Monday Morning Uni Watch

kremlin2.jpg

The NHL isn’t the only league that can stage an outdoor hockey game. This past Saturday, the Kontinental Hockey League, which is primarily Russian (further details here) staged its all-star game in Moscow — smack in the middle of Red Square.

Lots of interesting visual details here. In no particular order:

• Wrigley Field makes a nice backdrop to a hockey game, but it’s hard to compete with the Kremlin. Like, really hard.

• The KHL’s all-star uniforms are certainly no worse than what we’ve seen in recent years from the NHL — no extraneous nonsense. From the side, in fact, they’re almost too plain.

• Those Russkies sure have a funny alphabet. (Of course, one word was rendered in perfect English — you can see it just under the collar.)

• Game-time temperature was about 10 ºF, and it dropped several more degrees during the game, so there was a lot of this. (That’s Jaromir Jagr, incidentally — I guess he’s not tucking in his jersey anymore.)

• The frigid conditions probably explain why there were so many empty seats. But even if they’d been at full capacity, the bleachers set up for the game could only accommodate 3000 people. As a result, the atmosphere apparently didn’t live up to the backdrop, at least according to several accounts that I read.

You can supposedly watch the entire game here, although that link hasn’t worked so well for me. As a backup, there are plenty of shorter clips available on YouTube.

Party Update: The venue for this winter’s Uni Watch gathering (which, as previously announced, will take place on Saturday the 24th, 2pm) will be Sheep Station — same place as last winter. Looking forward to meeting lots of you there.

Raffle Reminder: I’m currently raffling of a free jersey from SoccerPro.com. Details here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Best candy name ever. That page comes from this 1949 candy catalog, which in turn is part of this collection of retro graphics — all very good stuff. ”¦ Wayne Chism of Tennessee wore some rad socks against Gonzaga last Wednesday night. “I didn’t see the game, but my dad, knowing my Uni Watch obsession, brought it to my attention,” says Jason Werth. “Not sure if he’s worn them before. Also, according to dad, the announcer made some comment about someone having to be secure or confident in order to wear socks like that.” ”¦ Hall of Fame curator Tom Shieber was looking at this photo of Jim Rice and became intrigued by his necklace pendant. Looks like the letters might say “RICE,” but what about the rest of the pendant? Anyone recognize this design? ”¦ Several readers noted that Tim Tebow’s NOB was badly off-center on Thursday night. ”¦ “Soccer player Lassana Diarra has been signed by Real Madrid to replaced the injured Mahamadou Diarra in midfield,” writes Chris Cruz. Rather than doing a FNOB or “L. Diarra” treatment, they have given him a jersey with his nickname.” Further details here. ”¦ Here are some shots of the last guy to wear No. 5 for the Red Sox, and here’s Rocco Baldelli with his new jersey. The navy border around the red numeral looks a lot thicker than usual, no? ”¦ The sixth graf of this story assigns blame for the whole pink-for-breast cancer thing (with thanks to Brandon Yarian). ”¦ Really interesting tidbit from Nick Hanson, who writes: “At last week’s International Power Showcase High School Home Run Derby, the hitters wore their home state’s two-letter abbreviation instead of a uniform number. For example, this is Bryce Harper, a sophomore from Las Vegas High School in Nevada.” ”¦ Greg Netherwood notes that Clark MacArthur of the Sabres has an interesting NOB. ”¦ Gorgeous views of the Cubs’ raised helmet logos with the old-style inscribed uni numbers here and here (with thanks to Jere Smith). ”¦ Turns out Oregon had diamondplate-patterned gloves for their bowl game (good catch by Matt Calvert). ”¦ “Before Hideo Nomo retired last year, he created an amateur club team in Osaka,” writes Jeremy Brahm. “I saw photos of the team’s uniforms the other day and thought the white one was one of the strangest baseball designs I’d ever seen.” ”¦ Also from Jeremy: “For the Italian Volleyball League Series A All-Star game in November, the floor was painted like an Italian flag.” ”¦ Chris Flinn says he got an e-mail from the Giants the other day that included this attachment. Gonna take a lot more than spam to sell Plaxico jerseys at this point. ”¦ “Here’s a video clip shot at Shea Stadium in 1984, from a bad movie called 7 minutes in Heaven,” writes Paul Wiederecht. “It’s got faked-up Expos uniforms, huge NOBs, and a game taking place at Shea in the morning.” ”¦ Denny Jones notes that injured Titans center Kevin Mawae wanted to listen in on the play call as he watched his team on offense near the of their game against the Ravens on Saturday, so he picked up one of the radio-equipped helmets and eavesdropped. ”¦ Collateral Gammage and I checked out this exhibit of vintage matchbooks on Saturday, and there were lots of sports-related pieces in the show, including die-cut team-logo matchbooks, an old football player series, a Brooklyn Dodgers series, and one for Joe Namath’s Restaurant. Sorry about the image quality, but I only had my camera-phone, and the combination of the glass exhibit case the plastic display sleeves made for a lot of glare. ”¦ Korea’s WBC uniforms have been unveiled (with thanks to Dan Kurtz). ”¦ According to this story, there’s a disproportionately high rate of ADD among MLB players. ”¦ Color-on-color games from Saturday: Oklahoma State vs. Texas A&M and Georgia Southern vs. College of Charleston (with thanks to Matt Watson and Benji Boyter, respectively). ”¦ Some of you probably knew this already, but the Canadiens’ web site has a great history section, which includes an excellent sweater timeline (big thanks to Mike Kemezis). ”¦ Doug Blanchard has created uni illustrations for all the teams in Slap Shot and Rollerball. Regarding the latter set, Doug says: “Clear shots of the Paris and Rome unis are available only in the ‘making of’ feature ”” James Caan’s Houston team does not play them in the movie although they are shown briefly in video sequences depicting moments in his career. Pittsburgh is mentioned in another video sequence, but they are not shown (it is Rome’s purple unis that are briefly seen).” ”¦ Longtime reader Doug Keklak very generously sent me a copy of this excellent book about signs in and around Pittsburgh. The book is based on this web site. Great, great stuff — highly recommended. ”¦ Great old shot of the Polo Grounds in this shot of Sammy Baugh coaching the Titans. … Several readers have noted that Donovan McNabb has a black Dymo Tape label just above his fine-print warning decal. It appears to say, “PRIMARY OFF #1 MCNABB,” which I assume means that this is McNabb’s preferred radio-equipped helmet (screen grabs courtesy of John Zajac). ”¦ McNabb also had a play yesterday where his chinsnap broke just before the snap. He played that down strap-less and then ran over to the bench for a new chinstrap. ”¦ Peter Greenberg tipped me wise to the work of Kevin McNeil, an artist who does really nice charcoal and pastel illustrations. Check out more of his work here. ”¦ Two uni number-related items at the very end of Ken Davidoff’s Sunday column. ”¦ On Friday I linked to pics of the NFC’s Pro Bowl design. Here’s the AFC version. Fortunately, nobody actually watches the Pro Bowl, so these awful designs will go largely unseen. ”¦ Tris Wykes reports that Wyclef Jean was shown wearing Magic and Habs jerseys on last night’s 60 Minutes. ”¦ Here’s a double-flapper I hadn’t been aware of: Junior Felix. But he was a switch-hitter, so it’s not as unusual as a non-switch going double-flapped (with thanks to Dustin Pomprowitz). ”¦ Cool old catalogs available here, here (note the sliced baseball diagram), here (gorgeous cover), here, and here. ”¦ Early contender for stupidest illustration of the year. ”¦ Instead of color on color, how about white on white? That’s the Buffalo Bandits vs. Toronto Rock, of the National Lacrose League. Additional pics here (with thanks to Chris Coulson). ”¦ Interesting back design for Denmark’s women’s volleyball team (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Major find by Michael Romero, who’s come up with an addition to our list of MLB players with faceguards attached to their helmets: Tony Fernandez, from the 1989 ALCS. ”¦ Lots of good NOB finds by Doug Keklak: Mike Santorelli (there are no other Santorellis on the Predators’ roster, so what’s up with that?), Jess Williams, and Maurice and Mike Pouncey. ”¦ Also from Doug: “Last week, someone in the comments was wondering about a poster that was in the office on the old show Coach. I was able to get a couple of grabs.” ”¦ Hadn’t noticed this before: The NHL All-Star jerseys apparently feature numbers on the sleeves. “I did some research,” writes Mike Kemezis, “and while the Canadiens have hosted 11 previous all-star games, they’ve hosted only three such games since the change in format (it used to be the Stanley Cup winner vs. an all-star team). Those years were 1969, 1975, and 1993, which are the years listed on the sleeves.”

It is the Kremlin on the right in the first picture… next to St. Basil’s. BUT… the second picture is just St. Basil’s Cathedral and not the Kremlin. So… you were kinda right… and above all, we get your point. :)

When you said a matchbook from Namath’s restaurant, thought maybe was gonna be from Bachelor’s Three, the bar he owned, the scene of his “retirement” news conference.

Both Mike and Mark Santorelli are in the Predators’ system. Mike and Mark have been playing for Nashville’s AHL affiliate in Milwaukee, but the recent injury bug has resulted in both players being called up.

Mark started the season in the ECHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones, and is still listed on their roster.

Lots more KHL All-Star Game info linked to my name. I watched the game via broadband, and it looked damned cold for an outdoor game.

Why doesnt the NFL just have the teams where there actual Home or Road jerseys? Makes sense…its still dark vs white!

Whoa, Jagr wearing the eggshell thin (and IIRC, banned in the NHL) old-school JOFA helmet. Has he been wearing it all season or was it just for the all-star game?

I can’t seem to find a picture of it righ now, but the all-time worst color-on-color game was Wisconsin playing at Illinois somewhere around the 2003-2004 seasons. The Badgers wore their standard red on the road, while the Illini wore their orange alternate. You couldn’t tell the teams apart on the television. Maybe someone will have some luck finding a photo from this game. I’m still searching…

Speaking of Outdoor Hockey games, the Rochester Americans of the AHL seem to be interested in link.

Whether hosted at link where the Rochester Rhinos play, or link where the AAA Rochester Red Wings play, how can some place in Russia compete with the backdrop of the Kodak headquarters?!

If the NFL played it’s Pro Bowl as a flag football match would they get fewer viewers? It’s not real football anyway and I can understand why players whose bodies take such a beating wouldn’t really want to engage in another round of violent combat. I always assumed fans just tune in because there isn’t anything else on the tube and a flag football game could be just as fun to watch.

Doesn’t actually look like there are any Santonellis on the Preds…the photo shows Mi. Santorelli.

Did anyone else notice that Edgerrin James of the Cardinals played a few series without his super-dark tinted visor on Saturday night? I think the brief period of rain during the game forced him to play without it.

You will be there in spirit, Ricko. Last year’s meeting was fun.

What was even more fun was the adventure that Phil and I took to geth there. I think we rode on every line of the New York Subway system…twice.

This year, I might actually use my image capturing device!

And here’s Edge at the start of the game, playing with the visor. They took it off late in the first quarter or in the 2nd quarter.

Forgive me for both a late comment, and if this has been brought up already, but life got in the way of things and I was late in reading the ESPN article on the Mets sleeve batch. Yeah it is really bad, but I think that this sleeve patch is a tell that Citigroup is going to be no more. There is no way a company would put so much cash into naming a field, and then not insist on being on the sleeve patch that comemorates it. For example, look at the Pudential Center first season patch, Paul rightfully bashed it for having like five “Prudentials” on it. I think this means there is a real chance that Citigroup is a goner, and the Mets either know it, or know that it is a real possibility that they’ve hedged with the lack of a ballpark name on the sleeve patch.

Again, apologies if this has been said already.

Neil Rackers was also wearing some ridiculously baggy pants on Saturday night. Is he trying to bring the pajama look to football?

Well that game was played on a sandy beach, which contributed to the severity of the injury. I think a game on regular grass might be okay.

Love the Rollerball unis. They look great in action, too, even though the entire sport was color-on-color. There should be a whole site for fictional leagues.. I watched the Raquel Welch vehicle Kansas City Bomber the other day, & while the movie seems to assume the existence of a far-flung roller derby league, you only actually see three teams max. Disappointing.

They’re not allowed to put the Citi corporate brand on the patch. MLB rules are different from the NHL rules.

Looks like the Bruins Marc Savard in that first pic with the mocked up KHL All-Star Game right smack dab in the middle.

    Yup.

Props for the screen grab of Fernandez’s helmet/facemask. I thought I saw something different in it, but it was late in the game when I noticed it, and didn’t have time for a grab myself.

I think the MLB Network will be a source of a ton of Uniwatch material due to all of the older games that are being played. They even had something about the 82 Brewers and in covering that, they mentioned Pete Vuckovich’s mismatched shoes.

from IMDB about that 7 minutes movie:

In the scene where Knudsen hits a home run, there are a few editing mistakes. The filming takes place in Shea Stadium. Well if the Generals were supposed to be the home team, they should have been wearing white uniforms. The other team, the Mets, where the ones wearing white. Also, the up close shot of the Mets pitcher, Dwight Gooden, clearly shows his number as 16. After the home run, the Mets pitcher is shown with number 76. Knudsen is a right handed batter, the distant shot of the home run, shows a left handed batter swinging.

Doug, thanks for gettin the screenie for me of the show “Coach”. I kinda thought it was a Super Bowl Champs poster. Does anyone think those are really big buttons of each champ?

I actually prefer the current pants to the throwbacks, which seem too plain for me.

Interesting point about your pic of the Alworth-throwbacks:

LT began wearing cleats from the Nike Apocalypse line, when he entered the league:

However, in the pic you linked to, LT is wearing a PE exclusive pair of cleats that were not marketed to the public:

Then another pair of non-marketed cleats:

Then a PE Nike Air Zoom Assassin, the continuation of the Apocalypse line:

He then began wearing the LT 1’s:

    And now the LT 2.1:

I saw a few Defensive players wearing these Tomlinson’s PE’s yesterday ala Ronnie Turiaf wearing Kobe’s old kicks.

No, only wishful thinking…I know this isn’t the NCAA where they would simply lose a time-out.

Thanks for the Slap Shot unis link. You know it’s funny… I’ve seen the movie a million times and yet I didn’t remember some of those teams. On a side note, you can buy Ogilthorpe Bulldogs jerseys and Hanrahan Ducks jerseys link. No such luck for the Patriots or Blades (neither of whom I faintly recall).

However, when you have three or four “styles” of Rbk EDGE jerseys in the NHL, Champions League, and AHL (that’s 70+ teams, btw), is it any surprise that Reebok just keeps recycling jersey designs and swapping logos?

Less designs + higher prices = bigger profits for the hockey department of Reebok.

Capitalism is fabulous when it removes individualism amongst teams, isn’t it, comrade?

I had this same thought about the bolts and then realized they were the road team and had no choice.

Meanwhile my brother in law was asking “have the steelers always only had a logo on one side of their helmet?”

and I said yeah.. the one of the other side fell of and stuck on the jersey.

I never knew Junior Mints were that old. It’s nice to see that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups haven’t changed their look in 60 years.

The Chargers could had pulled a Mike Shanahan stunt and shown up in the powder blues – and say they thought the Steelers told them they were going to wear white.

That jersey Knudsen’s team had on link, and I caught the brief night-game show of Doc Gooden. They had some morning shots of County Stadium in Major League as well.

I don’t think the stripe area around the bolt looks that bad, per se, in that it pulls in the color of the jersey. However, on the white jerseys or white pants, I don’t like how the blue area around it doesn’t match the appearance of the bolt on the helmet (which is, of course, surrounded only by white with the light blue and dark blue trim). So in that respect, yes, no surrounding stripe would be better.

But as Paul has noted, the bolt itself on the shoulder and pants looks awful because it doesn’t go the right way, so if the color around it is to be removed the bolt will need to be improved (or at least made to look like the old school version).

However, on the topic of their unis, I must admit I really don’t like the white jersey/dark blue pants with the white helmets. The helmets have virtually no dark blue (at least compared to how much yellow/gold there is), so it just doesn’t seem right to my eye. The way that arrangement looked with their dark blue helmets seemed okay to me, so it’s very much the lightness of the helmet that is the difference for me. Now, I’m not crazy about the dark blue jersey/white pants with the white helmet either, but it’s not as bad.

Really, I think the “powder” blue just looks great with the white helmet (maybe because the light/dark contrast isn’t so drastic), and the light blue area around the bolt on the alt white pants are okay. If they’d come up with light blue pants they could have a road alt as well.

But with the white helmets I think the powder blue should become their main color and the dark blue relegated to their alts.

All white on the road would look best. Plus they could wear at home during warm days early in the season (which they do sometimes, but with the blue pants that defeats the purpose).

And with the 3 meter line half on one side and the other on the the other side, it works perfectly. Maybe they should do this court design for the 2010 Men’s World Volleyball Championship to be held in Italy.

Hmmm…you’d like to think they’d get the podium sign right, wouldn’t you. Last time Colts had blue helments, of course, was the mid-50’s when the horseshoes first appeared on the back of the helmet either side of the white stripe.

Would be a nice way to start a new coaching regime, though, come to think of it. But those white helmets do go back a lonnnnnnnnnng way.

If I remember, they have that logo on their podium and nowhere else.

Late in the day but I’m on the West Coast (so give me a break).

Here’s what UniWatch’s Paul Lukas, a lifelong Mets fan, had to say:

“Compare (anything) to this, and the Mets’ effort comes off looking like amateur hour. Or maybe amateur minute. It looks like one of those cheapo generic marks you see in commercials or movies when the producers couldn’t afford the licensing fees for the real logos.”

…the Brewers are now going to be referred to as “Milwaukee Brewers Baseball presented by Potawatomi Bingo Casino”.

    *sigh*

Now I know that isn’t their “official” name or anything, but it’s still kind of sad.
Seems like it used to be way more common.
I can’t think of any other stadiums right now with the NFL logo at the 50, but its funny because my wife mentioned this over the weekend, asking about when the Panthers did this (to the best of my knowledge, they’ve always had this midfield decoration). I do recall in the mid to late 1980’s/early 90’s? (somewhere in that range), the Denver Broncos had the NFL logo at midfield at Mile High Stadium.

From my 1993 NFL Rulebook, Rule 5, Section 3, Article 2: “For preseason or postseason games, the two competing teams may wear jerseys in their official colors (non-white), provided the Commissioner determines that such colors are of sufficient contrast.”

1.) Is this rule still in effect?
2.) Has it ever been used?

I know they’ve used it for Monster Jam and I think some supercross events within the last couple of years. I’m not sure if that’s a thing of the past, though. I’ve got a friend who’s a booker for those things. I suppose I could give him a call to find out for sure. I’m sure he’d love to get a call about the status of Monster Jam at the Pontiac Silverdome at 10:29 pm CST.

Incidentally, he was sweating out the Chargers-Steelers game for a few minutes yesterday. If the Chargers had won, this Saturday’s Monster Jam at Qualcomm would have been pushed back a week.

The city of Pontiac still owns the dome. They had entered into a contract (bad idea IMO) with a developer but the money never materialized. Thankfully, that exclusive contract expired on Nov 1 and the city is still looking for buyers. Good luck in this economy though! I live in Pontiac and actually work right across the street from the dome. The Steelers used it as a practice facility for Super Bowl XL and that was the last time it was used.

anyone watch mlb network? they are airing ‘Class of 2009’ and mentioned Pete Rose. Bottom of the screen had a Photoshopped current pic of Rose, from his cap he looked like he was just acquired by the 2009 Phillies. With all the pics out there thats just laziness.
from IMDB about that 7 minutes movie:

In the scene where Knudsen hits a home run, there are a few editing mistakes. The filming takes place in Shea Stadium. Well if the Generals were supposed to be the home team, they should have been wearing white uniforms. The other team, the Mets, where the ones wearing white. Also, the up close shot of the Mets pitcher, Dwight Gooden, clearly shows his number as 16. After the home run, the Mets pitcher is shown with number 76. Knudsen is a right handed batter, the distant shot of the home run, shows a left handed batter swinging.
I had a screenwriting class in college that was taught by the writer of “7 Minutes in Heaven.”
