Thus Spake Henderson

moses1.jpg

In the beginning, there was Okkonen, and it was Good. Because up until then there had been no record of base ball raiment. And so began the Period of Great Enlight’nment, and there was much rejoicing.

And then, after a number of epochs, Okkonen joined forces with the mighty Shieber of Cooperstowne, and thus the two of them begat Dress’t to the Nynes. And this too was Good, for now the Master’s Wisdomme was available to all, even those who did not have a printed copy of the Illuminated Manuscript.

But as Time went by, certain scholars dared to voice a near-Heresy: The Wisdomme, they said, was flaw’d. In some places it was Mistak’n; in many others it was Inkomplete. And the Master’s colourful engrayvings, which had long been celebrayt’d as powerful tools to convey the Wisdomme to future generations, began to be seen as Too Limit’d, for they showed no Posterior View, nor did they show Fyne Detail, among several other Problemmes. Worst of all, the Master had been so fatigued by the initial compiling of the Wisdomme that he could not continue with the task in subsequent seasonnes. And so there was Diskontente across the land. And this was Not Good.

And then there came Henderson.

Henderson did not claim to proffer the Master’s Wisdomme. Indeed, he did not provide Informations regarding millinery, or trousers, or the all-important stockings, or for any raiment prior to the much-despis’d Age of Synthetux. But he did provide significant Knowledge on the subject of blouses — their colours, their regalia, their strypes. And instead of engrayvings that simulat’d the raiment, he employed a Great Magick that stopp’d time and show’d how the raiment actually look’d, in all its great Scope and Varyetee. And this was Very Good.

Even better, Henderson added new Informations to his Knowledge every 26 moons. And these became known as the Great Updaytings, and the period between them became known as the Time of Much Anticipashonne, so eager were the people to learne about the blouses.

I have journey’d here to informe you, O my children, that the latest Time of Much Anticipashonne has now ended, and the Great Updayting is now upon us. And this is Very, Very Good.

Those benight’d souls who are Unf’miliar with Henderson may wish to study the teachings I present’d at the time of the last Updayting, and may also want to hie themselves to the Sample Informations that Henderson has gen’rously put forth. Those who are already acolytes would do well to proceed directly to the Marketplace.

At this pointe I must acknowledge that this latest Updayting includes a preamble that I myself penned at Henderson’s gracious request. And it was a request I felt privileg’d to grant, so high is my esteem for all things Hendersonian.

Indeed, Henderson’s gen’rosity of spirit knows no bounds, for he has announc’d the following Gifts to the People:

I) Great Fortune will shyne upon ten of our citizens this seasonne, for Henderson shall bestow upon them the latest Great Updayting without imposing any tariff or barter, which should be cause for Great Merriment throughout the land. All who wish to be el’gible for this speculation should dispatch a mess’nger to these coordinates by dusk on Tuesday next. I shall proclaim the ten winners on the morrow. (As is custom’ry, only one mess’nger per citizen, I prithee, except for those who have been induct’d into the Programme of Fellows, who may send up to four.)

II) For those who fail to win the speculation, fear not! For all citizens who read this broadsheet shall be able to secure a Discounte of five dollarres by employing the cryptograph “paulhatespurple” at the time of tariff. I confess that I am not certain of this term’s Meaning, but Henderson’s maneuv’rings are sometimes beyond my ken.

And with that, O my children, I leave you to commence the rejoicing. Remember not to spill mead on your keyboards.

Funny, the Mariners must have hired someone from the “Natinals” to do the story about the “Gladitors” on their website.

I posted a note on the gladitor helmets when Seattle was in Detroit last time. That was a couple of weeks ago.

I picked up the latest edition of Henderson’s book yesterday and with 1800 pages of baseball jerseys, I don’t think I’ll be getting much done at work in the near future. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

On page 37 of the Henderson’s Met’s sample it is showing Bobby Valentine wearing 1990 AIU Opening Day in Japan. I’m sure he meant to say the 2000 opener since Valentine was still with the Rangers until 1992.

From Bill: “I know about that one. Bigtime typo from a misdated photo. I will probably do as I did w third edition and send an errata out correcting this and a few other errors. Note also in mets chapter error in title tbtc to 1999 instead of 69…”

i didn’t check the chapter…but that be “tAtc”? (assuming it’s on the mercury mets) … if i was wrong in assuming, you know what they say…

Perhaps the Mariners could come up with a cool gladiator helmet logo, and paint it on the wall of the bullpen.

    In Henderson I believe!

I’ve had the update for about a week now and still am finding new things every day! Great work Bill…I’d be lost without it!

If the Titans had any guts at all they’d put the names of McNair’s wife and kids on the edge of that decal around the 9.

The McNair patch is alright, but the logo for the local NBC affiliate is badass!

The Seattle gladiator helmet issue is so stupid.

I don’t see how it is any different than when the Red Sox relievers started banging spoons and forks (and the like) on the top of the bullpen in the playoffs last year. In fact, not only was that not banned but the FOX broadcast aimed a microphone out there and made us listen to that crap in the background of the broadcast.

    So basically:

    Either would be appropriate.

I know, I know, that’s harsh…but let’s face this inarguable fact: He wasn’t defending his home, he wasn’t an innocent victim, he didn’t die prematurely because of illness. The guy died in the act of routinely and repeatedly cheating on his wife.

No, but when you go down that road of irresponsible behavior, anything is possible. Like it or not, right and wrong still matters in life.

Never said he deserved to be murdered. God, no. Or that he shouldn’t be mourned.
Was saying maybe we might want to ponder on the circumstances in our tributes.
What if he’d been killed holding up a liquor store?

Saying when is behavior a factor when we decide?
He made decisions to act in a fashion widely considered less-than-honorable.
So is it appropriate to accord him great and public honor in return?

I say by all means remember him as a player, a teammate, a friend.

Ah, but if their demise is a direct result of such behavior?

Contrary to what most big-time athletes apparently believe, marital infidelity generally is not considered an admirable trait. And I (and, yes, I’m speaking personally now) am getting terribly tired of messagex that seem to say, “but if you’re a good enough athlete we’ll have lower standards for you.”

Guess maybe what I’m saying is, under the circumstances, one game wearing the decal is probably perfectly appropriate. To wear it all season—to protract the grieving—kind of implies the loss is society’s. One game recognizes it’s a significant and shocking loss to the Titans.

Yeah, I know that’s arbitrary and subjective. But I’m talking about perceptions. which are by their nature, most times arbitrary and subjective.

#1) – I realize that the NCAA requires that teams were gray (or GREY for you north of the border) gloves. I think it’s been 8-9 years since this took effect. Anyone know the reasoning? The “Why”?

#2) – Why does MLB forbid catchers from personalizing their “hockey” style masks? I remember Yadier Molina used to have a Cardinal on a bat on each side of his mask as recently as 2006. The past 2-3 years? Gone. Replaced by….nothing, really. Anyone know WHY?

If all they are doing is putting a sticker with his uniform # on it, yes.

If they put a big mural of him surrounded by children followed by “WORLD GREATEST ROLE MODEL”, then no.

As I said, for one game, fine.
Because the loss is real, but the circumstances were unfortunate…and disappointing.

In small, small way, it’s just a bit like the Kirby Puckett sexual harassment issue and all. He was the player he was. He’ll be remembered and loved forever for the way he played the game. Granted, no one died because of his bad choices, but the justifiable truth is that his off-field behavior changed things a bit, modified them. And it should.

    A question of degree, absolutely.

As an aside, my problem with the Sean Taylor thing was that by the time it was at its height, you’d have thought he was an all-time NFL great. Frankly, I’m not sure he played enough seasons even to be a Redskin all-time great.

I think that KT was referring back to Sean Taylor specifically because it was the first real memorial after Goodell became commissioner, it many people were of the opinion that he allowed the memorialization to get a bit out of hand as compared to Tags. I don’t speak for KT, but it is my belief that no one, myself especially, is at this point speaking ill of Sean Taylor as man, as it was quite well proven that he had indeed turned his life around, but rather drawing comparisons to a way in which the Decals/black circles/number wearing could get out of hand. As you said the Gene Upshaw memorial is another prime example, with the huge jersey patches that were then reduced to helmet decals after the league realized that it was overkill.

What if Michael Vick met the same fate as Steve McNair?

If it were Brett Favre he’d probably teeter between life and death and the media would constantly wonder whether or not he has the will to hang in there.

Sorry, it’s one of those days.

Anyway, I don’t have a problem with the team doing something. They were his “other family” after all, and family mourns even when a member doesn’t live up to standards. Just don’t make it a league-wide thing and let’s get it out of the endless news cycle.

Yah, I know. Redskins fan want us to believe Sean Taylor was a legend in his time. Solid, more-than-solid, player, but c’mon…

Yes, his death was unfortunate, terrible, undeserved. But sometimes (very often?) the bigger show someone makes of their feelings, the less genuine those feelings really are. It started to ring hollow, affected, by the end of it all.

I’m not dumping on Taylor. Lord knows, I’m not. It got to be a “who can show their grief best”. And so now, instead of remembering HIM, we’re remembering the hoopla.

And THAT’S the real insult to Sean Taylor.

Or they could apply the patch rotated 90 degrees left for right.

    —Ricko
Like I said yesterday, I guess we’re all without sin so we can cast the first stone. Regardless of the circumstances, murder is murder. It’s an awful thing. What if he wasn’t cheating but had a domestic altercation that led his wife into killing him? What then? Would we be saying “he was fighting with his wife, not defending his home so we shouldn’t put a decal on the helmet”?

Pelle Lindbergh was killed while driving drunk. Last I checked, that’s illegal. Yet the Flyers somehow mustered up the dignity to memorialize his #31 on their jersey.

Let’s all stop being so high and mighty and just let the team memorialize the player for his play on the field. Like I said yesterday, he was, and for the most part continues to be, the defining player in the Jeff Fisher, Oilers-to-Titans era.

Personally, I’d be more pissed off if the Titans opted NOT to memorialize him.

Yah, I know. Redskins fan want us to believe Sean Taylor was a legend in his time.

This Redskin Fan doesn’t think anything like that at all. In fact, my first impressions of him were not good. And he didn’t play long enough to really establish any star level. I just don’t feel his situation is analagous to McNair’s. I’m not defending or criticizing his tributes, just commenting on the circumstance of his death.
Couple of questions that have lingered and maybe you wonderful human beings can help me out…

    Thanks people.
No NCAA team wears gray jerseys (normally), so gray gloves make it easier to determine holding penalties.

From what I’ve read, MLB wants to keep some sort of consistency with on-field equipment, so personalizing catchers’ helmets is kept at a minimum. Only official team logos can be used when customizing the helmets.

Ah, but if their demise is a direct result of such behavior?
Direct result? I guess. But he was sleeping on the couch.

Had he ended it with her the night before, she might still have killed him.

Again, Rick, I’m not condoning what he did.

But cheating on your wife – while stupid and counterproductive and scuzzy and a lot of other things – does not usually kill you, nor do you expect it to. You seem to be treading very close to the “he got what he deserved” territory, and I would imagine that attitude is probably reserved for his wife and family – you know, people he ACTUALLY hurt with his behavior. Not you. Not me. Not his teammates. Them.
Guess maybe what I’m saying is, under the circumstances, one game wearing the decal is probably perfectly appropriate. To wear it all season—to protract the grieving—kind of implies the loss is society’s. One game recognizes it’s a significant and shocking loss to the Titans.
So now YOU get to decide how long they wear it? Tributes usually go for a season (though FC Dallas and the Kansas City Wizards and Columbus Crew still wear LH decals for Lamar Hunt), that’s fairly traditional. The Upshaw bit was appropriate for the Raiders for a season and the league for a weekend, I guess. But, again, had they done it all year, that’s their call, not mine.

The tributes to he-who-shall-not-be-named-apparently were among the most extravagant we’ve seen in recent times, and a lot of the ire was because most of us didn’t like the deceased all that much. Looking back on it, we probably should have just let that be, too.
Yeah, I know that’s arbitrary and subjective. But I’m talking about perceptions. which are by their nature, most times arbitrary and subjective.

When it SEEMS like you’re letting your perception stray into the territory of “Everybody should feel this way and you shouldn’t get to see #9 on their helmets after week 1, because then we all have to be reminded that he was a guy who cheated on his wife.”

Well, don’t look at the helmets, then. I never met Steve McNair. I won’t miss him. But his kids and family and teammates get to grieve in their own way, regardless of how you perceive their tributes, arbitrarily or not.

He was retired from the game, and has no connections to the game aside from past glory. If this is the case, every deceased member from every single team should be honoured with a decal for an entire season. I’m pretty sure Sammy Baugh did more in any one season for the Redskins than McNair did in any of his nine seasons with Tennessee.

Yeah, was a direct result. Pretty much. If he’s not boinking her, he’s not with her at that moment. Or ever.

    “Got what he deserved”?

Never REMOTELY suggested that. Never ever THOUGHT it.

I didn’t DECIDE anything about Titans’ plans, just gave my perception of it, my take on how it might be perceived, the message it sort of delivered.

I SAID it was my personal opinion, that I was being arbitrary and subjective. How much more could I write to make the point that I DIDN’T think everybody should or would feel as I do? How much more should I have qualified my remarks?

I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with me. I’ll defend what I said, if I choose to, but it’s a pain when it involves something I didn’t say. That leaves me no choice but speak up.

I live in Nashville. Been here longer than the Oilers/Titans. Not a fan of the team, though. I have heard a lot of criticism of the logo and unis over the years, some deserved, some not so much. What I mean is…if you’re concerned about how Joe Schmeaux in Louisiana perceives the Titans’ tribute…why? What’s it to you? Joe Schmeaux gets to decide how he perceives it, and deals with it in his own way.

Ricko, I guess I’m on your side here.

I can’t see that we have exactly the same tribute for McNair as we would have for Roberto Clemente, and that’s regardless of how many times Clemente may or may not have had a “wife in every port”. Somewhere along the line, you have to have a hierarchy. Maybe the memorial/casket viewing at the stadium was enough. Maybe a moment of silence before the first game would have been enough. And maybe whatever patch, etc. that they’re going to wear won’t be enough either.

And with all that said, in the end (no pun intended) it’s all about selling tickets, isn’t it? If the Titans are over the line in their mourning, then the backlash should hit them.

link. Wasn’t even in the NFL. But he did a lot, so that’s okay. Apparently now it’s based on how much you did that makes it okay.

Since you feel that I am moving goalposts, KT, he was honoured while being retired. What of the other umpteen hundred players who played, retired, and then died? Where are their decals?

Why does McNair have to be special when his stats were nowhere near some of the greats who were never honoured with a season-long tribute? What did he do that made him better than the other several hundred players who played, retired, and died?

And if you want to hear how stupid the “Bolts” jersey is, I’d gladly open that debate up again.

    Okay, one last time…

I never said they shouldn’t do the sticker. Just suggested maybe they might not want to OVERDO it….considering what was learned about McNair through the circumstances in his death.

And I DON’T care who gets a sticker. I said I hoped the Titans wouldn’t appear to discount less-than-admirable behavior by a former player under the rug because of his past performance for your franchise.

I’ve been in journalism/PR/advertising for, um, 40 years now. I can’t help it, I think about what’s being communicated and about how the message might be received. It’s my instinct to be analytical about the process.

But, again, I never said they shouldn’t do the sticker. Never. Not once.

Or that McNair deserved what he got. To say I did is…nonsense.

    —Ricko

    Teebz,

Are you denying that a player can have influence and impact that goes beyond statistics? Forget his last days for a minute and look at this…

    (1) Although his stats weren’t Manning-esque, he did quite a lot of winning in Tennessee, making him a local favorite, I’m sure.

    (2) He played hurt… often. He is famous as a guy who won with heart while his body fell apart.

    (3) He mentored younger QB’s, most notably Vince Young. A very charismatic player who gave his time to teammates, fans, and media.

If the Titans want to remember him for what he did on the field and the positive effect he had while representing their franchise, I don’t have a problem with that. Is he HOF-worthy? Probably not, but not every local hero has to be in the HOF.

Hey all, I was just watching NFLN and I was wondering if anyone knew what the green dot on the back of the QB’s helmet is for?

Manning’s tribute was a personal one. Had the entire Colts team said we’re doing this FOR ONE GAME, I’m sure the NFL may have looked the other way. And Manning is only honouring one of the all-time greatest players to ever step on the gridiron. You don’t see Manning sharpie-ing a McNair tribute on his helmet, do you?

We’re talking about honouring a guy with a very visible decal for an entire season when he barely made a dent in Oilers/Titans history. Not a pair of shoes or shoelaces for one game.

This would be akin to the Yankees honouring Pat Collins for an entire season to commemorate his contributions in the 1927 season. It would make no sense.

Give McNair and his family (if they want to be there) one day – first home game, for example – where they honour his memory and his contributions to the team. He certainly deserves that, and I’m certainly in favour of that, especially if people can come and pay their respects to his family. But to extend it for an entire season is beating the drum far too long. Let the man rest in peace.

I’m sorry, but you’re selling McNair short. I don’t disagree that the tribute could be shorter than an entire season, but he had more than one season of impact on that franchise, and while he’s not a huge star in the overall Oilers/Titans picture, he’s practically the face of the Titans’ franchise when you isolate it from all the years in Houston. Moon was a better QB, but McNair was the face of a franchise in a leadership position.

I agree. I just find it insane that after the Sean Taylor outrage on this board last season that McNair’s decal isn’t being questioned at all.

Both were great players in their own rights, but season-long honourings are a little over the top in my view.

Pat Tillman would be the only exception I could make for the season-long honouring as he was actually defending his beliefs, freedom, and democracy – things we’re all thankful for.

or link for an entire season with an ARMBAND (not unlike a sticker) for his 2 months with the yankees?

granted, lidle was an active player, but im sure his contributions to the yankees weren’t as great as steve mcnair’s to the oilers/titans
That’s the key, though. He was an ACTIVE player. Part of the Yankee family.

I’m sure that if he was pitching for any other team, the Yankees would not have honoured him.
ok…fair enough, can i ask what your standards are then, if any, for a team seeking a memorial? would you agree with the three below?

    1. doesn’t have to be active at time of death (for example, sammy baugh, mickey mantle)

    2. doesn’t have to be very good or have played very long (for example, cory lidle)

    3. doesn’t need to hold any team records (same example cory lidle, likely sean taylor)

so, steve mcnair fits all three of those categories albeit not at the same time (and actually does have some team records), but he doesn’t deserve whatever tribute the titans feel justified in so giving, in your opinion

do i have that pretty correct? i don’t want to put words in your mouth

Maybe they’re so he doesn’t forget where he’s playing this year? I mean, with the TV show and all it may slip his mind now and then.

Although by about week six I’m pretty sure it will be getting pretty clear to him.

Come mid-November he’ll know it for sure (that’s a weather reference, not a dump on the Bills).

There is no reason at all for any season-long tributes outside of Tillman’s passing.

Tillman was defending every American citizen’s rights when he died. Therefore, it affected every single person in the USA, specifically those players who play for millions of dollars and those owners who make billions of dollars off the game. Tillman’s memory deserves that honour because he put his life on the line for everyone without being asked.

If a player dies mid-season while part of a team, I can see honouring his passing until the end of the season. That makes sense in that he was a part of that family aspect of the team.

Other than that? One day/night only. There’s no need to keep reminding everyone that a player died. If you want to honour him with more, put his name on your Ring of Fame/Hall of Fame and endorse his accomplishments that way for eternity.

And if he hasn’t passed on, it’s one day only WITH NO EXCEPTIONS. What he did was great, but the players on the field are trying to do better. It’s disrespectful to have them playing uder that shadow.

Don’t know if this has already been mentioned, but yesterday during the Yankees vs Red Sox game, the Yankee announcers had a small chat about uniforms. They discussed NOB, and Ken Singleton mentioned that at one point owners were reluctant to put NOB of jerseys because of program sales. They figured more fans would buy programs to match the number on the back to the name in the program.

Yeah, this is a one-off for the Jays. A pretty secret one apparently, considering I didn’t even know they’d be wearing the all-white retro duds and I’m a Jays fan. I think it’s also an introduction of the new 2010 Toronto Blue Jays uniform – i.e. they’ll follow the path of the SF 49er’s NY Islanders , etc and adopt a look that harkens back to their glory years.
Trying not to get my hopes up too much, but dang that would be nice!

    Ya know why?

Cuz none of you want to hang out with me in Ballmer.

Check this mention that Paul got over on Straightcashhomey:

let’s not get carried away here. what about charles in charge?!
Wrong. And wrong. The original Battlestar Galactica was the best show ever. Better uniforms than in the current imposter of the same name, by far.
I mean come on, this link beats this link anyday.
Did they just get purple chef jackets with a pocket and fancy them up? That’s what I see.
First thing I thought was, “Damn, they look like a marching band, not military officers.” And it kinda ruined the miniseries for me. But I gave the series a chance anyway.

And good God almighty am I glad I did.

holy shit, is that robin quivers?
Yeah, this is a one-off for the Jays. A pretty secret one apparently, considering I didn’t even know they’d be wearing the all-white retro duds and I’m a Jays fan. Complete with matching helmets, even some high-sock action courtesy of Joe Inglett. They’ve got the entire ’92 and ’93 teams in the crowd, they’re doing interviews throughout the game and there’s a bunch of stuff lined up all weekend, the series itself has been promoted heavily around Toronto but these unis are an added bonus.
They’ve been promoting the celebration of the 1992-1993 team pretty heavily but haven’t mentioned the throwbacks at all.

(I missed the entire thing sitting in airports and on airplanes, dammit!)

And like others have said, I wouldn’t mind one bit if they brought that uniform back as-is. I don’t think it needs a single update or tweak.

Also played the guy who pursued THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES, and then walked away.

    Name’s John Vernon, maybe?

Ricko, you are absolutely right with the actor’s name.

Shall we stay ” on topic” please? Gunsmoke – Charles Nelson Reilly – I thought this was UW??

    You!
You need to watch a color era episode of Gunsmoke tomorrow.
If you are still acting like a dick tomorrow, then I will know that you didn’t watch an episode of Gunsmoke on said day.
You will be glad that you did.
