That’s Ad-Tastic!

f1.jpg

Several readers have recently written to tell me about Vintage Ad Browser, a site featuring thousands of all print ads, broken down by category. As you might expect, the “Sports” listing is a gold mine of classic old stuff. I’ve sifted out the best material from the 1920s through the ’50s — check it out:

• Here’s a 1925 sneaker ad. Note that the player at far-right is wearing a swastika. (As we’ve discussed before, the swastika was a common graphic symbol in the pre-Nazi era. For details, look here.)

• No swastika here, but I really like this old Keds ad. And check out this one for PF Flyers!

• Remember this experimental Plexiglas facemask? Turns out it was featured in an old Rawlings ad!

• So much to like in this Wheaties ad featuring Ducky Medwick. I especially like the multicolored stars at the bottom.

• Here’s another great Wheaties ad. I particularly like the quote marks on the slogan.

• Lots of spectacular post-style illustrations on this page.

• Love all the clubs shown in this 1930s Macgregor golf ad.

• Oh man, it just doesn’t get any better than this.

• I love old produce labels — especially when they’re sports-themed.

• Here’s a weird one: Bob Feller, in full uniform, on a bicycle.

• Speaking of bikes, check out this beauty.

• There’s something really creepy about this football player checking out people’s socks.

• Never heard of this ball manufacturer before. Love that “Permahyde” mark at the bottom.

Best. Cycling. Illo. Ever.

• As most of you know, I love bowling. The interesting thing about this ad, aside from it being gorgeous, is the little “Hale America” note at lower-right — that’s the same initiative and “Health” logo that many baseball teams used as a sleeve patch in the 1940s.

• Over the years I’ve run lots of tobacco ads showing athletes smoking, but I don’t think I’d seen this one before.

• The current discussion about certain types of cleats possibly causing knee injuries (Wes Welker, e.g.) is interesting in light of this old Spot-Bilt ad.

That’s enough for today — I’ll share more of these soon. Thanks to everyone who told me about this great site.

IMPORTANT! Membership News: I’ve had some major PayPal hassles of the past few days. As a result, I’ve had to make some changes:

1) I have a new PayPal e-mail address: uniwatching at gmail dot com.

2) I can no longer offer extra raffle entries as a membership benefit — sorry.

3) I ran a membership promotion on Monday, and lots of you signed up (thank you!). If you’re one of those new enrollees from Monday and feel the loss of the extra raffle entries is a bait-and-switch dealbreaker, get in touch with me and I’ll refund your membership fee.

4) I will definitely give away that Jags box, probably next week, but the giveaway is no longer tied to the membership promotion.

Cooperstown Contest Reminder: Remember, I’m currently accepting design submissions for the Cooperstown Hawkeyes primary logo. Details here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: New 10th-anniversary logo for the Brooklyn Cyclones (with thanks to Terence Kearns). ”¦ Another wonderful PR moment for the Mets. ”¦ Big bootleg jersey bust in Ohio (with thanks to Jason Hillyer). ”¦ Sorta creepy football action figure here (with thanks to Nathan Haas). ”¦ Keith Winney spotted this vintage Browns cardigan with NFL-logo buttons at a thrift shop in Prescott, Arizona. He didn’t buy it, so it’s still available — only $7.50! ”¦ In a vaguely related item, Kelly Hellman spotted this baseball glove ad in a Denver antiques shop. ”¦ Looks like the Warriors have their uni history documented on the wall of their practice facility (as noted by Roger Faso). ”¦ The first-ever Monday Night Football game is now available on YouTube (major find by Chad Todd). ”¦ New logo — or at least logo-in-development — for the NASL (with thanks to Kenn Tomasch). ”¦ David Teigland was nice enough to send me this pair of Minnesota “Meat Raffle” lottery tickets. I don’t care how big the prize might be — no way I’m scratchin’ those off. ”¦ Andrew Cosentino reports that Orioles catcher Matt Wieters has changed his uni number from 15 to 32. ”¦ These new anti-concussion helmets are really getting out of hand (with thanks to Jack Krabbe). ”¦ “I ordered a new Jacoby Ellsbury jersey (in hopes they don’t trade him), so I got a new #2 jersey,” says Ben Hendel. “Unlike the other BP jerseys I’ve seen, this one came with the normal heat-fused ‘fuzzy’ BOSTON across the front, but the name and number on the back are stitched on. I’m curious to see if this will be the BP jersey for 2010, or if they just don’t have any heat-fused Ellsbury in stock since he just changed his number.” ”¦ Hmmm, compression gear for golfers — how soon before John Daly gets his own line of those? ”¦ What are those little numbers on the back of Wayne Chism’s sneakers? “They’re the numbers of his four teammates who were arrested and suspended (#1 Tyler Smith, #23 Cameron Tatum, #33 Brian Williams, #21 Melvin Goins),” explains Josh Williams. ”¦ Gumball helmet king Bill Jones reports that his wife, Cathy, has been bitten by the DIY bug: “She recently made these draw-string backpacks out of old jerseys. She used the team logo, kept the league logos on, and used the arms to make pockets on the inside. They’re smaller and less bulky than regular backpacks. Not included in the photo, but another neat idea, is using old Pop Warner and Little League jerseys for these bags. She has already done a few of those as well.” ”¦ Several readers noted that Donald Driver wore the stretchy in the first half on Sunday but switched to a normal jersey in the second half. ”¦ Sir Saint lives! (Big thanks to Steven Johnston.) ”¦ Throwbacks on tap tomorrow night for IUPUI (with thanks to Mike Miller). ”¦ Really nice timeline of Capitals goalie masks here (with thanks to Matthew Windsor). ”¦ Patrick W. snapped this photo the other day at a Dallas grocery store. “As you can see, they got just a couple of the Cowboys uniform details wrong,” he says. ”¦ Awesome 1962 letter to Maple Leafs players about training camp here (nice find to Chad Todd). ”¦ Lots of Olympics info and photos on the Polo site. ”¦ Tuesday’s installment of “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” featured an interesting school mascot tidbit (with thanks to Anil Adyanthaya). ”¦ Oooh, all you Pennsylvania folks, check out this American Legion patch. ”¦ And speaking of patches, dig this Pat Patriot beauty (thanks, Ricko). ”¦ Hmmm, a Pirates minor leaguer with Under Armour logo creep. Does UA have a MiLB deal? News to me (as noted by Chris Weber). ”¦ Looks like Henrik Lundqvist has straight-hemmed his jersey. ”¦ Portsmouth Manager Avram Grant wore a Nike jacket during yesterday’s match against Coventry. “Nothing too weird about that, except that Portsmouth’s apparel supplier is Canterbury of New Zealand,” notes Mike Miller. “Does Canterbury not make a suitable jacket?”

I remember Pennsylvania balls well. They made the preferred ball that we used for stick ball. We called them “Pennsy Pinkys” — I’m not sure if that was the actual brand name or our nickname. They also made a prized basketball with alternating color/white panels in the early 70s (there were several color options). These balls were great because almost anyone could palm them if they were slightly damp. Accordingly, if the schoolyard had damp pavement, everyone became Connie Hawkins.

That Mets negligence case has it all, even the Ben Dreith defense. I wonder if it says, “… giving him the business.” in the court filing. Love it.

I posted that link in the comments Monday, though I got the feeling it went fairly unnoticed.

What cracks me up about the story is that these jerseys supposedly looked like the real Reebok replicas.

I see so many ugly jerseys that either don’t look remotely close to a replica (goofy misplaced color blocks, wrong fonts, etc) or the JCPenney replica-replica Reebok jerseys that have helmets or logos on the sleeves instead of proper stripes and have a team logo on the yolk instead of the NFL logo.

But hey, licensing laws are licensing laws. You can make your own knock-offs, just don’t try to profit from it!

A PayPal thing. If entries are free, can’t give extra entrees to people who have, by definition, paid for the privilege by joining.

The old “no purchase necessary” thing we see so often.

My thinking was not so much that is was a great looking uni, but that the jerseys would look great with jeans, worn more like a sweater (don’t mean a hockey sweater). lol.

And I could see the stripes being so prominent if “Swarm” referred to bees. But it’s in reference to mosquitos (as seen in all variations of the logo).

I completely understand and hold not an ounce of ill will towards you. It is ebay/paypal that so irritates me.

In their judgment it is perfectly ok to charge ebay fees on an item and then to REQUIRE that the item be paid for via paypal and again charge a fee. So double dipping by ebay/paypal is fine and is REQUIRED, but having little raffles every once in a while really gets their ire up. I am sure it is only because they have not yet devised a way to collect a fee off of the raffle, in which case they would be fine with it!

Why does everyone have to made out to be a crook, or a conniver? PayPal handles a ton of money ever day and they want to protect that by being careful. Having spent a dozen years around Native American Gaming, I know the laws, regs and definitions involved in gaming—even for the simplest of things—are at once very general and still very specific.

So PayPal is careful about what kind of transactions they process…for obvious legal reasons. That makes them bad guys?

And I’m NOT saying Paul screwed up, no way. It’s a really minor, low level point that almost no one realizes unless they’ve had occasion to deal with the regs on such things. 99% of the people out there wouldn’t have realized the issue, either.

What PayPal DID do that was jerky was be such dicks about it. All they really had to do was explain the situation and ask UW to comply. They got out the noose way to quickly. THAT we should bitch about.

Although, I suppose if someone wants to rail against PayPal for some other reason, this does give them an opening.

According to a Swarm fanatic on the CCSLC, the Swarm introduced the blue version of the striped jerseys last season. The white version is new for this year.

i’ve mentioned a few times here in the comments about how quirky selanne is with his equipment. he’s always changing between brands of his skates, gloves and sticks (every month or so). yet his helmet is the same model he’s had for most (if not all) of his career. well, i can’t find a really great shot, but now he is wearing a warrior glove on his left hand, and a bauer glove on his right. best pic i could find is #10 in this gallery (also can catch a glimpse of it in pic #14 (left hand), and pic #5 (right hand)) :

    link

Can’t any minor league teams buy equipment and sign deals with whomever they want? Portland Beavers used to use adidas for all their equipment, switched to Nike last year…

Yuma High School was in my school’s athletic conference in the 90s, and their basketball and wrestling teams wore prison stripe warm-ups.

    link

The reason behind Avram Grant’s Nike jacket might stem from the fact that the European division of Canterbury of New Zealand went into administration last year.

It might be a leftover from his Chelsea days but they wear Adidas as I recall.

Major props on putting the old Monaco Grand Prix poster at the top. I absolutely LOVE the art deco style of those posters — so much so that I have a print of link on my wall.

Love the timeline of Washington Caps goalie masks, but put me squarely in the “old school” category. I like the low-tech, homespun look of the early masks – less is more. Yeah, the new ones are done by professional airbrush artists and are works of art, but…

Best line from that Toronto Maple Leafs training camp letter: “Let’s be ready for the competition and not sorry.”

This is likely just a jacket he found somewhere.

For years now all the team gear you see on EPL sidelines have the wearer’s initials on the right breast, in pretty large letters. It makes a lot of sense, there has to be tons of identical clothes laying around team locker rooms, with the intitials there one can quickly find your stuff.

Chelsea has been adidas for a while. The new MLS gear (an all adidas league) has a couple of teams in the horrible “sports bra” design that Chelsea sports.

I LOVE the old racing ads. Any art history types want to confirm that the featured poster would be described as art deco?

He either un-tucks his jersey after rounding 1st base, or in this particular case, around 3rd base en route to home plate:

Sorry, to be more specific… that image I posted was not the same home run as the “pin dropping” homer.

My apologies if this is old news.

Thus far, there are only three football movies, I consider, worth watching. This, could be my fourth.

I was at that Brewers game, so i think its cool seeing that pic on the cover. I am not a Brewers fan (or Giants fan who they were playing)…but it was pretty neat being there live to see it. He did untuck after rounding first base and then started pointing to home plate so the others would be ready for him. We started out in the $8 Bernie’s Terrace seats, but by the time he hit that in the 12th we were about 5 rows from the field.

For all those waiting to see the new Devils Christmas tree jersey, feast your eyes on the link.

There’s a good chance that the Devils will be wearing that very jersey.

Used to keep them in the garage, but a mouse chewed on the shoestrings, and…well, you just can’t find teal replacement shoestrings very easily, can you?

I saw it last week, very entertaining and a good look at what football, and TV football, looked and sounded like in that era. Also fun to watch Tommy Lee Jones as a left guard (and a very good one).

By the way, it’s also worth checking out the complete telecast of the first Monday Night Football game Paul linked to today; not only shows the whole game but also the ABC intro with the cheesy music, a good 10 minutes of Cosell/Jackson/Meredith lead-in, and the commercials! Great stuff!

I had a pair of Avias. They were without a doubt the most comfortable and most durable basketball shoes I’ve ever had.

I must have gotten them before that ad came out because if I had seen that, I never would have bought them.

    Quick question:

Are there other NCAA Hockey teams that use helmets that mimic their football teams?

I know Michigan obviously does, as does Notre Dame (not always). Any others?

    Oh, in other news:

Dear Uni Watch and assorted readers therein who actually like me:

I’m taking the most notorious class at UO this term– Info Hell. I have 10 weeks to complete a 100-page paper.

    Mmm.

So, instead of taking one of the topics already proposed by the professor, I came up with my own (the only guidelines were that they had to be recent and they had to be a public policy issue). I’m going to end up writing that paper on whether or not governments should fund athletic venues on the basis of economic development.

(This will explain why I probably won’t comment here frequently this term.)

So, do any of you wonderful Uni Watch readers have expertise in this area? (No, Phil, Citi Field does not count as “expertise”, even if you feel like you should own the naming rights to it because we’re all paying for it.) I need to interview three people for my project and I’m trying to corral these sources as soon as possible.

    Thanks,

    Kenny

No photos yet but Xavier and UNC-Charlotte are going color-on-color AND template-on-template! Charlotte is in their road green and X is in a new gray alt. Both unis are Nike and both are the same SoD design.

Penn is a famous maker of tennis balls and they apparently had a contract in the public schools I attended in the 60’s and 70’s. We had all Pennsylvania basketballs, – tetherballs, and some weird looking American version of a soccer ball – all rubber; and most memorable were the Pennsylvania rubber footballs. Hard panels, harder rubber laces, and apparently steel reinforced points. I had a classmate once try to catch a pass with his sternum and the pointy plastic missile knocked him over and knocked the wind out of him. Good times.

You have to love this sponsor link

Also check out the United Airlines commercial – you can walk UPSTAIRS to a kitchen, DURING THE FLIGHT!!! (Air travel has gone straight backwards in 40 years…)

Also got a great card in the mail from the Brewers – fans holding signs, one says ‘Hey (Last Name)’, other says ‘Did You Get Your 9-Pack (tickets)’ – I have to say their marketing is great…

That’s more like a Red Sox player wearing an Orioles jersey. If he wore a Manchester UNITED shirt, THEN that would be like wearing a Yankee shirt.

Given the circumstances, though, I’d let it slide this time.

Hey that’s right! We had one of those Pennsylvania footballs. Almost broke my toe trying to kick it straight-on style. Couldn’t stand it when Dad zinged a pass at me, either. I was so glad when Nerf balls came out a few years later.

Hey soccer fans (all two of you),

I didn’t follow MLS until ’02. Is this Metro Stars jersey link an alternate from their early years, or is it a fauxback? It has the league logo on the back, but I know that doesn’t mean they wore these in a game. Either way, it was a good deal at the thrift store.

This was not a game jersey. I actually have a bright orange DC United “jersey” from that era made by a really dodgy secondary manufacturer. In the beginning, MLS just signed lots of non-exclusive apparel deals, leading to garish concoctions. The one you’ve got there, though, is definitely more on the tasteful end.

On the warriors practice floor. When Eric Muscleman was coach. He thought it was to dreary for the team. He wanted it bright colors to wake players up and to honor the teams history. So that’s the story behind the jerseys painted all around.

Also with the warriors. Coming in after like 10 straight losing seasons, he wanted to change the culture and atmosphere of the club. He actually did a good job and things started going in the right direction. Too bad he wanted to play to win and the front office wanted the rookies to play more, so he was kicked to the curb.

Maybe this has been covered (though I Googled it to no success) but Pierson Prioleau is wearing #31 for the Saints.

    link

But NFL.com says the Saints have retired #31 for Jim Taylor. What gives?
