The Larry Bodnovich Files, Vol. 2

Picture 3.png

Time for another visit with DVD screen-grab maestro Larry Bodnovich (who was first profiled last month). Here’s his latest batch of finds:

• Here’s a big album of Cleveland Browns shots. I especially like this facemask, the old goalpost design, and the Colts marching band.

• Excellent Patriots album here. Lots of view of the tri-corner hat logo.

This album has lots of grabs from the 1955 championship game between the Browns and Rams. Remember, the Rams had originally played in Cleveland, so this game probably had added resonance in that city.

• Speaking of the Cleveland Rams, here they are playing against the Redskins, circa 1944. Look at that scoreboard!

• Here are two sets of 1940s Steelers shots — one from a game against the Redskins and another against the Lions.

• More Steelers pics — not quite as old, including lots of “golden triangle” shots — here.

• Here are some shots from the 1941 Sugar Bowl, which featured BC vs. Tennessee.

• Some Iowa sorority girls were showing school spirit prior to a 1939 game against Minnesota.

• Larry even scours DVDs of CFL action. Here’s a bunch of Hamilton Tiger Cats shots. Look at those sleeves!

• And just to provide some non-football material, here are some galleries devoted to the Philly Warriors, Lakers, and Pirates.

Finally, as I was putting this entry together, I happened to get a note from Larry. It read, “My brother Dan also reads Uni Watch. He saw all the ‘I’m Calling It Shea’ and others comments, so he dug out this T-shirt he got a few years ago for the All-Star Game.” Holy moly, we’ve been scooped! Or at least that’s what I thought until I saw the rear view — pfeh.

As it happens, No Mas and I are now planning to do “I Still Call It”¦” shirts for Comiskey, the Jake, and Mile High. Our shirts won’t have the cool little “Survey Says” line like the one on Larry’s brother’s shirt, but they’ll have a few other things going for them (like no corporate crap on the back). More details to follow shortly.

And hey, speaking of that: We’ve been giving 10% of our T-shirt proceeds to a local food bank here in NYC, and we’d like to do the same for the Jake, Comiskey, and Mile High tees. If anyone can point us in the right direction for food banks in Clevo, Chicago, and Denver, please get in touch. Thanks.

Raffle Results: Baby needs a new pair of shoes — and baby will get them, if baby’s name is Kenneth Nee.

Mr. Bubble Bobble: In case you missed it yesterday, Robert Marshall’s bobblehead operation is now open for business. Scroll down to the middle of yesterday’s post for details.

Uni Watch News Ticker: OK, I’m sure Harry Kalas was a swell guy and all, but aren’t the Phils laying it on a bit thick? ”¦ More great news for the Wilpons. ”¦ Here’s Danica Patrick’s new car. ”¦ Larry Bodnovich found this old Arizona helmet design in the SI Vault. ”¦ The new Star Trek movie opens today, and people are already talking about the uniforms. (That panel comes from this comic strip.) ”¦ Jesus, how awful-looking is this? Dude looks like he’s a rag doll with a tourniquet on his leg. ”¦ Hahahahaha. ”¦ New uniforms for the Philadelphia Phantoms (with thanks to Matt Pesotski). ”¦ As you know, the spread of gay marriage means Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are being abolished after this year, so teams are gonna go all out this Sunday and wear solid pink uniforms as a last hurrah. ”¦ I have no idea why the new Brakes album is called Touchdown — there are no football references, and besides, the band is British. But by any name, it’s really, really good. ”¦ “One of my friends is currently a graduating senior at University of Tennessee,” writes Jing Xu. “For his final senior project, he created ‘NBA Europa,’ an eight-time European league with crests, shields, logos, jerseys, the whole package.” Good stuff. There’s even a video of the uni “unveilings” here. ”¦ Hmmm, was Mike Schmidt wearing a Ryne Sandberg jersey? Very odd (with thanks to Drew Wiesner). ”¦ Looks like the NFL isn’t the only football league that will be wearing 1960s throwbacks this season. ”¦ Interesting DIY project by Dave Murphy, who writes: “Instead of purchasing those overpriced Fatheads, I photocopied some logos and mascots onto transparencies. Then I used an overhead projector to enlarge and then stencil them onto the walls. Forty dollars’ worth of paint and about 10 hours’ worth of painting on each I was done. The mascots are at the head of my boys’ beds and the logos are in my basement/sportsroom.” ”¦ “I recently noticed that Julien Dupuy (a Frenchmen who plays for the English Leicester Tigers) wears a wedding ring while he is playing,” says Caleb Borchers. “It might just be tape, but it looks metallic from all the video and photos I have seen. Seems like a bad idea, particularly because Dupuy is a scrum half. Without going into too much minutiae, his job is to clear the ball out of a mass of bodies called a ruck, and thus is likely to get his hand stepped on. You’d think a wedding ring would be a poor choice for a guy who makes a living from sticking his hand into masses of cleats.” ”¦ Some good photos of the original Belmont Park, which was shut down in 1968, here (with thanks to Emily Gordon). ”¦ New 90th-anniversary logo for the Packers (with thanks to Ray Barrington). ”¦ This eBay seller has peddling jerseys from all three Mighty Ducks movies (with thanks to Jonathan Malone). ”¦ Orlando Hudson needs to button up (with thanks to Jon Bradford). ”¦ Throwback game in Anaheim last night, and Jared Weaver wore stirrups for the occasion. Mike Napoli, too. ”¦ Hey, it looks like Reebok is starting to Get Itâ„¢! (With thanks to Jeff LaHaie.) ”¦ Tigers on donkeys! Note that the second player from left has a different jersey (nice find by Bruce Menard). … Not uni-related, but there’s a fascinating article here about a high school basketball team that made really good use of a full-court press, and how that relates to underdog strategies, game theory, etc. Highly recommended.

I have no idea why the new Brakes album is called Touchdown – there are no football references, and besides, the band is British. But by any name, it’s really, really good

Paul, touchdown is also part of rugby vernacular…

    link

The Blue Jays should have worn their powder blues for the turn back the clock game in Anaheim.

The Brakes album is called “Touchdown” because it is like an alien reference. like a space craft “touching down.” British people and the whole crop circle stuff.
“The Blue Jays should have worn their powder blues for the turn back the clock game in Anaheim.”
Yeah, but the Angels as far as uniforms go, Got It(TM).

The Phantoms will be back in Leigh Valley in 2 seasons…after a new arena is built…it’s also to test the waters again that area of Upstate NY since the Red Wings yanked thier team out of their about 10 years ago….

Check out this ebay find, hockey wingers will appreciate:

The description is inaccurate though, the Chiefs started in 1988. They were probably used by a Jets’ player as the Jets were in existence from 1950-1977. (Possibly older, the Blue Birds played one season in the EHL in 1941-42).

Hasn’t Paul been all over teams that use belts when they originally wore the elastic waistbands? Looks like the Angels did it right. Awesome!

Actually, to do it properly, like a 1980s-era Angel would have, the stirrup would have to be a thin red line with lots and lots of white showing.

I think the old Belmont Park closed in 1963 or ’64 and the new one opened in ’68. While the old park was being removed and the new park built, they raced the Belmont Stakes at Aqueduct.

Those Angels uniforms were throwbacks? I thought thats what their uniforms looked like. Guess I’ve been out of the loop.

I think I can smell those gloves through the Internets…those are truly vintage mitts.

Cleveland pitcher Jeremy Sowers looked good in stirrups last night against the Red Sox (though this pic is not actually from that game…):

true…there was lots for me to bitch about, including what should have been thin stirrups, skintight unis and the use of non-tossback lids

still, a better effort than some, but it shows to go ya how awful the poly double-knits would look on today’s pajama wearing players

That NBA Europa project is fantastic. Kudos to the gentleman who produced that. I loved looking through the official style guides and everything. Love the London and Prague uniforms the best.

The Angels grounds crew even remembered to put the correct logo on the back of the mound. Nice work, guys.

I agree. The Jays should have packed the Friday throwback powder blues for this game.

And where was that pic of the striped Reebok socks taken!?!
OK, I’m sure Harry Kalas was a swell guy and all, but aren’t the Phils laying it on a bit thick?
Whats even worse is the caption on the picture in that article…

Phillies Hall of Fame announcer Harry Kalas throws out the traditional first pitch before the Phillies faced the Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park on April 8, 2009. Kalas died today before the Phillies’ game with the Nationals in Washington.

But did the Angels use their 1980’s name on the scoreboard, announcements, etc.? The “California Angels.”

Larry, those screen capture photos are amazing. Thank you for doing what you do. The Hamilton Tiger Cats photos brought back a lot of memories, since, as a kid our family used to make an annual trip up to Hamilton to visit family friends. I remember thinking back then that the Tiger Cats had some badass jerseys.

I don’t know why I thought of this but there are several teams like the Pistons, Capitals and Wizards who switched from blue and red to awful shades of mustard/gold and blue/teal (not great with color specifics, sorry) From what I can remember all of them eventually realized the terrible mistake they had made and switched back…expect the Wizards. I was just curious of any other teams that made terrible changes and then corrected them or (in the Wiz case) forgot to.

Ok, Larry’s inspired me to do some video captures for my site. Here is one I absolutely love of Bill Gregory(Seahawks) from a 1978 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Here’s the awesome shot of Bill:

    link

Here’s where the video picks up:
    link

Totally dig those vintage Seahawks sideline coats and jackets.

The odd thing about this video is that it’s been edited to mislead. It looks as though Bill Gregory and #58 Terry Beason are on the sidelines watching the goal line stance unfold, yet, they are actually in on the defensive play.

    Stick out…as meaning bad.

Seeing how cool the Steelers/Lions game from the ’40s looked, I think it may be time to bring back color on color in the NFL. No one owns black & white TVs anymore so what’s the problem?

Comment on the Mike Schmidt card. That photo was taken in spring training. He is wearing that uniform because someone stole his. (no definite source, just my memory from reading it in an issue of Baseball Cards magazine around the time this card came out.)

    No.
make players wear socks or stirrups like the NFL makes players wear socks?
probably because the MLB players union is much stronger than the NFLs. on a related note, my mom used to work for the browns (before assface moved them to baltimore) and i recall a uniform chart they had showing how the players are expected to look while on-field. penalties would be assessed if they were to deviate.

Penguins? Not so quite. They’ve been black and gold (non-original colors) for a while. The light blues went from a Winter Classic jersey to a very successful money grabbing alternate, but I don’t the Penguins will ditch the Stanley Cup-winning city colors. (Wait, what? Different gold? Damn, there goes that.)
Anyway, my obvious example is the Kansas City Royals. They tried some black-for-black’s-sake, but eventually felt the egg on their faces, and quietly dumped the black.
Buffalo Sabres, duh. (With a bit of darkening.)
Milwaukee Bucks returned to green jerseys after a purple stint.
San Francisco 49ers just went back to the Bill Walsh shade of red.
Vancouver Canucks finally returned to royal and green.
Edmonton Oilers are on their way to the original shades of orange and blue (ditto for the New York Islanders, unless they bolt for Kansas City, then all bets are off).

Hey, Chase, that is one great photo. Bill Veeck! I don’t know who you are or where you’re from, but within the space of 24 hours, you were able to: 1) Identify the mounted figure on the sleeve of the 1940 St Louis Browns; 2) Offer the astute observation that the second-best teams in old baseball towns (Browns and Braves) adopted the discarded colors of their crosstown counterparts (Cardinals and Red Sox); and 3) Provide that photo.

By the way, my bobblehead order breaks the monthly budget and will arouse the ire of my wife. Some things are worth the rack.

You’re right, but this case is a bit different because the Jays already have a throwback set (their Friday night powder blue set). They could have brought the blue set with them rather than having a new set of throwbacks made which is usually the case for the visiting team.

Yes, home teams do supply throwbacks, but visiting teams do get a percentage of the gate receipts. So the Jays would have a financial stake in the promotion. Surely a deal could have been worked out for them to bring the alts.

I say you get “Teebz” on the back.. or whatever you use as a handle when not poking the bears on this here website..
It was considered, but I’m no NHL star. This isn’t to downplay anyone who has their last name on the back of a jersey, but I just can’t do it. It feels wrong to me.

Besides, I was thinking of going for a tough guy to really make the one-glove-off part mean more. I would have killed for a goalie mold, though. I would have asked for a Salo bobble, but had link and into the net to represent his phenomenal work at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics against Belarus. :o)

Hey Teebz, been looking for you old friend: seriously, outside of the whole moving-out-of-Phoenix angle, what’s your opinion on getting Jerry Reinsdorf involved in the NHL?

I can say this much: if he got involved at all he’d want control; he’ll never be a limited partner or a silent partner. If he bought that team they’d stay there (the story goes that it was easier for him to move spring training for the Sox to Arizona than to try and talk his wife into them moving to Florida :-) and finally-the payroll for Phoenix wouldn’t necessarily be cheap, but they’d always be run with an eye on the bottom line at all times (and they’d never hire a superstar coach).

so just wondering cuz I can never keep up.. will it be DB of me to wear my authentic Eric Byrnes road jersey to the D-Backs game tomorrow? Since it’s a home game? I don’t want to wind up getting called out for it..
