Logo Au Go Go

New ESPN column today — here’s the link.

Meanwhile: It’s rare that any genuine football news surfaces in the days before the Super Bowl, but Travis Garnes appears to have uncovered some. It’s buried toward the end of a local TV news report from a West Virginia station (streamable here).

The subject of the report is NFL Creative Director Shandon Melvin, who grew up in the area and designed this year’s Super Bowl logo. At one point Melvin’s father, all proud and probably saying things he shouldn’t be discussing, says, “Right now he’s working on a new logo for the Dolphins and the Chargers.” Then the reporter adds, “Now, the inside word is that [Melvin] is working on a design update of the iconic NFL logo itself.” Then they cut to an audio clip of Melvin, who confirms the league logo revision: “We’re looking to update our brand just a little bit and to, I would say, refine it.”

The NFL logo was last changed in 1970 (before that, it looked like this), and I’m surprised they haven’t changed it sooner. Unlike, say, the MLB logo, which still looks sleek and fairly modernist, the NFL shield looks badly dated, especially the typography. Personally, I kinda like its datedness, but I can’t argue that it’s a great piece of design that should never be tampered with. I was particularly surprised when the used it as the basis for the NFL Network logo, which is about as plain and undynamic as logos get.

As for the Chargers and Dolphins logos, this is the first I’ve heard of any design revisions for those teams. Maybe Melvin’s finally going to incorporate that long-overdue infinite regression into the Miami logo (a dolphin wearing a helmet with a dolphin wearing a helmet with a dolphin, etc.).

Then again, maybe not, because infinite regressions apparently aren’t Melvin’s thing. As you’ve probably noticed, the roman numeral “I” in this year’s Super Bowl logo is a depicted as an end zone pylon, but the Super Bowl logo is usually plastered on the pylons, which means Miller could have had lots of infinitely regressive fun if he’d been so inclined. Instead, he punted. Too bad the West Virginia station never asked him about that.

Okay — happy Groundhog Day, enjoy the Stupor Bowl, and I’ll look forward to seeing lots of you NYC-area folks at tomorrow afternoon’s Uni Watch party. Remember, i.d. yourself as a Uni Watcher to get $2 Buds, or just order a bloody jersey.

Uni Watch News Ticker: There are some nice uni- and equipment-related catalogs available on eBay. I won’t be bidding on this one, this one, or this one, so knock yourself out. … I’m not 100% positive about this, but I’m pretty sure that not a single Super Bowl snap has ever taken place in the rain. That could change this weekend, because the forecast in Miami calls for thundershowers. … Anyone who thinks the NBA is all about the gangsta/hip-hop look hasn’t seen Scott Pollard lately. … There are some quotes from me in this Super Bowl uniform overview. … Jeremy Brahm notes that Hichori Morimoto, who dressed up as an anime character during last year’s Japanese baseball All-Star Game, is up to his old tricks in spring training. … Austin Kearns is changing his uni number from 28 to 25 (with thanks to Jeffrey Soderberg).

Paul is quoted a few times in this article in the Chicago Tribune “Tempo” section debating the uniforms of the Bears and Colts:

This article also looks at the branding of everything (Hello, XLI thongs) with the logo:

This wordy ebay auction contains some interesting information about Nebraska switch in uniform vendors from 1994 to 1995, and how each wanted to provide the special jerseys for the 1995 Orange Bowl.

It turns out that some players wore jerseys from one vendor in the game, while some wore the other’s, and some wore both.

    link

Anyone else cringe a little bit at the thought of an NFL logo change. Call me a pessimist I can’t imagine it will be an improvement.

Paul’s comments are just about the only useful things in that linke.

    Case in point:
“Both Dobson and Lupo call the Colts’ all-white uniform boring, and Dobson notes it ‘adds pounds in all the wrong places, a perennial fashion don’t.'”

    What?!?

I don’t think the NFL logo is that bad. People on this site bash some of the new logos and designs and tend to favor the classics. The NFL logo is simple and recognizable.

could the new chargers logo bring back the horse? or powder blue?

and will miami’s logo ever not suck (sorry i’m a pats fan)

The last league I remember changing the look of the league logo was the NHL. It was not a huge change and I suspect that the NFL change will not be that drastic either.

    Who’s Stupid and Oblivious?

Sorry to repost the link that Paul already had – that’s what you get when you’re up at 5:15 with a 2 year old…

My favorite thing about the Colts/Bears uniform discussion is that “ironically” the Bears uniform “wins.” Of course it does….wanna be more ridiculous the Trib asks its readers to vote on what they think is the best…

Gee, why not have us vote on our preference: Abraham Lincoln or Osama Bin Laden?

Usually revisions have to do with making the logo more aggressive and fierce – How in the world can you make a dolphin look fierce?

    From the Tribune article:

The Colts’ stripes used to be printed on the jersey, but now are a knit inset, says Kenny Gamble, Reebok’s senior director of merchandising for the NFL. “It has to do with fit. It¹s [a] minor [change] from the standpoint of a fan, but it¹s a major upgrade for an equipment manager, as far as how he fits a jersey on his player.”

That’s neat. I like stuff that’s sewed on rather than printed on.

Oh dear god NO! As a die-hard Chargers fan and lover of their uniforms (both the powder blues and the current unis) I am seriously in cringe mode until something regarding the new logo is announced. It just makes me nervous when they bring in a “logo designer” to toy around with the company symbols. If they were going to switch to the powder blues full time – they would just switch. But this smells of a whole new logo. Great – just what I need, my favorite team being transformed into the latest version of the Panthers or Jaguars logo. Whoop-de-fucking-do!

    a. so shandon miller is the name of the genius who designed that very pedestrian super bowl xli logo…

    b. anyone see any portion of wednesday’s ohio st/purdue game? (i of course was watching the nations best college hoop team. the gang in chapel hill) ohio st had a black morning stripe on. any idea on who within the osu program died? i understand that during the last week greg oden’s friend died, and othello hunter’s grandparents died, but those are hardly reasons for a team to wear a mourning stripe.

Make its eyes angry, and have it breaking something. Or something like that. Isn’t that how they usually do it?

Also, give it teeth and an angry mouth.

Or, you know, pick a fierce mascot. Not a pleasant, intelligent creature.

Pick on someone who deserves it, like the Bills or the Titans or the Lions

Looking at this week’s Sports Illustrated this week….EVERY single picture of the Colts has them in road whites and EVERY single Bears picture has them in the home navy blues. Even the throwback pics of Wlater Payton and Johnny Unitas. I don’t know if it was on purpose or not, but kinda cool they only pictured the unis they will wear in the game. Even the ads are correct.

I’m not 100% positive about this, but I’m pretty sure that not a single Super Bowl snap has ever taken place in the rain.

And I’d be willing to bet that as soon as one does it will be the end of the Super Bowl in outdoor stadiums. I seem to remember one of the 49ers’ Super Bowls getting a little messy, but maybe I’m just thinking grass stains.

Even if the Chargers do get a new logo, it doesn’t mean they are getting a uniform overhaul. I’m certain the bolts will still be there.

The Lions need to ditch the black, but I like their logo, as well as the Bills’ logo (although I wouldn’t mind if the the Bills went back to a plain red buffalo).

Hmm. Would the Chargers be messing with the lightning bolt logo, or those boring endzone graphics? (Not the cool throwback one, the regular ones)

Is it me or does the link XLI logo have some shadowing problems? The “XL” looks like it is lit directly from the left while the “I” and the football look like they are lit from the right (2 O’Clock).

P.S. Has anyone heard if the KC Chiefs will be changing their logo/colors? I know Lamar Hunt would have never allowed that being a traditionalist and all. Any rumors from that area?

Speaking of midfield paintings, I am disappointed that for the last few years the Jaguars did have not put a Christmas hat on their logo at midfield. When they did it for the first few years of the team, I thought it was a great signature… one of those “little” things a team can do to establish something unique. It worked on this fan in Milwaukee. I still remember it and look for it every year.

    1) The Cleveland Browns have “A L” on the left sleeve of their jerseys This is in honor of their late owner Al Lerner.

    2) The Pittsburgh Steelers have round like numbers
    on their jerseys.

    3) Please bring back the San Digo Chargers shield
with the horse’s head and the lightning bolt. The only changes here may be to darken the blue and
update the font on the “CHARGERS” script.

Like all “new millennium” logos, the new NFL logo will probably have to have a drop shadow or some kind of pointless 3-Dimensionality to give it “an edge” and make the leage seem “extreme”.

    Leave the logo alone. Jeez.

i understand personal losses and how they affect people. i am totally sympathetic to that. individuals go through personal losses all the time.

if an athletic team, college or pro wears a mourning badge, stripe, what have you, it should be in remembrance of someone within the program, school, organization… and not to sensationalize the loss(es) of 1 or 2 individuals.

if im on that team, and im friends with oden and hunter, i sympathize with them and lend my support in their time of need, but i think i would feel a little uneasy being asked to wear a mourning badge for a friend or relative of a teammate. it is another story to be asked to wear a mourning badge for a figure who impacted the university, the athletic program, or pro organization.

The Steelers’ numbers, while rounded, are decidedly not the same as the Bears’ set.

Not to mention that the Bears set dates back to at least the 1960’s.

The link actually ran a “contest” about a year and a half ago where they asked readers to redesign the Dolphins’ logo. Some were really pretty cool.

On another (completely stupid) note, in the “my eyes are deceiving me” category: I was at the Heat-Cavs game last night and at one point I looked from from my upper-deck vantage point at the Cavs bench. “Some large blond woman has infiltrated the huddle”, I thought to myself. Turns out it was an optical illusion caused by Scott Pollard’s new haircut and the new Adidas warm up. The Cavs version has a “blond” triangle on the back which made it look like Pollard had a very long and wide pony tail. The silly ways we entertain ourselves.

Didn’t they start off the year with a single bolt (no helmet)? I know that for the throwback games they used the Charger Horse shield. Maybe they can use a Zeus-like figure. Or maybe not. ^_^

I think the NFL logo could be modernized or streamlined a little bit without losing any of its major characteristics.

How about reducing the amount of stars in the top? A few stars and the football and it’s not the end of the world.

I think an update of the shield shape would work, similar to UPS. And then redraw the letters to fit the new shape.

As long as the basic idea is the same, I don’t think it will be a problem. Unless they change the colors and flip the letters and stars. Then you have the NHL.

Just wish the Bengals would redesign their marks (again), this time GET RID OF THE STRIPES. Aweful.

link – I think this one would work very well on a helmet…maybe just change the “d” to an “M”.

link – Another good helmet logo…but I would keep the teal instead of going more blue and possibly change the star to an “M” (I’m not really sure the point of the star).
link – One of the best of them all. Would work GREAT on a helmet and links the old helmet “sun-ring” design with the new logo.
link – A little more “cartoonish” than most of the other submissions, but I think it could still work nicely.
link – GREAT modernization of the classic logo. The only thing I don’t like about it is the “flame” design on the dolphin. Get rid of that and you’ve got yourself a winner. Also, looks a LOT like the 5th logo I posted.
link – Another rework of the classic logo…but I don’t think it would be NEARLY as good on a helmet as the previous logo.

And, then there’s link – call me crazy, but I don’t ever see that happenning!

Not just pink, but pink and baby blue. And something about the typography makes me think it’s really SB XL – the sequel.

The NFL logo is a classic. I really don’t think it needs updating. It’s Iconic. It’s like the Coca Cola bottle shape, when you see it, you know what it is. As far as the Chargers and Dolphins logo, does everyone in the league use the same person or agency to design logos, or does each team get to choose? Thanks for Uni-Watch!

link using a southwestern motif in Tempe.

    a couple of items:

    1. the nfl logo was tweaked bery slightly around 1989 or 1990. the blue outline on the lower half of the shield was thickened slighlty. the outer tips on the upper left and upper right points had been flared ever so slightly. the flares were “shaved” off.

    2. the bears went to a rounded numeral font in their third game of 1949. as an aside they wore orange pants for a few away games that season.

Since the 2 weeks prior to the Super Bowl are sometimes a dead period for sports news, what has SI done in the past? Seems like most years at least one of the SB teams would make the cover the week after the championship games. But is SI really that concerned about jinxing or honoring achievement with a cover pic?

… has any team won the SB, changed their helmet design signifigantly (eg Pat Patriot to Flying Elvis), then returned to the SB?

    Glad you asked…

No team that has won the Super Bowl has ever won another one after making a major change to its uniform set. This excludes the Steelers’ rounded numerals as a minor change, and the 49ers’ wearing of their 1994 “throwbacks” in SB XXIX, as that uniform was a temporary alternate used only that year. It also excludes the Cowboys’ occasional use in the mid-90s of the horrendous “star-shoulder” jersey (not the cool retro version), as it was temporary and they had the good sense not to wear it in the Super Bowl. (If the Colts win this year, we’ll have to ignore the grey pants and trim of the early ’80s as minor and temporary as well.)

The Jets, Giants, 49ers, Rams and Dolphins all fall into this category; all have won Super Bowls, then changed their uniforms and not won again; of these, only the Giants and Rams got back to the big game.

The Patriots have worn three different uniform sets in the Super Bowl, which is a record; they lost in the first two and won in the third. The Redskins lost in their ’72 burgundy-over-gold set, then won three and lost one in the white-over-burgundy set they still wear. The Broncos lost four in the “Orange Crush” set before winning two in the current hideous navy blue set. The Rams lost one and won one in the royal-and-yellow late ’70s set, then lost one in the current navy-and-gold set. The Eagles lost twice, in two different sets. The Giants won two in the ’80s GIANTS set, then lost one in the current retro “ny” set.

The Packers, Chiefs, Steelers, Cowboys, Raiders and Bears are all SB champs who have not substantially changed their uniforms during the SB era. The Raiders are still the only team to win the SB representing two different cities; the Colts could become the second.

The Redskins’ 1982 “curved/tucked feather” logo, worn only that year, was a change made by the equipment manager because the “straight-feather” decals kept bubbling up at the lower juncture of the feather and the circle. Unfortunately he did this without notifying the NFL, but no one noticed the difference until they were painting the logos on the field in Pasadena for Super Bowl XVII. The NFL ordered the Redskins to go back to the “straight-feather” logo for 1983, which they did, and the decal materials were improved to eliminate the bubbling problem.

    RE: The SI cover jinx.

These days SI routinely puts out multiple covers nearly every other week. I read an interview with one of theeditors who said that the magazine staff was really getting sick of all of the “UR maguzine succs dicks!! U put my team on the cover an they lost!!!!!!!!!” type of letters/email, especially since they started getting actual death threats from various mooks and douches. Having multiple covers was an easy solution and todays tech makes it pretty easy to do.

Re: Paul Tagliabue being immediately eligible for the HoF? WTF? Doesn’t he have to wait 5 years like players and coaches? Just because he was the commissioner doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have to wait like everyone else.

“Putting on the Blitz: The Football Book for Women”

Susan explains the roles of the seven referees (complete with handy drawings of their signals), provides an overview of each NFL team (covering names, logos and uniforms) and gets into football fashion, dissecting the more than a dozen pieces of gear designed to fortify against collisions of 66,000 pounds.
I was going for a jinx theory… clearly a helmet change doesn’t stop you from making the super bowl, just winning it. So, the dolphins should go back to the dolphin jumping THROUGH the hoop… that makes more sense anyway. Why is the dolphin jumping in front of the hoop now?
Because it’s not a hoop, it’s a sun. But your point still stands, because the perspective seems more realistic when you have the dolphin inside a larger sun. They reduced the size of the sun in 1973 and then the dolphin got larger – hence the sun relatively smaller again – circa 1990.

Wow, I have always thought the dolphin was jumpoing through a flaming hoop.. Why isn’t the sun filled in by the way? Is the dolphin jumping in front of a link?

I acctully brought this up a long time ago, asking if anyhting has happened like that. a team winning a champ., changing their unis and going back. The examples I used was that they changed right after and then were done. I know that the Rams, the Houstan Rockets in like 96 and the Colorado Avs (adding the 3rd sweater like the rangers) were the examples we had then this was on here like 6 months ago

Ha! I don’t know about the full solar eclipse, but pondering the fins logo just made me realize that they won back-to-back Super Bowls with two different helmet logos in 1973-1974: the dolphin-in-the-sun logo and then the dolphin-out-of-the-sun logo. Not a significant enough difference to count as an answer to that earlier question, though. But it does mean that that link in post #120 that shows past Super Bowl winners’ logos is inaccurate for the 1973 season Dolphins.

..If the Colts win this year, we’ll have to ignore the grey pants and trim of the early ’80s as minor and temporary as well.)

Don’t forget link from link that was 9-7 but nearly overachieved their way into the Super Bowl.

I thought Super Bowl IX (possibly IV?), at Tulane Stadium, had some inclement weather… I’m too young to know, but I thought I heard there was freezing rain. I could be wrong.

Hold your horses people. Paul said that he was WORKING ON new logos for the Chargers and Fins. Working on doesn’t mean that they will use them. At least right now.

now, scientifically, the colts should lose their next game due to the fact that the other 2 qb’s were victims of the SI cover jinx. however, you must utilize all variables in this equation.

And SI probably did this to avoid issues with the so called jinx. It makes sense – put both teams on the cover, and one can’t complain that the cover jinx causes them to lose…
Very low. The cast, at least from what I’ve gathered, has little Chicago roots. As for George Wendt, he’s on Chicago Tonight right now doing an interview. And it’d probably be tasteless to do the Super Fans with Chris Farley gone and all. Plus the cast cannot pull off very much these days.

…what’s up with that pinkish-red shape jutting out from the bottom left corner of the first “I”?

I “get” that it’s the leftover drop shadow from the “L”, but the color scheme orphans it completely. You actually have to think a fair amount to figure out why it’s there.

I don’t hate the logo on the whole, and I have no vested interest in bashing it, but that’s lazy. It would have been fairly easy to alter the color scheme or, even better, do away with that gratuitous second drop shadow entirely.

I don’t think that anyone has commented on this yet, but according to my research, SB XVI will be the first to feature two teams with white (not silver) pants since at least SB XXVI, with the Bills and Redskins. I’m not even sure about those two wearing white back then. I’ll keep checking to see how far back it goes. For the record, I strongly dislike white-on-white in football, when the pant stripes randomly come out from the belt. Dark or silver pants are much better, IMO>

As for the Super Bowl logo discussion, I really dislike this year’s design. Yeah, the pylon is cool in a geeky kind of way, and the colors look nice together. But, it otherwise looks like a design inspired greatly, and not in a good way, by the XL design. The Super Bowl wordmark in front of the letters, with the stars on either side, was not a good look last year, and it’s worse this year. Stars are for all-star games and pro bowls. This is the Super Bowl. Other than that, it’s a little boring. They could have done more with the Miami theme.

If I held one of those, the first rule would be: “No computers – only hand drawn images.”

In what year did the Bears wear link?

Since they are playing against Detroit in this picture, I would assume this was during a regular season game.

SB XVI will be the first to feature two teams with white (not silver) pants since at least SB XXVI, with the Bills and Redskins.

Resdkins wore burgundy pants in that game. Last white pants vs. white pants was the year before that, Giants-Bills.

The subject of the report is NFL Creative Director Shandon Melvin, who grew up in the area and designed this year’s Super Bowl logo. At one point Melvin’s father, all proud and probably saying things he shouldn’t be discussing, says, “Right now he’s working on a new logo for the Dolphins and the Chargers.”

Dad??? Whoops…I wonder if his dad is a regular on the Creamer Logo Forum. Leaked his own son’s identity projects…Glad you called him out on it.

Somebody please tell me what the hell those link actually throw back to. They look nothing like the link, which are the sweet ones. Being young, that’s what I consider “throw back” for them. In 1994 the block style numbers with the drop shadow looks more modern to me.

This bugs me every time it comes up.

And the Super Bowl XLII logo sucks.

The new VP Creative Director keeps most of the NFL creative work in-house…and it shows…woof…woof.
what the hell is that color palette…Mary Kay Cosmetics the official sponsor…This is awful

In the mid 90’s the NFL Creative Services division was a formidable group but smart enough to send logo work out to branding experts like Tom Nikosey, Todd Radom and other type and icon experts…now they use an inexperienced logo designer to develop the logos.

    Eco ahead of taste everytime.

What a lameass way to run a global creative brand.

To Stern’s credit, no fucking with the NBA logo.

The sports branding identity work is in the toilet…and it’s getting worse. P-U…

I’ll come back tomorrow with a lot more of my jersey collection, because I want some comments and this will get lost tomorrow. As a preview, here is my one baseball jersey, a #34 Trever Miller black Jays jersey.

When I went to Toronto, they had several game worns on sale, including some old powder blue pullovers from the 70s. Unfortunatly, all of them were 48s or lower, so I couldn’t fit in any. The only 50s they had were coaches jerseys.

I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see the NFL change their Logo pretty drastically. They have not been shy about their desire to expand the league into forgein markets in the near future, and a less “American” looking Logo might be one of the things that would make the league more attractive to certain areas of that expansion.
Just a theory but one that I have not seen mentioned here today.
As to the Super Bowl Logo for Next Year?…….um is it going to be at Virginia Tech?…..sure looks like their colors to me!

CAN WE DITCH THE INSIPID ROMAN NUMERALS ALREADY?!?

I couldn’t disagree with you more– the Roman numerals are a unique thing about the Super Bowl that set it apart. Switching to plain Arabic numerals would be boring (although I predict the NFL will do so for Super Bowl 50, to avoid confusion about what “L” means).

And it makes me sad to see sports columnists complain that they don’t understand how to read Roman numerals. I really hope they’re joking– I think I learned that when I was 4.

I couldn’t disagree with you more– the Roman numerals are a unique thing about the Super Bowl that set it apart.

Forget “Super Bowl L” (so much better than boring ol’ ’50’)– try Super Bowl “LXXXVII” in 2054 or “Super Bowl C” in 2066. Still distinctive?

I was Catholic school-trained and learned by Roman numerals by the time I was about VI and I still say give it up. Boring? Have a look at the 40 designs on link (scroll down) and add the two gripping ones discussed in these comments; can you honestly say this collection is anything other than a cure for insomnia?

And I suspect sports columnists are just as tired of this silliness as I am …

Another case for Arabics at the 2016 game…there already is an “L” in Super Bowl. We’d have the best of both worlds there.

Wow. Looks like I offended some Jaguars fans with my comments / foot-in-mouthiness. Sorry about insulting the Jags logo – I’ll save my Jaguars insults for their black on black pajama unis from now on.

But you’ll notice that there was not a single person standing up for the Panthers logo, was there? I have many NFL logos that I dislike, but after living down here in the South after moving away from my precious San Diego – the Panthers logo is the one that drives me craziest.

I just don’t want my beloved Chargers to go in that direction.

After speaking with a freind that does pr for the Bolts, he told me that there might be some minor changes – specifically to the block lettering logo that is currently painted in the end zones, and possibly to the mid-field logo as well. But at this time he said that there are no plans to changer the helmets or the basic look of the uniforms. Although he did say that ownership has always been in favor of bringing back the powder blues for all of their home games!
