Uni Watch Book Club: Cycling’s Golden Age

Picture 3.png

I know almost nothing about cycling, but I know a good jersey when I see one, and there are tons of them showcased in this 2006 book, Cycling’s Golden Age, which I discovered while birthday-shopping for a cycling-obsessed friend. Here are some highlights:

• I was aware that cycling jerseys used to be made of wool, but it’s still something of a shock to see these garments, which seem so tactile, so substantial, compared to today’s super-sleek jerseys.

• Today’s cycling jerseys have pockets on the back, but the jerseys of yesteryear had the pockets on the front chest area. The visual effect was often less than flattering.

This was the only brown jersey shown in the book. Nicely earthy, but it seems more like hiking gear than a cycling jersey, no?

• Some of the most impressive garments in the book are the champions’ jerseys, which are adorned with special stripes — sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical.

• It must be a drag to be from Switzerland, because you’re constantly being mistaken for a medic.

• Check out the beautiful chain-stitching here and here.

• I love back collar buttons, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one with a pointed back collar.

• Not sure what I like best here — the two-tone torso, the striping on the collar and sleeves, or the patch.

• Love the chest insignia here.

This dude‘s just training, not racing. But holy shit do I love his outfit.

• Last but definitely not least, the book also features a fair number of magnificent cycling posters, which I’ve gathered into this slideshow.

And so on. Great text, too, and the whole package feels well-conceived and lovingly designed. Highly recommended.

Memphis Update: Yesterday’s post about the Memphis/FedEx situation prompted a really thoughtful note from reader Caleb Borchers. It’s lengthy, but I think you’ll find it’s worth the time it takes to read it:

Let me say first, that I am with you on the issue of logo creep and public space. Before today, I’ve never disagreed when you have gone after teams or companies that clutter public entities with private capitalism. That said, I think some context would help with this Memphis situation.

I am not a [native] Memphian, but I have lived here for two years now, working on a Master’s degree. In my time in Memphis, I’ve learned a lot of things about the city. I’ve learned that the crime rate is horrific. I’ve seen the urban decay that is slowly crumbling society. I’ve also learned that the infant mortality rate is similar to that in many parts of the undeveloped world. Frankly, this city is in constant crisis mode. The result is a sort of shame or apathy about the city. People are not proud to live here, and many try to get out as quickly as possible. That lack of morale and the collapse of the city are reciprocal. The more people are ashamed of the city, the more they don’t help make it better, the more they are ashamed, the worse it gets, etc.

There are two bright points, two institutions that bring pride and dignity to the city. One is the Memphis Tigers. I’ve never lived somewhere that cares so much about college basketball. Watching them play in the Tournament is the one thing that makes Memphians proud to declare where they are from. The other institution is FedEx. This city needs FedEx as badly as Detroit needs the big three. And frankly, FedEx is more often than not a good company. They provide health benefits for part-time workers. Everyone starts at the same job and pay, and can work their way up the ladder in the company. Theoretically, even the CEO started with the company unloading packages at midnight. In a city that historically gave opportunity based on the color of your skin, that is a significant thing. Many people in Memphis eat, live, and provide for their families because of FedEx, and FedEx does not rape and pillage the community as some companies (cough, cough, Wal-Mart) are known to do. When someone criticizes the team or the company, in a real way they criticize the whole city. The connection is that tight.

All of this to say, when someone in the city had the idea to honor the company that keeps the city alive (“Memphis brought to you by FedEx” is not far from the truth), by doing something via the organization that brings this city the most pride, I think that calling them whores is not quite fair. I understand your ideological stance, and agree with it, but living here and seeing the context every day made it not sit well with me. The metaphor suggests that Memphis will do anything for money, and that FedEx is some pimp that abuses the city to make a profit. This is not the truth. I generally take every chance I can to take a shot at corporate America, but there are a few companies I respect for their genuine concern for the people that work for them, and FedEx is one of them.

Most of all, I hate to see a little more shame tossed on a city that already has plenty to go around. (Mitch Album had an excellent article on similar in issues in my home town of Detroit, “The Spirit of Detroit,” which I think describes a similar phenomenon there.) The jersey idea was poorly executed — I would have preferred something like a “Thank you FedEx, signed, Memphis” patch or something like that — but I don’t think the good people of this city deserve to be publicly shamed for a mistaken gesture of gratitude. A symbol of city pride and solidarity is now a reason to mock Memphis once again. The people here struggle enough day to day to keep their dignity without potshots from the media.

I really respect your work and what you do with the site. I don’t mean for this to sound as preachy as it may have come across. I just thought that a little context was important for the discussion.

That’s a really great piece of feedback. Thanks, man.

As I explained to Caleb when I wrote back to him, to me the question is not whether FedEx is a good company, or even whether they’re good for Memphis. My point is that the distinction between our civic institutions and our corporate entities should be akin to a church/state relationship. If you start honoring the company on things like basketball uniforms, you essentially start ceding your identity to theirs, which is a toxic road to go down, at least from my perspective.

Look, the relationship between a company and its home city is supposed to be a good one, it’s supposed to be a win-win. If the company goes above and beyond (and I don’t know enough about Memphis or FedEx to say whether that’s the case here, but let’s say it is), then give the CEO the key to the city or issue a mayoral proclamation or something. But once you start merging your civic identity with the company’s brand, you’ve taken the first step toward declaring your own civic subservience to the company, which is very, very bad news. If the company is secure in its own business model and is really a good corporate citizen, it shouldn’t have any problem with staying on its side of the civic/corporate line. And it shouldn’t need special recognition — like, say, FedEx Appreciation Night — as a reward for doing the right thing.

Steeltown Hoedown: I’m gonna be in Pittsburgh at the end of next week and would like to convene a Uni Watch party on either Friday the 27th or Saturday the 28th. Further details to follow in a few days, but you can definitely pencil it in for one of those two dates.

February Raffles, Round 3: I haven’t yet had a chance to see the new book Colors: Pro Football Uniforms of the Past and Present (my copy is in transit as we speak), but several people have told me that it’s very, very good. Now our friends at Helmet Hut, who consulted with author Jim Finks Jr. on the book’s content, have invited me to raffle off a copy to the Uni Watch readership.

To enter, send a blank e-mail with your name in the subject line to the raffle address (not to the usual Uni Watch e-mail address, please) by this Thursday, February 19th, at 10pm eastern. One entry per person, but anyone enrolled in the Uni Watch membership program at the time of the drawing can send four entries. I’ll announce the winner on Friday.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Anyone who loves striped socks as much as I do needs to know about this site. “They’re marketed as socks for the skateboard crowd, but they look like old-school striped basketball socks to me,” says Micah Roberts. “I’ve already picked up several pairs am currently pondering which ones to get next. My old solid-whites have been relegated to the drawer.” ”¦ Interesting story about the woman who designs the dresses for the ring-card girls at Madison Square Garden bouts here. ”¦ No mourning period for Omar Vizquel’s uni number (with thanks to Dan Cichalski). ”¦ Several readers have expressed surprise over this 1962 photo, which shows Duke wearing red trim. ”¦ Lebron James is considering a uni number change (with thanks to Brendon Yarian). ”¦ Buried deep in that same article, there’s this: “If James would switch [uni numbers], though, there’s a good chance it would happen in 2010. The NBA is likely to alter its uniforms in two years to make their construction more consistent for every team, making them easier to make and reproduce for fans who order them. That is already the case with warmups and practice attire now.” I’ve asked the NBA for more info on that and got this response: “Not for any of the reasons mentioned below, we are working with Adidas to combine their technologies with our uniforms for a more complete system. We have been researching for several years and continue to do so with no set timetable.” That’s some first-rate double-speak right there. ”¦ One good thing about economic downturn: Naming-rights deals are floundering. ”¦ Two great finds on Rob Walker‘s excellent Murketing blog. First, check out these great Mexican thumb-wrestling masks. And on a more esoteric note, a photographer named Ofer Wolberger has come up with something really wonderful called the Maggie Project, which involves having a female model pose in various situations while wearing a somewhat disturbing mask — a uniform of sorts. It’s a brilliant project, because most of the photos are really gorgeous, but the mask recontextualizes them. View the full project here. ”¦ Alexander Julian, the man who ruined uniforms for a decade by starting the purple/teal trend, is the subject of a new exhibit at the Chapel Hill Museum. I suggest we all start picketing tomorrow (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Interesting to see Albert Pujols posing with Rick Ankiel’s bat (good spot by Aaron Steele). ”¦ How much do I love stripes? So much that on Sunday I picked up a vintage white sweater — something I’d never consider wearing under normal circumstances — just because it has these groovy stripes on the sleeves and shoulders. ”¦ More basketball players with long sleeves. That’s Fairfax High in L.A. (with thanks to Erkki Corpuz). ”¦ New 50th-anniversary logo for Navy’s stadium. Details here (with thanks to Kevin Whisman). ”¦ Yesterday I asked why the Harlem Globetrotters are wearing a memorial patch. My thanks to everyone who provided the answer. ”¦ In another follow-up item, yesterday I asked about Cristobal Huet’s thick black sleeve stripes. Josh Becvar couldn’t answer that one, but he did point out that the Huet’s mask in that photo is a new design. Here’s the old one. ”¦ Several spring training observations from Brendon Yarian: First, Anthony Reyes usually goes flat-brimmed but he’s either moving away from that or else it’s just impossible to go flat-brimmed with those BP caps (anyone know?). Also, if you look again at that last photo, you’ll see that Victor Martinez appears to be wearing earplugs or earphones. Also-also, Kelly Shoppach has changed from Wilson gear to Reebok (again with the wordmark!). ”¦ Mark McGinnis reports that the DC United had a press conference yesterday to announce that they’ll be working with Maryland’s Prince George’s County to build a stadium. The press conference featured what may be the first instance of CoNOB — county name on back. ”¦ Awesome Keds sneakers display materials available here. ”¦ And a totally awesome 1936 Keds catalog here. ”¦ Here’s something I hadn’t seen before: an old basketball backboard catalog. … Rocco Baldelli is still wearing his blue/gold Rays batting gloves. ”¦ I love hats and tend to get attached to them,” writes Andy Chalifour. “I never want throw them away once they’re no longer wearable, but something has to be done. So I recently had the idea to turn into refrigerator magnets. The first step is to cut the logo out of the hat. Next, find the magnets. I am sure you can buy them at a craft store but I had some lying around from and old note pad that used to be on the fridge but tore off. The key is to make sure the magnet is strong enough to hold the weight (thin ones usually aren’t strong enough). Then the last step is to hot-glue them to back of the patches. In five minutes they’re ready to put on the fridge. … Here’s a major find: a vintage RCA Victor basball uni, complete with super-cool sleeve patch. ”¦ Best douchebaggery story ever. ”¦ Purdue will finally wear those long-rumored new uniforms tonight. Photo gallery here and further info here. Am I the only one who thinks it’s stupid to unveil a new design at this point in the season? ”¦ This is pretty great: video coverage of the Nats holding racing presidents tryouts (thanks, Phil). ”¦ Also from Phil: A Seattle cycling team gives the sponsorship space on its uniforms to local nonprofits, and Tim Duncan liked those high-tech all-star uniforms. ”¦ “Uniform numbers in rugby correspond to specific positions (e.g., No. 1 is a prop, No. 9 is the halfback, etc.), so NOBs aren’t usually needed,” writes Hadyn Green. “In fact, I had never ever seen NOBs in rugby until this past weekend, when the Chiefs (based in Hamilton, New Zealand) played their opening match away in whites with NOBs. Interestingly, it seems only the starting 15 players got NOBs — the reserves just had numbers.” … In a related item, with more spring training games being televised, the Indians have added NOBs to their BP jerseys (with thanks to Tim Bennett).

Is it just me or do those Indian practice jersey NOBs look huge?

Will the Indians be bringing their ’40s throwbacks out again this year? Those look great, and can get me to totally forget about ugly names on their practice shirts.

That design is still part of their uni package, yes.

Paul…………….Aj Abrams on Texas was wearing a two colored arm sleeve vs Texas A&M last night………it was really cool. no pictures tho.

The first thing that should be done on those hat-turned-into-magnets: Wash those skanky looking things.

here ya go (don’t know if that’s from last night, but that’s the sleeve)

Regarding the MLB Batting Practice caps, it’s impossible to go flat brimmed, they all come with pre-curved bills, like the Twins Enterprises fashion caps.

When seeing this picture: link I just assumed the last couple letters were cut off. It seems highly unlikely that such language would be flouted on somebody\’s chest back then.

Either that, or this guy is one of the original \”bikers\” and is just too badass to care. link

I also see the Pirates ditched the red from the BP hats, I had not noticed that. The hat looks more like the new alternate…

i like the bottle cap magnet. i make those from my favorite beers (bass ale) pretty much the same way. just buy a little round magnet and glue it to the back. works perfect!

As for this being a strange time to unveil new uniforms, often NCAA teams will break out new uniforms before their conference or NCAA tournament begins. Purdue is just a little off, as usual.
Also most NIKE schools will wear a new style of shoe when the tourney begins.

Went to the MLB shop website and the price for an “authentic on field cap” has gone up 2 bucks. Used to be $31.99, now $33.99. Thanks MLB jerkoffs.

Plenty of places in the SouthSide will fit the bill.

It’s no longer decaying, and I don’t know if it’s big enough. But Kelly’s in East Liberty is tough to beat for atmosphere and neon signage.

Victor Martinez looks like he could be wearing Oakley Thumps with the build in MP3 player like Manny wore a few years back.

    Re: 39/30 BP Caps

They are just made curved….it IS impossible to have them flat…largely due to the material used to stretch….and to be honest…when I worked at a hat store and they first came out…you could put on ten of the “same” size on, and they felt 10 different ways…

I love the ‘burgh, and I spent a great chunk of my life there, but finding a decaying dump there will NOT be a problem.

I’ve sent Paul a few ideas, but I’m not really the best person to suggest nightlife spots.

is max’s the old german place on the northside??? if so, paul would LOVE that place!

Before Paul looks at Jack’s and based on the pictures says it’s the place for him, I must argue against it.

Jack’s is so totally cliched at this point it’s almost sad. It will be packed full of college kids by 9:00 on a Friday and Saturday night. Once upon a time it was a bar for millworkers, now it’s a bar for people who like to drink at 10:00 am and college kids. I’m just saying.

That does suck, but there is a solution: Do not buy a new cap. It’s the ol’ capitalism thing. If the price reaches a point where not enough people are buying the caps, the MLB jerkoffs (and they are jerkoffs) will reduce the price.

The problem is that the masses of baseball fans just keep buying this stuff, no matter the price.

    Yeah, those were the days…

So is anyone else alarmed by reading that Lebron story about watching NBA players in what will look like WNBA uniforms with this “combined technology” BS? I’m not gonna lie, this actually scared the hell out of me.

I agree with Jesse regarding Jack’s, it just came to mind when I read the words dive and neon. I like this place:

They’ve had NOBs ever since they went to that new number font (which I love, except for the link) three or four years ago.

The Orioles NOBs are new this year; the last few years, they didn’t have them, and the black numbers were surrounded by an orange layer link. (Then again, link.) I say that if you’re going to put the number that far down the player’s back and leave a big blank space up there, you might as well put the NOB on.

Speaking of spring training uniforms, is it just my imagination, or are fewer teams putting numbers on the fronts of the jerseys now that they’ve got this new material and this league-wide template? The Mets’ jersey looks weird without a number on the front.

I like how Caleb takes the time to point out the unfairness of ignorantly taking shots at FedEx, but ignorantly takes a shot at Wal-Mart in the process. Come visit the West Side of Chicago, where one alderman courageously stood up to the unions and managed to get a Wal-Mart built in her economically-depressed ward. The West Side residents who have witnessed unprecedented commercial development following the Wal-Mart’s opening could just as easily take you to task for your “rape and pillage” comment.

From what I remember, when it was introduced, the current logo is the one that tested best with children.

A more “jolly roger” skull and cross bones logo (one of their alternates on the Chris Creamer boards) was seen as too morbid for a primary logo.

lists #72 as Gary Hrivnak. He is a graduate of my high school, Greater Johnstown (PA). The research I’ve done, states that his time in the NFL was as a DE, yet he’s on this photo, apparently blocking for Sweetness.

Was he really an O-lineman or was this a case where possibly a D-lineman was brought in for a goal line/short yardage situation?

Sorry if this has been reported already, but it looks like the Giants have new BP hats/jerseys this year. I like the orange bill better than the black on black they used the past few years.

Not crazy about the gold trim though. It doesn’t seem necessary. Thoughts Paul?

Regarding rugby NOBs, the English Premiership has been using NOBs for the past couple of years see examples

    link

    link

The reason that 1-15 have names but the rest don’t is pretty simple, most teams only have one or two players who play each position, so at the start of the year they make up a position number shirt for each player, but the replacements could be any of the players in the squad, and so they would need 20 to 30 shirts with each of the numbers on them.

Fathead’s is another option for the Steeltown Hoedown:

People, people – haven’t you learned by now what I like? Old-school neighborhood dives with cool neon signs. So if there’s some decaying dump that you’ve always looked too scary and/or dilapidated to bother checking out, that’s the place.

This is the best I can do…

is max’s the old german place on the northside??? if so, paul would LOVE that place!

Yes, it is. And I very much think he would like it.

First off, I’m excited to see all the chatter about a steeltown party, I’ve been waiting years for it! Second of all…You guys sure Paul wouldn’t like any of these options?

It’s a shame link is attached to Barroom or it would be perfect! I’ve been in there many-a-times and the pictures inside are amazing!

On a serious note, what about:

    link

I know it seems a little upscale and it isn’t what Paul is used to with the flashy neon signs and all but it is right next to link and it likely won’t be as packed as the SouthSide. If this isn’t a good idea, I agree that we should find something on the north shore because it will likely be less crowded, unless we do a saturday afternoon!

PS – those GPS shirts are coming for those who want them, I’ve been so busy with school I haven’t had a day to sit down and mail them all out!

No, no, no. The PERFECT place for the party next weekend is a place called Schmidt’s Tavern. Hole-in-the-wall joint owned by a woman who’s husband just passed away. Three beers on tap: IC Light, Augustiner, and Strohs ($1.50 23-ounce drafts). Old ‘burgh memorabilia all over the walls- Mazeroski autographed pics, ‘71 Pirates World Series banners, 1970s Steeler-commemorative Iron city cans and cheap food.

The downside is it’s way out by Robinson (but near my house):

    Two things

    1. Eddy Merckx used to rock the link so it’s gotta be cool. The Cannibal makes everything he touches cool.

    2. Is the Original Hot Dog Shop still a complete dive with great food? I haven’t been in Pittsburgh in a few decades, but that was the place I remember most. And it’s in walking distance to where Forbes Field used to be.

I can attest to Caleb’s account of Memphis. I lived there until I was 9 and have been back frequently to visit family. Every year, it gets worse inside the city – just driving by all the crumbling, abandoned buildings that were once thriving businesses is staggering. There really are some parts that are so bad you would swear you were in a third world country. In contrast, like so many other places where the “white flight” of the 70’s and 80’s occurred dramatically, the suburbs are affluent and thriving.

That said, the whole city rallies around the Tigers like no place you’ll ever see. College basketball has always been number 1 in Memphis, and it’s about the only thing that unifies the whole city – urban and suburban. That’s why it was so excruciating when Chalmers hit that fucking shot. What would have been the city’s greatest triumph ended up being a crushing defeat.

At least they got rid of those awful uniforms, though.

I’d suggest Dee’s over Jack’s. I think Dee’s has the better signage and has much more room. Jack’s is always crowded.

However, if you are looking for a drink at 7am, Jack’s is the place to go. It’s open from 7am-2am 365 days a year.

    Yeah, pretty much…

Regarding Memphis, did anyone catch King of the Hill Sunday?

Mr. Strickland asks his son “what’s the bad part of memphis called?” and the son says…

    “Memphis”

    Perhaps some can answer this:

Why is that cyclists have no training gear that is generic? Whenever I see cyclists riding throughout Philly — of the racing variety of course — they are always geared up to the max. Is this prolific personal preference or is there no unbranded or “un-teamed” gear to be had?

ok. cutting logo from hat before throwing out. do not clean or wash or disinfect. now, let’s see. where’s a good place to display ’em? kitchen, near food, on fridge door. i’m guessing like um you’re real real single.

Is it just me, or do all these newfangled basketball uniforms look terrible? The lack of trim around the arm holes makes them look unfinished.

Also, memo to Purdue player: wearing a t-shirt under your jersey makes you look like a high-schooler. Time to wear your uni like a man.

Not sure if this has been posted yet (because I don’t have time to go and look through), but there’s a little bit about the kid who created the rookies/sophomores jerseys here:

wow… i can’t believe how accurate the stadiums (and skylines) are though!

I can appreciate where Caleb Borchers is coming from. I read the Mitch Albom piece last month and was empathetic. It’s amazing how many people feel so inferior about their hometown and find refuge in their sports teams. I guess that’s why sports are a convenient safety valve.

That said, I agree with you 100 percent regarding the church-state nature of sports and corporate sponsorships. I fear that we’re not that far from turning uniforms into NASCAR and European soccer garb. When that happens, it truly will be sad and we’ll be poorer people for it.

I never understood how corporations could make the numbers work on these stadium naming rights. Do I buy U.S. Cellular phones just because the White Sox play at Comisky, or do I get pissed off because it’s not formally called Comisky any longer.

We keep heading down this road and everyone will be wearing brown shirts, and I’m not referring to UPS.

    End of gloomy rant.

Funny you should bring this up. As an avid rider, I have always deplored the “high end” super expensive stuff you see these guys wearing(I mean, it’s Kelly Drive for God’s sake). – if it’s good, show a picture and write, “It’s f#@king awesome! Go read it!”

    From yesterday:

but how in hell can one say that corporate influence is “right” or “wrong.” this is not a moral issue. its a matter of fact.

Lots of things were “matters of fact”, some of which were indeed moral issues. Until they changed, segregation and second-hand smoke seemed like they’d be with us forever. A bit less importantly, major league uniforms without visible manufacturers’ logos used to be a fact the same way uniforms without advertisements are now.

there is corporate influence on both professional and college sports, and it is what drives the public interest in them.

You have it exactly backwards. Because people enjoy watching sports, advertisers want to associate themselves with it. In fact, many attempts by corporate interests to start their own sporting endeavors have failed; the XFL leaps to mind.

Um. Sports. Stu Voight was on The Sports Show and said that the Vikings basketball team used to play 70-80 games a year in the offseason. Apparently Matt Blair is still running games with former players, but that current players can no longer play due to restrictions in their contracts.

Oh and I used to have one of link. You may all point and laugh.
I ate at Vincent’s last week. Still there, still greasy, still PHENOMENAL.
ummm… not to brag but my fingers may still be greasy from the vinny’s i just ate 30mins ago! hee hee

tomorrow is my birthday and one of the only things i wanted was a red shirt from vincent’s (on ardmore, of course). so he picked up a small pie while there… THE BEST!

I knew instantly this was gonna be a fellow Sox fan. I once posted some NSFW link of one of my hats….I’ll have to think about this magnet idea.

And to the “wash that thing” people: cleanliness doesn’t win championships.
i guess that’s why the pirates suck so bad because i’ll throw my hat in the laundry about 2-3 times a year. makes it more floppy too!

that brings up a question… does anybody else cut out the white plastic part of the inside front of their baseball hats to make them low-profile??? know what i mean? i do! works like a charm!

Tonight in Raleigh the Hurricanes are retiring Glen Wesley’s #2. I am pretty sure he is the last active link from Hartford to Carolina.

During warmups, all players had a small “Wesley 2” stitched just to the left of the collar, in the same font as the numbers and letters on the back. Those will probably be worn during the game, because the players are still wearing them as Wesley is giving a speech, and everything else is ready for opening faceoff.

It is only a matter of time till we see a coporate sponsor on the sleeves of an MLB or NFL team, regular season, full-time.

    Tick, tick, tick.

A matter of a VERY LONG time, as long as I have anything to do with it (which, happily, I do).

    Insert Edmund Burke quote here:

    Hey Teebz,
Here’s that Al Smith mask I was looking for awhile ago. We were dicussing the baseball jersey with multiple team logo’s. This is the actual mask not 1 of the white knock-offs.

Why is that cyclists have no training gear that is generic? Whenever I see cyclists riding throughout Philly — of the racing variety of course — they are always geared up to the max. Is this prolific personal preference or is there no unbranded or “un-teamed” gear to be had?
Why have generic gear when you can wear free stuff supporting your sponsor? Unless of course you are an amateur and you just want to look like a pro…
Oh—we are talking FAR FAR from pro here. Think 50 and over class. Man, that lycra STRETCHES.

That is a point though. If I could get branded stuff free, I would. I don’t think the quality is really that different on generic bike stuff(clothes)–there are only a few manufacturers.
I sincerely appreciate the time and hilarious/salient insight delivered on my question. I am with you on the lycra stretchage as packs careen down Kelly. Too funny.

I just got back from a documentary class where we watched “Ashes to Glory,” a documentary about the Marshall football team plane crash and subsequent rebuilding of the team (I go to Marshall, so it’s a big subject here), and in it they said the the year after the crash, ’71, they played with basically all freshman and sophomores, so they had their name officially changed from the Thundering Herd to the Young Thundering Herd. Pretty cool that they’d think of it, and actually got permission to do it.

    P.S.
If you’re going to Pittsburgh, you might as well drive an hour and a half northeast to Loretto and go the the LPG. Only bar in the town and best dive bar I’ve ever been to.

Here’s an idea, we burn down New Era and while we are at it, head to Canton and burn down Reebok with all their “designs” inside.

Its the exact same treatment they gave Ron Francis in the 2005-2006 season. All wore his jersey pre-game, then switched to their normal jerseys but with a chest patch reading ‘WESLEY’ with his number below it, and beneath the alternate logo on the left sleeve, they put a simple patch with the outline of the Hurricanes main logo with Wesley’s #2 in the middle.

I’d expect Rod Brind’Amour to be getting the same treatment the year after he retires, and then it’ll be a while before another one gets retired. Only ones on the roster right now who could would be Staal and possibly Cam Ward, but thats a long time away.

There are photo galleries of both the pre-game ceremony as well as the game itself (5-1 Bruins win) at hurricanes.nhl.com

After looking at the photos, that might be the most overdone retirement patching I have ever seen. Is there a need for two tributes on the same jersey?

He’s one man. There’s no need for two patches for the same guy. Hell, Gretzky didn’t even get two patches, and we’re talking about Glen Wesley!

I thought I read somewhere (and I would have guessed it was here) that Chicago’s goalies always have thicker black stripes on their jerseys. I can only assume it’s to let the stitcher know that it’s a goalie’s jersey? No clue.

    From UNI WATCH
    Feb 28th 2008:

I think Tom O’Grady mentioned this a few weeks ago, but it bears repeating: The Blackhawks’ red and black sleeve stripes are supposed to be of equal thickness, but the team’s goalies have thicker black stripes – weird (with thanks to J D Vercett for the latest round of pics).

I can’t find anything on any other site.

What is that bottom word anyway?
Nivea-Fuchs
“Fuchs” is German for “fox” and is a very common surname. It’s not that guy’s fault that the cameraman was at just the wrong angle, and that the photo was seen by English-speaking people unaware of the sponsor.
