Insert Huge Sigh of Relief Here

escape.jpg

As we look forward to what should be a very aesthetically pleasing Super Bowl, let’s all chip in and send a muffin basket or something to the Bears, as a gesture of gratitude. The NFC is the designated home team in the Super Bowl this year, and you know the Saints would’ve opted for solid black if they’d won yesterday. So here’s to the Bears for saving us from a Super Sunday blackout.

Now then, a few administrative details:

• Hearty congrats to reader Robert DeCorte, who won last week’s Distant Replays $250 raffle (and was surprised to win because, as he put it, “My luck usually isn’t this good”). Robert cashed in his winnings on 1969 Ernie Banks jersey — a fine choice. For those of you who entered but didn’t win, I’m happy to report that another raffle is on the way. I’ll have the details in a day or two. (Also, I believe today is the last day of Distant Replay’s 25%-off sale, so if there’s something you’ve been thinking about buying from them, today’s the day to do it.)

• For people who are dying to hear me express a bunch of thoughts and opinions you already know, I’ll be interviewed for about 10 minutes today at about 6:05pm eastern on WUMP in Huntsville, Alabama. It’s streamable here.

• As many of you know, my ESPN column on the new NHL uniforms will be published today at 2pm. A few minutes after the ESPN column goes live, I’ll post a bonus blog entry here, with lots of additional info about the NHL uni-unveiling event I attended last week.

Meanwhile, here’s a XL-sized dot-dot-dot section to keep you busy until the NHL stuff is available.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Reprinted from Thursday’s comments: Thursday’s entry about the All-American Redheads led reader Dave A. to point out another early women’s hoops team: the Edmonton Grads, whose various uniforms can be seen here, here, here, and here. ”¦ “Not sure if you have been following the Mitch Mustain ordeal at all,” writes Dominic Litten. “While reading about the nonsense from one of his home state columnists, I found some amazing info about Mustain’s need for narrow cleats and what Adidas did to accommodate him.” To see what he’s talking about, go to this page and scroll down about halfway, to the paragraph that begins, “There have been some claims”¦” ”¦ Interesting historical tidbit from Michael Furno, who writes: “My very good fiend’s father is in the top left (#15) of this photo of the Sioux City Siouxs. As you can see, it shows Joe DiMaggio in a Cardinals uniform! I have contacted the Hall of Fame and the Sioux City archive, and no one could explain it. But according to George Randazzo, executive director of the National Italian-American Hall of Fame and a very good friend of Joe D, the man in the Hawaiian shirt is Dizzy Dean. DiMaggio was always a big fan of Dean’s, and Randazzo speculates that either a) Joe D lost a bet to Dean, or b) Joe wore it to get a laugh out of Dean (he apparently loved trying to make him laugh).” ”¦ Penn State’s women’s hoops team will wear pink on February 4th (with thanks to Matt Godfrey). ”¦ For years now the go-to site for old ABA uni photos has been Remember the ABA. But now Ronnie Poore has turned up a new contender, which is full of game photos, game-worn jerseys, and some incredible ephemera. Poke around — it’s worth it. ”¦ Scroll down the last entry in this Q&A session for a really great factoid about Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury (as spotted by Jerry Wolper). ”¦ Excellent article here about how the Warriors’ equipment manager coped with an eight-player trade (with thanks to Alex Moggridge). ”¦ Latest athlete only too happy to be branded as a slave to the corporate plantation: Jeff Samardzija, who wore an Under Armour lapel pin at his Cubs press conference the other day. ”¦ Reprinted from Saturday’s comments: “With about two minutes left in the first half of today’s Texas/Villanova game, the refs actually had to peel the Big East decals off of the lane on both ends of the court because the players were slipping on them,” says Will Morris. “I don’t have a pic, but I also don’t remember ever seeing a court decal having to be peeled off because of slippage issues.” ”¦ The NBA’s All-Star Game jerseys will look like this and this (minus that URL watermark, natch). Not bad. ”¦ “Here’s the new football helmet for the University of Nebraska at Omaha,” writes Brian Redemske. “The excitement is over the decal, and I’m guessing the metallic paint will send hearts aflutter. Their previous lids were flat red with no logo.” ”¦ Japanese news from Jeremy Brahm: “The Hiroshima Toyo Carp have a new road uniform, with cursive script returning for the first time in 19 years. Sanfrecce Hiroshima have introduced their new uniforms as well. This is the first time that the team is placing player names on the back of their jerseys (teams in the J-League are not required at this time to do that). And the Urawa Red Diamonds (Reds for short) have introduced their new home uniforms. They will have two different home sponsors: DHL for international competitions and SAVAS for domestic competitions.” ”¦ John Cary notes that some Miami players had straight nameplates during Saturday’s game against FSU, while other players’ nameplates were radially arched. And those FSU unis, incidentally, were 1972 throwbacks. ”¦ Taylor Gaddy likes George Mason’s new gold unis, so he sent an enthusiastic e-mail to coach Jim Larranaga, who responded thusly: “After last season we asked the team if they wanted something special. They said yes — they wanted gold uniforms along with the normal green and white. Our George Mason players designed the uniforms themselves via Nike uniform web site. We like when our players get to learn something about business ordering these uniforms. It makes them appreciate it more. Everybody seems to love them.” ”¦ The Kings retired Luc Robitaille’s number on Saturday night, and wore a jersey patch to boot. ”¦ As many of you know, Oakland University’s hoops team has been superstitiously wearing mismatched jerseys and shorts. There’s a good article about it here. ”¦ Greg Trandel notes that the “L” in “Atlanta” on the Thrashers’ left sleeve is wider than it is long, which looks really odd now that he’s pointed it out. ”¦ “I’m watching West Ham v. Newcastle here at about 3am,” writes apparent insomniac Todd Davis, “and West Ham has the funky solid powder blue left sleeve (with white stripes), and then the maroon right sleeve with the vertical powder blue stripe and white stripes as a border (also available with long sleeves). Sort of a modified Phil Knight wet dream or something. The old-school version looked like this.” ”¦ Xian Choy notes that Al Harrington, recently traded to the Warriors, was still wearing his Pacers-colored sneakers the other day. ”¦ Check out Ken Stabler’s red facemask clips.

Sorry I’m posting so much. I don’t post as often as I’d like.

First, I forgot about this. The Chicago Wolves wore a « link » uni last week-end (link!). link‘s the full story.

Found a great link where you can buy from thousands of pucks (from $2.99 up to $100 and more…) and those skaters for table hockey (Stiga). It’s also very fun to look at. Tons of great logos and designs. Of course, you can also find a ton of pucks on link.

Awesome 20th anniversary linkfor Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (link). Here’s a link with the 20th anniversary logo. The two « V »s align so you rean « XX » for 20.

Also from Victoriaville, Quebec, tons of link from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Love the linkunis, with the awesome stripes and the tiger logo on the chest. Am I the only one to find this tiger anatomically incorrect? From the pictures of the teams from the 40s, you see where they got the link for this year’s uni. And I think the linkuni are amongst the best ever!

Note that the Victoriaville Tigres has been the name of many teams, playing at different levels. The Major Junior team has been there for 20 years.

Another thing: a picture of a soccer player wearing a scarf (correct me if I got the name wrong) was posted a while ago. I remember the person who posted it mentioned it was a bad case of logo creep. Can’t find it anymore. Well anyway, I found linkof Ronaldo last week. Anyone know if this is some kind of tradition in soccer to give players those « scarfs » ?

    linkfor the AHL All-Star Game.

Someone mentionned a hockey game where there were a bunch of mascots from different sports and teams. link‘s a picture. This is a Hamilton Bulldogs game. So you got the mascots from (those I know): (Blue) Jays, Argonauts(CFL), Wilfrid Laurier U, Marlies(AHL), Maple Leafs, Raptors, Senators, Bulldogs and Sabres. Wich ones am I missing? Teebz? Anyone? By the way, is that really the Sabres’ mascot on the right? Seems like a Buffalo to you? Even the mascot doesn’t like the new logo.

Again Sorry for the long post.

    Paul,
Will we be seeing all 30 teams’ jerseys at today’s NHL unveiling, or just the (previously leaked) all star jersey?

I was watching Sportscenter last night and Mr. Belichick came on the screen; my five year old daughter asked me “Why is that coach wearing a sweatshirt?” and I just gave her a big hug and thanked her for being so observant.

hmm… I just took a peak at the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s website and here’s something I’ve never seen before, a whole division named for a sponsor. There’s the Eastern Division and then there’s the Telus Division.

Wait a second, is there a Nike site where you can design unis?! I am addicted to the Nike ID shoe site, and the uni site would be almost as good as the CCM Sports site that allows you to modify the colors on NHL templates.

I can’t get enough customizing options. Whether it’s goalie pads (I’m not a goalie, but a very bad winger), basketball shoes (haven’t stepped on a court in over a year), football shoes (my only football experience can be safely described as recreational) or soccer cleats (I was okay at that), I love making my own designs up.

Are there links for this uni site or is it just something the schools wearing Nike gear get access to?
Is the Buffalo link some sort of Sabertooth/Bengal Tiger? Seems unnatural.
That does seem really odd. Think they’d have something resembling a buffalo/slug

I think his name is actually Sabretooth as confirmed by this link. So I guess he is a sabertooth tiger. Makes more sense than the Islanders having a dragon!

They need to trade that mascot to the Predators for draft picks.

Count me in as a curious party, although I’m not a *huge* hockey fan, so my excitment is definately a lot less than others. Disclosing the scope of the subject matter isn’t the same as leaking specific information or commenting on the new uniforms, so I think it was a fair question–but in the mean time we will try to be patient (even though I can’t speak for everyone!).

I can’t find a really good photo of the link that they wore on Friday and Saturday’s games. This is the best I could find after too much time looking.

To me, the best part of this sweater is how they put the Admiral logo on a surfboard under a wave (visible on one player on the far left).

Also, the sweaters were auctioned off for charity after Saturday’s game.

The niketeam site is not anywhere near as fun to use as the nikeID site. NikeID is Flash while this niketeam is HTML. A good reference none-the-less.

Does anyone know of a simlar type site for adidas?
so Super Bowl XXI will feature the Colts in blue and Bears in white, I like it…
This has been brought up before (mainly yesterday), but this in an “NFC home game” year, in the sense that the NFC represenative has uniform preference. Pittsburgh had their choice last year, but chose to wear white because they had such success thoughout the playoffs (all games on the road) in them.

As far as scarfs going with soccer, I don’t really know the origin but it’s just a thing that teams sell like a t-shirt or anything of that nature. I’m a fan of Arsenal but I’ve got to say that the “You’ll never walk alone” scarf that a friend of mine who’s a Liverpool supporter has is pretty cool.

From what I could see and recognize, here are the mascots in that picture.

Back Row: Frank Shackleford (Chilly Beach), Dale McDonald (Chilly Beach), unsure, unsure, unsure, Jason the Argonaut (Toronto Argonaut), Bruiser (Hamilton Bulldogs), unsure, unsure, Sabretooth the Tiger (Barney Rubble Hairpieces).

Front Row: Ace the Blue Jay (Toronto Blue Jays), The Hawk (Wilfred Laurier University), Duke the Dog (Toronto Marlies), Carlton the Bear (Toronto Maple Leafs), The Raptor (Toronto Raptors).

Chilly Beach is a Canadian-produced cartoon featuring every stereotypical idea about Canada, including hockey. It is a pretty funny cartoon that can be found on CBC. Their website is link.

I’ll continue trying to find the other missing mascots.

If I was an Amerks player, I’d have a very hard time fighting a player in a floral jersey without breaking into laughter. I bet that whole thing started in that pic because someone said “Hey…nice FLOWERS!”

Paul – Colts or Bears – more aesthetically pleasing Super Bowl champion? I don’t think you can go wrong on either one – such basic logos. If you turn the Colts horseshoe 90 degrees, it forms a C – like on the Bears helmet. My wife pointed that out to me.

Brendan (Post #8) – my wife saw him on the sideline – she doesn’t like or understand football at all, but got caught watching it becuase Cold Case was pre-empted by the game. She saw Belichick on the screen and says “That guy looks like he goes home and surfs kiddie porn after the game.” That was the greatest line I had EVER heard!
so Super Bowl XXI will feature the Colts in blue and Bears in white, I like it…
I think it’ll be the opposite – the Bears in their dark jerseys (designated home team) and the colts in their white.

You’d have to ask them, I guess.

“NFC Champion will wear its choice of jerseys.” says superbowl.com.

In other news, found link on that ABA site in the game programs section. Bizarre, isn’t it? How do you make that mistake?

Scarfs are like hats, you bring them along with you to the match or the pub and link. Also made are special event scarves for things like link, FA Cup Finals and link. (Can we tell I like Celtic yet?)

That strange Atlanta “L” could be a subtle way of making a bad situation slightly better. Vertically stacked type link, and I don’t think this is an exception. It’s possible that someone recognized this but didn’t have the power to stop it entirely, and so altered the “L” as a way of reclaiming a bit of balance. Without it there’d be a lot of empty space in that spot, and it’d probably look even worse.

Of course it’s also possible that someone screwed up and sewed it on sideways.

Think Al Harrington’s footwear faux pas was bad, check out link shot of Steven Jackson- his shoes don’t seem to match the Warriors’ orange OR the Pacers’ yellow!

The trojan-esque guy is not the Senators’ mascot. Spartacus the lion is the Ottawa Senators’ mascot, and Maximus the lion cub is Binghamton’s mascot.

Thanks for the link to that Nike design site. It’s possible to get something pretty decent looking.

    link

This Wizards alternate uniform thing is getting really out of control. This is NOT a fashion mistake that needs to repeated at any cost.

More along the lines of apparel than uni I suppose, but CBS showed 2 fans wearing Colts jerseys at about the 4:10 mark in the 2nd quarter, and I could have sworn that one of them (the older one) was packin’ heat…what was that in his wasitband???

One more time, with feeling: the Steelers were the home designate last year and chose to wear white as the ‘home’ team because, as the 6-seed, they didn’t wear black at all getting to the Super Bowl.

I’m insanely giddy for 2pm. It’s quite ridiculous. I’m also kind of disappointed that all the hubbub will fizzle and we’ll basically just see the 2 All Star unis being modeled.

From yesterday, add the chiefs to the list of teams with the ring of fame.

As for the nike jersey site, my high school created jerseys using that site. Oklahoma state template with black, red, and silver. I loved our jerseys. I’m looking for a worthwhile picture to link.

Sorry it took me so long, but I finally have a pic of the link I hand made forever ago for my old college buddy!

Please use this as a comparison to the new NHL jerseys as an example of the way it could have been for everyone….and then the new template may seem pretty nice!

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!

Can you be fined for talking? Or would you just be balckballed? I imagine a fine becasue where newspaper journalists are concerned, blackballing would be more of a deterent to say, a blogger.

Also, how does the 2pm deadline work? Can you go live with stuff right at 2pm? Do you have to wait until the press conference is over? Do you have to wait until they reach you and say it is okay?

I dont want any info that you cant share yet, just curious on how this whole thing works.

    Thanks dude.

Not to be outdone by David Stern and his New basketball // Old basketball change fiasco… leave it to Bettman to change the only thing still cool about hockey, the jerseys…

As I’ve always said, lawyers should stay in court fighting over divorces, parking tickets and small claims and let the marketing be left to the truly creative types…

The Bears get to pick white or dark blue. If they pick the former, Indy wears blue. If they pick the latter, Indy wears white.

The fact that any of these unis were “home” or “away” during the season is irrelevant now.

Also soccer related, this time from Japan: link is going with the link trend of really bright colors on their jerseys.

And, for those interested in soccer templates. Seems like this link shows the new Puma soccer template. When you compare it with the Simizu jersey above you see that this might very well be the case.

Actually, media moratoriums/embargos are quite common. Very small example: Movie reviewers see films long before they open at the theater, but they’re not supposed to run the review until the film’s theatrical debut. Back when I wrote a marketing column for Fortune magazine, I’d frequently be given info that was off the record until a particular date — it’s all part of how companies coordinate and control the flow of information.

Incidentally, about the 2pm deadline: I was simply told “embargoed until 2pm eastern,” so my ESPN column (which I wrote last Thursday and delivered to my editors last Friday — no frantic retyping for me) is already in the can and waiting until the clock strikes two. Same goes for the bonus blog entry I’ll post at that time.

Yes. Pundits will continue to talk about the British teams that remain in the Champions League until Celtic win or are knocked out.

Regarding the discussion of “undeserved” retired numbers, the N.Y. Islanders went through a period where they were retiring numbers just to get people into the building. Don’t get me wrong, Bob Nystrom and Clark Gillies were solid players and great guys, but not of the caliber of Bossy, Potvin et. al. The franchise was in such disarray in the mid-late ’90s that they had to do anything they could to spur interest.

This was posted yesterday, Just for the record Clark Gillies is the 4th leading scorer in Isles history, an instrumental part of the team winning 4 cups and a hockey hall of famer. Nystrom’s nickname is/was Mr. Islander and was a leader of their cup winning teams. These number retirements are completely appropriate.

Does anyone actually buy the NFC/AFC, AL/NL Champions shirts? They can’t make too much money with these. I mean, if your team wins, wouldn’t you want a Super Bowl or World Series Champions shirt? I’m mixed on the new hoops. I like that it’s just hoops, with no Nike nonsense. I like the Lisbon Lions stuff. However, that team also won everything domestically. Why can’t the inscription be in English? The Portugese tribute alongside the “The Celtic Football Club” badge clashes. I also don’t like this new trend of design elements that can only be seen when the jersey is untucked. The “it’s a grand old team to play for” thing can only be seen when the shirt is untucked, and makes the shirt look busy when worn by a fan (as opposed to a player, where it’s hidden). Red Bull did this as well this year, with the outline of the RB logo, on the extreme lower back. Me no like.

I couldn’t agree more (except for the “beloved Mexico” part…I reserve a hatred for the Mexican national team that equals my hatred of Inter Milan). Nike did a phenomonal job with the World Cup kits, and Adidas has essentially pulled a ‘nike,’ emphasizing company template over original looks over the last year.

It’s a shame, because there’ve been some great Adidas kits over the years, but Nike has far surpassed Adidas when it comes to design, at least for now.

Its really just an impuse buy, I bet the Bears fans were [1] excited and [2] drunk when given the opportunity to buy the hat shirt or both.

I prefer to wait a few weeks after the Super Bowl, World Series, etc. Everything is 1/2 price or better by then. Why pay $30 for a hat now, or $35 for a shirt (current prices here in Chicago for the gear), when it will be SO MUCH cheaper soon? Plus, the selection is better in a few weeks.

Ive never understood the point of paying those prices, just to have it RIGHT NOW. Its not like they are making limited quantities.

Yeah this line of thinking makes sense in years when your team does not make the Super Bowl.

Picture yourself as a Bears fan (no Bowl in 21 years) or a Colts fan (no Bowl since Indianapolis had a team) and watching your team win yesterday. Thanks, Kim, for rubbing it in. I still get mad when I see something about The Vikings/Falcons debacle (I’m not old enough to remember the SB failures)—no way I would buy a division champs shirt. Unless it’s a team that wasn’t even supposed to make it to the playoffs like the 1987 Twins. Then again, they won the World Series that year.

Oh! It’s past 2pm Eastern. Gotta read Paul’s exclusive info on the NHL.
what do the manufacturers do with the patriots and saints champion shirts? are they destroyed? donated to some third world country? recycled into carwash rags?
They are usually donated, I believe.

(Like bootlegged t-shirts police find – that aren’t flammable.)

Paul, Thanks for being that guy.

And was ther an answer to the “How much will the jerseys retail for?”
Here’s link for you Paul!

actually, Urban Outfitters had a shirt that said “That Guy” with two fingers pointing in. I can’t find it on the website, but I have it at home so when work is done, I should be able to link it.

Shouldn’t that shirt then say, “This Guy” ??? hehe

Hey Paul, so do you like the NBA All-Star unis…

“The NBA’s All-Star Game jerseys will look like this and this (minus that URL watermark, natch). Not bad.”

    …or…

“According to a thread on the Chris Creamer boards, the NBA Live 07 video game indicates that this season’s NBA All-Star Game unis will look like this, this, and this — ugh.” (from 10/27.06 link)

    …not?

    yes
but actually the shirt saying “That Guy” works better because the comment is always that nobody ever wants to be THAT GUY in a situation, and the shirt shows who THAT GUY is…

link looks nice. And the Rooney Rule worked and got the best candidate.

Congrats to Peyton Manning, who will be the first QB to start a Super Bowl wearing #18. The only QB numbers that have not been worn by a starting SBQB will be 1, 2, and 6.

Rex Grossman will be the fifth QB to wear #8, joining Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Trent Dilfer, and Matt Hasselbeck.

Are there links for this uni site or is it just something the schools wearing Nike gear get access to?
link is the site
You call putting your high school’s name in place of Oklahoma State’s CUSTOMIZATION?

As Uni Watch has blogged in the past, becoming part of Nikeworld cannot be considered customization.

We got link, mimicking Ohio State for our hoops league, from link — at far less than the quoted prices at the time at niketeam.com to boot.

NCBL sources unis for a lot of the AAU and Pop Warner teams around here. Their work is all done in the Philippines. Their stuff is, in a word: awesome.

Richard, Tomlin does look good in Steelers’ black and yellow, but I will miss him in purple. Let’s give it up for the Tony Dungy coaching tree!

it’s more like the Chuck Knoll tree – since that’s where Dungy got his start in the NFL.

Yes, but Tomlin, Edwards, and Lovie Smith all coached under Dungy, ind I think he has put his own stamp on it. There is a good article on link about it.

I liken it to the Angry Homeless Man. He coached under Parcells, but now people speak of the Belichick tree; that is how I view the Tony Dungy situation. Classy guy who has not gotten the credit he deserves as a coach.

He looked good (as a coach) in purple as well.

Can we all stop calling him an Angry Homeless Man – he’s a head coach in the NFL, he’s not a bum off the streets. If the NFL tells coaches to wear suits, then he will. Until then, their deal with Reebok allows him to wear what’s comfortable.

Nope. Not until he stops dressing like one. although, truth to be told, I do it more because I can never remember how to spell his name without looking it up. I am not saying he has to wear a suit (I don’t care for suits in the NFL), but as you said, he’s a head coach in the NFL–he could at least wear a whole sweatshirt. He could also be a tad bit more personable.

Your second guess would be one answer. There’s a pic out there somewhere on the Internet of a bunch of kids from an African village, and one of the kids is wearing a “Buffalo Bills Super Bowl Champions” shirt.

Dont know if its been mentioned at all , but it deffinately should have been, if anyones seen the latest ESPN the magazine, around page 32-37 in the upper left hand corner of the left page they chronicle a few college students that most likely have waaaay too much time on their hands but have taken to playing “quidditch” ala harry potter, but their uni’s are noteworthy complete with capes and broomsticks, and some awesome sock stripage by one of the female participants

My girlfriend and I were watching the Pats/Colts game the other night, and she made a great comment to me. She is not much of a football watcher unless it is the Packers, and a little bit here and there on MNF. But, when she saw coach Angry Homeless Mad on the sidelines she stated…

“Is that the coach of the Patriots? He doesn’t even look like a coach. He looks like a homeless man. He should get fined for wearing that. Didn’t that Johnson guy from the Bengels get fined for wearing the wrong colored shoes? He looks so stupid. Why do they let him wear that?”

    Amen.

Angry Homeless Guy in ripped sweatshirt = 3 Super Bowl rings.

Guys in suits this season = 0 Super Bowl rings.

    The sweatshirt can stay.

Ah, but as we say on this board, O.J., it’s not about performance, it’s about appearance!
