Friday Night Whites

capt.ed20c81851184caf9c0a9c1918bdb9c8.cardinals_pirates_baseball_padw102.jpg

I’ve been in and out of the loop lately — crazy things going on in Omaha, you know — so forgive me if this has been remarked upon previously. But I checked the calendar yesterday, and it said Friday. Then I saw this picture of Zach Duke, and it said “Friday” in the caption. But wait! That can’t be right — the Pirates usually look like hell on Fridays!

Lo, behold, and holy crap — I believe this is the second home Friday in a row without the red vests. I don’t know, maybe there’s a ketchup (or catsup, if you prefer) shortage in Pittsburgh and the Bucs are doing their part in spreading awareness. Or maybe somebody in the front office finally said, “You know, those really look bad. We should probably stop wearing them.”

On second thought, that’d be giving too much credit to anybody in that front office. It’s probably the ketchup thing. — Bryan

First time I can remember seeing a cycling NOB. But maybe I’m just a NOB NOOB. (Try saying THAT 20 times fast!)

    link

I hope the bucs front office finally came to their senses. First step, get rid of ugly red vests; second step, figure out how to evaluate, manage, and keep talent; third step, win.

Maybe this is the beginning of great things or at least a .500 season in my lifetime.

Thank God almighty they got rid or those wretched things. Now they need to go back to just black and yellow as their primary colors.

Pirates should lose the pinstriped alts, too. Pinstripes are fine, but not on the Pirates. Just not their tradition.

Maybe someone knows the answer, but I was thinking since Carlos Zambrano is probably going to start the ASG, are road teams allowed to wear the alt jerseys in the game? (Since Z always has the Cubs wear their blue alts when he starts). I know the A’s wore every combination they had for the ASG years ago, but has that rule changed (and now the visitors HAVE to wear road grays)?

    thanks in advance.

Am I being too picky to now ask that their black undershirts be … oh, I dunno … black?

And, since we’re on the subject of turning a franchise around, anyone look at the standings this morning?

I for one like the pinstripes. They should drop the red vest in favor of a black vest though.

Good point. They’ve never worn pinstripes before. Why start now?

Oh, I know the Pirates HAVE worn pinstripes, and the bumblebee one were kinda funky and all. What I meant was, there are lot of teams that have dabbled with pins, but haven’t exactly become synonymous with them. When I think pins, I think Yankees, Cubs, Twins, White Sox, Phillies, Mets (hey, they still look best in pins)–even DiamondBacks and Rockies–and a few others. Don’t mean teams that ALWAYS wear them, but that have more times than not in the past 50 years or so.

The opposite would be teams like the Cardinals, Angels and Giants, for example. Sure they HAVE worn pins, but we’d certainly never say pins were exactly their longstanding or traditional style.

That’s what I meant about the Pirates.

I saw something this morning in the link that made me think I was about to see another star-spangled cap P.R. fiasco. Kurt Warner (still involved in St. Louis, despite being jettisoned to the dessert) is in town signing autographs to raise money for Midwest flooding efforts. My eyebrows raised when I saw this:

All proceeds go to the Midwest Flood Relief Fund, set up by Warner’s First Things First Foundation.

Here we go again, right? Then came this:

“One hundred percent of the money we collect will go to flood relief,” he said. “What we’ll do is look at some individual cases where we can provide the most assistance.”

Would that be so hard for someone from MLB to say? Or would the empty pocketbooks of cash-strapped MLB owners not allow them to do so?

Are sleeves too much to ask for too? I haven’t talked to a single person who thinks that sleeveless is the better alternative.

Last night I saw the last part of the 1951 movie link. One big uni-botch: in the climactic final game (where the Pirates and Giants both looked great for the most part), the pitcher has one stirrup on correctly and the other one on backwards!

    1991 Giants throwback game.
Interesting approach…unis were styled right, but where done in current colors of orange and black, instead of the red and navy of 1925.

    link

Anyone know if any other teams have done that? Can you imagine this uni in forest and gold, for example?

I’m just going to say the red Pirates alternates look much, much better in person than they do on TV.

    Well I would HOPE SO!

    :)

The Pirates need to cut the crap already. Drop SLEEVELESS altogether and adopt an actual VEST like this…
    link
the striped socks would be ideal too.

As for an Alternate just got with a simple SHORT SLEEVE black jersey, Yellow text & numbers with white trim and two thin yellow & white stripes about an inch from the edge of the sleeve. Similar to the jersey on the far right…

Was making ref. to post #17 about “adjusted” throwbacks.

I do like the white so much better. I will say, however, they need to have a single-tone undershirt. The black/grey thing doesn’t look quite right. Just black would be fine.

Also- playing in a vest, w/ a dri-fit style undershit is EXTREMELY comfortable, especially in the summer.

While searching for something else, I stumbled upon yet another blogger designing his own hockey logos, with less than stellar results however:

Let me be the first to say I like the sleeveless look. They switched to that look when PNC Park opened as a nod to the 1960 World Series champs. Sure the combination of a 21st century uniform cut and the standard Nike undershirts that typically don’t match well fails to make an authentic 1960’s look, but I still generally like them.

I second that motion. Plus, think of what the uniforms would look like if they WERE cut as they were in the 1960s. Today steroid affected … er … um … more “workout concious” players would look like that 300 pound guy in a Bulls jersey in the stands of the United Center.

But if we go by replacing one color with another (forest for navy, gold for red), lettering and numbers would be gold edged in forest…little stuff like that would be interestingly different from current A’s, and vastly different from ’56 unis, which was the real point anyway. Mostly, though (in deference to our Flounder), I was thinking about the stirrups, bloused pants, black shoes, etc. LOL.

The core question still is about the Giants taking a vintage uni in a different color scheme and updating it in the team’s current colors…and wondering if anyone knew if any other teams had done such a thing for a TBTC.

Considering that, so far, there are no answers, then maybe the Giants are the only ones.

Caught a little World Team Tennis on TV last night. Philadelphia vs. Delaware. Apparently on tape from a couple of nights ago.

WTT teams have NOB, which does look way out of place on a tennis outfit.

And one of the unis was a little too tight for one of the women’s doubles players. She should have gone for a little baggier look given her…uh…shape.

Those of you who watched the 1952 world series film might have noticed that it was narrated by Lew Fonseca. That name was familiar to me, but I couldn’t remember why. Here’s the link I found. Short version. Fascinating life. Good major leaguer; probably would have been MVP in 1929. Injuries shortened his career. Managed a bit, and was the first to use film study as a tool. After being fired as a manager, he went to the league presidents with the idea of setting up a motion picture bureau. Highlight films and news reels were produced starting in 1934 until 1967 (after which MLB’s focus shifted to television). It’s largely because of Fonseca that we any film at all from those early years. Among other things, Fonseca was behind the film that caught Jackie Robinson stealing home (in 1955). Fonseca also was behind the motorcycle gimmick that resulted in the conclusion that Bob Feller’s fastball traveled 104 mph.

I wonder why this look never caught on:

Probably because wasn’t orange and black.

Back in the 70s when I was editing a weekly pub about one of the NFL teams, there was a news n’ notes section way in the back of the pub. It was stuff gathered mostly from the UPI sportswire. One week the lead item was the Bears’ team doctor explaining they had successfully amputated the left testicle of Bears DB Virgil Livers after a game injury. So, being a smartass, I wrote a headline that said, “Chicago Doctor Gets Game Ball”.

No one every said a word about it. No readers, not even the owners of the paper. That’s when I realized NOBODY was reading the damned thing.

Somewhat off topic, but if anyone’s interested in getting an Expos game worn uniform, they’re selling them at the All Star Fan Fest at the Javitz Center in NYC.

They’re the pinstripe home whites with Expos in script. I saw a Graeme Lloyd one and was hunting for a Hideki Irabu one as well, but when I saw it buried at the bottom, some guy grabbed it from me and offered the guy $20 more than he was asking for it.

You’re right, they aren’t throwbacks. They’re evocative, and they make a nice set of alternates, especially compared to, oh, say, red vests for the Pirates.

(And now we’re back where we started today).

Watching a Giants/Padres game from Sept. 28, 1987 on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. From the Murph, Pads in white with Brown pinstripes. Giants in classic grays with the rounded SF on the left chest and Wide piping on the legs. And everyone is in stirrups! Why would Zambrano start the ASG over Brandon Webb, who has 3 more wins and 28 more Ks than Zambrano does. Or Volquez, who has 1 more win, 38 more Ks and a lower ERA than Zambrano does?

    Wishful thinking on your part?
Because both Webb and Volquez start on Sunday and wouldnt be able to start on Tuesday.
Volquez started Tonight and gave up 1 run in 7 innings. Anyhow, Ryan Dempster has a better shot to start the game than Zambrano in my opinion.
Not gonna happen, Dempster starts on Sunday

Rotation usually trumps merit in these situations.

Dempster starts today. Webb starts today. Volquez pitched yesterday.

It’s not necessarily merit-based. It’s merit-based but also takes into account when a guy last threw and when he’s supposed to throw next.

    I can’t believe you don’t know that.

I 100% agree, the sleveless on the Pirates uniforms looks great, certainly in person. The pinstripes look pretty good too, and since they are only on Home Sundays, I can live with them.
