Division Series Roundup

tigers.jpg

There was some weird stuff going on in the various Division Series, and I’m not just talking about the Yankees going down so meekly. The biggest problem involved sleeves. For starters, as several readers noted, the blue sleeve trim on the Dodgers’ road jersey was missing from J.D. Drew’s uni during Games 1 and 2 of L.A.’s series against the Mets. Actually, it was missing for longer than that, as evidenced by this shot from September 29th. Drew had the proper trim, however, on September 27th.

Then there was Eric Chavez. As Joel Dunn and Monte Bogatz point out, Oakland’s “Holy Toledo” memorial patch for broadcaster Bill King was missing from Chavez’s sleeve during Game 3 of the A’s/Twins series (and during the postgame celebration). Just as with Drew, this glitch appears to predate the postseason: Chavez’s sleeve was patch-free at least as far back as September 22nd (although he was properly accessorized on September 16th).

Maybe Chavez discussed this with Twins backstop Joe Mauer when he came up to bat. Because as Ray McCormick points out, the Twins’ “34” memorial sleeve patch for Kirby Puckett was missing from Mauer’s right sleeve during Game 2 of the series (but it was present and accounted for in Games 1 and 3).

In other Division Series developments:

• The weather in Detroit for Game 4 of the Tigers/Yanks series was cold enough for the umps to allow Jeremy Bonderman to blow on his hand. So why was Bonderman wearing a Cool Base jersey?

• Footwear guru Mark Mihalik observes, “Pudge Rodriguez pulled a mid-game cleat change in Game 3. In the 2nd inning he wore these (which I should add are Verdero cleats, which nobody else wears, as far as I know), but later in the game he switched to the awful Nikes shown here.”

• Endy Chavez may have unwittingly pioneered a new ritual: the rally sock. Chavez was doing a bit of pant and/or sock adjustment during Paul LoDuca’s at-bat in the 8th inning of Game 3. When LoDuco singled in a run, Chavez perked up, jumped to his feet, and partied hard — all with his right calf exposed — before returning to the bench to complete his sartorial maneuvers.

• Great catch by Clark Farrand, who noticed that one end of the little tagging barb (yes, that’s the official term) was still stuck in Aaron Heilman’s cap when he pitched the 8th inning on Friday night.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Amusing article here about Washington State’s recent alternate unis (with thanks to Jerry Gardner). … Glenn Stern passed along this amazing shot from 1964, showing two UNC hoops players wearing uni-numbered stirrups! Dig the real belt on the shorts, too. … Speaking of stirrups, there’s plenty of them on display on the set of the film The Bronx Is Burning — click through this image gallery (with thanks to Matt Edwards). … Admirably detail-oriented article here about the U.S. Army’s new uniforms. … OK, so you already knew European hockey uniforms were pretty wack. But it turns out that the players are nothing compared to the officials! (Kudos to AJ Brandt.) … This does not bode well for America’s future (thanks, but no thanks, to Jeff Stephens). … Jeff Van Gundy is blaming Yao Ming’s foot problems on his shoes — and, specifically, on Reebok (with thanks to Kevin Gee for the tip). … Bryan Redemske notes that the world of competitive field hockey appears to have little if any uniformity when it comes to footwear. “Wear what ya brung,” says Redemske, who then adds: “I don’t know what kind of shoes are in this photo. Not steel-toed, though.” … Longtime Uni Watch pal John Darnielle (a.k.a. the Mountain Goats) notes that the symbol inscribed under Billy Wagner’s brim “bears a resemblance to the word ‘Om’ in Sanskrit.” Why do I think this is just a coincidence? … Michal Rozsival’s name was misspelled on Saturday night. … We all know Nikolai Valuev is a very large man. So the ads on his trunks looked even bigger than usual during his fight two nights ago against Monte Barrett (who, incidentally, wore pink gloves, which will be auctioned off to promote breast cancer research, although maybe research into dementia pugilistica might be more appropriate). … According to this item in yesterday’s New York Post, Isiah Thomas will be wearing an autism-awareness pin while coaching the Knicks this season. Please make your own really obvious joke here. … Genius catch by Big Ed in yesterday’s Comments section, noting that the top of Terrell Owens’s facemask yesterday had only one bar, instead of his usual two-bar design. … Give it up for the Coolidge Colts of Washington, D.C., who have the coolest high school football socks ever (big thanks to Michael Starghill Jr.).

Did anyone think that Cal’s uniforms would be even more offensive than Oregon’s when the played Saturday night? Yikes!

    PAUL,
first off, thank you very much for acknowledging me in the blog today..i’ve been an avid fan of yours since the early Page 2 days…i’ve always had an eye for detail, especially when related to sports!! again, thanks…i only wish i wasn’t way down in Florida so i could attend more BBQ’s and the like in NY!!!

secondly, the Cal/Oregon game had my attention the whole night..i am a bit of a Duck fan…the loss for Oregon goes to show you that they should be wearing yellow themselves time and again..they have NOT worn any article of yellow this season!! no helmet (still being developed), jersey, or pant!! Yellow is the key, look at how Cal played!

    Paul,
I don’t think Endy was doing any type of pant/ sock maintenance. Endy had slid into 2nd. on a force out (or double play, i don’t recall) in the previous inning and limped off into the dugout & was seen conferring w/ Met’s training staff. He then proceeded to hike his pants up and maybe just aired out the ‘sting’ … I expected to see ice strapped to it, but i never noticed any.

Unfortunately, there are some false stirrups in that Bronx is Burning gallery. Note picture 3, the guy running in the middle. There’s clear space between the end of his “stirrup” and beginning of his cleat. This may presumably be elastic in the bottom of the stirrup (especially given how high those things are riding), but it rings false to me.

I kind of wish you would’ve cropped the field hockey pic to waist and below. That chick with the mouthguard almost made me choke on my bagel.

Anyone else see the absolutely awful undershirts the StL. Cardinals had on during their celebration last night? The top part was red and the bottom was gray. It was awful.
Anyone else see the absolutely awful undershirts the StL. Cardinals had on during their celebration last night? The top part was red and the bottom was gray. It was awful.
Matt, the only 2-colored jersey being worn was the long-sleeved undershirt by Scott Rolen (and if anyone else was wearing it but Rolen was all I saw in the pictures). All the teams in mlb have these 2-colored jerseys, and they’re honestly not that bad.
And Pujols and his Jordan shirt were probably worse – since it was blue, and not red, like the jersey he wore underneath.
I kind of wish you would’ve cropped the field hockey pic to waist and below. That chick with the mouthguard almost made me choke on my bagel.
I agree, and I’m not even eating anything. But, if you crop from waste down, you lose the obvious “Van Ass” joke. And how about the Adidas logo INSIDE THE FUCKING UNI NUMBERS. And a third thing: I understand that the three stripe design is Adidas’ trademark design, but does it really need to outline the direction of a player’s bodily waste? Imagine the three stripes down the ass crack in professional sports. Probably most appropriate for the Yankees… or link.
I kind of wish you would’ve cropped the field hockey pic to waist and below. That chick with the mouthguard almost made me choke on my bagel.
We would have been able to see the unique placement of the three stripe…

BUT would have lost on the logo creep inside the jersey numbers!!!

Not nearly as bad as those half-shirts from a year or two ago. Anyone else remeber Jim Edmonds with his stomach hanging out, defending how he looks like a total woman? I looked briefly for a picture, but couldn’t find it. Someone should get on this, as I have to go to work.
Mike, Ya just beat me to it!
Sorry buddy. Speed kills (as we’ll hear every single god damn game when Reyes gets on base).

Sunday night football was a uni classic.
Steelers … vs the Chargers, with the Chargers in the classic powder blue with white helmets, with the uni number and the bolt on it.
Was looking for John Hadl passing to Lance Rentzel … with a smirking, bow-tied Sid gillman on the sidelines.
Too bad the Bolts dont stick with that bolt of blue.

Speaking of faux stirrups, I noticed Derek Lowe in the dugout in game three wearing his pants up with some fauxs on. Better than his usual pajama look.

Last night while watching the Padres, I couldn’t help but notice the color striping on their blue alternates. The stripe stops (or starts) at the edge of the collar on the left (hole) side, goes around the neck, then (here’s the weird part) goes all the way down the placket of jersey on the right (button) side. It hidden, but with so many guys wearing their top buttons undone, it was very clear in the dugout. link the best evidence I could find.

    Paul,

Why not strengthen your argument and throw the Knicks into the Ditch the Black campaign? They too have desecrated the link with adding link to their uniforms. Also, I think more focus needs to be placed on the colors of the teams matching the NYC flag. It would be like a Pittsburgh team dropping black and gold from their schemes for something hipper. The Penguins started off trying to do link, only to be hailed back to the realm of link team colors, even though they had a minor claim to blue. The Giants and Dodgers argument seems to be dismissed by the gaggle of young fans who base their link on recent memory rather than historical tips of the cap to teams lost. You can give them a heavy dose of pathos by saying they lack NYC loyalty!

Chargers/Steelers game. Gates had Riddell on the back of his helmet, but the rest of the team had the Chargers name. Love those baby blue though!

Sorry, it was Hadl to Lance Alworth (Bambi). Lance Rentzel was a Cowboy (I think).

There was some mention yesterday of Southwest airing commercials with fake player uniforms but the new ref unis. While that is odd in it of itself, what struck me to be even MORE bizzare is that Southwest already had a commercial that was (at least virtually) word-for-word the same with the old unis.

That means that they bothered to either a) refilm the same commercial with a different ref uniform or b) digitally change the old commercial for “authenticity”.

Either way would be pretty weird when the team uniforms are not authentic and the old version of the commercial has run for YEARS (my annoyance at SWA’s use of commercials for 4-5 years is another topic).

I was watching the Mizzou/Texas Tech game on saturday night and I do not know if this has been addressed in an earlier article or comment post, but why are the Tiger’s helmets and the Tiger’s pants. The helmets have the Guldens Mustard and the pants are more French’s Mustard.

Also, gnarly picture with the lady with the javelin? through here foot…quite hardcore.

Agreed – excellent uniform night last night. Regarding the decal on the back of Gates’ helmet – I suspect the “Chargers” decal fell off. The Chargers don’t appear to remove the “Riddell” imprint on the back bumper; they just cover it up with the decal.

It may be black – I just took a look at some more photos. Here is my question, though. Where did the shirt come from? Do the players just not take off their uniform tops during the celebration? I did not know they threw on other t-shirts to soak themselves in champagne, or beer as Albert was spraying.

well it works now, sorry about the bad linkage…im finishing up a paper i need to turn in at noon cst and im sorry about the quadruple posting.

Damn, f’d it up again…it should ask why are the gold’s different on the helmet and on the pants…sorry again all…doleyoleyokie…im an idiot…yes you are (super troopers)

another point of interest from last night’s Steelers/Bolts game…in addition to the large number on the Bolts helmets there were small uni numbers on the high hookups of the chinstrap themselves…no photos, but it was plain as day on the Chargers..perhaps to identify the helmets before the decals were added…since the back of the helmets were totally plain..no numbers, no “warning” decal, etc..

I don’t see a problem with link they are just an updated version of link. I don’t know the history of the two colored undershirt, but it has a long baseball history. And, they are UNDERShirts. When the jersey is on it’s under and all you see are the sleeves and the neck line. Now, when you do link there’s a problem.

It is my humble opinion that link (low whites) is the new link (pajama pants)

carolina did that well into the 70’s, bobby jones, mitch kupchak and i believe phil ford did as well.

if this is indeed a pic from 64, miller and lewis would not have played varsity as freshman werent eligible.

miller is also from my hometown of catasauqua, pa. an unbelievable high school player (2722 career hs points with no 3 pointer) and a legend to this day… his 3 year stats at carolina are unbelievable as well…2 time all acc and all american 6th all time in scoring with 1982 points…

    Kane

The Penguins have more than a minor claim to the color blue and they were never “hailed back” to the city colors of black and gold. The team began in 1967 with blue jerseys and wore that color, in various styles, (all of which are superior to any of the blask and gold) until 1980 when they first turned to the city colors. A complete jersey history can be seen here.

I’m on my laptop in class (not paying attention, of course) and there’s this dude wearing a blue mets cap with an orange “NY”. I chonestly can’t stop staring because it looks so damn good. I haven’t seen a blue mets cap in so long

I’d noticed that a few weeks ago and Paul said he was going to put together a blog on chinstraps. In addition did anyone else notice that Tomlinson didn’t have anything written on the front of his helmet where “Riddel” usually is? It was blank.

Thanks for the great link to the history of Pittsburgh uniforms. My comment on a minor claim to blue is a reference to the blue and white checks on the Pittsburgh flag, which is a relatively small inclusion compared to the large usage of black and gold. I am aware of the standing tradition of the Penguins jerseys. The comment was made in the larger context of my comment on sports teams borrowing from their city’s flag. “Hailing” is a reference to the jerseys proving to be unpopular, which is what prompted the change, and the shift towards the black and gold. Call it “interpellation” if it explains the process of change in a manner that offends you less.

About the tagging barb… I find this moderately odd. Every 5950 I have ever seen has never had one of these. Usually they have a size sticker, MLB Authentic hologram, and usually a price sticker for whatever store they are being sold at. This leads me to believe that New Era ships the caps with only stickers (no tags) and the only way that a tagging barb could get on to a hat would be if it was put there by the retailer. Pretty odd for player stock, no?

I saw highlights from the Cal Oregon game and for once the Ducks weren’t the ugliest team on the field – they were still ugly though.

It doesn’t say Riddel, because he wears a Schutt. They don’t have a deal to put their name or logo on the field, so it goes blank. Some teams put a link on the nose bumper.

The more bizarre part of this is that the Tiger logo on the jersey more closely matches the gold in the helmet than the yellow on the jersey trim and pants.

    Notes:
Surprised not much chatter on Cal jersey’s vs. Oregon. Did Nike ask the Ducks Equipment Mgr. to bring in the jersey’s for Cal?

The Cardinals grey w/ red trim undershirts have been worn all season. Pretty standard and not offensive. What players choose to put on AFTER a game, especially when getting ready to spray some champagne, matters little.

I agree, the original Penguins jerseys are a top five in hockey history, especially with the lace up neck. I’ve been searching for a reasonably priced one for years. However, Mitchell and Ness attend to attract a certain link, to which I am not a member. Hell, it may have inspired link.

PLEASE…this topic definitely deserves to be explored/discussed further…ESPECIALLY when one considers the nonstop talk regarding black and the stinking Mets…come on..THAT is the topic that has been beaten up like all New York fans should be…Oregon’s TOTAL lack of yellow this far in the season is making them not nearly the uni disaster everyone says they are…Cal’s use of yellow in my estimation is the reason for their victory!! it was their Homecoming game vs. Oregon and that’s the reason for the yellow jersey…now U of O needs to dig into the laundry bin and sport the yellow on yellow next game!!! victory will be assured!!

Made me think about other names and link that I found. Talk about the ultimate logo creep. Some people should be allowed to procreate (read: people who would name their child after a shoe or broadcasting company).

The link post on the official Chicago Cubs site today contained this Q&A:

“I was wondering if the Cubs were going to put the last names on the back of home jerseys next year.

Yes, the names will be back. It’s a marketing department decision.”

Bastards, but atleast the team reporter was honest. I guess this means no more Nomar to Cedeno jerseys or Walker to Theriot jerseys etc.

    Regardless…Go Cubs!

I think I should not have complained about Saline’s link last week. My own team wrought revenge on me: they surprised me (and everyone else) by wearing new white pants with the white away jersey, which resulted in a link. Talk about link!

Also in link, note his gloves. The palms are entirely yellow. They’re very eye-catching, to say the least.

Finally, while Dexter’s jerseys have improved (a previous version had a giant D on top of each shoulder), I’m not sure about the link.

Oh, and yes, Andrew, that late onside kick was a little bizarre, and we here in Chelsea certainly appreciate it. But I’d hold off on firing the coach for a little bit — he’s certainly brought life back to a program that was totally dead just a few years ago.

Heres something funny from John Buccigross’s ESPN article which contained a quick comment about the sabres unis

The Buffalo Sabres’ new logo is Barney Rubble’s hair. Actually, it’s Barney Rubble with slight bed head. The Sabres’ road whites look like Flintstone Adult Pajamas that you would buy at Wal-Mart. Maybe these things will get better with repetition, like Guster’s latest CD, “Ganging Up On The Sun,” but I’m thinking the uniforms might be more like an MC Hammer CD and get worse.

Also, Ive heard you guys from time to time make reference to the NHL switching to a new slimmer fitting uniform. Can someone better explain how it looks? Anyone have a prototype picture?
tonight is a matchup of what might be the worst uni’s in the nfl…
at least its supposed to snow in denver.
You must be mistaken. Minnesota played yesterday, and Seattle had a bye this week.

Tonight will be painful to watch, but only because of the Broncos and their awful bright orange. Maybe they’ll have pity on us and wear the white jerseys.

I think the Ravens unis are quite tasteful. Sure, they use purple, but they have a pretty sleek logo, no ridiculous stripes (nice solid stripe on each side of the pants), and only the one little logo on the side of the pants. Pretty classy, despite the purple.

Yeah that is definately not a barb. 5950s dont have tagging barbs, however, since i have had the same problem on my hat i can tell you that it is more than likley some of the thicker, harder (almost, if not, plastic) thread that is used to connect the front masking (or whatever the harder part of the font of the hat is called) to the hat, or may very well be a part of the masking. but its not a barb.
Agreed. I’ve had to trim some of the plastic thread before on one of my caps. BTW, I think that plastic stuff is called buckram or something like that.

Jesse, thanks for the link, I’ve been monitoring them constantly on eBay. Too large though, I’m a wear it sort of guy. Sorry to do this to you bluenoser, but I’m actually more a fan of the diagonal over the emblem. Either would be a great inclusion to a growing collection of default sweaters.

In fact, now that we have a discussion going on hockey jerseys I could give a crap about the Knicks having black on their jerseys. How about ditch this link?

Sorry, that black has already been ditched. Thankfully. Ditching this link would work too. Goddamned third jersey, disrupting a whole childhood of Blackhawks memories.

That’s a tactical idiocy. Remember the snow bowl? Visibility for the Packers was nil, but you could see the Broncos. That’s why we won. It isn’t going to approach that low of visiblity tonight, but it is still nice to have that advantage. And making the opposition play in white=awesome.

I know i could be banished from the Uni Watch community for saying this, but among the monochrome looks, i really dont mind Denver’s maybe the blue helmet and socks overdue it, but its better than most other looks.

By the way forgot to mention this. I first reported that the Indiana football team uses lower case letters for the second letter of the players first name, well Indiana played my school (Illinois) and at the game it looked like on the white jerseys the second letter was uppercase like the rest of the nameplate, ill try to find some visual evidence

I know most people don’t care, but I think link is one of the worst dressed players in MLB. Not only does he wear his pants like pajamas, but he wears them extra baggy as well as his jersey (as can be seen in the link). On the field he also wears his cap a little crooked and off-center. I don’t know if it’s because of the way he wears his hair of if his head is shaped funny, but it always annoys me when I see it. OK, got that off my chest. I feel much, much better now. ;-)

I agree, its not the worst thing in the world. And yes, I know it was their original sweater link. However, with the precedence of greatness set by their link and link sweaters, it just seems to be a cheap way of making a link.

It is the equivalent of the Bruins coming up with some cheap yellow third jersey to make a quick dollar. link. Better example, if the Canadiens came up with blue third jersey. No, instead they went throwback. Why can’t the link? But then again, I suppose making a quick dollar is what the third jersey program is all about. It could be link!

Despite the Flames third jerseys being placed in the link, we still have to deal with the tyranny of the black link. Where the hell did that black come from? It wasn’t a holdover from Calgary’s previous link. It sure wasn’t there for their link.

well to be pefectly honest..the Broncos are probably close to 99% black in the rain or the sun!!

UNC wore socks with uni numbers on them into the early 1970’s. Bobby Jones wore them along with the Carolina Blue Chuck Taylor shoes that the Tarheels wore in that era. The v-neck jerseys from that period are still a classic.

    a. that was my weak attempt at a joke regarding the Broncos and how they look black!!

    b. the difference between the two T.O. facemasks lies in the crossbar(s) at the top of the facemask..the “double” bar provides some additional protection to the eyes/face and the single bar (second half of the game) is more of a QB facemask affording better vision across the upper part of your fied of view

vyacheslav, I had the same problem until I re-read Paul’s description. Look at the facemasks above the eyes (around the forehead) to see the difference. There. Hopefully, this will be the last T.O.-related item in Uni-Watchland.

Big Ed, you were all over T.O.’s face-mask. Wait, that didn’t come out right.

Also, I protest the notion that the Vikes have the worst unis in the NFL, though I agree that the Seahawks do. The Vikes’ unis grow on you–really, they do!

Word on the street is that those jerseys are supposed to be “slim fitting” and “tighter” than the current models. Honestly, I don’t see much of a difference.

So for the ALCS, I guess they just alter the logo on the field from ALDS to ALCS? Is it otherwise the same typeface?

    A’s in 4, baby.

The Broncos don’t wear the orange alternate uniforms anymore because every time they wore them at home for either Sunday Night or Monday Night Football they lost. Maybe they’ll try them again sometime, but I doubt it.

I like the Seahawks’ uniforms! They are distinct and instantly identifiable with just one team, for a few reasons:

    1. They basically invented a new color. Not only have I never seen a football uniform that was that shade before, I don’t think I’ve seen anything that was that shade before. (And I like the color.)

    2. They are committed to the monochrome look. It’s annoying when teams keep mixing and matching their uniforms the way Oregon or many of the teams in the NFL do. But the Seahawks have never done that (except when hot weather makes it better to wear the white pants). I think they are the only NFL team that has made monochrome uniforms their normal look. And because of that, they have a unique identity. If they used the white pants, they’d look too much like the Eagles.

    3. Their uniforms are not cluttered messes like the ones the Bengals and Bills wear. (The Bills are a double offender because their new colors are a ripoff of the Texans.) Simpler is better.

I’ll be surprised if anyone agrees with me, but that’s my honest opinion!
