Dear NASCAR: Please Make the Cars Look Like This

IMG.jpg

Last week I linked to an eBay listing for an old article about NFL helmet carts. I ended up winning the item (I was the only bidder, rather amazingly) and am now the proud owner of the article in question, which was clipped from the Nov./Dec. 1972 issue of the trade magazine DuPont Refinisher News (a publication that was founded in 1928 and still exists today). As many of you know, I’m almost as fond of trade magazines as I am of uniforms, so for me this is a case of two great tastes that taste great together.

The article (which you can read here, here, and here) has some interesting details. To wit:

• The carts were manufactured by a Beverly Hills operation called Sportoys, Inc. I tried googling them but came up empty. Is it possible that manufacturing NFL helmet carts was insufficiently lucrative to ensure the company’s survival? Shocking!

• Very cool that they included all the helmet rivets. But note the square facemasks — it would be interesting to know when the rounded versions started appearing.

• Speaking of the facemasks, note that they’re all gray, since colored facemasks hadn’t yet made their NFL debut (Chargers in ’74, don’tcha know).

• If you look at this photo, you can see that they appear to have applied the Bears’ helmet logo backwards flopped the negative. The photo should look like this.

• According to the text, each helmet received a primer, followed by six to eight coats of paint, then a polishing compound, and then a final clear-coat layer. That’s a lot of paint!

• The last line of the article notes, “What’s more, some major league baseball teams employing similar carts.” This implies that the NFL was ahead of MLB in the headwear-cart development sweepstakes, which is odd, because I’d always thought of these carts are more of a baseball thing than a football thing. I guess I thought that because the baseball carts actually came onto the field of play in the middle of a game to deliver a reliever to the mound, and as a result they became part of the fabric of the sport, while I’ve always perceived the football helmet carts to be little more than kitschy promotional thingies that only get trotted out at halftime or something like that. They seemed more peripheral to the game, while the cap carts seemed more integral (at least in their heyday).

As a result of this perception, I had assumed that the MLB carts came first and that the NFL carts were copycats, but maybe it was the other way around. As it happens, when I wrote an article about MLB bullpen buggies last year, I was unable to determine exactly when the first cap-based cart debuted, and the DuPont article doesn’t indicate when the first helmet carts appeared. But if anyone wants to get crackin’ on research, it would be good to know the chronology of these uni-based vehicles.

Raffle Reminder: I’m raffling off a copy of the excellent new book Remember the AFL. Details here.

On the other hand, the VP’s response said that “I want to let you know that the sculptor of the statue realized the discrepancy and will be correcting it.”, which could simply mean that they are going to resculpt the incorrect helmet, but still leave the swooshes untouched.

Cynical view, but one that wouldn’t entirely be shocking if it actually occurred…..

That look to be the correct assumption. If you look at the Bears’ helmet, there’s no “face opening”, for a lack of a better term on that helmet, leading one to think that the cart is facing the opposite direction from the others….

I bet the negative of the football helmet cart shot just got turned around upside down in the printing.. As a photo teacher, you start to notice these things happening a lot. It wouldn’t make much difference except where there were words and lettering.

Unless one of the dudes in the picture had like a scar or permanent zit on one side of their face and someone wanted to research them and track them down and find out for sure? Probably unnecessary research..

It is a reverse negative because you can notice the 20-yard line on the field and in the picture the “2” is clearly backwards.

Actually, on closer inspection, both dudes are wearing their watches on their rights arms in the picture, which is probably not true, right?

So yeah, it must be a reversed negative..

can’t be…link are facing forward…the cart is either backwards (logical but odd hypothesis) or that logo is simply applied upside down (did governor paterson apply it?? WTF)

doubtful any OTHER photos exist showing the carts in the same order…and in the ‘full team photo’, the bears helmet logo is obscured, so we cannot compare it to the photo in question

Because if you reverse the image, all of the other helmets still look right. The Lions’ and Cardinals’ logos both face forward. If you flip the image, they still face forward and the C is actually a C.

    The negative was definitely flipped.

As opposed to it maybe being the 50-yard line and the negative not being reversed and the Bears cart is merely facing the opposite direction from all the others……?

The photo of “Babe Ruth” is fuzzy, but there does not appear to be adequate spacing between the names. This is obviously a knockoff :P The arching is nice, though.

Ahead of him is another guy wearing a “Dimaggio-5” t-shirt. why didn’t they go the whole 9 yards and include “Joe”?

    REVERSED NEGATIVE:

All of the other logos are reversable, the Bears is the only one in the pic that would be reversed in a negative. And the smoking gun is the reversed \”2\” on the 20 yard line. Any yard line should have a \”0\” on the right side of the line.

It’s backward. You can make out the rivets to the helmet bar. Reverse negative? Uh-uh. The Lion certainly is leaping forward. In the first photo, is that a Peugeot station wagon in the background.

BTW, kudos for the interview yesterday. I’m no Yankee lover, but Tyler’s got to be the coolest job in America … better than vice president! That mag was terrific, even though I don’t think there was one cover where the player (dare I say it was a Royal, there were so many good shots) wore white Converses.
Could the Bears’ cart be facing the other way so that is why the C appears backwards?
The C would still be backwards.

To me, it looks like I can see the opening. Plus it’s sloped like the other carts and appears to have the facemask attachments facing the same way. Looks like a reversed decal to me.

Everyone do a screenshot of the pic, go to MS Paint and flip it horizonally. You’ll see all the logos are still correct, plus the bears now looks correct, and the 20 yard line is correct as well. Photo was flipped…

Sorry not tech savy to place pic on web and link to it :(

Here. I flipped the image. All the carts now look correct and you can see that there’s a 2 in front of the bears helmet (20 yard line).

    link

Also, for those of you that said the helmet was facing backwards… seriously? Have you ever thought that the Bears logo was backwards half of the time on TV? No. Teams with a non-text logo usually have the logo facing forwards on both sides. Text based logos always read left to right. The only two logos that mess this theory up are the Chiefs and Ravens, who have different logos on each side of the helmet… so that the Raven or Arrowhead is always facing forward, but he text always reads left to right.
I bet the negative of the football helmet cart shot just got turned around upside down in the printing.. As a photo teacher, you start to notice these things happening a lot. It wouldn’t make much difference except where there were words and lettering.
Good call. I now see that both gentlemen in the photo are wearing their wristwatches on their right hand, which is atypical (I don’t want to open that whole debate again, so please DON’T start chiming in with info on how you wear your watch … Let’s just accept that most people are right-handed and that MOST right-handed people wear it on their left hand.)

I concede to the reversed negative crowd. Here’s another way to see it: Look behind the guy with the black blazer. It looks like the license plate on the front of that helmet is flipped as well…

To prove that the image is a reverse negative, save it to your computer, open it in Paint, then go to “Image” and flip/rotate, then flip it horizontally.

    ok…

it IS indeed a reverse negative…if you can do this…

    link and get a mirror

you’ll clearly see the “20” yardline in the mirror…and if you affix a “C” to both sides of the helmet, when both are facing the ‘correct’ direction…one will have the open “c” facing forward while the other will have the closed “c”…to wit

we’re SO used to seeing the link from THIS direction…but…

    link

when you reverse the negative, as is the case here…that’s the side they were shooting it from…f’in weird

must have had something to do with the direction of the sun and shadows that day

I don’t think the neg or the cart are backwards. It looks to me that there is a facemask jutting out towards the right in the photo. That would indicate the cart is indeed facing the same way as the others are. I think they goofed on the logo.
Here. I flipped the image. All the carts now look correct and you can see that there’s a 2 in front of the bears helmet (20 yard line).

    Nice job, JTH!

Brilliant observation, LI Phil. I never thought about the direction of the C’s, but when you look at the original photo the decal is indeed correct and the negative is flipped.

What those are are artist renderings based on leaked verbal descriptions. It gives a good idea, but isn’t quite accurate.

    Was that gentle enough?

NHL Third Jerseys for this year have been leaked

Not 100% accurate. The Sabres jersey has been leaked and confirmed and it does not look like the retro shown here (traces of silver and it is navy blue). Plus we’ve seen that the B’s third does not have the yellow trim at the bottom hem-although I feel that looks nicer than the actual. I think most will be close to those depictions, though.

Nothing to do with today’s entry, but I thought I’d write it here rather than yesterday’s comments:

Minna, my wife, not unlike yourself, is a big Hochuli fan. I told her about some stories I read and him getting tons of hate mail and he said he felt terrible and was responding to every message personally.

I sent her the website of his law firm with the email address and she composed a really nice note of encouragement.

Before 11:00 eastern, he responded back with appreciation and thanks. Of course, there is no way to know 100% if it really is Ed, but the way he was talking in the interview seemed really sincere and if I had to bet, I would say it was him.

Just thought that was really cool, here’s a guy with all these SD fans sending him nasty messages and he takes the time to respond. Most folks would edit the corporate website to take down the email address or simply put an autoresponse filter on.

Another reason it is flipped. The Coliseum has those darker seats in the NE(?) end zone and it you look carefully just to the left of the Giants helmets you can see the start of the bleachers that are in the endzone where the scoreboard and arches are.

This aerial is from a different period but you can see the difference in seating and where the bleachers are placed. They would be to the right on the photo in question.

Hochuli will be fine. He’ll be downgraded because of that call, but I doubt anything major will happen to him.

They were discussing this on ESPN the other day: The NFL can live with Hochuli’s mistake. What they really hate is when a referee interprets a rule incorrectly. So while everyone is upset at the rule in question (QB plays whistled dead cannot be reviewed), had Hochuli reviewed the play, overruled the incompletion and ruled it a fumble, that would have been a problem for him, moreso than just admitting he blew the call, because he followed the rulebook to the letter of the law. The rules say the play cannot be reviewed. End of story.

Besides, would you want to go to Hochuli and tell him he’s being demoted to back judge? I sure as hell wouldn’t.

Couple of uni/accessory questions answered by Rockies beat writer Troy Renck
Aloha, Troy. I’m the biggest Rockies fan in Hawaii. What was the obsession with the black-and-white, sleeveless jerseys during August? I really miss the standard home pinstripes. Are they drawing this from the superstitions from last year’s run?

    — Kevin, Honolulu

Kevin – The day’s starting pitcher normally chooses the uniform. Most like the black sleeveless because of the look and comfort. As long as they don’t go back to purple, I am cool with it.

Hi, Troy. I’ve noticed a lot of the major league

“He influences how you pitch those around him. He’s so strong. He can beat you with one swing.” – Dodgers third base coach Larry Bowa, on Rockies slugger Matt Holliday, above (Denver Post file photo)pitchers have rope “necklaces” that they wear on the mound, Luis Vizcaino being one of them. Is there a story behind those? Why is it just the pitchers who wear them? Thanks.

    — Chris Bailey, Broomfield
Chris – The rope necklaces are from Phiten. The titanium bands are said to alleviate discomfort, increase circulation, reduce stress and solve global warming. OK, I kid on the latter because I care. Several players wear them, including Joba Chamberlain and Josh Beckett. Some believe they help. Others like the look. And most, frankly, just keep wear them out of habit or superstition.

They began making them in team colors this season. I have worn one for years, and it seems to help. Then again, it’s hard for a writer to land on the DL with something other than blurry vision or sore fingers.

On ESPN2, two night ago, there was an NFL Films special with Luckett as the main subject. The film stated that he “chose” to become a back judge and eventually left officiating in order to spend more time with his family and religion.

Whether that is 100% the history, I, for one, am not positive, but Steve Sabol seemed to be!

    DAMNIT no sticks!

i think it should be an american flag. i’m sure the tabloids would have a field day with that one.

I would seriously doubt the NFL would demote Hochuli to a back judge. This is a guy, despite what Jerry Jones said in one story I read (why the hell was HE EVEN QUOTED anyway? The Cowboys weren’t involved in that play) that Hochuli and his crew have an excellent repuation.

Prior to Luckett and the “hea-tails” call, which, as a Steeler fan still hurts to this day, was he involved in any controversy or were he and his crew solid? Whether he the league forced him to back judge or if he did in voluntarily, one would think that one “bad call” wouldn’t rate enough to get booted as a referee. (Lord knows the Big East gives more than one bad call….wait for it…a quarter!)

Plus, at the risk of losing my membership in Steeler Nation, was Luckett REALLY wrong? Bettis started to say HEADS, changed his mind in the middle of a one-syllable word. The rule stated at the time the ref went with what he heard first. If any good came out of that, at least we have the pre-toss call now so there is no debate. What would stop a guy from saying tal-heads, heaaa-tails, trying to confuse the ref.

I have an old USFL blooper tape (Pro Football Bloopers or something generic like that but great uni-archival footage, maybe I’ll do some caps someday) and there’s a scene from a coin toss where the player says one thing, the ref tosses the coin but forgets and asks the player who made the call, who has seen how the coin landed and he changed his call. Totally pulls it over on the ref and the guy from the other team is like “YOU CHEATER”!!!

Actually, if anything, that thanksgiving game showed again how stupid the NFL’s OT rules are. I don’t care what stats the league puts out, sudden death is not the right way to handle it. The other team should get a “last bat” if you will. I’m not saying do the terrible college or high school system where they start at the 10 or 20, I’m saying keep the same, real game situation. If you win the toss and kick a FG, you kick off and the other team has a chance to tie it with a FG and keep playing or to win with a touchdown.

It would stop a lot of boring, third down FGs.

What was really disturbing, though, was all the anti-Hochuli vitriol in the comments section. I shudder to think what the outcry would be if this had been a playoff game or the Super Bowl!

Bottom line: Hochuli screwed up. But San Diego had opportunities to stop Denver on a 3rd-and-10, a fourth down, and a two-point conversion. Instead their defense looked like a sieve on that final series.

If memory serves, the artwork for the book’s dust jacket may have been been done by Willard Mullen. Never owned the book, but saw an ad for it once…or maybe it was a little photo on the cover of the Reader’s Digest Condensed Books series at my grandmother’s house. This is a serious check of this bulletin-board-like (meaning cluttered with crap) mind of mine. I’d do the search but I’m at (yuk) work. Thanks in avance.

Thanks. There are old editions out there somewhere, I’m sure. I seem to recall one of those cartoons with all the teams climbing a pole trying to reach the pennant (or something like that). Background was solid yellow, I think. Or maybe green. I’m talking about a time before the film…maybe even before the stage version. Practically before TELEVISION, even. LOL

Ah-HA!!! Gotta love ebay.

Okay, it isn’t players climbing a pole. HAS a pole, and the composition takes the eye from lower left to upper right, that much I remembered. And it is yellow. And it is Willard Mullen. (shakes head) Hadn’t thought about that in years.

    From 1954. So wasn’t quite 30 yet.

Ed Hochuli is not going to be demoted to back judge. He and his crew may not be assigned to any playoff games, but he won’t be removed from his position.

He’s human. We all make mistakes from time to time.

Chalk this play up under “indavertent whistle”. He killed the play. Possession is retained by the same team at the time of the whistle. Denver keeps the ball anyway.

San Diego needs to get over it and find ways to win that aren’t contingent on a late-game fumble by a quarterback.
So who are the bowlers on the AB team? I recognize Don Carter, Dick Weber, Ray Bluth, Tom Hennesey and Pat Patterson. I think one of the remaining two is Bill Lillard. Tough to beat this squad.
I’m with ya, Fran! Team bowling discussions begin and end with the Budweisers.

I did some research on the bowling hall of fame and museum’s photo archive (which is simply fantastic!) and it looks like the 2 guys you’re missing are Chuck O’Donnell & Bill Lillard.

One of my regrets in my bowling career is to have been too young to bowl during the golden age and experience some of that awesome team bowling.

To me, Dick Enberg’s mistakes at the end of the Denver-San Diego game were far more egregious than Ed Hochuli’s. When the Broncos scored the touchdown, he shouted “OVERTIME!” And then after the two-point conversion, he informed the audience that the Broncos had won, despite the fact that there was nearly half a minute left in the game.

    WHERE’S HIS HATE MAIL?

Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of this, but I went to a Yankees game back in June, and walking down the street was a guy wearing a Yankees jersey, #48 (I think) with “NO NAME…OF COURSE” (a la Michael Kay) on the back above the jersey.

I swear I read something 2 or 3 years ago (perhaps on this site?) that said goalies who play for teams with circular logos always have a lower GAA and Save Pct because the human eyes will always focus on a circle (i.e. shots go right into the chest protector).

    2 things:

    1) Unless the carts are going to be used for the games in London, you can see that the steering wheels are on the wrong side in the original.

    2) I was watching the end of the game when Enberg made both those calls. Cut him some slack, he was excited during an exciting game. He also apologized to the viewers afterward because from his vantage point he could not see the clock. (I’m sure he was prompted by his producer to the mistakes, but, as a gentleman, I think the apology was sincerely his.)

On the road, they wore purple pants w/two white stripes back in the day, 1974. That was Vince Gibson’s last year and my first at State. Steve Grogan was qb. It was the last year for white helmets (single purple stripe). At home, it was white pants with a single purple stripe.

The next year, gray was reintroduced (Gibson had it his first year). Except for a couple years in the Stan Parrish era, silver or gray has been part of the football color scheme. I wish they’d stick with purple and white – the school colors as they’re sung in “Alma Mater.”

There’s your purple post for the day.

hmmm…if that is a steelers helmet…the “left” side should look link and the “right” side (using your verbage) should look link…and thus…be BLANK

    ….great catch…question is…is link a steelers lid?
It looks like Steelers, but all these helmets appear to be NFC teams–maybe all the AFC teams were on the other side facing them. So then it wouldn’t be Steelers.
but wait
Steelers were apart of the NFL pre-AFL merger
True, but by the time this photo was taken they had moved over to the AFC upon the creation of the two conferences. All of the identifiable helmets are of NFC teams.

…maybe Man U would put the link on their kits until the AIG slow burn is complete. Talk about awkward international logo creep.

You know, all this chatter about link makes me wonder how he would handle the mess on Wall Street. Maybe he could call link and the two could get down to business.

That’s what I meant, Chance. Sorry if in context it came out assbackwards.

I was listening to the Dodgers-Pirates game (on XM) on the way home from work when I heard one of the Pirate announcers comment on Dodger pitcher Jason Jonhnson and how it looks like he’s wearing a cell phone on his belt. There were a few comments back and forth and a few minutes later the announcer (sounding a little sheepish), informed the listener(s) that the object was an insulin pump. And as if to appear he knew it all along, he reminded everyone of an upcoming diabetes fundraiser.

Heres a pic of The pump when Johnson was a Detroit Tiger. Didn’t find a pic, but here’s a link to a video of Johnson in his Dodger uni wearing an insulin pump It’s at about 8 seconds into the video
