Tuck Rule, NBA Version

bucks.jpg

Those purple unis aren’t the only thing the Bucks will be leaving behind this season. That news comes courtesy of Trail Blazers play-by-play man Mike Barrett, who has a blog and recently discussed some of the rulebook changes in the NBA this season. Here’s the pertinent passage:

Players can no longer come to the scorer’s table to check in with their jerseys untucked. On the floor, of course, they’ve always had to keep shirts tucked in. Those full-length leg tights that got popular last season are no longer allowed. And sweatbands may be worn only on the wrists, not on the upper arm or forearm. I thought of Kobe when I heard this one, because he always wears one on his bicep. Well, he used to. That won’t be allowed anymore. Players also won’t be allowed wear those rubber bands, which have become so popular, on their wrists. [This is apparently a reference to Livestrong-ish bands. — PL] I’m not trying to put you to sleep here, but just thought you might be interested in some of this stuff.

Note that last bit about sleep inducement, like he’s basically apologizing for talking about uni-related stuff. Is that pathetic or what? We’ve seen this kind of nonsense before, of course, usually from broadcasters who find themselves discussing uniforms on the air and then adopt that mock-ironic tone that basically says, “Ho ho ho, don’t take this too seriously, because I certainly don’t, ha ha ha.” My message to all these clowns: Either talk loud and proud or put a sock in it (striped, natch) and leave the uni chatter to the professionals.

Stormy Weather: Uni Watch South Pole bureau chief Eric Bennett and I had driven about 80% of the way to Shea Stadium last night — through a driving rain the whole way — when, to our great relief, we heard that the game had been called. So we turned around, stopped in Rego Park to have dinner at my favorite kosher Uzbeki kebab house (menu, more menu, typical fare), and then headed back to Brooklyn, where I noticed the following while watching the Tigers/A’s game:

†¢ Placido Polanco’s got something written under his brim.

†¢ Polanco also appears to have a black cap button (or maybe no button at all, tough to be sure), instead of the orange button worn by everyone else.

†¢ Add Fernando Rodney to our roster of players with undershirt tag issues.

As for our tickets, they’re good for tomorrow’s game. Weather’s supposed to be a lot colder that day, which among other things will put a serious crimp in my plans to wear a Ditch the Black T-shirt — dang.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Gotta assume that the Mets and A’s will both start wearing some sort of memorial patch or armband for Cory Lidle, since he pitched for both of those teams. Haven’t heard anything definite on this front, though. … Case Western is planning a throwback weekend in February (thanks to Todd McGuinness). … Wyoming will be wearing throwbacks — presumably similar to the ones they wore last year — this weekend (with thanks to Chad Smith). … Soccer note from A.J. Zydzik, who writes: “The German national team had a European championship qualifier against Slovakia on Wednesday and they broke out the long-sleeve jerseys, which, to my horror, have mismatched sleeves.” … Speaking of soccer, Mark Lockwood sent along this article, which includes the following passage regarding UK player Wayne Rooney: “Rooney appears to have become the latest high-profile casualty of the curse of Nike, wherein the greater the claims made in adverts for a player’s world-altering abilities, the more likely he is to pick up a long-term injury or suffer a drastic shortfall of form. ‘This is my year,’ Rooney proclaims in the advertisement for the partly reinforced carpet slippers that go by the name of his endorsed football boots these days. ‘And I’m not just going to hit the target, I’m going to destroy it.’ Get back to us on that one, Wayne.”

The “latest” in the Nike curse? Are you serious? For every “cursed” player in Nike campaigns, there are a dozen MVPs, world champions, and once in a lifetime athletes. How’s that curse on Tiger Woods? Or Michael Jordan? Or any of a thousand other athletes? And for the record, Wayne Rooney’s suspensions and subsequent missed games caused his TEMPORARY drop in form. He has been with Nike for a while now, and he was playing fine before the suspension. Mark, I’ll bet you are a Cubs fan and you blame Bartman for the Cubs’ terrible “luck.”

Do you remember when the Marquette basketball team in the ’70s had uniforms designed to be worn untucked? I can’t find a stinkin’ photo, though.

Wow — the last thing I expected to see today was a mention of my alma mater (Case Western). For those of you who don’t know (probably all of you), Case is the amalagamation of a fairly large number of universities, most notably the Mather College for Women (hence the women’s team wearing the yellow jerseys), Adelbert College, Case Institute of Technology, and Western Reserve University. The last merger between CIT and WRU happened in the late 60’s/early 70’s, creating what was known as CWRU (though they now prefer to go by “Case”, much to the dismay of WRU alums). As such, there have to be a large number of throwbacks to choose from. It’s too bad they can’t do this on a weekend where more of the school’s teams are playing.

If you get a chance, play a game with the school’s logo. The symbol is supposed to represent the unity in community (my words). See how long it takes you to see the link.

That German alternate or change jersey (soccer is usually separated by primaray and alternate as opposed to home and away) was the listed one for the World Cup.

It’s a standard adidas template, worn in the US by MLS’s link.

Though the one arm has been changed in the German shirt for the mismatched sleeve ugliness. But to me the most awkward part of the shirt is the off center collar. Also seen here in the MLS All-Star link which is thrown off by the symmetry of the MLS All-Star logo and the team logo of the individual player.

Here’s a link of the 1960 University of Minnesota throwbacks they’ll be wearing in their game on 10/21.

They’re also up for auction link.

I like how CWRU has to change their entire color scheme in order to have a Throwback weekend. The 2nd set with Case in script are very nice – wish there was a picture of the back of the jersey.

i was listening to the coach rod radio show last night and wvu will be wearing blue jerseys with gold pants this weekend against syracuse. this is a more traditional look for us, even though it hurts to say that considering the terrible nike templates we wear nowadays. how has uni watch let those terrible unis slide?

and another thing, rodriguez said “the players said they wanted to wear blue shirts and gold pants.” this leads me to believe that players pick the unis everyweek. has anyone heard of other teams doing this?

    Exactly .7 seconds!!

Hey Paul- Are those kebobs, or are you slowly introducing us to another link who’s unis and equipment we’ll need to keep an eye on?

The New Orleans Saints reportedly will be wearing new uniforms next season. Head coach Sean Payton applied with the NFL for a uniform change this season but the NFL requires at least a one year heads-up. Any ideas or inside scoop as to what the Saints will be wearing next season? I wish they would go with a single black helmet stripe or do away with the helmet stripe entirely; or maybe add a contrasting trim color to the uniform.

I think they should leave them – just go back to wearing black at home. There’s nothing wrong with the unis they have, they’re still classics.

I have faith in Walt, but it is going to be one of his tougher offseasons. We could be looking at a new 2B, SS, CF and probably 3 new starters. I wouldn’t mind them bringing back Belliard and Edmonds at a reduced salary, but we better have a good backup OF other than So in case/when Jimmy gets hurt again.

I am going to enjoy this postseason though, and keep my fingers crossed we win at least one game since I have NLCS game 5 tickets.
This was posted from yesterday, just now getting a chance to respond.

I completely agree with you about finding players at that position. As much as I love Eckstein, we need a better arm at short. Ronnie has done a good job since he came over. As for Edmonds, I would absolutely hate to see someone else in center next year. Jim E. has been mine and my brother’s favorite player for awhile now. He just needs to get healthy, I know he’s getting older, but he’ll be OK. I have faith in Walt to get the position players sewn up, the thing I’m worried about is the pitching next year.

Oh and if you need someone to go to Game 5, I’ll drive down from Chicago!!

    GO CARD’S!!!

    Paul,
Is that place open late, looks great might check it out after the game tonight. Was planning on going to Park Side in Corona.

WVU’s current sartorial abominations are a sad departure from the classy, simple design worn for most of the Don Nehlen era. Like Oregon, WVU sports a handsome, instantly recognizable helmet… but from the neck down, they’re a disaster, one of the ten worst uniforms in Division I.

Couple great local stories about Lidle. One, he was nicknamed “Snacks” because he loved junk food so much. And then, he had a twin brother, so once he had his brother put on a uniform, and go down to warm up when the pitching coach asked him to, presumably while he hid in the clubhouse!

Not sure how late Cheburechnaya is open. Their address and phone number (and a full review by my pal Rob’t Sietsema) are available link.

I think (the Saints) should leave them – just go back to wearing black at home. There’s nothing wrong with the unis they have, they’re still classics.

I kinda agree with you, except for the helmets… I am a fan of traditional style uniforms. However, the helmet stripes on the current uniform bothers me, particularly with the black jerseys. The helmet was designed to coordinate with the original uniforms which had identical stripes on the pants, like Green Bay and Dallas, for example. As the uniform evolved over the years the pants stripes changed but not the helmet stripes. The Saints black jerseys have gold numerals with a thin white trim and their gold paints have a broad solid black stripe. IMO the white helmet stripe looks out of place with the black jerseys. If the Saints kept basically the same uniform I think it would look better with a single black helmet stripe (such as Oakland’s) or no stripe at all. BTW a few years ago Jim Haslett applied to the NFL to change the Saints helmets to black but was turned down, presumably because there were already several teams, including their division rival Atlanta, with black helmets.

Not to worry Paul, you’re favortie Uni Watch South Pole Bureau Chief is prepared for friday nights game with a couple of classic blue and orange knit hats from fan appriciation days of yore.
Just don’t forget to bring that bag of malted milk balls

Response to Post # 4 by Kim and the topic of the German shirts in general –

Actually, the German shirt pictured is not the same template as the Houston Dynamo. Believe it or not their link is actually the same template as their link, they’ve just colored the panels of the shirt differently. Whereas the Dynamo’s template has that very odd neckline, the Germany shirts have the same, symmetrical neckline. The Dynamo template is also worn by link, link, and link.

Also, in response to the mention in the blog about the shirt, the fact that it is long sleeved is kind of irrelevent. The sleeves are mismatched because it is the design of the shirt (for better or for worse) and has nothing to do with the fact that the shirt is long sleeved. You can get the shirt with short sleeves or long sleeves.

Did anyone see the “Stunna Shades” that Milton Bradley was wearing in the field last night? I can’t seem to find a picture of it but I think they are a major improvement over the link style. Also I thought that link were not allowed or is that only for pitchers?

I love seeing the NBA take control of some uni-related issued. Why can’t MLB show some ‘nads and ban slacks?

    wow.

i’m both excited and nervous about ANY changes to the Saints uniforms…

they are one of my alltime favorites. the throwback ones i love and the kinda older ones with the LA state outline on the pants i love, too…

my only problem with it is its an OBVIOUS attempt to grab more cash.

first there was the Reggie Bush #5
then the REAL Reggie Bush uni.
so i guess now that everyone has one or the other they are going to need the NEW Reggie Bush uni…

    ugh.

i really hope they incorporate some Katrina memory, be it the date or something, in the uni, ala the Bears and the Halas letters on the sleeve.

maybe that’d be in bad taste as they try to rebuild, though? huh. not sure. i’ll think more on that.

As for Edmonds, I don’t see the Cards picking up his 8 figure option. Hopefully there won’t be hard feelings and they can work out a cheaper alternative. I’m not sure what free agents are out there that would take his place and we really have no trade bait that would fetch us a CF.

The rotation will be the big question mark after Carpenter and Reyes.

As for Game 5, my wife got first dibs and she is pumped about going. My 2 brothers were praying she said no.
Also I thought that link were not allowed or is that only for pitchers?
That is only for pitchers, as they could cause a distraction to the hitter, just like a white glove or jewelry.

I remember when the Saints introduced the Louisiana state outline on their uniforms… Bum Phillips was the coach. At the time, the Saints were flirting with relocating to Jacksonville so one the local television sportscasters suggested that the Saints apply the Louisiana state emblem to their uniforms with velcro just in case. :>)

Couldn’t find the “untucked” MU unis from the early 70s but I did find link These were the prototypes for the “hashmark” unis worn by Cleveland during the Jim Chones era. Sadly they’re in black and white or you could see the San Diego-collegiate blue, the yellow and black hashmarks on the side and the upward-arching MARQUETTE in all their glory.

In an early version of what a lot of schools have now with Nike, Under Armor and the rest, Marquette was the “test school”: for Medalist Sand-Knit, which also did the famous Astros rainbow unis. Among the MU classics were the bumblebees (black with horizontal yellow pinstripes) and the untucked, which featured both the team name and the player name below the numbers, just to make zure you had a reason to untuck the shirt.

And just to make this post way longer than it should be, link Marquette’s 1977 NCAA champs, taken at a Milwaukee auto museum.

My memory may be playing tricks on me, but I seem to recall that at least a couple of basketball players (I can’t recall who, or even if it was college or NBA) wore ordinary rubber bands (the office-supply variety) around their wrists. Also, in response to the mention in the blog about the shirt, the fact that it is long sleeved is kind of irrelevent. The sleeves are mismatched because it is the design of the shirt (for better or for worse) and has nothing to do with the fact that the shirt is long sleeved.

Let’s not be a Nike apologist, everyone that’s anyone in World Football knows that Nike is a ‘johnny come lately’ onto the world football scene and can’t hold adidas’ jock when it comes to the beautiful game. Nike should continue outfitting clowns like Oregon Univ. and those overrated fools from Jogo Bonito and let the rest of the footballing community alone and stop inflicting all those stupid cookie cutter kits that only appeal to silly short attention spanned 12 years old.

Hmmm… USA, Mexico, Holland, Brasil, Australia, Korea did not sport identical kits just previous to 2006? No one doubts that making an imprint in a community takes time, what I have a problem with is Nike’s bull in a china shop approach. I don’t have a problem with that tact in American sporting events and traditions, but the swoosh attempts to make it’s imprint on the world game in the same brash manner as a un-named clueless fool that has set back this nation 2 decades.

WVU’s current sartorial abominations are a sad departure from the classy, simple design worn for most of the Don Nehlen era. Like Oregon, WVU sports a handsome, instantly recognizable helmet… but from the neck down, they’re a disaster, one of the ten worst uniforms in Division I.

it really is sad. we had one of the best unis back in the 80’s and 90’s (think michigan plus some white trim). our helmet is still top notch, and even though i have an admitted bias, i would still rank it in the top five helmets in college football. the thing thats even more sad is that we had nike uniforms back in the late nehlen days and still kept the classic design. seems to me that rich rod is another example of a coach wanting to put his own stamp on the progam. and thats not something i particularly have a problem with all the time, but he could have at least stayed away from the nike defaults because now we just look like cal with more illegible numbering.

I’ve been obsessive about soccer jerseys for as long as I can remember, I’ve collected them for about 12 years, and I design them for fun in my spare time. And whether they’ve been around forever or not, I don’t think Adidas kits hold a candle to Nike’s. I’m not willing to write Nike a free pass for things like Oregon’s football unis (though if you take off the cross hatch pattern, they’re not that bad) or for team USA’s basketball uniforms. But as far as the world of soccer is concerned, Nike is staying true to soccer’s roots, and Adidas has lost the plot. link and link are things of beauty. link and link are an embarrassment to the sport.

Geez, eveything I want to say has already been said.

Thanks Austin Gray (#20) for clearing that German jersey thing up. I was about to do that myself.

Miguel (#41), I couldn’t have said it better myself. A arauz, Maybe Nike does that with such confidence because they have the quality products now to back it up. And yes, I think that comparison is a stretch.

Get a sweet Nike dot-matrix long sleeve undershirt to wear beneath your DTB gear. Duh! Actually it looks like those might not be available to us mortals quite yet. There’s always this, though. (Also available in purple and black.)

I’ve seen the dot-matrix sleeves in Nike Town stores..not sure if they’re in regular sports stores yet…Paul, you’ve got plenty of time to get “Ditch the Black” embroidered on a hoodie or even on the back of a Mets MLB jacket…

As such, there have to be a large number of throwbacks to choose from. It’s too bad they can’t do this on a weekend where more of the school’s teams are playing.
Actually it was a “federation” between the schools, and not a merger per se. ;)
Yeah, CWRU has had some unique mascots in the past — the Rough Riders and the Red Cats. A couple years ago there was talk of changing away from the Spartans and to something else..There was talk of the “Red Riders” as it harkens back to the day of the two schools, but apparently they just updated the Spartan. The XC team does use Red Riders as its unofficial nickname. On a personal level, I’d like them to do throwbacks for the swim team — use those old suits with the shoulder straps from the 30s and 40s.

I agree with the above comments, what really made me sad this year was the denver broncos-like “swoosh” strip on the side of the pants. That was not there last year. The blue on blue also doesn’t sit well with me, but as long as the ‘eers keep winning, I’ll try and keep my mouth shut.

80’s and 90’s unis were great, but there was a while in the late 90’s when WVU adopted the Dallas Coyboys number font, which didn’t make me real happy either.

I see where you’re going with the “shape of the state” thing, but have you actually looked at the state? The northern pan-handle would be kinda tough to work into the logo.

At least our overall unis are still better than Syracuse. I was watching their game last weekend with some non-uni watchers, and one of the guys actually said, “those are horrible, I though the color on the TV was messed up, but those are actually thier uniforms!”

Yeah, I’ve looked at the state (I make maps for a living). I think it could be done.

i gotta admit i’m a little surprised at some of the responses for favorite helmets. i was expecting some of the classics (ND, michigan), but hear names like orgegon thrown around in the same sentence is sort of a shock. granted i do like the orgeon helmet, but i would never consider it in the same group as classics just because it has only been around since the late 90’s (i think).

i remember a great story not too long ago, i cant remember where it was or who wrote it, but it ran down all the bowl games in the recent past and showed that teams that had stuck with a particular helmet design for over 20 years had a much higher winning percentage. anyone else remember this?

so i guess now that everyone has one or the other they are going to need the NEW Reggie Bush uni…

    ugh.

i really hope they incorporate some Katrina memory, be it the date or something, in the uni, ala the Bears and the Halas letters on the sleeve.

maybe that’d be in bad taste as they try to rebuild, though? huh. not sure. i’ll think more on that.
Personally, if I were Saints fan (and who isn’t at this point), I would be nervous about this. Just look at how most of the recent uni redesigns have gone: link, link, link, link… all atrocious. None of them can hold a candle to link – helmet stripe or not.

If they start messing with them, recent history says it’s going to get ugly.
The recent changes are not that bad except for the side panels on the jersey. If you could remove that like the Jaguars did years ago you’re left with nice uniform. Except the Lions only added black and it was not really necessary.

    Yes.

Ever since Nike (allegedly) made Ronaldo play in the World Cup Final (2002?) every football (soccer) player who has been the focus of Nike’s advertising campaigns has been less successful after than before.

    … and LETS GO METS.
To say that Nike made Ronaldo play in the World Cup Final is the most ignorant and ridiculous thing I’ve heard in a long time. Maybe, just maybe, he just wanted to play because it’s the freaking WORLD CUP FINAL. You know, the one that BILLIONS of people would love to play in. Oh yeah, and forget the fact that he scored both goals to win the game. Yeah, did Nike FORCE him to do that too?

Well, shee-ut. You guys have been very busy today. Work productivity must be way down.

First off, Paul, you are the creator of the Ditch the B**** campaign—didn’t that score you a sweatshirt or a hoodie? Although, truth to be told, I can’t see you in a hoodie.

Second, those Nike undershirts are just nasty. They have the ‘bra’ because of the enlarged boobs the guys who wear them have from all the steroid use.

Wow. That was a really convoluted sentence. Sorry, guys, but my flu-fogged brain isn’t working very well right now.

Third, Natron, when I saw the Gophers throwback, my first thought was, “Wow, they’ve had that huge swoosh all this time?” Thank you for clearing that up.

Fourth, you know what’s great about this board? So many differing opinions, but all united by our obsessive uni watching. It’s a beautiful thing.

This Kumbayah moment brought to you by Kodak. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled bickering.

Ummmm, they never sold a #5 Reggie Bush jersey?!

I think all the solid color helmets are in a class by themselves. Ohio State, Boston College, Penn State, Notre Dame…all great.

I agree with the popular choices of SC, Oregon, Michigan, especially Texas.

    Some underappreciated helmets include:
    Virginia (good colors, crossed swords)
Michigan State (green & white uncommon D-1 colors that work)
Oklahoma (the O and U fit together nicely)
    Texas A&M (great logo)

For every “cursed” player in Nike campaigns, there are a dozen MVPs, world champions, and once in a lifetime athletes. How’s that curse on Tiger Woods? Or Michael Jordan? Or any of a thousand other athletes? And for the record, Wayne Rooney’s suspensions and subsequent missed games caused his TEMPORARY drop in form. He has been with Nike for a while now, and he was playing fine before the suspension. Mark, I’ll bet you are a Cubs fan and you blame Bartman for the Cubs’ terrible “luck.”
It’s a soccer-specific curse. Witness Ronaldinho’s performance in the WC this year while he was all over the telly in Nike’s “Joga Bonito” ads. Plus, Rooney had the foot injury to come back from right before the WC.
They have had a link alternate in the past… its pretty hideous…

I must say that I absolutely LOVE that the Saints decided to use link as a patch on the jerseys this season. And I would LOVE to see the logo incorporated back into the unis link.

Like I stated in an earlier post, the Saints GM – Mickey Loomis – stated on local New Orleans radio that the team will NOT have any changes to the uniforms in the near future. That being said, if they did ever change I would NVER want to see linklink!! Stupid Mike Ditka!!!

anyone have anything on those two points… pictures ?

Thanks. I just always thought ownership handled something as huge as a logo or uniform change, not a head coach. As if coaches don’t have enough on their plate.

Technically speaking, I think it is the “team” that requests a uniform change rather than a specific person within an organization.

    First off….GO CARDINALS …
I don’t understand why N.O. would want to change the Saints uni’s… I have always thought they were some of the best looking in the NFL. I also liked the black pants with the white jersey’s and the gold helmets they used to where. Looked pretty cool to me. I don’t think you will see them changing anyting on that uniform…OH…except the Louisiana state logo to California when they move to LA in a year or so. :)

It’s a soccer-specific curse. Witness Ronaldinho’s performance in the WC this year while he was all over the telly in Nike’s “Joga Bonito” ads. Plus, Rooney had the foot injury to come back from right before the WC.

Oh! It’s a SOCCER SPECIFIC curse! THAT makes it a whole lot less ridiculous! Are you kidding?!…I guess leading your team to win La Liga and the Champions League in the same year doesn’t count against the “curse?”

He won La Liga and the Champions league before appearing in the add campaign. After the campaign in the WC and in the ensuing La Liga season he has been very out of sorts compared to earlier. Another player who had the same thing happen is Zlatan Ibrahimovitch who plays for Sweden and AC Milan. He appeared in the Nike add campaign and did a disappearing act in the WC and his serie A campaign hasn’t been too successful either. Also there’s the matter of Landon Donovan and Damarcus Beasley who were featured in tons of Nike ads for the US and they were our to worst disapointments of the tourney. Now Donovan’s team the LA Galaxy didn’t even make the play offs. I’d call it a soccer specific curse, kind of like Madden curse and football.
Finally I’d like to point out that the 94 Germany jersey is possibly the greatest Jersey ever made. You will need to scroll down on the page slightly. These are jerseys that people either love or they hate and I would love to get one of these. I probably formated the link wrong. We’ll see

That gold with the purple face mask and the tiger on the side. (Not to mention the white stripe on the top matches the white jerseys they prefer to wear). By the way, does anyone know why teams, LSU is the only one i can think of at the moment, only buckle their chinstraps on the bottom 2 snaps? The only time an LSU player has the high hook up chin strap is when it is one of those with the 3 snaps. Just wanted to know if it was for safety purposes or something.
I’m a stickler for helmets that don’t change much over time. I think that LSU has one of the best overall uniforms in all of college football. And using a helmet that hasn’t changed since it’s introduction in 1977 (except for the coloration of the facemask to purple from gray – and the one time white helmet) DEFINITELY gives the Tigers extra points in my book!
But yet you have Nebraska’s helmet in the bottom five IA helmets and they haven’t changed since 1970(except for the facemask, of course). Simple, but a fine helmet indeed.
Really, though, I agree with your list other than that. Different helmet tastes are (hopefully) welcomed.

I will stand up and say that, in general, I like Nike. I understand and (to a point) agree with the branding issues that Paul often brings up, but from a strictly design standpoint, I think they get it right more often than they get it wrong. If anything, I would say they have improved in the last five years. I have always hated the Broncos unis, and I don’t generally like the template they use for it. But the newest Nike college football uniforms with the piping – Clemson, Missouri, Arizona, Illinois – look pretty sharp. They are clean and modern without looking garish (see any uniform the NFL has designed in the last three years).

Nike’s college basketball uniforms are also solid, and their international soccer uniforms are some of the cleanest, sharpest, and most reverent uniforms currently available. Do they step out of line? Sure. I think Oregon’s cross-hatch things are idiotic, and I think the halftone pattern on the MLB undershirts unnecessary. Overall, though, I think they get more than a passing grade.

I respectfully disagree. I don’t think it’s in anyone’s best interest for teams to look like other teams with the exception of color. For example, U of Arizona looks exactly like Miami just blue and red. It’s kind of like MS Paint where you click on the bucket and change the colors in one fell swoop. What’s puzzling is that not all teams subscribe to the template thinking, e.g USC. Does the conversation go “want to look like Miami?” “um, sure.” or “no thanks.” What I do like about Nike is that they try to make fabrics, unis, equipment that is better for the players and the game. The Oregon unis, while hideous, incorporate lots of these features. (being in Tucson the water cooled jersey on the sideline seems like a good idea).
feel free to hand back any and all of my 2 cents.

I agree with this Mets fan. I have many gripes about Nike, and this is a big one. Players are playing for a school—not for Team Nike. It’s sad when a uniform is more recognizable as a Nike uni than as fill-in-the-blank university uni.

It was even worse in tennis for the US Open when several Nike players wore the same outfit. They aren’t the only offender, but they are the most well-known.

    Break up the hegemony already!

Amen. You go girl. I think you captured my thinking more concisely than I could ever have.
I ‘ve been playing soccer for 35 years now, it’s always been adidas (except for a pair of Pumas -which I’ll ignore)and the one time I picked up a pair of Nikes’ they were 1. expensive ($135 for 1995) and 2. crap. ON the apparel front: when they first got into the market, they distinguished themselves by introducing clean, uncluttered garments but that has evolved into the busy, look at me stuff we see today. (I’m generalizing, of course.). I know I jumped off the deep end with the ‘can’t hold the jock’ business, and I should care about market shares, but I don’t. All I know is that i’ve been playing a long time & and what my teammates and friends tell me.
