Sock Hop

neumann3.jpg

New ESPN column today. I’ll add the link when it goes live. [Update: Oops, no ESPN column today after all — it’s been bumped to next week.]

Meanwhile, check out this coincidence: Yesterday’s Comments section included a bit of chatter about kickers who wear mismatched shoe colors (punters, too), which then segued into a discussion of barefoot kickers. I read some of those comments, and then I did some photo research for another column. And that’s when I came across some photos of Layne Neumann.

Neumann is the kicker for Texas A&M, and he does something I’ve never seen before: He kicks while wearing a sock (additional views here and here, the latter of which should appeal to those dirty-sock fetishists who flock to Witesock’s site). Anyone know of other kickers or punters who’ve done this?

Personally, I’ve always liked barefoot kickers. The ones who come most readily to mind are Rich Karlis (note his admirable attention to sock stripes, even on his bare leg), Tony Franklin (who did his college kicking at Texas A&M — perhaps he was an inspiration to Neumann?), and Mike Lansford. But here are some you might not know about:

†¢ Johnson Lau: Lau grew up playing barefoot football — “a popular version of the gridiron sport in the pre-World War II days,” according to this article — and then became a standout barefoot placekicker, dropkicker, and punter in college and grad school during the 1940s. The Eagles encouraged him to enter the NFL draft in 1941, but he decided against it.

†¢ Dick Kenney: Kenney, who grew up in Hawaii and kicked for Michigan State in the 1960s, nailed a 47-yard field goal in the 1966 “Game of the Century” between the Spartans and Notre Dame. He appears to be the only barefoot kicker who hit the ball straight-on, instead of soccer-style. Yowch! There’s some good info on him in this old article from Time (which also features cool info on lots of other 1960s kickers). And according to this page on the Helmet Hut web site, Kenney “never had pro football aspirations simply because of his unusual kicking style, which was not allowed in the NFL” — odd, since the Eagles had courted Johnson Lau two decades earlier. I’ve asked Helmet Hut prexy Curtis Worrell if he can clarify this — I’ll post an update when I hear back from him.

†¢ Rob Hart: You might not realize that there was a barefoot kicker in the NFL just a few years ago. That would be Hart, who had a few cups of coffee with the Bucs and Dolphins in 2002 and 2004. He’s spent the rest of his career in NFL Europe.

†¢ Andrew Sullivan: Sullivan kicked for Yale until graduating in 2005. He’s also in the running for the Worst Logo Creep Ever Award: According to this article (which is a good overview of barefoot kicking in general), he drew a Nike swoosh onto his bare foot before each game, which his coach praised as an admirably “team-oriented” move. Pardon me while I go slit my wrists.

Uni Watch Holiday Schedule: We’ll have an open thread tomorrow (I’ll take care of it, John), but I’ll have a regular entry on Friday, and maybe one on the weekend as well. Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Good breakdown of MLS unis here (courtesy of T.J. Zaremba). … Nice history of the Capitals’ jerseys here (gold star to Kim Kolb). … Moises Alou has worn No. 18 throughout his career — with the Expos, Marlins, Astros, Cubs, and Giants, and in the World Baseball Classic. When he signed with the Mets earlier this week, Jose Valentin readily agreed to give up his number. So Alou’s Mets press conference looked like this. … Great article here about fast food, airline, and other corporate uniforms (courtesy of Dominic Litten). … This suddenly makes a lot more sense, in light of this. … Bill Hickman, chairman of the Society for American Baseball Research‘s Pictorial History Committee, has generously provided another photo of those odd Washington Senators uni numbers. … Holiday-themed note from Chris Donham: “Here’s something for people to look for during the 100th Easton-Phillipsburg high school football clash, which is being broadcast on ESPN2 at 9 a.m. on Thankgiving Day. The Easton Red Rovers are sporting throwback helmets this year. The football at the bottom of the white stripe has a number 9, which is in memory of Michael Cummings, who passed away on March 5, 2006. He was an 18-year-old junior quarterback on the Easton Area High football team.” More info and pics here and here. … Weird scene last night in Lawrence, as Kansas wore red alternate unis against Tennessee State, resulting in a red vs. blue game. … A big Uni Watch welcome to the new readers who’ve discovered this site via this MetaFilter link. Come on in — there’s plenty of beer in the fridge.

With the Civil War coming up, there’s a good link on oregonlive.com this morning involving a little trash talking centered around our favorite unis.

You really gotta put a disclaimer on the links to link Its way too early for me to seeing that suddenly…can’t wait for the ESPN.com article…am I first?

Since it’s that time of year, big thanks to Paul for continually giving us an entertaining read. And to everyone else for sharing their info as well.

beer in the fridge? Paul, we’ve been reading for 6 months and NOW you tell us you have been in the fridge…gee, now we’re definitely coming over!

Ya, I’ll be in New York this weekend anyway… when should I stop by?
Any special Thanksgiving NFL uni’s to report?
Boys and the kittens will be wearing theirs…My understanding is my phins won’t be…and the bucs never will…

Oh, wow! Inconspicuous Consumption looks like something I could get lost in for a long time. Paul, that column appears to be a “classic,” as they say.

The pictures from the KU-Tennessee State game lead me to wonder if the NCAA has any sort of rule about uniforms. It’s the NCAA — they must have a rule (probably tons of them). It appears that at least in basketball, all teams are required to do is wear contrasting color and that there is not a stipulation that one team wear a “light” color.

Does anyone out there have any insight on this?

To add to the coincidence I’m traveling from down here in Canada (the home of 3/4 major sports reigning MVP’s) to Texas to see the Texas-Texas A&M game tomorrow. Now I’m going to fixated on the A&M kicker for the whole game. Thanks.

Ok, link article just irritated me. Why they failed to mention the Marine Corps’ patented digital camo pattern, which came first after all, and mentioned the Army’s copied version is beyond me. Everyone wants to be one of us I suppose.

Getting off my Jarhead soapbox now. :)

I would love to go to that game. I’ve been trying to get tickets for years, but have been unsuccessful. I am quite obviously sleeping with the wrong people.

I guess my KC Chiefs won’t be wearing alternate unis. They have the same uni for decades, so, really, they always wear a throwback. Let’s just hope they never try link at home ever again.

Anyone else notice that CNNSI just posted a photo gallery on the link?

They just can’t compete with Paul, although give credit to his review of the Mets black unis…

It’s quite easy to get tickets to the Texas/aTm game.

All you have to do is donate $5000 to the Longhorn Foundation.

Paul McFadden, who played for Buddy Ryan’s

The MLS kit resource was nice, but the guy running it might want to include the kit of the newly-crowned champs on there. I’m just saying.

i really do miss the old TB Bucs orange uni’s.

    remember vince ferragamo’s link?

Given that the snap shows a Gaelic hurling match, a mismatched helmet might not matter at the end. It, along with the rest of the kit, will likely be covered in gore. ;)

That Namath mask was really from the late 50s or very early 60s – the equipment manager must have dug it out for him there toward the end of his career. He also wore that mask with the Rams the last year of his career.

Both the old cowcatcher Schutt masks and the Dungards are outlawed because the mask itself is screwed directly to the helmet and doesn’t flex like current ones attached by straps. The lack of flexability led to more neck injuries.

Andy, maybe that’s why I like it! Nice….

So Dallas and Detroit are going to wear throwbacks tomorrow, but Miami and Tampa aren’t? Thanksgiving is supposed to be throwback day for all teams playing. It just doesn’t seem right.

The NCAA basketball rules (Rule 3, Sec. 5, Art. 12) state that “Opposing team colors must be of contrasting colors,” and that the home team must wear its light kit and the away team wear its dark kit. It seems that A.R. 19 states that if the two teams have the same color kit the home team should wear its light kit, but that on neutral territory, the referees are to decide whether or not the uniforms worn are appropriately “contrasting.”

All of this doesn’t seem to make much sense in the case of the KU – Tennessee St game, since the game was in Lawrence. It seems that KU should have been wearing their white home unis, while Tennessee ST wore its away blue ones. How are the red alternates not considered “dark” uniforms? Shouldn’t the refs have made the KU players change to their white uniforms?

    Any thoughts?

I don’t believe the Bucs have ever worn their throwbacks since going to pewter and red, have they?

I have a creamsickle orange Doug Williams throwback that I may wear to Thanksgiving dinner just because.
Hey, most of you are guys. Why the useless button on the bottom of the suitcoat? It doesn’t really add anything aesthetically, and it’s not meant to be buttoned, so why bother?
There are lots of “useless” buttons throughout men’s and women’s clothing. Lots of shirts and blouses have a top button at the collar, even though they’re rarely if ever buttoned all the way to the top. Most men’s and women’s suit jackets have buttons on the sleeve cuffs, sometimes with faux-buttonhole stitching, but it’s rare that these are actually functional buttons with real buttonholes (and rarer still that anyone ever actually unbuttons them). The left-lapel buttonhole on a men’s suit jacket (the one sometimes used for a link) corresponds to a button that used to be common on the right lapel. Some men’s shirts still have a back collar button, a vestigal remnant from the days when collars were separate items that literally had to be buttoned onto the shirt. The bottom button of a vest is traditionally never buttoned. Men’s pants (including baseball pants!) often have button-thru rear pockets that are rarely if ever buttoned. Same goes for the upper-right buttons on double-breasted men’s suit jackets.

What’s this all about? Style. Buttons look cool, and they help to define and segment space. If you’ve ever seen a man wearing a one-button jacket, it becomes obvious why jackets normally have two or three buttons, even if they aren’t all used.

Bill Cowher is linkas saying he will not wear a suit.

The bottom button almost always serves as a guide. When you leave the bottom button undone the jacket fits properly. When you button all of the buttons on a suit jacket it tends to bunch up around the chest and shoulders, I think del rio had this problem.

I read somewhere that Napoleon had buttons put on the sleeves of his men’s jackets to keep them from wiping their noses on them.

Just to clarify, I don’t mind the Chiefs in white/white, but it should never happen at home. The Chiefs have ALWAYS worn red at home, and it should stay that way. When they came out in all white for the opening game at home this year, everyone here in KC was mad. Bad start for Herm Edwards. Lose the game and Trent Green for half the season. I don’t think the all whites will make an appearance at Arrowhead for a long time.

Paul, thanks for the comprehensive reply. You are correct, of course, that there are numerous examples of frivolous buttons in clothing.

I read somewhere that Napoleon had buttons put on the sleeves of his men’s jackets to keep them from wiping their noses on them.
I actually recall reading a few years ago that ornamental sleeve buttons originated in the late 19th century when Queen Victoria was visiting a Royal Navy warship, the HMS Blazer. For the Queen’s visit the captain of the ship had his men dress in navy blue serge coats and to keep them from wiping their faces on the sleeves (a common practice for sailors who had misplaced their neck scarves), the captain ordered that brass buttons be sewn on the sleeves.

Both stories are interesting, but I get the feeling that the actual origination of this is far less interesting.

Yes, and even earlier both teams employed a version of the single-wing, and that made for an interesting game to watch. You never knew which back would eventually end up as the ultimate ball-carrier.

Yes exactly. Back in the 60s there were not as many uni combos and I doubt much thought went into the color pants for each game. But these days in all sports players and coaches want to have a say in every aspect of their unis every game. Baseball more so than football but football too with respect to pants. Don’t forget the Colts were blue-pants during Marchibroda years, Dolphins wore aqua pants during the late Shula years. Someone had to decide to go back to white.

forgive me if this has been mentioned previously, because it’s new to me.

since ESPN is showing a bunch of highlights related to Thanksgiving, they’ve shown the Flutie Hail Mary play a bunch. But having seen this play for years (as a UM fan no less), I just noticed that nobody ever told Flutie how to put his chinstrap on properly.
As you can see link, Flutie was wearing his chinstrap over the side of his facemask, a doofus move that makes his football abilities even more improbable.

Later in his career, when there were professionals who handled his equipment, Flutie link his problem.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as dorky looking done by someone as well-respected as Flutie is.

    Wow. That’s awful!

Matthew S., thanks for adding another great sleeve button story. According to this, however, neither can be true:

    link

    The pertinent paragraph:

There is no reason to believe that Frederick the Great (ruler of Prussia from 1740 to 1786) caused buttons to be sewn onto his soldier’s clothing to prevent them from wiping their noses on their sleeves. Though it is a good story, earlier paintings of men wearing buttons on their sleeves make this fanciful explanation difficult to accept. The coat sleeve is unbuttoned in a painting by Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin, (French 1699-1779, “The House of Cards, c. 1735); and a man wearing a coat with many buttons as fasteners to a close-fitting lower sleeve (Franz Hals, Dutch c. 1580-1666, “Portrait of an Officer, c. 1640) show functional usage well before that date.

Damn. I like the ‘no wiping your nose on your sleeve’ explanation.

IIRC (and I covered the team then), they wore the blue pants in the 1995 home opener, played horribly and lost to Cincinnati and put them away.

I think Joe Willie donned the Schutt cowcatcher right after the supe’ victory. Later on, in the twilight of his career he used another 3 bar mask that is more squared off and appears to be a older brother of the Marino/aikman/Kelly 3 bar mask.

Al, you should recheck Helmet Hut – those were Dungard masks, not Schutt. Also, I can’t see the Ferrigamo photo (blocked where I’m at right now) but I primarily remember him wearing the same model that Csonka wore, not the smaller version worn by Bob Griese and Terry Bradshaw (although Bradshaw switched to the version that mounted all the way at the top of the helmet by the time they made their first Super Bowl).
Thanks John, I was operating strictly on memory… bad move, uh?
I share your assumption that Vince was wearing the Czonka model during the Rams/Steelers game. funny, I always think back to Bradshaw’s career and consider the shift from the small Dungard to the more modern facemask as the ‘demarkation point’in the Steelers from a smashmouth team to a more dynamic passing team…. I think it’s great that Rob Hart got a namecheck. I followed his career because he is from my hometown (Southampton, England). Rob still holds the career scoring record in NFL Europe. Because he was not American and “National” players (as they are known) are guaranteed a certain number of roster spots, he stayed in the league from 1998 (with the England Monarchs) to 2004 (with the Scottish Claymores) and scored 361 points (that’s in a 10 game season, by the way), all of them barefooted.

Few US players stay in NFL Europe for more than a couple of years because after that they either find a job in the NFL (like Kurt Warner, Jake Delhomme, Adam Vinatieri etc.) or realise that they’re never going to make it.

So I’m watching Sportscenter, and they’re showing a Texas Tech basketball practice. Bob Knight is wearing a St. Louis Cardinals pullover, and prominently displayed is a Nike swoosh. That probably won’t sit well with Tech’s uniform supplier (adidas, in case you were wondering).

Back around 1980 Tulane had a barefoot kicker…and he kicker straight-on! I saw him when they played at Georgia Tech.
