Man Of Many, Many Hats

7lrhShJK

By Vince Grzegorek

As a fan, you might wear a ballcap when you go out to watch your favorite team. But for reasons of logic and convenience, you only bring one hat to the game — right?

Well, there is one man who fails to see that logic, and who appears to be undaunted by inconvenience. As pointed out in the comments section a couple of days ago, it looks like there’s a guy who sits in the first row at Jacobs Field and seems to change his hat during every inning of every Indians game. That would be Tom O’Toole, a 40-year season ticket holder who sits in perfect view of the camera every time there’s a close-up shot of a left-handed batter.

O’Toole began his headgear ritual in 1994, when the Indians moved from old Municipal Stadium to the new ballpark. He figured that he was on camera so much that he might as well have fun with it, neon-style. So he came up with the routine of changing his cap after each inning, meaning that he wears nine different lids during every game. Same rotation of colors, same innings, every single time. They even have a sticker on the underbrim denoting their designated times.

There’s a fantastic article on O’Toole and his bizarre and endearing hat routine in here, including the following highlights: He goes back to the first inning hat if the game goes extra innings; he only wears hats at the game, never anywhere else; he only makes it to about 20 games a year; and his wife has to wear the designated hat if he leaves his seat for any reason. The last one has led some random strangers around town to off-handedly mention, “Tom went to the bathroom in the sixth inning because Joanne was wearing the hat.”

For all the great info in that article, one important thing is left out — or, to be specific, nine things. They don’t go through the montage of hats, which is sad, because it is quite the colorful explosion of color that can only be truly appreciated all together in one place. Here’s the sequence:

Now that is fan dedication, in one of its strangest and most Uni Watch-ish forms. Although we might quibble with some of his color choices, Tom O’Toole’s obsessive dedication to uni-related ritual makes it clear that he definitely Gets Itâ„¢. And if you’re ever watching an Indians game and you’re not sure what inning it is, refer to our handy guide and check for the man with the neon hat in the first row.

And now over to Paul with the rest of today’s news and info.

Research Project: I’m trying to piece together a timeline of bullpen cars and carts. When did they first appear? When and why did they fall out of favor? Which teams had particularly interesting or innovative vehicles or gimmicks? Which pitchers refused to use them? (Mike Marshall comes to mind.) Any other good stories?

If you’ve got any info on this front, please send it here.

ALL MEMBERS, PLEASE READ: I’m making good progress on restoring the missing names from the membership roster, but we’re not there yet. In case you’ve missed my pleas the past two days: A softwear glitch wiped about 90 names off the roster listing, and I need your help to get things back to normal. All members who haven’t already done so should please check the roster listing. If you don’t see your name there, please e-mail me your name, membership uni number, membership level, and why you chose your number. If your name linked to a photo, please re-send it. And if you’d like to help speed up the process a bit more, pick out your card from the design gallery and send me its URL. Big thanks for everyone’s help.

And if you’re wondering about the design of today’s showcase card, it’s based on the back of the Ohio State marching band uniform.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Good breakdown here of Arizona high school football helmets. ”¦ This isn’t me, I swear (good find by Todd Davis). ”¦ Speaking of the Rockies, good article here about their W-L record in all their various uni combinations. ”¦ Latest Euro-styled NBA teams: the Grizzlies and Raptors, who both played games in Madrid yesterday and wore the colors of the Spanish national flag. ”¦ Iowa has a new basketball coach who wants to add player names to the backs of the jerseys, but a new name-free uni set was ordered before he was hired and the numbers are positioned too high to allow for names. Details here (with thanks to Cork Gaines). ”¦ Is Colorado wearing reflective-outlined numbers or what? ”¦ Wake Forest wore a “Skip” patch last night, in memory of former hoops coach Skip Prosser. ”¦ Speaking of Wake, most of the team’s players go bare-legged. But as Zach Smith notes, several players appeared to be wearing striped leggings (additional shots here and here), similar to what Kobe Bryant was wearing a while back. ”¦ Latest college basketball team to go with the System of Dreck: UNC (with thanks to Jordan Woodson). ”¦ Carey Price’s white mask has now been painted (with thanks to Casey Barcomb and Dave Frolick). ”¦ “I was at the Pitt/Navy game the other night at Heinz Field here in Pittsburgh,” writes Doug Keklak. “They have a Steelers Hall of Fame exhibit on loan from Canton — I think it’s something they put together for the team’s 75th anniversary. I snapped some quick photos and put them into this album.” ”¦ You knew Chad Johnson was Ocho Cinco. But did you know Jonathan Papelbon had christened himself Cinco Ocho earlier this year? He’s even got it on his glove (as forwarded by Phil Johnson). ”¦ Jon Eisen just sent me a link to an archive that will take lots of time to explore. For now, though, here’s the cutest uni-related photo ever. ”¦ Yesterday I ran some old Detroit sports photos. As Doug Mooney points out, there’s plenty more where that came from. ”¦ Another small change for the Wizards: Player names, which had been white, are now bronze (good spot by Colin Wilcox). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Good video here featuring the Sharks’ equipment manager showing the art of skate-sharpening.

interesting mention of tom o’toole. my friend and i (who are both yankee fans) noticed that during game 2 of the alds and thought he was involved in a conspiracy (i guess drinking at the time also contributed to this theory) about releasing the gnats on joba.

I like the effort on Mr. O’Toole’s part, however I would at least try to make sure there was a team logo on all my hats. Just my opinion.

From yesterday’s ESPN column: I can’t understand for the life of me why David McClure would be accustomed to having his name spelled “McLcure.” Sure, I could see “McLure,” but take a second look at link.

Why doesn’t that Cleveland knucklehead wear a few different Indians hats instead of all those butt ugly ones?? For God’s sake, the only Tribe hat that he wears is yellow!

OK, a couple things I see here that I just can’t get behind. First, the Wiz need either bigger letters, or to go back to the white lettering. The small bronze just doesn’t work well, at least not on the local TV broadcasts. Also, Carey Price’s mask would have been good had I not seen the white mask. The plain white was a fantastic throwback, and looked brilliant with the Habs’ white jerseys. Just a case where doing more resulted in less. I do like the Grizz unis with the Spanish flag colors, though. It’s odd, since I normally don’t like that color combination that much (the Florida Panthers, for example, I can’t stand watching) but for some reason, it just works there. I also like the reflective numbers. That’s got some nice pop to it.

    link. I wonder who else.

Cornerback Charles Woodson, one of several players fined $5,000 by the NFL for wearing those bright yellow cleats on Sunday night, said he thinks the shoes “should be our uniform. Maybe I’ll lobby for that.”

If I may suggest….I know I’d personally like to know what the featured membership cards represent each day. Like yesterday’s Welsh #2 for instance.

Yesterday’s featured card was based on the link.

Does it bother anyone else that Wake Forest’s link on their helmet doesn’t have the white outline like the WF logo of their jersey? Just a pet peeve of mind. If you’re going to have the same logo on the helmet and the jersey, they should match if possible.

    Haha.
As PL said, “There’s a fantastic article on O’Toole and his bizarre and endearing hat routine in here, including the following highlights: He goes back to the first inning hat if the game goes extra innings…

I can’t remember if we knew this, but link (article mentions pictures, but doesn’t have any)

The Huskies will play this season in new Nike uniforms.

The players posed for photos Thursday in their home whites, which are pretty basic from the front: “Washington” and the player’s number in purple and in the familiar UW athletics font.

However, the uniforms look more distinct from the back and sides, where there is wavy striping on the pants and jerseys. The backs of the jerseys also feature a thin stripe separating the player’s name from his number.

The uniforms are in a mesh-like material designed to draw moisture away from the players’ bodies.

There also are purple road and gold alternate versions.

“They’re great, they are nice,” Overton said. “I wish we could have got black, but these are cool.”

    Heh, the “pants.”

Thank you for this! I noticed this during last week’s games and pointed it out to my roommate (who hadn’t), and we’ve been trying to figure out what the heck that guy was doing to no avail.

    Go Tribe.

Lickliter is the BASKETBALL coach, not baseball.

agreed. if i was a local hat supplier (or even new era, twins enterprises, etc.), id offer mr. otoole a “set” of hats, all corresponding to his current colors, each with the indians logo affixed to it.
nice pub for him and the company…

i am really jumping on board this “alter the nba uniform with a stylization incorporating the host country’s flag colors”. even if/when the colors dont go at all with the uniform, its a great gesture, and intersting to see.

this trend reminds me of that period of time in spurs history when they had the paint splash of link, and on their warm ups.
it had nothing to do with the team colors, but it looked ok.

Wake Forest safety Chip Vaughn apparently managed to get his hands on an old Florida State “unconquered” undershirt which he wore last night against FSU. After the game he took of his jersey/shoulder pads to reveal that he had blacked out the “un” leaving just “conquered” Pretty awesome

    Ah, link to my question:

To celebrate cornerback Charles Woodson’s 31st birthday Sunday night, several members of the secondary – including Woodson, Al Harris, Nick Collins, Atari Bigby and Frank Walker – wore lightning yellow cleats, which are a violation of the NFL’s uniform policy.

So on Wednesday, Woodson, Harris and Collins had FedEx envelopes in their lockers, each with a letter from the NFL informing them they’d been fined $5,000.

Walker avoided the penalty because he changed his shoes at halftime after receiving a warning.

“Al and ‘Wood’ kept theirs on (because) they can afford it,” said Walker, who received the shoes from Nike last Thursday. “I can’t.”

Indeed, Harris said he and Woodson “were expecting (the fine) to be $15,000.”

if i was a local hat supplier (or even new era, twins enterprises, etc.), id offer mr. otoole a “set” of hats, all corresponding to his current colors, each with the indians logo affixed to it.

Now that they are in the playoffs, I bet nobody wants him to change them. Although that could mean LeBron wearing a Yankees cap is lucky for the Tribe too.

Oh my God… Bullpen Cars… One of my all-time favorite baseball subjects that I wish I knew more about…

    What I do know…
    – The Red Sox old bullpen car is in one of the memorabilia shops across the street from Fenway
    – I remember the Yankees using a pinstriped corolla when everyone else was using a standard baseball shaped golf cart.

Would love to know why they died out and when… probably was Terry Forster’s fault… the only way people could tell the “fat tub of goo” was an athlete was if he ran from the ‘pen without being winded.

now THAT is both clever and awesome.

so is that how we celebrate birthdays now? by breaking rules of the workplace and paying thousands of dollars in fines for it?

    hey al, charles…
I’m just sayin’… a 40 year season ticket holder and he can’t get that wife of his to sew on some damn Indians logos?
He probably used up all of his “good husband” points just to get her to wear the hats.

I’m just more surprised that he goes with a set order rather switching hats as luck dictates.

Remember a year ago when we talked about logo disparities? Such as how the Old English D the Tigers use is different on the uni and the cap (the Yankees have this issue as well). I found a photo of Rudy Giuliani wearing a personalized Yankee jacket and link looks different than anything I’ve seen before. Or maybe it just looks odd because it’s white, not navy.

Vince, when you base your post on an article you should probably actually read it.

“Quite a lot of color, but not for every game. The O’Tooles make it to 20 or so each season.”, so he’s not there of every inning of every game.

Also, “His 10th-inning hat, an orange one, came out of the bag on Sept. 5.”, which would imply he is prepared for 10 innings before he repeats.

FANTASTIC OSU Marching Band membership card! I am a former member, and I really impressed (and upset at myself for not thinking of that). I am impressed with the detail, including the fact that the uniforms are actually dark navy blue, and not black. Thumbs up.

And like old-fashioned scoreboards that were prepared for maybe 11-inning games and revert back to inning one, if necessary, he starts his hat rotation over if the game goes a few more than the expected nine.

His 10th-inning hat, an orange one, came out of the bag on Sept. 5, and just before the Indians mobbed Ryan Garko after his game-winning RBI, Tom returned to his seat, and Joanne returned his hat.

You’re right about the 10th inning hat, I misunderstood.

As for the “he doesn’t go to every game”. I just assumed everyone understood that no one goes to all the games. I didn’t mean to imply he’s there every day.

No the Yankees seem to have 4 different NYs. Their Cap, Helmet, Home Jersey and dugout Jacket ALL have a different NY.

They all look like they were drawn by a drunken basset hound. No one ever wants to acknowledge this because God forbid somebody say something other than “classic” “unchanged” about the “great” Yankees uniform.

Good in theory, but he didn’t do a very good job of blacking out the “Un”. Regardless, it was clever. Perhaps not great sportsmanship, but clever nonetheless.

The worst thing about alternate uniforms in baseball is how they play into the superstitions of ballplayers. So now we’re subjected to the butt-ugly Rockies black vests all because they’ve won a few games in them. It makes you wonder how teams without alternate jerseys can ever change their luck or keep their luck going…

I still wish MLB would establish some uniform guidelines with respect to the alternates so that the home and road team both can’t wear dark colored shirts. Course, if that were to happen, then Arizona might try to wear their red or black tops to end the Rockies’ luck.

I read in teh book Crazy ’08, great book that I seem to referece often here, that the NY logo came from an old NYPD medal that was given out. I don’t have the book here to give the exact passage, but I vividly remember the high level specifics as the original owner was a former police commissioner.

Washington Wizards blue and white unis might just be the most underrated uniforms in sports. Very sharp.
Nice color scheme, cool “Friz Quadrata” wordmark and the neat “dc” secondary ligature on the pants.

Okay, so the alternate jersey is a disaster.

Hey I keep complaining about their “classic” road unis, which have been around since the 1970s. An update has long been due.

Whomever’s card that is; when were you in TBDBITL? What row were you in?

I’m a fourth year in KL Row, and when I saw that card in the membership gallery yesterday I thought “that sure looks like a band uniform” and then it was. My only complaint is that the adjusters should be at the same height, surely I’d fail a uniform inspection for such inattention to detail.

Last night, Knicks vs Maccabi Tel Aviv, Maccabi was wearing their silly version of their jersey where Elite (the chocolate manufacturer who is their chief sponsor) was in English and not in Hebrew.

Also, there was a rotating ad which said “Sponsor” supports ISREAL, spelled wrong. Anyone have a screenshot?

I could buy all 9 of those hats for probably a dime each!

You think changing a hat every inning is good. I was at a game a few years back and I noticed there is a woman who has every Phillies uniform for the active players. She wears the one of the current batter and she wears it backward so you can see the name. Never noticed what she wears when they are in the field (this was before Uniwatch enlighten me) but I would guess the pitcher. Now at over $100 a pop that is a dedicated uniwearer.

Not quite uni-related, but interesting nonetheless… The St. Louis Blues have added a yet-unnamed mascot, a la former Expo/current Canadien icon Youppi!

That Blue bear looks like the result of John Belushi forcing Walt Disney into a Vulcan mind-meld at gunpoint… and how many teams have a mascot who’s better-dressed than the team?

On the website you can vote for a name. Unfotunately M.Bearassment isnt a choice.

The Blues uni was one of the best in the league the last few years, now thanks to reebok were back in the middle of the pack.

Don’t know if this has been discussed on the board before, but…

I’m at MSG right now, and I noticed that all the Rangers retired-number banners (Giacomin 1, Gilbert 7, Messier 11 and Richter 35) have radially-arched lettering.

Now, the Rangers have worn vertically-arched lettering for a very long time, and throughout the latter two players’ tenure, and if I recall, when Gilbert and Giacomin were here the lettering was straight, not arched. I’m sure they just wanted some uniformity with the banners, but have the Rangers ever had radially-arched lettering? Anyone know why the banners don’t conform to the jerseys?

I’m suddenly reminded of a pre-season game at MSG around 1996 or so against Pittsburgh, in which Bruce Driver of the Rangers wore a #19 jersey with the name “KAPINSKY” on the back during the first and third periods. J.J. Daigneault of the Penguins wore #57 “KAPINSKY” in the second period.

What they told us was that they were filming a Bruce Willis movie called “Broadway Bruiser,” or something like that, but that was the last I ever heard of it and the movie was obviously never released. There’s no mention of it on IMDb.

I agree, and the last time I did business with them it left a bad taste in my mouth. Bought a jersey billed as authentic, which obviously was not. Some teams will wear the other set of jerseys in order to allow the fans to see the road jerseys once in awhile at home – I know usually Edmonton does this with Vancouver and Calgary for one home and home set once a year.

I think Paul missed the inside track on the biggest Uni unveiling of the Season. The Dillon Panthers. Uniless (meant to type unless right there and it came out Uniless, what can I say, I’ve got Uni on my mind) I’m wrong, they are sporting new Jerseys this season. New Under Armor Jerseys. Almost look purple. Looking forward to your review, Paul. If you want a screen grab, have Bill Simmons send it to you. I know he has this TiVo’d.

wow, I’m suprised no one has complaints about the UNC SoD jerseys. I, being a life-long Tarheel fan, have no problem with the change. Plus they got rid of the stupid shoulder stripes. Yay for that. GO TAR HEELS!!!

Does the MLB policy on wearing alternates only apply if both teams have the exact same color? In 2003 the Marlins and Cubs played at least one of their NLCS games in which the Marlins wore black and the Cubs blue. Does this MLB policy apply during the regular season, too? I’m glad to see that both teams aren’t wearing black tonight. And the Rockies actually look good in the gray pinstripes.

The Douche-backs have uni-jacked the Rockies by choosing to wear THEIR black alts at home tonight.

One of the TBS guys mentioned something about that possibility last night, and someone must have tipped them off. Home team has the first call on uni choice.

The Uni Karma gods will not appreciate this.

Granted, the streak started in sleeved white pinstripes against Florida, then the white vests for four, then gray pinstripes on the road for six, then back to the white vests before Brandon Webb beat them at Coors. All-Blacks since then.

So they waxed the Dodgers in the vests, the Padres and Dodgers in gray roadies, then the loss to Zona in the vests again before going all-black for seven straight.
