to quarterbacks like it would to other players?
    QBs do something that no other players do: throw. It’s a unique body motion, one that calls for a looser garment, not a tight one.
    Quarterbacks are also less likely tohave someone grab onto their loose sleeve as they attempt to run down the field to catch a ball.
    SB
    But that would be holding. The refs are supposed to throw a flag on all incidents holding, right?
    Has anyone ever gone loose sleeve on their throwing arm and tight/no sleeve on their non? That would be a sight. An awful, awful sight.
    Plus, QBs aren’t so much about showing off their gladiator arms.
    Some (most?) of ’em would look like wienies by comparison to other players.
    I’m pretty sure the Dolphins QBs are the only players on that team that actually have sleeve stripes.
    What I don’t understand for all this obsessiveness about having the tightest jersey possible, players seem to have no qualms about have long flowing mops of hair sticking out of the back of their helmets…
    Exact opposite in baseball where loose is the current fad. I’d have to say that tight would be much easier to pitch in than loose, of course it’d have to be a super stretchy 1000% lighter, wickier, polypropolene and pvc jersey.
    It looks like the Argentina rugby jerseys are stitched along the second stripe to prevent the hem from hooking around the player’s butt.
    I don’t know of any other NFL players who wear their wedding ring in games, but I do know that a player’s wedding ring is the only jewelry allowed to be worn on the field in the English Premier League. Earrings and necklaces have to be taken off, but a player can keep their ring on if they tape it over. Found that out on the Arsenal Highbury stadium tour before the team moved to their new spot a few years ago.
    I was in attendance at the Big Air Conditioner, aka “metlife stadium”, for the game… and those costumes the Giants wore were a disgrace. I can’t comprehend how teams are allowed to alter ‘official’ components of their uniforms (socks in this case) by the NFL uni-police. Grudgingly I understand the accessorizing with armbands/shoelaces, but when a major portion of the uni is compromised it has ‘jumped the shark.’
    I also notice that with the pink-out many giants wore white cleats… how is this permissable?? I also notice that many players on traditional white-cleated teams get away with wearing black cleats during the pink-a-thon in October… Seems more and more that this month has become a free-for-all asthetically in the League.
    On a side note the trend is definitely dripping down through the younger generations. The players on the HS team I coach have been hounding me all month to let them wear pink (I am equipment mgr. as well).. My response has been that they can choose 1 weekend to wear something pink, as a team… not in a rag-tag individual disaster..
    The Marlins logo does look a bit like the Disney monorail poster. Nice.
    PS: It’s Ok to admit you are a Disney fan.
    I’ve seen several close calls this year of NFL guys nearly getting “pantsed”. Not to the Green-Ellis extent yet, but (get it, but/butt), it seems inevitable at this rate someone will be flashing the world full force at some game.
    First time poster, long time reader.
    NIU’s all blacks rock. they go well with their current uni-set, which after years of being “almost there” are finally awesome. the right amount of red, the right amount of black and the right amount of white and no ridiculous typography.
    kudos to my alumna mater.
    “By God’s blessing, we have not been hit by a Muslim attack since 9/11,” Fischer said. “I suggest that in part, we have Major League Baseball to thank. You remember that the week after 9/11 Major League Baseball converted the seventh inning stretch from the singing of ‘Take Me Out To The Ballgame’ to the singing of ‘God Bless America.'”
    I can’t be the only one who’s immediate response to such airtight logic was “Lisa, I want to buy your rock.”
    My immediate response is something along the lines of “dude, STFU”.
    You’re obviously a kinder person than I.
    The real question is why all those other sports leagues — the ones that DIDN’T start incorporating “God Bless America” into their game routines — hate America.
    Paul, you are forgetting about the ‘stars & stripes’ hats as well. Just in case one of those other leagues tried to ‘out-patriot’ the MLB, they make sure a couple times a year they show how pro-USA their league is by having their players, which include many latinos, Canadians, and Japanese, wear caps that look like Uncle Sam wiped his ass with them. However, come to think of it, nothing is more American than forcing your customs and rules on other nationalities. Just ask any Native American…if you can find one ;) By the way Paul, if you don’t like it, you can ghhheeet out.
    I find his comment silly. However, I don’t think it’s silly to have faith in a higher power or to believe that that higher power is fully capable of protecting a people from attack. In fact, I imagine there are many Uni-Watch readers who are also believers. Wouldn’t it be nice if we (I am one) could just come here and read about sports uniforms (his comments had nothing to do with uniforms, by the way) without that kind of crap?
    I guess that’s too much to ask.
    Just for the record, I’m Missouri Synod Lutheran, born and raised. Just celebrated my church’s 125th anniversary yesterday. If you and I both agree that the comment was silly, I’m not sure what’s bothering you (aside from the fact that, as you correctly point out, it doesn’t have anything to do with uniforms, though that’s certainly not that unusual around here).
    My reply wasn’t specifically meant for you, and I apologize if it seemed that way. It was meant to be a comment on the fact that the item was even in the ticker at all. As for what bothered me about it, maybe PL’s use of “evangelical crackpot” just hit me the wrong way. Probably an overreaction on my part, but I’d rather this site be about sports uniforms and not religion and politics. Of course it’s not my website, and PL has a right to say whatever he wants.
    Is this why I can’t find a single cracker jack vendor at a baseball game? In the choice between an attack free America and salty sweet snack a-plenty America, I choose heart disease.
    The guy (Fischer) is not an uneducated idiot. He simply took a PR opportunity to do what Christians are instructed to do which is “Broaden God’s Kingdom”. To take his statement that a (not the) reason there have been no terrorist attacks in the USA since 9/11 is solely (he says “in part”) because a song has (sometimes) been replaced at a baseball game is quite obviously incorrect. We’re all smarter than that here at UW. Not every Christian is what they are stereotyped as, just as not every Muslim is a terrorist. PL, I take your Hate America comment as tongue in cheek as I’m sure it was intended. Maybe you have other information on the man to call him a crackpot, but if not, I have to say it would be undeserved name calling in this instance.
    “In response to the Fort Hood shooting in November 2009, Fischer wrote that the government should “stop the practice of allowing Muslims to serve in the U.S. military. The reason is simple: the more devout a Muslim is, the more of a threat he is to national security.”[5][6] Since then, he has advocated for the forced removal of all Muslims from the United States, writing that “simple Judeo-Christian compassion dictates a restriction and repatriation policy with regard to Muslim immigration into the U.S.”[7][8] Fischer has also claimed that the First Amendment of the United States Constitution applies only to Christian Americans, and not to practitioners of other religions such as Islam and Judaism.[9]”
    He’s a crockpot, racist, bigot idiot.
    Landon Donovan’s injury had absolutely nothing to do with Clint Dempsey wearing #10. Klinsmann has implemented a system where the starters wear #1-11, just like decades ago. He has also stripped the names off the jerseys, too.
    Regarding wearing wedding rings – back when Mark Jackson was playing in the NBA, he used to tie his wedding ring into his shoelaces (as the wearing of jewelery is prohibited). No idea when he started (He got married in 1990, so I’d guess around then), but he continued to do it until he retired in 2004.
    Good one. I found this article about it:
    link
    But I have not been able to find a photo. Just spent the past 20 mins poring over Jackson pics — no sign of the ring.
    All you Pink-Haters out there do realize all this pink paraphernalia is being auctioned off with ALL proceeds going to Breast Cancer Research Foundations, right?? Is it aesthetically pleasing? Maybe not. But you know as well as I that imbeciles will pay top dollar for Cam Newton’s pink du-rag, therefore making it a good thing. So just shut up and watch the game for crying out loud..
    Besides, the cheerleaders look DAMN good in hot pink!
    Yeah… and is there any reason they couldn’t just auction the NORMAL COLORED equipment off for the same cause?
    Why the hell does it need to be pink crap to support the cause? Assuming I was a collector and fan of a team, I’d want the autographed game-worn helmet more than I’d want a stupid ass ugly pink shoe or wristband.
    Why not skip the pink shit and auction off all the players’ regular gear from October to imbeciles that will pay top dollar for Cam Newton’s (black, white or blue) do-rag? Win-win.
    Because if you don’t have pink there it is not raising awareness which is the entire point. Unless the announcers say everytime Cam Newton is on the screen that his arm bands are being auctioned off for BCA. Picture them doing this for every different player.
    Oh bull to that too. They can paint a ribbon on the field and hang a few banners and show commercials dedicated to the cause without needing to totally fuck the aesthetics of the game.
    Jeff that is an interesting take on it and probably the way it should be. Some commercials, banners, ribbons, etc. Keep it in check and don’t mess with the uniforms or mess with them minimally (if football in general is in fact the right place for it). By minimally perhaps a small ribbon on the jersey or helmet.
    I do agree the giants pink socks was a bit overboard.
    BUT, the way some folks on here make it sound is like breast cancer awareness is stupid, hate anything pink and if they see one pink banner during an NFL telecast they’re turning it off. THAT I have a problem with.
    “the way some folks on here make it sound is like breast cancer awareness is stupid, hate anything pink and if they see one pink banner during an NFL telecast they’re turning it off.”
    ~~~

    who exactly does that?

    if anything, the ONLY complaints that are related to aesthetics are that breast cancer is NOT, despite what you may think, the ONLY cancer out there…and maybe perhaps the other cancers are being given short-shrift by all this pink shit

    no one is saying that breast cancer awareness is stupid…but there are better ways (and certainly more aesthetically pleasing ways) of showing this than turning an entire month of football into a pink clown show

    I’d be curious to see how much of the proceeds actually go to breast cancer research…I’ll bet it’s a lot less than they’d like you to think.

    Ry Co: Really? NO doubt? I don’t have any figures, but assuming you don’t have figures that have been audited by a neutral third-party… doubt as to where charity money goes is always fair. Charities are notoriously shady. Not 100% of them, but ehough to have doubt.

    i misunderstood snowdan’s comment a bit. because of the pink bashing context of the previous comments, i was thinking more on the line of the NFL handing the charity the money… rather than the charity dealing with the money once it’s donated to them.

    but still, i stand by the fact that i call bullshit on the “a lot less than they’d like you to think” train of thought. not with our media-crazy-must-know-everything attitudes, and not with a monster partnership like the NFL putting it on the radar…

    “Is it aesthetically pleasing?”

    ~~~
    BIN-fuckin-GO!
    when paul changes the name of this site to “the obsessive study of auctioning pink shit for causes” …
    then we’ll stop complaining about it
    until that time, however…
    “breast cancer is NOT, despite what you may think, the ONLY cancer out there”
    So let’s do nothing for ANY cancer instead of doing SOMETHING for one type of cancer. You blew it there LI. Tom V. has a valid point and he states it well. Is the massive use of pink overboard? Yes. Is it wrong to have the awareness quite visible? Nope. The stat that needs to be reviewed is how much money is generated by the program vs. the pre-pink years.
    Anyway, you have the right to whine about pink and vuvuzelas, and I have the right to cry about the colts shoulder stripes and Belotti bold. That’s why we’re here.
    benjamin,
    where, and please do point it out, did i ever say anything about not doing something for one type of cancer…
    take your time, because you’ll need it
    now then…my point, and i think others on this site as well, is that there are more cancers out there besides breast cancer, and while no one is opposed to breast cancer awareness, we are simply opposed to a monthlong pink clown suit show
    imagine all september, because that is prostate awareness cancer month (what, you didn’t know that??? maybe that’s because the whole fucking league isn’t wearing powderblue jockstraps for the entire month)…and all december (which is AIDS awareness month) all teams wearing red accoutrements…you’d probably have a fit over AIDS awareness, cuz we know you and god hates fags…
    but just imagine if for an entire season, we decided to raise awareness for each disease by dressing all the players in the color of the disease of the month…
    it’d be pretty fucking stupid, wouldn’t it?
    im actually NOT whining about pink, per se — i actually wish some team(s) would consider using it — it’s not the color i object to — it’s the desecration of the uniforms…breast cancer is awful, and i wouldn’t wish it on anyone, but there are about 10 billion other diseases that suck out there, and we don’t spend an entire month ruining uniform aesthetics for them
    and the pink they’re using is actually a pretty good shade of pink — it even goes very well with the vikings purple — they should consider that as an accent instead of the gold they currently wear
    but please benjamin…do not put words into my mouth, especially those which i neither spoke nor implied…it’s like you and america … if i choose not to wear a flag pin or sing GBA during the seventh inning stretch, clearly i hate america and have let the terrorists win
    if i complain about the wearing of pink for a month, i obviously want every woman and her sister in america to get cancer, simply because i am heartless and if the nfl didn’t do this wonderful thing, all women will have no clue about the disease
    yes?
    Peter King of Sports Illustrated also dislikes the pink. You can see his comments on it here with points 2. h. to 2. j.
    That pic of the piping atop of the 1909 A’s cap was worth the price of admission today.
    Absolutely magnificent.
    I wrote on your Facebook page about it Paul, and I’m surprised it didn’t get mentioned here, but during the Steelers-Titans game yesterday I noticed Chris Johnson wearing a pink jock strap. Yeah, I’m not kidding, either. I have no pictures to prove it. Can anyone help me?
    Hey, can someone give me the link to the “hat surgery” page? Cannot find it in my favorites.
    Any chance the Raiders add some kind of permanent Al Davis memorial design to their uniforms, a la the Bears and their “GSH” sleeve graphic?
    I wouldn’t be suprised if they left the AL on the helmets past this year.
    Wow, did Jason Campbell’s helmet have a lot of stuff.
    AL..pink ribbon..uni #…NFL shield…green dot.
    I didn’t realize how much I didn’t notice that Steven A. Smith left ESPN until I just realized seeing him again over the past week or so. Has he been back for a while and I just started catching him?
    I just noticed him last week.
    I am not a fan of Steven A., but he is a connected guy and seems to get good scoops. Maybe it’s his delivery.
    I find the combination of his voice and his delivery style annoying. Kornheiser and Wilbon have basically the same delivery style, as do the Two Live Stews when they go on First Take, but they don’t bother me. I think if he still had that harsh, Gilbert-Gottfried-like voice, but with a calmer delivery I’d probably like Steven A. better too.
    During the 2007 Wildcard Weekend Seahawks players showed off some new sneakers by Nike that used the lime green color. There were a couple different styles and some players even had matching shoelaces. Players have been wearing them off and on ever since. link
    Did anyone get a close look at the Titans helmets yesterday? They appeared to have stickers over their red flame highlights making them pink. Am I just seeing things?
    Funny you should mention that. Watching the Giants game yesterday, on longer-distance camera angles, the red stripe on the Giants pants looked pink. On closer shots they were clearly red but I think the bright sunlight was making them appear pink.
    I was busy all day yesterday so I didn’t get a chance to defend my comment after I was surprised to see it chosen as the quote of the day. I think Phil picked it because he knew it was an unpopular opinion and would spark debate in the comments. To refresh your memory, here is the quote:
    “When you combine Al Davis’ death with Nike making the NFL’s uniforms next season, I think it’s pretty much guaranteed the Raiders will now get a uniform redesign/update/overhaul. I think they need it; they’ve had basically the same uniforms for nearly 50 years now.” – The Hungry, Hungry Hipster
    It seems like the majority of Uni Watch readers, or more accurately Uni Watch *commenters*, have an obsession with football uniforms that were created (or “perfected” in their eyes) in the 60’s and haven’t changed much since then. Pardon me for not realizing the 60’s were the sacred Golden Age of football uniform design. Just because a team has had the same uniform for 40+ years doesn’t mean they should keep it forever. Times change. Styles change. I would rather see a team adopt a new modern uniform that I hate than stay with the same “traditional” uniform they’ve had for almost half a century. (See Arizona Cardinals.) As long as it shows thought outside the box, I don’t mind something new. What’s wrong with trying something different? Mix things up a bit! I’m not saying the Packers, Bears, Raiders, and Chiefs should get completely new, drastically changed uniforms. But at least a subtle update to give the unis a modern twist is LONG overdue.
    It seems like there isn’t much support for modern/newer uniforms on Uni Watch, and I am PROUD to make the following statements: I *LOVE* the current Bengals uniforms. I *LOVED* the Bills 2002-2010 uniforms, especially the white jersey. And I *LOVE* truncated shoulder loops/UCLA stripes.
    And now let me get back to the Raiders and why I think they need a uniform update. Ever since Oakland got destroyed by nearly 30 points by the Buccaneers (of all teams, the one that cramps their pirate style/steals their pirate thunder) in Super Bowl XXXVII, played at the end of the 2002 season, the Raiders have tanked. In the eight seasons since, one of the most storied franchises in professional sports has a record of 37-91 for a .289 win percentage. The “Raider Mystique” that their uniforms evoke has been slowly dying since their Super Bowl loss and officially died when Al Davis passed away.
    Al Davis WAS the Raiders. Everything we associate with Oakland is due to him. And the reason I think his death is probably gonna bring about new Raider uniforms is because Davis was an old man stuck in his ways. Even the Raiders players admitted this when they complained in an interview that Davis didn’t adopt modern technology. Everything was 60’s and 70’s era. Instead of PowerPoint, he still used an overhead projector. As long as Davis was alive the Raiders would never change their uniforms. And now that he’s gone and Nike’s taking over, the possibility of new Raiders uniforms is very, very real. How do we know the new owner, whether it be his wife, son, or someone else, has an emotional attachment to the Raiders uniforms? All Uni Watch readers know one of the most common and best ways to revive a struggling sports franchise is to adopt new/updated uniforms. With a .289 win percentage since 2003, wouldn’t the new owner like some change? This is what new uniforms symbolize.
    You didn’t hear what people said yesterday about Davis branding the Raiders, or the Greenie & Golic discussion this a.m., evidently.
    The uni certainly isn’t the main thing in the point they all made. But it’s part of it.
    You also, I’d guess, weren’t around for the Raiders glory years. You appear to be evaluating them by what’s happened during the times you remember, not looking at the entirety of their existence.
    Dismissing Davis and being “old and set in his ways” is actually quite condescending and presumptuous. Maybe, just maybe, he understood the importance of branding and continuity (despite the team having a down cycle) better at 82 than you do at your age.
    “Dismissing Davis (as) being “old and set in his ways” is actually quite condescending and presumptuous.”
    Sorry Ricko, I didn’t mean to be offensive. Let me apologize for that comment. I was just making a point. Since the Raiders players themselves complained about Davis using technology from the 60’s and 70’s they were implying that he was an old man stuck in his ways. I didn’t mean to insult the guy or his legacy. I admire innovators and he did a lot of innovative things in his career.
    I can’t help but agree with The Hipster. The Raiders, along with KC, (gasp) Green Bay, Giants, Browns, and even the new Bills uniforms, in my opinion, are ready to be brought forward in time.
    If it looks like my high school JV football team could have been wearing it in 1987, then I think it could use an update.
    Now, since I paid for my membership card, do I get to keep it, or how does this work?
    Not Cowboys? They lost the shoulder yokes and added the silver, etc., the same year as Raiders switched to their look.
    All about differing perspectives, isn’t it. You say those teams look like JV teams in 1987. I say the Jets in their green pants and white jerseys yesterday looked like a high school team from ’67.
    Just saying…if Raiders haven’t changed since ’63 because someone is old and set in his ways, what’s the reason for the Cowboys staying the same for exactly the same amount of time?
    Consider this: the Cowboys and Raiders have worn essentially their same uni designs for, like, 94 per cent of their respective histories.
    Not even the Yankees can say that.
    The only possible change I would go along with for the Raiders would be a silver jersey with black numerals. It could be an alternate, worn a couple times each season.
    A good many 1987 JV teams and 1967 high school teams looked better than, say, the Arizona Cardinals.
    I’m not a hardcore traditionalist, so I am always interested to see new uniform design, whether it be a complete change (Denver Broncos), or just an updated version (NY Jets). So, I think I fall more in The Hungry Hipsters school of thought.
    However, as a long-time “Raider Hater” and Bronco fan, I have always loved the Raider uniform. I just can’t see where a change would help it. I am a designer by trade, and can usually spot areas that can be upgraded (or, at least updated)…with the Raider uniform, I just can’t find anything.
    Of course, my opinion means absolutely nothing to the NFL (or the Raiders), and it’s a real possibility that some changes could benefit the uniform set. I guess I’m just convinced that I’ll have to see it to believe it.
    Unis…must…have…more…crap…everywhere…to…be…modern…and…not…suck…need…piping…swatches…panels…butt markers…stripes…ending…in…space…or…wrapping…around…legs…
    I think the Rams are an excellent example of updating a uniform without complicating it. In fact, I’d say the road whites were simplified with the 2000 update!
    The Raiders are one of those teams that should leave their uniforms alone. Plus, to be honest, since they STRICTLY use names and numbers, their jersey can match up just fine with the truncated sleeves n’at.
    Dallas? Same thing, except their throwback should be white instead of blue.
    Green Bay ALMOST updated their uniforms early in the Brett Favre era. Luckily they didn’t. They need to leave their uniforms alone too, except they should ditch the throwback and have a blue jersey of the current design.
    The Giants aren’t updating their uniforms.
    The Browns? Really?
    The Chiefs…okay, THEY could use an update. But I don’t see the conservative Hunt family doing that. They are the AFC West equivalent of the Rooneys.
    Green Bay ALMOST updated their uniforms early in the Brett Favre era. Luckily they didn’t.
    But this was the proposed early 90s Packers change:
    link
    I didn’t hate that. Just because you update something, doesn’t mean you have to get all new-fangled-font, excessive piping and all the other things that were wrong with a lot of the newer re-designs like Vikings/Jaguars/Cardinals/Falcons etc.
    That Packers proposal didn’t look that bad. Maybe for 1992 it was a little out-there, but it’s a lot better than a lot of unis we’ve seen since then.
    The Raiders uniforms are a prime example of a uniform that does NOT need changing to accomodate modern uniform fit, fabrics and design. There are no truncated stripes, for example. You can fit the Raiders template into a modern uniform without changing a thing. Perfect just the way they are…
    Along with the silver jersey I mentioned earlier, I ‘d like to see the Raiders return to circa 1970 silver numbers on the white jerseys. With a more accented black border, these numbers would have no problems being seen.
    And the Saints should bring back their gold numbers from the hippie era.
    This may be going too far, but does anybody else think the 49ers should try gold numbers as an alternate for both home and away just to see how it looks?
    The comment by the (soi-disant) Hipster that the majority of commentators on this site believe that the 1960s were the Golden Age of uniforms is a slander.
    We all know that the Golden Age was the 1940s.
    My sensibilities were set in the late 1950s when as a small child I first glimpsed LSU in gold pants, white jerseys and gold headgear and knew that would be the prettiest uniform I would ever see in my life. And they still wear essentially the same uniform today…
    There will always be teams making changes. For better or for worse. Can’t we just have a few uniforms that look good and stay looking good? There is a reason why so many of us love the classic looks.
    Root for the Cardinals and the Vikings.
    Cards-Vikings pant-a-poloosa was a laugher aesthetically. The Viks unis stink. Those throwbacks they wore this year, must return full time. No need to add them to the next contest, for just that reason. They can do no better, then to return to that old look.
    The Vikings throwbacks make me want to puke. I hate it when they wear them. I’m glad they updated to new modern uniforms. They needed the change.
    No screenshots, but several defensive linemen were wearing the RichRod era “tusk” design road jersey in the Michigan vs. Northwestern game, like the one DRob changed into after the tear. Disturbing to see such inconsistency on the field.
    Someone posting on MGoBlog theorizes that the D-line switched to the old jerseys at the half because Northwestern’s O-line was holding during the first half, and last year’s jerseys would make holds more obvious to the officials, thus the switch. It seems at least plausible since it was the whole D-line rather than just one or two players who had their jerseys ripped.
    You really believe the NFL and NFLPA goes to all these lengths to support BC only to embezzle the money?!? I bet you also believe America orchestrated 9/11, too..
    It’s not embezzling … it’s a matter of “creative accounting”. This is also why so many franchises of all sports “have to” have publicly financed new stadiums. The poor things don’t have any way to be competitive with their peers without government help. Just ask MLB teams to open up the books. They’re dirt poor! They’ll tell you so themselves.
    No doubt all profits will go to breast cancer research. Now, before they make profit, they have to pay for the gear, pay the equipment manager for organizing the stuff, paying the beer vendors who make it possible for people to see the gear they’re paying for, pay the owners and supporting casts of the leagues for their work. And I’m sure that whatever “profit” is available after all the bills are paid will be given away just as promised.
    On an unrelated note, I’d like to go to my city council and ask for funding to replace my home, so I can stay competitive with my neighbors. Surely, with increased property tax assessments, increased utility usage (because more people will want to come visit my new home), the city will get their money back. Right?
    I like how the kids have Excelsior on their jerseys, and I feel like no one since the 18th century has used that word. My high school freshman football team did the same thing.
    Also, the girl’s volleyball team in my high school, Methacton High, has “Dig Pink”, which is one game (I believe) where the team wears all pink and raises money for breast cancer awareness.
    The same day, I saw link. Ugh.
    did anyone see Patrick Chung’s helmet get stuck on D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s cleat yesterday? it was pretty weird and it took forever for him to get it off. I have a feeling chungs gonna be wearing a visor next week
    heres a link: link
    And now I’d like to respond to some comments from yesterday that refer to my screen name. Here they are:
    “Is it ironic to anyone else that The Hungry Hungry Hipster is pushing for a team with a vintage and edgy identity to conform to the ignorant mainstream trend that is updating to modern jersey styles? I mean absolutely no offense by that statement, I just find it a bit counterintuitive.” -Desmond Jones
    And in response to that, The Jeff wrote:
    “No, not really… because actual hipsters don’t call themselves hipsters.”
    And now for my response:
    Uni Watch isn’t the place for a debate about hipsters, but since I’m stuck with this screen name on Uni Watch I guess it can’t be avoided.
    When I first started sending Paul content for the ticker in 2009, I wanted to remain anonymous. I didn’t mind not getting any personal credit for my submissions because seeing my contributions on the site were enough of a reward for me. Then one day Paul made an email I sent him about Tecmo Bowl the featured article and referred to me as The Hungry Hungry Hipster. He didn’t make up the name; I had already been using it in my emails to him. I do realize it’s an odd screen name to use on a site that talks about sports uniforms, since it has nothing to do with sports or uniforms. It was just a play-on-words of the game Hungry Hungry Hippos using the name of pretentious and creative 20-something art school graduates with trust funds and a penchant for fashion living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn: hipsters.
    Most hipsters aren’t into sports, so that’s another reason why it sticks out like a sore thumb on this site. But they do love art and design, and like Desmond Jones said, they DO love all things vintage and stuff that is edgy. But they are also obsessed with irony, and since Desmond found something I said ironic, I find this highly appropriate for someone with “hipster” in their screen name.
    Desmond makes a good point. Since hipsters are indeed into vintage and edgy things, shouldn’t I want the Raiders to stay with their current uniforms, since they were created in 1963 and are badass looking? This is the problem though: the Raiders unis *have been the same SINCE 1963*. Logos and uniforms don’t look and feel as vintage when they’ve looked the same throughout the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s. Say I wear a t-shirt with the Raiders logo on it. How do you know what decade I’m trying to represent? You don’t! Hipsters like to wear t-shirts that throwback to another era. After Flying Elvis was adopted by the Patriots in 1993, I was wearing Pat Patriot t-shirts. After the Bucs went pewter in 1997, I was still donning Bucco Bruce. This was waaaaay before the throwback merchandise trend of the 2000’s with distressed screen printing to make brand new t-shirts look old. I was wearing t-shirts that looked old because they WERE old!
    The vintage/throwback trend is dying. Honestly I think real hipsters would be more into new, modern, futuristic uniforms. Those Nike light-up sneakers from Back To The Future II that were selling for thousands of dollars recently support this. They represent a transitional period from vintage cool to future cool. Since they were designed in the late 80’s, they are vintage, but since they were designed to look like how sneakers might appear in 2015, they are futuristic. This is called retrofuturism and it is the perfect gateway from throwbacks to throwforwards. What do you think Nike’s Pro Combat program is all about? Someone said in the comments about a month ago that the whole Pro Combat program is just a huge Turn Ahead The Clock campaign, and I completely agree.
    How is updating to modern jersey styles ignorant? Haven’t you ever heard of cashing in on trends? That is what the whole fashion industry is all about! And I know most people would respond to this by saying, “This is sports, what does it have to do with fashion?” Have you ever heard of merchandising??? Jersey sales skyrocket when a team adopts new uniforms!
    And now I’d like to respond to The Jeff, who said actual hipsters don’t refer to themselves as hipsters. This is arguable. In support of your comment Jeff, I will admit that an uber hipster told me once that “No one says ‘hipsters’ anymore.” This was in 2009. I asked him what term hipsters were now using to refer to themselves, and you know what? He wouldn’t tell me. So the only way I know of referring to them is to use “hipsters”.
    Am I a hipster? According to The Jeff, no, since I am calling myself one. And maybe he’s right, because I am more of a former hipster. I used to have a hipster appearance and had hipster tendencies, but when compared to real hipsters I was kinda put to shame. But regardless of that, it’s just a screen name and I’m stuck with it on Uni Watch. When I was submitting a lot of content in 2009, Paul started referring to me as “HHH”. Maybe using “HHH” from now on will help me avoid any negative connotations and Uni Watch readers will concentrate on my contributions rather than on my odd screen name.
    Except when I see “HHH” I think of the Twins playing in the Metrodome with those giant circle air vents behind home plate.
    SIs Peter King:
    Pink socks on the Giants. Pink gloves, okay. Pink cleats, I guess. But long pink socks with the blue uniform? Yeccccch. What’s next? Full pink uniforms?
    i. I mean, really. Is someone going to buy Victor Cruz’s pink socks at an auction to benefit the battle against breast cancer? I don’t want to diminish that effort, but there’s got to be some limit. Some of the stuff players have worn the last two weeks looks absurd.
    j. Peyton Manning wasn’t allowed to wear black high-tops to celebrate the life of Johnny Unitas after Johnny U died, yet NFL players can dress without regard to the NFL’s uniform code, some wearing pink socks, some wearing other pink items, and some not? I don’t get it.
    I’m glad Steve Jobs was mentioned in the ticker today because it gives me an excuse to talk about Halloween. I think you’re going to see a lot of people dressed up as Steve Jobs and Al Davis this year. Definitely more Steve Jobs costumes, but I’m sure you’ll see a few Al Davis’ here and there. Depends on what party/bar you go to.
    As a gag I was thinking of combining Jobs’ and Davis’ looks into one costume. I’d wear a black turtleneck, dad jeans, a white early 90’s Raiders windbreaker, and eyeglasses that are a hybrid of those worn by both Jobs and Davis.
    I just laughed at the thought of people challenging you to show them an American death certificate.
    Since the 2007 the Wildcard Weekend the Seahawks players showed off some new sneakers by Nike that used the lime green color. There were a couple different styles and some players even had matching shoelaces. They have worn them off-and-on ever since. link
    Richland High School (WA) uses the name Bombers. link
    It’s near the Hanford Nuclear Site, part of the Manhattan Project and the most contaminated nuclear site in the US.
    The team uses a mushroom cloud as a logo.
    Not counting supplier vectors, collars (crew to v-neck), a commemorative patch here and there, sleeve cuts, etc., The Raiders uniform has not changed one iota since 1975, when the NOB went from serifed in 1974 to san serif.
    The EXACT same uni since 1975.
    I like the silver numbers on the white jersey, but that’s personal taste. I admit they’re not as functional as the ones they have now.
    IMO- the Rayduhz look is so dated. Plain black jersey. Plain silver pants. That’s it. And the rabid fans with the skulls and the Darth Vader- tired. It’s common knowledge that the Raiders will continue to be terrible until Al’s out of the photo. Now he is, tho the family will still control the team. Dumpy dated stadium, dumpy dated look.
    Here’s some uni-hyperbole;
    link
    Don’t the Raiders still hold the right of first refusal for L.A.? (re: Dumpy dated stadium).
    New Lebron’s @ 170 each. As a bonus–they’re ugly
    And I remember my terrific Adidas ABA Americanas—29.99. And I thought my dad would kill my mom for spending that much.
    link
    Ick. As someone who works out regularly, I prefer lighter gear (unless I’m strength training), so I’ve always been against LeBron’s shoes, given how heavy they are. Why would anyone wear something so heavy and expensive? No thanks. I’ll take my Kobe Zoom 6 shoes any day over those overpriced bricks.
    I made this point yesterday, and it’s obviously unprovable one way or the other, but I think the Raiders uniforms is probably the most influential uniform created in the last 50 years, and for that reasons it should stay the same.
    If I was to tweak, and I really don’t this is necessary, I would increase the helmet logo marginally, something equivalent to what the Detroit Red Wings did.
    Shite;) I was hoping my point was an original one.
    Ironically I spent a good part of my Thanksgiving day morning putting together via You Tube the 30 for 30 episode on Bill Buckner/Steve Bartman. Especially the piece on Bartman was captivating viewing – not quite sure why.
    Thanks for the CFL – it just didn’t seem like CFL weather for CFL Thanksgiving football today.
    Does it bug anyone else that the Lions field blue (endzone letters, etc) is so much darker than their uniform blue?
    The REF has pink wristbands on.
    Plus the ribbon on the shirt and the hat.
    I’m all for the cause, but this is relentless. And Fox was showing the Ray Romano SU2C spot every thirty seconds.
    3 weeks to go.
    For what its worth, in Thanksgiving Day action, the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 17-1.
    Nothing too uni-noteworthy, but you have to love the fact that you can lose 17-1 in the CFL. Long live the Rouge!
    A Black and Blue Division game that doesn’t look as pink as I thought it would. There are some pinks do-dads, but this game looks pretty tame. Thoughts?
    I’ve seen one Lion with pink socks instead of white… but, overall, yeah this one isn’t too bad. The Raiders/Texans game yesterday was fairly light on the pinkage as well.
    What are you talking about? Dallas had a bye this week. While they do have a star on their helmet, they aren’t called the Stars.
    /what?
    In a vaguely related item, did you know about Hawaii overprint currency? I didn’t – fascinating little story
