Homemade Earflaps Revisited

Hillary-Clinton-BS-Ear-Protector.jpg

I’ve written several times about Earl Battey of the Twins, who in 1963 attached a metal plate to the side of his batting helmet, thereby becoming the first MLB player to wear an earflap.

I’d never seen another player wearing an improvised flap until scrolling through yesterday’s comments, where Larry Wiederecht posted a link to an eBay auction for this 1964 wire service photo.

Wow! Never seen that before, so I immediately e-mailed the photo to uni designer Todd Radom and Hall of Fame curator Tom Shieber, who’d never seen it either. Lots of info to process here — one thing at a time:

• Oliva played on the Twins, same as Battey, so the Minnesota equipment staff had some experience in making this type of helmet attachment. Which begs the question: Did any other Twins wear the improvised flap?

• Hard to be sure what the flap is made of. Metal? Plastic?

• Fascinating to see that Oliva resisted wearing the attachment because he thought it looked goofy. Forty-five years later, we’re going through the same safety-vs.-aesthetics issue with the S100 helmet. Some things never change.

• The caption mentions that Oliva grudgingly wore the flap in batting practice, but it’s not clear whether he ever wore it in a game. Ricko, can you shed any light on this?

• I have never been able to determine exactly when ABC Helmet began making helmets with real earflaps. I had always wondered whether Battey’s improvised flap in 1963 had led ABC to start making flapped helmets in ’64. But judging by the Oliva photo, that’s not what happened. Hmmmmm”¦

Big thanks to Larry for finding this photo — a major piece of the helmet history puzzle.

And now we have a truly ridiculous number of extra-curricular announcements (anything to take my mind off of last night’s ballgame)”¦

Raffle Reminder: I’m currently raffling off three cool posters from Infojocks Sports Graphics. Details here.

About freakin’ time: Many of you have asked me to give the DIY posts their own category/tag/etc. Unfortunately, we were using an old, creaky version of WordPress and had maxed out the number of categories — I couldn’t add any more. But Johnny Ek upgraded us to a new version of WordPress a few days ago and, as you can see in the right rail, our list of categories now includes “DIY Projects.” If you click on that link, you’ll get all our past DIY entries grouped together in one spot. Sorry it took so long to achieve something so simple.

toot.jpg

Twitch, or Twat, or whatever the hell it’s called: Speaking of the tech upgrade, you may have noticed that there’s now a little “Follow us” link on the right side of your browser window. That’s because John has finally dragged me — semi-kicking, quasi-screaming — into the world of Twitter. Each new daily post here on the site automatically generates a new toot with a link to that post, plus I may occasionally flutter during the day, but I don’t expect to do it all that often (I mean, shit, this here web site should be enough of a soapbox for whatever I want to say, right?). Anyway, if you haven’t already done so, feel free to join the party.

And hey, as long as we’re talking about tech stuff: John is currently running some analytics to help us get a better grip on our traffic and readership. You can help by adding the Alexa add-on to your browser (it’s quick and painless, promise) and then filling out the little form thingie when your browser reboots. If you’d rather not, that’s fine; but if you’re willing, Firefox users can add Alexa here, and IE users can find it here. Thanks.

Beefsteak Update: This Sunday’s Brooklyn Beefsteak event is sold out, although I’m told there may be some tickets available at the door. Keep an eye on this page for updates. For those of you who were smart enough to buy tix in advance, I’ll see you on Sunday.

Uni Watch Party Update: We’ll be gathering on Sunday the 15th, 2:30pm, at Sheep Station. Ryan Connelly’s coming all the way from Pittsburgh to attend, so all you NYCers really have no excuse not to show up.

Uni Watch News Ticker: As had been rumored earlier in the week, Ohio State will be wearing throwbacks on November 21st. This photo made the rounds yesterday, although it’s unclear if that’s the design that will be used on the 21st. I’m sure someone will leak the appropriate info shortly. ”¦ Chris Douglas-Roberts has a mighty long NOB (as spotted by James Savage). ”¦ Nicole Haase notes that Marquette’s retired number banners show each number in jersey-appropriate type and colors. ”¦ Steven Tatar sent me 20 more photos from his visit to that varsity jacket factory. ”¦ The Ducks (Anaheim, not Oregon) wore camouflage jerseys during warm-ups on Tuesday, as a military-appreciation gesture (with thanks to John Muir). ”¦ It’s one thing to put a ski jump in an outdoor stadium, but how about inside the Boston Garden? Brian Codagnone, quoting from a museum exhibit at the TD Garden Sports Museum, explains: “In the 1930s, when the ski craze first swept the East, sportsman Walter Brown became obsessed with the idea of hosting a winter carnival at Boston Garden. Stumped by the cost and difficulty of importing snow for indoor use, Brown one day passed a fish market, where he noticed a handsome cod packed in ice that was ‘chopped up so fine it looked like corn snow.’ The merchant showed him his grinding machine and Brown super-sized the concept, ordering larger versions that could handle 500 tons of ice. In December 1935, a five-story ski jump was erected in the Garden rafters and hundreds of amateur skiers showed up, unaware it was intended for professional jumping demonstrations. The concept of indoor slopes and annual ski shows caught on, and were copied at Madison Square Garden and other arenas.” ”¦ Chris Paul has been wearing a captain’s “C” (here’s how it looks on the road). “David West also wore a ‘C’ for the home opener vs. the Kings (it’s hard to see, but it’s there) but he didn’t wear one during the Spurs, Celtics or Knicks road games,” says Jason Hijuelos. ”¦ Check out Henrik Lundqvist’s lastest mask design (with thanks to Matt Harris). ”¦ England’s new rugby kit is the color of the beast (with thanks to Caleb Borchers). ”¦ Truly sensational video clip on old hockey sweaters here (big thanks to Ethan Crooks). ”¦ Mariano Rivera wore a road BP jesey at Yankee Stadium for Tuesday’s workout (good spot by Jonathon Binet). ”¦ I’m still calling it St. James’ Park (with thanks to Matt Beahan). ”¦ What brand are these jerseys? ”¦ Here’s a Sox in shorts photo I hadn’t seen before. Also, note that Moe Drabowski, at far left, is wearing his jersey tucked in, even though that jersey design was meant to be worn untucked (nice find, Phil). ”¦ Eric Romain notes that Sean Avery has already worn three different helmets this season. ”¦ Bill Scrowther found some excellent old photos on Utah’s state history site. Among the highlights: three separate examples of vertical placket lettering (look here, here, and here), a Budweiser-sponsored baseball team, and some very odd basketball pants. ”¦ Check out the second service listed on this page — a cure for logo creep! How awesome would it be if a few thousand jersey owners engaged her services? (Thanks, Kirsten.) ”¦ Further evidence of how corporate footwear deals make everyone behave like douchebags. ”¦ It was a very uni-uneventful World Series, but here’s a great tidbit from AJ Chalifour: All Series long, Mark Teixeira was wearing a pink MLB logo on his jersey.

Paul, if you, or anyone else has any more info on the Buckeye throw-backs, could you shed some light on them?

(Raging debate on Buckeye blogs amongst us Buckeye fans…)

Real quick, not to be nit-picky, but its Chris Douglas-Roberts, not Douglas-Edwards. But yes, thats quite a name.

The Navarro shirts’ logo looks somewhat like the top half of the Zett-sports logo. But they seem to do only martial arts gear… so that can’t really be it.

Rivera’s glove struck me as strange. To my knowledge he’s always been a pitcher. The glove he has on for the work out is a 2-color open web model. It’s definitely not his gamer (which is entirely black and has a closed web), and it is even formally illegal to pitch wearing a 2 colored glove. Is he trying to go the Ankiel way?

Based on the hint of the brand label on the finger I would also guess it’s a Wilson A2000 model, while Mariano wears a Nike branded one during games.
Navarro is wearing Z-Wear link

yup, theyre on the sample page for football. i guess they have a blue alt?

Just for completeness sake, there are two retired numbers for Marquette that aren’t shown – 38 in honor of 38-year trainer Bob Wiegand, and 11 in honor of the Apollo 11 moon flight – MU actually wore a large Apollo 11 patch on its warmups the year after the flight.

The Lundqvist mask is a nice idea, but I was at the game on Sunday and Lundqvist wore his usual mask.

If you click to the 14th photo at this link — link — you will see Henrik in his usual mask.

I’m pretty sure MJ can convince Nike to supply UCF with some unis if he wants. On a similar note, Mike Miller is in trouble with his teammates for wearing Air Zoom LeBron VIIs. I don’t know if that’s taking logo creep too seriously or if it’s merely the first recorded instance of a rivalry affecting footwear.

That White Sox picture with the shorts brings back memories. I used to own a home and away uniform set. I regret getting rid of them.

Jimmie Hall, an outfielder on the 1965 Minnesota Twins, also wore the helmet flap in the ’65 World Series against the Dodgers. I saw it on the MLB network earlier this week, game 6. I believe game 7 is on this afternoon.

    Uneventful Uni-World Series?

Nike undershirts with the swooshes that were displayed in the center of the collars for all the players who wore them from the start of Game 1?

The Phillies wearing the Cool-base jerseys last night when it was about 42 degrees in the Bronx?

Joba wearing the non-Yankee stadium hat? I know this has been going on all season.

You know I used to think MJ was a great person, and now, much like a lot of the other EGOCENTRIC things he’s done, ie quit on his team, come back, etc, this cements his legacy as one of the biggest POS’s in the history of sports.

His son wont wear a sneaker b/c it is not his ‘dad’s’ brand… do you know how many people in this country NEED shoes and cannot afford them? This is sickening and I think Adidas did the right thing.

link is an image of what the actual 1954 Ohio State football uniform looked like. It will be interesting to see how “cutting-edge fabrics and technology” incorporate a 55-year old throwback uniform…

Personally, I think it’s just Nike trying to slap Michigan in the face for switching to Adidas.

Wait, when? He’s been wholeheartedly, unabashedly out for himself since Day One.

Seth in Post 7 is correct. Lundqvist did not where that mask in the game. He wore it for warmups, but found it too uncomfortable to use in the game. Post-game interviews, he said that he hoped they got enough pictures during the warmups for authenticity because he was signing it and donating to charity.

Yup, was gonna mention that I thought Jimmie Hall also wore an improvised flapped helmet for the Twins. Not sure if it was trainer Doc Lentz or equipment guy Ray Crump who came up with the flaps, or it they did it in concert.

No, what’s sickening is that corporate sponsership has gotten to the point where shoes are even an issue. If I’m a player, I want comfortable shoes. Screw the brand name.
Screw the brand name.
The MLB tag on the back of Teixeira’s uniform is not pink, but the color has faded from being washed. If you notice, the sleeve patches have faded during the season, and on some of the players, the patch is visibly lighter than others. I bet the same thing happened to Teixeira’s MLB logo.

“… Check out the second service listed on this page – a cure for logo creep! How awesome would it be if a few thousand jersey owners engaged her services? (Thanks, Kirsten.) …”

Two interesting quotes from Miriam Dym’s Logo Removal Service:

“Clients” can bring items with logos for me to remove to Non*Mart on opening night and I will remove logos right then and there.”

As if they were “Johns” looking for a lil Logo De-Creeping in a back alley?…

    And:

    “Special interventions are sometimes required.”

Ya see, Logo Creeping is an addiction and requires “Special Interventions”! Hahaha!!!

    Great find!!

Imagine the relief in Beaverton now that’s they’re wrested the shoe deal at basketball juggernaut UCF away from adidas.

Whew. Some celebratin’ goin’ on there, I reckon. Probably got girls an’ everything (in other words, a typical Friday at Ken Lay’s Enron).

I was at the game too. My son and I were close to the ice during warmups and he had it on then. We got a big kick out of the “ear thing” because in the old days the mask just covered the face and Plante had his ear showing. Afterwards, I read somewhere that Henrik wasnt comfortable in the new mask and went with his regular one for the game. Kudos to Matt for finding the pic online.

i stated from the time this was first posted on these boards (read from post 200 down if you’d like) i thought this was a test case…jordan & UCF knew something like this was coming before he ever signed his letter of intent

he never intended to wear adidas (or any other brand for that matter, other than jordans) and the matter has simply come to it’s (semi) logical conclusion…the only way for adidas to save face (since there was no way they were forcing jordan’s kid to wear 3 stripes) was to terminate the contract…something im quite sure had been discussed well in advance of him actually taking the court in something other than adidas shoes

I was wondering about the socks. Like, maybe they were trying out different styles before settling on a final striping pattern.

This has been alluded to in the comments before, but MLB ump Joe West has his own line of umpiring equipment called The West Vest:

    link

West was handling home plate duties in game 6, and was wearing what seemed like a pretty conspicuous ad for the product line (it’s absent from the models shown on his website). No screen grab, but you can kinda make it out in the first and sixth photos of this gallery:

    link

Anyone know if this is SOP for West?

Extra note about the Blackhawks store, they use the authentic numbers for all jerseys with NOB, even the replica ones. No crappy screen printed numbers.

Something to do with the The Père Marquette Discovery Award – it is Marquette University’s highest honor. “In the spirit of the discoveries of Père Jacques Marquette, the award honors those who achieve an extraordinary breakthrough that adds to human knowledge or the advancement of humanity”. The Apollo 11 crew received it in 1969. I will do some research to find info on the warm-up patch for my space blog.

Pretty much everyone, even his biggest honks on the WWL, has come on board about MJ. Especially since the embarrassment that was his own HOF speech. Um… I noticed the missing corner AFTER you pointed it out!

So, a home and away set… was that four jerseys and four sets of pants?

No, three. At first, the White Sox wore navy pants that were either knee-length, clam-digger length, or the shorts (once or twice). The shorts were dropped, and late in Bill Veeck’s ownership, they introduced the white pants with a navy stripe. When Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn bought the White Sox after the 1980 season, they wanted to change the uniforms, but learned they had missed the deadline. For the 1981 season, they went with the white pants for all games, with a white jersey at home and a dark blue one on the road (the color seemed to lighten over the years, when they switched from a solid double-knit jersey to a nylon mesh jersey with tiny air-holes, similar to the football jerseys of the time).

SWC Susan (aka Tex) – the first I’d heard of these uni’s was lastnight on 11PM local news on WBNS-10TV Columbus. They showed that same image, saying nothing official had been released by the university, but The Columbus Dispatch had that rendering. This morning I tried to find the rendering, it wasn’t on the Dispatch’s website, but I traced it down to an OSU blog where someone had the same image I linked above, which as far as I could tell was the same image on the news lastnight.

I’m going to disagree slightly. I do think the Broncos are the best of the “modern” designs, but I think a uniform like the Broncos is designed to be single colored. With the side panel lining up with the pant swoosh, it works better as a solid color… all blue or all white, or, though it doesn’t currently exist… all orange.

Then they’d laugh and make me feel like a yokel because I wore comfortable yet inexpensive sneakers (the most I ever paid was $60, and that pair lasted almost nine years).

I wonder if it ever bothered MJ and the other sneaker guys that at one end there are kids making their shoes for pennies, while at the other end there are other kids who can barely afford the shoes but “have to have them.” I’m not a big Stephon Marbury fan, but at least he gets it.

I have a pair of Jordans that I bought for half price, and they were still $100. My Jordans, however, are from something like 1995. And I still wear them for indoor court sports.

I also have a pair of adidas shoes that have begun to fall apart. However, they were incredible court shoes for volleyball. I must have played 90-100 games in them in high school, and they are now showing their wear. When I bought them in 1996, they were $119 and were the latest shoe model. My parents nearly had coronaries in stereo.

Personally, the adidas shoes are way more comfy for everyday use, and I’d wear them all the time if they didn’t look significantly different due to their emphasis on the balls of the feet. And if they weren’t falling apart. LOL

I know this would be career suicide for a coach, but if I were the head coach of the basketball team and adidas told me they were pulling their contract, I’d cut MJ Jr.

Yup, pretty common back then. Besides, the public doesn’t see it because generally gates don’t open until after home team is done with the field.

Those older wool socks (and unis in general) were a helluva a lot warmer. No sense putting on the last layer until you had to. Sometimes guys would put on fresh sanis (or everything fresh) for the game, so they were gonna take off the cleats anyway. Especially when at home because a) as I said, no one saw you hit and take infield, b) you have all your equipment at your disposal at home, not just what was packed, and c) so much waiting around while visitors hit, etc. Some guys would (and still do, I think), shower and redress completely.

OK, since we’ve gone down this path…

We’ve “adopted” a couple kids for Christmas this year. One of them wants a pair of Nike Air Force Ones. At least I think that’s what he wants — my wife told me he wants Air Jordan Air Force Ones, but I don’t think that’s an actual shoe. (Maybe it is, but what the hell do I know?)

The Jeff’s right. Fit’s pretty important. Then, if you’re able, go with them to the store to pick them out. That, to me, would be the fun part…watching the kid’s mind work, knowing he’s getting exactly what he wants. You’ll see some-kinda big ol’ happy smile then, JTH.

Much better, thanks. I would have made the pant stripes navy with gold trim myself, since gold doesn’t really contrast well with white under the sun. Yes, even with the jersey stripes being gold, I still would go with navy/gold on the pants instead of gold/navy.

Marquette Captain Joe Thomas will give Buzz Aldrin, Mike Collins and Neil Armstrong jerseys bearing the No. 11. For the rest of the season Marquette basketball players will wear replicas of the Apollo 11 patch on their uniforms. Simply, I guess it would be any teams with no pants stripes (plain, like Notre Dame or Penn State) or straight parallel pants stripes from top to bottom…would NOT be eligible. That would pretty much cover it, I think. Most team that have done something new pants stripes also have changes jerseys.

I can tell you, as a student at UCF, I’m really excited about the possible/probable switch. I’m an RA and a lot of my residents are athletes (mostly football) and I know for a fact that the only adidas gear they wear is team issued. Everything else is Nike.

Also, all of the current adidas teams (Notre Dame, Tennessee, among others) are for the most part terrible or are programs in decline. And like Phil said, the swoosh attracts talent, I don’t care who you are.

I’m a bit scared for possible redesigns of our athletic uniforms (especially football, as I think our unis are very under-rated IMHO) especially as our teams are not as renowned as those of Florida, Penn State, etc… without strong uniform histories. But nonetheless, I’m still excited.

I’d think “non-straight pant stripes, piping or a side panel” is probably a good enough filter to catch all the modern teams. There’s always going to be a little bit of a fuzzy area.

Nah, side panels could be straight.

As I said, I don’t think there’d be too much arguing about who falls into which category. Pretty much instant accord in an “In or Out” flash card test.

I mean, I suppose Michigan’s roads might be modern…but it’s really not a uni re-design, just a dumb idea for the trim on the roads.

Of course if someone DID vote for their roads—as good or bad—I guess I’d let the vote stand. But they’d have to vote for the whole uni (“Michigan road”). Who wants to get into, “Well I hate Michigan’s road jerseys but like the rest.” Thumbs up or thumbs down. Or leave it off your list altogether.

The results would be interesting, and the “gray-area” ones probably would be low vote getters and disappear on their own anyway, avoiding a bunch of nonsense arguments.

See, I really don’t think this group is as traditionally “bound up” as some think we are. It’s just that when we lump everything together we lean one way. So let’s take the oldies off the table and point to the “newbies” we DO like.

Marquette Captain Joe Thomas will give Buzz Aldrin, Mike Collins and Neil Armstrong jerseys bearing the No. 11. If the Browns stuck to #1 and #4 (and I suppose #7 if they simply MUST have an Alt) it wouldn’t be all bad. No need to go to the “closet full of choices” mode, though. They you equipment becomes head of the costume department (see: Oregon). And no brown pants, please. I mean just look at that season they’d be associated with (meaning 2009).

Actually the best example of an NFL team going “modern” without totally going nuts–or too far afield from they’d worn in the past and still being nicely new—might be the Rams. Or the Broncos, which I’ve already said I’d rate best of the newbies, but their change was far more substantial than the Rams.

My nomination for favorite “modern” football uni is Cal. For some reason they just look good to me, the stripes placement, the colors, and the different cobinations they worn work. My favorite is the yellow jersey w/ blue pants.

I also have to second the nomination for WVU, they are similar to Cal’s and they are among the best looking modern uni out there.

BTW, it doesn’t matter if you call the Bills “traditional” or “modern” because nobody around here is ever going to pick them as a FAVORITE. So let’s just call them what they are, UGLY.

No need to apologize. You probably post here a lot more than I do; I’ve just been really active for the last two days. I would like to point out that I took a piece about MJ’s son and turned it into a discussion about the quality and value of sneakers.

I know this is out of left field, but I also know that Paul enjoys new and exciting ways to cook meat, so here’s what I came up with for dinner tonight. I did a twice-cooked cube steak, in the same manner that you would cook sausage with onions.

You brown the meat in a pan about twice as big as the meat itself. With sausage, you wouldn’t use any fat, but cube steak is leaner so I added some butter. Once the meat is cooked, you add 1/4 onion per serving, coarsely chopped, and sweat it out. When the onions are wilted and beginning to brown at the edges, add some deglazing liquid, reduce the heat to low, and cover for 15-20 minutes. I like to use Guinness, but dry sherry works too. When the liquid reduces most of the way down, cut the meat into bite-size chunks and put it back in the pan, tossing it at high heat until it’s coated.

It’s great with kielbasa or bratwurst, but due to necessity I found out tonight that it’s even better with cube steak. Give it a try, Paul and let me know if it works for you.

And Packers going back to green pants afer a brief flirtation with them in the early ’50s would be pretty radical. For them, anyway.

I’d rather cheer for Campy Russell, but the Bingo Smith shirt does sound good.

Yeah, I thought the Twin Towers set would be cool, but neither big man did much tonight. Between that and missed free throws, that killed the Cavs.

By the way, I kind of enjoyed the outing. The game was good, although I think the level of play isn’t as good as it was in the 80s. The guys seem too big and bulky now. The constant keep-the-ADHD-kids-happy sideshows didn’t bother me as much as I thought they would. Guess I was in a good mood.

That’s a possibility. Regular onions are up there with peppers and pineapple as fruits of the devil for me. Although onion flavoring isn’t bad, just the onions themselves.

It also works with mushrooms or peppers. You could try leeks too, since they’re milder than onions. I remember Alton Brown saying in one episode that you could replace onions with leeks in just about any application.
