Oh, Hello There

roy-williams-cowboys_nc.jpg

Hey, still no Paul. Tomorrow. Promise.

Until then … meet Roy Williams. He plays for the Cowboys.

610x.jpg

This is also Roy Williams. He also plays for the Cowboys now. And that brings up an interesting question. Exactly what are the NOBs going to look like? Full names? Or perhaps R.X. Williams, with the X taking care of each player’s middle initial? Or will the Cowboys go like the Braves did with the Joneses? “Andruw, Chipper, your name is just Jones. Go with it.”

We shall find out soon. Regardless of what they do, though, somebody needs to tell Roy Williams he’s wearing his pants like a moron. You figure out which one I’m talking about and take the appropriate action.

And now, lots of ticker:
Matt Bachovchin collected some links from the most recent AAABA college baseball tournament in Johnstown, Penn. According to Matt, “The best team always seems to be the team from Baltimore, who won it again this year, for the 6th straight year.  It’s probably because of their uniforms — and they seem to bring many. This is my favorite; love the striped stirrups.”

But wait, there’s more: Zanesville, Ohio; a Philadelphia squad; one from New Orleans (The white under-arm strip seemed brighter than their pants). And this is a mix of all sorts of stuff. And here’s some history, too: Pete Vukuovich in 1972, Ron Swoboda in 1963, the 1961 Washington team, Steve Garvey in 1967, and the 1976 annual report.

Uni Watch news ticker: Sharp eye on Scott Hansen, who spotted two different Chicago Fire jerseys on Sunday. First half, second half. What’s up with that? … Here’s another follow-up, this one courtesy of James Paterson. Seems Chris Mason’s customized stick was done with a product called Bladetape. The Patrick Lalime one, though, is his own design, “which is probably why it’s so lame.” … Where have you gone, Joe Morris? Well, he’s a uni cop. Alex Putelo gets credit for the find. … Pedro has his porthole, so what’s this? The Coughlin (fill in the blank)? Thanks to Matthew Busch for the note. … Matt Powers checks in with a funky patriot logo on John Jay High School of East Fishkill, N.Y. Other views here (from last year) and here (ditto). … Mr. Powers also has a good view of Riddell’s new Revolution Speed lid on Chris Cooley. He’s the one who looks like he has a robot head, by the way. …. Also, Matt Powers cannot be stopped. I think this popped up in the comments yesterday, but take a gander. I wonder what the inspiration was? Also, while you’re picking up a new pair of shoulder pads, don’t forget the Reggie Bush model. … Brett Crane sent in a shot of Deron Williams’ new shoes in a preseason game last week. … Kyle Mann found some neat old Kentucky football photos. They range from Bear Bryant to some cool sweaters, to Kentucky State College to some nice helmet logos. Thanks, Kyle. … Kenneth Levin hit the Sports Legends museum in Baltimore a while back. He found this cool Yankees sweater and this Orioles cap from the 1999 Turn Ahead the Clock game. Cool. … I don’t know who Frank Sinkwich is, but Travis Cuomo sent in a picture of him from 1942, and he looks like a rocket man.

The Cowboys gave Felix and Adam Jones “Jones” on the back of their jerseys, making the presumption the number is what differentiates the two.

I would assume Roy and Roy would simply have “Williams” on the back of their jerseys for the same reasons.

This is a testimonial for one Uni Watch’s sponsors, Classic Old School. They put together a throwback baseball jersey using a single old photo, and it looks great. The jersey is a dead ringer, and Classic Old School did it for a very fair price.

Here is the original photo (please note the all purple, just for our Founder’s benefit):

    link

And here is some ugly guy (not the same fellow from the photo, it should be noted) in the throwback:

    link

Classic Old School even did an excellent job of adjusting for the very faded nature of the jersey in the photo.

But Roy Williams (the defensive back) already has R. Williams on his jersey. Maybe Roy Williams (the receiver) will just have Williams.

. . . and the Cowboys still suck.

This is from last night (Sorry to drag out the Marlins teal jersey thing):

I seem to remember that they did, but very rarely. Is there anyone here who was actually paying attention to the Marlins back in their inaugural season?

Frank Sinkwich was the 1942 Heisman winner.

link, there is a short excerpt which may explain the photo:

Sinkwich made headlines the year before when he played with a special helmet and face guard to protect a broken jaw and became one of the first collegians to use a mask.

Question – Did any of you geeks that criticize how players wear their uniforms ever actually play the game? Whatever the game may be.

Speaking of bicycle pants in football where are the NFL fashion police when you need them? I remember a recent photo from the Texans locker room which outlined proper and improper dress codes and they specifically showed a picture of proper and improper pants length. They seem to be less strict in them enforcement this year.
Also, what is up with a lot of the QB’s shirts cut to waist length so they don’t have to tuck them in?? (Brady, Romo, Favre, etc.)

I just reread the ticker and the Joe Morris article and it answered my own question in regards to the NFL uniform policy. (The NFL still enforces it via fines, but the players don’t give a fuck about the fines they receive.)

Great point! If you’ve never done it yourself, you shouldn’t be allowed to criticize it! So no more arguing about politics, reality shows, or hockey;). Because normal people don’t get involved in thise things, so we have no right to argue about them. Great point, indeed.

The Fire celebrated their 10th anniversary on Sunday. In the first half they wore commemorative jerseys with the anniversary patch and navy blue names and numbers (very hard to see on TV). In the second half, they switched to their regular jerseys (no anniversary patch, white names and numbers). I believe the commemorative jerseys were auctioned off to fans with the proceeds going to the Fire’s charity.

    link was…um…interesting

The Cowboys are notoriously inconsistent with their NOB policy.

Safety Roy Williams wore a FIOB up until last year, even when he was the only Williams on the roster.

In some cases of name clashes, one player would wear the FIOB and the other would go without. For example: link (two years ago, but he wore the FIOB last year, too) vs.
    link

Even with two name clashes so far this year — Brad & Tank Johnson, Felix & Pacman Jones — there have been no FIOBs. Some other clashes from previous years resulted in no FIOBs (e.g. Remi & Akin Ayodele).

I guess the team leaves it up to the individual players. I’m hoping both of the Roy Williames go with “R. Williams” this week. Either that, or the even more confusing “Roy Williams” and “R. Williams” combo.

The Admirals seem to do a lot of Holiday alts. They have a special Christmas and St. Pats uni-kit. But they seem to work in a few others too. Perhaps they’re going to skimp on them a tad and go for the new alts.

Personally they still need retro Brewer pinstriping ;)

Also, I hearby call it the Coughlin Conundrum.

As a lifelong Marlins fan (which is making this Rays run all the more disturbing), I can attest that they did wear the teal jerseys once in a while, but they were mostly a spring training deal. I seem to remember them being worn for a few day games, which were infrequent back then, because the Marlins got special permission to play on Sundays at 5 due to the weather, even though they weren’t on Sunday night baseball.

They also have designs for 21 NHL teams, 2010 Olympic Games, or you can customize your own BladeTape.

You can get more information from link or find them on Facebook.

I believe the example of the Braves and the Jones Brothers (Andruw and Chipper) is wrong.

When Andruw and Chipper were on the same team, one year Chipper would have “C. Jones”, and one year Andruw had “A.Jones”

    Here’s a picture link.

Close….”Texas” Mike Smith (1989-1990), very nearly became a teammate of “Mississippi” Mike Smith (the latter was traded to the Pirates before ever getting the callup). (from link)

And if memory serves me right, Texas Mike Smith had a little Texas patch on his jersey

Patrick Lalime doesn’t use Blade Tape. What are you referring to? The old custom Sherwood goalie sticks he used years ago? Come on, at least have a picture to so show.

I’m glad Paul is going to be back tomorrow. These recent columns have, frankly, been terrible.

Out of curiosity…Is Tom Serveaux your real name or is it a Cajun play on this character’s name:

    two comments folks:

    1) I am a Hornets fan, have been since they were in Charlotte. It is UNCANNY how much the OKC Thunder jerseys look like the NO Hornets jerseys. The colors might be a little different and maybe the font but it is a clear ripoff and totally uninspiring. Whats next for OKC, a yellow third jersey? They went from one of the coolest jerseys, Seattle’s stripe-to lame-o.

    2) Those Chicago Fire jerseys-the first half ones looked horrible. The nob is unreadable. My guess is they ditched it for the white nob for stat keeping purposes or press box purposes.

Those pictures could have been taken in Spring Training (as many baseball card photos have been). The Dempster one definitely looks like it has a spring training backdrop.

It is after the character, but just a respelling from an episode — no cajun in me whatsoever.

I think your guess would be wrong. They actually can tell who most soccer players are (in this league, anyway) without their numbers. There are only 22 of them and with limited substitution and a dedicated crew keeping stats, that wasn’t a big issue.

As DJ mentioned (hey, DJ), they wore one set of jerseys in the first half and those could be auctioned off as “game-worn” before they switched in the second half. Hell, Pete Rose used to change jerseys between at-bats so there’d be more “game-worn” #14 jerseys for him to sell.

In 2006 when the Fire did a tribute to the NASL’s Chicago Sting, they wore jerseys with a Sting comemmorative applique, an NASL patch and GOLD numbers on the back (instead of the white). I have one of those jerseys. The equipment guy does that to differentiate the auction jerseys from regular or knockoff jerseys. The illegibility is just an unfortunate side effect.

Can I ask what they charged for that? That would be a lot of fun to get a “throwback” jersey from the high school days or something like that. Doesn’t look like they have pricing on the website. I suppose it depends on the type of jersey you’re looking for.

A funny related story… back in the mid 1990s I lived and worked in Charlotte, NC when the Carolina Panthers first joined the league. One of their top DBs, Tyrone Poole, came into the video game store I worked at part-time. He bought the then-new Madden 97 (fall of 1996). He came back into the store about a week later. I asked him how the game was; he got all serious and said he was pissed at Madden because he felt his speed and tackling rating was much lower than it should have been.

As for “you gotta play to be able to complain:”

Played football and basketball in my youth. Soccer and baseball since. I didn’t care all that much for uniform conventions as a youth (we had really short shorts in basketball because that was the style. All I cared about was trying to get #44 because of Pete Maravich and they only had #45. And we wore canvas Chuck Taylors.).

As an adult, I care(d) more about getting things the way I felt they should be. Black shoes. Didn’t wear stirrups in baseball (full-color sock), but did keep the pants cuffed just below the knee because I don’t like the pajama look. Hat on straight, brim curved. Everything neat and tidy.

Doesn’t mean I’m not a geek (we all are – look at where we’re posting, for God’s sake). But a lot of the jocks who complain will play fantasy football and then call us geeks? Puh-leeze.

I seem to remember them being worn for a few day games, which were infrequent back then, because the Marlins got special permission to play on Sundays at 5 due to the weather, even though they weren’t on Sunday night baseball.

Probably so. Michigan State had “S” on one side and other side blank for while, but nothing else with different images or characters.

Maybe those “100” stickers might have created some mismatched sides, but that was a ceremonial deal.

Or maybe, just maybe, they had a super-secret audible called “Wildcat” and the decals helped the players remember which way that play was supposed to go. I wonder…. Hmmm…

Years ago I had Joe Theismann’s book about quarterbacking and it had tons of Argo pictures (with the simple “A” on the helmets) in it.

I wouldn’t bet they had different logos on opposite sides of the helmet. More likely they had different logos on the field at the same time. If you go back to the Johnny Rogers Nebraska-OU game in 72 (?) you’ll see that some NU players had NU on their helmets while others had the N you see today.

Actually, the point was, in response to the Seattle/OKC thing, not all team moves are for the worse.

Yes, that’s what I got, but it sounds like KT’s saying that large market teams are inherently more exciting than small market teams (not just more profitable). Not true for me… I would rather watch the Green Bay Packers than the Houston Texans for example. But maybe I’m still missing the point.

Well, between ebay and my files I found photos of ’62 and ’65, but no ’63 or ’64. No shots from the back. Pretty basic in ’62. Navy jersey, white numbers, Sleeve TVs, no striping. Two-color shoulder loops in ’65. Safe bet no NOB; CFL didn’t appear to be doing that, even as late as in ’65.

This looks like right era, but road uniform.

I have to say the link hats are interesting this year. They need to get rid of the New Era logo, I personally can’t stand when they put it on the side of the hat like that. I like the WS trophy on the back and the white panel front is nice, but…that front logo just doesn’t work. First of all, it doesn’t have the League the team was from, which just seems weird to me. Second, the logo looks like they slapped it on with velcro. It didn’t look much better on the players heads either, but anyway go Phils!

They do that with the logos with pretty much every sport because they pre-make so many of them that they can’t afford to embroider the logos into the hats for fear that team doesn’t win. Makes more sense monetary-wise to make one template and just glue on the winner when it happens. Pretty cheap looking, but what can ya do.

Have to say, the gold trophy on the back with ‘WS 08’ on the base is pretty sweet. Almost would make it worth getting it just for that, but I’m hoping for a Phils WS title so I can get the one that celebrates the whole shebang… (and if that happens, I’ll go friggen broke on MLB.com)
