The Real First Day of Spring

opening day.jpg

Internal alarm reminding me it’s time to take care of my taxes already? Check. Mark Prior on the DL? Double-check. This can only mean one thing: the start of the baseball season. Herewith, some observations from yesterday’s Opening Day action:

• I’m genuinely surprised — and disappointed — by how many teams chose to wear dark alternate jerseys on Opening Day. Among the offenders: the Brewers, White Sox, and Astros.

• The Indians didn’t wear a solid-colored jersey, but they did open the season in their new cream-colored retro-ish alts. I think they look awesome (well, on most players), but I still think a team should wear its standard uni on Opening Day (esp. since this alt isn’t a throwback — the Indians have never worn this design before, so it’s not like they’re using it to honor their history or anything like that). Also: Since the alt uni has its own alt cap, couldn’t they also have shelled out for alt batting helmets? Apparently not.

• Lots of cold-weather fun in Chicago during yesterday’s game. And damn, that’s a nice uniform set!

• My favorite detail of the day: If you have to wear a helmet, why not wear a fun helmet? That’s Twins first base coach Jerry White wearing the team’s 1970s design, just like the Minnesota catchers have been wearing in recent years. I’m told that the third base coach wore the same thing. (Big thanks to Michael Romero for the screen grab.)

• The Reds all wore Joe Nuxhall jerseys during yestrday’s pregame ceremonies (credit Scott Yager with that screen shot) — that’s really nice. Then they all took them off and switched to their regular jerseys, except for starter Aaron Harang, who kept wearing the Nuxy tribute during the game (plus that photo shows him drawing a little “41” on the mound dirt). Harang apparently got permission from MLB central to do this, but I’m not down with it. It becomes more of a “Look at me!” thing, instead of a respectful tribute thing (like the one everyone else was already wearing). Also, the Reds already have a player who wears No. 41, Jeremy Affeldt; Harang normally wears No. 39. Anyone know if Affeldt wore his regular jersey while sitting in the bullpen, or if he switched numbers for the day to allow Harang to wear 41? (Meanwhile: Who’s that at lower-left with the mohawk?)

• Slowly but surely, the Royals are getting there. First, they’ve switched from nameplates to direct-sewn lettering (which should make this guy‘s jersey a lot more comfortable). And their left-sleeve logo patch, which had previously been on a white background (which sometimes extended way beyond the patch’s outlines), now sits flush against the sleeve (additional views here and here). Both of these are small but telling indicators of a team that’s no longer cutting corners and is willing to take those extra steps to make things look right. (Kudos to Larry Wiederecht, who spotted both of these details.)

• As promised, a bunch of 1958 Dodgers old-timers wore off-white throwbacks, prepared for the occasion by Ebbets Field Flannels (additional views here, and here). Too bad about the NOBs, but I understand that they wanted everyone to be able to identify the players.

•  Dodgers rookie Blake DeWitt wore No. 62 in spring training. But when he made it past the final roster cut, they gave him a more suitable number — except on his helmet (good catch by Ian Voorn).

• Good view here of the Cool Base road grays (thanks to Bryan for the hi-res image).

• Nice to see Kenji Johjima’s still wearing his little helmet doohickey thingie.

True to his word. Too bad he can’t pitch for shit anymore.

• I already covered Willie Harris’s double-flappage yesterday. But photos as good as this one don’t come around very often.

• Genius catch by Michael Zakrzewski, who notes that the I on Matt Chico’s jersey was upside-down (look at the other letters — the gold bevel should be on the left side, not the right).

• MLB.TV is messed up, so I can’t access most of the day’s game video or make screen grabs, but I have it on good authority (read: several posts in yesterday’s comments section) that Eric Gagné’s jersey came so far untucked yesterday that the umpires actually ordered him to tuck it back in. No word on whether they also ordered him to give back two months’ salary to the Red Sox after the way he pitched last August and September.

• What’s worse than an annoying corporate ad slogan that tries to turn baseball into a lifestyle brand? An annoying corporate ad slogan with one word missing.

• Not uni-related, but several teams appear to have done these elaborate intro ceremonies where the players practically came in on a red carpet. Is this a new thing, or have I just not noticed in the past? Here in New York, our teams usually just walk out of the dugout, stand along the baselines, and tip their caps as the P.A. guy announces their names, y’know?

This is the mayor of Philadelphia. I’m just gonna leave it at that. Draw your own conclusions.

And hey, have I mentioned that the Mets are undefeated?

Uni Watch News Ticker: A little birdie tells me that the Yankees will go to NOBs next season, to coincide with the opening of the new stadium and to make the point that Hank and Hal are running the team now. ”¦ I couldn’t really tell ya myself, but Nicholas Bean says that this is actually Justin Timberlake, shooting a scene for his upcoming movie, On the Road. “Timberlake’s character, a Corpus Christi Hooks player named Carlton Garrett, was wearing the home whites, complete with ‘Garrett’ nameplate, but the other Hooks did not have nameplates,” writes Nicholas. “Oh, and Timberlake runs like a girl. Seriously.” ”¦ Interesting piece here about the rebranding of a high school sports program. ”¦ “The Red Wings celebrated Gordie Howe’s 80th birthday on Sunday with a pregame ceremony,” writes Scott Alexander. “They gave him a framed No. 17 jersey, which he wore his rookie season before switching to No. 9.” Nice touch, except his rookie version didn’t have NOB lettering or CCM logos. ”¦ Speaking of CCM, sort of, here’s a note from John Muir: “Anaheim Ducks back-up goalie Jonas Hiller has been wearing the old Koho 580 pads since his debut last season. But his pads have either had the Koho logo blacked in or been unbranded, because Koho no longer exists as a company (it was in the CCM family, since bought by Reebok). But according to this December ’07 thread from GoalieStore.com, Hiller, GoalieMonkey.com, and Koho recently signed a deal for a limited production run of their new 700-series, which will look like this and this. Not sure what it will amount to, but I was surprised to see Koho as an independent entity again.” ”¦ The NFL Network was showing Super Bowl XXII yesterday morning, and Jesse Alger noticed something unusual: a post-game interview featuring John Elway wearing a bathrobe with a Super Bowl logo. ”¦ Interesting skiing attire here (with thanks to Matt Englander). ”¦ “Was re-watching the 2004 World Series video yesterday and noticed something very strange,” writes Alan Chewning. “They were showing an old clip of the Cardinals’ 1967 WS post-game field celebration and as everyone is converging on the infield, one of the umpires runs up to one of the players and takes the cap off his head and keeps on running. And he already had someone else’s in his hand! Early eBayer? Memorabilia maven? Thief? What’s up with that?” Actually, this story sounds oddly familiar to me — did we discuss it once before? If anyone knows more, please fill us in. ”¦ Remember that pig butchery course I mentioned I’d be taking last week? Look, there I am in the front row. Additional pics, not recommended for vegetarians, here. ”¦ Yesterday I linked to this photo, which appears to show a catcher wearing either a front-facing helmet or a brimless helmet in 1969, which would mark the earliest instance of either of those phenomena, at least in my experience. Paul Hirsch to the rescue: “The catcher there is Tom Haller, who was the first catcher to wear a helmet behind the plate. While with the Giants in 1967 or so, Haller saw John Roseboro get hit on a backswing in a game at Candlestick and started wearing a sawed-off brimless helmet shortly thereafter. I grew up in L.A., and Vin Scully made a big deal of this, much like he made a big deal about coaches wearing helmets before the Coolbaugh incident last season.” ”¦ As a semi-serious bowler (170 average, keep my ball and shoes in the trunk of my car so I can bowl at a moment’s notice, etc.), I was pretty disturbed to see this. ”¦ While looking for pics of goateed umpires, I came across this shot of Ken Kaiser. Although he’s wearing the 1997 Jackie Robinson patch, the photo is actually from spring training 1998 — interesting. Also, note the logo creep on his pants! ”¦ Okay, if you want to say, “Uniform? What uniform?!,” in this case I’ll allow it. ”¦ Michael Kemezis has started a new hockey sweater blog. … Longtime Kentucky basketball equipment manager Bill Keightley, who worked in the UK equipment room since 1962, passed away last night. “Words can’t really express what he meant to the Kentucky program and its coaches, players, and fans,” writes Micah Roberts. “I will always remember his stubborn refusal to allow U.S. flag patches on UK’s uniforms except in times of war. Mr. Keightley was a former Marine and he felt that using the flag as a common decoration on a uniform was wholly inappropriate. Not only have I lost a member of my UK family, I feel like I have lost one of the folks who loved the uniforms as much as I did.” There are some good anecdotes about Keightley here, and there’s a video clip available here.

The Brewers and Astros have pretty much shelved their grey road jerseys. The Astros wore the red almost 100% last year, and the Brewers started wearing the alt after the break.

Im guessing if you keep track this year, the alt will be worn 80-90 percent of the road games for these two teams.

My wife’s first comment when she saw our illustrious mayor throwing out the first pitch?

    “Why’s he wearing mom jeans?”

A little birdie tells me that the Yankees will go to NOBs next season, to coincide with the opening of the new stadium and to make the point that Hank and Hal are running the team now.

    Nice April Fool’s joke Paul!!!

Lol @ Mayor Nutter, with the jersey tucked in, but hey hes better than our last mayor (and hes only been mayor for a few months!) so I cant make fun too much.

The Dodgers off-whites are spectacular. And I love Torre wearing a watch on his glove hand.

Bobby Richardosn claimed that the 2nd base umpire took his cap immediately after he caught the Willie McCovey liner to end the 1962 Series.

Waking this morning to the news that Bill Keightley had passed away was difficult for me. I grew up in Lexington, worshipped the Cats as a child, and went to UK. Back in 2004 when the Cats played in the regionals here in Austin I got tickets. I went to the ‘practice’ session the day before the games. I got Tubby Smith’s autograph. But, I was equally excited to see Mr. Keightley. He was a special part of Kentucky basketball and will be greatly missed. He deserves a tribute that is as special as he was.

The player’s hat was Julian Javier and the ump was the second base ump. I remember reading somewhere that before the last out the ump told Javier that he was going to take his hat. I believe in the video, you can see Javier turn and smile at the ump.

And why does he have a glove?

The tribe new unis are so spectacular. I love the color, and do not mind their political correctness. I hope this is the wave of the future, rather than the terrible I logo.

And why does he have his shirt tucked into his jeans. You don’t tuck things into jeans. Sticker still on the hat. There’s just so many things wrong with that picture. That’s the guy that’s making decisions for the entire city of Philadelphia?

As an Astros fan, I don’t know which continuing tradition was worse last night: the stranded baserunners or the red softball jerseys. Drayton McLane apparently loves those things. I despise them.

In reality, the only decent thing about the Astros’ unis is the cap. (I still don’t understand that middle “s” design in Houston and Astros on the jerseys.) I say ditch the whole thing and go back to the shooting star design they used just before switching to the rainbow-gut unis.

NHL Net last night (in honor of Gordie’s 80th) showed the highlight film from the ’52 & ’54 Stanley Cup finals. Uni-related (sorry, no screen caps): home teams (Wings & Habs) wore white sweaters – not dark as I would have expected; refs wore what looked like off-white V-neck sweaters with white shirt & black ties, and black pants (sharp!); Canadiens home jerseys had no consistent number patterns; and, of course, goalies were mask-less.

Very interesting to watch, especially when compared to all of the modern NHL ads (with unis) shown during the commercial breaks.
link Too bad he can’t pitch for shit anymore.
too bad he also can’t figure out the proper way to wear his stirrups…im SOOOOO glad the mets didn’t sign him…and for those of you keeping score at home: johan 1-0; barry 0-1

there was NO NEED for NOBs…if you wanted to ID the players (and didn’t ALREADY know, for example, who roger, and carl, and newk, and piggy were, and meant to brooklyn)…buy a program

In addition, Harang’s Nuxhall jersey was missing both patches (link, link). I don’t think there was a Nuxy patch on the memorial jerseys, but there was a Mr. Red on the left arm (can’t link … it’s causing problems, but look at the picture in the article asking for the name of the mohawk-wearer).

sorry about the quote thingy…and yes i KNOW 1957 was the last year in brooklyn and 1958 was the inaugural season in LA

I liked Harang’s donning of Joe Nuxhall’s number for the whole game. It may seem a bit overdone to outsiders, but Nuxhall meant a lot to the Cincinnati Reds and its fans. Maybe he and Harang became good friends. Whatever the reason, I don’t think it was bush league at all, but rather a tasteful tribute that non-Reds fans don’t quite get.

Not sure if this has been covered, but the Reds wore link, which I hope they continue through the season.
The Yankee NOB thing better be an April Fools joke.
Last year, Our Faithful Narrator got April Fooled when somebody reported “new” home alts for the Yankees: white without pinstripes and the retired numbers on the pants where side piping might go.
Sorry, Mr. Lukas, you’re not fooling us!

Slowly but surely, the Royals are getting there. First, they’ve switched from nameplates to direct-sewn lettering

Why is this better…I have gone into detail before about why I think nameplates are better, but never heard a qualified response from anyone as to why they think direct sewn is better????

I generally hate the Indians (being a White Sox fan), but I like their new alts. Somebody should tell the White Sox radio team that they aren’t 1954 throwbacks, though, since they kept saying all game they were.

I was gonna say..if that’s not an April Fool’s Joke..all those shitty replicas with NOBs are gonna be accurate now..

Well..except for the fact that 98% of them say Soriano on them..

I don’t know anybody else, but I think nameplates just look stupid. It’s just an unnecessary element and makes the uniform look less professional. I think it looks especially awful on the Twins road pinstriped uniforms.

I think nameplates look like shit. Extra seams, extra fabric, extra puckering. What if the insignia on the front was actually a big piece of fabric with a script design on it — wouldn’t THAT look like shit? Damn right. So do nameplates.

Also yesterday O’s first base coach John “T-Bone” Shelby’s “8” was upside-down on the front of his jersey…no pics. First base coaches don’t get much photo love.

i don’t know if it’s better, but it is most surely more aesthetically pleasing…the only time (imho) nameplates look even ok … which they don’t … is when they are done link…purposely offset so the NOB is the same color as the jersey color

Seriously? They referred to them as a 1954 design?! That’s link.

The Cincy newspaper reported Harang did not request to wear the Nuxy jersey during the game. Someone with the team asked him if he would like to do so, and he agreed. So to the extent that there is a “Look at me” factor at work, Harang is not to blame.

And just because it made me a little crazy:

Every time I see a Reds player (or players, in yesterday’s case) wearing No. 41, I think of Tom Seaver.

It may look cleaner to have a direct sewn name, but the nameplate ensures a proper arch to the name. Now most teams that use direct sewing have the surnames in practically a straight line. Only when it’s a longer name does it start to resemble a proper radial arch.

And they don’t pucker if done right, but nobody can seem to do that today.

NFL tells Super Bowl volunteers to link so no more stories about the good experience on uniwatch I presume.

The real issue with the Reds is, is Affeldt still going to wear number 41, since the Reds did RETIRE it yesterday.

It will be just like when MLB retired Jackie Robinson’s number. Mo Vaughn, Mariano Rivera, and a few others were still allowed to wear #42 untill they retired. The only one left now is Rivera and he doesn’t have much left.

Affeldt can wear it until he leaves the team.

Didn’t Biggio insist on the Astros wearing their road grays a lot at the beginning of the 2007 season? With Biggio retired, I guess the only time the complete gray Astros jersey might be seen is at the All-Star Game.

Harang was asked to wear Nuxy’s jersey for the game so it could be auctioned off, with proceeds going to Nuxhall’s community fund or Hall of Fame fund or something like that. It had good intentions.

“The Reds also unfurled a Nuxhall jersey hanging above the visitors’ bullpen that will remain there for the duration of the season. The Reds also announced that Great American Ball Park’s address will officially be changed this summer to 100 Nuxhall Way.”

Harang usually wears #39. What is ironic is that Nuxhall also wore #39 during either his first or second stint with the Reds.

    Thanks Justin Timberlake.
I went to Corpus over the weekend to visit my brother-in-law. The baseball field is next to the bridge on the way out of town. They shut down the bridge so they could get some helicopter shot. Took us forever leave.

The reds just placed Nuxhall’s #41 on the wall for a year on a jersey he never wore. Not retired. Oh by the way, they retired Davey Concepcion’s #13 and no mention of it on the website either. Not sure if it’s at the ballpark?

They did. I’m positive of it, because it started them talking about how the Indians had 111 wins that season and the Yankees had 103. Ed Farmer, the play-by-play guy, tends to be pretty clueless, but I expected better from new parter Steve Stone.

On another semi-unirelated note, they were discussing people who were hit in the head with balls. Steve Stone said the worst he ever saw was Sammy Sosa a few years ago (when his helmet shattered), and then brought up “Ben Chapman”, who he said died after being hit with a ball. Farmer had never heard of that. Maybe because his name was actually “Ray Chapman”.

I thought people loved the Civil Rights Game unis last year. I think the difference this year is that MLB stopped short in the Civil Rights Game. Last year, there was a whole new uni for the teams, complete with new pants and caps. That was missing from this years game. Teams wore their hats and the White Sox wore their road gray pants.

Maybe if MLB took some uni hints from the Negro League teams in the area the MLB team is from…

The Indians unis are a nice interpretation of the 50’s era unis, especially the caps.

    Yes. Don’t mess with tradition.
You want an update? We wear white at home. No longer oatmeal off-white, and definitely not contrasting beer league tops. White at home. I could live with taking the stripe jobs off of the road tops’ sleeve cuffs. Not crazy about those. But the rest of the white on the grays needs to stay, lest we look too much like the vintage Red Sox on the road.

I bought the Indians alternate cap when it was first revealed months ago and I get more compliments on it than any of my other caps. The simple retro look is a good one.

Hiller actually has the koho logos blacked in right now because Koho has not payed him to wear the pads. Companies will pay goalies around $40,000 to wear their stuff and Hiller has recieved no money from Koho. His response? Blacking in all of the logos. For a short while this season his pads did indeed have the koho branding.

And with that said, whether it’s an AFD joke or not, is the Red Wings annoucement really that big a deal? While I’m not a fan of “billboarding” an athlete, I understand that manufacturers want to put their logo on the product they produce. I work in retail. If my company makes and sells something, you can BET it will have the company name on it! I think it hits a whole new level when a player will black out a logo because they aren’t specifically being paid to wear that logo. At that point, they ARE selling advertising space on uniforms.

I’m an Arsenal fan but I wondered the same thing. Paul must have made the comment because (1) he’s not that familiar with Spurs (or soccer, for that matter) and (2) especially with the long sleeves, there’s a LOT of plain white there and not much in the way of trim color or insignias. Sometimes Spurs wear navy shorts, and in past years they’ve sometimes had more navy trim on the shirts, or even navy sleeves, but this year not so much.

I don’t think the confusion comes from Dwight Gooden wearing a black Astros jersey. I think the question is, why is Dwight Gooden on the All Star Rookie team in 2000? I can only assume they were honoring former All Star Rookies.

I don’t know how I feel about the re-introduction of those white paneled Twins helmets. Last year their catchers wore them and I was amused.

They are not good looking. But they are a sweet nod to (a less than memorable era in) the Twins history–which I appreciate. The Twins just jumped on the front panel bandwagon when they were introduced in the mid-’70’s. Hmmmm…

I guess they win my approval for showing up unexpectantly. And because they’re being worn by base coaches. It’s all kind of strange…and I love strange, unexpected occurrences in a sports world where originality is being squeezed out little by little.

Very weak on analysis, incapable of offering anything resembling a critique of a player or situation. Yes, he had some charming catch phrases, but that was in large part because he had a very limited descriptive vocabulary and had to keep resorting to the same verbiage again and again.

Wrong Kiner malapropism. It was Rich Folkers who was “throwing up in the bullpen.” Randy Jones was referred to as “the pitcher with the Karl Marx hairdo” (he meant to say Harpo Marx).

Ralph also famously referred to Gary Carter as Gary Cooper, Mother’s Day as Father’s Day (or maybe the other way around — I forget), and himself as Ralph Korner (yes, really).

Very weak on analysis, incapable of offering anything resembling a critique of a player or situation. Yes, he had some charming catch phrases, but that was in large part because he had a very limited descriptive vocabulary and had to keep resorting to the same verbiage again and again.

Kiner used to butcher the english language. My favorite being during a Mets Padres game “Randy Jones is throwing up in the bullpen”.

Despite all of this, and much more, he was a much sharper baseball analyst than Murph.
Well we’ll have to disagree between Murph and Ralph. But Micheal Kay and John Sterling? They’re awful. And the combination of Waldman and Sterling is maybe the worst in the history of baseball.

Every so often he does an inning or two with the guys (link, link, and link) in the link. Everytime he’s there it breaks by heart. I used to love listening to him and watching link when I was a kid. Yes. Don’t mess with tradition.

I think nameplates look like shit. Extra seams, extra fabric, extra puckering. What if the insignia on the front was actually a big piece of fabric with a script design on it — wouldn’t THAT look like shit? Damn right. So do nameplates.

Red wings have arched names and it’s directly sewn onto the jersey.
Correct, but they are Vertical arched, not Radial. Vertical arching by it’s nature ensures a proper arch…it’s the Radial that the nameplate assists with.

My apologies…for I am the accused poster. I was searching the web for the a cap version of the base coach helmets and I happened upon those wretched creations. I felt it my civic duty to warn the uni-watching public of their dangers.

In the future, I will think twice before sharing such information because it is not a revelation discovering homely hats designed by New Era but fate, such as the rising of the sun, Marty Met decrying the ugliness of the Yankees, Penn State or Alabama, and Phil with his love of the Mets and sarcasm!

The extra hardware on the catcher’s helmet is to stop the mask from sliding around on the helmet, particularly forward on the helmet. It keeps the mask more secure on the helmet.

Does it make me a bad person if I like the link. I realize pairing it with the Packers only pants, gold(mustard yellow) as well, would be puke worthy. So I’m not necessarily suggesting any uniform change, just that I like the replica(even though since there’s no real authentic for it to replicate)

Now you’re just nitpicking Phil. I’m just thrilled that this post went up. I’ve had the spam monster eating my stuff up for the last few weeks. Luckily Paul is pretty quick getting it fixed.

    As for broadcasting greats:

My first televised baseball recollections were from the mid to late 80’s when NBC was broadcasting their “Game of the Week”. Vin Scully and Joe Garagiola taught me the game better than anybody could have.

That is why a kid from the New York suburbs was so in love with the Cubs of Dawson, Sandberg, and Jerome Walton with his ridiculous open stance as well as the Red Sox with Dewey, Rich Gedman, Mike Greenwell, Boggs, and the Rocket.

Waldman and Sterling are AWFUL, I agree. I loved Bobby Murcer and Rizzuto, wishing everyone in the tri-state area a happy birthday and letting slip how many “bucas he had prior to the game!

Caray was priceless but I love Joe Morgan as an analyst. He is an OUTSTANDING teacher of the game.

    From the ticker:

GoalieMonkey.com, and Koho recently signed a deal for a limited production run of their new 700-series, which will look like this and this. Not sure what it will amount to, but I was surprised to see Koho as an independent entity again.

The 700’s, along with a “semi-pro” 680, appear to be available:

I was having a conversation with my father in law the other day about Joe Morgan and we both feel that it’s very simple. If we disagreed with his analysis or opinions it would be one thing. But this is a man that talks for 9 innings and gets FACTS wrong.

During the Civil Rights game he called the Mets 3rd starter link (should be link). Last year when the Mets were playing the Cubs he stated that Luis Castillo (a new acquisition) would have a tough time that night since he played he entire career in the American League.

Slowly but surely, the Royals are getting there. First, they’ve switched from nameplates to direct-sewn lettering

Why is this better…I have gone into detail before about why I think nameplates are better, but never heard a qualified response from anyone as to why they think direct sewn is better????
I think nameplates look like shit. Extra seams, extra fabric, extra puckering. What if the insignia on the front was actually a big piece of fabric with a script design on it — wouldn’t THAT look like shit? Damn right. So do nameplates.

You are both right (how’s that for riding the fence). Direct sew looks better, but the arch on most of them is too straight. However, nameplates are not the solution. There are templates used (Liebe has them, for example) when positioning lettering for application. Apparently someone believes the arch is adequate the way it is, I disagree.

Just because much of this is on the on-field jerseys, doesn’t make it correct. The Royals switched from Wilson to Rawlings in 1987 and the letter placement on the front has been an absolute mess ever since, right up to this year’s spring training tops. The same, IMO, goes for name placement on the backs of many team’s jerseys.

Also. The Royals patch looks so much better on the sleeve without the white border.
Let’s take it a step further, how good would the O’s coaches look in link? Seriously, could this open up some, dare I suggest, marketing possibilities? You have predominantly “old school” guys wearing throwback designs (where applicable) just for the coaches.

shannon stewart on the jays is wearing a number 4 helmet and a number 23 jersey.

Morgan is a symptom of a bigger disease. Like so many color men today, he’s supposed to be an analyst, but he thinks he’s a critic. He treats the entire game as an excuse to critique everyone’s performance (very different than explaining or illuminating those performances, which is what his job is supposed to be). He consequently spends the whole game sounding like a coach lecturing a bunch of Little Leaguers.

This would be annoying enough if he did it effectively, but he doesn’t. As noted above, he makes many, many factual errors; he has an incredibly limited analytical vocabulary; he somehow thinks describing a slo-mo replay counts as “analysis,” when in fact it’s just really, really boring (are you listening, Keith Hernandez?); he often says the replay validates what he had said during the play when in fact it often CONTRADICTS what he said; he starts lots of sentences with “Again…,” even though he’s not repeating himself (this is a lose-lose proposition — if he WAS repeating himself, that would be bad in itself, so at least he’s not doing that, but why keep saying, “Again…”?); and so on.

To my mind, there are only two good things about Morgan: (1) He sometimes offers a useful historical perspective, which I respect and appreciate; and (2) he’s utterly unaware that Jon Miller is essentially making fun of him for most of their games, so he makes a great straight man. Miller plays Morgan like a violin and Morgan has no fucking clue. Go back to sleep, Joe.

The primary virus carrying this disease is, of course, Tim McCarver (a man who actually once said in an interview, “I’m not an analyst — I’m a critic”). Morgan, Hernandez, and all the other assholes making fools of themselves in the booth these days are directly traceable to Mr. McBlowhard. Sigh….

You raise good points, but in a way you also prove my point. Since you are “unfamiliar with the substitution rules” of the NL, if he were to give you the wrong information, you would accept it as fact and never know the difference.

Based on the misinformation he has given in the past, I can’t accept what he says as fact and that ruins the complete broadcast for me. I can’t appreciate (or trust) anything he says.

One final thought re: Morgan (and it has nothing to do with his work as a broadcaster — it’s just a fun story):

A few yrs back, a friend of mine was getting married, and he wanted a new suit for the occasion. So he went to Moe Ginsburg (now-defunct menswear shop in Manhattan) and began looking thru the racks. He picked out a suit, put it on, and then came out of the fitting room to see how he looked in the mirror. And who should he see a few feet away but Joe Morgan, who was apparently doing a bit of shopping of his own.

“Hey Joe,” said my friend, turning toward Morgan and holding out his arms in a “look at my new suit” gesture. “What do you think?”

To which Joe Morgan replied, “It’s OK — for you.” And then he turned away.

I don’t think this makes Joe Morgan an asshole (I dislike his broadcasting work on its own terms). In fact, I think this is a really funny story. And so does my friend who told it to me.

    1) Your site only lists 20 NHL uniforms. The last time I checked, there were 30 NHL teams. You can hardly be the “definitive source” when you’re missing 10 NHL teams, and all you do is offer your opinion.

    2) You linked all the pictures back to other people’s sites. All you’ve done is stolen someone else’s work and made it your own. And if one of those sites were mine, I’d be especially pissed at this part: “©2008 Please be respectful in taking materials from hockeysweaters.com”. None of it is yours except your own opinions. The least you could do is pilfer the pictures and host them yourself!

    3) Your information is sketchy at best. The Coyotes don’t have an alternate logo. That patch is the secondary logo. Huge difference.

    4) You need to do your research. The Nashville Predators had the word “Nashville” on their alternate jerseys last season. Both Dallas and Nashville have their city names on their jerseys this season, thus making Vancouver wordmark not unique. In fact, the Canucks weren’t even the first team to show off their wordmark this past offseason.

    5) Your information regarding the LA Kings contradicts yourself. If you look at the picture you stole from link for the Kings jersey last season, you can clearly see the wordmark on the hemstripe. Yet you write in the “Bonus” section of this year’s jerseys, “For having the gumption to put the waist wordmark on- never before done, I think”. Again, do your research, and try reading what you write.

    6) Your write-up regarding the Detroit Red Wings is interesting, especially since Steve Yzerman retired before the Wings ever wore an Rbk jersey, yet you used his photo in a CCM jersey to speak of the contrast. Since that time, the captaincy lettering has switched shoulders. Again, you may want to keep the examples current with the jersey you are critiquing.

    6) For the love of all things good, stop using the comment section for your self-promotions. Send the link to Paul, or link it to your name. (Sorry, but this is a giant pet peeve of mine.)

I apologize to Paul, and everyone else, for this, but this has been happening for the last three days for sure, and the number of glaring errors on that site began to seriously irritate me, especially when the author keeps telling people to visit his site.

“Hockey sweaters” or whatever your name is, please email me directly at cdnuniguy-at-gmail-dot-com if you’d like to take this to a private discussion.

Rant is over. Back to your regular programming.

It’s not so much that I like them for any one reason per se. It was during a time when hockey was becoming stale (1995 lockout), and the Islanders came back with something overly dramatic and different that basically shocked the entire sports world.

Do I think they are hideous? Hell yeah! But the fact that the Islanders were trying something so off-the-wall in terms of breaking hockey traditions was impressive, especially when you consider the Isles’ history.

It’s like the Turn Ahead The Clock jerseys in MLB. Ugly? Hell yeah! But all of would like to own that piece of history just because it was so different than what we were used to seeing.

To me, the Fishermen will always be part of hockey folklore. As for the reasons, so few people have a Fisherman jersey, and even fewer have them totally customized right down to the jersey patches. It’s very noticeable as well. :o)

Ok….I can understand that. Living on Long Island and having seen all the cups won at the Coliseum in person, I’ll tell you why you don’t see many people wearing them today; WE HATED THE CHANGE!!! It wasn’t so much that they changed the uniforms or modified the colors a bit (which on the link I very much liked). It was the fact that they changed the logo and as such were trying to change the identity and the history of the team.

We Islander fans may not have been thrilled with that years team but we are extremely proud of that link and what link. Changing that might as well been the same as moving the team off the Island.

Add to the fact that they were ugly as sin and you can see why there was a very strong negative reaction.

Of course, I’m probably not telling you something you don’t already know….link.

Being known for ugly uniforms is the same as being known as lovable losers…it only works when you never had nice uni’s or have won anything.

The Mets are the greatest lovable losers because of the way they started their franchise (with 120 loses) and they way they lost.

The Yankess has some pretty pathetic years but no one would confuse them with “lovable losers” because it’s not their history.

We couldn’t accept the “fishsticks” uni’s as “so ugly their beautiful” because of the great uni’s the preceded them.

I agree. While Mr. Powers may appreciate them for that reason, I simply find their freakishness to be something that makes them so unique rather than beautiful. They were hated so much that people wanted them burned at center ice. But I can guarantee you that someone asks me if they can buy it off me when I wear it.

Again, I appreciate the historical portion of the jersey. The fact that no one has one makes me appreciate the rarity of the jersey so much more.

Oregon’s “tennis ball” helmets or “lightning” yellow jerseys or even their blacked-out hoops unis were unique albeit not beautiful.

would you be speaking of, say, ‘motorin’ (sister christian) or some other godforesaken crap by night ranger, larry?

    please…do enlighten us ;)
Are you kidding, Night Ranger is on my ipod right now (except I don’t have one, but that’s what everybody says, right?). No, the first thing that came to mind was a certain group from Sweden with the alphabetically catchy name, you with me?
Absolutely not. Any possible connection outside my own car would be an admission of guilt. But as a 10-year-old Royals fan, I thought the song Waterloo (1974) was about KC’s Midwest League affiliate (that a true story).

Hey, it’s all about Osaka-san and his most famous creation, Astro Boy my friend. Used to watch him every weekday with Wee Willie Webber on Channel 17 here in Philly back in the day.

soon as i saw UW (#10), i knew i’d find gold…pure gold jerry

Ever since the Marlins have been a team, I’ve always been a Marlins fan. I was about 7 or 8 when they came into existence. For opening day, I was planning on wearing my (white pinstriped) Marlins jersey to school, as I do every year on opening day. When I got it out this year, I noticed that it had a fairly large and obvious spot on it, so I decided not to wear it. Being the baseball fan that I am, I had to wear something baseball for opening day, so I settled on my white Ben Sheets Milwaukee Brewers jersey. To make a long story short, I had my picture taken for the Northern Star (Northern Illinois University’s school paper) because I as watching the Brewers/Cubs game next to somebody in Cubs apparel. Sure enough, the picture made the paper. The caption had my name, year, major, and even proclaimed me a “Brewers fan!” D’oh!

Searched images only. My bad, yahoo.

Some good photos of both sleeve patches on the Yankees jerseys, link.
And how about those link, but the pleat down the sleeve creates a link which just looks stupid.
They did. I’m positive of it, because it started them talking about how the Indians had 111 wins that season and the Yankees had 103. Ed Farmer, the play-by-play guy, tends to be pretty clueless, but I expected better from new parter Steve Stone.
I heard it too, FWIW.

I was a little more amused by the fact that Stoney went on to say that the 111-win Indians were swept in the ’54 series by the “San Francisco Giants”…

for some reason Alex Rios was sporting a very similar mohawk and I remember the TV commentators talking about it in the season opener against the Yankees.

Just to clarify…The Indians alt uni’s most resemble the 1958-62 road uni’s but don’t have the same block font. So they’re really brand new…They just look retro. The caps most closely resemble the 1920’s font cap but not exactly.

The Orioles have been using the orange carpet for Opening Day for more than a decade now… I remember them doing it the last time they made the playoffs, which was more than a decade ago.
