Sleeveless in Chicago

buehrle_450.jpg

Before we get started with today’s entry: I ended up making an important addition to yesterday’s ESPN column at about noon eastern. If you read it prior to then and weren’t keeping track of yesterday morning’s comments, you may want to check it out again, because the mystery of Nomar’s pin (and Manny’s too!) has been solved.

Now then: Got a note the other day from longtime Uni Watch contributor Bryan Redemske, who’s noticed something really interesting:

Mark Buehrle has been wearing cycling arm-warmers under his jersey, instead of a long-sleeved undershirt — specifically, these. You can see the blacked-out Pearl Izumi logo on his left sleeve in this pic — mid-forearm, facing down. And the logo is in very plain sight here. A couple of my buddies have those arm-warmers, and the way they shine in the light is exactly the same.

Coupla thoughts here: First of all, I had no idea there was even such a thing as cycling arm-warmers. Second, this brings up the interesting issue of players using equipment intended for use in another sport. Leaving aside the issue of footwear (there’s a lot cross-sport action there), the first things that come to mind are football facemasks, which have been worn by several baseball players and at least one hockey player. And then there’s Dave Parker, who at various times wore a football facemask and a hockey goalie’s mask (although the latter was only for one plate appearance, which resulted in a walk).

There have also been lots of baseball players who’ve worn golf gloves, and football players who’ve worn batting gloves or scuba gloves. Plus I’m sure there are plenty of other cross-sport examples that I’m not thinking of — let’s have ’em.

Attention Jeremy Brahm!: Got a rather frustrating note yesterday from Ben Wood, as follows:

If you’re ever back in the Twin Cities, you should check out the Ragstock Warehouse in Minneapolis’s downtown warehouse district. Their large selection of used clothes includes a nice collection of Japanese baseball jerseys (which I assume are from high schools or amateur leagues), most of which are under $10 [additional pics here, here, and here]. Some of them have those pinned-on squares of fabric holding the rear uniform number, and some even have all the lettering done up with black Magic Marker. Sorry I didn’t send these to you before your trip to Minneapolis, but the pics have been stuck on my girlfriend’s camera for some time.

Sigh. Now he tells me.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Good article here about tennis equipment sponsorships (with thanks to Dominic Litten). … Mike Milici — the guy who wrote the cap surgery instrux that many of you have found so useful — has posted a bunch of Phillies clubhouse photos on his blog. Among the revelations: Ryan Howard has an Astros jersey hanging in his locker. Further details here and here. … “Last season, Pelle Prestberg, a player for Frolunda HC in the Swedish Elite hockey league, wore No. 100, instead of his usual No. 10,” writes R. J. Pratt. “Based on my VERY rudimentary Swedish knowledge and use of online translators, it appears that he wore it during 2005-06 to ‘celebrate’ the 100th anniversary of Lofsberg Lila, one of Frolunda’s sponsors (as I’m sure you’re aware, European hockey teams have long been victims of extreme logo creep, to the point where the team logos are often secondary). But that’s not the worst. Check out this photo, which shows the team wearing shiny metallic gold helmets. Perhaps the scariest hockey outfit ever worn.” … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: All the Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees are listed by uniform number here. … The Florida Marlins could become the Miami Marlins, according to this report. … The party line is the college football helmt merit decals originated with Ohio State in 1968. But according to this interview (kindly forwarded by Brian Hansen), Nebraska was doing it as early as 1956. To find the relevant portion of the interview, search on the word “Stauber” and read that paragraph. … Ottawa mayor Larry O’Brien wore a Senators jersey (the “M” is presumably for mayor) during a pep rally yesterday (as spotted by Bryan Redemske). … Quasi-logo-related item from Kim Kolb, who writes, “Thought you’d might want to check this out. Who are they? They’re the supporters’ group for the Philadelphia MLS team. Never mind that Philadelphia does not (yet) have an MLS team. They’ve organized, come up with a pretty good name and logo, and even gotten some press. They’ve even got a road trip planned to head up to Giants Stadium to boo the New York Red Bulls, because what Philadelphia sports entity can exist without a little hate for NY? Anyway, they picked the yellow and blue (hoping that a soccer team would follow suit) to match the Philadelphia flag.” … Holy crap.

Holiday Schedule: We’ll have open threads for at least two of the next three days. I might have a new entry on Sunday or Monday — or I might not. Either way, the Uni Watch membership program should be ready to launch when we reconvene next week. Have a great Decoration Day weekend, and watch out for American flag patches falling off of MLB caps.

Have the Mets given up on wearing those dreadful batting practice caps? I noticed that during last night’s pregame, the players and coaches were wearing the traditional (read–blue) 5950 caps with their practice jerseys. Since they never wear blue hats on the road, it seems they have brought them along in place of the batting practice caps.

Some disheartening news from the alma-matter:

“Look for the Gophers football team, under new coach Tim Brewster, to switch from gold to maroon pants for road games this year, and to wear gold pants with gold jerseys for the Ohio State game Sept. 29 at the Metrodome. Minnesota plans to wear maroon pants and maroon jerseys for the Wisconsin game Nov. 17 at the Dome.

The Gophers are switching from black shoes to white shoes next season.”

The switch to white shoes I believe was reported here weeks ago, was it not? The gold-on-gold and maroon-on-maroon hurts bad though. Link link (toward the bottom of the article).

Umm… Those hockey pictures are of Farjestads BK not of Vastra Frolunda HC. Also, the golden helmets are a sign of honor in european hockey. In most leagues a teams top scorer has to wear a golden helmet to signify that he is the best.

At least the Ducks have found a way to make looking at their football uniforms enjoyable.

Yeah, but they’re ALL wearing the gold helmets in the photo.

Not quite cross sport, but Dominic Hasek wears a smaller cage as a goalie mask, looking like link instead of normal masks that cover the throat like link

Yeah, but they’re ALL wearing the gold helmets in the photo.

Also, what kind of honor flows from looking like a total idiot. I seriously doubt crap like this would fly in the NHL. Respect the game, folks.

Howard probably traded jerseys with Berkman or he not so secretly wants to be an Astro…I wonder if he can play somewhere other than 1st…

Well, geez, I knew those were guardian angel pins. I thought the mystery was WHY they wore them, not what they were. I have the one with the angel holding a bat (Manny’s style?). I dont’ wear it because the bat makes it top-heavy and it always falls over. You can get them with different sports equipment, along with plain angels, your birthstone, etc. I also have a weight loss one, standing on a little scale.

Cross-sport equipment? How about the many soccer shin guards (at least that what they started as) that baseball players wear when batting?

Hasek wears a helmet made by link. The mask is a newer verson of an old Cooper helmet like the one Mark Messier wore, but Hasek wore a simple players cage on it that you’ll find on many youth players.

I myself wore the same kind of helmet for a year in college until my parents, coaches and doctor made me go back to the “traditional” mask after a concussion.

Hockey goalies do however tend to wear golf or batting gloves on their glove hand. It’s supposed to minimize the sting of catching a puck. I’ve tried it, but I don’t think it works. You can see a good example link on Belfour’s left hand.

    Some more sports cross-pollenation…

When I played rugby, I wore soccer shinguards and wide receiver gloves with the fingers cut off (you couldn’t wear full-fingered gloves)

    Re: equipment cross-sporting

Once of my roommates in college was on the downhill ski team and apparently they would wear soccer shin guards on their forearms for protection when hitting the poles or gates or whatever they are called.

Brady Anderson of the Orioles famously wore a Roller Blade elbow pad at bat. He used to blade to Camden Yards from his home. You can see pics link and link. I couldn’t find one with “roller blade” visible.

I would imagine wearing a goalie mask while at bat (a la Dave Parker) would greatly reduce your visibility and make it very difficult to hit the ball. Too bad he didn’t get a hit, that would have been highly impresive.

That’s an amazing collection of Japanese amateur jerseys up there. How did Minnesota get so many of them? It’s not like Japanese people flock there on vacation, right?

And Minna, there’s a link for what looks like $15.99; right in the neighborhood, isn’t it?

A Uni Watch membership program? Wow. I love the columns, I love the blog, heck, I’ve been meaning to pick up some Uni Watch merchandise.

But, a Uni Watch membership program? Really?

Thank goodness the Marlins may change to the Miami Marlins.

Now if we can just get the stupid Rockies to become the Denver Rockies the National League can once again be a city league like it should be…

I just read on the Milwaukee Brewers web site that they are going to be hosting a bowling tournament there Oct. 28th. I have two things to say about this:

    1) It says they had this bowling tournament at Miller Park in 2004. Has anyone heard of a bowling tournament being held at a baseball venue ever aside from this? For that matter have there been any other sports taking place in different sports venues in general?

    2) I know I am counting my chickens before they hatch.. but what if the Crew make a run in the playoffs and make it to the World Series? I don’t how the scheduling would work… but what if the Brewers have a home game that night? It says that they venue would be moved to another local bowling alley, but that wouldn’t be nearly as fun a Miller Park.

Looks like the shoulders on those Oregon jerseys look different than the diamond cutters of last year, looks more like a checkeboard

    thoughts?

I know the University of Kentucky and Michigan State played a basketball game at Ford Field a few years ago. They did it strictly to break the record for attendance to a college basketball game, which they did.

I’m pretty sure two NHL teams played an outdoor game a few years ago too. The details escape me though. I’m sure someone on here would know more about it.

Happens all the time. Wrigley Field was the long time home of the Bears. Infact. Wrigley Field has hosted more NFL games than any other venue. Hockey arenas are routinley used for basketball as well. Football stadiums are used for soccer.

Basketball courts are used for volleyball. The list is endless.

The small arena I coach at held the US Horse Shoe National Championships. That just shows it doesn’t have to be a major arena to host a cross over.

I think its been mentioned here before, but doesn’t Justin Morneau wear an NHL T-shirt under his Twins jersey?

Bowling to me is interesting… It looked really strange when they did it at Miller Park. I think they just threw a couple of lanes on the 1st base line. I believe the Racing Sausages also made an appearance if I’m not mistaken.

Also remember that the University of Wisconsin played Ohio State in hockey at Lambeau 2 years ago, and the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four will be at Ford Field in Detroit as well.

Manny Ramirez has been alternating between a couple of (one black and one gray and blue) versions of the Air Huarache 2005 spikes, which are basketball inspired, and a pair of Nike Vapor Jet football cleats.

In addition, Ken Harrelson started all the batting glove stuff by wearing a golf glove when he came to bat one day because he had a blister on his hand, which I’m sure most (if not all) of you guys know.

Why are you comparing a European tradition to that which occurs in the NHL? The leading scorer in all Euro leagues wear a different helmet, and some even wear a different jersey, much like the Tour de France.

I doubt very much that they are not respecting the game. If anything, they are celebrating the achievement of a player, not unlike the Art Ross Trophy or “Rocket” Richard Trophy.

The Frolunda HC/Farjestads BK mixup is unforgivable on my part. I looked at the post this morning and saw the FBK logo and thought – uh-oh, you really screwed up here. My only defense was checking out past seasons to see what Prestberg wore for a number and he had played for Frolunda earlier.

As for the helmets, I knew about the scoring thing (I remember a picture of Rick Nash sporting a snazzy gold helmet in the Swiss league during the lockout) but I was curious as to the reason that they’re all wearing the helmets. I’m guessing the picture is from when Farjestads won the Elitserien playoffs in 2006 – maybe if you win, the league gives everyone gold helmets. Farjestads usually wears purple.

i KNOW that i dont mind the way juan pierre looks cuz his pants are tailored to be baggy, to mimic the look of jackie and gehrig, et al.

i KNOW that i like when some teams wear same color pants and shirts in football, alternate solid color baseball jerseys, the previously stated “pajama pant”, and that i dont mind the color purple.

I’m quite certain the golden hats in Swedish hockey are only used to celebrate a championship and only worn after the final game and never during games. Its similar to the tradition of US teams donning celebratory T-shirts and caps after winning the World Series, Super Bowl etc. The golden hats are ugly none the less.

The thing about Graham that always found intriguing, was that in the old days jerseys were recycled and in the seasons directly following his change from #60 to #14 you can clearly see the outline of the old number on the jersey. In fact, I think the HOF has such a jersey on display.

This day and age, an NFL player probably uses several jerseys a year.

If the Marlins become the Miami Marlins (that would be tough to get used to saying being I’m the only Marlins fan in Idaho), they would go to link on their caps, which is what is basically on their batting practice caps right now. Of course, the M would be black as they’s seriously gone away from the teal.

I’m just guessing here, but i dont think those Japanese jerseys are real teams. I have been in two different second-hand shops in two different states that had a rack that looked exactly the same, with about 50 Japanese baseball jerseys. I even owned a couple of the Jerseys at one point. They were definitely replicas at best.

I remember trying to find information about the “teams” whose jerseys i had and never came up with anything. I suppose they could be high school replicas or what we would call semi-pro or even amateur.

As an ECHL fan, I thought AC would have been a great market for the ECHL. You could have the fans from teams like Johnstown, Wheeling, Toledo, Dayton, etc plan road trips and hit the casinos while they are there. That just wasn’t enough from an attendance standpoint though. Even in the year they won the title it just wasn’t enough. I guess it would be hard to keep a sports franchise afloat based solely on tourism and not a home market.

Another hockey/football facemask convergence was Blake Sloan of the Dallas Stars who wore a bauer helmet with a link for a few games.

I have tried off and on for a few months to find a picture of him in it but no dice.

This might’ve been mentioned already, but at least one NBA player was wearing a football girdle, complete with thigh pads, last year. You reported on it at that time, Paul.

Arm-warmers are also becoming popular among elite runners on cold days to augment what are very skimpy outfits. A way to keep warm while not wearing a long-sleeved shirt. From this year’s Boston marathon, where miserable conditions warranted the extra coverage:

Happens all the time. Wrigley Field was the long time home of the Bears. Infact. Wrigley Field has hosted more NFL games than any other venue. Hockey arenas are routinley used for basketball as well. Football stadiums are used for soccer.

Basketball courts are used for volleyball. The list is endless.

The War Memorial was way too small for an event like that. You can barely get 6500 in there.

Whoa! The CCM cuff logo on the left wrist! That’s the tell-tale sign of a replica jersey. Probably a gift shop leftover in anticipation of the new RBK jerseys. If we made fun of the Washington Capitals for this reason, we cannot give Calgary a free pass. Say it with me…CHEESY!

Now if we can just get the stupid Rockies to become the Denver Rockies the National League can once again be a city league like it should be…
How about the Rockies move out of Colorado entirely. That mile high stadium shit is really old, and in the words of the immortal Bob Murphy after his first game there, “That’s not baseball.”
How about you go %*^& yourself? You want to tell a city/region that supports baseball like Colorado has (4.5 million fans the first year, over 3 million in each of the first 9, despite consistently lousy teams) that they shouldn’t have a team? I’m sorry, we don’t WANT to drive 600 miles to Kansas City or 900 miles to Phoenix to see a game. Look, I don’t like a steady diet of 12-9 games any more than you do, but the humidor has really helped. Park effects used to regularly top 120 and even 130 here, but since 2003 they’ve been 112, 120, 113, 107, and 107. That’s right, since the beginning of last season only 7% more scoring than a neutral park!
If the game was meant to be exactly the same every game their would be one ballpark that all the teams would have to play out of. One of the best things about baseball is going to different fields and seeing how each one makes the game a little different.

    A few things.

    1) I know Payne Stewart had a sponsorship deal with the NFL, and I think Ben Curtis does, so it’s not really equipment changing sports as it is cross-sport sponsorship — similar to the Brewers sponsoring the Milwaukee Admirals.
    2) I didn’t see anyone mention the obvious cross-sport equipment creep. The hockey-style catchers masks that are nearly ubiquitous now. I think Charlie O’Brien was the first to wear a goalie-style mask behind the plate. This caught on so well and so quickly that the old-fashioned catchers’ masks are now the exception, instead of the rule.
More cross-pollination: football players at the speed positions will sometimes choose to wear track spikes. Deion Sanders was famous for this. Is this a myth or a true story?: he once did a 40-yard dash in track spikes and people thought that the shoes made his time too fast. Deion responded by taking off his track spikes and doing a faster 40 in football cleats.
This is a common practice now at the combines. A lot of the guys were track spikes while running the 40.

As a track coach, I have to say that’s a myth. Track spikes are built for speed, such that lightness and flexibility are valued over durability. They offer nothing in terms of lateral support/stability when making cuts and the like. A WR or DB would tear them to shreds in a game situation. Also, track spikes have all their traction up front, from the ball of the foot forward–the rest of the sole is paper-thin and usually smooth. There are no sprinting spikes with spike elements in the heel. Specialty spikes for the high jump and javelin have spikes in the heel (for high jumpers, the heel spikes are only in the shoe worn on the takeoff foot) but you wouldn’t want to wear them on the football field either.

    link

I have read where shoe companies claim to have designed football shoes with a track spike last (shape). The upper materials and outsole are still substantially different, and they still weigh more than track spikes do.

The Oakland A’s of the ’70s had a guy on their team specifically to steal bases–his name escapes me but no doubt someone on this board knows who I’m referring to–and I’ve read that he wore track spikes in games. Assuming he didn’t play much in the field, he could get away with this.

    1) who cares? you have interleague games now, Selig. spread the interleague games throughout the season. have 14 intraleague games and 1 interleague game every day all season. or more if you need to have 2-3 games at a given time for whatever reason.

    2) get rid of 2 teams, go back to having 2 divisions per league of 7 teams each. keep the wild cards if you like, I don’t mind those so much.

    3) add two teams! have 32 teams, 16 per league, 8 per division.

Payne Stewart always wore the plus-fours…knickers. So whatever NFL team he was dressed as, he would also wear that team’s socks. I think he like the all white socks the best, like the Bears wore with thier navy pants.

If we’re talking about a comine situation and just running a 40, you’d be crazy not to wear track spikes. They’re lighter than football cleats, and Deion Sanders notwithstanding, lighter shoes will allow for faster sprinting.

Wearing them in a game is another matter entirely.

This isn’t an actualy hockey goalie mask, but rather a design inspired by one. There are some differences, cage, face opening, backplate. The worst difference is MLB’s refusal to let the catchers decorate the mask like goalies can in hockey.

I like the old school look better though.

Besides making it much less special, it would be stupid to mae teams play by two sets of rules throughout the entire season – at least now it’s only over a few week period.

I think there’s a similar situation in Pittsburgh with our North Catholic High. There has been some talk of not only moving it out of the city, but out of Allegheny County. Some aren’t too crazy about this but I think that the Pittsburgh “area” is what is important with that designation.

This is another interesting topic: teams that have no home games or are away from their traditional home for long periods of time.

The AIFL (LOW level indoor football) had a team fold right before the season started but the players remained and they were known as the “AIFL Ghostriders”. I would equate this with the Atlantic League because of the independent status.

The Arena Football League did this by design with the old Houston Thunderbears team, they got the unofficial nickname of the traveling bears because they played an all-road schedule in order to promote awareness of the league.

I have one (“Dentsu”) that I got in 1981, that was the largest one I could find. No way I can wear it now. They were very cool, with numbers, and japanese lettering on the sleeves. I have not seen one in 15 years. Hope they become popular again. How about amateur uni’s from Latin America, China or other (BB) emerging countries? That would be great.

Last year, MLB put together some logos to commemorate the occasion. What happened to those? I forgot what they looked like. They’re not even on the Giants homepage. No countdown, no “special” balls with logo and serial number, nothing.

I always thought they should have been called the Miami Marlins anyway. Maybe it’s the old crank in me, but I dislike regional names (“New England”, “Golden State”, “Colorado”).
I’m a little bit different. I prefer the city names, but I would still choose a regional name over a state name. I really dislike it when they take the name of a city that they are either no longer in or were never in. (i.e. LA Angels of Anaheim, NY Jets/Giants, Dallas Cowboys, the list goes on…). Honor where you are…not where you have been or wish you were.
In that case, the Detroit Pistons have, for the longest time, really been the Auburn Hills Pistons, which really doesn’t have a good ring to it. Neither would the Inglewood Lakers, since that’s where they played during the 80’s. But it makes sense when you consider that the fans are from the Detroit area and LA area. (The same applies for the NY and Dallas Cowboys teams.)

That’s why I can’t understand why the Bay Area teams get so huffy, especially with the whole 49ers situation and the political intervention (I mean, they’re still in the San Fran area, right?) and the whole issue with the Golden State name. I suspect there’s more regional pride at stake there. But if that was the case, then it has the be the only place in the US where that’s a problem since no other team seems to have any problem at all with usurping the name of the nearest major metropolitan area.
SF, Oakland, and San Jose are three distinct cities that happen to be really close together. The only other similar regions that I can think of are LA/Anaheim, or Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Minneapolis/St. Paul is the classic example of picking the state/regional name instead of picking one city over another.

Santa Clara is across the street from San Jose, and it’s a fairly long (sometimes difficult) drive to SF.

NJ gets it’s feather’s ruffled when a New York team calls NJ home, but refers to itself as NY.

And of course, the Baltimore Orioles tried to do the opposite by reducing their use of Baltimore in order to appear like they represent DC, too.

This isn’t an actualy hockey goalie mask, but rather a design inspired by one. There are some differences, cage, face opening, backplate. The worst difference is MLB’s refusal to let the catchers decorate the mask like goalies can in hockey.

I like the old school look better though.
For the old school look, we’ve got it here in Detroit, now. On the new helmets MLB doesn’t allow “personal” designs but most ,if not all, have a team specific look to them. I, too, think it would be great to see the helmet art on the masks as well.

Minnesota is looking to go link for their home game against Ohio State this season, as well as other changes to their uniform. Speaking of Minnesota, The Timberwolves need a complete makeover.

Re the Golden State Warriors: I believe that when they moved to Oakland they intended to play some games in San Diego, like the wildly popular Kansas City-Omaha Kings. I don’t think that ever happened. They probably did not consider being the Oakland Warriors, because unlike the A’s and Raiders, the Warriors represent the entire Bay Area. By the way, the Warriors must stop wearing those “The City” throwbacks. “The City” is not Oakland.

The Florida Marlins already have a link should they make the name change to Miami Marlins.

One of the things I’ve enjoyed most about this site is that the comments section is typically unusually civil for an internet forum (compared to the comments at ESPN for example). Lately things have started to skew towards and attitude of “we all have to agree or else”… Usually conversation is more interesting when people don’t agree. Todd, I know you’re a regular contributor here and it’s too bad that you’re having to defend yourself today.

I don’t have a problem at all with the Niners maybe having having their new place in Santa Clara. It’s the SF Bay Area, a huge metro region.

For those not familiar with the area, we have the North Bay (Marin Co,) the East Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, etc.) and the South Bay (San Jose, Santa Clara, Silicon Valley, eBay, Yahoo!, Google, Apple, you name it.)

The Niners have their offices and practice facility there, due to the fact it’s further south, and thus warmer. If they can get a fab new stadium done and it has to be Santa Clara, so what? (I can’t afford tickets whether it’s @ the new place or the old dump.) Candlestick is a horrible decaying rusty relic, and an embarrassment to the Bay Area. It needs to be blown up.

Golden State Warriors? I have no idea why they say that and not “Oakland Warriors.”

While we’re at it, you can bet the farm that they will be “The Oakland A’s of Fremont” once their new high-tech Cisco Field palace is built.

And of course, we DO have the best baseball park on the planet not named Wrigley or Fenway, right there off 3rd & King Streets…where it’s a chilly 50 degrees.

Antti, you’re absolutely correct. This tradition started in the early or mid-1980’s (don’t know the exact year). In those days most Swedish Elite League teams wore Jofa helmets and I would assume that it was partly seen as a promotional opportunity in the eyes of Jofa. If we go back to the 1960’s there was a lot more competition among Swedish helmet makers, so that would probably have been an obstruction towards making it a tradition, if anyone would have come up with the idea.

In the 1990’s we have seen CCM and Reebok following this national tradition, producing a set of golden helmets for “their” respective teams, when they’ve won.

In 1979 however, when MoDo won their first national championship, they wore elegant link and the tradition with golden helmets was still some years away. link.
