In the Beginning

God2-Sistine_Chapel

We’re here today to bring you the annual Uni Watch changing of the god guard. As you know, Bryan Redemske has just completed his tour of duty and Phil Hecken is beginning his. With that, UW brings you an excerpt of Bryan’s exit interview with new intern bench coach Phil.

PH: Bryan, thanks for all your work. How’s this thing work?
BR: When relevant content is short, you can make fun of most anything. It helps when Carlos Guillen is around, but in a pinch you can go with Miguel Cabrera or pretty much any NBA player.

PH: No, I mean, THIS thing…the “ban” button
BR: OH, that…

PH: I can ban people, right?
BR: Not only can you ban people, you can look up IP addresses and e-mail accounts. And from there, you can find out where they live, how much they make and through which bank they got a car loan.

PH: Frikkin’ sweet. Should I be careful of making fun of people?
BR: For maximum impact, a finding a high schooler is key. First, they’ll almost always look like idiots (I know I did). Second, it totally drives up the page hits. And that’s called “value-added content.”

PH: Does Mr. Lukas like heavy starch, and cream or sugar?
BR: Actually, you’ll find it interesting to know that Paul exists mostly on brisket, pulled pork and Diet Coke. By the way, I schedule my brisket deliveries for Tuesdays.

PH: Is it true you once won a bicycle race with only one tire and no chain?
BR: Totally untrue. I won it without a bike. And I was wearing flip-flops at the time.

PH: What’s this hockey thing I keep hearing aboot?
BR: It’s like soccer, only with sticks and shit.

PH: Soccer?
BR: Yeah, soccer. It’s big in Japan, apparently.

PH: Will the Cubs ever win a World Series?
BR: Yes. Simple law of averages. If the Phillies can win two, while also being the losingest team in sports history, surely one of two teams with 10,000 wins can win another.

PH: Well, sounds like fun. Any last words, before we send this off to the readers?
BR: Yeah, clowns suck at football. Remember that.

And so begins Phil’s reign of terror tenure as bench coach. Be nice, he still has his training wheels.

Stay gold, pony boy…

— Phil Hecken

welcome Phil. Don’t freak out if after next weekend some people are screaming for Bryan to come back. Revisionist history is grand isn’t it?

not actually a comment on saturday. this goes back to thursday (i’ve been catching up). maybe paul could paraphrase “yankee stadium will be in a constant state of artness” as an alt slogan to run atop the page on home-game fridays. and, in the true spirit of altness, the entire page should be black with reverse type. by the way, i thought the yanks showed constanza the door.

HAHA! That was one of the best weekend posts in a while. I think that Phil and Bryan should become a running feature!

    This isn’t exactly uni-related, but it’s close.

In college football, I’ve heard it is the responsibility of the visiting team to provide the footballs for the game. If you notice, most of the time the ball is stamped with a logo of the visiting school. I noticed an article about Michael Crabtree that showed a picture of his game winning catch against Texas which was a home game from Texas Tech, but look at the ball in the picture:

    link

    A) Am I wrong in my understanding that the visiting team provides the footballs and
    B) If not, why is there a Texas Tech stamp on this ball?

    Joe D,
my understanding of the football situation is the away team brings the ball they want to use while they are one offense, and home team uses the balls they want while they are on offense too.

    First, welcome Phil!

Secondly, here are some pics of the Sooners in game action with the new uni’s…I really dig them. I just wish anyone who wore a t-shirt underneath would wear a tighter fit (nike fit for example) as it’d look cleaner with the SOD.
    link

Glad you solved the Mystery of the Other Shoe yesterday. Yeah, it was a Puma, the first blue ones and red ones had that white tongue. But it can be a little tricky cuz so did some of the first blue and red Nike.

Also please someone mentioned Bauer as one of the other shoemakers that shod MLB players for a while (Fred Lynn and Dave Stieb are two that come quickly to mind). They’d been left off the list during that discussion.

    And, Phil…

Phil, Phil, Phil, you’re part of The Establishment now (oh, like that means anything around here, LOL).

And Bryan, thanks again. “Don’t let ’em give you any shit about your ponytail” (Marshal Sam Gerard, THE FUGITIVE)

So sensitive. Phil was involved so apparently he was a jerk, so now I guess you’ll hate his weekend posts too.

And for the record, I believe Bryan was only posting what many of us were thinking. Also it’s High School: link (Scroll down to right above Six-man)

I know that this won’t get much love here because its racing, but I think some pit crews are wearing what I can only consider “merit decals” on their helmets.

I love the AU uniforms, but that could be just because I go there… Funny story… We actually spent I think somewhere around $1.5 Million to patent our own colour blue.

And, if my memories of HS are the same as the college procedures, the balls are sometimes switched out before an obvious punting situation, so that the receiving team is receiving their own ball.

As a High School Official, I can attest to this.

For example, after a team scores or starts a half, they will often kick off with a “Balloon Ball” so that it will carry more and will be harder for the opposing team to grasp it.

As the Head Linesman, dude on the chains, it is my job to inspect the ball before the kick-off.

After the return has ended, the chains are being set, the ball is spotted and the QB brings the offensive ball out to be switched with the “K” ball.

    Oh, and BTW, welcome Phil!
Thanks for entertaining me on the weekends, Bryan!

Great way to start off fellas!

I know I’m probably just about the only one who cares about this, but UAlbany has new uniforms (again.)This is my third year at the school and this is the third set of uniforms they have had since I’ve started here. Basically, the added the multi-colored striping on the shorts and the stupid “A” on the left side of the shorts. Thank god I’m graduating in less than a month.

K-State broke out its lavender-top uniforms last night.
    link
According to the K-State Web site, the uniforms originated in the ’70s when head coach Jack Hartman was tired of the jerseys being labeled “dull” and asked Jim Knight of Knight Sportswear in Salina, Kan., to come up with something more colorful to give the Wildcats a boost. The SOD versions looked better than the baggy ones they used a couple years ago. Still, not a very good look.

Love it! Like I said the other day, I saw them in person and was very happy. Now, we can only hope the look translates on TV, where most will see it.

If we could just get rid of the orange jerseys in football, and go to the “throwback” style full-time…. we’d have ourselves some good lookin’ Hokies!

The mentioning of The American University in the Sooners part made me go look at our site. I noticed that under pictures for the volleyball team, that the Patriot League uses red, white and blue balls for their tourney…

Ricko, we love ya old man!

It is a sad commentary that a person out in Minnesota can check out the Princeton-Yale game, but someone equidistant between both schools can’t!

I would much rather be watching that than Rutgers-USF or Northwestern and Michigan!

Hell, give me Army, 30 minutes away, than any of the games available!

Not sure M-angelo has Bryan & Phil in mind but I guess I see a resemblance. Looks like Phil’s been to the gym but he may want to consider one of those “enhancement” aids.

I’m sorry, but there’s something that’s been bugging me the last 24 hours. Yesterday Paul showed the official game ball of the Iowa State Volleyball Championships as an example of the “breast cancer awareness trope” because it has pink. Well, that is not why the ball has pink on it. The ball is white, black and pink because white, black and pink are the colors of the link. It’s not cancer awareness, it’s brand awareness.

My guess is that’s a patch somebody made to avoid paying licensing fees. There was a TON of that kind of crap around in the 60’s and 70’s, before a) teams clamped down on use of words like “official” and phrases like “just like the pros wear” and b) fans got hip to the B.S. (to some extent because of increased visibility provided by cable TV with ESPN, etc.) and wanted only the real thing.

you can argue that its dumb and you can argue that they shouldnt wear them just to appease nike…. but the ‘noles in all black look great. can’t deny that.

and as for the oregon unis… im oddly intrigued. they look a lot better with pads under them than hanging on a hanger. i kinda dig em. just wish i could see them in action.

in case you wondered, yes i am a fan of “black for black’s sake.”

They showed the Oregon Unis in a quick highlights clip on tv, and I Dont think they are that bad. At least compared to the others they have. At least the feathers fit the mascot.

Anyway, I was looking for pictures from my old high schools game last night since our rival changed uniforms mid season from the ugly ones that Florida wore for a Nike promotion a few years back

To some new Nike ones. They did not put the pictures I was looking for up yet, but I did find these. Notice the reverse bengal’s helmet, and logo creep on the black “TECH” unis, both on the side of the shoulder and from of the shoulder.

Am I the only one who wants to see a mix up where the Pacers only have their Yellow alternates and the Lakers only have their home yellows?

It would be confusing to watch (like the Illinois orange vs Indiana red) but it would be epic.

I don’t have a problem with those… assuming they’re just a “special occasion” thing. I’d like to see some shots of them in action on the field. I guess I just have to wait for ESPN unless a Eugeneian wants to take a screen grab.
Here’s a better pic

Yeah, I dig ’em. I kinda wish the number was metallic green, just so there was SOME green on there. But overall, pretty cool.

They shoulda sewn ’em down only on the edge closest to the neck…so they’d “flap” when the players ran.

    1) Civil war is 2-weeks from tonight in Corvallis.

    2) Not that I remember, and I hope it stays that ways.

    1) Nov. 29. Versus just ran a promo for it.

The Oregon radio announcers are complaining about how hard it is for them to read the uni numbers. Thanks, Nike! :)

Don’t know what anyone else is watching, but Stanford and USC are tied 17-17 in the third quarter (on Versus).

Uni-wise, definitely a “traditional look” game. Stanford mindful of Jim Plunkett, John Elway; USC the days of Mike Garrett and the other guy, the who’d “never own a pair of those ugly-ass shoes; no, wait, I guess I did.”

I believe it was Sgt. Hulka who said it best, “Lighten up Francis” (or in this case Frank).
I kinda dig the Oregon ‘Darkwing Duck’ Unis. If they were in green instead of black, they might be pretty cool.

    salt lake

I admit I didn’t read the article, but I assume those Oregon wings are silver because they’re reflective, like the tire tracks?

Cuz, y’know, otherwise…we now have silver for silver’s sake, too.

The helmet the RB for the Gophers that had the paint chip off was a Xenith. I had heard a sporting goods salesman said they were “concussion proff”…not sure if the cat from Minnesota would agree!

Canucks are wearing their alts tonight versus the Leafs.

They look good, but they’re just about the same as the existing jersey. Same stripes, same pants, same socks. If you were flipping by, you might not even notice the different jerseys.

Most of the alts are at least eye-catching – they use an accent colour as the primary colour, they throw back to an older design. These are nice but they just aren’t very distinctive.

I like them. They’ve modified their original “stick in the rink” logo to make it look modern, and they added Johnny Canuck on the shoulders. At least they didn’t make them black.

    Provo, Spain?

Here is a slide show of game action:

Not awful, but so much better if they were green. It bugs even more because OSU is orange & BLACK. Its like Texas breaking out maroon unis…

Damn, looks like FSU is gonna go 1-2 in those all-black Unconquered uni’s which to say the least, are ridiculously sweet-looking, and yes, I am a Nole fan. The only win is against Duke, the two losses against Wake and BC.

Marc Andre Fleury sporting a “new” link. For those who don’t know, Fleury had the mask made for last year’s winter classic, when he wore link. The mask was yellow to match with his pads. However Fleury was hurt, so he couldn’t play in the Winter Classic. He has since switched to white pads (per an eye doctor’s suggestion), which makes his yellow mask, white pads, and blue jersey seem a bit uncoordinated.

Those Pens jerseys just didn’t do it for me tonight. It’s not the same indoors in November…I feel like it’s taking away from the mystique of the Winter Classic look. Now it’s just the Mellon Arena in November look.

It looks like these uniforms are a special occasion uniform. This link says that the Ducks are getting new uniforms in 2010:
They showed the Oregon Unis in a quick highlights clip on tv, and I Dont think they are that bad. At least compared to the others they have. At least the feathers fit the mascot.

I LOVE the reverse Bengal helmets!

The uniforms for the Ducks were miserable to see live.

And they gave out really shitty looking hats, which I have one of…

Best part though: They announced over the loudspeaker about the special blackout game, and I screamed out “Thank You Uncle Phil”…
anyone know why LSU wore purple today?
Phil I don’t know the specific reason. I have no connection to LSU. If I remember right they seem to wear Purple at home late in the season for night games. There may be a formula for it but I’m not certain

We wondered if Troy bought the whites out of habit and LSU had to go to purple as a result.

Anyone else Jermain Taylor/Jeff Lacy? Taylor usually represents Little Rock by donning Razorback Red, but tonight the fight was at Vanderbilt. I don’t think his choice of black-and-gold was a coincidence.

anyone know why LSU wore purple today?

I beleive LSU wears the purple jerseys for home non-conference games.

They wore purple for the Appy St., North Texas, Tulane and Troy games.

I thought the Ducks uniforms were great to see in person. I was part of the student section and 90% of the students love them. Thanks Uncle Phil

I must have been one of the 10%. Same with the guy standing next to me.

Lets be honest…the student section loves anything the ducks wear…I know…I was there for the 06 Civil War…we loved the original all blacks…

Central Michigan is planning a Maroon out against Ball State wednesday night. The game is airing on ESPN 2, as CMU will clinch a third straight MAC west title with a victory. Fire up Chips!

both Unconquered uni losses are to BC. We never played Wake with them.
