Blue ’Plate Special

jason strudwick.jpg

It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause? Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside.

All of which is very entertaining. But here’s my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates? I always thought they used direct-sewn NOBs. NHLuniforms.com has always shown them that way (compare that treatment to this one), and so do most pre-2007 game photos (here’s another) and game-used jerseys (the most recent of which that I could find is from 2003-04 — definitely no nameplate there). Hell, we’ve even made sure to go nameplate-free when designing Rangers-themed membership cards.

But if you look at photos from this season, sure enough — they’ve suddenly got the telltale fabric strip. It’s on the white jersey, too. Is this a previously unnoticed additional reason to loathe the new Reebok jerseys? Have other teams made similar switches? If anyone knows more about this, please fill us in.

And as if the deficiencies of nameplates weren’t already clear enough (extra seams, loose threads, puckering, etc.), now we can add an additional problem to the list: They come loose during fights.

Meanwhile, speaking of the Rangers, the story of their re-hemmed jerseys has finally been picked up by a local beat writer. For the full scoop, scroll down to the “Hems stops haws” section of this page.

And in further NHL news, Rich Eakin reports that the Penguins will be giving new, non-moisture-repellant jerseys to all of their players — not just to the select few who ask for them. For details, scroll down to the “Replacement jerseys” section here.

(Special thanks today to Matt Harris and Doug Walton for their Strudwick screen grabs, and to Aman Loodu for pointing out the hemming story.)

And Next Week We’re Installing a Hot Tub: Lots of new site-related developments to report today. For starters, for those of you who are into the social-bookmarking thing, you’ll find buttons for Digg, Del.icio.us, Facebook, Furl, Spurl, Newsvine, Technorati, and YahooMyWeb at the bottom of each post. And in response to reader demand, we’re now offering a full RSS feed, instead of a partial feed.

But the biggest news is that my new right-hand man has been chosen. It’s Bryan Redemske, whose name is probably familiar to many of you because he’s a longtime Ticker contributor. He also wrote most of this entry about the College World Series back in June. The depths of his Uni Watch-ishness can be measured by a note he sent to me last night: “Be sure to mention that all of my cycling T-shirts have ‘Bryan’ embroidered on the left sleeve.”

Bryan is, if anything, overqualified for the position. He works in the sports department of the Omaha World-Herald, where he does some copyediting, some page layout, and a bit of writing (and where his ready access to wire-service photos will no doubt come in handy). In other words, he’s already a seasoned media professional, so I can’t very well call him my “intern.” We’ll have to come up with a new title for him, like research monkey assistant editor or something like that. By any name, he’ll be easing into the job over the next two weeks or so, and his first lead entry will probably run later this week. Please join me in welcoming him to the Uni Watch team.

The timing of Bryan’s hire is perfect, because intern Vince Grzegorek has some big news, too: He’s scored a staff position with Cleveland Scene, the city’s alterna-weekly paper, and will be starting there in two weeks. He says he’ll still contribute Uni Watch entries, which will be great if he can swing it (I suspect his new bosses will be keeping him pretty busy). Here’s to you, Vince — big congrats on your new gig.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Yesterday I linked to this photo of Tamba Hali’s chinstrap popping off. That prompted Doug Simpson to send me what he described as “the mother of all chinstrap blowups,” from September’s ’Bama/Western Carolina game. ”¦ In another follow-up, yesterday I asked why Remembrance Day poppy pins had switched from green-centered to black-centered in recent years, which led Lorne Giesbrecht to send me to this page, which has lots of good info (and also led Jeff Ingalls to send me a photo of his poppy tattoo). ”¦ Also from yesterday: I asked what was up with these leg sleeves, prompting this follow-up from John Simmons: “He appears to be wearing a cut-off version of Adidas Powerweb shorts. You can even slightly see the yarn at the bottom of the calf sleeve from where he must have cut it.” ”¦ Brent Hardman notes that UGA captain Knowshon Moreno’s captain’s “C” suffered from a bit of a tight squeeze on Saturday (additional views here and here) — a problem not shared by teammate Matthew Stafford, because his single-digit uni number allows for more space. ”¦ New Mexico wore practice jerseys for a recent exhibition game because their new unis weren’t ready yet (with thanks to Rob Montoya). ”¦ Decal impresario Chris Willis reports that Marshall will wear this memorial helmet decal this weekend. In addition, he says CFL teams may wear poppy decals this weekend. ”¦ I know I’ve mentioned this before, but Louisiana Tech sure does have small nameplate typography. ”¦ Chris Drouin notes that the Oakland Christian High soccer team in Michigan has “Christian” on their shirttails. ”¦ The FIVB has worked with Mikasa to produce a new volleyball for the Beijing Olympics. Details here (courtesy of Jeremy Brahm). ”¦ Kenn Tomasch recently visited Max’s Sports Bar in Glendale, Arizona, which claims to have the nation’s largest collection of football helmets (including some real doozies). He’s put together a fantastic account of his visit here. ”¦ Indiana coach Bill Lynch was wearing a National College Football Day pin — nearly lost among a sea of logos — the other day (with thanks to Todd Usher). ”¦ Man, Joe Torre’s cap at his press conference yesterday was right off the shelf (additional holographic view here). And Bryan Redemske, paying immediate dividends, notes that Torre’s dress shirt had “Joe”-monogrammed cuffs. ”¦ Yet another player with an upside-down 8: Ryan Gomes (with thanks to Josh Feldman). ”¦ Mike Raymers found something interesting: a Roanoke Valley Rebels jersey from the Eastern Hockey League, circa 1970s. I think it’s safe to say that logo would never get off the drawing board today. ”¦ Want to make cake shaped like a jersey? Then you’ll want this (genius find by Ryan Thompson). ”¦ I could definitely get used to this. … Check out the nameplates in Pakistan.

Those Pittsburgh unis last night were great (coming from a Browns fan) except for the pants! Why white when there is NO white on the jersey? Should have been a matching gold with black stripes down the legs.

It’s good to see a fellow living in Omaha get Vince’s old gig. Instead of ultra-detailed Cavs, Indians and Browns coverage, we can now look forward to some tidbits on the Mavericks, Blue Jays and Bunnies.

In sum, congrats, Bryan. However, we must all join together to beg for no new photos of Bryan, or anyone else for that matter, in biker’s shorts.

wow paul, early today – very nice.

no pics yet that i’ve found, but i was at the wake-mars hill exhibition last night, and i BELIEVE the wake jerseys had a ribbon on the front right, US flag on the top left, and a black bar above the names on the back – couldn’t make out if the ribbon was for skip or VT, although the black bar on the back was pretty much the exact same that the ACC football teams have been wearing for VT
Why is the Reebok logo a completely different shade of blue.

The logo on the left looks like it’s the same shade. Maybe it’s some kind of weird reflection or it’s just for the one player.

They look like captain armbands. The more disturbing question is what’s with those haircuts?

the leg sleeves are used to compress the shins its relieves pain from shin splints and stuff like that. I used to wear them when i played lacrosse

Ryan Gomes’s 8 is not up-side down. The Timberwolves’ 8’s have always been like that, it’s just part of their unique font.

Nah, without the white there would have been just too much yellow/gold/mustard. The link had it just right.

Wow, on SportsCenter just now, after showing footage of the Joe Torre Press Conference, one of the anchors said “wow, still has the price tag on it [hat]”…

That Roanoke Valley link takes me to a page that says, “Directly downloading images is not permitted on the Netfirms FREE plan. If you are the owner of this site, either ensure that this image is embedded in a web page, or upgrade to one of the Netfirms premium plans.”

Oh, and I like how the link from Max’s Sports Bar has a plate in front of it with the school name mis-spelled. Now that’s attention to detail!

I wish MNF would have shown the entire halftime ceremony in Pittsburgh. Instead, we got the PTI guys having to scream at each other to drown out the stadium PA announcer.

Later on, I saw at least one All-Time Steeler with his jersey tucked into his chinos, pretty much all the way up to the numbers. Couldn’t tell who it was, but it looked pretty dorky.

I’ve just accepted the fact that I’m a geezer. It’s too hard to keep up with some of this technology crap.

Chris Drouin notes that the Oakland Christian High soccer team in Michigan has “Christian” on their shirttails.

I wonder if they play a team called the “Lions” . . .

Is there any way we can have a choice of full or headline RSS feeds? I sort of liked the shorter one.

Actually, another Roanoke Valley Rebels team used that exact same logo in the ECHL in the 1990’s

Prior to this season the Rangers’ game jerseys were produced by Cosby’s Sporting Goods outside of MSG. There were many times the Rangers would make a big mid-season trade and the pregame show would provide video of the new player’s name being sewn on the jersey inside the store. I was at the Rangers-Mapleleafs game 2 weeks ago and was told by someone who works at Cosbys that they are no longer responsible for the jerseys and that all jerseys are shipped directly from Reebok to the teams now.

I just thought strudwick looked werird because he has #34. Doesn’t look right on anyone on the rangers other than a goalie.

Thanks for the sarcasm, Al Gore.

Here’s a nice piece on High Schools and the addition of link.

While purple and gold are dominant, he added black to the shoulder area of the jerseys.

“I came up with this one, with the Indian head (on the shoulder); it’s really symbolic,” said Prosser, a running back. “Yes, (the school colors) are very important to me.”

Colors of school athletic uniforms are coming under increasing scrutiny as students prefer the addition of trendy colors, like black, while administrators and some graduates prefer a more traditional look.

The issue has played out at Hononegah and at Rockford’s Guilford High. Guilford athletic director Bob Seago said for a while, it seemed every team in the Northern Illinois Conference, in which Guilford plays, wanted black on its uniforms. At Guilford, that could have come at the expense of the district’s traditional light blue and white.

Anyone notice the name plate in front of the helmet at Max’s Sports bar says “Bethal” and the decal on the helmet says “Bethel”.

    Fixed.

Yeah, Louisiana has small typography on their name plates, and it really bugs me! When I started as an equipment manager we did not have the shoulder numbers nor names on the back. We got that changed in 1998, but for the names to go that small must be a Nike thing as they were not that small link.

There has been talk of making LSU wear Purple in this weekend’s game against Louisiana Tech, but nothing concrete as of this morning.

    Full RSS Feeds. Yeah!

I immediately noticed the difference in my feed reader.

    A fellow Rockfordian ?

Thanks to those of you who visited the helmet page, and I’m sorry I accidentally deleted it (and a bunch of other stuff) while trying to chase some Russian spamming bastards off my site.

I’ll have it back up in a bit, with a new URL (Paul, if you wouldn’t mind changing it when I get it up?). I didn’t even get to see your comments, sorry.

As a team apparel sales rep link confirms my experience designing uniforms.

High school kids should not be overly involved in the uniform design process. To be honest 25% of coaches and athletic directors shouldn’t be allowed either.

Good rule of thumb: Just because you have the option to put a bunch of different colors and logos on a jersey doesn’t mean you should.

But the ugly jerseys just make the good ones look that much better. And the uglier they are the more we talk about them.

Those Pittsburgh unis last night were great (coming from a Browns fan) except for the pants! Why white when there is NO white on the jersey? Should have been a matching gold with black stripes down the legs.
I don’t know. There just something about those unis that doesn’t look quite right. I think the yellow is too yellow. Just my opinion.

Wait – the Steelers wear throwback unis, and I don’t hear a peep about it in the Uni Watch Blog until the Comment section?
BTW, I thought the throwbacks looked pretty sharp, especially the helmets. But I think the best throwbacks the Steelers could wear would be to simply go back to block numbers. That italic font they use for their numbers and names looks like **CRAP**!

Ever since the first mention of the Red Sox upside down #8, I’ve started noticing it in lots of different uniforms. Like somebody earlier said re: the Timberwolves, I’m guessing that numerous fonts, even more traditional ones have the 8 flipped from how we’d normally picture it.

Also, thanks for explaining the NCFD pins, I was going crazy trying to figure out what they could have been.

I’ve been playing all my life, and hate playing with my shirt untucked. I think it looks awful, but also if someone pulls on the jersey, how is the ref supposed to know? If I’ve had it untucked the whole time, he won’t notice the difference if someone where to hold me back using my jersey.

I love the full RSS feed!

Also, when leaving a comment, we have the option of including a URL, except the box says, “URI” which in the medical world is short for upper respiratory tract infection. =D

I second the people who like the Steelers throwbacks but I also don’t see much wrong with their current unis.

Kobe Bryant has been playing in the H2K4s this year. Not sure why. He hasn’t worn them in over three years. He wore the H2K5s, then the Air Zoom Kobe, then the Air Zoom Kobe 2. I believe he was still wearing the AZK2 at the Olympics.

Anyone know of a good internet-site where I can find great athletic striped socks for purchase? If so, it would be a great help.

Also, I thought the Steelers unis looked GREAT. At first, I wasn’t so sure, but its a great combination and I actually like them about equally as their regular unis. Its a rare occasion when a team w/ a classic uniform brings another great one into the fold.

I’m actually already up in the membership gallery, but no card yet. I chose No. 11 — I’ve had it for a long, long time. Of all of the Uni Watch-related issues in the past few days, the card took up the most time. That’s a big decision — I didn’t want to screw it up.

Trevor — yup, my wife and I both went to UNI. I couldn’t help the purple, though. It’s everywhere. And all of my neighbors have the same house. To be fair, we’ve never seen one that looks EXACTLY like ours on the outside. But on the inside … whoa — if I wandered into the wrong house, it’d take a while to figure it out.

kenny — that was going to be my next choice.

thanks for the congrats, folks! Aim more toward Vince, though — he’s the trailblazer. I have much work to do to catch up to him.

who the hell sang the national anthem last night in pittsburgh? did you guys happen to hear that?

and another thing. why is PTI so important to espn? i mean, i love the show, but isnt it enough that it has its own 1/2 hour time slot at 530 pm, then, for another 5 minutes it shows up again during the 6 pm SC, and then we have to see it again during halftime of the monday night game?

its like espn cant get enough PTI… just like it seems that espn cant get enough mike tirico.

PTI is in the middle of the 6 PM SportsCenter as a way to try and have SC keep PTI’s audience. That’s one of the reasons the Big Finish has gone from being at 6:05 to close to 6:30 these days.

someone posted months ago some pics of georgia in its red pants and its black pants. the georgia uniform is one in which the alternate pant colors look just as sharp as the standard gray.

    Some hockey-related tidbits:

    1) According to a friend who has been selling the new Edge jerseys, customizing them has become a big problem when it comes to names sewn directly onto the jerseys. The material is stretchy. This causes a multitude of problems for applying letters directly to the jerseys in terms of placement and spacing. Also, with the stretchy material, the letters don’t allow for the jersey to stretch when they are sewn on. The letters fall off because the material of the jerseys stretch, but the threads holding on the letters do not. This is the case with the captain’s C and alternates’ As falling off on some jerseys – they’ve been stretched, and the threads holding it down have broken or glue has separated from the jersey if they are heat-applied.

This is a major reason for the nameplates being applied in a crappy manner on some NHL jerseys, especially when the player is shuffled between the AHL and NHL. They don’t stretch the same way.

    2) Glad to see the Bruins switching to a more-legible font idea.

    3) The embroidered Rbk logos have been a problem since before Rbk took over CCM. If you notice on link, the KOHO logo is a darker red colour than the Blackhawks’ red colour. This is due to the colour of thread not being as precise as the dye colours used in the PMS system due to absorption rate of the dye and drying in the fabrication of the thread.

After manufacture, the thread is dyed. Dye is mixed in large vats; several hundred colors can be produced, and dye mixing is controlled by computer. Large cones or bobbins of manufactured thread are lowered into pressurized vessels, and the dye (and other additives) are released into the vessels by computer. After it is removed from the dyeing vessel, the thread is dried for 24 hours.

In general, it is close to the PMS colour picked, but can be occasionally slightly lighter or darker depending on where in the spool of thread the actual threads come from. According to CCM, they strived to have the closest possible match, but occasionally had jerseys that had logos that were mismatched badly.

From my days in working with NHL jerseys, I can tell you that the Bruins’ alternates (Pooh bear jersey) had real yellow problems in some cases.

I hope that helps the discussion.

Penn State football players will be wearing new, state-of-the-art helmets this fall. The Schutt DNA helmet is “the next step in the evolution of the helmet,” according to Kirk Diehl, Penn State facilties coordinator. The helmets feature Skydex foam, which the U.S. Army uses in paratrooper helmets. “The foam in a helmet is what protects people,” Diehl said. “The Skydex foam is non-memory retensive, so the thinking is that after repeated blows it won’t break down like in other helmets.”

As a Browns fan it pleases me greatly to hear someone other than myself say “Browns are solid this year”…now if they would just wear those blasted striped socks.

I had thought that “Mistake by the Lake” was a reference to old Munincipal Stadium: link

Also, Wayne Rooney is wearing a compression shirt under his short sleeved top. Subtle on telecasts but compared to Ronaldo’s (or any other United players) long-sleeved kit it’s pretty obvious. I feel it’s rather tacky.

Glad someone else noticed this, it drives me crazy. I mentioned it to my wife and she said “but you wear a shirt like that under your jersey.” I replied “sure, but I play for the Bella Vista Football Club, not Manchester United. It’s not like I can get a long-sleeve jersey for my club team.” I also really prefer long-sleeve jerseys in soccer over short, so that’s probably why the Rooney look infuriates me.

    Found this on facebook…
“Noise-out/BLACKOUT. The players(Seniors) and Richt have just asked for a BLACKOUT. Normally im not in favor of it but if the players really want it then lets do it. Get the word out on campus and support the Seniors on the team. We havent beat Auburn and Florida in the same year since 1982, that needs to end this year. If we win out, we will go to the dome(UT will lose 1 more). Sanford holds 92K+ but it hardly ever sounds like it. This saturday against Auburn it needs to sound like it and it starts with us, the student section. Everyone needs to get there EARLY and BE LOUD! Bring the noise for the ENTIRE game! Go Dawgs and wear BLACK!! It is being rumored that the team will run out in black jerseys out of the tunnel!”
This isnt just rooney, and its not just manchester united. A lto of people, just dont like a long sleeved jersey, me being one of them, On Long Island, HS age kids start their club season late, so as not to have a complete overlap with HS sports. Becasue of this, we had a long sleeved kit and a short sleeved. I dont think i even wore the long sleeve… its jsut the feel, all the loose amterial on the sleeves is annoying. Along the same lines, there are people who will wear a long sleeved, but pull the sleeves up to the elbows.

The way it should have been in the link. Triple-layer just doesn’t work with two light colours (white & gold).

Now they just have to change the numbers, and that jersey will be just about perfect.

With the Rangers’ nameplates, the fact that we hear the jerseys keep tearing makes it easier on the equipment guys if they just have the plate glued on . . . toss the torn jersey, peel off the nameplate, stick it on a new jersey.

I miss the CCM and Koho sweaters . . . they were specific to hockey and players and fans knew they were getting quality products. I have a CCM Habs sweater (Roy 33) that I got back in `89 or `90 and has held up great, even after being worn for ball hockey on and off for 17 years.

According to Chris Creamer’s site, the logo has been in existence since 1971-’72 and Jerry West retired in ’74, so it’s possible he wore ‘himself’ for a few years. I don’t know whether the logo was worn on NBA uniforms at that time, though.

Also cool is that he wore his last name on the front of his jersey in college (West Virginia) and in NBA All-Star games.

According to Mitchell and Ness’ reproductions the ’72 Jerseys didn’t have the NBA logo on them. For what I can tell he certainly never wore the current NBA logo on his Jersey. Because Kareem and Magic can be seeen in Jerseys without the NBA logo. Thanks to link I don’t believe he ever wore it on his shorts either, but I can’t be sure when that picture was taken.
