The NBA is once again doing that thing where they hold preseason games in Europe and have the teams’ uniforms reflect the the city in which they’re playing. So for last night’s Celtics/Raptors game, which was played in Rome, Boston’s jersey insignia reflected the colors of the Italian flag. That same color pattern was also featured on their shorts shamrock and on the Raptors’ side jersey panels. — Paul

Doesn’t the Ireland flag have the same colors? Or maybe its orange instead of red I don’t know but maybe they could break those unis out for St. Patricks Day.

Are those jerseys on sale to the public? Cause I know a couple of my nationalistic Italian buddies who would love one more thing with the Italian flag. As a Nets fan I look at our jerseys (shite) and the Celts (golden) and weep.

i have to admit, i like what the celtics did.
understated, but cool. i like that they went for the more chill approach.

also, why are they not playing in ireland? wouldn’t they sell a MILLION t-shirts and jerseys there?

Irish flag is green-white-orange; Italian is red-white-green (and yes, the colours of Boston in the pic above are the wrong way around).

Because Ireland doesn’t have pro-basketball teams to play

Ah, I guess that is an Alternate Celts jersey (the base part, the numbers and trim in black). To me it doesn’t look like the Boston Celtics. link is such a classic look. Maybe they just wanted to raise alt jersey sales.

Nothing that clever there, but it makes me wonder what my hotel alias would be, if I ever needed one.

I must say I’m relieved that Michigan Hockey didn’t switch to the Nike Swift sweater template, like had been rumored.
and I’m delighted to see they added a spiffy new link!

hopefully, ‘Whats the deal with the Celtics jersey?’ doesn’t become a “hey, what’s the deal with these Tampa Bay Buccaneers jerseys?’ type of thing

The only time I ever did so was in April of ’98. I signed as Peyton Metalious (right after the draft), and I’m awarding bonus points to those who can tell me what my wife signed as (without using Teh Google).

I’m going to be honest, yes, those jerseys look a little goofy, but i think its one of the cooler marketing ideas the NBA has come out with in some time

    and I’m generally anti-nba

irish flag is orange …not red come out of your cave

I don’t know if any pic exists of it, but its something my wife and I noticed last night at Coors Field, it was either in the 7th or 8th (8th I think), but someone really needs to tell Charlie Manuel to make sure he zips up his fly before he heads out to the mound for a pitching change. Noticed it for about 2 or 3 seconds on the Jumbotron, couldn’t get to the camera quickly enough myself.

So that’s where they were playing! Yeah, somebody posted a picture last night. The T’Wolves had a red border on their jerseys. (Turkey’s flag is all red, save a white star and crescent.)

Is there a reason why LSU uses goal posts with two anchors, rather than the usual single post anchors used by all other fields? Since uniwatch discussed field decoration, I hope this is germane.

    Nope.

Wow, branding a cancer ribbon. Nice going NFL.

(Would have been a bonus if it was an NFL Equipment ribbon)

LSU’s double-standard goal posts are a holdover from the old days, when all the posts were like that. LSU runs under the posts at the beginning of each game. For a while (from the mid-80s to the mid-90s), LSU did have the single-standard, yellow posts. But they went back the year they celebrated the 100th year of LSU football and have kept them. When the Saints played a few games at Baton Rouge when the Superdome was unavailable in ’05, the NFL (which unlike the NCAA requires all posts to be of the single-standard variety, and painted yellow) allowed the posts to stay put.

A few schools have the “old style” posts as well (Florida State and Washington State are two I know of right away)

Speaking of the Saints, it appears they are going with the black unitard look at home against the Panthers.

I don’t know if anyone noticed this last night, but linkon it…who they were playing. I know Montreal is a company, I just found that kind of funny.

When my wife and I got married, I registered us at the hotel under Peyton and Grace Metalious, to ensure privacy from other members of our wedding party.

Enforcer Cam Janssen might have injured his shoulder tonight because of the league’s new Reebok Edge sweaters. His sweater ripped during his two first period fights with Philadelphia’s Jesse Boulerice. That might have helped Boulerice pull Janssen’s jersey over his head in both altercations and win both decisively. Arron Asham also had his sweater tear during his fight with Riley Cote.

“These new jerseys are supposed to make you faster, but what good are they if they tear that easily,” Mike Rupp said.

So, it’s not possible that the injury was caused by Boulerice kicking Janssen’s a**? Twice?!

Unless Boulerice is wearing some kind of SuperEdge jersey, it sounds like wittle Cammy-Wammy’s making excuses for getting beat up.

ok i know this is old but i was reading some of your older post(i just started reading on this website and by the way i absolutely love it. i dont know if u have discussed this already but i can tell you why it appears that ladanian tomlinson is wearing two visors on his mask. it is because he is wearing a nike visor and all they make is clear. so he has a visor insert on his clear one. you can see these inserts on ebay.(type in football visor insert or something simmilar to that.) i can tell that the visor is a nike visor because the tabs on the top of the visor is square(nikes is square, under armours is like half hexagon, and oakleys is round) however he has been wearing an oakley visor during the season along with his awful facemask, just thought the people reading might want to know that

I’m not 100% sure why they are that way, but I think it might have something to do with the fact that the team benches are on the endlines, or maybe because they have to place the supports so far back on the floor that the only way to make them stable is by triangulating.

Paul, a column idea. Say I am the owner of an NFL team that has ugly unis. Say…the Falcons.

one beam from that far back would start to sag a lot sooner than the double after guys dunk on it. plus the supports being back that far kind of rule out players running into it.

i gotta disagree on the redskins. i much prefer the throwbacks they wore in 94. that was just a much meaner looking uniform and is very similar to what i wish the chiefs would do. i can’t get into kc’s ketchup-and-mustard.

At first, I thought it was the TV that was off, then I thought that they mixed some reds with the whites in the wash. Heh.

The Detroit HD feed for the DET-WAS game started out digital, then at some point in the first quarter switched to HD, then back to digital. Then they went to commercial and came back to a screen that said “Fox Los Angeles, DET-WAS” with some message about who to call if there was a problem with the feed.

I used to know a girl who worked for CBS in NY and put the CBS football feed on the air, I wish I still knew her to find out the background, it would be interesting to find out what was going on there, but the Fox HD feed was definitely going out wrong. It was also interesting because the normal broadcast and HD signals are out of sync, but it was switching back and forth pretty seamlessly.

More ribbon trivia – Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy had his on his hat. The officials had a non-branded ribbon on their uniforms, but it looked like a patch.

(Which also means that Mike Tomlin might not be pro-cancer, but could have been wearing his on the other side of his cap, Green Bay style).

The Smoking Gun professes not to know why Matt Lawton signed in as “Eleven Fifty”, but we uniform buffs can give them a hint. Except for a brief stint with the Mets in 2001, eleven and fifty are the only two numbers Lawton had ever worn.

Stuby, “except for a brief stint with the Mets in 2001” covers the 23, and “had ever worn” means that the 15 that he wore with Seattle came after signing that hotel register in 2005.

    My comment was carefully worded so as to cover these exceptions! ^^;
