Corey Story

corey.jpg

On August 6th, 2004, Corey Patterson of the Cubs stepped up the plate to lead off the game against the Giants. He struck out. He went on to strike out three additional times that day, part of a miserable game in which he took an 0-for-5 collar and left three men on base.

And thanks to reader Mark Provenzano, we now know the source of Patterson’s troubles that day. Provenzano was sitting in a box seat near the Cubs dugout, about two feet from the deck circle. And as Patterson stood on deck during the top of the 4th, Provenzano couldn’t believe what he saw. So he took a photo of it — look.

Now, it’s hardly a news flash that today’s MLBers are more than a little misguided when it comes to the intersection of pant, sock, and shoe. But I’ve never seen anything as confused as what Patterson was doing in that game. This is a major league ballplayer?! The mind fairly boggles.

I immediately began canvassing old pics of Patterson, including several dozen from the 2004 season, but there was nothing even remotely like Provenzano’s photo. Maybe it was a one-game thing.

But if so, that was one game too many. Debacles like this just underscore how badly MLB needs to enforce some sort of pant/hosiery regulation — something I’ve been clamoring for ever since Uni Watch’s inception seven years ago. Bud Selig, kindly pull George Mitchell off the steroids probe and put him to work on drafting a set of lower-leg guildlines, pronto.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Ruben Sierra has changed his off-field wardrobe. … Sports reporters have to watch what they wear. … Note the name and uni number on the toes of Soriano’s socks (as spotted by Jacob Reed). … Interesting story here about Akinori Iwamura’s bats (with thanks to Cork Gaines). … Jeremy Brahm reports that Dodgers flameout Norihiro Nakamura is back in Japan with the Chunichi Dragons. “Nakamura has basically burned almost all of his bridges in Japanese baseball and has been injured numerous times in the past,” says Jeremy, “so his uniform number right now with the Dragons is 205.” … Stirrups alert: Indians pitcher Jeremy Sowers. … A Redskins blog is reporting that the team will be wearing 75th-anniversary uniforms next season. … There were some stunningly inappropriate bat boy stylings on display yesterday. … Not quite uni-related, but this might have some equipment implications. … Did Sammy Sosa get his hair straightened or what? … Looks like the Twins’ backstops are still doing the retro catcher’s helmet thing this season. … Excellent roundup of regrettable minor league hockey jerseys here, penned by Uni Watch comments section mainstay Teebz — nicely done.

Not the first time I’ve seen socks outside the shoes. I was working a semi-pro football game last summer, and one of the wide receivers wore his socks over his shoes. It wasn’t even like spats, where the toe and heel shoe through. The entire shoes were covered up by the socks, but the cleats poked through the bottom.

I asked one of his teammates why, and he just said “he likes to wear them that way”. I didn’t think it made sense…I saw him lose his footing a few times.

Bear in mind, the game was being played on a new turf field. So new, in fact, the turf was a little shiny. So it must have been like playing basketball in your socks on a linoleum floor.

As for Norihiro Nakamura’s #205 — when Nippon Pro Baseball instituted the “developmental player” system last year, they decided that these players, who can only appear in minor-league games, had to have three-digit numbers. (If they get called up, their numbers have to change.)

Most of the teams put these guys’ numbers right at the beginning (100, 101, 102…), or right after their staffers who already had three-digit numbers (which put the developmental guys in the 120s), but the Chunichi Dragons — no idea why — decided that these guys would be numbered in the 200s. Last year, the highest jersey number record was nearly doubled when #202 Takeshita link. Nakamura should edge him out this year unless the Dragons keep him on the big club to open the season.

nice links in teebz’s blog. i especially like the attention to detail in the el paso buzzards strip. they even included link.

I’m too lazy to look it up, but was Patterson in a slump before that game? If so, he may have been trying to change the mo-jo a bit.

Anyone else notice that this link has a brewers patch?? Does that strike anyone else as odd?

Patterson’s stirrups reminded me of my time in little league back in the early ’80s. In those days, everyone was issued a pair of gray pants (used-yuck), a trucker-style mesh backed hat, a t-shirt jersey that felt like it was made out of felt, and, yes, a pair of stirrups. (See, only SOME equipment has improved since then.) Many of those young players would do just like Patterson is doing in the picture because they couldn’t stand that “lump” in their shoes. I was never one to go for that – it was high pants for me and properly worn stirrups – but seeing that again brought back some fun 25 year old memories!Maybe it was just “1980s Little League appreciation day that evening” Wonder if he had any Big League Chew or traded any Garbage Pail Kids between innings?!?!??

For Uni Watch old-timers, it’s probably not. It’s been established that the Milwaukee Admirals are sponsored by the Milwaukee Brewers (I’d like to some Uni Watch posts, but I’m having trouble pulling up any achived pages). In fact, in case you missed it, the Admirals actually have worn “Bob Uecker” link for a cross-promotion.

Great write-up by Teebz on the minor league jerseys.
I’ll be attending that Moose game when they hold their Military Tribute Night, so I’ll be able to see first hand whether the uniforms are cool or they ‘assault’ my senses or are ‘offensive’.

    re; OSU unis

Those remind me of the old grannyball uniforms. Nice skirts.

The sleeves are Just Wrong, but at least they seem to match. For now.

Anyone else notice something odd link that Paul put above?

Looks like he is wearing link in the photo. I know Manny has rocked the “Thumps” before, but does anyone else wonder if they are listening to anything during practice or a game?

So, does anyone else think the some of the college Basketball teams have shorts that look like womens skirts? Sometimes they actually “swish” around the legs just like a skirt.

In addition, all the tugging and adjusting that goes on during a basketball game is annoying, especially during a free throw. It all just looks silly to me.

Thanks to Paul for linking me. I am eternally endebted to you, Paul, and the first few rounds are on me if you make it to the Twin Cities and/or Canadian Prairies. :o)

I am still searching for more of the hideous jerseys, but photographic evidence is hard to come by. Perhaps it could be due to the fact that some of these jerseys are ridiculously horrible.

I have been alerted by a co-worker that the Grand Rapids Griffins wore an link.

Also, for those that hated the Tampa Bay Lightning alternates with the lightning bolts all over them, I present to you the link.

Look at this link, Harding had his goalie mask custom painted in support of his sister’s battle with breast cancer.

    Opportunities to play:
    – player holding up shorts while running down court.
    – shorts twisted around players legs.
    – shorts side seam twisted to more than halfway around torso
-holding-up/adjusting shorts while along the lane for a free throw

I don’t know if this has been stated or not, but I wanted to put it out there. Texas A&M has been equipped by Nike for quite a few years, but they are switching to adidas next year.

What the hell is Nike thinking with those jerseys?!?! As ridiculous as they look, I play in a Rec Basketball League and this guy on the other team was wearing one of link under his basketball jersey (except it was black w/ a white stripe)

as a big Buckeye fan I can say the new jersey isn’t so bad – we’ve had the Nike thing with a white strip across the middle of the back for a while. this can’t be much worse.

the skirts are tough to take though. you have to wonder how far this trend will go until someone remembers that a basketball player occasionally needs to dribble the ball between his legs without the ball getting tangled in his uni….

First off, the new nike jerseys for the tournament are ugly. the jerseys are to tight, the shorts are way to long and baggy and whats with nike thinking people will wear long sleeves…?

haha. Teebz, I was in Toronto on the weekend, spoke with a couple of Leaf fans and watched a lot of good hockey, I normally watch the NHL, but being in Canada and watching and talking hockey just makes it so much better. Do you agree with Toronto being the centre of the universe for the NHL?

yes. oh yeah, proper home, geez I hate that. I’m glad next year the home will white, away dark..or is that not yet settled.
It has been settled. The rumours are false. Home teams will continue to wear dark until the NHL announces a change. At this time, no announcement = no changes.

Speaking of socks and shoes irregularities, this former Iowa high school wrestler used to wear his link. The state banned the practice mid-season last year but it didn’t phase the wrestler, who still won his 4th state title with a record of 207-1. I mention the title because it leads me to link, which compared to the first picture demonstrates the practice of wearing an alternate singlet for Finals matches of tournaments.

And RE: the Marine turned Padres pitcher–I posted this link a while back but it might’ve been during the dreaded UW shutdown. I think he’ll have no problem looking good in the Padres camouflage uniforms.

Corey Patterson has been in a slump most of his adult life. A lobotomy is about all that could change that guy’s mojo.

And in a minor, off-uniform rant — the pic Paul linked of Patterson swinging is telling: he’s getting jammed. Nice pitch selection, bud.

    Logo Creep link.

Beckham was hurt when he collided with the advertising signs behind the goal after running to hit a cross into the goal area. The injury was described on the Real Madrid website as possible ligament damage to the right knee.

Absolutely not. Toronto has extremely passionate fans, but they think they are the most important people in the world.

Personally, I found Detroit fans to be far more knowledgeable, and they bleed red-and-white. I was also impressed with Ottawa fans as they seem to enjoy the rivalries with Buffalo and Pittsburgh far more than the Toronto fans. To them, it’s a fun rivalry more than it is a war.

Toronto is an important city in the NHL’s spectrum, but I wouldn’t say they are the most important city.

    A couple of things:

Cpl. Cooper Brannan stated that he moves all of his fingers down one spot in his mitt. He leaves the index finger slot of his glove empty.

Also, lay off the spring training bat boys! Equipment managers have so many things to do in spring training, and they often have a new batboy every other day, so fitting each batboy in his own complete uniform is not always possible.

Some related sad sites at the NC State baseball games this past weekend. I’m not even sure how they’re doing it. The third pic is the most disturbing.

Ironically, I still do this today. I learned that as a kid from a coach who had his index finger broken on a liner back to the mound. I play third now, and I can’t tell you how many times I am thankful in learning this little trick with balls being ripped down the line at me.

Ahh…gotcha. I guess I didn’t even think that they might just be sleeves and not a full shirt. Makes sense now

Many teams in Spring Training don’t have full time bat boys. Usually they just grab a kid out of the stands and ask him if he wants to be the bat boy for that day. Therefore the bat boys in spring training don’t wear uniforms.
Sometimes they’ll give them a t-shirt from the clubhouse so the kids at least are wearing the team’s logo on a t-shirt but it is rare to have fully uniformed batboys for Spring Training games. (At least here in Arizona)

Don’t know how many of you will remember this, but in the mid-80s Nike tried out spandex bb unis for a few schools. The uniforms were a one piece singlet-type, similar to wrestlers.
One school I recall was NC State, but the players thought the uniform was a little too “revealing” – if you know what I mean. You could tell if they were packing or not. So Nike added shorts for the players to wear over the uni-tard. They wore them once or twice, the players hated them, and they ditched the idea. It was around the time Rodney Monroe and Chris Corchiani were there. I’ll see if I can find some pics.

Watched my Flames play the Oilers on Saturday, and the Oil were wearing their vintage royal blue and orange unis. Everything was right, jersey, socks, pants even the helmets were the right colour of blue. Makes me wonder what’s up with the Sabres and their ‘retro’ unis. They wear their new pants with the old jerseys – looks ridiculous. The slanted lines and silver trim on the pants don’t match anything else they’ve got on. And couldn’t they invest in a set of helmets that look like something Danny Gare would’ve worn?

Also, upon reviewing the photos closer it looks like Manny’s cleats may still have the football spike pattern. An expert here will certainly help me.

I’m too lazy to look it up, but was Patterson in a slump before that game? If so, he may have been trying to change the mo-jo a bit.

Corey Patterson has been in a slump most of his adult life. A lobotomy is about all that could change that guy’s mojo.

And in a minor, off-uniform rant — the pic Paul linked of Patterson swinging is telling: he’s getting jammed. Nice pitch selection, bud.

I agree completely. Basically Patterson is on pace to have as many strikeouts as Sosa in about 2 seasons. Thats really saying something being Sosa has the second most K’s all time.

I wouldn’t call the new Nike basketball jerseys a swing and a miss. I would say they’re more of a foul tip that lands in the catcher’s glove…so close, yet not close enough. The tightness of the jersey top has an almost link feel to them. Remember: jerseys in every sport used to be tighter than what they are now. However, Nike FAILED….F-A-I-L-E-D with the baggy capri pants. If the top half of the uniform is going to be tight, you gotta at least tighten up the shorts a bit. It just looks ridiculous.

Side note: The gator-skin pattern looks kinda cool in black.

oh for fucks sake, it’s FUCKING SPRING FUCKING TRAINING.

The only reason that people go to the games is so they can get drunk and puke in their seats, and get away with it, which they can’t do during the regular season, as well as shouting at women to “Show us your tits.”

They couldn’t give two shits about what the batboys look like. In point of fact the only way that the fans or anyone else with an ounce of sense should give a fuck is if they used naked Penthouse Pets as batboys.

As fun as they can be, I generally don’t enjoy baseball video games. They don’t seem to translate as well in the game, and I’m not sure why. It’s weird, cause football games seems to be pretty flawless these days…

Manny Ramirez certainly spent no time displaying his new contract status with Nike. As seen in his typical, yet now illegal (no New Era here) swimcappy thing as well as armbands and bright white spikes, here and here-ish (hopefully that’s Wily Mo Coyote’s RBK emblazoned bag below them and not a case of Manny being Contract Breacher.)

I’m wondering why, in the first picture, the sleeves have a Nike symbol that is upside down? The only time that logo would be rightside up is if Manny holds his arms straight up. Perhaps Nike’s quality-control is failing more than usual…

Imagine Manny at bat, just about to swing. How will the logo look then? I almost have to give Nike credit for thinking that far forward.

I know I’m showing my age, but it sure seems ridiculous to me to be “obsessively” studying uniforms on a video game. Stirups outside the shoes, horrible looking new age Nike basketball uniforms, and alternate hockey sweaters, they’re all fair game. But video games ?.?.?.?

I see that also, and it looks like the OSU jersey has two long sleeves, while Syracuse has two short sleeves…

So will teams have a choice of which of the three versions they can wear?? Will it be consistent in the team itself, i.e. the forwards wearing short sleeves, the guards in long sleeves and the center in the combo?

Seems to me that each player will have the choice of the length of sleeves and other alterations per this sentence from the article: Players will also be able to customize their uniforms by adding options like padded shorts (to protect against the errant knee or elbow) and Dwyane Wade–style leg wraps.

Do minor league hockey teams reuse their equipment like minor league baseball teams tend to? I ask because while the numbers look like they’re stitched on, the nameplates look much more shoddy and temporary…heat pressed maybe?

I wanted to chime in on the Cerveceros conversation of yesterday, i know it doesnt fit today but i am usually not on during the weekend.

It makes perfect sense for the Brewers to wear the Cerveceros during spring training as the particular area of Phoenix (Maryvale) that Maryvale Ballpark (where the Brewers play thier S.T. games) is located in also has a huge latino population.

sorry this doesn’t fit with todays’s comments.

I was a bat boy during spring training for the Royals back in the late-’90s.

I did one game in back to back springs when KC was still in Haines City, FL.

The team gave me a jersey, pants, a belt, and a helmet. I wore my own stirrups and had my hat on under my helmet.

The home team provided a bat boy for both teams so I Bat Boyed for the Indians the year after the ’95 Series with a young Manny, ALbert Belle, Lofton, and Thome.

No, They get new jerseys at the beginning of every season. Because of the amount of turnover of rosters at that level, the nametags are changed pretty frequently. As far as the Brass jerseys are concerned, I played against them when I was playing in Mobile, so I get a kick out of that. I also played with Whitchurch in college. from todays tigers-yankees game: i noticed that verlander wore a regular season cap, not the bp version.

This is 2K7 so what? 3 weeks from now every chubby weightlifter will show off his winter workout in underarmours. As players got more and more athletic, tops got tighter and tighter, due to technical evolutions and fashion trends, starting with football jerseys. If all sportsmen were to wear the same outfit some day, it would be a tight anyway.
I think the pictured unis were conceptuals, and both parts purposely exaggerated compared to what Florida actually wore against Tennessee. The black gator texture is remarquable, and the lettering material seems revolutionnary. Customized cut depending on player position, just like in football, is also a great idea.
Nike simply captured another street trend (arm wraps-bands-pads-tatoos) and turned it into a the next innovation that will keep them ahead for little longer.
This first linkexperiment can only improve and better tight tops big shorts than the opposite. As long as each team identity is respected, and the players are comfortable with, why not?

I give credit to the one man in this photo who knows how to wear his pants (link).

One would think that all the rules the Yankees have ot fit tradition (i.e., no facial hair, no long hair), they would know how pants were worn 20+ years ago

damn bots EK, get that crap off here!!!!!! they are going to ruin it for all of us
Check these out. From College of the Sequoias in Visalia, CA. Some of the best you will ever see. They even have an ‘S’ on the stirrups on their home unis. Here are the links, link, link, and link. The coaches need to get with the link though. Many more great pics on the site.
Oh wow. Those are a thing of beauty. Especially the away ones. Theyre just amazing.

Also, are the jerseys on the MLB.com store the final ones for 2007?

Travis, I think you’re on the wrong message board. Here let me redirect you to where you probably meant to go: link

I’m sure you’ll find plenty of other people there who, like you, can only express themselves monosyllabically and with excessive expletives and think that in doing both of those things simultaneously that you are making any sort of coherent argument.
Hate to break to everyone, but picking on me for writing about batboys is perfectly legitimate (if, in my opinion, misguided). Picking on another reader, and making nasty insinuations about him, is not. Back off.
Paul, I understand what you’re saying and I’m sure everyone else here does as well. Anything written on here is subject to objection by a reader.

I think it’s just the way (i.e., f-this, f-that) that got us riled up. The posts are usually clean and not set in such an angry tone.
This is absolutely correct. (And I see my post on this subj appears to have been deleted.) I object to someone using such profanity. It’s not appropriate, however on-topic you may say it is.
OK, that’s all on that subject.

Does anyone know when the Giants will break out the All-Star patches- opening day I guess?

    @ Allison

I am pretty sure that the properly attired player in link picture is new Yankee 1B, Doug Mientkiewicz.

I totally agree with you on the shock that the Yankees don’t encourage this type of tradition on the major league stage. I was pretty sure that the minor league affiliates of the Yankees were required to wear high socks but a quick Google search proved me wrong. If only some organizations required players to wear high socks or stirrups until they made it to the show, some players may get used to it and retain the tradition. Oh well…

.

I actually like the Iwamura bats. Go figure.
those are actually training bats, I know from first had knowledge that when Kaz Matsui was on the mtes he had black and orange ones (although I’m not sure she has purple/black ones on the rockies)

    still, they are kinda cool…

    For the ISU guys,
I’ll if you can’t find a picture of the 1977 jersey I’ll take a picture of one for you. I go to ISU and at one of the dinning halls on campus they have on display. I’ve actually starred at it wondering why they don’t change back to it, they’d actually have such a good jerseys if they did that.

All this talk bout long sleeves is confusing me. I thought the NCAA did not allow long sleeves, as well as sleeves that are not a solid color?

Brian, are you talking about Clyde’s over in the UDCC? I think I’ve seen the jersey there…they used to have pics up on the athletic website but I’ve been searching there today and found nothing. I’ll be in the area of Clyde’s tomorrow and see if I can snap a photo.
I just came accross this guy’s link account. He has tons of pics of his jersey collection including minor league, NHL and national team jerseys/sweaters.

    link
Kerry, I have to tell you that I did not like the second logo the first time you posted it, but I became numb and accepted it with the repeated viewings. I do like the first logo much better, however, and I dig the jester logo.

Kerry, my comment was about the Jazz unis you linked. It would help if I actually commented on the right post.

more on those new unis. however, it makes me wonder… the “new” UF jerseys from last week are different from what’s coming out later. why would they release three jerseys in one year? seems a bit much, i’m betting UF sticks to their first-new ones and no spandex. i’m sure Paul will keep us updated, right?

whoa! there are three of us here. Brian and allison, i emailed jamie (pollard) and campaigned hardcore for the bball team to adopt throwbacks for next season (100th anniversary). And to get rid of steriod bird and bring back walking cy.

    link
Here’s a link of the new Nike Basketball jerseys.

You have got to be kidding me. These aren’t basketball jerseys, they’re just dri-fit, and the shorts are huge!

Before anyone has even more heart attacks about the new nike jerseys let me tell you the pics are not accurate for Syracuse and Ohio St. The tightness of the jerseys in that pic makes it look like they have long sleeves, but the models are just wearing undershirts. Go to eastbay:

I dont know how to link

Im clicking the link button, then putting the urls in, then clicking the link button again, but hmmm Im a moron I guess

    link

    link

    link

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who’d never heard of the link, but dug their uni’s! Anyhow, I looked it up and turns out that not only do they have a great throwback style, but one of their link is none other than Jays great link, who was link a pretty big link himself.
