On a Clear Day You Can See Forever 44 Coats of Paint and a Lot of Rust

One of Shea Stadium’s lesser-known details is that there’s a seat positioned directly behind each foul pole in the Loge section, providing just the view you want to have when Ricardo Rincon is coming into the game. Here we find the lovely Collateral Gammage giving the leftfield pole seat a pregame test drive, one of several Shea details in which I was helpfully schooling her last night. (This and many other bits of Shea arcana are covered in today’s ESPN column, complete with video.)

Before the game, we explored the amazing futuristic bus shelters, originally built for the 1964 World’s Fair, located just northwest of the stadium. So incredibly cool. There’s a bunch more photos of these awesome structures here.

Had a blast at the game, not least because reader Eric Garment found me in the stands and sat with us for a few innings. Meanwhile, in another part of the stadium, Uni Watch reader/member Gaylord Fields was sitting next to a guy whose Mets jersey had this on the back. I’d say “Willie 07” would be a closer parallel to the team’s recent performance, but I guess ya gotta believe and all that.

Glorious Fatherland Raffle Reminder: Remember, today’s the last day to help topple the oppressive capitalist monolith by entering the raffle for the College Vault book welfare-state handout. Oh wait, I forgot, capitalism already fell apart all by itself last week. But the raffle will go on as scheduled, just to show that the Uni Watch state can keep the trains running on time. Details here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: This has officially gotten way the fuck out of hand. … Speaking of which, here’s some more about Prince Fielder’s logo-emblazoned underoos, courtesy of a source in the Mets’ clubouse: “All teams have ‘team-themed’ underwear from a company called Toolshed. We have Mets ones, and I’ve seen other ones from guys who get traded here. I’d say maybe half of our players wear ’em, with the other half wearing major companies (Nike, Rebok, Mizuno, etc.). I wore ’em in ’07 but just used a generic brand this year.” Ah yes, Toolshed — such a wonderful underwear brand name, sort of like Dickferbrainz. ”¦ Pillbox caps, a trend that just can’t be stopped (that one was photographed by Adam Walter). ”¦ “I couldn’t be more indifferent about soccer if you paid me to be.” No, I didn’t say that (this time) — Jason Hillyer did. And then he said this: “However, this story about soccer shoes caught my eye this morning.” ”¦ Remember those cream-colored flannels that several old-timers were wearing at the Yankee Stadium? Several people thought they looked a little too creamy, and several others wondered if flannels are always off-white (and if so, why can’t they just be white?). Our own Scott M.X. Turner checks in with an explanation: “Doubleknits are as white as a sheet of paper, but wool flannels (and later wool/cotton blends) were never bleached white. Is there a dyeing process that could make that so? I don’t know. I believe we’d have seen that before the doubleknit revolution took over. In fact, I suspect that was one of the selling points of the new synthetics — ‘pure’ color renderings.” ”¦ Simple but vexing question from Kim Byram: Which was the first college football team to use NOBs? Anyone know? ”¦ Paul Ricciardi recently visited the Penn State All Sports Museum and sent along a dozen pics, which I’ve gathered into this slideshow. ”¦ According to this article, Utah will wear black uniforms on November 6th against TCU (with thanks to Brett Crane). ”¦ Any of you hockey fans know if this guy has any shot at making the Devils? Would make for an awesome NOB (good find by John Vivino). ”¦ The new Yankee Stadium is already finished — in Lego (cool find by Paul Ricciardi). ”¦ Cool article here about the deflating of the RCA Dome’s roof (with thanks to David Soline). ”¦ Coupla days ago I ran an item, but no photo, about Frank Minnifield having his facemask custom-positioned a bit farther back on his helmet, so he face would be closer to the mask. Sure enough (good follow-up by Rick Massimo). ”¦ This is such a simple, effective T-shirt approach — why aren’t there more of these? That’s reader Gabe Kleinfeld, as photographed by his galpal Valerie. ”¦ Mike Begley notes that with Troy Brown announcing his retirement, Boston.com has put up a slideshow of his career, which essentially functions as a great timeline of Flying Elvis-era Pats uniforms. ”¦ Andrew Thomason, who recently created a site documenting the Diamondbacks’ uniform history, has now created a similar one for the Mariners. … Remember when I was trying to establish exactly when the circle-R logo began appearing on the Cubs’ jersey? Guess I should’ve gone straight to Bill Henderson when researching that one. “I’ll forgive you for not bothering to ask the guy who has 63,000 photos of jerseys on his computer,” he says. “1979 was indeed the first year, for sure. You said till someone proved otherwise you’d go with 1980, but trust me on this, it’s 1979.” And let’s face it, it’s hard not to trust someone who also sends you a photo of a sumo wrestler throwing out a first pitch. ”¦ See the crossed-cannons forehead logo on this mask? Matt Lesser is wondering if it’s appeared anywhere else, or if this is the only place it’s being used. ”¦ What kind of number font is this? Can’t even be sure of those are 1s or 7s (with thanks to Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Also from Jeremy: “The China Sharks, part of the Asia League Ice Hockey (that is how it is on the web site) have just moved their operations to Shanghai and the San Jose Sharks have a working agreement with the team. Here’s San Jose’s mascot, SJ Sharkie, showing off the China Sharks jersey.” ”¦ Lots of additional pics of the new Illinois hoops unis here, and this time maybe the players’ poses and hand gestures and hairstyles and the way they tie their shoes will meet with everyone’s approval (if not, blame Andrew Joseph). ”¦ Jeremy again: “Seibu Princess Rabbits, a women’s ice hockey team in Japan, has a player named Asami ÅŒhashi or Ohhashi. But her NOB does not have a macron or the double h — instead, it look like this.

Well, the soccer player appears to be Arjen Robben, who as a pretty solid left wing player, would traditionally be an 11 (it is also Arjen Robben’s number!). Japanese number seven would look very different (but they obviously use western numbers in some unis and fashion)–Robben plays for Real Madrid.

I feel sorry for reader Eric Garment who was obviously berated by Paul the entire time they sat together for having his jersey untucked.

The serif for the 1 just looked strange to me.

I just looked at a video for Letourneau-Leblond and he just has Leblond on the back of his Devils uniform.

I’m definitely not trying to bring the tuck/untuck argument back, this is tongue in cheek…

but, there’s always a lot of cheesecake for the guys around here and not so much for us ladies, so here’s a a vote in favor of untucking:

“See the crossed-cannons forehead logo on this mask? Matt Lesser is wondering if it’s appeared anywhere else, or if this is the only place it’s being used.”

The crossed cannons on that Columbus Blue Jackets-themed street hockey goalie mask are there because the Blue Jackets have a cannon on the upper concourse at one end of Nationwide Arena that gets fired everytime they score a goal.

That Chiefs shirt is pretty cool, if anyone knows where to get it…I want it. I have a distressed hat that has the same helmet design on the front and thats it, I will try to get a picture of it. Even though its Reebok, I bought it since the logo was not on the outside. Reebok has one of the ugliest logos in sports or business in general.

Another note, I thought Oregon State looked pretty good in their Bright Red jerseys last night, even better in HD

What is it about soccer uniforms that causes typeface designers to lose their heads?

MLS numbers this year have 1s and 7s that are utterly indistinguishable in practice.

DC United signed a new player who wears 17. At his first game none of the people around me knew this, so we debated whether it was 77, 17, or 71. We just knew that Emilio had 11, so that was out.

And let’s face it, it’s hard not to trust someone who also sends you a photo of a sumo wrestler throwing out a first pitch. …

Sumo wrestler? I thought that was Livan Hernandez warming up before a game.

Indianapolis didn’t waste any time deflating the RCA dome. I live close by to the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan and it is still inflated since it “closed” in 2001. (although it is used sparingly)

Well, that’s the way it works around here. Detroit is just getting around to tearing down Tiger Stadium (closed 1999)

OK, another request… I cant find a tee shirt I saw on TV at an ECU game… It was plain purple, with a logo (Might have been Pee Dee, might have been a Jolly Roger) just below the neck line, and across the chest were the words “No Quarter”…

Extensive searches turn nothing up for this shirt, does anyone else have any info?

Based on my limited Japanese gleamed from translating Jpop CDs, they’re probably doing a “by the book” romanization to get “Oohashi”. “oo” is probably what the translation program spits out, people usually change it to “oh” because “oo” is a separate sound in English.

The crossed cannons also represent the Artillery Officer’s hat badge used by the Union Army. My son and I were just discussing that the other night as he has a Civil War hat with the crossed rifles as an insignia, which were not used by either side.

The sumo wrestler is Konishiki, the great Hawaiian ozeki champion.

The picture is from the 1996 MLB tour of Japan at the Tokyo dome.

The number 333 is not how much he weighed in kilograms. He just had gastric bypass surgery last year. He has already lost 150 lbs, so he should be at around 400 lbs. His highest weight in sumo was around 580.

Here he is in high school, #79

He even threw out a pitch at a San Francisco Giants game.

    I’d try asking here:

That Seattle Mariners uni-history site is fantastic! But looking closely at their first year design, what’s up with the letter “i” on their home jerseys?? It’s clearly a lower-case font, but there’s no dot over the “i”, and the “i” is the only letter that has a serif, yet the serif is only on the bottom part of the letter whereas a correct lower-case “i” would have a serif at top and bottom…

    Bizarro…

Looking through the Troy Brown gallery reminded me just how god-awful the 1980s/1990s Jets unis were, and what a welcome sight their return to the Namath era unis have been. Now the rest of the AFC East needs to embrace their respective historic unis, which are all astoundingly better than the crap they all wear today (the Bills in particular).

More weirdness at that Mariners’ site…jump ahead to 1981-82. They’ve made some changes; the lower-case “i” no longer has a serif but still has no dot.

But look at the fourth pic down. It shows Gaylord Perry in the home jersey next to a teammate wearing a Mariners jacket. The lettering on the jacket is a different font than the jersey, and even the trident “M” is different on the jacket, being rounded at the top of the tines instead of spiked!!

Actually, my guess is that she used a double o because the “ÅŒ” in ÅŒhashi, meaning “large”, is spelled (in Japanese phonetic hiragana) with two of the letter o (お). The other, much more common, way to make a long o is to write an o (お) followed by an u (う).

The pronunciation is basically identical, so in romanization you wouldn’t worry about the quirks in hiragana spelling, but these days more and more people are using the Roman alphabet to type Japanese on computers. Here’s an article on this link.

Basically, if you want to type the name ÅŒhashi (大橋), you have to first type in the roman letters that will give you the correct hiragana, which will then be converted into kanji (Chinese characters) So “oohashi” will convert correctly, “ouhashi” or “ohhashi” won’t, and “ÅŒhashi” (with a macron) can’t be typed on a Japanese keyboard to begin with. These days you’re seeing more and more people romanize Japanese based on whatever they would have typed to make it scan correctly on a computer, rather than “regular” romanization rules. (This is called You also see alternatively, nonstandard romanization going uncorrected because people are using the logic, “if it gives me the right word when I type into a computer, it must be right”.

Personally I wish they would just use macrons for all long vowels — diacritical marks always look cool — but sports teams have usually chosen to use the “h” for jersey NOBs. I suspect that this is because when NOBs were first becoming popular, link would have a really weird-looking single-letter-plus-diacritic NOB, so they used an H instead. Maybe we could give the legendary Mr. Oh, who is retiring from managing this season, an exception, and make only the non-immortals use macrons.

Sorry to dissapoint you, Paul, but as others have mentioned, Letourneau-LeBlond’s nameplate reads only as “LeBlond” (although there is a small cap E).

I watched him play all last season for Lowell in the AHL.

I think Lowell might have led the league in hyphenates, but only one player used it.

    There was Pierre-Luc Letourneau-LeBlond (LeBlond)
    Olivier Magnan-Grenier (Magnan)
    Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre (Grand-Pierre)

They looked pretty darn orange on both my plasma and my LCD.

And 100% horrid. The black/orange/black look seemed like a bad high school team. but since they won, this will probably forever be the new OSU home look. :(

The Mariners have certainly had a long standing non-offensive but boring look. That’s a cool site though, I hope he does more teams, especially teams with some interesting uni history, like the Pirates and A’s.

Oregon State looked red to me too. When I glanced over at the game, I absent-mindedly asked myself who USC was playing, because I did not recognize the red-and-black uniforms.

“Texas Tech? No. Hmm, who could it be? Oregon State? What the hell . . . I would have sworn that their colors were orange and black . . .”

I’m gonna have to agree with this statement. On my LCD HDTV, the OSU uni’s did have a slight reddish tint to it, but after looking at it for a while, it was more of a deeper (construction worker) orange. And my TV is calibrated. The AP photo did not look like the uni’s that were on my screen last night. The way it looked on my TV had a little more “neon” or “pop” to it.

I thought Oregon State looked good in their orange (but red to some) jerseys last night. They seemed especially nice every time ESPN flashed back to the last time OSU beat USC in Corvallis and the Beavers were wearing those old hideous Nike templates with the garish shoulder/chest striping. Note to Nike: less is more.

Right now this is the best thing going on in sports. Passion. Excitement. Pure joy. There is nothing better than hitting a WALK OFF GRAND SLAM too keep your team tied for the playoffs. Milwaukee hasnt sniffed the playoffs since 1982. Last nite when I was watching the game I thought to myself, when was the last time i cared this much about a Brewers game in September. Ryan Braun and the Brewers are about something this year and that is making it to the playoffs. Milwaukee and Wisconsin love the Brewers because of their passion for the game and the chance for this to be a truly special season at Miller Park. I love Braun and the Brewers excitement and passion for the game. Untucking a jersey after a game as a tribute to hard working fathers is certainly much better than some ‘pedro porthole.’ Think outside the box for once in your life Paul. I have a really strange request for my fellow UWers… I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a camouflage basketball. A normal sized one, not just a mini one. Any help on this would be awesome.

Another weird thought going through my head today:
When did undershirts in baseball become kind of the norm? You find almost nobody in today’s ball games who don’t wear an undershirt. Is it possible to pin point an era where undershirts became kind of standard? Or have ball players always worn them and it just wasn’t as noticeable back in the day?

it’s surprising how cool those 90s patriots jerseys look. i actually hate every element individually — the ugly drop shadow, the ridiculous italicized numbers, flying elvis, the red-white-and-blue colors i couldn’t be more sick of (due to overuse more than “patriot”-ism or anti-ibid.) and i remember laughing at them back in the day.

yet, it’s so much more fun than the current corporatized patriots dark blue and silver

I’d have to agree, I have turned all my friends into uni-fans, and when we were talkign at half time we were all sayign how much we liked the Orange Uni’s. The color on my LCD looked liek a very rich orange color, and it looked really sharp. I also love their typography, how the tops and bottoms of teh numbers have a cure to them but the sides are flat, it just looked good.

Also as a side note, USC usually has problems with their jersey numbers, but last night, they were so bunched up there were several players who I couldnt identify because their jerseys were so stretched or bunched up. it looked terrible. Why can’t they fix that?

I’ve been afraid to ask, because I’m sure I won’t like the answer.

Here’s another interesting question: The architectural firm that designed Shea was Praeger-Kavanaugh-Waterbury. If you google them, you find that they also did the mid-’70s renovation on Yankee Stadium — and that’s it. Almost nothing else comes up. They don’t appear to exist anymore, and I haven’t found records of any other buildlings they designed (not that I’ve looked all that hard beyond google, to be fair).

When I was taking the video tour, I asked if anyone had been in touch with the arch. firm — after all, this is one of their biggest projects (presumably), and it’s about to be dismantled. The answer I got was a blank stare and “Actually, nobody thought of that. Who was the firm, anyway?”

Collateral Gammage is an architect herself, and she tells me that arch. firms tend not to last very long. “It’s more about the person, not the firm,” she says. “You rarely hear people say, ‘Such-and-such firm designed this building’ — instead, they talk about the PERSON who designed it.” I had hoped to dig a little deeper and try to find one of the Praeger-Kavanaugh-Waterbury partners, but there wasn’t time. Food for future thought, though.

I guess this is good news for all of you that dislike the “leotard” look that it creates.

I personally think that it looks stupid on a player by player basis, but when you look at the entire team together wearing it, it looks pretty awesome.

Paul, fascinating Page 2 article. You brought forth so many interesting things about Shea that a non-NYC resident would otherwise assume was a bland, cookie-cutter stadium. Being from Buffalo and an Indians fan, I certainly miss some of the idiosynchrocies of old Cleveland Municipal when my father wouyld take me. I don’t miss the Tribe teams from that era, however! Post of the day.

Well, now…the weekend had definitely started early here on UW!

I spend a few hours away from UW only to come back and find the inhabitants arguing over:

    1. Orange/Red
    2. Who owns Converse/Nike
    3. My name being used in vain for NO APPARENT REASON…but I digress

We all seriously need to tone it down…UW is going to lose credibility if the only discourse becomes argumentative.

I’ll be away fro a week…hanging out with my ladies, Mickey and Minnie down in Orlando.

I really hope to come back to a harmonious UW and not the bickering bullshit that has been rampants here for awhile.

Oh, and by the way, in the Illinois team pic, Keller has the same pose that irked us, me, last week! However, their unis are very cool, especially with the nod to Illiniwek!

And in this time of economic unrest, the methods and business practices of Nike SHOULD be revered and admired…Brainwashed, no…reverent, YES!

    Hey Paul,

I have been a regular observer of your website for sometime now. I am well a where of your on going NOB/FNOB documentation. I do play-by-play for a junior team in Victoria, BC, Canada. NO doubt…I don’t think that I need to prfess my love for the site to anyone…but the weekends and some of the random arguments get old!

Amazing article on Shea today, Paul. You made me feel as if I had spent many a night in that stadium. One of your best pieces ever.

Wow, great work on the M’s uni site. The TBTC section is just loaded. My fav is the shot of the guys in the bullpen wearing the Pilots uniforms, one guy wearing sweet stirrups and some hammerhead with bellbottoms. God forbid he should have jeopardized his career by wearing something different for a day.

my ladies, along with Mickey and Minnie…Hell, Disney is so great I might well have named my daughters after those two!

its funny the side by side football/baseball drawings are not of what was actually done, based o the drawings it was supposed to be just the 1st base side that moved and the 3rd base side was stationary.

The Mets wore their white home jerseys last night with their blue caps…I gotta believe that the Official home uni with blue caps will be worn on Sunday, if not the entire weekend. In Charlie Samuels I trust.

Someone posted a link to a Mariners uniform site a few months back and I bookmarked it (link). Not as comprehensive… maybe more of a work in progress. But there’s a few different images there.

I went to a couple games at Shea when I was a kid. We sat way up in the upper deck both times.
During one of the games, I remember some guy sitting across the aisle from us holding a 4 foot long stuffed-animal rat, dressed in a Cardinals uniform, and he had it hanging from a noose that he was holding. He kept standing up, yelling, and pretending he was hanging the rat.

Gee what rare qualities in a pro wrestler, good taste AND modesty.

Hey Murphy, forget the deek, CATCH THE BALL!

Jeff Suppan needs to stick with his best pitch…a ball. Seriously, he’s been devastating out of the zone, BP in it.

My dad is a union carpenter and talked to the guy today who has the contract to remove the seats from Shea. 140 carpenters will have 15 days to remove all the seats. they want Shea gone and a parking lot by opening day next year. The seats will be removed in pairs with the 3rd seat in between dismantled thrown in a dumpster and a company will make pairs out of those parts. 5 crains will be lowering the seats down. the seats will also be sandblasted to remove all the lead paint. then repainted. i argued that a repainted seat sucks because the seat was at Shea but not the new paint. I would want a seat with all the layers of paint.

Those Yankee usis at the stadium swansong were indeed a little too “creamy.” Nice for a nostalgia show, but not wholly accurate. I have never seen a color photo of either Berra or Ford, for example, from their playing days in a uni that color. By the early to mid-50s, manufacturers has figured out how to make white flannels quite white. As a kid, I remember noticing the creamy quality, but only when I saw photos of players who’d played before my time (no, LI Phil, that doess’t mean about the time me and Abner Doubleday’s sister invented the hit-and-run).

Here’s a 57 Topps showing a Yankee home flannel that isn’t so “creamy.” Most all of the ’57 Topps Yankee cards will show this whiter flannel, and I’ll tell you for sure the early Twins home unis, which were flannel pins, weren’t creamy. At least not THAT. Yeah, the doubleknits are whiter, but leap was from creamy flannel to doubleknit white. Check the ’57 White Sox ,too. Their World Series special white stirrups were clearly white, and clearly the same color as their white home pins.

Good to see you back, Ricko. I;m with you on the shading of those unis. My theory is that they based it on the current state of 50 year old flannels. I wrote earlier that I have one from ’69 that has yeallowed and I know that it originally was snow white.

ricko! you’re alive! was gettin worried about ya

Paul, you’ll be happy to know that the Toronto Blue Jays are scheduled to play at home on July 1, 2009. That means we should be treated to a new version of their Canada Day jersey.

Saw post about mirror under my nose. Made me think of, “He leads the league in every offensive category, including nose hair.”

re: Yankee creams. Another example of “Let’s do it the way we THINK it was, not the way it REALLY was.”

Seems to be society-wide trend. Re-defining history so it will read the way we want it read.

Like the new Tom Cruise movie where they’re now modified the Nazi swastikas on the uniforms in the poster. Guess we’re supposed to worry about offending Nazis now. Cuz of the flap about the way Soviet Union was portrayed in Indy4, I wonder?

    Hey, this is uni-related.

    Part Two…

“Look for confused elderly Tom Cruise fans spitting out popcorn at the first ‘Sig Heil!'”

Tell you what, it’s a sad comment on our education system if someone thinks only the “elderly” know about “Sig Heil”.

Or that such people are so easily “confused”. What a piss poor cheap shot from some blackberry-addicted know-it-all.

Damn, thought I corrected that. Aw, what the hell, if didn’t have a typo you’d think it was an imposter. Damn small keyboards. I learned to type on on old manual Underwood where the keys were about as far apart as a dozen tic tacs dropped on a glass tabletop.

Anyway, have discovered somethig about college football. If one team is traditional and the other has the “new” look, it’s visually manageable. But when both teams have the “PPPP” looks (Piping, Panels, Placets and Patches), then it’s just…dopey.

Ebbets Field Flannels made those uniforms, and they’re the best throwback manufacturer out there. Hands down.

As for the Tom Cruise poster, given how powerful the swastika is as a visual symbol, how primal it is, how much it can overwhelm any conversation (Godwin’s Law wasn’t articulated because the Internet lends itself towards nuanced, complicated arguments, after all), not surprising that the studio doesn’t want to make it the focal point of their ad campaign.

Thanks for the kind congrats LI Phil… Hopefully the rain will subside and you guys can get your game in 2morrow. It’s gonna be a fun weekend. A nervous weekend, but fun.

    Time to un-tuck ’em boys!!!

I suppose, but considering that’s what the movie is ABOUT…it’s really like polical correctness carried to an unlealthy extreme. What next, we gonna go back onto the computer and change all the bad guys unis in INDY 1 and INDY 3? Change the dialogue? “Noozies. I hate these guys.”

Not all worked up about it, just is a “brow furrower,” that’s all.

re: Ebbets. Looks like Yankees just had one look for everyone who played before double knits. Yankee unis may have been creamy in 40s, but guys like Berra and Ford wore the whiter versions a lot longer than they wore the cream. And Mantle or Maris probably never did. Especially Maris.

    Shea stadium has cats?
Tell that to Ronnie Santo!

The Ohashi/Oohashi thing is quite common in Japan and rarely do you see the long vowel mark. Adding an “h” is the most common convention, but you see the double vowels as well. It depends on who taught them English in Junior High. Some Japanese teachers of English also use “s” or sometimes a “z” for “sh” and “tu” for “tsu” and there isn’t any consistency to how romaji (roman characters) are used. Nissin (the Cup Noodle company) and Mazda are pronounced “ni-shin” and “Matsuda” in Japanese.

According to a user on Yahoo! Answers, the font on the Real Madrid jerseys (link) is Peignot D Medium.

That “1” is too close to a “7” for my tastes. But i still like it better than the font they used to have: link

They’ve had some strange font choices in the past:
