What’s Printed on a Fancy-Shmancy Four-Color Press and Read All Over?

Newsboy graphic.jpg

New ESPN column today (a day earlier than usual, to coincide with the start of the NHL season) — here’s the link.

Meanwhile: I have only two phobias. One of them involves mushrooms, but we’ll save that for another time. The other one is a morbid fear of being stuck on a train with nothing to read. And yesterday, for reasons not worth getting into here, I was riding the New York City subways a lot. So, faced with lots of train time and deathly afraid of ending up without enough printed matter, I did something I rarely do: I bought copies of all four New York newspapers, instead of my usual one or two.

And if yesterday is any indication, I may have to start doing this more often, because all four papers had noteworthy uni-related content. Here’s the rundown:

New York Post: The sports section featured this photo of Alex Rodriguez, taken during Monday’s workout at Yankee Stadium. An intriguing shot, this — was A-Rod, a lifelong pajama-clad player, planning to break his playoff jinx by hiking up the cuffs and showing some sock? Alas, as we all saw last night, that turned out not to be the case.

Daily News: Weirdest uni-related item of the day. The front and back pages were occupied by a huge wraparound illustration filled with caricatures of prominent Mets and Yankees. The illustrator chose to dress the Mets in their black caps with blue brims — regrettable but unsurprising. Here’s the kicker: The Yankees were depicted with blue brims as well (here’s a close-up of the two skippers) — what the fuck? Perhaps the illustrator is a long-suffering Mets fan who wants Yankee partisans to know how it feels when a team’s classic design is sullied by unnecessary contrast-colored brims. Or maybe the illustrator (and the art director, and the editor…) just has his head up his ass. Either way, I practically jumped out of my subway seat when I saw this one.

newsboy.gif

New York Times: Not sports-related, but the Business section had a really good story about the new uniforms at Wal-Mart. Highly recommended.

Newsday: Some guy named John Valenti, who apparently spends most of his time writing about bank robberies and Long Island politics, came up with a brilliant idea yesterday: “I know,” he said to himself, no doubt feeling all clever and innovative, “I’ll write an article about sports uniforms.” This is such a revolutionary concept, I can’t believe I didn’t think of it myself. Seven years ago. Uni Watch Long Island bureau chief Alleen Barber, who’s an editor at Newsday, assures me that Valenti’s “a good guy.” So in the immortal words of H.I. McDunnough, maybe it’s just that his advisors are confused.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Justin Morneau’s a big hockey fan, as evidenced by the NHL logo that’s occasionally visible on his undershirt. The logo was much more plainly apparent on Sunday, during the Twins’ division title celebration. (Good catch by Matthew Strauss.) … Ryan Armbrust has noticed something odd: Many Nike-outfitted college football teams wear pants with no fly. Check it out: Missouri, Ohio State, Penn State, Nike catalog. Standard lace-up fly at
Iowa, though. Miami, too. “I mean seriously, how far away are we from solid neck to ankle unis?” says Armbrust. “I give it like four more years. Oregon is going to be playing a late- season game somewhere cold and they’re going to walk out looking like a bobsled team. This really bothers me, although I am not sure if it’s from the pants or from looking at numerous photos of men’s crotches all morning.” … Jim Leyland’s kid wears bogus stirrups (good catch by Shawn Knowles). … Sharp-eyed Tom Kot writes in with the following nameplate item: “I just caught the replay of Saturday’s Indiana/Wisconsin game, and at the beginning you can see the backs of freshmen Adrian Burks and Aaron Burks. Their nameplates are ‘Ad. BURKS’ and ‘Aa. BURKS’ — all uppercase accept for the second letters of their first names. Couldn’t find any pictures but I’ve never seen lowercase lettering on a nameplate except in a case like McDonald [lots of similar examples here], and I’ve never seen ‘Aa.’ on a nameplate either.” … Several sources are reporting that Florida State’s special Seminole tribe tribute unis, due to be worn on October 21st, will look like this this, but then those same sources say the uni will be solid-black, even though the photo looks more like solid-green (full details here and here). … I’ve noted before that Tigers “closer” Todd Jones wears one jersey sleeve shorter than the other. But Steven Malcolm notes that Jones also had some serious XYZ issues earlier in his career. … A trademark attorney named Anthony Verna interviewed me last week because he wanted to discuss sports branding on his blog. The resulting post on his site is available here.

It wasn’t just an NHL logo that Morneau has on his shirt… it’s link. I was whining about it in last week’s comments.

Justin Morneau got alot of good natured ribbing online for wearing a Vancouver Canucks shirt during the Division Championship celebration. The Canucks are the hated rival of the local NHL team, the Wild.

Unrelated, but last Friday my local high school football team played a school with link. All blue — no stripes or piping or anything. Before the game, a friend of mine glanced at the unis and immediately declared them “cheap-looking” because of the completeness of the monochromatic scheme.

It’s not just with the Canucks logo on front, but with Todd Bertuzzi’s Name and number on the back.
(Is Bertuzzi also 33? Is that where Morneau gets his number?)

The quote that immediately came to mind was from Anchorman: Legend of Ron Burgundy:

Ron Burgundy: You are a smelly pirate hooker.
Veronica Corningstone: You look like a blueberry.

Nice link logo on the helmets and pants though.

Morneau actually switched to link because of link.

I’d say that Quarterback has more serious issues than a bad looking uniform. Does Burrill employ an offensive line?

Morneau wearing the Van t-shirt is HILARIOUS, the fact it’s Bertuzzi(number 44) btw is kinda sad. I’m thinking it must be a lucky shirt since Bertuzzi’s been traded to another team so maybe Morneau just found himself a lucky shirt and doesn’t want to change it.

    link
Thanks for the story on Miller’s mask, it is pretty sweet looking. One of my favorite things about the new NHL season is seeing all the new goalie masks on guys that have switched teams, or in this case, the team changes the unis.

I never understood the venom for the Mets’ use of black – I don’t think it’s that bad. But then again, I’m so against the uni-enthusiast grain that I have a closet full of classic D-Rays unis.

yeah, i gotta think that’s Morneau’s lucky shirt; pretty sure he was sporting it at the wild-card clinching celebration a few days earlier, too.

Actually, Morneau wears 33 because of Larry Walker, who is also from BC.

To note, as well about the lower case letters, Greg de Vries, when he played for the Edmonton Oilers, had “de” completely in lower case letters. I’ll try to find a pic to illustrate

Cook’s champagne – very classy, Minnesota. What is that, $5 a bottle? I guess if they’re just going to douse each other in it, it doesn’t matter. I wonder if the Yankees use Dom Perignon.

Jim Leyland looks pretty old (or maybe it’s the Marlboro Reds) to have a young son. But then I remembered the ’97 Series and Fox showing his very HOT, very YOUNG wife in the stands. I really thought it was his daughter at first. Way to go Jimmy! But at least outfit your son in some real stirrups.

I’ve seen college football players wearing link with their school’s logo printed on them with white ink.

If the purpose of eye black is to keep glare out of the player’s eyes, they’re defeating the purpose by putting the white logo on them. Actually, according to this link entry, the stickers are ineffective even if they don’t have the logo.
So…since they don’t reduce glare, are they wearing them for a war-paint effect?
This drives me nuts. I wore eye black, but only when we played out doors and when it was sunny. I never wore it indoors or when it was overcast/a night game

Some people may disagree, but I like brown in a uniform, especially since it’s not over-used. And speaking of Valpo, what years were you there, Kenny?
2001-2005

To Paul’s point about never having seen lowercase letters on a nameplate: I recall that when Reggie and Ron Jackson both played for the then-California Angels I think Reggie’s nameplate read “Re. Jackson” and Ron’s read “Ro. Jackson” with the lowercase letters.

Naturally, I can’t find visual proof, but can someone back me up??

Carl Pohlad isn’t exactly the most free spending owner on earth – as evidenced link.

    Everything tastes better in styrofoam.

I can’t find a pic, but did anyone else notice the shot of Belliard after he was replaced in a double switch? He was watching from the dugout, and not wearing a hat or helmet. This left his urban turban in full view, which was adorned with the StL logo.

Is the MLB providing rags for the boys now? Seems a little non-traditional to be standard-issue team apparel, but what do I know…

The note at the end of the ESPN article today make me realize that the last time I wrote about Uni Watch, I called it UniWatch a couple of times.

    Sigh…

I hope I haven’t angered the Uni Watch gods too much (esspecially since I still like it better as UniWatch anyway).

I’ve that read a number of different people claim that the all-black FSU uniform “looks green.” I think this is a monitor issue as they look black as night to me. Not sure if that means my monitor is good or bad…

I posted this at the end of the comments section yesterday but I don’t know how many people look at the the last comments:

Does anybody know what brand/symbol is on Hideki Matsui’s arm band? John mentioned that he is under contract with Mizuno but it doesn’t look like either of there logos.

Fortunately, it was my team sacking the qb in that picture; unfortunately, my team lost not just the game, but the starting qb, too (knee injury).

Oh well. At least the unis looks better.

I know Mizuno made a unique logo for Matsui’s stuff. That might be it, it’s hard to tell in those pics.

    Good column on ESPN today.

Major botch in link: “He drew inspiration from the design and colours of the then-minimalist uniforms of both the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys.” Good trick to be inspired by link!

I seem to recall Ron Jackson having his entire name on the jersey at one point. I think his first name had the “ON” part in small capitals, though.

If anyone’s got his 1983 Topps baseball card floating around, have a look. I think that’s where I saw this.

Maybe because I was so used to it, but I wish the NHL would go back to white at home.
I know, dark jerseys used to be worn at home originally, but that was what, the 40’s?

The reason he wears the Canucks shirt is that it’s nearly the same color of navy as the Twins’ undershirts. As for his choice of team, he is a BC kid, growing up in the Vancouver suburb of New Westminster. Larry Walker, also from BC, was/is his baseball idol of choice, hence his #33 (as another astute Uni Watch reader pointed out).

Personally, I wear a red Troy Glaus jersey T-shirt from his time with the Angels as my undershirt when I play baseball. I get the normal ribbing from guys on my team because I’m a third baseman, but our jerseys are red, and it matches perfectly. I am an Angels fan, much the same way that I’d suspect Morneau is a Canucks fan.

But I’ll say it again… isn’t the jersey he wears over top of the Canucks shirt a little more important than what he wears under it? :o)

This is a marketing ploy used by the NHL to get more teams playing at home in their alternate jerseys in order to increase jersey sales and exposure. The NHL won’t admit this, but that’s what we were told by a CCM rep when they switched to dark at home. I’ll take CCM’s word over the NHL’s politics any day of the week.

If you went to any games before they switched, the majority of people in the hometown crowd wore the white home jerseys. Now? If you travel to Edmonton, there are more dark jerseys in the crowd than there are white. I suspect other NHL cities have the same trend.

Morneau can wear whatever he damn well pleases as long as he keeps producing. He could go naked for all I care—though that might be a bit impractical. He’s Canadian. Enough said.

In the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, teams wear white at home until New Year’s, then darks at home until playoffs, then back to whites. A lot of people buy both jerseys (with the darks featured prominently as Christmas gifts), and get to see both the light/dark jerseys of the visiting teams, depending on the time of year

Changing the subject, if I may…

Does anybody recall an NFL preseason game between the Browns and Patriots — I believe it was in the late 70s at New England — in which Cleveland wore white honeycomb mesh jerseys on a hot afternoon? I don’t remember ever seeing an NFL club wearing such college-style jerseys before or since, aside from Tampa Bay.

I’ve been hearing Morneau wears 33 because of Larry Walker for a while now, and as far as I know, he has said nothing to indicate he wears it because of Walker – it was based on the fact he got a tattoo when he was a hockey goalie that has “33” on a maple leaf (scroll down link), and in link article, he says that he wears 33 because of Patrick Roy.

Can somebody point me toward a quote or anything that states he switched numbers because of Larry Walker?

This is actually one trend in hockey that I like. The “Q”, along with the other CHL leagues, has adopted that policy from what I understand.

With junior hockey, every cent counts when building a team. Selling jerseys and putting people in the crowd is the difference between folding and staying alive in some cases.

With an NHL team, this is a money grab. Gone are the days where the Winnipeg Jets played in front of the “White Out”. The entire arena in the playoffs would be white. It’s these traditions that made hockey fun, especially in the playoffs.

And besides that, we all know that good guys wear white, right? :o)

I had actually heard that on a telecast of a Twins’ game. However, after a little research, it appears that the switch to #33 was because of the tattoo on his biceps that he got when he was playing hockey.

J.C. Romero wore #33 for Morneau’s first two seasons. Morneau wore #27. He asked for the number when Romero left due to him wearing it throughout his hockey career.

Good call, Natron. It appears whoever was calling the game (I didn’t catch the name of the announcer) might have jumped the gun.

I’m actually 6 hours north of Minneapolis, in Winnipeg. As for good places to crash here, there aren’t many that I’ve found that I would crash at regularly. Of all the restaurants we have here, there are no good sports bars anywhere in this city that aren’t a major franchise.

I guess that’s what happens when you don’t have a major league sports franchise.
You can speak French? C’est magnifique! Are you a Mountie as well? That would be most excellent. Winnipeg, huh? I think you best come down here to the Twin Cities. We have plenty of places to go, and we have Canadians as well.

Ok, Paul, I’m calling for a Uni Watch Party in the Twin Cities. What do you say? If the Twins and the Mets meet up, it’s on!

After reading the ESPN article toady, I couldn’t agree more that the Bruins Bear-head logo was rather shabbily treated. It remids me of other classic, realistically rendered animal logos like link, link or link which are all better than cartoon-y renderings of animal logos like link or link or link.

I’m not sure if roller hockey counts. I left my UniWatch Stylebook in my other handwarmer thingie; can we get a ruling?

    Coupla things:

    1) link.

    2) I’m a big Minneapolis fan and would love to have a Uni Watch party there. Actually, I’d like to do an entire Uni Watch tour. Just a matter of finding the time to do it. Busy, busy, busy, etc….

    3) In a welcome development that’s nicely in keeping with the newspaper theme in the blog today, the New York Times is planning to write a small article about the link campaign, and they want me to attend today’s Mets/Dodgers game with the reporter who’s writing the story, so I’m heading off to Shea shortly. And since I don’t have (a) a torn calf muscle or (b) “family matters” to attend to in California, I’m also available to pitch.

Found a good shot of an Orlando Solar Bears jersey with lower-case letters. This immediately came to mind when I saw the request.

Have to disagree on disliking the link. This is the first time I’ve seen that many fonts work together so well.

    1) NHL dark home jerseys are old-time hockey, e.g.the Rangers (Broadway Blueshirts) ..
    2) Get today’s Sports Illustrated with the magazine’s all-time MLB team. Great painting of the winners, all in vintage unis.
And yes, A-Rod. In his Seattle Mariners garb.
The Babe, who never wore the interlocking NY on his chest as a player.
Two Dodgers, Jack Roosevelt Robinson (Brooklyn) and Sanford Koufax (LA)
And great-really old-school unis on Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Cy Young.

If and by what I have read it seems every GM and fan hates the new slim fit hockey uniforms why is the NHL pushing it on us all? This is just another example of Bettman killing the league. All of this marketing is pushing me to hate the game.

No offense, but I’m a Dodger fan. (I love the classic Dodger uniforms and agree with Mr. Scully that the red number is the icing that makes them.) Even so, I’m 100% supportive of your campaign against the Mets’ black. Good luck.

It’s not Bettman this time. CCM and the NHL had an exclusive contract for CCM to produce all the jerseys for all NHL teams. CCM was bought by Reebok. Reebok thought it could “improve” on the jersey design by pulling a “Nike template scheme”. The NHL GMs resisted Reebok’s first attempt at changing the look of the game. However, they did give up ground by allowing Reebok to “test” it with practice jerseys. Now that the door has been opened, Reebok is trying to blow the hinges off by changing the tradtional style of jersey.

I will never buy anything Reebok ever again because of their wanting to be like Nike: all things wearing an NHL jersey will be Reebok-isized.

Regarding logos vs wordmarks on hockey unis. UW hockey with link, and link. I’ll take the former, thank you very much. The latter unis (known mockingly as jammies), in addition to being hideous, also seemed to be total bad-luck charms. Thank goodness they’ve been abolished. The primary jerseys aren’t without flaws though. Notice the red outline that goes all the way around the letters, enclosing the white space within ‘W’ ‘S’ and ‘N.’ Ick.

As for the Winston-Salem bears…aren’t the fonts on the sweaters the same as the ones in the cig wordmarks? Hmmmm. That’s some clever marketing there.

Last, have photos of any of the Reebok hockey prototypes been leaked? I’d like to see just how bad they are.

I have yet to see a leaked picture of any of the new Reebok designs. The practice jerseys are available on the Reebok hockey website. Since I hate “Nike-bok” for their NHL jersey travesty, I’m not linking their site.

Mark Kotsay’s jersey just came untucked from the rear on his inside-the-park-homerun trot. It, literally, just happened about a minute ago, so no pictures yet.

Regarding the NY Times article about Wal-Mart uniforms, I noticed a few things:

Some workers are not eager to dig into their own pockets to pay for the khaki pants. Aubretia Edick, who works at a Wal-Mart in Hudson, N.Y., said in an interview that the dress code was “very crisp” but questioned why she should have to buy her own pants if she does not normally wear khakis. “I am buying these pants for work, and that is it,” Ms. Edick said.

Is this really a complaint? I’m sure I’m not the only one who wears certain clothes to work that I normally wouldn’t if I were given the choice (ties, creased pants, leather-soled shoes). Of course I don’t regard Wal-Mart as a fashion standard. Case in point, the last lines of the article:

Mr. Simley of Wal-Mart said the company wanted workers “to feel comfortable and confident in what they are wearing.”
“If they want to tuck it in they can,” he said. “If not, they can leave it out.”

Hey, I’m just another 45 minutes away, at Grosse Pointe South. When our football team stopped the all-navy look and switched to white pants, I nearly yelled at how happy I was. The team still sucks though.

There is some great high pants/stirrup action here in the clip from the ’84 World Series. When done in uniform, it’s such a great look. Why did everyone stop doing it?

I hope you’re on late enough to read this, Paul. And I hope you had a great time at the game.
The Leafs honoured 4 for Red Kelly and Hap Day and 21 for Borje Salming. They did not retire the numbers as evidenced by the fact that Johnny Pohl was wearing 21. The yhave only ever retired two numbers, 5, for Bill Barilko, and 6, for Ace Bailey.

Actually, the way I remember it, Reggie wore the standard “JACKSON” without any first initial, and Ron Jackson wore “RON JACKSON” in condensed letters. I don’t remember any lower case letters. On a side note, both Jacksons’ jerseys had beautiful vertically arched lettering, if I recall correctly. Sorry, I have no visual proof, either.

took a long lunch. whites with black sleeves and the black and blue caps. no socks visible that i could see. dodgers look good too in their road greys (trying to avoid using the word “classy” there). didn’t like the A’s and Twins both sporting the colored tops, green and navy.
You can’t argue with either team’s strategy. Obviously Oakland stayed with the green tops because they won in them yesterday, and Minnesota switched jerseys because they lost in the white yesterday. It’s all in the psychology.
I heard the A’s have been wearing their green alternates on the road this season quite frequently because they say “Athletics,” as opposed to the road grays, which say “Oakland.” There’s talk of a potential move for the A’s to the south bay (San Jose, Fremont area), so they might be trying to remove all “Oakland” references from their jerseys.

    Just a theory…

Happy trails to my favorite NHL jersey of all time: the Boston Bruins “pooh bear” alternate. That bear logo is just way too cool, and the combination of eye-popping yellow with black on white trim is exquisite. This is the major absence from my jersey collection, and now that it’s gone, I fear I may miss it. But it had a wonderful run, and if eBay is good to me somewhere down the road, maybe I will own one. Preferable with the number 8 of Cam Neely, even though he never wore the shirt himself. Adios, my golden friend!
Just read the column, and I have to say that I liked the previous Buffalo unis. I like red and black, and I like the white buffalo. While I do like the blue of the new unis, the Buffaslug is just not right.

Ok. Done posting for now. Gotta get ready to watch Morneau hit a homer in his Canucks undershirt…
Could not agree more! Their red alts were special, too.

Didn’t Adidas buy Reebok, can anyone update me on that? Will we see the triple stripes on NHL jerseys in the near future? I miss the old back hem two-tone CCM logos of the past.

    link

Any idea on how (un)common this is?
Hiromi Matsunaga of the Hanshin Tigers once wore number 02 when he joined the team and found another guy wearing his customary 2. This was around the same time that Benito Santiago was wearing number 09, so it garnered some attention. No one else in Japanese baseball has ever had a leading zero.

Also, I seem to recall the Dodgers issuing numbers 03 and 04 in spring training a few years ago. It’s only a matter of time before someone in MLB gets three digits!

Having played football for 35 years from primary to university, in international adult tournaments I cannot recall seeing a gk with 01. I give her props for creativity … I also like the small logo on her chest (it appears to be a mockup of the Canadiens’ logo, no?).
