Tag Play

feliciano.jpg

If you go to Old Navy, or to J. Crew, or virtually anyplace that sells T-shirts, you’ll find that shirt manufacturers are switching to screened-on tags, instead of sewn-on. Hanes has actually trademarked the term “Tagless,” and claims that this feature allows you to “ditch the itch.” Even Uni Watch T-shirts — which I’m sure all of you are planning to buy right now — have screened tags.

Unfortunately, this highly sophisticated concept hasn’t yet taken hold in Major League Baseball, where we keep seeing ballplayers with their undershirt tags sticking out. The latest exemplar of this phenomenon was Pedro Feliciano, who pitched the 7th inning of Friday night’s Mets/Nats game with his undershirt tag badly exposed. It must have irritated his neck, because at one point he tried to tuck it inunsuccessfully.

Every time this happens — and it’s happened at least three or four times in the past few months — I’m overcome by the urge to reach out and tuck in the tag. Paul LoDuca must feel the same way, because he did exactly that during a mound conference toward the end of Feliciano’s wayward-tagged inning of work. Now that’s how to handle a pitching staff! Unfortunately, the tag came untucked yet again a few pitches later.

I don’t know who Feliciano’s agent is, but he’d be well advised to get on the blower to Hanes right now, because this has “endorsement deal” written (or silkscreened) all over it. They could even get LoDuca on board and re-create their little mound meeting. Meanwhile, memo to Nike, or whoever’s making these undershirts: Get with the program already and lose the tags.

There was another uni incident of note during that Mets/Nats series, incidentally, as Cliff Floyd slid in the outfield yesterday and emerged with his jersey unbuttoned and untucked. Undaunted, he dutifully buttoned up, tucked in, and adjusted his belt, much to the amusement of everyone on hand.

Walkin’ Shoes Socks: MLB broadcasters continue to discuss the intersection of pant and sock, most recently on Friday night in Pittsburgh, where Pirates microphone men Greg Brown and Bob Walk had the following conversation when Chris Denorfia came to bat:

Walk: I like his socks. They are the Redlegs, aren’t they?

Brown: Yup. Wish they all wore uniforms like that. The way baseball unis were meant to be worn. [Camera shows a close-up of Denoria’s shins.] Could use a little higher stirrups, but at least show your stockings. How did you wear yours, Bob?

Walk: There’s nobody to point to, so I can’t tell you.

Brown: Oh really?

Walk: You look at everybody on the field, they’ve got their pants tucked into their shoes. [Camera shows not-so-great view of a Nelson Briles baseball card.]

Brown: There’s Nellie Briles.

Walk: Um, maybe not quite that high. A little lower than Nellie. Little bit lower. Between the knee and the ankle. I’d say I was just a little bit past the halfway mark.

Brown: About where it should be. You’re a professional. [Camera now shows an even worse view of a Jay Bell card.]

Walk: There you go. See where Jay’s are?

Brown: Yeah.

Walk: That’s about where I had mine. [A bit of photo research suggests that this assertion is basically accurate.]

Brown: You’re old-school.

Walk: I don’t know about that — I mean, old-school, that’s like Denorfia. That’s old-school. I’m middle school.

Actually, he’s more like nursery school, but that’s what it’s come to these days: The state of lower-leg affairs is so dire that even a pathetic stirrup style like Bell’s or Walk’s is deemed noteworthy. Something to work on for next season. (Big thanks to Mike Rose for tipping me wise on this one.)

Uni Watch News Ticker: Last Thursday evening I attended the launch party for longtime Uni Watch supporter Kevin Walsh‘s excellent new book, Forgotten New York: Views of a Lost Metropolis (which is also the name of Kevin’s superb web site). It has nothing to do with uniforms but everything to do with appreciation of obscure visual details, obsessive pursuit of the ephemeral, and historical documentation. Absolutely essential for all past and present residents of New York, and strongly recommended for everyone else. … Amusingly clueless blog entry here from Syracuse Post-Standard reporter Dave Rahme, who opines that “anyone who writes about uniforms … doesn’t know much about football and perhaps should be working in the garment industry” (with thanks to Mike Alper). … Nice catch by footwear guru Mark Mihalik, who writes: “We’ve seen Jason Giambi do the mid-game shave earlier in the year, but on Thursday night I saw him wearing one pair of cleats in his first at-bat (in which he struck out) and a different pair during the remainder of the game. The first pair was an all-black pair of Reebok Pumps (yes, Pumps are back and in baseball now, see here), and then he switched to a mid Reebok Vero cleat with a black/gray/white colorway (somewhat similar to these, but with a white logo instead of gray).” … Here’s a better view of the 1928 uniform ad I recently acquired. And here’s the 1959 Wilson baseball uni ad I scored a coupla days before that. Hot stuff, no? … Speaking of hot stuff, Derek Lowe’s pants literally caught on fire last Wednesday night. … Craig Ward has brought an interesting phenomenon to my attention: Wylie High School in Wylie, Texas, whose football jerseys have “AHMO” printed on the collar (and maybe on the chinstrap and/or front nose bumper too — tough to say for sure). “AHMO” is the school’s rallying cry — it appears on the school’s web site, is the basis for a book title, and is the subject of this blog post. But even after Ward tried to explain its meaning to me (supposedly a Southern-drawled approximation of “I’m gonna kick your ass,” but I just don’t see it), I’m still scratching my head. Anyone know anything about this one? … Several NBA teams will training in Europe during this month and are commemorating the experience by adorning their jerseys with country-specific colors. The Spurs, for example, will be in France, so they’ll wear red, white, and blue trim (the same colors as the French national flag). The Suns, who’ll be in Italy, will have red, green, and white trim, and the Clippers, who’ll be in Russia, have red, blue, and white. … Learned over the weekend that Uni Watch librarian Carrie Klein (sitting next to me here at last month’s Uni Watch Labor Day BBQ Party), who is now also the official Uni Watch publicist, has quite the storied uniform history of her own. That’s her, top row, second from the left, the first girl ever to play Pop Warner football in North Attleboro, Massachusetts (where she somehow scored Steve Grogan’s autograph!). Note the color-coordinated striped socks. Too bad the hosiery is cropped out from this Little League shot (don’t worry, the actual print is much more maroon, less purple), and you can’t really tell much from this hoops photo, but this still amounts to an impressive array of uniform-ity. … Florida’s Spurrier-era throwbacks looked pretty damn cool on Saturday. The obvious nitpicky gripe: the truncated shoulder stripes. Less obvious nitpicky gripe: the long chinstrap tabs that sometimes obscured the admirably simple helmet logo. … The first word that came to mind upon seeing Washington State’s surprise alternate unis on Saturday: unnecessary. What exactly was the point of this? The team looked fine, and this new design is neither outrageous nor innovative enough to matter. Yawn. Taken on its merits: I don’t mind the contrast-colored shoulder yoke (for the record, I don’t mind this same feature on the Tennessee Titans’ jerseys, either), but the uni numbers and wordmark are both way too big and clunky, and that little block of color on the lower pant leg (which wraps underneath) is embarrassing. … Tim Erney checks in with the following report from Saturday’s Cal/Oregon State game: “Cal radio announcer Joe Starkey was ripping on Oregon State’s unis all day. Then, late in the second half, he started talking about Cal’s game next week against Oregon and started going off on the Oregon uniforms — how they were a disgrace, ruined the spirit of spirit of college football, only purpose to sell more jerseys.” … Ya think maybe NFL jerseys have become too stretchy?

No one else is reading Uni Watch at 2 am? Where are your priorities?
I’ve noticed that some of those tag-less shirts can get a little sticky back there in the summer. The silk screen seems to react differently to the sweat than a real tag, and the extra stick can become more itchy than a tag. But the real essence of a uniform is to look good, so get rid of the tags.

I’m from Texas, so I’ll try to explain the AHMO thing. I guess the best way to get the idea of it is to say Ahmo kick yer ass. Kind of like I’m gonna kick your ass. Makes sense to me but I guess it’s a Texas thing ya’ll.

Paul, the AHMO thing requires a small lesson on the language of us Texans.

First, ‘I’ usually comes out as ‘Ah’, which explains the first half of the acronym. The ‘MO’ is is a contracted form of ‘am gonna’ which sounds like MO when spoken.
Thus, your sentence structure would be this – “Ahmo kick yer ass!”

    link

The lettering and numbering remind me too much of the link in that it would look good if it weren’t so big.

“tagless” shirts are the greatest invention since toilet paper. In those pictures of Feliciano are we sure that the tag isn’t from the actual mets jersey and not from his under garment? It appears the tag is off center, but couldn’t that just be caused by majestic’s chosen placement of the tag?

Just watching the highlights of yesterdays NFL action, and I just have to say I’m very glad I wasnt watching the Vikings-Bills game. link And was it really so cold in Buffalo that Johnson needed to wear a glove on his throwing hand?

So AHMO just means “I’m gonna,” and the rest is implied? Shit, I could’ve understood that easily enough, but nobody explained it to me that way….

Are players actually required to wear tagged undershirts? It seems to me that anything goes when it comes to undershirts, so there shouldn’t be any problem with tagless shirts.

A couple of notes from the weekend during the Chicago/Seatle game that the Bears running back ripped his jersey when he scored a touchdown and the showed the eqipment guy sewing him up on the sideline.

Also maybe this has been done for a while but I never noticed it before, Georgia football appears to wear a captains “C” on there jerseys, you can see it here on and here on also noticed it on number 87 but couldn’t find a picture, have they always done this?

It was a pretty nice day in Western NY yesterday.

wow really messed up those links, lets try that the old way

Webmaster, how do you put the links in with the “link button”? where do you put the text, I am totally computer retarded.
Webmaster, how do you put the links in with the “link button”? where do you put the text, I am totally computer retarded.
1) You hit the “Link” button.

    2) It prompts you to enter the URL, so you do that; meanwhile, the “Link” button has now become the “/Link” (i.e., “End Link”) button.

    3) The next text you type will be the linked (i.e., green and underlined) text. This can be anywhere from one character to an entire paragraph (although a word or two is the usual format).

    4) You hit the “/Link” button. This marks the end of your linked (i.e., green and underlined) text.

    OK?

if your tag is such a problem, just cut it off with a pair of scissors… maybe MLB doesn’t allow the players to cut off the tags…

You can’t blame the chinstrap overlapping the helmet logo on Florida’s uni design. Blame land firmly on the equipment guys: they weren’t detail-oriented enough to clip off the long ends of the straps. Or better yet, to rivet on the high-hookup straps.

I took my sone to see the movie Invicible this weekend, he’d been wanting to see it since it came out. Anyway during the last football game that ends the movie there was a serious uni breach. The film was about the Eagles in the early 70’s. They showed one player one the sidelines with a headband on…..with the current Eagles logo on it. Ooops.

Man the NBA is going overboard with the flag-based trim on some of those jerseys. The Clippers look good with the Russian red, white and blue because it’s their actual color scheme. But Phoenix with the Red and Green trim on Purple? Gag.

A flag patch would have been easier and looked better. Either that, or send Milwaukee to Italy (I know Milwaukee is a darker shade green).

What do think are the Mets chances at wearing blue all postseason long?

All adidas MLS jerseys are tagless, or should I say tag-free?

The NHL gets around the tag issue by sewing all four sides of the tag.

was reading Eric Moneypenny’s artical on fox sports today about college football. he was talking about how big it will be if OSU and scUM are 11-0 in november. he’s hoping that ABC/ESPN does the full circle thing and has “The Ted Ginn Face Shield Cam, only on ESPN360 2”.

    but it gets better:
By the way, Florida’s 1960s retro uniforms > Florida’s 2005 alternate unis with one orange sleeve.

Ooh, that reminds me … Anything > The “one orange sleeve” jerseys that certain Nike schools (Florida, Miami, Virginia Tech) wore at some point in 2005

    Regarding Undershirts,
In Playoff and Division-clinching celebrations, Justin Morneau revealed that his undershirt is a Canucks’ Todd Bertuzzi undershirt. (It’s kindof like the baseball jersey/T-shirts with the markings of Bertuzzi’s sweater: Name and number on the back, Orca “C” on front.)

On the throwback Florida jerseys, I didn’t write down the exact details, but the CBS announcers made mention of the fact that the helmets were ’67 style, but the jerseys (with no names) were of the ’66 variety.

CBS might be full of BS, but if its true, its an interesting continuity error.

if having an official tag is so important to mlb and majestic, why dont they relocate it from the traditional back of the neck, to along the button line. take a lesson from dress shirts, all the tags for garment care are located on a huge tag usually on the left, button hole side.

I was watching that SC/Wazzu game the other day, and the sideline reporter made a big deal pre-game about how the Cougs’ new alts were made of some newfangled fabric that supposedly wicks sweat away more efficiently and is harder for opposing players to grab onto. that shirt is a Nike Pro workout shirt, i know because i bought one and it is almost impossible to keep the tag inside the shirt when you put it on. I don’t know, I have several of the Hanes tagless undershirts and I don’t think the tag info is screened on, I think it’s ironed on. After 4-5 washes, it starts to peel off and feel just as itchy as a tag.

Thanks for clarifying the “AHMO” thing. I live in Texas and assumed it was similar to Texas A&M’s abbreviation “BTHO Texas” (or whoever) which means “Beat The Hell Outta Texas”.

And when did Steve Nash cut his hair?? I don’t remember that happening.

Yesterday, somebody mentioned that USC has done a good job of dealing with truncated shoulder stripes by tapering them. That’s actually an old jersey design that they have brought back.
See the pictures below of OJ and the later picture of Marcus Allen. You can see that they had tapered stripes over the shoulders even though they wore long sleeves and later switched to complete rings around the arm.

In response to the question about the Cowboys pants — they have two different shades of pants one to go with their white jerseys that have a bluish green tint, and one to go with their blue jerseys which are a cleaner silver color.

I personally have never liked the white jersey at home thing. They look like cheap jerseys bought right off the rack and the pants don’t match. And those blue jerseys look so sharp and crisp and match the helmet (even the stripe pattern).

The tag is definitely not from the jersey, as Majestic’s gamers don’t sport any sort of neck-tag. Generally speaking, the only tags present are the jock tag (with a size tag) on the lower left front of the jersey, and a smaller wash/ care tag on the inside- lower left. I know some teams in the past (possibly present) chose to put their jocktags elsewhere though.

This question seems overly simple, but when a team wears an alternate helmet like Florida did on Saturday, do they just cover the helmet with one giant removable decal, repaint before and after or what? An entire new set of helmets seems like quite a hassle and would wreak havoc on the superstitious player who wants his own helmet.

I like the new WAZZU uniforms. The more I saw them, the more I liked them. At first, I thought the lettering was too big and the notches on the pants were unnecessary. But as they game went on, I really felt like the design was well thought out in all aspects. WELL DONE!

I liked the fact that they are kind of a combination old school (solid colors) and new and different (bold letters and numbers). There is nothing “me, too” about the design. At every step, they could have toned this and that down, but I think it’s great they decided to just go for it (for example, staid lettering would have been much safer). Of course, if every high school begins to wear these, then they won’t look so fresh anymore.

As for the crimson helmets, I was surprised at first, because WSU normally wears their silver helmets at home. But once again, the crimson helmets grew on me and I really liked them after awhile. I think the problem with the silver helmets could be that do not match the gray in the new uniforms very well. For those that don’t know, the Cougs’ colors are crimson and gray. Some have urged WSU to have more gray and less silver. I guess we’ll see next week against OSU whether there are new roads uniforms, too, and whether the silver helmets go better with them.

Not sure about Florida, but when Georgia Tech wore their throwback uniforms on the 21st, the helmets were specially made for the game and are being link. The players were allowed to keep the jerseys.

You may have noticed in our game against Virginia Tech on Saturday, the players voted to continue wearing the link that were first worn in the Throwback Thursday game. If they keep playing like they have in the black shoes you can expect to see them for the rest of the season. Personally, I love it.

Watching the game on Saturday, the announcers said that the helmets were being given to people who contributed to the atheltic department. In fact, if someone wants to confirm feel free, the announcers said that the team practiced in them during the week; but wrapped the helmets in cellophane so the helmets wouldn’t be knicked up for the game. This fact would make me believe that these were one-time helmets.

On my other arm: link. Also important to me, also not worth explaining here.

Being a life long Cowboys fan I’ll try to explain the different colors. Originally they didn’t use silver but rather what I’ve always referred to a metallic silver-blue. Which I wish they’d use exclusively instead of silver. The silver helmet & pants were introduced when they went to the road unis were changed to navy in the early 80’s. Being a fan I wish the Cowboys would get a consistent color scheme, my suggestion: metallic silver-blue & navy. When I look at old pics or NFL Films stuff it seems the numbers on the white jerseys are navy so I don’t know when they started being royal. They used to have metallic silver-blue helmets for the white jersey & silver for the navy but this year they going with just silver which doesn’t look right with the metallic silver-blue pants & white jersey. They should either go with metallic silver-blue or silver helmets & pants for both jerseys.

I liked it a lot…can’t wait to see the rest whenever he gets it done

From a chat at the link:

Alexandria, Va.: Is it true the Wizards are getting alternate black uniforms this season?

Ivan Carter: Yes. Not sure how often they will wear them though. I also hear that they are going to wear some funky Bullets throwbacks, different from the ones they’ve sported in recent throwback games.
Oh man, those Suns jerseys are just hideous.
Those Suns jerseys might be the ugliest I’ve ever seen. They are so much worse than a couple football teams who have been getting a lot of mention on here as of late. The colors are nauseating and the jersey does not look like it belongs with those shorts.

Dan Steinberg mentioned the Wizzards uniforms last week in the Post’s link last week.

And Paul, France is Blue, White, and Red.

    i liked these uni’s…
    link

they used the non block font which at that time was rare…(hawks, warriors and maybe the blazers) may have been the only non block format at the time)

then they tinkered with the font and came up with this…
    link

as a traditional block lettering and numbering fan, its odd that i prefer the earlier one… im sure it has to do with the angled cross of the 2 and not the horizontal cross…
Per the media guide, the Cowboys team colors are:

Helmet/blue jersey: silver (PMS 8240), blue (PMS 289)
White jersey: royal blue (PMS 661), silver-green (PMS 8280)

All colors chosen by then-GM Tex Schramm

Ek, is there any way of saving our post, so if it doesn’t go through the first time, when we press back, it hasn’t gone away? I accidentally put in an incorrect security code, and so I lost all of this:

This weekend I noticed that the Rams have a Ram head logo on their slevees, with the Reebok logo above it. But, with all the altering and tightening done to the linemen’s uniforms, the Ram logo needs to be moved up and the Reebok logo slid to the point that it’s sitting on the Ram’s back.

    link and link.

I’d personally like to see these make a return as their throwback jersey: link

This is one of my three favorites, along with the Celtics classics and this Hawks look that gets points for its uniqueness:

    Pistol

Football jerseys should have sleeves. I understand one good reason (fabric getting grabbed) and one less good reason (show off the guns) why linemen have gone berserk in removing them, but wouldn’t it be possible to make the sleeves of a different fabric like that on compression shorts to address those issues and maintain a sleeve of sorts? Then things like sleeve stripes could be done properly.

Forecast for Wednesday at Shea: Mostly sunny, game time temperature of 79. No jackets required. I’ll be there in my blue hats; will the Mets be in theirs?

Yeah, and I suggest everyone that has problems with the security code do this on long posts: Highlight your post and press “control” and “c” at the same time (apple + c on macs). Then, if you lose your post, click on the blank box and hit “control and “v” (apple + v on macs) to paste your post in the box. It’s a good safeguard.

I know this can be a pain in the ass, but the security code is needed. I ran a blog without it once that was getting about 300-400 hits a day, and it was hit with spam comments four or five times a week. This site is averaging over 10,000 hits/day, so it would be a nightmare without it.

Better to have to copy and repost than to be propositioned by a site full of loose women…..wait….on second thought any chance of ditching the security code?

Joking aside thanks for the efforts Ek. You do a great job.

Wish there was a way to sort out my hits from everyone else’s… meaning, I’m sure I’m not the only one that hits this site several times per day just to read the new posts. Ah, in the long run, it doesn’t really matter. I love the site and all that you guys do to keep it up and running.

    Paul,
Figured you may appreciate link. Was on a trip for work for a couple of weeks and when i returned, my special lady had hand-dyed and knit link to watch the Buckeyes in on saturdays!!

    Anyone else “verboten”?

The ESPN cameras were panning the Eagles crowd and I saw a silver and green McNabb jersey. I nearly threw up.

did anyone else see the clearly accidental graphic on the MNF game? right after Philly’s second fumble, looked kinda like this:

    Philadelphia Eagles
    AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGG

only up for a half second.

    Pimps up, hose [pics] down.

Noticed yesterday that the helmet stripe on San Fran’s RB was seemingly ripped toward the end of the Niners v. Chiefs game. As a chiefs fan, I was proud b/c that meant somebody hit him hard enough to rip the decal(sp.?) Anyway, I don’t remember if it was Gore or if it was their back-up, but I believe it was Gore.

Again? This happened during the Steelers/Jags game too. It said “NFL GENERIC AAAAAAAAAGGGG”.

Also, notice that some of the Packers have the NFL Equipment logo on the white part of the jersey instead of the collar. I wonder if the NFL Uni Police got wise to players tying their jerseys and covering it up, so they mandated the second patch a la Wayne Gretzky.

It was especially awesome in the context of the game. The Eagles’ RB had just fumbled the ball for the second time. so it was like “AAAGGGHHH!!”

Ugh. That sounds even worse than the link I’ve been seeing in the stands at Arrowhead on occasion. This alternate-jersey madness needs to stop.

I bought socks on the internet for the first time and it is dog gone hard to find socks with NO LOGO on them. All I wanted were black soccer socks but there were all kinds of logo crap on them. Luckilly, God invented google and I found some nice quality cheapies with no logo. I hope you all are proud.

Ouch! Warn a gal before you go posting a pic like that. My eyeballs nearly fried from the sheer ugliness of that yellow.
what are those unis suppossed to be throing back to?
The 2005 Summer League?

that washington alternate shows me that they have just reduced themselves to a washington generals type team… the jobber who loses to the globetrotters, or a globetrotters-like team on a nightly basis.
