Good Guys Wear White, Right?

white sweater header

By Phil Hecken, with Pollster James Huening

Ah, memories. I grew up during the halcyon days of the NHL when the Flyers, Islanders and Canadiens (and later, the Oilers) were the kings of hockey. In fact, from 1972 through 1990, other than those four teams, only the Calgary Flames (in 1989) won a Stanley Cup. Despite my feigned disdain for the sport of hockey nowadays, the fact is I was a huge fan of the game growing up. An back then (and up until the 2003-04 season) everyone wore a white sweater at home.

My fondest memories of the white jersey, of course, came while I was following the New York Islanders, a team who played (and still plays) in the Nassau Coliseum, a scant few minutes from my home. Back then, before cable television reached my neighborhood, local games were subject to a “home blackout,” meaning, the only Islander games I could ever see, unless they were somehow on national TV, were road games. Thus, the white sweater took on an even greater prominence — it was special. I had to GO to a game to see my team wearing their home white jerseys. Back then, since I was actually good friends with the son of the team’s dentist, I did go to quite a few games (and of course, had the best seats in the house). All sports, except for the NFL, had the home team wearing white. Ya know, the good guys. And when I’d go to those games, all the teams who came into the Nassau Coliseum wore a different color uniform, and that was cool too.

Now…you go to a game (or watch one on TV) and the road team (for the most part) always wears white. Of course, the “dark at home” can be traced directly to the sales of the dreaded alternate jersey (and yes, I know that prior to prior to 1969-70 the home team wore dark — ever wonder why the Rangers were always called the “Blue Shirts”?). But when I grew up, the home white jersey was king.

So, when it was mentioned a few days ago in the comments that “such and such” is a better white jersey than “so and so’s”, it got me to thinking that we should put this all to a poll. There are quite a few of the white jerseys in the league that I prefer to the alternate or dark jersey wears — and I bet I’m not alone. But, how do they stack up against each other? And would anyone besides me like to see the NHL return to “white at home”?

Today I’m teamed up with Uni Watch Pollster, and my suitemate for the Deep Freeze, James Huening, who’s assisting me with today’s column. Since I’ll be departing Minnesota today (and missing all or at least part of both NFL playoff games), I didn’t want to leave you guys with a *snow day* — so you’re getting this column (and all that follows) instead. And with that, here’s James with the setup:

~~~
Oh, yeah, white at home in the NHL… I think only the youngest readers here wouldn’t remember that.
For me, as a Blackhawks fan, it was a little bit different. For starters, there were no championships and the home blackouts had nothing to do with not having cable TV. They had everything to do with “Dollar” Bill Wirtz and his supposed promise to his father Arthur as he lay dying that home games would never be televised as long as he owned the team. So, if I was watching the Hawks on TV, they were on the road.
No white sweaters.
No Barton organ.
No anthem. (OK, that one was actually on TV, but I was at the game.)
Hell, no Stadium at all.
So, yes, it was a special treat to get to see them wearing white.
But I digress. We’re not just here to reminisce about the good ol’ days. We want to know what you think of the current crop of NHL road unis. You know, the ones with the white jerseys.
So please, take a few minutes to complete our survey. Here are some pictures you can use as reference material. They’re broken up into groups of six and organized alphabetically:
* Anaheim – Carolina
* Chicago – Edmonton
* Florida – New Jersey
* New York – Pittsburgh
* St. Louis – Washington
Big thanks to Andrew M. Greenstein and his invaluable website, The Hockey Uniform Database, for those images.
~~~

Thanks for the setup, James. Now, it’s up to you to decide. If you haven’t yet clicked on the poll, there is the survey and a few quick questions. Please let us know what YOU think of the jerseys, in a simple rating system (like we did with the NFL jerseys). We’ll be back with the results in a couple of weeks, so vote early (and often).

pickin the unis conf champs

After a good 3-1 week (although all the teams I wanted to win did) picking “by the better uniform” (Colts, Saints & Jets won — only the Cowboys let me down), we head into the NFL Conference Championships with a 5-3 record. One of the games today is an easy choice — the other, much more difficult. We’ll tackle the difficult one first because, well — its the first game of the day. So here goes:

AFC Championship: Jets @ Colts 3:00 EST (CBS)

Fun factoid: Two teams with ONLY two colors in their uniform, and one of them is white. We haven’t seen that in a big game in a long time. And one thing is for certain: we know what both teams will be wearing in this game. Peyton and the Colts will be wearing their blue over white, a uniform that has existed, basically unchanged, for over 50 years. One of my personal all time favorite uniforms, it’s really the best one left in the playoffs…or is it? Due to the weird way some players wear their jerseys (because of how they tape the jersey to the pads, resulting in odd shapes for the stripes) — or the new Reebok jersey almost completely truncates the stripes — will this slight breach of jersey etiquette be enough to make me NOT pick the Colts? Were they playing any other team, the answer would be an absolute “NO.”

However, the Colts are playing the J-E-T-S…Jets! Jets! Jets!, who have a gorgeous uniform in their own right. The only problem, and it’s not a small one, is the damn Jets continue to wear the wrong socks. With the white pants, they need GREEN top socks, like they wear with the green jerseys. The only other problem I have with the Jets uniform, like the Colts, is the new cuts make their once beautiful sleeves look more like epaullettes.

Still, a battle of two classic and timeless uniforms that look almost as good today as they did when they met back in Super Bowl III. In an extremely tough call, I have to go with the blue and white.

The Pick: Colts

~~~
NFC Championship: Vikings @ Saints 6:40 EST (FOX)
Although that photo is from a 2008 game in New Orleans, don’t expect the Saints to wear white today. Nope, they’ll be decked in their official home black over gold, which is a good looking uniform, despite messing up my OCD with their 3 different shades of gold.
The Vikings, unfortunately, have the worst uniform of the remaining teams in the playoffs. Yeah, that’s not a good look, what with the bumper stickers and the non-linear striping with the ‘broken’ pattern. If the Vikings could have dialed it back to something like this, we might have a closer contest.
Unfortunately, it’s not even close. The Black and Gold will leave the modern uniform in the dust…or the artificial carpet fibre flakes.
The Pick: Saints
Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: Fitting that today’s scoreboard comes from the “Deep Freeze” host, Ricko, who lends me this old one from The Ricko Files. At least one of the teams pictured is playing today, wearing basically the same uniform as they wore back then. That’s awesome. Ready? Guess The Game From The Scoreboard. Date, location and final score, please, and be sure to link to your answer. And, as always, if you enjoy the game, please send me some new scoreboards! Drop me a line. Thanks!
With most of the UW contingent departing the Twin Cities today, many of us missing one or both of the NFL games, at least we can rest serene in the knowledge that we were at the Deep Freeze. All except Mike, that is. Here’s Rick:
Life’s ups and downs come to us all. Inconveniences, dsiappointments. Y’know, like how you were unable to make it the Uni Watch Deep Freeze.
And with that, here’s your “color” Sunday Benchies.
Our next round of Uniform Tweaks, Concepts and Revisions is upon us again. We’ll be examining all sports now. So, if you have a tweak, change or concept for any sport, send them my way.
~~~

We begin today with Jed L. Herrera who’s bringing us some basketball concepts:

Hi, gotta to say that I love the uniwatch site and this is the first time I have come across your reader uniform submissions. Well that grabbed my attention. I did NBA uniform tweaks in the past and now I can come back to them again.

Anyway here are some:

Next up is a man who simply goes by “Tony,” and Tony has some ideas for the Denver Broncos:

Hey, love the blog!

For my first ever tweak I decided to update the Broncos uni. Elway may not have won his first Super Bowl until the old blaze orange beauties were retired, but the overly futuristic current issues Denver are sporting have way too much nonsense going on and have got to go. For this back to basics update I didn’t do much to mess with the old uni’s formula, I just strove to make a more modern, streamlined version of the Bronco’s iconic old threads. I got my main inspiration for this remake from what is quite possibly, in my humble opinion, the greatest uni ever created: that of the Netherlands National Soccer Team. (Try to give soccer some love on Uni Watch this summer during the World Cup!)

Here’s the update.

Thanks for checking out my tweak and keep it up!

~Tony

Our next submitter is Masao Okazaki, who has some VERY intersting concepts for the Bills, Bengals and Falcons:

Here are some uni tweaks I drew. I used to draw football uniforms when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s, but hadn’t drawn any since then until I became a member of Uniwatch last year.

I decided to start with the Bills, since everyone agrees their uniform is
the league’s worst. Anything I came up with couldn’t be any worse, right? I never liked their helmet emblem, so got rid of it. And because I’m a life-long Vikings fan, I decided to give the helmet some buffalo horns. With the horns alone, the helmet looked look a bit sparse, so I added a Rollerball-inspired blue to the bottom and back. Because the main crime of the current Bill’s uniform is fussiness, I decided to use large blocks of color for the sleeves and body of the jersey, a unicolor pants stripe, and solid color hose. I brought back the early helmet emblem for the sleeve. Finally, I chose a font for the numbers and NOB which looked similar to the Bills’ wordmark. The home and road uniforms are similar, with the blue and white reversed.

I’ve always like the Bengals helmets but always thought their jerseys
never went far enough with tiger stripe motif. The trouble, though, are
the stripes are too narrow and might be hard to distinguish at a distance. I decided, therefore, to widen the stripes on the helmet and continue them onto the backs of the jersey only, as on a real tiger. The home uniform has black stripes on an orange field. I switched to orange stripes for the road uniform, since black stripes are more associated with zebras.

Finally, the Falcons. I hate piping and feel it adds very little to a uniform. Instead, I’ve been experimenting with using large blocks of color, in this case, on the jersey and on the helmet. The home jersey is red and black, and the road jersey is red and white.

Thanks,
Masao Okazaki

~~~
Closing down the show today is Jeff Shirley, who’s been just pumping them out — he’s back today with two NFL (Jags & Ravens) and one NBA (Sac Kings) for us:
Phil,
Thanks for including me again. Here are some more NFL and NBA submissions for teams I believe need the most help. For the Jaguars, I combined elements from their old jerseys and their disastrous new jerseys and I felt the results came out pretty favorable. The Ravens were next, as I combined a classic stripe pattern to their sleeves and pants to give them a more old school look. My next submission is for the Sacramento Kings, (who’s uniforms have gotten progressively worse over the years) so I integrated elements from their glory days of the Chris Webber era to their current set.
Thanks again for all you do.
Jeff Shirley
~~~

That’s all for today. Don’t forget about the Official NFL Jersey Tweaks Contest too, which is separate from the normal uniform tweaks section. Keep them coming, and if you have a uniform or set of uniforms you have concepted, send them my way.

~~~~~~~~~~
Everyone, enjoy the games today — and to everyone who was at the Deep Freeze, get home safely!
Have an excellent Sunday.
    Looks like “Washington Capitals” isn’t an option in the survey for “road jersey you like the least”.
    Colts also get the nod for wearing grey facemasks. Wish the Jets would. As good as the Saints looks, with a few minor tweaks they’d look even better. Need stripes on the pants…and jerseys. Could use the Vikings throwbacks as well.
    Kind of suprised this didn’t make the ticker, but the Bruins broke out the Winter Classic Uni’s yesterday against the Senators. I’m thinking this was an attempt too get the team out of their recent slump.
    Gallery here.
    The Colts gray facemask is the reason the Jets have the better uniform.
    (insert 3 paragraph anti-gray-mask rant here)
    White jerseys at home! I pity the poor equipment managers who have to lug two sets of jerseys around on the chance the home team wears their alts, but that’s just too bad for them. I want a return to the way it was when I grew up and you got to see a different color jersey on the opponents each game. Perhaps they could limit the home team’s alts to only Sunday games or no more than ten times each year to keep them more of a special event if going back to white at home.
    Either way, Dallas, Philadelphia, Edmonton and Buffalo have the worst home jerseys.
    Great Bills concept! The Falcons concept is almost infinitely better than what they currently wear, but still not quite up to any of their twentieth-century sets.
    Wish the Saints would use the gold from their helmets as their only shade of gold. Seems like its almost a mix of the gold they use for their uni numbers and pants…Also I was playing Madden 10 the other day and noticed that the Jets had an all green sock as one of their uniform options. Sorry no pics.
    if u want to see hockey teams wear white@ home then check out the AHL or ECHL. AHL-all white jersey @ home most of the time(except alts games),ECHL splits their season 50-50(i part of season darks @ home /then whites @ home) not sure which happens first though
    NEWS YOU WOULDN’T EXPECT…
    Final Day of U.S. Pond Hockey Championships at Lake Nokomis rained out.
    Honest.
    How’d the Deep Freeze go, you ask? I leave that for Paul to tell. And he has lots of stories, I know.
    I’ll just say it was fun. Really a great time all the way around. Big turnout for the gathering (probably around 40), lots to see and learn at the Bonspiel and Pond Hockey (50 degrees warmer than last year and, as I said, rain of all things). We even shimmied in a little bowling Saturday afternoon before Paul and Phil headed off to first the Gophers vs. St. Cloud State and then the Wild vs. Blue Jackets.
    Most everyone heading home today, but Paul (with me tagging along) will be meeting three unique collectors and/or sports historians, after which we’ll watch the NFL Conference Championships in one or more social establishments with, hopefully, tons of local color.
    Busy day to end a busy three days.
    Holy sheep shit Jeff Shirley. I’ve been drawing the Ravens’ helmet and pants stripes like that for ten plus years.
    Good lookin out.
    Personally, I like the fact that the gold on the Saints jersey doesn’t match the pants/helmet shade (the old gold shade). It gives their uniform a quirk, somewhat like what the Cowboys have.
    If the Jets were still wearing Kelly Green, I’d give them the nod. With their current nondescript shade, gotta go with the Colts.
    I like colored uniforms at home in the NHL. I think it makes home teams come out. And think about it, no Broadway BlueShirts, no Habs in their legendary reds at home. I understand the tradition but lets be honest, isn’t great the see the hawks at home in their iconic red sweaters.
    I believe white jersey’s, ultimately all look alike, and it makes sens to have teams wear their distinctive colors at home.
    Plus the white at home rule in the NHL only began in 1970, so, it’s not like colors at home where a brand be concept. In fact, it’s even more in line why the nhl’s tradition.
Great Bills concept! The Falcons concept is almost infinitely better than what they currently wear, but still not quite up to any of their twentieth-century sets.
Agreed on the Falcons. I’d lose the rollerball stripe on the Bills helmets, but I liked the rest of the uni.
    And those Bengals unis are better than what they wear now. Nice ideas.
    Jed, I like your T-Wolves jersey. But please, please, don’t advocate the SoD in the NBA. It looks bad enough in the college game.
    Jeff and Tony, nice work.
    I love Masao’s designs. They illustrate perfectly how to get around modern jersey construction without being “fussy” and how to look good in a modern way – not trying to hold on to old ideas, like northwestern stripes – and keeping everything balanced. I too think we should sometimes look to the original Rollerball movie for clues about new directions in uni design.
    I LOVE white at home in the NHL. It’s easier to tell from far away (supposing you’re trying to watch TV in a bar) which two teams are playing. The home team is obvious due to the center ice logo, and the road team will be wearing their colors.
    I think the NFL can get away with “team’s choice” at home because helmets are generally not variable. But white at home would be just fine in football, thank you kindly.
    By the way, Mr Hecken, did you ever receive my mock-up? I sent it last Monday, and I am surprised I didn’t see it this weekend.
    I’m in favor of white at home in hockey. And Buffalo in their 80s and early 90s whites- one of the best.
    Growing up, the only time I ever saw a white Blackhawks sweater was either on the street or at the UC due to no televised home games, so it has its allure. Even tho I like the red sweater better, white at home avoids the repetitive always red vs. white matchup. Like with the White Sox uniforms, I need some color in my life. And a black jersey is not what I mean.
    Rick G., I respect your take, you make good points, and it’s all just a matter of opinion, of course, but I completely disagree.
    Yes, White At Home is what I grew up with so indeed that plays a part in my preference for its return, but, like Phil, I simply associate white jerseys with the good guys in hockey–the home team. The logo shines and is distinct on the white background, the players seem more identifiable, they even seem to move more swiftly! Clean, crisp, confident white.
    The road jerseys are all a bit bleak to my eyes. Dull. Heavy. Players are interchangeable. Sluggish. The logos are buried. The bad guys wear black, right?
    NHL: White At Home. Yes.
    I love the coloured jerseys at home, at least for Calgary, where you can have the “C of Red” and you’re wearing the same colour jersey as the team.
    link
    With white jerseys at home, you’re either wearing a different jersey than the team, or you’re doing a white-out (which IMHO belongs to Winnipeg).
I know this isnt related but does any one else hate how college basketball players wear tshirts under their jerseys?
I don’t even follow basketball at all but it drives me nuts too. Sort of reminds me of that one kid who wears a t-shirt in the pool.
    While we’re on the topic of white jerseys, I still find it interesting that only the Leafs have a white alternate rather than a coloured alternate.
    I guess we won’t see any white alternates as long as they’re worn on the road, but it would be interesting to see what creative things teams would come up with for white alternates.
    Incorrect, the Dallas Stars as well.
    (Sigh, their uniforms are SO boring now. I liked the All-Star-turned-Star template, and they look good in green.)
    Your argument that all white jerseys look alike is actually an argument for the home team wearing the white uniform. That way, you can see the variety of colors worn by visiting teams. The NBA adheres to this philosophy — except for the Cavs who seem to wear a different uniform every day.
    Anyone else annoyed at how Mark Sanchez cuts the sleeves on his jersey? Can’t he order the Peyton Manning/Bret Favre cut?
    If i’m objective and keep my emotions/biases out of it, dark at home is the right answer based on the history/tradition and practicality for equipment guys.
    But i have to to say, the red wings wearing red at home still doesn’t look right to me. I love seeing them in those bright whites.
    I think the OHL does white in the first half, darks for the 2nd half. They don’t have any 3rds this year due to Reebok pushing them around with the edge conversion.
    One off-topic thought I’ve never seen addressed; in the classic video of Earl Weaver’s rant, why the hell are the NOB and numbers on the Orioles’ uniforms in black?
    That’s actually the reason they switched. Not some BS about boosting dark (non alt) jersey sales. The regular darks have always outsold the whites about 2:1, even during the whites at home era. They didn’t expect that to change.
    Equipment managers wanted to only carry one set, and teams wanted to cut down on fuel costs and security hassles, all of which were solved by going to darks at home.
    I’ve been rubbed raw a couple of times, both from jerseys and screen-printed t-shirts. I don’t think I’d want to mess with band-aids. I wear plain Ts under what few jerseys I have, and if I get a screen-printed T that irritates me there, I get rid of it.
    I’ve been rubbed raw a couple of times, both from jerseys and screen-printed t-shirts. I don’t think I’d want to mess with band-aids. I wear plain Ts under what few jerseys I have, and if I get a screen-printed T that irritates me there, I get rid of it.
Ok, so today I have seen some of my friends on facebook joining two groups. 1) Say NO to the new Spartan logo 2) The old Spartan logo.
    I have seen no group that are in favor of the new Spartan logo. Wish I had a bunch of merchandise with the old Spartan logo on it, I could make a mint.
    So my senior year in High School, I was looking at Central Michigan University as one of my schools to go to. I was managing the football team in high school and wanted to in college as well. My coach got tickets for my family and me to go see a game. We are sitting in the parking lot before the game and these three hoodlum looking guys come walking across the parking lot. My dad said “Well their go the campus hoodlums.” So we get in the game and on of the hoodlums was Novo.
    I’m seeing a sequel to Bull Durham here…
    There have been some conference championship games where they put the visitors name in one of the endzones. I could see the Colts not liking the idea, but it would have been fun if they did the endzones the way they were painted in Super Bowl 3.
    I’ll bet Don Shula and Earl Morrall are smiling today.
    What was Jake Byrne (87 on the Miami Hurricanes) doing in his jersey on the AFC championship trophy stage? He’s not a major player on the hurricanes so I’m guessing he either emanated from a coach’s sperm or swallowed some. Any ideas?
    The “stretchy” jerseys have a matte finish, so the light doesn’t shine off them like the Colts other jerseys
    Anybody want to comment on the color-on-color Milan Derby (soccer) today? Talk about a battle of vertical stripes! Red with black stripes over white shorts versus Blue with black stripes over black shorts. Pics over at soccernet.espn.go.com.
    As for hockey sweaters – nah on white at home.
    The best looking Original Six sweaters are the dark versions – Rangers, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Bruins, Canadiens, Maple Leafs all look best in their blues, reds [2], blacks, reds [or rouge, blanc et bleu], and blues.
    And FYI, the the best looking Fishsticks jersey happens to be the ’80’s blue, which is a bit lighter blue than the present colour. Have many memories of Nystrom, Gillies and Smith pounding the opponents [especially those wearing orange and white] wearing those Nassau County colours.
    Anyone else notice that Childress’s headset has Motorola markings on it today (the Motorola M on the earpiece and the Motorola script near the mic)? I don’t recall that being the case earlier in the season.
    In the divisional finals it would be last week with Romo & Favre and also Sanchez & Flacco. If you meant conference finals that might take a bit more research.
    I’d like to see the Saints win, since they’ve never been in it. This despite the wise-ass remark by a high school acquaintance of mine who lives in NO and called Tony Romo “Tony Homo” after the loss last week. Win with class..love with class, she hasn’t learned that yet.
    Having said that, I’m also counting the minutes til the “Will he come back” comments start, ‘specially since his limp is so pronounced in the 4th quarter.
    Brees vs Manning would be a shootout.
    Brees has done great for NO, Rivers the same for SD. A win-win, I’d say.
    PS how many obligatory Kardashian shots have their been today? The Saints go to the SB, sisters have a store in Miami, made for media-heaven storyline.
    Here’s my suggestion for the NHL: color-on-color, with the home team wearing white (or a differently colored alternate) in case of a conflict (e.g. Red Wings vs. Blackhawks). The only reason leagues went to dark vs. white was so teams would be differentiated on black and white TV. Since B&W TV is obsolete now, why should uniform policies still reflect its influence?
    The Super Bowl will certainly look fairly sharp, but what about the related materials? Is this the best logo matchup we could have had? Or would the Cowboys have made a better NFC rep, or the Packers? Should the Bolts have beaten the Jets?
    Need a smoke after that one?
    Colts uni not “unchanged” after 50 years. For a while in the 1980s they wore silver pants at home (with numbers on the pants inside a horseshoe as I recall). Glad they are back to basic blue and white. The plague of the 3rd color is a bummer most times. The best uniforms are the simplest with just white and one color — Yankees, Tigers, Red Wings, Celtics, Penn State, Alabama.
    Would be interesting to do a poll on teams white vs. dark jersey. Some jerseys look much better in white (e.g. Bruins). Would be interesting to see if people here think overall the whites or the darks are better across the board.
    I was thinking the same thing.
    Generally I prefer whites, (fellow Blackhawks fan James’s article is exactly why I’ve owned a white Roenick jersey since ’95 or so) but feel that the Bruins’ best unis are in black.
    It’s all about the yellow socks, and the NHL does not currently allow the same socks for home and away (iirc). Especially since they brought back the yellow shoulder yokes, I really dig the blacks.
