USC Watch Day Two: The Vigil Continues

baze1

Jockey Michael Baze rode Georgie Boy to a win at the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park on Saturday. Yay — good for him, and the horse, too. But dig the silks: USC colors. Baze is based in Southern California, though it’s not clear if he actually goes to USC.

But if you were wondering if the silks are just a coincidence, check the back. No doubt there. But what is the significance? Anybody know anything about the ponies? My quick Google-type work didn’t find much, other than George Schwary owns the horse, and it’s his name on the back of Baze’s helmet. But what of the trojan?

So let’s get this figured out, huh? I’ll be on the couch eating Doritos and drinking Wild Cherry Pepsi. Let me know how it turns out. — Bryan

Holy crap! I am FIRST!! I never realised that shools had racing teams, but I guess that is pretty cool!

I think the “Fight On” silks are the registered colors and are based on the pre-2003 (?) uniforms the football team wore.

Thus the owner might be a Trojan fan/alum? (BTW the USC uniforms from that era were very nice.)

This PDF of the link lists George Schwary as a ’55 grad of U$C.

This article in the link was a dead end but kind of interesting regardless.

Wild cherry pepsi is the bomb… and is that cooler ranch Doritos or nacho cheese?
Yeah that’s all I got today.

I used to own a t-bred racehorse, so I know a little about this.

Owner I’m sure is a proud USC alum, this happens a lot in horse racing. Every owner gets to design their own, and many harken to their glorious college days…

One of the most famous examples of this is Robert and Beverly Lewis, who owned a few famous horses. In this link you’ll see one of theirs, Silver Charm, getting beat by Free House. You can see the silks they use are Oregon colors-they met at Univ. of Oregon….

Do UGA people make as big a deal out of the black basketball jerseys as they did with the black football jerseys? I remember there was way more talk than necessary about those football shirts when Coach Richt broke them out.

Question #1: With the Jordan Brand delving into football: cleats, player endorsers like TO and Marvin Harrison, do you think it possible that at some point JB will start making uniforms, especially for school like UNC?

Question #2:I was in a Mom & Pop sporting goods store by me buying link link linklink and I happened upon this link. I know that the jersey is a contrived retro butWhat do y’all think about a possible Navy alt for the hoops team?

Long time reader, first time commenting. I’ve recently been arguing about good uniform and logo design with a workmate of mine. He’s from Mexico, and has asked me a very basic question about hockey uniform design that has completely stumped me: what’s with all the horizontal striping on the arms and above the waist? I’ve taken those design elements as a given for my entire life, and have not a goddamn clue why they are there.

I know why rugby uses horizontal stripes (makes you look wider, and therefore more imposing), and why soccer uses vertical (makes you look taller, and therefore more imposing). Does anyone here know why so many hockey designs incorporate the arm and waist stripes?

I tried posting a load of links to all of the great stuff that I found at the store above…it didn’t work. Feel free to browse through the PB gallery.

That shop must NEVER move inventory.

    Matt,

In reference to question #1, I think it’s a possibility for Jordan Brand to make unis, but at the same time, it probably would only be UNC. I just can’t see any other colleges with the Jumpman logo in football. I know JB has Cal, Georgetown, and North Carolina A & T basketball teams hooked up, but I couldn’t see a Jumpman on the other colleges. It almost doesn’t make sense either, considering the Jumpman logo has a basketball displayed; it would just look weird. And yes, I know the cleats made for the athletes in football and baseball (Derek Jeter and Andruw Jones) have the Jumpman, but still…..

I just saw a Subway commercial, and I didn’t realize that they photoshopped the INDIANAPOLIS and 28 from Jared’s shirt……

Fair enough…Common sense doesn’t seem to reign supreme very often im sports enterprise these days.

    Lebron’s logo adorning a college team’s unis?
Last I checked, LJ didn’t attend college and TOSU was the number one maid spurned.

A basketball uniform, whose school and player names are invisible!

Diamond plating on a football jersey.

    Nothing surprises me anymore.

I can see UNC, too; at the same time, it wouldn’t be just ANY football school being outfitted in Brand Jordan. If they were to outfit another FB team, it would be a team with a high Q-rating, like Southern Cal (though the Jumpman would really look out of place on it).

But I can also see them NOT stepping into the FB outfitting biz. It seems like they’re cutting back on this part of their business; over the past few years, the Jumpman has disappeared from Cincinnati (albeit when Huggy Bear left, but they didn’t follow him to Manhattan or Morgantown), St. John’s, and Kansas (whose jerseys would’ve borne the Jumpman had Ol’ Roy not left for Chapel Hill).

As an extremely proud UGA alum today, I can say that it is no big deal about the black basketball jerseys. We wear them almost half the time we play on the road. The black football jerseys WERE a big deal because we had never worn them before (at least no one has indisputable evidence to the contrary).

I like the Navy UNC Alt idea. IMO, UNC does the SOD uni the right way. Shorts not too long, not too baggy, and the Carolina blue is so nice!

In reference to the “navy” Carolina practice jerseys: The Heels used those “Tar Heel Deep Blue” jerseys in practice sessions all last year. It is also no secret that Butch Davis wants to add that color as a uniform option. You will rarely see Davis in practice photos with the link–it always seems to be link or Tar Heel Silver/Grey.

IMO Roy will not add an “alt” to the Carolina Basketball unis–the fan base would not stand for it. Also, being a life-long Tar Heel and being a UNC alum, having alts for basketball would be too much like Duke with their black unis–link

Now the Diamond Heels don’t mind having several link!

I wouldn’t be surprised if Paul wrote about St. Patty’s Day observances tomorrow, but one thing that has happened is the spread to several days before and after the actual day for green unis.

The Coyotes wore green last night (in warmups), the Celtics link on Friday, and baseball teams have worn them a few days before the 17th, now and in the past.

(The Coyotes, meanwhile, didn’t think it was noteworthy enough to put a photo of said jerseys on their website.)

    And then there’s link.

It’s a shame this guy would probably be escorted out of the Trop in the regular season. Wouldn’t want to disrupt the peace and quiet during the game. If he were a Yankees fan on the other hand, no problem.

Trop may have been like that under the old owner but from someone who went to 25+ each the past 2 seasons there we push for noise now. Joe Maddon wants to turn it into a “pit” of noise with cowbells given out the last two years. That guy in the photo has actually a huge following in the outfield. We also have a section right above the announcers called the “bell”fry that is so loud Ozzie Guillen commented on us last year and how different it is now. And this year the Trop should only be louder with more Rays fans there.
