The NHL isn’t the only league that can stage an outdoor hockey game. This past Saturday, the Kontinental Hockey League, which is primarily Russian (further details here) staged its all-star game in Moscow — smack in the middle of Red Square.
Lots of interesting visual details here. In no particular order:
• Wrigley Field makes a nice backdrop to a hockey game, but it’s hard to compete with the Kremlin. Like, really hard.
• The KHL’s all-star uniforms are certainly no worse than what we’ve seen in recent years from the NHL — no extraneous nonsense. From the side, in fact, they’re almost too plain.
• Those Russkies sure have a funny alphabet. (Of course, one word was rendered in perfect English — you can see it just under the collar.)
• Game-time temperature was about 10 ºF, and it dropped several more degrees during the game, so there was a lot of this. (That’s Jaromir Jagr, incidentally — I guess he’s not tucking in his jersey anymore.)
• The frigid conditions probably explain why there were so many empty seats. But even if they’d been at full capacity, the bleachers set up for the game could only accommodate 3000 people. As a result, the atmosphere apparently didn’t live up to the backdrop, at least according to several accounts that I read.
You can supposedly watch the entire game here, although that link hasn’t worked so well for me. As a backup, there are plenty of shorter clips available on YouTube.
Party Update: The venue for this winter’s Uni Watch gathering (which, as previously announced, will take place on Saturday the 24th, 2pm) will be Sheep Station — same place as last winter. Looking forward to meeting lots of you there.

Both Mike and Mark Santorelli are in the Predators’ system. Mike and Mark have been playing for Nashville’s AHL affiliate in Milwaukee, but the recent injury bug has resulted in both players being called up.
Mark started the season in the ECHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones, and is still listed on their roster.

I can’t seem to find a picture of it righ now, but the all-time worst color-on-color game was Wisconsin playing at Illinois somewhere around the 2003-2004 seasons. The Badgers wore their standard red on the road, while the Illini wore their orange alternate. You couldn’t tell the teams apart on the television. Maybe someone will have some luck finding a photo from this game. I’m still searching…

If the NFL played it’s Pro Bowl as a flag football match would they get fewer viewers? It’s not real football anyway and I can understand why players whose bodies take such a beating wouldn’t really want to engage in another round of violent combat. I always assumed fans just tune in because there isn’t anything else on the tube and a flag football game could be just as fun to watch.

Forgive me for both a late comment, and if this has been brought up already, but life got in the way of things and I was late in reading the ESPN article on the Mets sleeve batch. Yeah it is really bad, but I think that this sleeve patch is a tell that Citigroup is going to be no more. There is no way a company would put so much cash into naming a field, and then not insist on being on the sleeve patch that comemorates it. For example, look at the Pudential Center first season patch, Paul rightfully bashed it for having like five “Prudentials” on it. I think this means there is a real chance that Citigroup is a goner, and the Mets either know it, or know that it is a real possibility that they’ve hedged with the lack of a ballpark name on the sleeve patch.

Love the Rollerball unis. They look great in action, too, even though the entire sport was color-on-color. There should be a whole site for fictional leagues.. I watched the Raquel Welch vehicle Kansas City Bomber the other day, & while the movie seems to assume the existence of a far-flung roller derby league, you only actually see three teams max. Disappointing.

They’re not allowed to put the Citi corporate brand on the patch. MLB rules are different from the NHL rules.

Well if the Generals were supposed to be the home team, they should have been wearing white uniforms. The other team, the Mets, where the ones wearing white. Also, the up close shot of the Mets pitcher, Dwight Gooden, clearly shows his number as 16. After the home run, the Mets pitcher is shown with number 76. Knudsen is a right handed batter, the distant shot of the home run, shows a left handed batter swinging.

I had this same thought about the bolts and then realized they were the road team and had no choice.
Meanwhile my brother in law was asking “have the steelers always only had a logo on one side of their helmet?”

The Chargers could had pulled a Mike Shanahan stunt and shown up in the powder blues – and say they thought the Steelers told them they were going to wear white.

I don’t think the stripe area around the bolt looks that bad, per se, in that it pulls in the color of the jersey. However, on the white jerseys or white pants, I don’t like how the blue area around it doesn’t match the appearance of the bolt on the helmet (which is, of course, surrounded only by white with the light blue and dark blue trim). So in that respect, yes, no surrounding stripe would be better.
But as Paul has noted, the bolt itself on the shoulder and pants looks awful because it doesn’t go the right way, so if the color around it is to be removed the bolt will need to be improved (or at least made to look like the old school version).
However, on the topic of their unis, I must admit I really don’t like the white jersey/dark blue pants with the white helmets. This is totally off topic for the day but after watching the divisional playoff games this weekend I realized that both the Giants (Jets) and the Panthers have the NFL logo on the 50 yard line and not a team logo. The reason to have it at Giants Stadium is obvious but why Carolina when they are to my knowledge the sole occupants of the stadium? Do any other teams in the NFL forgo a team logo for the NFL logo at the 50?

Team Jagr was a team made of international stars in the KHL, so they went with a common language for the logo’s wordmarks. Team Yashin’s logo had the wording in Russian because his team was exclusively made up from Russian players in the KHL.

Your opinion might be that the Kremlin makes a nicer backdrop than Wrigley Field…but I disagree. I like the Chicago Sports history connection myself. You can stick an ice rink anywhere…hell even in front of the Whitehouse…but I think its pretty special to utilize a sports facility so rich in history…for what the NHL hopes continues to be a well received and historical hockey game. It’s not solely the Hall’s call, but they have the supreme say. If Rickey wanted to go in with no logo on his helmet, I’m pretty sure he’s go in like that.

i may not be the first to point out that reebok isn’t english — it’s afrikaans (even though the company was founded in england, it’s named after a kind of gazelle the british english spelling of which is rhebok).
what paul means is that reebok is rendered in roman script, as opposed to the cyrillic alphabet.

I also found that the Italian flag is supposed to have three equal vertical sections, so the court would be correct, because it would be 6 meters, 6 meters and 6 meters. And with the 3 meter line half on one side and the other on the the other side, it works perfectly. Maybe they should do this court design for the 2010 Men’s World Volleyball Championship to be held in Italy.

Hmmm…you’d like to think they’d get the podium sign right, wouldn’t you. Last time Colts had blue helments, of course, was the mid-50’s when the horseshoes first appeared on the back of the helmet either side of the white stripe.
Would be a nice way to start a new coaching regime, though, come to think of it. But those white helmets do go back a lonnnnnnnnnng way.

I can’t think of any other stadiums right now with the NFL logo at the 50, but its funny because my wife mentioned this over the weekend, asking about when the Panthers did this (to the best of my knowledge, they’ve always had this midfield decoration). I do recall in the mid to late 1980’s/early 90’s? (somewhere in that range), the Denver Broncos had the NFL logo at midfield at Mile High Stadium.
From my 1993 NFL Rulebook, Rule 5, Section 3, Article 2: “For preseason or postseason games, the two competing teams may wear jerseys in their official colors (non-white), provided the Commissioner determines that such colors are of sufficient contrast.”

I know they’ve used it for Monster Jam and I think some supercross events within the last couple of years. I’m not sure if that’s a thing of the past, though. I’ve got a friend who’s a booker for those things. I suppose I could give him a call to find out for sure. I’m sure he’d love to get a call about the status of Monster Jam at the Pontiac Silverdome at 10:29 pm CST.
Incidentally, he was sweating out the Chargers-Steelers game for a few minutes yesterday. If the Chargers had won, this Saturday’s Monster Jam at Qualcomm would have been pushed back a week.

The city of Pontiac still owns the dome. They had entered into a contract (bad idea IMO) with a developer but the money never materialized. Thankfully, that exclusive contract expired on Nov 1 and the city is still looking for buyers. Good luck in this economy though! I live in Pontiac and actually work right across the street from the dome. The Steelers used it as a practice facility for Super Bowl XL and that was the last time it was used.
anyone watch mlb network? they are airing ‘Class of 2009’ and mentioned Pete Rose. Bottom of the screen had a Photoshopped current pic of Rose, from his cap he looked like he was just acquired by the 2009 Phillies. With all the pics out there thats just laziness.
