Why, oh why, did the Saints wear the black pants with the black jerseys again last night? I know they did this toward the end of the season (they actually wore the black pants on the road as well, which was why I was shocked when they wore the gold pants with the white shirts at the HOF Game). This is the NFL, not high school. Get rid of the black pants!

Vince, I think its actually ‘Western Kentucky University’ as evidenced by the initials on the uniforms.

I like the road football uni with the red pants, but the home unis are kind of strange. Any idea what the helmets look like?

I’ve never been a fan of the sleeve link. Just looks wrong. Leave the sleeve blank. Put a logo on it. Stripes are good, too. No caps, though.

What is that? A Michael Vick ‘one-sie’?

It IS indeed, Western Kentucky University, in Bowling Green Ky, my sister’s alma mater. Pretty uninspired uniforms.

But considering that the WKU Hilltoppers symbol is a red towel, what can they do?
But considering that the WKU Hilltoppers symbol is a red towel, what can they do?
that’s pretty tough to work with.

As a fellow who has broadcast ‘Toppers games (during my tenure at Arkansas State), a big BOOOOOOOOO! to those home men’s basketball unis. White numbers on gray (or “off-white”) uniforms??? How ya gonna tell the players even with a scorecard? Yechh!

They should incorporate the Corvette somehow, since the GM plant where they are made is also in Bowling Green.

Russell Athletic strikes out again. Those football uniforms look like a cheap knock-off of the Washington State uniforms. I realize these companies follow templates, but damn, their almost identical. Anyone care to try and design a better one?

For some reason the women’s basketball jersey reminds me of some of the mens’ jerseys that Nike templated at the beginning of the 06-07 season (before the system of dress came to fruition). The Nike shoulder “thing” was a little more subtle than this is…but it’s still the same general look to me.

Hello Pantonistas. My name is ThresherK, and…

…I don’t look good in hats. More specifically, in this post-JFK era, I don’t look good in baseball caps.

A ballcap doesn’t go well with the shape of my head or face. I can’t describe it any other way. (And this is my own opinion, not the result of an intervention.)

Therefore, I feel like I’m missing out on things. I only wear caps to baseball games (Expos tricolour, now appearing in stands for the Harrisburg Senators and Vermont LakeMonsters all over the northeast), sun protection, or when my brother-in-law & family are in town. (They’re transplants to Texas near Round Rocks, and have given me a couple nice caps.)

Without going into specifics, or skull-altering bone surgery, should I simply accept this limitation, or ignore it?

    Thanx in advance,

It looks like the girl in the photo is wearing a long skirt and not shorts. are they going to play Immaculatta (sp) or something from the 1970s?

Man, Brady Quinn looks like a dork with that HUGE orange Riddell Revolution helmet. I nominate ‘The Great Pumpkin’ as a new nickname.

Of course, the king of Dorky is still Peyton Manning, with that big white bulbous Colts helmet.

I really hate those helmets, in case you couldn’t tell. They would look somewhat better if they A) reconfigured the facemask and B) got rid of those stupid, stupid earholes in favor of circles like a normal helmet.

Actually, there’s only one “round rock” in that suburb of Austin, Texas. Hence, it’s called Round Rock.

What kind of hat are you wearing? Fitted or adjustable. Structured or unstructured? Maybe you should pay attention to the maker and stick with a brand you like. Me? I like the Twins (maker no the team) cotton unstructured.

Adjustable, some structured, and always adjusted to the last (largest) degree. Hats which are large enough to go around my head leave me with enough empty space in the crown to smuggle a souffle. And brims on such hats seem to reach from ear to ear.

Agreed! They look like pajamas. In fact ALL color-on-same-color combos do. Just stop it!

My bad. Fixed now. Rough night at the Browns game booing for a couple of hours, and then getting irresponsibly happy for Brady Quinn.

It sounds to me like you need to break in the hat before you wear it, so it lies flat on your dome and not rising up to hide contraband.

Although they use the 5950 baseball caps, this principle can be applied to any hat:

Russell definatly makes some cheap and Ugly uni’s…

It’s entirely up to you. If you’re not happy with the way a cap looks and/or feels, don’t wear it. If you’re comfortable with it, though, then enjoy.

This generalizes to the occasional discussion here about what is and isn’t appropriate for us regular folks to wear. It’s up to the wearer. I might think it’s ridiculous for someone to wear one of those New Era “fashion” travesties, especially when the ballclub’s actual cap is available, but the wearer must like the travesty. There’s no accounting for taste.

wow, and i thought i had a hard time with gold numbers on white during a football game. i feel for ya, man. that blows!

In the Arsenal/Blackburn BPL match, it can be pointed out that for Arsenal some players have the cannon logo in the red portion just below the collar on the back of the jersey, while others have it on the white collar itself. I’ll try and find pictures later, but Eduardo is one who has it in the red, while Van Persie has it on the collar itself.

Not entirely uniform related but I’m watching the Little League World Series coverage right now and Gary Thorne appears to have something on the collar of his polo shirt. Not gonna lie, it looks like bird crap.

what a great sight in today’s yankee game as 3 of the 4 infielders are wearing their pants at baseball-knee height (rodriguez, betemit, philips)… it is something out of the 1950’s for the yanks.
a team that as recently as 2 years ago had not a single player showing any stirrup (uh, I mean sock) this is pleasing to the traditionalist I am!

I haven’t noticed the shirt, but I believe the they are the Wal-Mart knock off versions of UnderArmor. I believe they are called active works. Sorry I can’t find a picture.

I haven’t seen an american team with it, but during Canada’s game at the LLWS yesterday (or the day before) they showed some parents with what looked like homemade team shirts. Then they showed the backside and you could see a 5 inch tall Russel logo on the back of every shirt…

I think it was one of the largest logo’s I’ve seen on a shirt in a while..

Does anyone know why the Browns went back to those aweful brown socks last night? If you’re going old school, wear the striped socks! And I think the Saints look great in the black britches. The Chargers completely screwed up. Old school or new, but not THAT!!!

Russell equals thick durable oxford sweatshirts…never will be anyting but a terrific cut and sew organization…but in light of the crap Reebok and Nike produces this ain’t such a bad thing…

There’s a huge difference between a rugby uniform and an American football uniform. That difference is that rugby players wear shorts and have exposed lower legs.

I think it’s a Russell brand compression undershirt. At the end of the sleeve (can’t remember if it’s right or left) there is a Russell “R” logo.

It’s actually a big ESPN pin signifying that they’re using “robo cameras,” on the collar of his shirt. They were talking about it during the broadcast and how this is the first year that they used the robo camera at the LLWS.

I’m thinking the NE LLWS unis might be Harvard colors, but that’s just a guess. It’s not an exact match.

File this under small world- the football player on the left in the Western Kentucky photo played for me years ago on a jv soccer team in Georgia. I always knew the kid was going places. Just never thought he would be modeling Russell athletic gear.

Holy hell. I’m watching the Giants/Ravens game and I don’t think I’ve seen a more discombobulated uni combination in a long time. Wtf were the Giants thinking…the blue helmets, red/white jerseys, and grey pants?

They look like an unmade bed. Feh.

Here’s a column suggestion, if you guys take such a thing: Can you guys do a paragraph or two on how the new synthetic 5950 caps are holding up this season? There are a number of players (pitchers, mostly) that are in the “one hat all year” brigade, and it seems like some of the hats are starting to look odd.

Take Luis Vizcaino; the brim of his cap is actually starting to get shiny, it’s soaked up so much sweat this season. Anyone else noticing this? I’ve noticed that, despite New Era’s claims on the hat’s seweat wicking ability, you still see salt stains and other telltale signs of well-worn caps.

For the hell of it, I bought one of the new 5950s this past spring; it’s a comfy fit, but a bit boxy. I’m just curious how the hat is going to react as I break it in (even if that break in includes wearing it in a downpour). What have you folks seen there?

    BurghFan,

Thanks for your consideration. And “there’s no accounting for taste”–really, my wife says that about my wardrobe often enough! (Five aprons, three pair of road cycling shorts…I have no trouble being myself.) But I’m just interested in getting a cap to fit my head. My head doesn’t seem oddly shaped, until I put a cap on it.

    Taha,

I will strongly consider the cap altering.

I’m sick of the Saints and Ravens wearing all black! The Ravens are worse with the black helmets, too. Disgusting! And I wish the Vikings would throw those damn purple pants into the Mississippi River!

    IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP.

Why don’t you buy some black leotard pants for a 75 pound bantam team and make them look tough.

I am a lifelong Saints fan and they generally had pretty nice unis through the years. Even the adoption of the p*ss-poor “Vegas Gold” over Old Gold was livable. But the Black Pants STINK !!!
especially w/o the Stripes to break up the arobic leotard look.

The Ravens are All_Black tonight and they ALSO look like crap.

The look doesn’t belong on an NFL Team, and probably don’t belng on an NCAA team.

Even Colorado Buffs are wising up and using gold pants now.

My guess is that the Browns are following a recent NFL trend among players, which is a solid-color sock covering most of the leg, with a hint of white showing at the ankle, and then a black shoe. You see this look with the Bucs, Saints, Seahawks, and I think Eagles…and now the Browns.

Gotta disagree on the Saints all-black. TERRIBLE, especially with stripe-less pants. High school look, all the way.

Totally agree on the Chargers’ new look. Like the white helmet, but pick ONE shade of blue, please. And how about having actual shoulder stripes, too, instead of the hybrid thing they’ve created.

The lightning bolts moves to the side of the shoulders actually looks pretty good.

The Navy blue pants are way Too Dark with the White jerseys.

What if they wore White pants with the White jerseys? Or to really modernize the “throwback”, where the Yellow/Gold pants with the White jerseys?

They would look like he 1960s-1973 Chargers, but with the updated numbers and trim. That would be unique.

Dan K., maybe because they are my all-time favorite team?

Tape, I know rugby and football are completely different–I just couldn’t resist the opportunity to gratuitously link to my favorite team.

To the black haters out there–I don’t care what you say–the Ravens looked hot tonight. If they would only wear black socks instead of white, then they would be ideal.

Can’t disagree about the Vikings “purple” pants, though. They have to go.

in the LLWS, the New England team is sporting UMass colors. that red is spot on and the black and grey trim is the same kind that UMass lacrosse team sports. Harvard has a more marroon almost burgundy color whereas UMass is a deep crimson. Also the accents are UMass.

And as long as i look at the South East team, i still dont see Florida State there

I’m not sure how much this has been talked about as of late, so I may be out of the loop, but I just noticed that the WNBA is still using the new link that the NBA players rejected at mid-season last year. I also remember there being a mild up-roar ’round these parts that if the new ball were to actually stay then what would become of all the team logos that used the older ball design. While none of the teams have changed their logos in lieu of the new ball, the league itself has been using it for all of it’s link as well as on the logo for the WNBA Finals. Like I said, I don’t know if this has been brought up at all, so I apologize if this is old news.

Over the course of this weekend, I’ve seen three Nationals players in legit stirrups: Robert Fick, John Lannan (I’m pretty sure it was him), and the now infamous Mike Bascik. This may be a record for a single team this season.

It’s actually a big ESPN pin signifying that they’re using “robo cameras,” on the collar of his shirt. They were talking about it during the broadcast and how this is the first year that they used the robo camera at the LLWS.
Um, seriously? You need a huge ass pin on your announcer’s collar to signify you have a special camera set up? That’s beyond stupid.

Holy hell. I’m watching the Giants/Ravens game and I don’t think I’ve seen a more discombobulated uni combination in a long time. Wtf were the Giants thinking…the blue helmets, red/white jerseys, and grey pants?

They look like an unmade bed. Feh.
That’s been the Giants normal road uniform for the last several years.
Which clarifies for me why I don’t watch the Giants. :) I know it’s not a new thind necessarily, it just looks crappy. :)
I’m thinking the NE LLWS unis might be Harvard colors, but that’s just a guess. It’s not an exact match.
I think Harvard too…although UMass is a possibiity as well.

Has anyone noticed the Japanese team playing in the Cal Ripken World Series (does Versus not have cycling to show?)? Great unis on the kids, white with navy pinstripes and honest stirrups. They looked great!

Someone help. For many years i have wondered why the Don Corryell Chargers (late 70’s-early 80’s) wore their white uniforms at home?

There was no “heat factor” (miami in the early season) or “jinx factor” (cowboys) or “re-jinx” factor (eagles/redskins forcing the cowboys to wear their dark unis on the road)

If someone could answer this for me I will dance at your wedding/funeral/barmitzvah etc.

There was no “heat factor”? Have you been to San Diego in the summer?

Western Kentucky University is moving towards promoting itself as “WKU”. (A la “USC”, “UCLA”, “UNLV”, et al). The university studied and found out that they are the only entity (collegiate or company) that uses the WKU letters. Whereas, there are a lot of “Western” colleges (Western Illinois, Western Michigan, etc) that all regionally refer to the themselves as “Western.” The university wants to establish its own unique identity by capitalizing on the fact that there is only one WKU. Thus, you have the unis as seen — especially the basketball fronts. (FYI — I learned all of this as new member to the university’s Alumni Board). GO TOPS!

Also, silver is a traditional “third” color that the university started reinstituting a couple of seasons ago. It’s just more prominent now.
